S P OTLIGHT

It’s hard to spend a day in Minnesota without coming across a Love From Companies store. Their Love From Minnesota gift shops are in the Mall of America, and the busiest part of Roseville (conveniently next to a wine store). Their Love From Minneapolis store on 5th and Nicollet, which they share with the Minneapolis Visitor Center, is the famous Mary Tyler Moore statue’s temporary retreat from the renovations going on by her usual spot. Their newly branded Lokel location in the Crystal Court of the IDS Center, “the crossroads of Downtown Minneapolis,” is where they offer their charming collection of gifts in addition to the things office workers need to get by comfortably. They have a sweets depot called iCandy Sugar Shoppe in the Mall of America as well, and they even have a foothold in the Windy City with their Love From Chicago stores there. This impressive array of stores owes its success to Love From Companies’ dedication to authenticity and art, a rare passion these days. Love From Companies was founded by Pat Chinander and her husband in 1979. Starting with only a kiosk on St. Anthony Main in Northeast Minneapolis, in only 36 years she and her team have expanded that little booth into a 23 store empire spanning two states. They’re currently eyeing the city they may offer love from next. Such a big move doesn’t come without careful planning, however. Janet Miller, Love From Companies’ creative director, explained that offering the best souvenirs a place has to offer takes a deep appreciation for the people and culture there. “Before we open in a new market, we have to love it first. It’s right in our name!” explained Janet. “We visit the area, talk with the locals to see what makes them excited about their home, and we steep ourselves in the local art scene. That part is crucial, because in order to offer a shopping experience that speaks true to its home, we design our gifts and decorations with local artists’ work.” “We’re blessed to be rooted in a community with such talented artists, of course,” said Janet. “One of our most popular gifts are our collages of legendary Minnesotans Prince and Bob Dylan, pieces which I’m pleased to learn most people are familiar with. These were made right here in Minnesota by Kristi Abbott, a gifted collagist we’re proud to work with.

We’re currently developing her piece featuring

the famous Bemidji Paul Bunyan into nice things to take home with you!” “We’re working with another local artist named Mark Rivard, too,” said Janet. “He’s a passionate skateboarder, so much so that he recently helped to bring the X Games to Minneapolis this July. His painted skateboards are a blast, and we’re excited to start featuring his pieces in our stores very soon. We strongly support the work Mark’s non-profit Rivard Arts Education does with children, and we can’t wait to see his and his kids’ art on display at the big event this summer and in our storefront on 5th and Nicollet!”

“Let us be objective for a moment. Minnesota is, demonstrably, the best state in the country.” Indeed, Love From Minnesota’s gifts are all intended to deliver smiles. They sell odes to our exceptional beer scene with decanters, branded glasses, and bottle openers made out of hockey pucks -possibly the most Minnesotan thing imaginable. Their line of candles from Whiskey River Soap Company have names like “Office Gossip,” “Frenemies,” and “It’s Only Frickin’ Tuesday.”

Father’s Day Destinations as Unique as Your Dad

by Liz Walker Father’s Day doesn’t always garner the same respect reserved for Mother’s Day.

Maybe it’s harder

to be mushy about Dad.

Maybe your dad is

incredibly hard to shop for. Or maybe the idea of taking your dad out for a mimosa brunch is not particularly appealing, but you never came up with a better idea. Never fear, loving offspring! Here are all the local, out-of-the-box suggestions you need to let your father know you care without making things totally awkward. (A little bit of awkwardness is inevitable, of course. Community Supported Agriculture by Anita Dualeh

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) offers city dwellers a way to enjoy fresh, local produce throughout the growing season. It’s an idea that has been gaining traction among individuals who want to support local food production and sustainable farming practices. Typically, CSA subscribers pay a farmer in early spring and then receive a weekly share of organic produce throughout the growing season. The CSA concept is believed to have originated in the 1960s in Japan, where a group of women initiated a

relationship

to address their concerns about increased pesticide use on farms, a rise in imported and highly processed food, and a corresponding decrease in the farming population.

