Downtown Improvement District Continues to Keep Downtown Minneapolis Vibrant by Jake Woodrich

Get to know downtown neighborhoods at Explore Downtown Living and be part of the vibrant residential scene

Downtown Mpls continues to thrive in a variety of ways, and that includes continued residential growth. Since 2009, the Mpls Downtown Improvement District (MDID) has made a big impact on helping downtown neighborhoods feel more and more like home. Ever since 2009, MDID has focused on making downtown Mpls greener, cleaner, and safer for everyone who lives, works, and plays here.

It’s an

organization that helps set downtown apart. You can see MDID up close during Explore Downtown Living on Saturday, September 23rd. From 10 am - 5 pm, this free event offers a chance to visit 23 residential communities in the downtown area while getting a look at what neighborhood life is like downtown. You can sign up for the no-cost event at exploredtliving.com.

MDID is part of the daily downtown experience. Living in the heart of the city is becoming the trend as residential neighborhoods and communities continue to grow. More than 40,000 residents call downtown Mpls home today -- up 28 percent from 10 years ago. Since 2009, MDID Ambassadors have helped over 800,000 pedestrians in downtown Mpls. Not only do MDID Ambassadors keep pedestrians in downtown Mpls safe, they also help keep over 120 city blocks clean and green through efforts such as removing trash and recycling while also planting and watering plants and trees -- all of which helps keep sidewalks clean and vibrant. Over the past eight years, they’ve removed more than 250,000 bags of trash, 39,000 graffiti tags, and 509,000 gum spots while planting 126,000 annuals, perennials, and trees and removing weeds from 11,000 block faces.

S P OT L I G HT Most importantly, MDID Ambassadors are friendly faces in the streets to help out however they can. MDID is not limited to the Ambassador program, however. Other MDID initiatives helping to create a green, clean, and safe downtown include a Greening Awards program that recognizes and honors greening efforts in our downtown, various pilot projects that provide low-cost environmental changes that improve real and perceived safety (known as tactical urbanism), collaborations with public officials, law enforcement, and outreach groups, and sponsorships of downtown events and programming. MDID is a sponsor of the upcoming Explore Downtown Living event, an initiative of the Mpls downtown council’s Intersections: The Downtown 2025 Plan focused on helping double the residential population in downtown Mpls. While you’re taking part in the event, look for MDID Ambassadors helping to create an extraordinary downtown throughout the city’s core. Downtown Minneapolis is a vibrant, thriving place to live. Learn about how the downtown neighborhoods are continuing to grow and develop at Explore Downtown Living, and get to know MDID by visiting mplsdid.com.

Outpatient Therapy Helps Extend Independence Therapy plays a critical role in helping us stay healthy, stave off injury, and maintain a high quality of life. Those who actively participate in occupational, physical or speech therapy programs have a better chance of staying independent longer into the aging process. At the end of the day, isn’t that what we all want?

Recover your health. Reclaim your life.

A senior community resident came to outpatient therapy with a fracture repair of her upper neck. At first, she wasn’t able to sit without assistance. Walking even a short distance required a lot of help. Fast forward to today. Her strength has improved steadily. Recently, she walked 750 feet and her physical therapist was merely there as a back-up—she did it all on her own.

Speech therapy, she adds, is based in language and communication issues, but can also do a lot for those who suffer from swallowing disorders. This full-continuum, person-centered approach ensures patients not only get the specific rehabilitative treatment they need, but also that the plan can adapt as those needs change. “We’re always monitoring progress and adjusting the pain plan accordingly,” says Merriman-Flory. “So the individual knows that if the first solution doesn’t work, there’s always an alternative.”

Physical therapists like Melissa MerrimanFlory at Catholic Eldercare’s Outpatient Therapy Clinic believe successes like these come from treating patients one on one— combining occupational, physical and speech therapies to develop an individualized treatment plan for optimal recovery. “The goal of physical therapy is to help restore and improve functionality, such as treating balance to reduce the risk of falls, strengthen lower extremities, and improve walking ability,” says Merriman-Flory. “Occupational therapy helps an individual gain the skills needed to perform daily activities, such as getting dressed or cooking a meal.”

