ow would you def ine success as a DJ? Is it a Beat por t top 10 hit or a sold out tour? W hat are your thoughts on this? For me personally it is a DJ who has every thing in his vein s and body: g reat DJ skill s (technical), not pu shing a seq uencer star t/stop but ton or Sy nc but ton s, a DJ who can enter tain the crowd w ithout play ing commercial top 10 hits or easy food. It’s someone who makes g reat record s and work s HARD! “But unfor t unately the world has changed and now success to a popular DJ is someone who has enough money for promotion to sell out w ith tickets and play the same set on every single event or festival. It’s a shame! That’s what it has become to be a “popular DJ.” If you could pick one track to make a person fall in love w ith techno, which one would that be? I would pick “Acid Eif fel” f rom Laurent Gar nier & Shazz and so many other track s. “The Night of The Jag uar” f rom Rolando, Underg round Resistance (in general all releases), Kev in Saunderson, etc. Continue reading the f ull ar ticle at u slmag.com

K

alm Kaos - John Langdon (al so k now n as SlingR), half of Holly wood’s Electro Hou se duo Kalm Koaz, along w ith par t ner Filby (al so k now n as Motoe Hau s), stirred up debate in the dance scene af ter John’s thesi s on the EDM indu stry versu s private eq uit y f irms was f irst publi shed on renow ned publication The Huf f ing ton Post. John i s a g uy w ith his hear t in the right place. His undy ing passion for mu sic – and EDM in par ticular – led him to w rite an opinion piece about the current climate in the indu stry where leading promoters and dance mu sic brand s are bought by large invest ment f ir ms at an astonishing pace. Langdon is a rare combination of a talented dance mu sic ar ti st — coupled w ith 20 years of ex perience on Wall Street as a private eq uit y investor at f irms rang ing f rom Platinum Eq uit y to Kohlberg & Co. It prov ides him w ith a uniq ue perspective to ask q uestion s, to add to the current dialog ue, and ex press q ueries and concer n s regarding the f ut ure of the EDM scene. Wilf Libgot t of Hammarica. com got in-depth w ith John Langdon to discu ss his opinion piece and the plan s for his band Kalm Kaoz. You ju st w rote a thesi s on the current state of the EDM Indu stry

par ticularly in the U.S. It has got ten much prai se the minute it was f irst publi shed on The Huf f ing ton Post w ith hundred s of people talking on social media about it. W hat was your motivation to w rite the piece? I love mu sic, passionately, emotively; and dancing! I fer v idly adore festival s, ever since going to Gratef ul Dead shows. I al so fell for electronic mu sic the minute I f irst heard it. A DJ team named the LSDJ’s u sed to play in Denver of ten while I lived there in 1999-2000. They were a clear precursor to Electro and I f reaking loved those g uys. I danced so hard to those kats. Going to dance festival s and dancing like a madman was a nat ural tran sition and has been very impor tant to me, in terms of mu sical g row th, creating new and lasting lov ing relation ships, and celebrating life. I simply felt profoundly compelled to w rite… say ing to my gang on the way home f rom U ltra “I feel like I’m going to burst. I’ve got to w rite thi s dow n.” I was compelled by my love of hou se mu sic. I was compelled by my hi story in private eq uit y, understanding the PE (private eq uit y) indu stry, and a desire to share one g uy’s v iew, coming f rom a cer tain place and ex perience in life. PE (Private Eq uit y), like electronic mu sic,

has many “genres” and strateg ies, so it’s impor tant for people to understand that every thing i s more complicated than it f irst appears and to not lump all together in one basket. This said, as we all in stinctively k now, Wall Street capital and PE, par ticularly relative to SFX’s “genre,” hi story and power, move mountain s and it’s impor tant to open a dialog ue about its entrance into dance mu sic. I w rote the piece becau se I care, love hou se mu sic, and have perhaps a somewhat uniq ue v iew. I want to bring at tention to the topic, add a bit of light, and be sure we all…think, talk and seek k nowledge. With k nowledge, the lovers of hou se mu sic, and other indu stries af fected by f inancial f irms, can bring honest y, passion and rigor to the debate. Knowledge i s power, debate is healthy, and love for mu sic i s the driver. You describe how big private eq uit y f und s could have a drastic ef fect on the fees talent i s able to ask for their performances in clubs and festival s. Is there a ‘DJ bubble’ and is the top talent over paid in the current climate? Is there a true “price” for ar t? Jerry Garcia once said “I’ve always thought the Gratef ul Dead should be spon sored by the gover nment or something. It should be a public ser v ice, you k now, and they should set u s up at places USLMAG.COM | USL MAGAZINE

