Located at 149 8th Ave. in Northeast Minneapolis, the licensed 24-bed care center combines the latest in rehabilitative and medical technology with all the warmth and comforts of home. “Our community is fortunate to have the TCU as part of the continuum of care,” Lora Lallak said, director of transitional care and rehabilitative services. “After years of creating model senior living spaces, this addition has made a significant impact on long-term care census.” To date, the unit has cared for more than 70 guests and the feedback from guests and their families has been overwhelmingly positive. The new TCU offers a physical, occupational and speech therapy room, a hydro spa, and a private, park-like green space. Large private rooms include a bed with a full-size bathroom and a kitchenette, and four rooms come equipped with a ceiling track to help less mobile patients move around. Guests can also enjoy daily access to the on-site beauty shop, bistro, and chapel.

the TCU for post-surgical recovery from procedures such as orthopedic rehabilitation care. A few extra days for recovery in the TCU can give patients just the time they need to regain the strength and function needed to successfully be discharged home. The average length of stay ranges from 15 to 18 days, depending upon the individual’s customized care plan. The TCU receives referrals from area hospitals like University of MN Medical Center, Hennepin County Medical Center, North Memorial Hospital, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, and other care providers. Recognized for its central location and easy access to major highway routes, the TCU is convenient for local Minneapolis residents and downtown commuters to drop off a family member during the week and pick them up on the way home. “We are happy to deliver yet another link in Catholic Eldercare’s continuum of care for the people in Northeast and downtown who have worked hard their whole lives and now need the finest support that can be offered to improve recovery and maintain an acceptable quality of life,” President and CEO of Catholic Eldercare Dan Johnson said.

Socializing Your Dog:
Patios, Taprooms, and More by Whitney Grindberg Grassroots taprooms and breweries are popping up on almost every street corner, offering amazing brews and signature sips. With your friends at your side and a drink in your hand, what more could you need? Well…your dog, for starters. There are many dogfriendly businesses, so you could your pup to a friendly pool game or trivia night. A great idea -- until he yanks the leash out of your hand, knocks over a tray, and trips the server carrying precious pints to parched patrons. The shatter of a once full beer glass is the saddest sound in the English language. To keep this disaster from becoming a reality, make sure your pup is appropriately socialized and trained for this kind of outing. If your dog isn’t a puppy any more, you can still teach an old dog new tricks. It all comes down to what they’re used to.

"No one knows your dog better than you."
If your dog eats before going out they will be less likely to drool over each new smell that wafts by. Also, go for a walk or play fetch before arriving. Exercise beforehand will mitigate their energy level and help keep them calm. But do keep them on a leash at all times! No matter how perfect your

pup may be, no one is above an occasional excited outburst.
The best way to get your dog used to being in public is to expose them to strange people and places on a regular basis. Make a point to regularly bring your good boy or girl to parks, pet supply stores, and anywhere else they can meet new people. This will also give you an idea of where they are in their training and socialization. When your pup is used to new situations, your time at the taproom together may be nearly at hand.
Know When to Opt Out No one knows your dog better than you. If you know your dog isn’t going to fit in where you’re going, then it’s better for them to stay home and safe no matter how they look at you with their big brown eyes. But don’t lose hope -- with enough time, consistency, and exposure, your pup will soon be ready to join the team for your next trivia night!

Locally-Produced, Low-Calorie Protein by Anita Dualeh
Bison is America’s indigenous red meat. It’s a great fresh, locally grown food, and it’s available year-round. (Those tend to be hard to come by in Minnesota in February, don’t they?)

shopdinelive.net Buying Bison Much of the bison that finds its way to the specialty meat sections at grocery stores is produced in the Dakotas. Minnesotans raise their fair share of bison as well, with Eichten’s Hidden Acres producing nearest to the Twin Cities. They sell a full line of bison including ground meat, steaks, roasts, sausages, hot dogs, bratwurst, snack sticks, and jerky. Eichten’s butchers all year and flash freezes their meat for freshness (except for special orders). Eichten’s sells its meat at the St. Paul and Oakdale Farmers Markets once a month in the winter and weekly throughout the

