I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to the 2017-2018 school year. Summer really went by quickly, but we are excited for yet another great school year. Much work has been done across the district to ensure that your child receives the best education in Stark County. We are proud of what has been accomplished, and look forward to a future with endless possibilities. This edition is filled with information about the start of the school year. As you review, if there are questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to call. Our goal is to provide the best service to you and your family since you have chosen to attend the Plain Local School District. As we begin a new school year, I would like to draw your attention to our website at plainlocal.org. As we enter year 2 in our strategic planning process there are multiple updates and information for our community. A lot has been accomplished to continue the rich tradition and culture in the Plain Local School District. My goal is to continue to move the district forward and communicate our work to the entire community. I feel fortunate to lead this amazing district and I appreciate your continued support. Lastly, I would like to invite you to join us Monday, August 21, 2017 at 8:15 a.m. at the GlenOak High School Theatre for the Plain Local School District’s Annual Convocation. We are planning an exciting event that we hope will serve as a catalyst for an outstanding and innovative 2017-2018 school year. Throughout the morning, we will introduce the new members of our teaching team, celebrate the start of the school year, hear from a Plain Local Alumnus and learn about the many excellent opportunities available to students, staff and community members in Plain Local. We are going to have a great year! I look forward to seeing smiling faces and children filled with hope and excitement over the next few weeks across the district. Go Eagles!

If you drive down Schneider Street before school starts you will notice some much needed improvements to GlenOak High School, Oakwood Middle School and Warstler Elementary. All three buildings received updated asphalt projects this summer to get them ready for a new year. GlenOak High School widened the drop off lane at the front of the building. This will allow for a smoother pick up and drop off process before and after school. The parking lot at Oakwood Middle School has been repaved and painted and is ready for a new year. Lastly Warstler Elementary received updated sidewalks and parking lot, ensuring a safe start of the school year! The GlenOak High School Stadium is also currently

under construction with the addition of new locker rooms for the fall and enhancements to the softball complex. This project is

largely possible due to the overwhelming support of community partners and the Golden Eagle Athletic Association Auction last April.

Plain Local Summer School Program An Olympic Success

We had the privilege of providing an Olympic themed summer school session for our elementary and intermediate students during the month of June hosted at GlenOak High School. Our superb team of teachers differentiated their instruction to the individual students in order to encourage growth in their struggling areas of content. In addition to the academic programming, the students were offered transportation and breakfast and lunch each day. We partnered with the Stark County District Library to set up weekly library visits, including a read aloud, hands-on activities, and an opportunity to sign up for a library card. We also set up multiple visits from a mobile dentist through the Smile program, allowing students to receive free dental care. The students had the exciting opportunity to meet an inspiring Olympic athlete, US Boomerang Champion and

Motivational Speaker, Gary Broadbent. He presented his inspiring story of Olympic achievement and gifted the students with a presentation of his boomerang abilities! On the last day, the students participated in Olympic themed field day activities

and a closing ceremony, in which students were recognized for honorable traits including sportsmanship, team player, stamina, and perfect attendance. Thank you again to our community for helping to make summer school a great success!

Frazer Plans To Focus On Leadership Skills As we prepare to begin a new school year at Frazer Elementary, we will have the focus of leadership with our students this year. It is a topic that can be infused in all the classrooms from kindergarten to fourth grade. Building upon the resiliency and perseverance lessons from last year and the focus on essentials in all grades, leadership will be a quality that can promote self-confidence in students as they tackle the lessons to be learned in their academics. Along with the discussion about what is leadership, students will continue to have opportunities to be leaders in the building. We will have our 4th grade Kid-Teacher Organization (KTO) again starting in the second grading period, that will help promote Frazer school spirit and support different causes in our Plain Local community. Some students will also be able to take leadership roles from leading announcements, some assemblies and in the cafeteria. Students will also receive stickers when they are “Caught Being a Frazer Leader!” We will draw from

sticker recipients for prizes to reinforce our push for leadership skills amongst our students. We will again partner with the YMCA’s “Character Champions” program and homerooms will select students based upon several character traits including leadership. Leadership will go beyond the students and staff, as we look to engage our families. Starting on August 22 at our open house we will be asking parents for input on the school year. We will follow-up with a parent involvement meeting on September 5th at 10:00am and 6:00pm. The following week will be our parent-teacher conferences, at which families will have an engaging conversation with their child’s teachers to continue to strengthen our impact in our students’ lives. As the year gets closer and closer to starting please help out and be a part of the leadership focus for the 2017-2018 school year. Together we will make the Frazer family an even stronger component of what makes Plain Local a great community!