that need to get high. That’s the kind of thing we should be doing. We shouldn’t be doing business.” I think if you read the piece, I’ve laid out a host of q uestion s and data points that, perhaps, suggest the market is topping. I hope I’m w rong, but markets always top and of ten recover to at tain higher high s. It’s the nat ure of things, f rom the inter net to disco. My opinion i s based simply upon my ex perience and in stincts and I’m only one voice. I like to look at hard facts. The mu sic indu stry, and the enter tainment indu stry as a whole, has a long history, though much of it i s prior to the incredible power of technolog y and the inter net, so many bets are of f and predicting the f ut ure based upon historic events i s challeng ing. This said, the g row th of all indu stries, as w ith the net itself, have peak s and valleys, by def inition. Mankind does as well (for an interesting reference point, see the Elliot t Wave Theory). A s I said in the ar ticle, however, “the most beautif ul thing of all is that we can f inally dream of f inding the nex t Mozar t; Mozar t 2.0 Cometh. His mom i s making him dinner right now somewhere on the globe. Will the Mozar t(s) of the world be paid and make money? Fi st in the air, I say yes. Of course, talent, beaut y and the imag inative mind of the child w ill per pet ually stand alone at times and ref u se the powers that be. They w ill ref u se to sell through cor porate channel s, ref u se to play at their festival s. The fan s of these geniu s maverick s, no mat ter how many ar ti sts the “big g uys” manufact ure in their plants, w ill still pay to hear The Mag ic F lute.” To what ex tent do you feel there could be a balance bet ween independent promoters and the new large EDM companies like SFX Enter tainment. Is there room for

both, or w ill most of the independent promoters be pu shed out of the market over time? I believe many an swers in life come f rom hi story and we of ten have shor t memories. I believe the an swer, or at least a piece of the puzzle, resides there. If one look s at the hi story and outcomes of “roll-ups” (indu stry con solidation plays) in the enter tainment indu stry, like those of Clear Channel and Live Nation, the an swer becomes a bit more clear. I believe hi story suggests it’s likely going to be a challeng ing period for independents and promoters. W hat would be the most impor tant thing for dance mu sic fan s to remember af ter reading your piece? A s I said at the end of the piece, “It i s up to u s how thi s goes in the end. We are the cu stomers. We are the fan s. It i s our at tention they seek, at g reat costs, and it i s our belief in the mu sic that resonates through time. “Fi st in the air, long live hou se mu sic. Fi st in the air, I love hou se mu sic.” Kalm Kaoz, the combination of both Filby and you (SlingR), i s your producer/DJ team. W here did the name Kalm Kaoz come f rom and what’s your mu sical v i sion? We describe ourselves as a Komplex tro-driven rock ‘n roll band. We feel Electro as a genre i s ef fectively rock ‘n roll if you li sten closely. The note and chord prog ression s, etc., and general struct ure of genre in spires that feeling… rock ‘n roll. We want to rock the F out! To Filby and me, we feel we are a rock ‘n roll band. The “in struments” we u se, or form in which we hurl power chord prog ression s and sound i s inf inite. I play the g uitar and have been in rock band s and u se thi s for much of our midi and song creation, along w ith the piano. It seems to u s that rock ‘n roll i sn’t so much def ined by the in strument, but by the geniu ses that came before u s in the 60′s and 70′s and their at tit ude; rocking out

