Dear Class of 2023,
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you and offer some reflection on how far you have come in four years. We have had some ups and downs and you endured the strangest of conditions starting your freshman year with the early Spring Break of 2020 that everyone thought might just be a few extra days. In reality, it became a pandemic that completely altered how we operate.
When you came back for your sophomore year, it was with a great deal of uncertainty and everything felt surreal. You lived through that year of quarantines, masks, restrictions, modified schedules, and altered extracurricular activities without knowing when it would end.
Last year, you returned hoping things could finally get back to normal, only to be surprised by how different everything still was and how many times you had to pivot and readjust . . . but you did it and you made it to your senior year. It hasn’t been perfect and it hasn’t been easy, but if there is one thing that united you as a class, it was the desire to make this year be your best year, and you set the example for everyone in the school.
I’m so proud of the way you came together and showed leadership for the rest of the student body. You lived through a high school experience that was unprecedented, and you are paving the way for what it means to be successful in a post-pandemic world. You are trendsetters, pioneers, and explorers who will help all who follow you. Your leadership at GlenOak is just the start of what you will do. I saw you support each other, comfort each other, and cheer each other on. I saw you push yourself academically and athletically. I saw you take risks. I saw you succeed, and I saw you fail. I saw you persevere, and I saw you develop a strength of character that will serve you in any situation you find yourself in. My parting wish is that you will take these experiences at GlenOak and use them to soar to even greater heights.
YOU are the Class of 2023 and you will ALWAYS be an Eagle!
I am so very proud of you and wish you all the best. Congratulations!
Gayle Kimbrough Principal GlenOak High School
Dear Class of 2023,
Congratulations, you made it. Graduation is the first major milestone in your life. A whole new journey awaits you. It has truly been my pleasure to serve you as the Deputy Principal of GlenOak High School. Graduation is a celebration of all your successes, hard work, grit, and your determination in the pursuit of excellence. Graduation also commemorates the completion of time with us at Plain Local. You will be missed, as you have been an exceptional senior class.
Class of 2023, you will travel in many directions. Some of you will enter the workforce, others will serve our great country in the armed forces, and many of you will attend college. Whichever path you select, I am certain that the education at GlenOak High School has prepared you for your next step. During hard times and times of joy, remember to lean on the core values that have been instilled in you by GlenOak’s remarkable faculty: Integrity, Equality, Responsibility, Compassion and Respect.
I am excited for all your next steps in life. Just as you made your mark in the halls of GlenOak, I know that each and every one of you will make a mark on this world. As your high school career comes to a close and your future door opens, please remember these core values and always try to be gracious in victory, humble in defeat and always be ready to help your neighbor. Continue to Soar High as you are all GlenOak Eagles. Welcome to the Plain Local Alumni Club.
Sincerely,
Brett Niarchos Deputy Principal GlenOak High School

Roman Shaheen
Our theme for the 2022-2023 school year was “What’s Your Why?” Your “Why” is a statement of purpose that describes why you do the work you do and why you live the lifestyle you do. It is your calling. It is your conviction. It is your mission statement. It is a vision of your life’s work. All of this together makes up your personal “WHY.”
“My why has always been to improve myself and my community through working hard, and being involved with as many things within our community as I could be.”
“My why is making my family proud and seeing how much I can challenge myself.”
“My why is the people around me whether it be my friends or family that are always encouraging me to be the best person I can be.”
“The reason why I work as hard as I do is because I not only want to have people look up to me, but also respect me and have a inspiration to reach for their dreams…Also because I don’t want my parents to kill me.”
“What’s my why is such a good question. My why is being able to inspire the underclassmen. They’re the ones that are gonna be keeping the good and happy spirit alive within the school. They’re gonna be the next seniors and hopefully they’re gonna be able to inspire and spread knowledge to their underclassmen just as I did.”
“My why is to help people live their lives. Everyone in this school has been through so much, everyone has their own baggage and that can be the hardest thing in a lot of people’s lives, but being able to use it as a means to make something of yourself and live your life to the fullest no matter what you’re doing is so important. I’m proud of myself for making it to graduation and I’m going to continue to push harder just like everyone else around me because I don’t want to fall short of the things I’m capable of accomplishing.”