Cooking Bison When you’re cooking tough cuts of meat, slow and low is always best. That is why braising is often recommended for bison. Alternatively, use a slow cooker to retain the meat’s moisture. Bison cooks faster than other meat because it’s very lean, so overcooking can be a problem. When checking to see if bison is done you shouldn’t go by color, as bison meat may stay red in the middle even when fully cooked. The USDA recommends cooking bison steak or roast to 145 degrees Fahrenheit as measured by a food thermometer. If you’re cooking burgers or

meatballs, however, note that ground bison should reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. When I went in search of the meat last month I came home with a pound of wonderful ground bison -- perfect for making meatballs. Full disclosure: I have strong opinions about meatballs. I grew up making them under my father’s watchful eye, after all. Because so few know how to make them properly, meatballs should always be made at home, and proper meatballs do not contain fillers such as breadcrumbs. Considering that everyone in my family always came

back for seconds, I believe I know what I’m talking about! Here is my recipe for bison meatballs.
Now Taking reservations for our
Bison Meatballs • •
1 lb ground bison
•
½ tsp fennel seed
•
½ tsp ground paprika
(90 percent lean)
•
½ tsp onion powder
•
¾ tsp salt
2 garlic cloves, minced
•
½ tsp garlic powder
•
¼ tsp black pepper
Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add two teaspoons canola oil and swirl it around in the pan. Use a #70 scoop to shape meatballs or measure 1 tablespoon per meatball. Cook meatballs in skillet for about 15 minutes, turning occasionally to brown on all sides. Meatballs are cooked when they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid overcooking the meatballs, as this may cause them to become dry. These meatballs are versatile. You can add them to heated pasta sauce and serve them over spaghetti, stir them into a mushroom gravy (homemade, of course), or drench them in your favorite barbeque sauce!

he Academy of American Poets founded National Poetry Month in 1996. For over two decades now we have spent April celebrating what Robert Frost said happens “when
an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” These are the thirty days when you’re compelled to dig up and enjoy your favorite poetry, whether it’s a dirty limerick by Wilde, a clever two-liner by Silverstein, or an entire Homeric epic. But how is poetry faring in the internet age? Does the “crown of literature” still stand as a beloved pastime? Or are we all too buried in our comfy electronics to remember how nice a little rhyme sounds every now and then? “Poetry isn’t experiencing a drought -- it’s going through a renaissance,” explained Hans Weyandt of Milkweed Editions, an independent publisher and bookstore right here in Minneapolis. Milkweed Editions has published over 350 books since its inception in 1980, many by locally and internationally renowned poets. “It’s easy to imagine that kids these days don’t care about it, but the allure of musicality and wordplay will always attract young people to poetry. True, many people are put off of poetry when they’re made to study Milton and Byron in school, but when someone finds relevance in poetry in their own lives it becomes personal.
That personal
significance keeps poetry alive. Because of that, we’re not seeing the digital age as the adversary of poetry, but rather as a wonderful time for people to connect over what best relates to them.” 12

earned his score in 2015. For the spectator who wishes to see the Masters in person, attending can be a bit tricky. There are a limited number of tickets, or badges, and these are sold to the public on a lottery basis. Fans can apply for tickets and hope to be one of the lucky few to get the low introductory price of 65 dollars a day for practice rounds and 100 dollars each for tournament days. After the lottery, tickets are generally resold for drastically higher prices. In 2016 the average one day pass went for about one thousand dollars, and practice rounds sold for five hundred or more per day. It isn’t cheap, but who can put a price on seeing these greats take to the golf course? For the fan that can put a price on this, there is always a great seat right at home. ESPN and CBS will be sharing broadcast coverage of the tournament, and each day will be shown live. The final day of practice rounds also features the par 3 contest and will air live

With the right attitude, the unexpected will just become another part of a journey you’ll cherish for years to come.
Know When to cut Costs If you’re trying to decide between cutting a deal and paying more for convenience, consider which point of the journey you’ll be on. An inconvenience early on will feel less intense than it will at the end of your trip. When you’re exhausted and ready to be home, the last thing you want is an eight hour layover when you could have paid a little more for the direct flight. But never cut costs when it comes to safety. If you’re walking back to your hotel through an unfamiliar area late at night, splurging on a cab is well worth it. Vacations can be relaxing, enjoyable, and affordable -- if you do them right. It takes a little bit of research, a fair amount of patience, and a generous dose of flexibility. And no matter where you go, how much everything costs, and how perfectly your plans work out, with the right attitude your getaways will always be money well spent! |

shopdinelive.net Explore Downtown Living Returns Saturday, May 20
See Downtown’s
Neighborhoods & Sights Like Never Before by Mark Remme Downtown Minneapolis is all about community. It’s about the culture, entertainment, and incredible opportunities located right outside your front door.
It’s a hot commodity. And it’s time for you to be part of it. The downtown residential community has grown to more than 40,000 people -- a 30 percent increase over the past decade. There’s a reason for that. Millennials, empty nesters, and families alike are making the move downtown because of all the city’s core has to offer.
You can see it firsthand during Explore Downtown Living, which takes place Saturday, May 20 from 10 AM - 5 PM.

