CONTENTS Hello,

Readers! is all about

Because it is currently fall, this issue of

fall. In it we explore Sweetland Orchard, a dear little family farm that makes delicious hard apple cider. We check in on Scream Town, Minnesota Jack Sparrow, and Dangerous Linda, the ones to beat for Halloween entertainment. We visit Gasthof Zur Gemutlichkeit, the best German joint in town at which to

4

celebrate Oktoberfest. We see how you can enjoy that crisp cool autumn air on the driving range with Topgolf, or from the comfort of your patio with Do Wood Son. If you prefer to take your fall literally, then jumping out of an airplane courtesy of Skydive Twin Cities ought to strike your fancy. We also examine the essential service provided by Have Ya Herd, who combine yoga with the company of saucy goats for a workout you’ll never forget. (This one hasn’t really got anything to do with fall. Goats defy seasonality.)

Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery Shopping Local: Right in Your Neighborhood by Christina Timm

Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery has grown and cared for a variety of plants since 1896, and we have been growing locally in Maple Grove since 1971. Today we offer services in our garden center to help with perennial beds and container garden design, residential and commercial landscaping, a wholesale program, and a fundraising program to help raise money for local sports teams and clubs. We take pride in growing locally here in Maple Grove for our community for every season.

Growing through the Seasons With about 32 greenhouses making up our operation, we grow for every season for wholesalers, landscapers, and of course our neighboring customers. Our crew takes pride in growing the best possible product for our customers, allowing us to produce mass quantities of plants like Easter lilies and poinsettias. When it comes to growing, our growers are always one step ahead. If you think the big-box stores are crazy for putting out product for Christmas before Thanksgiving, that’s nothing -- we start growing our poinsettias in July. Some plants take longer to grow than others, and knowing when to start planning and growing is very important. Here is a peek into what we grow for every season.

SPRING

‘We are having a Lily good time.’ Spring is Easter lily season, along with Ranunculus, Hydrangeas, and bulb gardens. Depending on the season, we start our lilies from bulbs usually in November so they emerge sometime in December. Timing and precision are key when growing a plant for a specific holiday, especially one like Easter that is different every year. With temperature control and a whole lot of patience our growers need to be everwatchful to make sure our Easter lilies get to the desired height and achieve no less than five blooms per lily. When you receive an Easter lily from us, you can have peace of mind that we dedicated five months to

SUMMER

making sure they are healthy for your home.

‘Living at Lynde.’

With May kicking off our busy season it is all hands on deck with everyone contributing as much time as they can. Wholesale and fundraising orders need to be pulled, trucks filled for deliveries, and our Garden Center restocked multiple times a day. It isn’t a far stretch to say some of us practically live here. Summer annuals are our biggest producer. Every year we adjust what we grow depending on popularity and what’s new to ensure a variety of options for our customers. It makes it that much more worthwhile to see our greenhouses empty knowing the plants we have grown are thriving in our local neighborhood. 4

to deliver a new standard of Northeast living. Not only are the apartments beautiful in this community—featuring spacious living areas, modern kitchens, high-end finishes, and private terraces—but Wyndris also offers opportunities for social interaction and the pursuit of hobbies within a friendly community atmosphere. “Lifestyle preferences have changed a lot over the years,” says Catholic Eldercare’s President and CEO Dan Johnson. “People expect more—as they should. They want to make connections, enjoy the city, and explore interests. Wyndris delivers the kind of upscale downtown living a lot of people want in a close-knit community atmosphere that feels comfortable, secure, and inviting.”

As with any property, another key factor is location, location, location. Wyndris is conveniently located on the Metro Transit line, and near shopping, dining, major hospitals, entertainment, and popular Minneapolis attractions.

“Tenants will have walkable access to the Northeast Farmers’ Market, the riverside park system, favorite dining spots, you name it,” explains Diane Lucas, Director of Business Development at Catholic Eldercare. “We wanted to build a community where people could enjoy being out and about as much as they loved coming home.” Add to that the peace of mind that comes with round-theclock security, maintenance-free living and priority access to Catholic Eldercare’s full continuum of care as needed, and it’s easy to see Wyndris is a community designed to not only fit tenants’ needs now—but also well into the future.

