Set in Greece at the time of the Nazi occupation, Alan Fleishman’s new book tells the story of Theo Kantos, a dress shop owner who has a desperate choice to make if he is to save his family. With the Gestapo pounding on every door, no Jew in Athens is safe. This multi-media presentation offers the historical background upon which the story is based. Nearly 90 percent of Greece’s Jews perished in the Holocaust, the highest percentage of Jews lost in any country. Alan’s book was inspired by the true story of his Greek cousins who survived hidden in a cellar by a shepherd and aided by their Christian friends.

Positive emotions are critical for our health and wellbeing. She also provides practical, evidence-based tips for easily cultivating more awe and gratitude in daily life. Dr. Gordon, PhD, is a social psychologist at UCSF. Her research focuses on prosociality in social interactions — in other words, why aren’t we nicer to the people in our lives and what can we do about it?

• November 20

Learn about the benefits of the CCT course, developed by a team of contemplative scholars, clinical psychologists, and researchers at Stanford University, designed to develop the qualities of compassion, empathy, and kindness for oneself and others. This program is free but pre-registration is required. The prayer book constantly refers to God as “King of the universe,” and on Rosh Hashanah, we specifically celebrate crowning God as sovereign. Does this traditional image still hold relevance and meaning for us? Do we need a new metaphor to refer to God? Four of our local rabbis will teach texts about the possible meaning of this God-language and discuss what metaphor for the divine has the most relevance for them. Participants will include Rabbi Nat Ezray of Congregation Beth Jacob, Rabbi Corey Helfand of Peninsula Sinai Congregation, Rabbi Sara Mason-Barkin of Peninsula Temple Beth El, and Rabbi Dan Feder of Peninsula Temple Sholom.  Facilitated Rabbi Lavey Derby, PJCC Director of Jewish Life

Are you a “solo-ager?” That’s a contemporary name for people over 60 who have neither a spouse nor children, or whose families are geographically remote. Because older adults often rely upon their adult children to help with the routine tasks of daily life, being a solo-ager presents a special set of challenges. And at least 20% of baby boomers fall into this category — double previous generations! This introductory program identifies what solo-agers need to plan. As we approach Israel’s 70th anniversary, we will explore what the most recent research on the first Arab-Israeli War reveals about the military aims of the Israelis, the Palestinians and the Arab states; the nature of the war as a conflict between nationalist movements or as a war of Jihad; and the resulting creation of Palestinian refugees and Jewish refugees from Arab countries. Connections will be drawn between the consequences of the 1948 war and current Middle Eastern realities and problems. Benny Morris is professor in the Middle East Studies Department at Ben Gurion University of the Negev and since 2015 has been visiting professor of Israel Studies at Georgetown University. One of Israel’s pre-eminent historians, his academic work examining the Zionist narrative and the establishment of the State has provoked controversy on both sides of the political spectrum. Morris was a journalist at the Jerusalem Post and has written articles in both the Israeli press and in publications worldwide. He has published ten books, including The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947 – 1949 and 1948: The First Arab-Israeli War.