Finding a Grower CSAs offer environmental benefits as well. Small-scale local farmers find it easier to practice environmentally friendly farming methods. The distance the food has to travel from the farm to your table is also significantly less, which means less fossil fuel is required. Choosing locally-produced food can invigorate the local economy as well. If consumers would divert just one percent of their food dollars into local purchases, the farmers in their area would experience a five percent increase in their income. Additionally, 90 percent of the price of a local food purchase goes directly back to the farm.

What distinguishes Action Sequence is that it’s a puppet show. How can an action movie, the defining characteristic of which is long, complex set pieces, be achieved in such a rudimentary medium?

“It plays off

of how difficult achieving the action is,” said Ackerman. “I don’t think the actions on stage are quite as seamless as what you’d expect from an action movie, but there will be lots of things standing in for expected elements like quick cuts to the next scene.” In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre is known for incorporating messages about social issues in its productions. “I know it’s a little bit of a departure from the shows we usually do at Heart of the Beast in terms of content,” said Ackerman.

“I

I want it to be like a summer blockbuster,” Ackerman said. “Action Sequence lets you sit back, forget about everything that’s happening in the world, and just enjoy the ride for an hour.” In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre will present Action Sequence at 8 PM on June 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, and 24, midnight on June 24, and 2 PM on June 18. The Blooming Butterfly exhibit will open in mid-June. Hundreds and hundreds of butterflies from three continents will flutter by, little stained glass wings beating against nothing to drink nectar from tropical plants in their enclosure. The zoo obtains special permissions to display the non-native ephemeral beauties. For most, this will be the only place they could ever see these butterflies. There is a well-equipped amusement park nearby that’s perfect for kids as well a giant, antique stand alone carousel blaring hypnotic calliope music by the zoo’s entrance. If you would like to enjoy all of this without worrying about parking at the busy zoo, you may take the shuttle from the much bigger parking lot at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds on the south side of Como Ave. It runs constantly, so you only need park and wait for your outing with the animals. Gardening without a Garden

Don’t let your small space hinder your growing dreams.

by Kristin Johnson

Would you love to grow your own fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers, but think you lack the space necessary for a successful garden? If your tiny balcony or lack of a yard is hindering your green thumb, don’t worry! There are many alternative options to grow things without a traditional garden. Whether you have a patio, balcony, or simply a window sill, the garden of your dreams is still possible.

primitive cooking, hunting, foraging, crafting, and more.

Their extensive

personal expertise and passion for the outdoors combined with an impressive shared anthropological and historical knowledge makes a day with Future Necessities a special experience. “When we first started Future Necessities, we didn’t realize how different our life experiences were from the average,” said Blake. Big, burly, and blonde, Blake crossed his thick arms across his chest and smiled at the memory. “One of the first classes we taught was a carving class. We sat everyone down and told them to take their knives out and start carving. No one in the class had even brought a knife. I’ve carried one since I was three!” Gregg grinned through his fluffy white beard. Since then, the three men have refined their teaching style to perfection. They constantly check in on their students’ expertise levels, never assume a piece of information is too basic for an explanation, and never stoop to condescension.

“You’d recognize a birch tree, right?” Yes. “Do you know what a plantain is?” Like the banana thing? (No.) “Have you heard about Ötzi the Iceman?” Yeah! Whatever you already know going into their classes, the men of Future Necessities work hard to create a comfortable learning environment and are consistently gracious, funny, and informative. Future Necessities presents technical skills as part of a greater understanding of human history. In the middle of a technical demonstration about using twining nettle to make string, for example, Blake described the huge nets made by the Calusa tribe of Florida for countless generations. Jeff looked out from underneath his hood and waxed poetic about foraging, trapping, and fire-making as human birthrights.

“These

skills have been around since before homo sapiens. Learning these techniques can help us understand where we came from.”

shopdinelive.net Here’s a quick rundown of just some of the upcoming classes:

June 8 -- The Art of Primitive Trapping

You deserve it all!

Learn the basics of creating animal traps, among them the Paiute deadfall and the twitch up spring snare. You’ll also learn basic animal tracking skills and discuss the ethics of trapping. Primitive trapping is illegal outside of survival situations in Minnesota, but it never hurts to be prepared!