How to Sell Your Home

by David Scheller

There are many reasons why you would want to sell your home. Maybe the kids are moving out and you’re ready to downsize, or maybe more are on the way and you need more space. You may have two homes and need only one, or be preparing to move to an assisted living residence. You might want to live nearer to work, be in a better school district, or even just enjoy a change of scenery. Whatever your reason for wanting to sell your home, the rules for doing so are always the same across the board. I spoke with local Twin Cities real estate expert Eric Mahutga at Keller Williams Classic Realty NW for some pointers on how to get the most out of selling a home.

Skydive TWIN CITIES by David Scheller

It was my grandfather’s opinion of parachutes was that they were wholly unnecessary unless (A) it would be otherwise unhealthy to stay on a plane, or (B) you are invading Europe. His opinion of Europe was somewhat constrained as well: “It’s dirty and people shoot at you.” He didn’t plan his visit there at its best moment. Parachuting has changed considerably since he formed his opinions. Take Skydive Twin Cities, for example. Since they began in 1975,

plummeting back to earth at terminal velocity within as few as 30 minutes of arriving. Skydive Twin Cities is owned by John Bucsko and Kerry McCauley. Kerry, their chief pilot and instructor, is a veteran of the Army National Guard where he flew helicopters for 12 years. It was not during his service that he fell in love with skydiving, however. “The army doesn’t give you a parachute when you fly helicopters,” explained Kerry. “When there’s a problem on a helicopter, you’re much better off trying to land it than taking your chances with the spinning blades.” “After my service ended in 1986, I was eager to get back up in the air,” Kerry continued. “One day my friend and I started talking about parachuting, so out of the blue we just decided to go and try it. We went to this little shack out in the middle of nowhere, where this hippie taught us the basics of skydiving and then flew us up. As soon as I took my first jump, I knew I’d be hooked for the rest of my life.”

“Like me, a lot of our first-timers come to jump on a whim, something they get to cross off their bucket lists. After their initial plunge, most of them are too dumbfounded to even find words -- we get a lot of ‘wows’ and ‘oh my Gods!’” “Our most memorable first jumper was a 98 year old lady. She saw on television that George H.W. Bush had gotten his wings, which are what the army gives to you once you’ve completed five jumps. She figured if the president could do it, then so could she -- and she did. She made all five jumps, and got on the Today Show because of them.” “I took her for her sixth and final jump when I scattered her ashes. She lived for nearly a century, and it was that place she discovered right at the end of her life where she wanted to be forever.” When you go to Skydive Twin Cities, you’re first given a 15 minute lesson about what to expect and what to do. You can go solo for your first jump, but many opt to do a tandem dive, judging that it will be a great comfort to be attached to a professional instructor with over

Minnesota’s Jack Sparrow by David Scheller

If most people were asked to list movies which could give someone their calling in life, they’d likely give the usual answers: Rocky for the athletic types, Dead Poets Society for the intellectuals, Braveheart for those who’d like to emancipate Scotland from British rule, The Patriot for those who’d like to emancipate America from British rule, Gandhi for...you get the picture. Few would venture that Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, however, could create a personal revelation, although for one Northfield man it did exactly that. “I first watched Pirates of the Caribbean when it came out on DVD around 2004,” reminisced Josh Godfredson, professional Captain Jack Sparrow impersonator. “Something about Captain Jack’s character just clicked with me, and without even knowing it I immediately adopted his mannerisms and swagger. This annoyed my wife a lot. That still didn’t stop me from dressing up as him for Halloween later that year at my warehouse job. I even decked out my forklift to look like a pirate ship.” Josh won two contests for best costume that day, one at work and another at the bar afterward. Josh’s reflexive assumption of the vulgar sea dog’s persona helped as much as his fortuitous resemblance to Johnny Depp. “I’ve been chased down at airports before by people thinking they’d spotted him,” noted Josh. “There are a lot worse people to be mistaken for.” Josh would continue donning his Sparrow costume at subsequent Halloweens, where he both won more contests and received unsolicited job offers to host parties in character. These job offers in particular sparked Josh’s interest -- maybe pretending to be a pirate, rather than actually operating a forklift, might be just the way things ought to be.