8

|

So is outpatient therapy right for you? If you are recovering at home from a surgery, suffering from a recent injury or dealing with the day-to-day challenges of chronic illness, it might be. After all, no one wants to lose their independence prematurely. A tailored therapy plan may be just the ticket to helping you regain the confident, balanced life you deserve.

Outpatient Therapy Services close to home—from a name you can trust. • Physical, occupational and speech therapy • State-of-the-art equipment and wellness center • Warm, home-like recovery environment

placed it along with indoor plumbing as one of the only two requisites for civilization. The ancient Romans, Egyptians, Scandinavians, and many other cultures all held the concoction in such high regard that they attributed their own gods to it. Liquor has been called liquid sunshine, the most potent weapon in war, and the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems. Luckily, Minnesota has a benefactor in Michelle Winchester, whose Twin Spirits Distillery will ensure that we never run out of the stuff. Michelle got into the liquor business when the youngest of her four sons grew old enough to look after himself, finally freeing her time up for a little entrepreneurialism. She wasn’t entirely certain what line of business she ought to pursue, but she had noticed the ever-present demand for liquor and the rise of craft brewing. She reckoned that craft liquor would become the next big thing.

Fortunately, Michelle was able to travel along with her husband Slade during his business trips to New York City. She was able to meet the proprietors of several new craft distilleries there, people who were much more willing to teach their tricks to an outsider than another New Yorker who could compete with them. “Learning about liquor was much easier while I was on vacation, because I didn’t have to drive,” Michelle reminisced. With her new knowledge of the equipment, science, and business behind distillation, Michelle was ready to open Twin Spirits Distillery. Michelle bought land in Northeast Minneapolis and got right to work. Her 600 square foot distillery now has two 100 gallon and two 26 gallon stills, and in them she makes vodka, gin, and what she has dubbed “Mamma’s Moonshine.” Her vodka is made from raw sugarcane and comes in two varieties. The first, M Vodka, is twice distilled and unfiltered for a fuller body, while the second, Claro, goes through a charcoal filtration process to refine and crispen its flavor. Her M Gin is flavored with juniper berries, the only spice gin requires in order to truly be gin, along with cardamom, coriander, and sarsaparilla root to give it a light, fruity taste that’s perfect in a

shopdinelive.net Moonshine, as it turns out, can be anything in the world so long as it’s potable.

That broad definition gave Michelle great freedom

within which she could make her Mamma’s Moonshine, so she chose honey made by the bees at Honey Hill Farms in Hinckley as its basis. This gives it a sweet, flowery flavor, delicious straight or mixed. To add a certain mystique to the drink, Michelle only distills Mamma’s Moonshine during a full moon. Whether this adds something to the flavor is speculative, but it does put Michelle at a far higher risk of werewolf attacks than your average distiller.

“You can follow the directions on the box, or you can take a bite and decide when the brownies are done. Why make liquor any differently?”

While she has learned all the ins and outs of her science, Michelle adds a personal touch to her liquor by bottling it according to its taste and smell rather than a mathematical formula. “It’s like baking for my boys, really,” explained Michelle. “You can follow the directions on the box, or you can take a bite and decide when the brownies are done. Why make liquor any differently? It’s meant to make us happy, not be on schedule!” If you would like to try one of Minnesota’s finest craft liquors, look for Twin Spirits Distillery’s bottles at any of the 60 liquor stores where it’s sold in the Twin Cities. To drink them on-site, visit Michelle’s cocktail room Wednesday through Saturday at 2931 Central Ave NE, Minneapolis. Visit TwinSpirits.us for more information, and remember what W.C. Fields said: “Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite, and furthermore, always carry a small snake.”

A DAy in ReD Wing

by David Scheller

I love the Twin Cities, but I recently became aware that I hadn’t left them for quite some time.

Other, more exotic places in Minnesota

beckoned to me, so I loaded everything I would need for a pleasant road trip -- peanuts, beef jerky, sodas, Kiss CD, and girlfriend -- into the Jetta and set off to Red Wing. It’s a beautiful town. Set alongside a swirl of islands in the Mississippi, Red Wing’s historic downtown is all views of the river and old brick buildings to duck in and out of. Red Wing Confectionery deservedly caught our attention first.

