When I was seven years old, I received a green parakeet for Christmas. I don’t recall having ever asked for a parakeet. Mature for my age, I had likely wanted something more practical, specifically The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for the Nintendo Game Boy. But I got the bird, whom I named Ralph. Ralph’s credits were his festive plumage, ability to squawk very

loudly, and habit of tip tapping on his perch while the radio played. His demerits were his penchant for spitting seeds as far as they could go, fondness for night squawking, and unrelenting need for more and more newspaper pages. After a couple months of his tenure, my parents decided that Ralph’s work was no longer needed. Ralph was resituated to the nearby convalescent home to entertain its residents, where very much in spite of the spirit of convalescence he promptly died. This issue of

Jackie: Since I have a small family and only one of my kids lives in the metro, I need a home with friends my age. Very few men among us are blessed with the robust physique, the saintly good looks, and the spirit of benefaction that it takes to serve as one of Santa Claus’ ambassadors from the North Pole. Fortunately for Santa Tom, he had already been gifted with the whole package when he first received his calling to portray the jolly old elf several years ago. “One day in spring, the owner of a local furniture store I shop at asked me if I would be Santa at a promotional event he was planning on Thanksgiving weekend,” Santa Tom reminisced. “That was the day I quit shaving -- and that’s all it took to complete my look.” “The first furniture store event was wonderful,” Santa Tom continued. “It was all complimentary, so a lot of kids got their pictures taken with Santa that year who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. This became a regular thing for the next seven years, where I built up a nice little following. I was asked by more and more businesses to be their Santa during the holiday season, and before long I was putting 2,000 miles on my sleigh every year making appearances at any kind of place you could imagine, from stores to houses to country clubs to daycares to nursing homes.” “Little kids’ reactions to meeting Santa run the full gamut of emotions. In our society where children are taught to be afraid of everything, it’s only natural that some should shrink away when they’re told to friendly up to the big, strange bearded man who just walked into the room. I’m lucky to be able to bring my wife Christmas Carol wherever I go, who brings a grandmotherly presence that puts wary kids at ease so they can warm up to Santa for a picture. No matter how a kid feels about Santa, though, we always get a great photo -- I’ve mastered the art of photobombing!”

Contrary to popular opinion, the Cold War, the energy crisis, and Nixon’s resignation were not the most significant stories of the day back in 1974. Rather, it was the startling decline of America’s wild raptor population, best exemplified by the disappearance of the peregrine falcon everywhere east of the Rockies and the near extinction of the bald eagle. A future without creatures so captivating to the imagination and vital to our country’s ecology would have been very bleak indeed. Something had to be done, quickly. As is so often the case, Minnesotans took it upon themselves to find a solution to the problem. The University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center was thus established as a place where ornithologists could study and avian veterinarians could medically treat the raptors in such dear need of help. The Raptor Center now admits around 1,000 sick and injured birds every year, as well as helping to identify emerging environmental issues related to raptor health and their populations.

“While saving birds has always been our goal, so too is raising awareness of conservation efforts.”

“The great difficulty in what we do here is how relatively little we know about avian medicine as compared to other branches of veterinary science,” explained Dr. Julia Ponder, executive director of The Raptor Center. “The great majority of medical studies have been conducted on mammals, so we have a pretty thorough understanding of their physiologies. We know relatively little about many of the nearly 200 families of birds, however, and they are all drastically different from one another. What you might know about a chicken will only provide a rough framework for what you need to know about treating a vulture. “Fortunately, The Raptor Center has given our students and veterinarians decades of handson experience working with birds, so we are able to do great work when a falcon or owl comes to us in need of care. Bluestem Reindeer Ranch

With the exception of the Easter Bunny, no animal is as central to a holiday as the reindeer is to Christmas. The arctic ungulate’s efforts are completely indispensable to Santa’s mission to bring toys to good girls and boys, and coal to the ones who antagonize their parents. Suppose Santa’s sleigh were powered by some other creature, like the donkey or ox or noble house cat -- it just wouldn’t be as impressive without the reindeer’s stately antlers, bulbous snoot, and inestimable charm. Christmas would be ruined. It wasn’t out of respect for Christmas that Dave Dorow and Wendy Clark of Maple Lake took in their first reindeer, however. What they wanted at first was a pet. “We’ve always liked having animals around our small acreage,” explained Dave. “Our son used to raise poultry for the 4H back when he was young, and we still have some geese running around who were grandfathered in during that time. We were looking for a new interesting pet, something lowmaintenance, and a friend told us about how much he loved his reindeer. We looked into it, liked what we learned about the animal, so got our pair seven years ago.” The couple came to run Bluestem Reindeer Ranch along with their does Teeka, Solveig, Elli, and Kaya, along with their young buck Bergen. “They’re rugged animals,” continued Dave, “But sweet and gentle, compared to other deer and elk. They each have their own unique personalities. Bergen

