Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural and organic remedy that is used to aid many common ailments and now it is available in Universal City. Your CBD Store is open at 617 Pat Booker and offers products made with only the highest quality, organically grown hemp from Colorado certified by CO Department of Agriculture. There are many forms to choose from including water-soluble, edibles, tinctures, soft gels, vaping e-liquids, and topical applications. Your CBD Store even has tinctures and CBD treats for pets. CBD can help with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, migraines, diabetes, seizures or even problems such as insomnia. CBD oil eases pain and acts as an antiinflammatory for people battling arthritis. It can aid problems such as depression and anxiety by regulating the actions of serotonin in the body. The most common misconception that hinders the sales and acceptance of CBD is the confusion between CDB hemp and marijuana that contains tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC. THC is the chemical compound that results in a mind altering high when consumed. CBD helps to provide relief without the THC.

The H20 Elite At the recent Texas Water Utilities Association (TWUA) annual meeting in Corpus Christi, Universal City was once again awarded the Best Tasting Groundwater in the state of Texas by the Texas Water Utilities Association. This marks the seventh time the City has won this award. The City also received the award in 2009, 2010, 2014, thru 2017 and AGAIN in 2019! The judges scrutinized a number of water samples from around Texas for color, clarity, taste, and odor. When the judges assembled to provide their feed back to the attendees, they remarked that one water sample clearly stood out from the rest as the best drinking water. That one “stand out” water sample was submitted by the City of Universal City Water Department! If you happen to see Blake, Colin, Manuel, Joe, Jeff, T.J., Dewayne, Zach, or JoJo out fixing a water line, changing out a meter, or testing the water, please take a moment to congratulate them on their muchdeserved recognition.
A HEALTHIER CITY The Texas Community Challenge 2019 was the 3rd year the Mayor of Universal City, John Williams, has encoraged the City residents to partipate in the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge(ITT). ITT is an annual competition that awards Texas communities for demonstrating the greatest commitment to healthy living. The community with the most points in each size category received an $1,800 community grant to put toward future health-related efforts. The compeition ran from January 7th through March 3, 2019. Even though the City did not take the top prize, Universal City proudly placed 4th in in the small City division, logging more than 759,000 points, 157,326 minutes of activity, and losing a collective 194 lbs. During the three month challenge, participants completed various challenges such as healthy eating, exercising, drinking water, and checking your weight to collect points. To help motivate participants, the Mayor extended a local challenge to residents and City staff. Universal City resident, Chuck Consla, The greatest thing secured 1st place and about the It’s logged over 10% of the community points! “The greatest thing other residents kept me about the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge motivated.” is having the community participate in something — Chuch Consla together. The rivalry between other residents kept me motivated. Brian Hayden was competing for first place against us. So, we would work together to remind one another to log activity and healthy selfies each day. It would be great to see even more Universal City residents participating next year,” said Mr. Consla. Universal City Fire Chief Manual Casarez explained that the challenge helped him stay motivated to make healthy choices. “I knew that if I drank water instead of a soda, or ate a salad instead of a burger, that I could post those healthy selfies and help the community earn points,” he said. Chief Casarez lost 11lbs during the challenge and increased his water consumption. He plans to gift his FitBit to a family member to encourage them to focus on their health and wellness. Thank you to all that participated! Look for information on the 2020 It’s Time Texas Community Challenge at www.uctx.gov in December 2019.

