Welcome Back! The entire team in Plain Local is looking forward to another great school year. We have been preparing and planning this summer to deliver the best education in Stark County. This edition is full of news and updates for the new year. I hope you will take time to review and contact any building with questions or concerns. Our goal is to have a smooth and enjoyable opening to the year so we are here to serve you and your family as you prepare for the 2019-2020 school year. I am excited to introduce new technology this year to assist each family with transportation. You will read inside how to access your child’s pick up and drop off time instantly starting this year. This technology will update daily so your family has the most accurate bussing information. I encourage all families to utilize this technology as it will be timely and relevant information for all! In addition, I am extremely proud to report what was accomplished through strategic planning. You will find that information inside along with an announcement for community input this fall as we begin planning for the next 3-5 years. I would like to thank the entire staff across the district for their dedication and hard work. They have accomplished many things over the past few years, and I am honored to work with them each day. Thank You! Finally, recent events in Dayton and Texas have created a very tense environment for everyone. Students will be coming back to school this fall with many thoughts and emotions after these events. I am asking everyone for additional patience and compassion as we start another school year. The start of school is stressful, and I urge everyone to take a breath and slow down this fall. Our goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment this fall to all students and families. We want to ensure students they feel safe and have a great experience to start this school year. Together, we can accomplish this goal. Thank you for your continued support of the Plain Local School District. I am honored to serve you and look forward to an amazing year. Go Eagles!!
Brent May, Superintendent
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SUBMITTED A STORY OF SOMEONE WHO IS A CHAMPION IN YOUR EYES. STAY TUNED ON SOCIAL MEDIA AS WE SHARE MORE THROUGHOUT THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR! “I would like to nominate Mrs. Teaford at Warstler. She is so wonderful to the kids. She is always friendly and acknowledges parents when they are volunteering. She has always communicated with me in regards to my daughter’s learning and always took my concerns seriously. I have been with Plain Local a long time and she is one of the absolute best teachers I have dealt with. She is definitely a champion!” – Vanessa Williams “Señora Cerrezuela has always pushed me to be my best self this school year. She constantly encouraged all of her kids and would never let anyone believe that they weren’t good enough. She would let me come in during her planning periods and help me study for tests or look over my Spanish papers. Señora Cerrezuela saw the best in not just me but all of her students. She truly was a champion this year and every other year.” – Hailey Plues “Mr. Roberts has been a teacher who has great communication with parents, who considers his students’ needs, and who has been responsive and supportive to students’ needs. Great job Mr. Roberts for putting students first!” – Angela Peeler “Gill Kinsinger has been a champion for Taft this year! She has helped with countless items supporting the staff and students at Taft. She always says ‘yes!’ to helping and does it with a smile no matter what it is. Everything Gill does is to a high standard and every detail is to perfection. She puts in hours of time outside of school to make sure our events run smoothly. Gill has become Taft’s official event planner and audiovisual extraordinaire. We are so thankful to have Gill’s positive energy and commitment to Taft’s excellence!” – Kortney Milford
“Melissa Kohan is the secretary of GlenOak’s choir. Melissa also organized all of the meals to feed all of the choir kids during May Show for all three nights of rehearsals. She worked tirelessly to receive donations, shop and prepare 900-plus meals. Melissa is always willing to help and go that extra mile!” – Carolyn Gemma
“Honestly, Mr. Keoshian has been there for me since day one of 6th grade. He was there for me, every time when I rushed in to get a counselor form, and he would ask if I was OK, which was amazing. He was really humorous as well, and very kindhearted. He’s like a father figure to me during school, and I thank him for that. Mr. Keoshian, if you’re reading this, thank you for being a father figure to me and staying with me since grade 6. When I become a graduate, all my appreciation goes to you. Thank you!” – Aryanna Yan “Mr. Atkins is such a wonderful asset to Oakwood Middle School. This was my child’s first year at Plain Local Schools. We were so nervous about her starting a new school. There are so many obstacles and challenges for these preteens, especially when you transfer from a very small school to a big school where the student body is three times larger. We didn’t know what to expect. It was a tough year for my daughter with 7th grade drama and falling behind on her grades. Mr. Atkins really looked out for her; he was always someone she could turn to with peer issues and academic issues. I am forever grateful for his guidance to help these children get through the woes of middle school.” – Jennifer Kungle

SUMMER SCHOOL UPDATE
This June, GlenOak High School welcomed more than 300 students as a part of our Summer Academic Camp for students entering grades K-4. This year’s program was led by Avondale teacher Jessica Lauer. Kindergarten students participated in Jumpstart to Kindergarten, a program that provided an opportunity for students to become familiar with school routines, engage in fun learning activities and participate in the Plain Township Safety City program. We also had the privilege of partnering with the Stark District County Library where students received a library card and took part in weekly activities and interactive reading. On behalf of the summer school program and Plain Local Schools, we would like to thank our families and community for making this summer an invaluable experience for our students!