Churchill Apartments
by David Scheller
Winston Churchill once said “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” Churchill would have approved how the apartment building in downtown Minneapolis which shares his name shapes its inhabitants. When you provide a luxurious place to live in, one which accommodates in every way imaginable, you’re bound to have tenants who work, play, and live better lives owing to the loveliness of their surroundings. Nestled on 111 Marquette Avenue South just next to the Mississippi rises The Churchill, thirty-three stories of class “where the river meets the

The Churchill’s amenities are too many to list here. A movie theater, fitness center, steam room and sauna, enclosed rooftop with panoramic

The Draw of Downtown
by David Scheller
I’ve lived everywhere. I grew up in the woods where the nearest shopping was a general store 12 miles away. Some of its canned goods dated back to the Johnson administration. I’ve lived in New York City, the shining light of the free world, but where the best apartment I could afford was a refrigerator carton next to the Long Island Expressway. Every day I’m grateful I finally struck the perfect balance -- a lively, intimate city with everything to do and nothing to surrender in exchange for it.
Take it from a transplant: downtown Minneapolis is the best place to live. I’m a young guy, or so I tell myself, so I demand that my city should have a great many things to do for people who like cool things. These our city has in spades. I could (and often do) go to a different bar every week, whether it’s the classy and sophisticated Prohibition on the 27th floor of the Foshay or the decidedly racier subterranean dance floor at 508. Planning dates is a snap thanks to downtown -- once you have decided to go downtown, the rest is just details. The Pantages and the Orpheum never let me down, and they lend me their sophistication while I’m trying to impress a certain someone. And how worldly can a guy be, offering to treat to Vietnamese, tapas, or a good old fashioned American steak all within the same walking distance from one another? And it’s not just me. I used to fly out to the woods to visit my folks pretty often, until they finally decided to come visit me here once. I haven’t been back since, because my parents coming to Minneapolis to visit has become a foregone conclusion. They love not driving when they’re out here, opting for going on foot or the bus instead, a reprieve from the long drives they’re accustomed to when they want to go anywhere. This especially suits my mom, who’s a half inch away from needing a periscope to see over the wheel. My dad, a lifelong Yankees fan, has no trouble putting his allegiance aside to root for our Twins at their beautiful ballpark. (The proximity of Target Field to downtown -- it’s like the settlers discovered a baseball stadium and decided to build a city around it.) Many good summer evenings have been spent drinking comically giant beers and cheering for Joe Mauer there. Of course, all of these attractions and amenities wouldn’t mean very much

to me if I had a hard time earning an envelope here. In my stint as a Minnesotan I’ve worked in real estate, security, and insurance downtown, and getting each of those jobs has been as easy as making a phone call and dusting off my interview suit. I even managed to persuade a few

towers. This is hard to say about back home, where I split my working hours between hauling logs, stocking convenience store fridges, and a few other less glamorous things. Whatever you want to do for a living, downtown has got it and it’s asking you to get to work. This is not a singular experience. Minneapolis was built long ago to filter all of the Midwest’s riches through itself. And while flour is no longer its main interest, everything good and lively still flows through the heart of our city. Whether it’s the fun or the work it offers, downtown has everything in the world for us to help ourselves to. I’m afraid to tell the rest of you here that you’re stuck with me forever. That’s my story. What’s yours? See what attracts you downtown at Explore Downtown Living.

Keeping
Brideatzilla Bay by Whitney Grindberg
Planning a wedding is hard. It’s stressful, overwhelming, complicated, and somehow gets increasingly expensive as the big day draws near. It’s no big deal -- only the most important day of your life, right? But no matter how reasonable you think you are, planning a wedding can turn anyone into a “bridezilla” if they’re not cautious. So to keep yourself from biting off any heads, try these ideas to keep the bridezilla at bay!
Guest List - Be Real!
A study published in 2014 suggests that
the more people you invite to your wedding -- and the less you spend -- the more successful your marriage will be. While these two factors don’t directly impact your marital bliss (or lack thereof), they speak to a larger issue: are you valuing the people in your life, or the things in it? No matter our place in life, this is always an important question we should ask ourselves.
Delegation, Delegation, Delegation The less you are personally responsible for, the easier your planning will be. If you trust the taste and judgment of your family and friends, kindly ask them for help as often as you can. If releasing control is difficult for you, bear in mind that you won’t remember most of your wedding day. You won’t even notice the minor details you’re sweating over right now. Just let them go!
Pick Your Battles
If Aunt Lucille insists on inviting her strange
cousin you’ve never met, and allowing her to do so would make every future family gathering easier, sometimes it’s better to give in a little in order to secure a long-term gain.
Embrace the Imperfections Your marriage won’t be perfect, and neither will your wedding day. After weeks of searching for the perfect pair of pants for our groomsmen, one of them showed up on the day of the wedding wearing the wrong color pants. I could have freaked out and sent him back to Kohl’s to find the right pair, but then my wedding wouldn’t have been our wedding. Idiosyncrasies will make your day unique rather than imperfect.
Keep Perspective
Throughout the planning process, fill a little
notebook with all the reasons you’re excited to marry your fiancé. When you’re frustrated, irritated, or about to lose your mind, flip through a few pages and remind yourself of the real reason you’re doing all this. Then, after the wedding, give the book to your new husband to read. It’s not the wedding day that matters so much -- it’s every day afterward. So take a deep breath and try to enjoy the process. It doesn’t feel like it, but the big day will be here before you know it!

contend that it’s something too coarse to even allude to in a family publication. Others might say it’s something more conventional: hunter, gatherer, mother, mastodon groomer, that kind of thing. I say that for as long as we’ve had people who are generally useless save for their ability to make us laugh, we’ve had comedians, and that people like that have been around for a very, very long time.