Josh has now performed as Captain Jack Sparrow full-time since 2013, plundering birthday parties, company events, and any other social occasions that could be improved with a little pirate charm. “The kids’ reactions are the best part of the job,” Josh explained. “If you didn’t know kids, you’d think they were afraid when they first saw me. That’s not the case, though. Their quiet, wide-eyed reaction to the pirate is just their brains adjusting to a wonderful new reality -- that Captain Jack is not only real, but that he’s also right there, and they’re about to meet him. It’s the same reaction I’d have if I saw Cindy Crawford.”

“I once went to a birthday party for a little girl, and met her great grandfather there. He had just gotten the bad news from his doctor a few months earlier, and was making the most of the little time he had left. His family said that seeing me perform was the first time he’d laughed since receiving his diagnosis. I went back for his birthday a little while afterward. That was his last one.” Josh’s work isn’t limited to celebrations. He also engages his thorough knowledge of nautical history and collection of artifacts to teach kids about pirate things at museums. “Teaching in character is a great way to get the ball rolling,” said Josh. “Once

he’s selfish, clumsy, a little debaucherous, and otherwise flawed, he always finds a way to help other people win their own battles. A good character shouldn’t be a perfect hero or villain, but something in between.” “I love this job because I get to make people feel good about themselves. I’ve been blessed to have done this for so long thanks to the help of my crew, who’ve been right alongside me in so many of my adventures. I’ll never get rich by doing this -- I think Johnny Depp rightly monopolized that. But if I could cash in frequent smiler miles, I’d be doing alright.” I couldn’t resist asking Josh to give us a little life advice in character. “Always remember, you can lose everything in the world, today. You have to follow the dream.” Visit mnjacksparrow.com to learn more about how Captain Jack Sparrow can make your party, parade, corporate event, classroom, or museum something to remember. Savvy?

TOPGOLF by David Scheller

As anyone who has ever witnessed me play golf would attest, I am not good at golf. As soon as I go to a course which hasn’t got giant fiberglass animals on it, I am lost. I spend so much time in the sand trap that I could bill ExxonMobil for overtime, and I’ve heard faint Mandarin spoken through some of the divots I’ve made. That’s why I love driving ranges. At those a hack like me can fire balls away with total abandon, just launch them over the horizon without worrying about technicalities like form, par, and skill. I’m particularly excited about the grand opening of Topgolf this fall, the construction of which has loomed intriguingly just north of downtown Minneapolis for months now.

Topgolf began in England in 2000, where they perfected the art of the driving range to make the best use of their limited space. In 2005 they expanded to America, as the British have a habit of doing, and now they have more than 40 venues worldwide. Minneapolis will soon become the newest jewel in their crown. Topgolf’s greatest amenity lies in their technology. Each of their golf balls contains a microchip, and their green’s targets are sensitive to them. Whenever you hit a ball, its impact will register on a big computer screen in your bay. For pros, this means relegating the distance finders to the basement next to their Ping Doc putters and

which you would never find at a conventional driving range. In Quick 9, for example, a player gets three shots at the furthest, middle, and nearest targets as a way of simulating a rapid succession of par threes. It’s the best way to play a quick game without a long drive (in a car). Several other modes of play utilize Topgolf’s science to challenge players’ chipping and driving skills, as well as their sportsmanship and patience in a way that only golf can do. Topgolf offers all the comforts of the clubhouse as well. Here you can enjoy a chef-driven menu along with a full bar while you discuss golf things with your friends, spoil your family, or ostentatiously helm the seat of your company before your impressed and somewhat jealous employees. The requisite wings and burgers are there, as are brunch foods, kid foods, juicy cocktails, and Topgolf’s signature “mushi,” a Mexican-Japanese fusion treat. Topgolf has answered the golf-loving Minneapolitan’s wish for a land of milk and honey. If you’ve any facility with an iron, or just want a nearby and idyllic getaway from the throngs of rush hour, you had better go there. Listen for the sounds of wedge on ground, followed by that I am there as well. Please come up and give me pointers. That always calms me greatly.