HOME SAFETY Avoiding fire hazard and other disasters
Snap. Crackle. Pop.
Is your home wiring trying to tell you something? ARE YOUR ELECTRIAL OUTLETS OVERSTUFFED WITH POWER strips, extension cords and outlet splitters? That’s not just an unsightly tripping hazard-it’s a fire hazard. Every year, U.S fire departments respond to an estimated 25,900 home electrical fires. These fires cause an estimated 280 deaths, 1,125 injuries and $1.1billion in property loss. Thirty nine percent of home electrical fires involve outlets or other electrical wiring. Plugging more appliances, lights, and electronics into a single outlet than its circuit is meant to handle can cause the receptacle or cords to overheat and can potentially start an electrical fire. The Consumer Product Safety Commission attributes 3,500 fires each year to outlet issues. How do you know if you’re pushing your outlets and home wiring to the brink? Check for these common indicators of potential electrical hazards. n Hot Outlets. If you can’t touch a cord, plug or faceplate for more than five seconds without saying “Ouch!” the outlet is overloaded.
n Odd smells. An odd smell coming from an outlet or your fuse box or breaker can be a sign of a serious problem.
n Shocks. Small shocks from touching appliances or outlets could point to danger.
n Sparking. This is never a good sign. If a breaker panel, fuse box or outlet is sparking, get an electrician ASAP.
n Blown Fuses. If fuses continue to blow after you replace them, or circuit breakers constantly trip, the wiring cannot handle the outlet’s load. n Flickering lights. Flickering or dimming lights could indicate an overloaded outlet. n Wavering screens. Similarly, if your computer or TV screen wavers when a large appliance is plugged in, it could mean the outlet is overstressed.
n Buzzing. What does electricity sound like? When things are working properly, nothing. Loose prongs or outlets or fraying wire can cause the current to jump, producing a buzzing sound. Too many extension cords. If extension cords are necessary for your daily routine, your home’s wiring is inadequate. When it comes to high-wattage appliances, such as refrigerators or dryers, never plug them into extension cords.
Any of these symptoms could mean your home’s wiring can’t keep up with the increasing energy demands of your large appliances and electronics. Call a licensed electrician to give you an estimate for wiring repairs or upgrades. 8

UC COMMUNITY SNOWFEST 2019
A DECADE
OF SNOW It might not snow in Texas, but in Universal City, it has snowed for the past decade ... 10 THE GATEWAY
April/May 2019
This year’s chilly weather prepared the crowds for the 10th annual Snowfest which drew the largest crowd ever! Universal City’s signature event has morphed over the years from its humble beginnings in 2009 when Kris England, then serving on the Universal City Parks and Recreation Commission, had the idea that a family-oriented event with man-made snow would be a great addition to Universal City’s slate of community events. Starting with a snow slide, snow play areas, and a few booths sponsored by local non-profit organizations, the first Snowfest drew several hundred people. 10 years later, Snowfest boasts more than 17 rides and attractions, more than 30 vendors, live entertainment, CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

and, of course, the 4 custom snow slides and two areas where children can play in the snow – not to mention its own mascot, Yoosi Bear. “It takes several months of planning and a couple weeks to prepare the park but it is worth it when you see the kids smiling and community having a great time.” – Randy Luensmann, Director of Public Works.

Snowfest’s success relies on the support of several community organizations and local businesses. Patriot Martial Arts has not only been a yearly sponsor of the event but also brings a demo team to entertain the crowd with their various skills. HEB has supported the Snowfest for several years signing on as the event’s presenting sponsor. Other sponsors such as Cricket Wireless, Mireles Ice, HMT, HDR, Elite Family Dental, McCoy’s, Security One, Mr. Gatti’s Pizza, Airesmith, FastMed Urgent Care, KB Homes, Waste
Mgmt, Jones and Carter and Mary Eddy Global Realty, helped to make 2019 the best year to date From trash collection to crowd control, it takes a staff and volunteers of hundreds working in shifts to keep Snowfest in order. As families entered, volunteers from UC Methodist Church greeted them with smiles and stamped hands for entry. For the second year, Navy Federal Credit Union employees assisted with lines at the climbing towers, petting zoo, and other rides. Thank you to TSgt Derius Jackson, Military Training Flight Chief from the 12th Training Squadron (JBSA Randolph), and his students for their ongoing support at Snowfest. TSgt Jackson and his flight of 25 students rotated various areas assisting with lines and equipment. Their favorite area to work was the custom 4 lane snow slide! Calvary Church, HDR Engineering, and community members also assisted with rides and lines all over the park. Hosting over 8,000 attendees in Universal City Park would not be as successful without the consistent, ongoing support from the community and military neighbors from Joint Base San Antonio - Randolph. Thank you for doing your part to make Universal City’s Snowfest a success over 10 years!