But nowadays comedians are rare, because telling jokes is risky. If you tell a joke that someone decides to take offense over it could mean sensitivity training, unemployment, or any other kind of social gulag the politically correct would condemn you to. Thank goodness we’ve still got places where grumps have no sway -- places like ComedySportz. ComedySportz is a live improv theater in Uptown’s Calhoun Square. It’s open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 PM for family friendly shows and on some nights later on for the naughty stuff. The show is

between two teams of funny people. How does the scoring work? Good question. But it serves to add a certain suspense while you observe hilarity in the name of great fun.
shopdinelive.net There are several types of bouts, each with its own cockamamie rules to adhere to. In one, the performers had to wordlessly act out bizarre situations construed from random suggestions by the audience: churning pâté-flavored butter, playing softball at Chernobyl, and competing in a roller derby against the cast of Space Jam. And the performer who’d left the room during the suggestion phase was able to miraculously deduce each preposterous premise! In another contest, the teams had to improvise the words to made up movie themes. Listen to people grope for the lyrics to The Ferret and the Unicorn: a Romance with a sour expression on your face. It can’t be done. Finally, they brought a boy up from the audience to declare, over and over, that he’d found some random object in his soup: a rock, a tiger, the United States Supreme Court. The performers peppered him again and again with waiters’ witty comebacks. You’ll find yourself marveling at the wit involved. For those of us who struggle over what to say when they’re only ordering dinner, watching people who know exactly how a Scottish scuba diver would run a post apocalyptic bakery is like watching magic happen. And that the audience loves and eggs on such antics is a testament to Minnesotan wit, explains ComedySportz artistic manager Doug Neithercott.

suggestions because, as Minnesotans, we don’t usually like to raise our voices in an enclosed space because someone might look at us.’ But once audiences get started, it can be hard to turn them off -- everyone’s hidden extrovert comes rushing out. Minnesotans are a great audience. They love to laugh, they’re super supportive because they want you to succeed, and once they warm up they are unstoppable!” Indeed, that it stopped at all is my only criticism of the show. If you want a perfect little night of lightheartedness that you can take your kids, your parents, or your date to, then ComedySportz is as good as it gets when you’re in Uptown. You seldom get to yell nonsense at strangers in public without being taken somewhere quiet and alone for a while.

TWIN TRAILS — HIKING, BIKING, AND MORE by Steve Johnson
A series exploring the best outdoor experiences in the Twin Cities
THE RIVER RAMBLE This pleasant 13 mile ride hugs the Mississippi River shoreline from downtown St. Paul’s harbor all the way upstream to Crosby Farm Park. With a front row view of towboats and barges and beautiful river valley from start to finish, this smooth ride is as easy on the eyes as it is the legs.
DO IT The river serves up a distraction right away during this ride. From the trailhead along Warner Road you’ll get up close to the harbor hubbub. On busy days, a posse of square framed towboats with crow’s nest wheelhouses move about the waterfront under the steely eyes of seasoned captains, shepherding an imposing herd of grizzled barges along the riverbanks. It is a captivating scene. Start riding upstream, following the paved path into the shadow of downtown’s skyscrapers. Pass under Robert and Wabasha Streets and look across to Raspberry Island, home to the Minnesota Boat Club since 1870, and host to presentday bandshell concerts and other events. Just past the bridge are great views in all directions, most notably the downtown skyline, the Science Museum of Minnesota, and Harriet Island on the south river bank. At the east end of Upper Landing Park, split off to the left and be sure to look to the river again to see houseboats of all shapes and sizes, some of them year-round homes to hardy residents. Continue along the river, riding

So many things have to be negotiated at the beginning of this relationship: who gets which cupboards and which corner of the fridge? Who does the dishes on which day? What temperature are we going to keep the apartment at? How do we split up the bills? Depending on how many roommates

It got petty right away. There was no negotiating with them: it was January, but they wanted the heat set at 54 degrees around the clock to keep their heating costs down. Seriously? We had electric baseboard heat which was very economical to begin with, and the bill would be split four ways, but no… we had to freeze all day and night. So, of course, being 21 year olds, the odd-