This orchard was full of far more than apples. We headed into the cidery itself, a mercifully cold refuge from the hot midday sun. There Gretchen showed me the star piece of equipment, the press, a massive thing made of steel beams and wood plates on rollers. Containers fat with fermenting cider sat around. Brown bottles caught the bits of sun that peeked in. Gretchen told me about small batch cider. “The bigger companies make their cider sweet. It appeals to more people that way. Small cideries like us make drier cider, because too much sugar overpowers the apples’ subtle flavors. That way you can taste the land.” This explanation was interrupted by the same little boy from the orchard, who had snuck up on his mother with

Willow - Heart. Our discussion roused the pigs, who left their sty to check their trough, oink to us, and wallow resignedly. “We started this farm knowing a lot about apples, but not much else about running 20 acres,” said Gretchen. “We’re pretty pleased with the way things have turned out.” As I decided that I too was very pleased with the way the farm was, I felt a pine cone materialize between my feet. Out of consideration for my devotion to research, Gretchen gave me several bottles of Sweetland Orchard’s cider to take home with me. While writing I have had two. Their Scrumpy flavored with cherry and rhubarb is fruity, tart, and a bit like drinking clear blue sky. Their Rustic Apple, which is earthy and ever so slightly acerbic, was as good as the Scrumpy, which is to say that it is very good. I regret that I can not drink their Perennial tonight, as it comes in a wine bottle and I have limitations. I expect that it will also be very good, tomorrow. If you would like to drink Sweetland Orchard’s very good cider, you do not have to go to Webster to get it. It is available in the Twin Cities’ liquor stores, and also at fine establishments including The Bulldog, France 44, and Tilia. If you would like to go to Webster to get it, you are welcome to

Minneapolis Ghost Walks WITH DANGEROUS LINDA by David Scheller

I have a mixed relationship with ghosts. I’ve never believed in them, despite Patrick Swayze’s best efforts to convince me otherwise. Nevertheless, even though I’d be there right at six with my sleeping bag and flashlight if I were offered a million dollars to spend a night in a haunted mansion, I’d still feel a little uneasy about the whole thing. I suppose even though I don’t believe in ghosts, I’m afraid something may be out there that could change my mind. But it is Halloween, and you have to do scary things if you’re too old to trick or treat and not cool enough to go clubbing. That’s why I went on the Minneapolis Ghost Walk, a guided tour of downtown accompanied by spirited accounts of the city’s paranormal past. This isn’t the kind of haunted attraction where costumed actors pop out at you for a startle, because the police would probably have a fit if we did that kind of thing in the city. It’s more of a history of Minneapolis told through the lens of its ghost stories. Dangerous Linda, the guide, is half the show on her own. In her trench coat, waistcoat, and fedora she looks like one of those Film Noir detectives who would boast about having three slugs inside of them (two whiskey, one lead), and she leads the tour with the energy of a carnival barker. When people passing by stopped to listen in on the tour, she told them how they could learn more about it online, and to have a nice night -- a very polite way of suggesting that they move along. No such thing as a free spook. We started out at Mill Ruins Park, where we learned about how the mill got ruined. Linda detailed the disaster’s unsavory aftermath, and recounted how first responders saw something unpleasant and impossible there. I will forego recounting many aspects of the tour in this magazine both out of respect to our more sensitive readers’ sensibilities, and also not to spoil some of the surprises. Let it suffice to say that I’m glad I never had to see the “Bits and Pieces Phantom.” On to the Guthrie, where the spirit of poor Richard Miller once lingered. Rumor has it that his ghost was so lucid that the actors used to practice their lines with him. It took a shaman to coax him along into the great beyond, but not after he became quite the spectral understudy.

E X P LO R E D OW N TOW N At city hall we learned about an infamous hanged man who was still hanging around. The group was collectively unsettled by the silhouette looking down on us from the top f loor. The silhouette was probably equally unsettled by our gawking, before resuming emptying out the municipal waste paper baskets. Next we went to the Foshay, which is lousy with phantoms, and not just the Rolls Royce variety in its parking garage. The old office building turned luxury hotel reportedly has cold spots, sourceless footsteps, and elevators prone to stopping without notice. (I used to work at the Foshay, and attest that the scariest thing I ever saw there was the night club’s restroom after New Year’s Eve.)