There we bought clusters of nuts

ensconced in rich, creamy chocolate along with foil-wrapped candies in the shape of Red Wing’s town symbol, a red wing. These were meant as gifts for loved ones upon our return, though we ultimately had fewer to give than we’d initially intended.

Any Design...

Just down the way we found the Red Wing Shoes flagship store. I usually eschew shoes despite having two feet myself, but this shoe store had something very special: a 16 foot tall, 20 foot long, size 638 ½ boot to marvel at. It’s made in exactly the same way as one of their regular boots but on a drastically greater scale, it takes a trip up a special staircase just to see the entirety of The Big Boot and play with its fire hose sized lace. A little company museum further justified the trip up a flight of stairs, and once back down I found just the set of cowboy boots I needed to

perfectly complement my magazine writer lifestyle. Newly shod, we continued on around downtown. We popped into Hallstrom’s Florist and Greenhouses where the girlfriend found the nicknacks her friends back home had been so sorely lacking. We browsed the selection at Fair Trade Books as part of my unceasing quest to own more books than I will ever have time to read. We went into Aliveo Military Museum, where admission is free, and saw one of the rifles my grandfather took with him to France. (He would never go back -- he came

under the apprehension during his visit to Europe that the locals were rude and would try to shoot you.) We loved Uffda Shop with its Scandinavian gifts, from napkins bearing the flag of Norway to attractive models of Vikings to hand-painted Christmas tree ornaments. We crossed a local bar called Tators and Dillers and decided we would be heartless if we could pass such a place without stopping in for a restorative.

Back to Table of Centents

shopdinelive.net Once restored, we set about deciding on lunch. I regret that I can eat only one lunch in a day, as there were more than a few places for it that I wanted to try. Red Wing Brewery looked great, a pizza place whose craft beer is served exclusively on-site. A steak on the patio at Bayside Tap and Steakhouse sounded like the ticket too. We were ultimately drawn to the restaurant at the St. James Hotel. There we sat on the deck and watched the river over salads and burgers. The St. James

localforreads local people

proved so special, in fact, that it warranted its own article in this issue. Full of lunch and now tired of walking, we found a swinging bench in Levee Park by the water to sit on. Up the river we could see the tightest turn in the Mississippi, a narrowing which funneled a delicious breeze toward us while we sat in the shade. From across the way we could hear the live band at Harbor Bar begin to play. The singer averred that he stood up next to a mountain and chopped it down with the edge of his hand. Everything was perfect. Having sat awhile in thought we were ready to resume the assault. We went to the Pottery Museum, an ode to the city’s old clay industry. There we saw their vast collection of stoneware, dinnerware, and art pottery. Nothing topped the figurine of a contented sow with her speckled piglets. We exhausted our legs by that point, so we returned to the car to make two more important stops. First, we went to Target to buy mouthwash, a mission which, while rewarding, does not merit further elaboration.

Second, we went to Treasure Island Resort and Casino in nearby Welch in order to get rich. I played roulette because I love it and I’m very good at it. I have a strategy -- I bet on red and black, because that way I

That she walked away with more money than me despite my expert betting was a perplexing but acceptable outcome of the casino expedition. On our way out, the sounds of bells and rhythmic drumming caught our attention, so we gravitated toward its source. Phenomenal -- Treasure Island happened to be hosting an authentic Native American pow wow that day! We looked on in awe as hundreds of participants circled in the field and chanted in full regalia. The complexity of their colorful dress defies description, and the effect of their performance was hypnotic. The ceremony crescendoed when a small circle of men ululated over a drum while others lowered American flags in memory of our fallen veterans. What luck, to chance upon such a thing. And then we went home.

shopdinelive.net by Liz Walker There is a myth that adulthood needs to be boring. Don’t buy into it! One’s maturity or professionalism is not measured in blah earth tones or “tasteful” shades of beige. You really can live the life you dreamed of as a child, full of whimsy and panache. Dare to decorate yourself in full, vibrant Technicolor. Your daily grind is sure to become more lively as a result. Here are the places you can shop at to live in rainbow style!