POSITIVE CHANGES AT AVONDALE
The 2018-19 school year brought many positive changes for Avondale students in the area of play and physical fitness. After the installation of new playground equipment last fall, courtesy of the PTO, Avondale continued to be on the receiving end of generous donations. Last spring, Plain Local Schools Athletics Department donated a soccer goal for students to use during recess and for the community to use when visiting our playground after hours. Additionally, the playground basketball hoops were replaced through a generous donation from an Avondale family. Their generosity didn’t stop there, however. Upon the recommendation of the physical education teacher, Mr. Kent Hamilton, the family purchased and donated a traverse rock wall, which was installed in the gym this summer. Mr. Hamilton is excited to use this newly added equipment to meet his physical education goals, while bringing a sense of fun and adventure to his classes this year!
NEW AVONDALE STAFF Avondale Elementary officially welcomes Mrs. Abby Messner to its team! Mrs. Messner spent last school year as a long-term substitute teacher in our 3/4 blended class. After jumping in headfirst and learning the ropes last year, Mrs. Messner is looking forward to taking the reigns as the full-time teacher in this class. Aside from being a proud Plain parent, Mrs. Messner brings a variety of work and life experiences that will continue to support the excellent work of the Avondale staff for our students.
TAFT AND BARR FIRST-GRADERS ARE MAKING WAVES! Taft Elementary and Barr Elementary are proud to partner with the North Canton YMCA to pilot Swim Safety courses with their first-grade students. Swimming lessons open up a world of excitement for kids and provide a platform to build the necessary skills of being in water. The first-grade students will participate in a once a week, eight-week course. Students will feel great about their success during each 45-minute lesson with a professional instructor who will teach swimming and safety skills, broken down into achievable chunks. Students will end the session knowing the realities of being in the water, self-rescue skills, fundamental swimming skills and how to have fun in the pool!
Thanks to a partnership with the North Canton YMCA, Taft and Barr first-grade students will work on their swimming skills this fall!
NEW TAFT STAFF
Driver’s Ed Instructor
Taft Elementary is excited to welcome Emily Malinsky! She will serve as the office clerk. Malinsky should be a familiar face to families since she has been serving as a volunteer at Taft and as the president of the PTO.

GLENOAK ALUMNI CARRIES ON WATER WALK LEGACY
In May, Sarah Conley (a GlenOak senior and daughter of Frazer 2nd-grade teacher, Beth Ann Conley) spoke to Frazer students about the Water Walk project. This project was started in 2012 in order to raise awareness of the need for clean drinking water in Africa. When the original Water Walk leadership team graduated in 2017, Sarah was asked to take over the project. Her goal was to raise enough money to fund a borehole (a deep water well) in Malawi, Africa. Through district and community events and projects, the team met its goal this spring. In June, the Conley family was part of a team of eight that traveled to Malawi for two weeks. During the two-week visit, the team visited many villages and was privileged to lead marriage seminars and children’s activities. The highlight of the trip was visiting the borehole that was funded by the Water Walk and dedicating it in the name of Plain Local Schools. The well will serve a village of 1,200 people and will impact as many as 3,000 villagers by providing clean water. If you would like more information or would like to contribute to the ongoing Water Walk project, please visit www.cantonwaterwalk. com or email Sarah Conley at sarah@cantonwaterwalk.com.