June 10 -- Foraging Edibles and Primitive Cooking Spend six hours with the Future Necessities team foraging and then cooking whatever you find. You’ll learn how to eat nettles without getting stung, which plants taste like cucumbers and asparagus, and how to turn a cattail into a feast. You might even get to try some acorn bread if you’re lucky. Right on the borders of the entertainment district and the theater district, Seven offers a fantastic diverse menu driven by our James Beard Award winning Culinary Director, an upscale, sexy, sophisticated ambiance, an edge for nightlife, and a one-of-a-kind rooftop experience with seasonal cigar lounge.

Impeccable service awaits you.

July 9 -- Moccasins Make your new favorite footwear in this six hour workshop. Everyone will leave with a pair of moose-skin moccasins made just for them!

July 15 -- Wilderness Survival Basics This basic skills class will teach you how to survive in the wild. Beginning with learning how to prioritize your needs in a survival situation (shelter, fire, water, and food -- in that order), this catch-all class will make sure that you’re equipped to survive in a worst case scenario. The men who lead Future Necessities have an infectious passion for nature that makes spending time with them a delight.

If there are any outdoors or crafting skills that

you want to learn, odds that they’ve already mastered them and can teach you. Go to futurenecessities.org for more information.

ITALIAN

FOODS in Minnesota by Whitney Grindberg

My husband Kyle and I recently returned from a three week trip to Italy to visit his aunt and uncle. Their home is in the heart of Tuscany in a small town called Marcialla. After beautiful sunrises greeted us each new day through shuttered windows, we would have breakfast in the Mediterranean morning air and walk the ancient streets to visit the sights and

sounds that the beautiful country has to offer. As breathtaking as the countryside, cathedrals, and castles are, Italy’s cuisine best captured our hearts. Whether we were cooking at home or dining out, we were stunned every time by Italian food’s flavors and authenticity. Kyle’s aunt, who was born and raised in Minnesota, moved to Italy 30 years ago with her Italian husband. In her new home in the Tuscan countryside, she was mentored by the elderly neighbor ladies in the art of authentic Italian cooking. Their secret? Quality ingredients, prepared simply and carefully. Spinach and ricotta ravioletti in garlic butter sauce, Tuscan olives, and creamy mushroom risotto were all at the top of my list of favorites by the time we boarded the plane home. With the flavors still dancing on my tongue as I slept off my jet lag, I got to wondering how I could replicate these incredible foods in our beloved home state. After a little research, my answer was clear: Morelli’s Italian market. Tucked away on the bottom edge of the Payne-Phalen neighborhood of St. Paul, 24

shopdinelive.net Morelli’s is family-owned since 1915. At first glance, it looks like a typical grocery store. I realized it is much more as soon as I walked through its doors and saw the trove of Italian treasures lining its walls. Even the energy of the store is authentic: packed in tight quarters, everything moves quickly, everyone deftly evading collision. Reminiscent of those of the tiny grocers we frequented on the other side of the pond, Morelli’s deli was exactly what I was looking for. It’s packed with more cured meats I could name, a variety of fresh cuts, and all the olives I’d so fallen in love with back in

of that marvel! Just beyond the cold section are corner shelves devoted to jarred olives, pasta sauces, cans of San Marzanos Italian plum tomatoes, and Carnaroli rice for my mushroom risotto. noodle. Mezzetta brand pasta sauces made with truffle-infused olive oil and a few other simple ingredients reminded me of those old Italian ladies’ secret to great food. And the wine! Finding the same bottles on the shelf in St. Paul as I did in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa was heartwarming. They didn’t cost as much as I’d expected either. This is good, because I learned in Italy that you should only cook with wine that you would drink as well. Kyle and I must return to Italy one day to climb a few more castle towers and bask in the romantic sunsets there. Until that day, knowing that we can stock our own pantry with authentic Italian foods and share meals steeped in history and culture is the greatest souvenir I could have ever

hoped for. Italian food is the essence of love. I hope you can visit one day too, but if not take heart that there are markets like Morelli’s around to give you that awesome glimpse of Italy.

