JUNE 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE REPORT The Eastern Pennsylvania conference of the United Methodist Church held our 2015 Annual Conference at the Philadelphia Expo Center on May 14-16. While there were issues discussed that were at times contentious and votes taken that left people on both sides disappointed, I thought it was generally a positive time. Even as emotional issues were debated, the mood in the room was less adversarial than in past years. As Bishop Johnson requested, delegates displayed respect and compassion for one another and maintained an attitude of Holy Conferencing. Next year the United Methodist Church will hold our Annual Conference (meets every four years) and the EPA will also be part of the Northeast Jurisdictional conference (this group that includes the New England and Mid-Atlantic states also meets every four years). We elected lay and clergy delegates for each of these conferences, a long process that was not completed until Saturday night -the list of those elected can be found at the conference website. As usual, there were numerous resolutions to address. You can see me or Win Hall for a full report regarding the resolutions; but I do want to speak about a couple of them which you may hear about: ◊-We dealt with The Wesley Church which is located south of Quarryville in Lancaster County. They are a growing church which recently acquired land and built a large new church building. Regrettably, this congregation has voted to leave the United Methodist Church. As you can imagine, this is very difficult to deal with but there is a process for this eventuality in the Book of Discipline. To make it brief, church property is owned by the Conference and held in trust by local churches. Therefore, in the unusual circumstance of a congregation leaving the denomination their church building remains with the conference. However, in the case of Wesley, there is a 4 million dollar mortgage on their building that the Conference Trustees do not wish to assume. So they will be allowed to keep the building but will instead pay a sum of money to the EPA Conference- this sum will be negotiated but will include their connectional ministries obligation, their pledge to the Fulfilling our Covenant campaign, plus additional funds. ◊-We voted on several resolutions that dealt with same-sex marriage and the wording of the Book of Discipline in regards to this issue. While any changes to the Book of Discipline can only take place at a General Conference, we discussed making a recommendation to that body when they meet next year. The short story is that these resolutions were all defeated as we voted not to recommend any changes to the current wording. ◊-In addition to the above paragraph, we also passed a resolution calling for those clergy who “feel they can no longer abide by our common covenant to withdraw themselves from our connection,

2 rather than continue to cause damage to our ministry through ongoing judicial proceedings.” Let me stress again that while there was not total agreement in the room, there was respect and a general absence of animosity. While the business and voting can become tedious at times, I have come to really enjoy the worship services and this year was no exception as we focused on stewardship. (The keynote speaker had several good ideas that Win or I will bring to Finance meetings). There was also good news regarding the Imagine No Malaria Ministry -- we are very close to our goal of raising 75 million dollars and are seeing tangible results with our efforts. It was exciting as well to hear about the work of UMC Methodist in the Congo and the positive effects of the Disaster Relief Teams -- ministries supported by our Connectional Giving. I always leave Annual Conference with ministry ideas -- perhaps providing space in the church for a computer (and hopefully a tutor) for seniors who want to learn to take greater advantage of the internet, maybe there are folks in the church who would be interested in a dance ministry (although you might not want the Pastor to lead such a ministry), maybe expanding the use of our kitchen……to name a few possibilities. I hope this gives you a good idea of what took place at Annual Conference -- I will be happy to discuss any questions you have. Thank you for your prayers, Pastor Ray.

Special

Offering – Sunday, June 21, 2015 Peace with Justice Sunday is one of the six “special offerings” designated by the United Methodist Church. You will see in your offering packet two envelopes for Sunday, June 21st. The envelope with the GREEN border is for

the special offering “Peace with Justice Sunday” designated by the United Methodist Church. Any money received in the GREEN envelope is sent directly to Conference in support of this special offering and does not help to support our local church. We encourage you to support the special giving opportunities of the United Methodist Church. However, we ask that you be careful not to confuse the colored bordered envelopes with your normal weekly offering envelopes to our church. Because of the “Peace with Justice Sunday” special offering, the people of The United Methodist Church are able to make a difference together by sowing seeds—and yielding fruit!—of peace.

Sign to be Refurbished The Trustees have selected Eckerts Signs to refurbish the Church's sign. Generally, this will involve cutting the existing sign face into two pieces. The upper part, with the text "New Holland United Methodist Church", will be reused and the lower part (where the changeable text appears) will be new. There will be a metal dividing strip between the two pieces. There will still be five lines of text with 3”

6 letters. A new set of 300 pieces is included. The plastic part of the vandal cover will be replaced (stainless steel frame will be reused). An improved means of holding the vandal cover in the up position is included. The cabinet will be repainted and raised about nine inches to make it a little more user friendly. The tubes and ballasts which were replaced last year will be reused. The brick pillars will be retained as is. The UM logo on top of the sign will be cleaned but otherwise will be unchanged. When the work begins, Eckerts will take the sign to their shop. It is expected to be gone for about two weeks. The total cost for this project is $2873. The Administrative Council felt that the Memorial Funds (Tryson/ Frybarger/ Heal) would be appropriate for this project. It will cover about one half. The remaining funds will come from designated gifts or the general fund. As a matter of interest, we did get quotes for an electronic sign. They ranged from $22,000 to $32,000. This would have been a very nice sign but maybe not the best use of our funds at this time.

PLEASE HELP THE NEW HOLLAND CROP WALK! My name is Roy. I have been involved with then New Holland Crop Walk since 1978. That year our Son Craig had his Company FIRECON sponsor a back yard picnic and 6

WGAL came to the New Holland Park to collected $2,830. Our best year so far has been $36,800. Which was 1995. I was 47 the year I started, now I’m 84 and it is time we really get this program into gear. For a lot of years I have had the feeling that we could reach $100,000. With your help this could be that year. One very important thing for you to remember is that when you decide to make a donation remember that you are not making a donation to Roy’s Crop Walk. Your donation, whatever the size, is going to the woman that walks miles each day for fresh water. Your donation is going to the people that get help learning how to grow their own food to avoid starvation. Church World Service who is the sponsor of CROP has a web site and you can go there and check it out. www.cwglobal.org Here is my site for you to go to: http://app.getresponse.com/click.html? x=a62b&lc=OgYwL&mc=lV&s=QhLpGj&u= SCz4&y=F& Please give prayerful thought to your decision. If 100,000 folks would donate just $1.00 we would reach our goal. Remember again, whatever donation you decide to give it is for the folks in this country, around the world and in fact I’m sure in your own back yard. Twenty-five (25%) percent of what we collect goes to our local food banks. That is evidence that the local area is being supported too. When you say your prayers and give thanks for the blessings we enjoy here in America ask God to guide you in making a decision to support our efforts. We are blessed and we need to do our best to show our appreciation for what God is doing for us by sharing with others.

God bless you and your family, and God bless the gift that you share with us. Roy C. Schroll, Jr. 717 569 7918 rcschroll@yahoo.com