NEW FRAZER STAFF Mrs. Jamie Morales, formerly Miss Jamie Lenardos, will be joining the 2nd-grade team at Frazer Elementary during the upcoming school year. Mrs. Morales taught 2nd grade at Middlebranch Elementary for the past two years and served as Title Tutor prior to that. She’ll be a great addition to the Frazer Staff!

MIDDLEBRANCH LOOKS TO FIND “EVERY CHILD A CHAMPION!”
“Every child deserves a champion!” This is a quote from educator Rita Pierson and is often a call to teachers around the country. This year, it will be the focus for Middlebranch Elementary as they look to the new year and a new chapter in its family history. Middlebranch is proud to welcome several new faces to our staff and the impact they will have on our students’ learning and lives. However, it goes beyond the work in the classroom to champion our students. We must help focus them into the purpose they have to succeed. There are a couple of programs that will help empower our students and bring out the champion in each of them. The “Guys With Ties” is entering its fourth year and has spread throughout the Plain Local to all six elementary schools. Each year, the program helps teach essential skills and empowerment to the boys in 3rd grade. Mr. Hamilton will be looking to continue the opportunities this year at Middlebranch. The “Fierce Females” program was started last year at Frazer Elementary and will now branch out to Middlebranch. The program’s design is to develop the vision and achievement of future goals by empowering 4th-grade girls. Mrs. Michael, Mrs. Tupta and Mrs. Gidcumb will take the lead as we establish this program during the 2019-2020 school year. Every child deserves a champion, but that doesn’t mean the champion is only in the form of a staff member. School volunteers also have the power to help staff members encourage students to become their absolute best. If you are interested in being a part of the Middlebranch volunteers to champion our students, please reach out Mr. Easterling at Middlebranch Elementary to find out what you can do. Together, we can make this focus a reality and once again, show all of the champions that are a part of Middlebranch Elementary!
WARSTLER ELEMENTARY IS GETTING RAZ-ZED ABOUT READING Warstler Elementary has utilized a reading reinforcement program called Accelerated Reading, also known as AR. With this program, there are great benefits that recognize students who met comprehension and point goals as they read books and took quizzes to measure their comprehension. Warstler Elementary will be moving away from AR to a new, highly recommended reading support program called RAZ-Kids. It is an extension of a reading support resource that has been used for a number of years, Reading A-Z. If you’d like a sneak peek at the new program, you can go to www. raz-kids.com. You will be able to see how much reading enrichment and support that this program has to offer our students!

OAKWOOD CROSS COUNTRY TEAM WORKS THROUGH THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
Oakwood Cross Country has been working through the heat and “dog days of summer” to prepare for a successful fall season. The team meets in the early morning and works together to improve their stamina with distance running. Through the summer months, they develop relationships to build strong teamwork. Coaches Scott Laughman and Suzi Lantz invited the team to participate in summer community runs. We celebrate the students that sacrificed hours of their summer days to train their minds and bodies! OAKWOOD IS BENEFICIARY OF EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT
GlenOak senior Nick Santavicca completed his Eagle Scout project this summer, serving the students of Oakwood Middle School. Nick approached Oakwood principal, Mrs. McNeal, in the spring to investigate any needs Oakwood students may have. They decided upon a plan to organize the Oakwood Lost and Found by making it portable and easy for students to see items. Nick created a design for a two-sided, portable lost and found caddie that is inclusive of hangers, shelves and bins. Once the design was approved, Nick began construction with a team of helpers. The green and gold decorated lost and found caddie is complete and delivered to Oakwood. The school is appreciative and excited to have an organized place that is neat and aesthetic for students to drop off or seek misplaced items. Nick’s service to Oakwood Middle School is valued, and he has proven to be a true Eagle champion in scouting, schooling and service!