Steady Tattoo & Body Piercing & Gabby Maravelas Take tattoo artist Gabby Maravelas (known on Instagram as @stabbygabby), for instance. Her work is inspired by 80’s and 90’s toys such as My Little Pony and Treasure Trolls. She specializes in fun, illustrative tattoos with bold lines and colorful glitter effects. We are lucky to have Gabby in the area, because cute tattoo artistry is a style rarely seen outside of Australia and the UK. Now you don’t have to cross an ocean and fight jet lag to finally get the She-Ra or Polly Pocket tattoo of your dreams! Gabby Maravelas is based at Steady Tattoo & Body Piercing right here in Minneapolis where she inks upon a pink table alongside her toy collection and vintage Caboodles. Prices for tattoos vary, but you can book a consultation to talk about your ideas (a Care Bear on your bicep, perhaps?) and what to expect. A tattoo is not a decision to make lightly, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be just as fun and whimsical as you are.

Evenings out in Downtown Minneapolis

by David Scheller

There is a lot to enjoy about living in downtown Minneapolis. You no longer have to invent clever invective for the traffic around you during a long commute home. You won’t pale when you realize you forgot that crucial dinner ingredient at the store, because the store is just around the corner from wherever you are. You won’t have to labor over ways to have fun in the evening, either, because downtown Minneapolis is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to things to do around dusk. Here are some of the best.

n Minnesota, we love our lakes, no doubt about it. We sail, we kayak, we wait for winter so we can build cool fishing shanties.

There is something calming about staring out into a flat, glassy lake, isn’t there? But maybe that simply isn’t enough for you today. Are you looking for some drama from your next nature walk? Some dewy, refreshing air? A new spot for an impressive selfie? Aha! Sounds like it is time to chase some waterfalls (no matter what TLC has to say about it). Let’s go on an adventure together to find the best waterfalls in the Twin Cities area, shall we?

VENETIAN INDOOR WATER PARK

Minnehaha Falls

The most obvious suggestion, of course, is Minnehaha Falls. Minnehaha Regional Park is one of Minneapolis’ oldest and most popular parks, attracting more than 850,000 visitors a year. That is in no small part due to the falls, which drop for an impressive 53 feet from limestone bluffs, and are known to freeze over in the winter. While visible from a bridge right above, Minnehaha Falls is best observed after walking down a few steps to its base. Once in the ravine, you can continue along a walking path by the stream for a pleasant miniature hike. In fact, Minnehaha Park has hiking trails that lead all the way to Fort Snelling, if you are so

In May of 1875, the proud men christened their Italianate edifice the St. James Hotel. Why they chose the Apostle as their hotel’s namesake is uncertain, but it is most likely named after the Court of St James’s in London, a similarly regal and classy affair. and cognac. The stained glass window in this room depicts Red Wing’s four historic industries: farming, fishing, tanning, and cobbling. It’s like history portrayed in candy. It is also here that you may see “The Mona Lisa of Red Wing,” a portrait of a stately, anonymous woman who had been absconded with by an overly revelous wedding guest a couple of years ago. She was promptly retrieved by Red Wing’s finest and restored to her rightful place in the hotel. The Victorian dining room just by is known as “Clara’s Place” after the St. James’ former proprietor Clara Lillyblad, who took over the hotel in 1906. This blue and white wallpapered, tin inlay ceilinged dining area overlooks the boats poking up and down the river. The stag carved into the dining room’s china hutch supervises. A portrait-lined staircase leads up to the rooms in the old part of the hotel, each identifiable by a photo of the old steamboat it’s named after. The halls are very wide, owing to the Victorian practice of women accompanying one another side by side wherever they went. Here is the St. James’ best room, The Boardroom, the walls of which are lined with Red Wing’s own leather. SHOPPING by Dianne Swanson

