GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF THE PJCC

We celebrate the dynamic gifts of Jewish culture, tradition, ethics, and community we received from generations before us.

WHOLENESS OF BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT

Shleimut

We respect and nurture each individual’s journey toward wholeness and see our role as a catalyst.

Our house is open wide to all, and we embrace the diversity of culture, opinion, religion, and identity.

OUR COMMUNITY OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS

We are a hub for all events and activities that enrich our lives

REPAIRING THE WORLD

Tikkun Olam

Each person makes a difference, and together we are responsible for improving the world through our actions.

ENHANCING JEWISH JOURNEYS

The PJCC's pluralistic, inclusive, and welcoming environment is an important destination for families seeking to raise Jewish children. Our preschool, Treehouse afterschool program, Camp Keff, and a wide array of family engagement opportunities support development of lasting Jewish identity.

For the Beshari-Liphshitz family, what started as a journey in the ordinary sense, soon became a Jewish journey. When Moria was asked to teach Jewish Studies in our local community through the Shlichut Institute—an organization that sends Israelis around the globe as cultural emissaries—she jumped at the chance.

Having grown up in a family that instilled in her the importance of leadership and Jewish principles, Moria’s post has allowed her to actualize these principles and spread Israeli culture to American children. But the learning hasn’t ended in the classroom. The experience has given Moria and her husband, Oded, a new view of their Jewish identity. Being immersed in the PJCC environment and the larger Jewish diaspora community has allowed them to see that they are part of something much greater, much more diverse, and much more tightknit than they had previously realized.

Enrolling two of their four children in the PJCC Preschool has been a great privilege as well. Moria and Oded are thankful for the PJCC’s generous financial assistance, which has allowed their kids to receive a foundational Jewish education. The little ones are learning a lot, have quickly adjusted to their new environment, made great friends, and are thriving.

While uprooting your life, moving across the world, and setting up as a young family might seem like a wild idea, the Beshari-Liphshitz family couldn’t be happier that their journey led them to the PJCC. This opportunity has given them a new and inspiring perspective on life and enriched their Jewish identities.

We are grateful that the PJCC makes Jewish journeys accessible and meaningful for Israeli families like ours.

– Oded Liphshitz

IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE

The PJCC is a trusted lifeline for adults, addressing physical, mental, spiritual, and communal needs in a supportive environment. Cultural activities and regular fitness are known to extend lifespan and improve quality of life. Our weekly discussion groups, annual concert series, art exhibits, supportive transportation programs, and physical wellness activities serve to stimulate minds, elevate souls, and combat social isolation, by building a vibrant community that enables friendships to flourish.

When retirement was on the horizon, it dawned on Cathy and Tom Brown that the cherished, built-in communities they had through work would soon be gone forever. They knew they needed to find some way to continue leading fulfilling, meaningful, and healthy lives. could serve their physical, social, and spiritual needs.

After an illustrious career as Director of the PJCC Preschool, beginning at the former Belmont site in 1975, the transition from staff member to center member was a seamless one for Cathy—not only because of her years of service, but because she felt such a deep and strong connection to the community.

The word that most often falls from Cathy’s lips when describing the PJCC is “comfortable.” Whether attending a Jewish Life class, working out in the gym, or participating in cultural arts programs, she feels like she is in a place that prioritizes belonging and facilitates meaningful connections.

Having mobility issues, it meant a lot to Cathy that the PJCC had personal trainers who could accommodate her special needs. Through customized workouts, she has seen a marked difference in her physical abilities, enabling her to live more freely and with more confidence. Likewise, Tom benefitted from personal training when faced with an injury and now has an easy and effective regimen he can follow on his own.

While a big part of one’s quality of life is physical wellbeing, the social aspect is equally important. The PJCC has become a place where the couple has found lasting relationships.

Tom is also appreciative of the little things that make the PJCC special—like being greeted by name each time he comes in. This didn’t mean much to him when he was younger, but at this stage in his life he really sees the value in finding a space where he truly belongs.

Without the PJCC as a trusted lifeline, Cathy and Tom are not sure how they could’ve aged so gracefully. They are forever grateful to the PJCC for enriching their lives with good company, healthy habits, and for nurturing their Jewish values.

ENRICHING COMMUNITY

The PJCC engages thousands of people in joyfully exploring Jewish values, ideas, and traditions each year. We provide a welcoming space to enrich Jewish identity, deepen community connection, and nurture a relationship with Israel—offering a diverse array of Jewish learning opportunities, community-wide educational programs, and holiday celebrations.

The day after October 7, 2023, Lisa Joy Rosner and her family felt heartbroken and in desperate need of community. Not sure what to do or where to go, a friend shared that the PJCC was holding space for people to gather and process the unfathomable attack. As they walked through the PJCC’s front doors, they immediately felt at home, with a sense of safety and comfort.

This was not the first time the PJCC brought connection and community to the family. Fifteen years prior, Lisa Joy and her husband Sheldon Berg realized that the secular preschool their kids were attending was not a fit for the Jewish family they envisioned raising. Upon touring the PJCC, they found exactly what they’d had in mind: a preschool that would allow their kids to explore and enrich their Jewish identities, while building a strong foundation for learning and growth.

In the new school year, their oldest children, Harley and Dina, started at the PJCC Preschool and loved it. The following year, Ruby and Zara joined them, thus beginning a powerful and enriching relationship with the PJCC.

As the kids grew, they transformed from students to leaders. The family began by volunteering at the PJCC—serving food and running activities at the community-wide celebration, creating items to donate to local nonprofits at the annual MLK Day of Service, and face painting and leading Israeli dancing at the Yom Yisrael (Israel Day) gathering.

This ingrained sense of tikkun olam (repairing the world), first learned in preschool, continues to this day. Lisa Joy and Sheldon are so proud of how their children are giving back to the community that helped nurture them.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS & UNDERSTANDING

The PJCC stands as a beacon of unity, fostering relationships across diverse religious, ethnic, and civic communities. Our membership reflects the incredible diversity of our local population, with programs helping shape attitudes and raise generations of people from all backgrounds with an understanding of Jewish values and people, providing an antidote to hate and bias, in a world where antisemitism and bigotry persist.

For Rieko and Timothy Wong, community is about connection—about listening, learning, and showing up for others. A leader on the PJCC’s Board of Directors, an active charter member, and a long-time partner in strengthening the community, Tim understands the importance of allyship—especially in a time of rising antisemitism. So, when he was invited to participate in a Civity workshop at the PJCC, he immediately said yes. Civity, a national nonprofit, helps people build relationships rooted in respect and empathy by offering a framework for thoughtful, meaningful conversations. As an endocrinologist at Kaiser for 31 years, including 16 as physician-in-chief, Tim sought to understand the unique experiences and needs of his patients. Whether in an exam room, a boardroom, or across the dinner table, he believes in the power of listening.

On the day of the workshop, Tim was paired with someone he had never met before. Guided by Civity’s approach of open-ended questions and deep listening, they quickly discovered a shared love of fishing. It was a small detail, almost incidental—but in that moment, it became a bridge. This connection led to an immediate rapport, which became a springboard for more significant conversation. Because conversation, like fishing, takes patience and depth. Stay too close to the surface, and you might not

Inspired by his experience, Tim is committed to carrying the Civity training forward, helping others learn how to “fish” so they too can create relationships that foster understanding, empathy, and a stronger, more

When people ask why I became so involved with the PJCC, given that I’m not Jewish, I often say that the Jewish value of welcoming all really resonated with me.
– Timothy Wong