GLENOAK HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING UPDATES
GlenOak High School has been a busy place this summer. There have been athletic camps, Y-Care, the summer feeding program, as well as enrichment, arts and academic summer camps going on every day. Additionally, the GlenOak custodians have been hard at work cleaning, painting, rearranging and getting our building in tip-top shape. The most noticeable change to GlenOak is the Counseling Center, housed in the center of the building in the Upper C wing. The Freshman Academy counseling team will stay in the Freshman Wing, but all counselors for students in grades 10-12 will now be accessible in one place. Stop by to say hello and check out their new digs!

WRESTLING
More than 40 youth to middle school students attended the wrestling summer camp hosted by the GlenOak wrestling team. High school athletes mentored the young wrestlers for a three-day camp. GlenOak Head Coach Michael Hynd shared, “It was a great experience to bring all three levels together as a family. We had the opportunity to raise enough money to purchase a wrestling record board, which will be displayed outside of the room.”
VOLLEYBALL
The GlenOak Youth Volleyball Camp had another successful year. There were more 100 participants from grades 1-8. During the camp, the high school coaches, players and middle school coaches worked on the basic fundamentals of volleyball. Head Coach Deb Pickering shared, “The youth did a great job and worked very hard and they had a lot of fun too! We are excited about the future of GlenOak Volleyball!”
LACROSSE
GlenOak Youth Lacrosse Camp was a great success with about 40 total campers, from beginners to more advanced. The instruction was done by high school coaching staff along with many high school players, keeping it to around a 3:1 ratio of staff to camper, so there was a lot of one-on-one instruction. Even the rain did not stop us when we went inside for some individual wall-ball instruction, some shooting instruction, and then, of course, some lacrosse dodgeball with tennis balls for some of the older campers. GlenOak Head Coach Shane Hawthorne shared, “This was a great start to getting new players out to learn more about the game of lacrosse. Anyone interested in seeking more playing time, we will have open nets for boys and girls in September and October every Sunday. Contact me at 330-280-3270 or hawthornes@plainlocal.org for more information.”
GLENOAK LACROSSE FALL BALL OPEN NETS
Open Nets will be held at Bob Comings Stadium every Sunday in September and October from 2:30-5:30 p.m. This is open to any seasoned lacrosse players. New lacrosse players are welcome to come learn from 2:30-3 p.m. There is no cost and no registration required, open to boys and girls from 4th-12th grade. We hope to see you there!

Beanies: During our research on both Glenwood High School and Middlebranch High School, we discovered that there were beanies for the freshman students. We have only seen one photo in the Glenwood Yearbook and the Middlebranch Yearbooks just mention that beanies exist. As it turns out, there were beanies for other Plain Township schools as well. We discovered one existed for Edgefield and have acquried one. Now we are on the hunt. We have three questions: 1) Which schools had beanies? 2) We are looking for a least a photo of the school beanies for the archives and ideally looking for one (or more) of those to be donated. 3)What was the significance of the beanie and do you have a story associated with a beanie you can share? Mascots: You may not remember or realize that at one time, the Plain Local schools each had their own mascot and school colors. We are looking for information to help fill in the gaps. Here is what we know: Middlebranch High School – Diamond, Black and Red; Glenwood High School – Eagle, Red and Blue; Oakwood High School – Raider, Green and Gold; GlenOak High School – Eagle, Green and Gold; Taft Junior High School – Senators, Red and White; Middlebranch Junior High – same as Middlebranch High School; Frazer Elementary – Falcon, Red and White; Edgefield – ?, Maroon and Gold; Avondale – Cougars, ?; Warstler – Wolves, ?; Plain Center - ?; Pleasant View- ?; Barr - ?; Day - ?. So if you can fill in the missing information that is great. If you have a copy of the logo that you can scan and send us, even better. If you have something that has the logo on it and you want to donate the item, that will be terrific. We will be adding this information to the school profiles we are delvoping for our website. Newspapers: We are continuing our work with the GlenOak Journalism program to preserve past issues of Middlebranch, Glenwood, Oakwood and GlenOak Newspapers. Our project is off to a good start and we have a good base of newspapers, but not all of them. We are always on the lookout for copies to add to the collection whether that be a copy or an orginial. It our goal to have a complete set for at least Glenwood, Oakwood and GlenOak. We hope to find Middlebranch High School newspapers too. Oakwood High School is currently underrepresented in the collection. So if you know anyone who was a