LOCAL BEETS: Farmer’s Market Jewels If you think you don’t like beets, then let this be the year to give them another chance. Remember, our taste buds change over time, so maybe now you’ll find this vegetable you once sent into exile more appealing. That’s how it went for me. I had little interest in beets as a child, but a few years ago I tried fresh-from-the-garden boiled beets again -- with a bit of butter on them -- and found they had a remarkably similar taste to fresh sweet corn. (Just try it.) Although beets are typically a deep red color, you can also find golden beets. Research suggests the pigments that give beets their bold colors may also be the source of their health benefits, from helping to fight cancer

and arthritis to preventing neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Beets and beet juice have also been shown to lower blood pressure and improve exercise performance.

shopdinelive.net s a child, I never hung around in bars. My parents never thought of them as an appropriate place to bring their children, and with good reason. Unlike our European counterparts, Americans have historically made bars strictly for grownups. However,

Northeast Minneapolis Brew Pubs by Sam Stinogel

with the smoking ban in full effect and growler sales on Sunday, the times are quickly changing. Beer culture is on the front line of this major shift in how Americans, and especially Minnesotans, enjoy a drink. As brew pubs began to emerge in 2010 they brought with them the idea that drinking didn’t have to be for Friday night blowouts and Saturday morning regrets. Specialty crafted beers were now being made to be enjoyed, not pounded down like so many mass-produced alternatives. They call them craft beers for a reason, and they’re made for people who really care about what they want to drink. This is bringing a new type of clientele into the taproom scene, where the light, gourmet atmosphere is more suitable for families.

shopdinelive.net In Northeast Minneapolis beer culture and family have been brought together hand in hand. There are more than ten brew pubs in this small part of the metro alone, with many more new ones springing up across the Twin Cities every month. As a resident of Northeast, I am pleased to live in an area that is home to so many independent breweries. I should also mention that I am a father, and that I also enjoy a frosted barley pop from time to time. To be able to stop in for a pint and not be frowned upon for bringing my girls in with me is amazing! Indeed Brewing is one of my favorite places to grab a beer or a growler. They have two taprooms that have ample seating, along with a dog-friendly patio. In my youth bars were smoke-filled rooms full of profligates looking to pick a fight (or worse). They were homes to scuffed up pool tables, mean spirited bartenders, and the worst food you could eat on a dare. Not necessarily anymore, though, so come have a beer and bring the kids!

Caves to Explore by Liz Walker

Caves. They are all around us. This statement is particularly true if you happen to be reading this article inside of a cave. While Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, it is also home to several rockier natural wonders. Caves are the perfect summertime destination for goth teenagers and older folks who want to justify their recent flashlight purchases. Luckily, our locality offers a variety of wholesome activities involving caves, perfect fun for the entire family on days when you simply can not stand to play another game of Scrabble. Cave exploration doesn’t necessarily have to involve rappelling and nifty yellow hard hats. Take the Wabasha Street Cave Tour offered in St. Paul, for example. At the bargain basement price of only eight dollars, this 40 minute walking tour explores sandstone caves once used by mobsters for smuggling, nightclubs, and general illegal, mobstery mayhem. Tours are offered every Saturday and Sunday at 11 AM, do not require a reservation, and are handicap accessible. At long last, you’ll be able to say to friends, “You know that History Channel show Secret Passages? No? Well, I went to some caves that were on there one time!” Plus, on Thursday nights, eight dollars and the speakeasy password “Gus sent me” will get you access to Wabasha Street Caves for swing dancing! Doors open at 6 PM, followed by a dance lesson at 6:15 PM and live music from 7 to 10 PM. Then you can finally cross “swing dancing in a sandstone gangster cave” off of your bucket list.