3 7

and sing ing of love, hear tache, and prov iding a voice of alter native v iews. Kalm Kaoz strives to represent thi s at tit ude, v i sion and mu sic. We feel our name i s illu strative of the beaut y and chaos of the time and, ironically, it suites Filby and me personally. He’s calm, I adore chaos, beautif ul chaos. Within chaos comes new ideas, new paradig ms, and a chance to break mold s and the notion that “you have to do things thi s way or that.” Rock ‘n roll i sn’t about liv ing in a box. It’s about spreading love, rocking out, blow ing up festival s, and celebrating life. The universe brought Filby into my life – the dude is ju st epic and the band was formed – t wo g uys. We thought about our message and logo and shit and, to me, my nephew Jack… no person on thi s ear th makes me laugh more than Jack and his t w in brother Ted. They “make” trouble and I love to make it w ith them. Boy ish mi schief i s key to Filby and me. Those t wo t urd s are the basi s for our “g uys;” we call them the Mayhem Tw in s. The idea keeps u s g rounded in joy and cheekiness and we’ve got lots of ideas about how the Tw in s can spread joy and a bit of mi schief… You of ten cite The Doors and Gratef ul Dead, among other 60s and 70s rock band s. In what way do they inf luence Kalm Kaoz’s mu sical v i sion? The 60′s and 70′s were challeng ing times for the country and the mu sic was bold, brilliant and profoundly powerf ul. The famou s pict ure of that g uy put ting a f lower into a U.S. military g uy’s g un – that was love, powerf ul love, put ting a cork in the g un s of our gover nment. It speak s a million word s. The mu sical ar ti sts of the time were seekers, asking q uestion s, and try ing to f ind a path – a way to live while the world was in chaos. Hou se mu sic i s about the same ideas in many ways and is ju st as

powerful. Just Instagram house music and the images that come up evoke peace, love and joy, and are clearly stating “we’re all here trying to celebrate our lives.” It’s not about “partying,” but rather celebrating. We need to get that message out so the powers that be understand us all better. History repeats itself time and again. We need people that don’t understand the music and our festivals to get it. It’s important to house music’s future, to Kalm Kaoz, and to the fans of dance music. Jim Morri son i s my icon, my mu se. Jim was a poet, f irst and foremost, and a seeker. He was a true Renai ssance man, geniu s, and maverick. There i s no box to put him in; he stand s alone. Jim’s irreverence toward the “system,” hi s poetry and streng th of hi s pen, combined w ith the Dead’s belief in the impor tance of mu sic, celebration, compassion, and con stantly creating mi schief, i s Kalm Kaoz’s spirit. The mu sic of the time was simply dope. The Stones, Zeppelin, Dead, and The Doors, to name ju st a few, created mag ic – mu sical mag ic. I mean, F leet wood Mac’s Rumors i s, like, perfect. It’s all a treasure trove of mag ical mu sic w ith potent messages. We hope to be a channel for that energ y and mu sic to f ind a new audience. W hat’s nex t for your band and on the mu sic f ront? The rock ‘n roll band s that created those epic albums were touched by the universe. The universe helped them create such powerf ul mu sic to get people’s at tention, help them deal w ith the challeng ing moments and energ y of the 60′s and 70s; the power, creativ it y and complexit y of their mu sic ju st makes your jaw drop. Like, how the hell did you g uys create such brilliance, at w ill, time and again? Filby and I want to k now! We’re hoping to work w ith any of those g uys, perhaps soon, and we’d like to re-create the albums of these masters in the electro/trance

3 9

genres along side them, bring ing the essence of their mu sic back to an entirely new generation. The mu sic is so potent, f illed w ith power, passion and love. We hope to be a conduit for the Bob Weir’s, Jimmy Page’s, Paul McCar t ney’s and Keith Richard’s of the world to bring that bang ing…lov ing… epic rock ‘n roll to big outdoor festival s around the world. Their mu sic is so impor tant; it should be heard again and again, generation af ter generation. We’d like to simply be a conduit for that to happen. Are there any specif ic projects in the work s? First, we’ve for med a charit y called Hexagon Hou se. We are going to f ind kid s that are gonna be tossed away by some system, but are inherently wor thy of a good life and love. In f ive years, we hope there’s a lasting, compounding impact. As Beethoven believed, unity through music. We’ve got a host of projects in the works, much of which we can’t discuss just yet. Life is grand and we’re having great fun; we’re made to love and laugh. That’s our true natures, but the world is a tough game at times. If we can help make it a little softer, through raging our faces off and celebrating, while helping some kids, voila. Lots of laughs, spreading love and compassion and mischief through music.