former editor for any of the papers or anyone else who might want to share or donate copies, please let us know. These newspapers are very valuable when we are doing research on a school. Help us preserve the history of Plain Township. We are “Educating Plain Township” about “Plain History”. CHILD & ADOLESCENT BEHAVIOR HEALTH BY KIM CERNANSKY, LISW-S SCHOOL-BASED CLINICIAN PROGRAM MANAGER Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health (C&A) has been in existence for 44 years. C&A is a full-service, trauma-informed mental health organization specializing in the emotional and behavioral needs of children, adolescents, young adults and their families all around Stark County. C&A has always serviced the Plain Local community. Each year, we have developed a closer collaboration and have strengthened our relationship within Plain Local Schools. Currently, we have a mental health therapist stationed at each school within the district. In collaboration with Stark MHAR, our mental health therapists provide consultation services to children identified by staff in need of services. Consultation services include behavioral health screening and referral, crisis intervention, student social/emotional skill development, parent/guardian engagement/education, community linkage and referrals, participating in CARE team meetings, and staff education and training. School-based services are becoming a more viable option for clients and families. Due to the increase in mental health needs amongst children and adolescents, therapeutic services in the schools has many advantages. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2017, suicide was the second-leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34 years old. Recently, here in Stark County, we experienced a suicide contagion. C&A therapists have provided crucial support and resources to not only children and their families but also to staff in their schools. One of the numerous benefits to having a therapist in the school building is that he or she is there in the moment, especially when a crisis occurs. Providers are there to intervene immediately. C&A providers are trained to assess the situation and provide evidence-based treatment. The relationships we have built in Plain Local Schools have allowed us the opportunity to assist children and their needs as they arise throughout their school day. Good mental health is critical to children’s success in school and life. According to the National Association of School Psychologists, research demonstrates that students who receive social-emotional and mental health support achieve better academically. School climate, classroom behavior, on-task learning and students’ sense of connectedness and well-being all improve as well. Participation in the school Care Team meetings is another advantage to being in the schools. Care Team is a collaboration of educators, law enforcement officials and our C&A providers. The Care Team works with students and their parents to address the barriers that influence academic performance, such as physical health, substance abuse, physical abuse, housing, nutrition and poverty. These monthly to bimonthly meetings provide the opportunity for referrals to be made for services at C&A if needed. C&A therapists provide a wealth of knowledge during this time. Therapists can suggest interventions to utilize as well as provide education to staff about mental health. Therapists can assist in creating and developing behavior plans to increase a student’s success in class. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one in five children and adolescents experience a mental health problem during their school years. Examples include stress, anxiety, bullying, family problems, depression, a learning disability, and alcohol and substance abuse. As mentioned above, serious mental health problems, such as self-injurious behaviors and suicide, are on the rise, particularly among youth. It is evident, having a C&A provider accessible during the school day is advantageous. Schools are an ideal place to provide mental health services to children and youth. With children spending at least six hours a day in school, it’s the perfect place for prevention, intervention, positive development and regular communication between the school and families. Being at the school increases accessibility to services. Transportation can, at times, be an obstacle for families. A school-based provider can eliminate that barrier. Though school-based services are accessible to most children and adolescents, it does not always meet the needs of the client and family. For example, clients that have experienced trauma may not feel comfortable processing these events during the school day. If this is the case, C&A has office-based services as well. In the early fall of 2018, C&A and Plain Local Schools’ relationship grew even stronger. C&A is now located on the GlenOak Campus to afford greater convenience to the residents of the Plain Local Community. To reach our Plain Community office, please call 234-207-0899. The Plain office hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