“Whether you believe in ghosts or not, a city in itself is a kind of ghost story.” The Depot Hotel didn’t need a ghost story behind it to be frightful that night. It is populated by stark white statues of businessmen, a sailor, a newspaper boy, and other effigies frozen in time. It was as though Medusa had checked out back in the 40s and no one had bothered to clean up after her. Dangerous Linda concluded the tour back in Mill Ruins Park, a perfect circle around the city. She warned us that the more psychically inclined among us might experience a sense of heightened awareness after the tour, which I took as my cue to go find another martini. I thought about what Dangerous Linda taught me over it. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, a city in itself is a kind of ghost story. Every thread of rebar in its towers, every drop of asphalt poured into its streets, every tie in its railroad tracks will one day tell some story of a forebear who has left it. I am glad they won’t all have left so dismally that their departures will resonate as ghost stories. But they will resonate all the same. Gasthof Zur Gemutlichkeit by David Scheller

My dad and I had just spent a proper afternoon downtown, first having watched the Twins trounce the Reds three to one (in spite of our relief pitcher), followed by a good game of axe throwing. Dad had mentioned something earlier that day about an article he’d read on the decline of German restaurants across the country, and that he hadn’t seen one in ages. After he’d beaten me at axe throwing too many times, I said I’d show him that at least one will always be alive and well. Gasthof Zur Gemutlichkeit (roughly translated to “Guest House of Friendliness”) is Northeast’s very own sanctuary for all things German. Its tremendous sense of cheer hits you the moment your walk in. An enormous communal seating area sets the stage for big parties and sing-alongs, little framed photos of rustic scenes from the old country dot every square inch of wall, and Tyrolean hatted accordion players caper around keying songs, pausing occasionally to chirp little yodelayheehoos. If this isn’t the best place to shore up in after a ball game, then there isn’t one. Although some consider German fare among the less prolific of the world’s cuisine, I say they are missing something. Gasthof’s menu offers heroes’ feeds with dishes like wiener schnitzel, rouladen, sauerbraten, and steaks, all served with sides including spätzle, potato croquettes, and, naturally, sauerkraut. I had a jägerschnitzel smothered in mushroom gravy, while dad had a schweinshaxe, a tremendous smoked pork hock that caused three people to come up and ask what delicious mound of meat he had ordered. Gasthof’s beer list is longer than some restaurants’ menus, appropriately populated with lots of German beers, but with the requisite local and domestic stuff as well. I wanted to try Das Boot, a boot-shaped two liter glass of beer which comes with its own set of rules, but I find it incredibly hard to drive after drinking two liters of beer. I instead had a chaste half liter of Hacker-Pschorr, while my dad had a couple of Paulaners. In a rosy mood after our meal I cornered the manager of the place, who goes by Pinoy. “Gasthof’s atmosphere is our

Do Wood Son by David Scheller

“I made this chair and table set for a couple in Stillwater,” explained Manny Moreno as we looked through his binder of past commissions together. “They live in a gated community that wouldn’t let them put any kind signs on their lawn. As strict as those rules are, though, they don’t dictate anything about patio furniture. The couple told me the message they wanted to get across, and I designed something that they loved. Now they’ve got something meaningful on their porch, and they’re sticking it to their HOA in style!” This instance of Manny’s work underscores what he finds so precious about what he does with Do Wood Son. I believe he would be happy enough if he could only make custom wooden furniture from the comfort of his three car garage in Uptown, complete with his ancient bird dog Lucy and saw dust covered ‘63 Impala Super Sport to keep him company. But that he gets to make things which his clients attach special meaning to -- well, that’s the goal of the artist, isn’t it? Getting to thumb his nose at authority is just icing on the cake. “I didn’t get started with professional woodworking until a couple of years ago, when I lost my insurance