EASTER EGG SAFETY TIPS
Ensure an “Egg”citing Easter Don’t let a spoiled egg ruin your Easter fun! Eggs can carry the toxic bacteria called Salmonella. Although Easter eggs are typically thoroughly cooked and do not pose as great a risk as raw or partially cooked eggs, Salmonella can be found on both the outside and inside of raw eggs! So, it’s important to guard against cross contamination before they’re cooked, and to follow proper handling and storage of cooked eggs. Here are some tips to make your Easter “egg”stra special: n Choose the freshest eggs possible and open the carton before you buy to make sure the shells are intact.
been out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours (1 hour in temperatures 90° or higher).
n Keep fresh eggs refrigerated at 41F or colder until it’s time to cook them.
n Don’t color or hide eggs with cracked shells.
n Wash your hands thoroughly before handling eggs at every step of the process: cooking, cooling, dyeing and hiding. Egg shells are porous and let bacteria penetrate, especially after cooking. n If you plan to hollow out egg shells by using your mouth to blow out the raw egg through holes in the shell, first wash the egg in hot water and rinse it in a solution of 1 teaspoon chlorine bleach per half cup of water. Or use pasteurized shell eggs.
n Use only food coloring or food-grade egg dyes to color eggs. n Once the cooked eggs are decorated, return them to the refrigerator within two hours. They can be stored up to a week inside the refrigerator.
n Cook the eggs until both the yolk and white are firm, not runny.
n If you’re going to hide real eggs outside, be sensible — don’t hide them where they can come in contact with animals, birds or lawn chemicals. Do not hide eggs with cracked shells, because bacteria could contaminate the inside. The total time for hiding and hunting eggs should not exceed 2 hours.
n Refrigerate hard-cooked eggs in a clean container, not directly in the refrigerator door, until ready to dye them. Do not eat hard-cooked eggs that have
n If you wish to use dyed hardcooked eggs as a centerpiece or other decoration, cook extra eggs just for this purpose and discard them after use. Sources: www.foodsafety.gov

Writing for Life
Saturday, April 6 at 6 PM
The Friends of the Library Welcome Linda Simone
An after-hours program hosted by the Friends of the Library. We hope you will join us for a special community evening as members of Unlimited Horizons, a writer’s group with long ties to Universal City and to the library, share their love of poetry, read original poems, and offer their reflections on the work. Donations will be accepted at the door and will benefit the Friends of the UC Library.
Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30 PM Writing for Life is a series hosted by the Friends of the Library featuring the voices of local authors. Linda Simone has crossed many borders—from Manhattan to San Antonio, and from roles such as corporate writer to watercolorist. Simone captured these transformations in The River Will Save Us (2018), a poetry collection whose “shimmering trails” Paul David Atkins writes, “transport readers on a series of journeys.” Her work has been included in many anthologies and journals in San Antonio’s Tricentennial chapbook and exhibition (at Plaza de Armas through April 27), in Poet Laureate Laurie Ann Guerrero’s “Love Poems to San Antonio,” and on the move on city buses in San Antonio and Norwalk, CT.
Poetry Transforms the Ordinary! A Workshop with Linda Simone Saturday, April 20, 10:30 AM to noon Why does a red cardinal or an old hammer capture your attention? Use your powers of observation to unlock the poetry in everyday things. In a fun 90-minute workshop, you will read sample poems and write your own ode to common things. Linda Simone will display objects for inspiration or bring your own. Come! Discover! Write!