Shumaker Attends Teacher Renaissance Art Institute Sarah Shumaker, an educator at Avondale and Middlebranch Elementary Schools was selected as one of only 53 participants of the 2017 National Gallery of Art Teacher Institute on Art of the Renaissance held in Washington, D.C., in July of 2017. The six-day seminar brought together teachers of art, English, history, math, and related subjects from 20 different states. The program emphasized the social and cultural context of Renaissance art in Italy and Northern European countries between the 14th and 16th centuries. The term Renais-

sance, meaning “rebirth,” refers to the humanistic revival of classical culture and learning with its underlying belief in the creative potential of humankind. Participants studied works by leading Renaissance artists as represented in the Gallery’s permanent collection, including the painters Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Titian. Participants learned about the development of oil-painting techniques, the role of prints in disseminating new ideas, using works of art as primary resources in classroom instruction, incorporating art into interdisciplinary

teaching, and strengthening students’ visual literacy. Through lectures, gallery talks, and hands-on activities, participants analyzed Renaissance artworks and focused on interdisciplinary teaching strategies. Activities were designed to meet teachers’ personal and professional enrichment needs. A demonstration of Venetian painting techniques and a site visit to a printmaker’s studio at Georgetown University rounded out the Institute’s course of study. Generous support for the Teacher Institute was provided by the Park Foundation,

the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, the Sara Shallenberger Brown Fund, the PaineWebber Endowment,

and the Annetta J. and Robert M. Coffelt Sr. and Robert M. Coffelt Jr. Endowed Fellowship.

Glenwood STEM Team Competes At Gravity Races For the third year in a Gravity Racing Challenge. has and is geared towards row, Glenwood has sent This event is one of many the learning experience of up a team to Akron for the events the Soap Box Derby building and racing soap box derby cars. Students spent several months assembling full sized super stock soap box derby cars as well as learning about the science behind it all. Glenwood’s Soap Box Derby Club was able to add another car this year, bringing the team to four cars strong. A group of thirty students spent their time assembling and documenting the process of

soap box derby car assembly. Students put together, sometimes several times until it was done correctly, the cars given only the parts and minimal guidance beyond the instruction manual. May 20th, twenty-six of the students and many staff volunteers, went to the Derby Downs to watch as their creations raced down the hill. There is nothing quite like seeing something you built from the very beginnings in action. Although overcast, the Saturday was beautiful nonetheless. Tyler Hoffman, Nina Betro, Paige

Lucas, Beau Parent and Matthew Caldwell were the drivers of the cars and represented their team well. Other students helped swap wheels as part of the pit crew and a third group took pictures and videos of the amazing experience. Eagle Nation should be proud of how our district was represented. There was no end of compliments on student behavior and attitudes throughout the race day. Students had an unforgettable time to end an experience that will stay with them forever.

New Alpine Park Playground Opened The Plain Township Board of Trustees, Fiscal Officer and the entire administrative team welcomes you and invites you to the new Alpine Park Playground. This new playground was funded through a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources! One of the most important aspects of our planning was to develop a playground that did not separate play experiences for typically developing children from children with disabilities. Our main goal was to create experiences that all children, parents, and grandparents, regardless of ability could enjoy together. We believe we have accomplished that goal! Everyone can play at our playground! Everyone

to us includes typically developing children, children with autism, those children and adults in a wheelchair, wounded veterans who want to play with their children and grandparents. The playground creates an environment that increases the playability for people

of diverse abilities and ages and allows them to feel included, fair, independent, active and safe! The Alpine Park playground is a playground that our residents can be proud of for generations to come. It is a playground for everyone!

Cyclists, Runners Invited To Pioneer Ride, Run Submitted by: Julie McAbee (330) 471-8240 In the spirit of fitness and fun, Malone University invites the greater community to participate in the 2017 Pioneer Ride & Run, a fundraiser to benefit scholarships for Malone students. The event will take place on Saturday morning, September 16, 2017.

The event provides options for runners and cyclists, those with experience or those who enjoy family recreation outdoors by offering a variety of distances and routes. President David King will lead a ‘metric century’ ride: 100 kilometers (approximately 62 miles), which begins and ends on

Malone’s campus, looping through Stark and Wayne County. Shorter rides for relaxed cyclists or families will utilize the Stark Parks trails which run between campus and Veteran’s Park in Plain Township. Runners will have an option to complete a 5K on the grounds of Malone