Morning Anchor – CBS 46 | Better Mornings Atlanta Atlanta morning news just got a little sexier and Brandon Rudat isn’t just using his investigative instincts or degree from NYU to get the job done. Now-a-days, CBS 46 Better Mornings‘ Producers are employing some muscle to increase ratings. All around Atlanta you see billboards and plastered MARTA buses of Brandon Rudat, Tracye Hutchins and Jennifer Valdez showing off their sexy tattoos and a more edgier look than the typically boring news show enterprises. But, will this do the job? Will Brandon, Tracye and Jennifer be able to bring back some much needed viewers to channel 46? A source from the other news station says that even with all Brandon’s muscles, CBS 46 still lack luster and the ratings aren’t increasing! Regardless of media warfare, you can’t hide the fact that in Atlanta, Brandon is holding the trump card when it comes to male news anchors with chops. Don’t hurt ‘em Brandon! QUOTE: “An Emmy award winning journalist, Brandon came to Atlanta after anchoring and reporting for KTLA 5 News in Los Angeles, CA. Prior to KTLA-TV, Brandon was a news anchor at WHDHTV, NBC 7News, in Boston, MA . Before joining WHDH-TV, Brandon was an investigative reporter and fill-in anchor at WVIT-TV in Hartford, CT. From going undercover and busting illegal street vendors to exposing a company manufacturing illegal fire extinguishers, Brandon broke some of the states’ biggest stories.” –cbsatlanta.com

AN INTERVIEW WITH

K AR LIE REDD OF VH1’S Love & HIP HOP ATLANTA Interview By Christopher Mobley

You’ve seen her on VH1’s Love & Hip Hop Atlanta You’ve already heard her hot singles ‘Louie, Prada,Gucci’ and ‘A Girl Has Needs’ on the airwaves. You might even know a couple of ladies who are looking f ly thanks to her line of lip-gloss and hair. She is the beautiful, multi-talented Ms. Karlie Redd and USL Magazine recently had the pleasure of interviewing the star. Without a doubt, you do have the good looks regardless of age. But everyone from fans and the people on VH1’s Love & Hip Hop Atlanta seem to have made a big deal about your age. Anything you would like to say to them? I’m glad I’m not revealing my age; because it makes more people talk about me and want to know more. “The more you keep yourself a mystery, the more people want to know. But I’m not going to give them what they want.” As far as everyone else, they’re just Hating. I’m not 50 or 40. They just try to guess because I don’t tell them my age. A lady never tells her age. So people are going to hate, especially if they’re the same age as you. K. Michelle is the same age as me, but obviously she won’t put that on herself, she would rather put attention towards me. But that’s okay; she can keep her name in her mouth. Can you tell us more about your new Redd Line Hair and Redd Lip Gloss? Of course, Redd Lip Gloss is my own brand of lip gloss.

K. Michele is the same age as me, but obviously she won’t put that on herself, she would rather put attention towards me.

Redd Line Hair is something that I wanted to do because a lot of ladies out there were always asking me about my hair and telling me that it was beautiful. Even though I do have long hair, I wear weave to protect my own hair. So I decided to put out my own line for the ladies to see what I’ve been doing, how my hair looks and give themselves a little touch of Karlie Redd. We have already heard your singles ‘Louis, Prada, Gucci’ and ‘A Girl Has Needs.’ Can we expect an album or new single in the near future? Yes, my album is coming soon and I’m putting out a diss record in a few weeks. Really! Who is the victim in the record going to be? You’re just going to have to wait and see. Trust me, you will be surprised. What really made you want to get into the music industry in the first place? What other producers and artists have you been working with? I wanted to do it since I was a little girl and I’ve always had a talent for singing and song writing. I’ve worked with a lot of different artists and producers. Currently, I’m working with T-Pain, but I’ve worked with Beenie Man and Sean Kingston in the past. A

