The Village Changemakers

Page 1

One day in a village somewhere...

What can you tell me about India?

And this village?

Ding‌ Ding‌

Skyscrapers, the Ganges, elephants, computers, the Taj Mahal!

No doctors, rubbish, lovely fruit, no electricity, cows!

Hmm, lots of things are missing...

Time to play!

Look what I’ve found!

What can we do about it?

Doctors, clean water, vegetables...

Interesting...

Water, health, hygiene, medicine... it’s all possible...

We can fix things! Let’s learn more and ask others.

Let’s see what we can fix.

People get sick from it.

What’s that smell?

Cows and people together!

Water should be clear to see, smell and taste for it to be healthy to drink.

Yuck!

This is disgusting!

It is everywhere. And flies too!

No time to waste‌

What can we do about this?

What happens in big cities, Dada ji?

Let’s ask Dada ji.

People use latrines.

There are separate places for washing too. It is cleaner that way.

I’m hungry!

Come to my house for some lunch.

We only have rice and fruit in this village... We don’t have chicken, or many vegetables.

What can we do about it?

Let’s fix some things…

I’ll come with you Anita.

Hurry, let’s get to it.

I’ll use the extra wood to make a lid for the well.

Much better!

This should help!

Bang, bang…

What… What’s all this about?

Take that, Sonu!

Ouch!

Want to play, Ganesh?

I’m planting trees...

PLAIN INK - When Change Reads Like a Book At Plain Ink we want to fuel a better story. Working at the place where education, inspiration and action meet, we ignite imaginations to create a new narrative for the world; one in which we all have a chance to thrive, wherever we are. Compelled by the transformative potential of storytelling, we harness the power of books, multi-media and imagery to spark change. Through the stories that we tell, we help people gain new skills, increase literacy levels and engage communities around the world in finding their own solutions. At Plain Ink we are plotting a way out of poverty. Whether in India, Afghanistan or Italy we want education to lead the way in helping people to fill their bellies with the food they need, their minds with innovative ideas for action and their hearts with the courage to believe in change. In our book, we want a happy ending. At Plain Ink, we believe our stories will help to take us there.

OUR COMICS Imagery, stories and colour bring change to life. Comics are a simple, effective and engaging way to reach out and share knowledge with people with little or no literacy skills, be they children or adults. Our comics aim at helping people gain news skills to improve their village, and engage children and communities in finding their own solutions to local problems. They have a unique layout presenting both, simple texts in Hindi and English as well as graphic-only messages, all on the same page. In doing so, they encourage basic literacy while also providing quick, easy to understand messages in areas such as public health, food security or natural disasters preparedness. Locally produced, they contribute to the creative economy of the areas where Plain Ink works.