this Summer Maybe you’re looking to get out of town for a little bit. Don’t worry, there are caves there, too! Consider a little road trip out to Mystery Cave, located in Forestville State Park just south of Wykoff. It’s the perfect destination if you are looking to cool off -- the cave stays a constant 48 degrees year-round. The impressive (and allegedly mysterious) cave boasts stalagmites, stalactites, underground pools, and a variety of tour options. There is the Flashlight Tour, for example, a slightly rugged experience where flashlights provide the only illumination during an hour of guided exploration. If that isn’t your style, there is also the Wild Caving and Photography tour to consider. Prices and times vary by tour: Call (866) 857-2757 for more information. “But I hate the outdoors!” you cry. “Aren’t caves just giant hotels for spiders and creepy crawlies?” Well, I’m honestly not entirely sure why you are reading this, but I do in fact have a suggestion for you: The Salt Cave Minneapolis. Rather than a natural cavern, The Salt Cave is a salt-lined room designed for the spice’s natural curative properties -- you know, like a salt lamp, only bigger. In addition to salt therapy (known as halotherapy) by the hour, they also offer massages and meditation classes. They sell gourmet cooking salt as well. (Few wellness centers can advise that you eat the same material their buildings are made from.) If you are looking to relax and enjoy nature’s benefits without actual nature getting in your way, The Salt Cave is the perfect choice. Sadly, there can only be one Batman, but that doesn’t prevent the rest of us from enjoying the splendor and offbeat amenities which caves have to offer. You too can do something new this summer and explore your own (natural or unnatural) dark depths.

Decorating A Rental Apartment – Jazz It Up Sans The Paint! by Sarah Barber

I love color – and I especially love having color in my apartment. Maybe it’s because I grew up in a house with white walls and white carpet, where the only color in my childhood home took the form of little cornflower blue accents throughout. As a young lady, I vowed that when I grew up my house would be an explosion of color.

Enter adulthood. After moving in to my first rental apartment, I inquired with the landlord if I could paint. Surprise! I could not = Major bum out. Time to get creative, I thought, so I busted out my imagination and my apartment became the color oasis I needed it to be. continue reading on the next page »

THE PLACE DESERVE YOU

Rugs. Not only do rugs create separate spaces in the same room, they also have the indelible charm of making a room pop. With thousands of different styles, patterns, and sizes to choose from, you’re really able to capture your personality with your rug of choice.

Paint and re-upholster stuff. Cute dining room chairs, ugly fabric? Re-upholster in different colors, patterns, or different shades to create a sleek – yet unique – collection. You can also rescue a bookshelf by painting the interior a really bright color, or you can paint other pieces of boring and sad furniture and revive

Since the walls are typically the first things we see, decorating them with artwork will

only further enhance the ambience. Choosing different sizes of art and placing them

strategically makes for a visually appealing place for your eyes to travel. You could also jazz up the frames with paint for that extra pop! Have a ton of picture frames? Paint them and hang them on the wall for a new twist in wall art.

Furniture. I have a vintage velvet chartreuse couch, because why not? It gets tons of compliments and it is incredibly delightful. One of the easiest ways to add color is through furniture. Pick a color that you’ll be able to live with and that you can tie other pieces with seamlessly, and voilà – color!

Curtains. Go crazy with draperies and stick to the neutrals with your throws and pillows. Or you can go crazy with both curtains and everything else. Not many windows in your abode? Hang curtains on the wall – no has to know a window doesn’t exist behind your fabric of choice.

Pillows, throws, and who else knows. Another great way to add color is through the smaller stuff in your home: Pillows, blankets, and other random décor like candles and vases can really tie a room together. With a wide array in colors and patterns, you can get as creative as

Hang up those plates in fun pattern, invest in some eclectic floating shelves and display your books in an artistic manner, or indulge your eyes with an enticing presentation of photographs. Think of those white walls as a blank canvas!

Removable wallpaper Or wall graphics. Love this stuff. With an adhesive equivalent to the strength of a PostIt, removable wallpaper works just like the regular kind, except it doesn’t leave any sticky glue or residue behind. I still recommend talking to your landlord about adding this to your walls, since landlords have their own set of rules when it comes to decorating. If the landlord

says no… You can always take wallpaper and frame it accordingly. Removable wall art is also a really inexpensive and fun way to add color and dimension you your place without causing damage.