lot of different talented people in the industry are working on my projects. Do you have any advice for people who want to get into the industry as singers and songwriters? Get with a dope ass producer. Because dope ass producer will help you get to that point in your career and guide you in the best way he knows how. Also, practice makes perfect! Keep writing, keep pushing forward and perfect your craft. Fans remember when you were VH1’s Scream Queens. Can we expect to see you in any films or new shows soon? What type of genres and characters do you see yourself playing in the future? I will be appearing in a new movie coming out soon called We Are Family. I am always appearing in movies and TV shows. And I’m not just an artist; I’ve been an actress since day one, even before I became interested in pursuing a career in the music industry. As far as characters in the future, I can play anything from horror to comedy to drama. I can play all sorts of roles. When you are a real actress, you can play anything. Let’s talk about love and relationship! Are you seeing anyone at the moment? Yes, I am! He’s a very lucky guy. I know that there are a lot of men out there o wish they could be with you, especially after that sexy modeling video of you loaded on World Star Hip Hop. How do you stay in shape and keep that gorgeous figure? Thank you. I stay in shape by dancing and doing choreography for my performances, so that definitely keeps me in shape. What has your experiences been like on Love& Hip Hop Atlanta? It’s basically my life. It’s a great experience. It’s my life, only with cameras in front of it. “I don’t live a boring life; I live a crazy life.” Love and Hip Hop Atlanta just gave me an opportunity to show my life.

So we can expect a lot more craziness next season? Can’t tell you that. I gotta keep you guessing! Anything you want to say to all the people out there working towards their dreams in Hollywood and the music industry? I want to give a shout out to everyone working towards his or her dreams. Those people are just like me. So I want to tell all of them to keep working towards their dreams and never give up, because I know I’m not going to give up. I heard that you turned up and did it bigger than most for New Years, by going out of the country. Where did you go? Yes I did! I had a great time. My people and I went to St. Martin Island, and Anguilla. After that, I spent some time in St. Barts.

10 THINGS That Makes A Good Looking Man Unattractive Part 2 By Wilford G.

1 2 3 UNEMPLOYMENT So it seems that unemployment was the biggest no-no that would make a good-looking man unattractive. But I ask, is the unemployment due to the down-turn in the economy or is he just a loser looking to be supported by anyone who adores his special features? From our survey, women really have a particular interest in this question and they despise a broke man!

B A D - H YGI E N E Both women and gay men had a big issue with a good-looking man having bad hygiene. Honestly, if you’re a good looking anybody, you’re halfway there. Why would you mess up all that goodness by being smelly? Some people may like a little musk, but cheesy you know what’s aren’t tasty at all. I’m a man… I know! And I wouldn’t even consider not washing mines before a professional!

4 5 COCK Y Okay, it seems like many people had issue with good-looking guys using their looks as head-bangers. Nothing detracts from a good looking man than him thinking it’s all about his wants and needs. Personally, give me an ordinary woman or man with great taste, style, smile, conversation and knows how to throw down in the bedroom and the kitchen.

USL MAGAZINE | USLMAG.COM

LOW CONFIDENCE Woman seems to detest a good-looking man who doesn’t have confidence. I can understand that. Most women in general, look to their man for comfort and protection. They look for a man that can be their superman in public and in the bedroom. After all, who really want to be with someone who isn’t sure of whom he or she is?

8 4

NO STYLE This is an issue gay and straight men chimed in on. I guess they were all good looking. All jokes aside though; a stylish man is appealing and an ordinary one would look even more appealing. So gents, whatever you gotta do to get your game up… do it! Follow us on Pinterest at USLMagazine and get some style tips. You can even go to Lenox Mall and scout the mannequins in Bloomies, Versace, Neimans, and Kenneth Cole. And for those who are thrifty, H&M is located in Atlantic Station (Midtown, Atlanta). Oh, and stylish doesn’t mean having your goodies all out for the whole world to see. I know some of you men use that to advertise, but that is what Facebook, craigslist, instagram and twitter is for; finding anonymous hook-ups. Yeah, I’m talking to all y’all; heads up ladies, girlfriends and wives! Photo By Stan Redfern Model Brian Murphy Stylist Patrick Kelly Warbrobe Ken Barber Make Up By Patrice Story Hair By CJ

6

FITNESS Okay, the gay men have this on lock. They want a good-looking man that is fit and healthy. You know what I say about that… get your game up before you search for that Adonis. It seems like most people in general always want a dime when they are only a 5. And big women wanting a skinny man. I really don’t get that, but to each his/ her own! Either way, it’s always my rule to become the personal I want to attract. Then, I’ll have more in common with that personal and I won’t look like a damn fool because I get caught in lieing about who I’m pretending to be. I will be honest and truthful!