shopdinelive.net The inclusion of animals in athletics is not a novel concept. The ancient Romans certainly knew how to spice things up in the Colosseum by adding a few strategically placed lions and bears to the mix. Horse racing wouldn’t be very much without the contribution of horses. Fishing without fish might be unthinkable, although some of us manage to do it just fine. Until recently, yoga has always been regrettably deprived of any animal collaboration. This was due to the difficulty in finding a suitable animal to do it with -- try to include a lion in a yoga class, and you’ll likely have very few people attend it twice. Thank the heavens that we have finally discovered that friendly, gentle goats are the perfect creatures to do Vrikshasanas and Bharadvajasanas alongside. Have Ya Herd of Roberts, WI is dedicated to giving people the joy and relaxation that only goat yoga can provide. Their proprietors Kevin and Jess Lubich weren’t originally interested in goats for their yoga properties, however. They first got goats for their much less entertaining value -- their milk. “We run a full-time dairy farm,” explained Jess. “We have 60 cows, and grow some other cash crops as well. A few years ago, we decided to branch out because of the low price that regular milk was going for, and naturally gravitated by David Scheller

toward goats. In 2015 we brought in 150 of them, outfitted our barn to keep them all, and started getting into the full swing of things. Imagine our surprise when our creamery told us that we were too far away for them to process our goats’ milk!” The Lubichs sold most of their goats to another farm, but couldn’t part with about 20 of them. They had handbottled them since they were kids, let them bounce around in their kitchen on cold winter days, and had even named them. “As soon as you give something a name, you’re attached!” said Jess. This begged a serious question: What do you do with so many goats on a farm where every animal is expected to earn their keep? “One day my father-in-law saw a news story about goat yoga classes that were being held in Oregon,” Jess recalled. “We didn’t know anything about yoga, but we knew that our goats would be just perfect for that.”

shopdinelive.net And so it began. The topic seemed like an obvious choice. Unsolved Mysteries was, after all, the only thing Samantha and I had been able to talk about since the best TV show of our childhood was added to Amazon Prime. Originally aired on NBC from 1987 to 2002, the show featured criminal cases alongside haunted houses, UFO sightings, psychics, lost loves, and supposed buried treasures. It is now mainly remembered as being responsible for plenty of nightmares, due to the combination of creepy theme music and host Robert Stack’s intensely serious voice. There was a time when everyone and their mothers

watched Unsolved Mysteries. But what had happened with those macabre cases? Have their mysteries been solved by now? Or are they still out there, frustrating cold case detectives? Samantha and I resolved to find out. Our idea was simple: We would watch each episode of Unsolved Mysteries in order, research the mysteries, and then talk about them on our show. It would be a lot like a conversation we would have anyway, except strangers could listen in. Or, more realistically, we thought five people would listen (namely our family members after we forced them to). It was Samantha who came up with the title Perhaps It’s You. This comes from the saying Robert Stack often used to close an episode: “For every mystery, there is someone, somewhere, who knows the truth. Perhaps that someone is watching. Perhaps... it’s you.” We wanted to be the people who solved a mystery! Perhaps it could be us after all. After watching approximately two and a half YouTube videos on how to make podcast, we realized that it is much, much easier than we expected. Of course, we had no recording experience, and certainly no recording equipment, but that wouldn’t stop us. We recorded our very first episode at the Brooklyn Park library, which is a palace. For example, they have a recording studio which can be used free of charge. (Like I said, a palace!) One episode, a website, and a logo made with a combination of free apps was all we needed to get started. After all, what did we have to lose? Our dignity? Our minds? We had neither to begin with. Within an hour of posting our first episode on the cruel, cold internet,

• Gig Internet • Competitive Broadband Options • Increase Your Home’s Resale Value • Future-Proof Your Building • Great For Streaming Video

we were already receiving positive feedback from strangers. It was just the push we needed to invest in our own equipment and start taking this thing ever so slightly more seriously. Flash forward a year and Perhaps It’s You is already on its second season. We’ve covered topics ranging from a possibly magic rock to the Roswell UFO crash to a ghost who loved ringing a bell. In the process we have somehow attracted regular listeners around the globe.

We hope you tune in and help us try to solve some mysteries. Or perhaps you should start a podcast, because it’s honestly not that hard. Perhaps It’s You is available on iTunes, Google Play, and perhapsitsyou.com.