Grand Avenue in St. Paul is home to an eclectic string of shops and restaurants, many of which are situated in former homes. On a recent sunny Saturday morning, I found myself meandering along this historic avenue, popping in and out of some unique places. My first stop was at Bibelot, which offers a collection of fun gift ideas like a book called Everything I Need to Know I Learned from a Little Golden Book and miniature keychain back scratchers. It’s one of those stores I could lose track of time in, and would have, but my stomach was telling me it was time to move on to somewhere for lunch. I did, however, leave with a shopping bag of goodies for myself and a birthday present for my sister’s upcoming 50th. Café Latte was my destination to cure my growling stomach. It’s a cafeteria-style restaurant, but erase all thoughts that the word “cafeteria” might bring to mind. This restaurant uses only the freshest ingredients in their delicious menu selections. My ordinary egg salad sandwich was doctored up with fixings of my choosing and served with a side salad. The chocolate cake I had for dessert was topped with a half inch of thick, rich fudge frosting. I’m quite sure there weren’t too many calories in

They offer paintings, pottery, jewelry, and many other pieces of art by about 70 local artists, among them a fun T-shirt company called Minnesota Awesome. They make the popular “Minnesota Nice” T-shirt where the I is the outline of our state. A little further along in my travels I popped into the cutest bookstore called Red Balloon

Books. The store features many fun children’s books and toys, but also offers adult fiction and nonfiction selections. Other interesting shops I passed include Creative Kidstuff, Mischief Toy Store, Mama’s Happy, and Wet Paint. For the gentlemen who are so inclined, the tobacconist and smoking lounge Stogies on Grand looks like a fun place to enjoy a cigar.

I couldn’t go home without making a purchase at Just Truffles. This delightful chocolate shop started out in the St. Paul Hotel, and they proudly display photos of celebrities who have stopped in over the years including Marie Osmond and Oprah Winfrey. The Tenors Temptation truffle was created for Luciano Pavarotti, and the Just Chocolate truffle is their most popular offering. This is the one that I took with me. I was actually able to get it all the way home without devouring it

The internet is full of clothing, home decor, and gifts. It can be difficult, in their ideally framed pictures on your computer screen, to see them as anything more than just that: beyond reach, in some magical land where everything is intangible and perfect. But what if I told you by Whitney Grindberg

that there is a place in Minnesota which brings all of these Pinterest-perfect ideas come to life, teaches classes on how to make such amazing goodies, and, to top it all off, supports a handful of amazing charities ranging from cancer research to helping the impoverished in Haiti?

The space at the back of the store is a beautifully designed open area for classes. Gathered Goods Company in Tonka Bay is just that. Owners Tara and Nicole met at a craft fair about two years ago and opened their doors on Mother’s Day of this year, creating an incredible store for shopping locally, supporting great causes, DIY classes, and even private parties. Thirty five local Minnesota vendors display their goods there. I would be remiss not to give you a little sampling of some of the vendors and their wares, so here are a few spotlights: 32

Scott has recently expanded his business to include a few other cities’ skylines as well, so if you’re not from the area or just want to have a little bit of LA in your accessories, you’ve got some options. Through opportunities like Gathered Goods Company, the sky is indeed the limit for this young entrepreneur. (I couldn’t resist!)

Sissi & Co. A vendor that does a little extra good is Sissi & Co. Sissi & Co. has a knack for coming up with fun sayings to print onto water bottles, shirts, mugs, and even paper napkins and stationary. Fifty percent of the proceeds from their “Keep on keepin’ on” water bottle goes toward

own in a class, and for every box purchased (or made), another one is given to a woman at a safehouse in St. Paul. The box may include goodies such as painted coasters, key chains, and zippered bags. They make great graduation or bridesmaid gifts for those looking to give something a little more meaningful than a traditional gift. Gathered Goods Company also offers a fabulous and unique selection of clothing for both men and women. Sarah at Minnesota Made in Stillwater makes the wildly popular screen printed shirts you see on all those trendy people you wish you could be like. Each of her shirts comes with a hidden message at the bottom of the shirt! A new arrival to the clothing scene is a company called Lena Pauline, run by a fourth generation seamstress who specializes in one-of-a-kind dresses made with upcycled materials. The space at the back of the store is a beautifully designed open area for classes. Each class offers a fun, intimate opportunity to discover something new, and refreshments are provided as well.