You’ll hear one grunt at another when she feels they’re stepping out of line. They’re content to lounge outside even in the bitterest cold, but they rest together around a fan in the warmer months. Every evening they get frisky and run laps around their pen -- the party starts when the sun goes down.” Through their involvement with the Reindeer Owners and Breeders Association, Dave and Wendy learned about a unique opportunity which their pets presented. Now they and their reindeer travel around Minnesota during the holiday season to bring a little deer cheer wherever it’s needed. “The kids’ reactions to the reindeer are the best,” said Dave. “A lot of them don’t even know that reindeer are real animals until they’ve met ours. I guess that’s ‘myth by association.’ They’re excited to learn that even the girls have antlers, and love feeding them animal crackers. One time my wife and I took Teeka into a kindergarten, where a wide-eyed little boy asked us if we were elves. Ha!” Dave and Wendy love sharing their lively reindeer’s charm, and will take two of them to anywhere they’re called in and around the Twin Cities. They’re the perfect spectacle to have outside of a business, and a festive surprise for any child -- especially if Santa Claus might be stopping by that day as well! Dave and Wendy also bring along an antique sleigh when they visit, making the year’s holiday photo shoot setting a done and dusted affair. A little while ago we had gotten word through the grapevine about a man in North Dakota whose husky was escaping from his property pretty often. The city didn’t approve, and the dog was becoming a bother, so the man was planning to shoot her.” “We reached out to the man and told him we would take the husky away with no questions asked. He obliged, so I was tasked with finding the admittedly mischievous dog a new master. I tried very hard to find this beautiful dog a home, but she would become what we term a ‘foster failure’ because I liked her too much so she stayed. Her name is Nala. Like I said, I didn’t technically find a home for Nala -- but Nala sure did find a home for herself.” “Huskies are an intensely social breed,” Chad continued. “Everyone knows that they were bred to pull sleds, but they served another role in the cold Siberian peninsula where they come from, which was to keep people warm at night. It’s where the phrase ‘three dog night’ comes from, meaning it’s so cold that you would need three huskies

The food vendors are all great businesses from around the Twin Cities area. One of their staples is the Holidazzle sausage by Kramarczuk’s which features cranberries and wild rice. When I was a little boy, my dad used to read A Christmas Carol to me every Christmas Eve. I remember asking what gruel was, being frightened by Jacob Marley’s clanking ghost, and wondering what all the fuss about goose was. It was one of my favorite stories ever. But then I got older and started watching a lot of television. This meant being bombarded yearly by countless made for TV movies and holiday specials offering their own renditions of Dickens’ classic. I watched Yosemite Sam, Kermit the Frog, Fred Flintstone, Mister Magoo, and even The Animaniacs reprise A Christmas Carol year after year until it felt stale. I no longer wanted to revisit the story. I know it by heart thanks to Bugs and the gang. The Comedy Roast of Mr. Scrooge, a refreshing approach to A Christmas Carol courtesy of Camp Bar’s in-house theater company Actors Theater of Minnesota, is the perfect remedy for that Dickens ennui. The show, now celebrating its tenth year in production, in no way attempts to recount a story that is already burned into everyone’s memory. Rather, it takes the form of a traditional celebrity roast with the cast of the story stepping up to do the honors. Jacob Marley is the roast master, Scrooge is the guest of honor, and the Cratchit family and the Ghosts of Christmas Present, Past, and Future team up to tear one another to shreds.

It only follows that Minnesota and the Midwest, with its vast strategic reserve of Norskies, should be inundated with lefse. And when Norwegians one day follow their calling to take to the stars and explore the cosmos, you can be certain lefse will be the first thing they have for lunch after they plant their flag on each new alien world they’ve discovered. Bonnie Jacobs of Jacobs Lefse Bakeri grew up baking lefse. (Say that ten times fast.) The recipe had been handed down by her ancestors since their arrival in Minnesota in the 1800s, and not a holiday in her childhood passed by without the three generations of ladies in her family laboring intensely to flatten the lefse dough out just so. Her bakery in Osakis, MN now offers lefse on-site, online, and at the state fair as it has done since Bonnie’s father-in-law carved the store’s first pastry board in 1972.