7

BAD ATTITUDE Both woman and gay men chimed in on this one as. They said they hate good-looking men who have a bad attitudes. I must concur! A good-looking man would seem very ugly if he has a nasty attitude. So to all the good looking guys out there, if you have a bad attitude because you know you look good and everybody wants you; not really! This makes you uglier than the most unattractive person on earth. Matter-of-fact, you would be thee ugliest person on earth!

8 9

BAD TEETH This is really huge for gay men. They said no bad teeth here. Honestly, everybody should say no to bad teeth. At some point in your life, you should be able to afford to go to the dentist. It’s no excuse that your teeth are bad and you try to make up for it because you’re really good looking. Man, get a grip and get that mug fixed! And while you’re at it, get them whittened too. A CHEAPSKATE Woman and gay men chimed in on this once again. I guess nothing is uglier than a good-looking man that’s a cheapskate. I must say I’m allergic to cheap people. I consider myself a very thoughtful person who gives really nice gifts. So, if I give you an expensive gift, dammit, I want one as well. You know what I hate even worst is someone who always wants gifts, but don’t ever think to give you one in return. I guess there’s a name for that – gold digging cheapskate!

The ultimate no-no is any man wanting to have sex without using a condom. 8 5

10 M

U N TI DI N E S S Rounding off the top 10 list is an “untidy man.” Everyone chimed in on this one. They said hell no to the untidy good-looking man! This seems to be a common thing for men in general. You have a lot of guys out there who love looking good, but are messy as hell. They don’t keep their pads clean at all. Their cars are cleaner than where they live. And women, shame on you! How can you date a guy, go to his house and see that mess and still sleep with him. I had a roommate years back; good looking guy, who had the same personality. Men, clean-up where you home! USLMAG.COM | USL MAGAZINE

LIFESTYLE|FITNESS M A G A Z I NE

GET FIT With JD JACOME How important is health, fitness, eating right and looking good? Eating healthy and maintaining my health is very important to me. About 15 years ago I started working out. At that time, I just wanted to look and feel better about myself. So, I found a gym and started exercising. It was really hard at first. And I didn’t see the results right away so I wanted to quit. But I kept going until finally I decided that me having the body I want is a decision I have to take seriously. It’s not easy. It’s work; a lot of work. This isn’t a hobby for me, it’s my lifestyle. I love feeling good about myself and the progress I’ve made. I love sharing the things I’ve learned with people that are just starting out. I know what feeling is and I love when I can do something to help others feel better about themselves. What is your daily workout regiment? My daily workout regimen consist of 45 minutes to 2 hours depending of the muscle group I will workout. I usually do a 15 minute warm-up followed by short but intense routines and I workout my abs while resting between sets. I repeat this 6 times per week. To compliment my workouts, I try to eat everyday; 5-6 complete meals based on the intensity, activity and calories I plan to burn that day. Photos By Kurt T. Jones | KuJoPix KuJoPix@gmail.com

WORK-OUT TIPS

M A G A Z I NE

Any tips you care to share about working out? I know how difficult it can seem at the beginning in seeing the results of ones labor. The changes are small, but they come as long as you have consistency and moderation. First thing to understand is that everyone’s body is different and you have to find excercises that you enjoy doing. If you like to ride your bike; bike more. If you like to swim; start swimming regularly. It’s good to set realistic goals rather than drastic changes. Small goals will keep you from getting discouraged and help keep you motivated. I always suggest that beginners should start making small changes in their diet and write down a dietary plan and a workout schedule. Put it on your calendar and cross off the days that you stayed on track. It very quickly becomes a reminder of what the goal is and how dedicated you’ve been in achieving it. Focusing on the calendar and not the mirror will make your change more obtainable and create the state of mind you want about fitness.

BEST FEATURES

Im confident but nice. Im intelligent and well educated, mature and respectful. I think my best features are my eyes, legs and glutes. I’m very proud of my legs. For some reason it’s the hardest muscle group for men to workout. I saw changes slow but with consistency and hard work they just took off.

WHAT’S NEXT

With modeling Im looking into more editorial and fitness projects as well as fine arts. Im working on a calendar and a website, as well. However, my main focus for the past few years has been marketing and advertising various products, businesses and services. I’ve built ads and campaigns for several businesses when I was living in Los Angeles. And I’m always grateful for new opportunities. If people want to reach me professionally, they can email me at jd_jl@live.com
