ROSENTHAL INTERIORS by David Scheller
Set aside on Fifth Street, just on the cusp of downtown Minneapolis, hides away an institution of the Minnesota retail scene. It is Rosenthal Interiors, just recently renamed from Rosenthal Furniture, and it has endured recession, flood, and fire alike since its inception in 1895 by father and son Aaron and Harold Rosenthal. A family affair, the store is currently in its fourth generation of ownership by Rosie Lebewitz. Rosie is now updating her family’s legacy. Rosie’s plan to revamp her showroom began in 2009, when she decided her store would better continue by abandoning mass produced furniture in favor of higher quality pieces.
Rosenthal Interiors’
new inventory features posh lines of furniture crafted in European countries like Italy and Norway, as well as right here in America. This is the finest furniture the world has to offer. Sleek, minimalistic tables and chairs by Cattelan Italia, geometric conversation starters by Vondom, and comfortable yet elegant upholstered pieces by GAMMA now grace Rosenthal Interiors’ showroom. These are the paragons of modern Old World design. Rosenthal Interiors’ new pieces may be arranged in a room according to one brand’s line only, or mixed and matched freely without chancing that euphemistically dubbed “eclectic” style. These are only three of the 60 luxury brands Rosenthal Interiors now offers. To better display their new product lines, Rosenthal Interiors has just undertaken a massive, six figure renovation to open up their 20,000 square foot showroom.
The bright and airy new space is
adorned with original artwork by local artists. Abstracts by Sandra Felemovicius, Matisse-inspired forms by John Gerber, and odes to Rothko by Emily Quandahl make browsing at Rosenthal Interiors as edifying as a trip to the Guggenheim. They’re all available to take home with you too, of course.

need my special tips about how to beat the heat.
The Pocket Ice Method I like to run, but when I lived in Florida it was hard to do it there. In addition to the constant fear of alligators, brown recluse spiders, and getting run over by people who couldn’t see over the steering wheel, the heat was unbearable. But I’m really, really smart, so I realized that I could actually fill the pockets of my running shorts with ice cubes before a run. They’d melt, giving me their power as I sprinted down the beach Rocky III style. Do this technique even when you’re not running and you’ll always stay frosty. You’ll be a big hit at the bar, too! When you see someone’s drink is out of ice, just suavely drop some of your pocket ice in there. They will like that you did that.

The Beer Method Beer was invented by pirates to help make the Caribbean heat more tolerable while they were sailing around and looking for things to ruin. Many people today don’t know that beer is still useful, though! What you do is this: Drink, like, 50 cold beers in a half hour. The coolness will be so relaxing that you probably won’t even remember the heat that day, and as a bonus the resulting coma will carry you right through to the fall. That’s light jacket weather -- the best kind of weather!
The Dog Method Did you know that when dogs pant they’re not just showing off? That’s right, it’s their way of sweating, because if they

shopdinelive.net ast June I stopped for an oil change in Edina. It was a nice day outside, and the ancient magazines piled around the garage’s waiting room didn’t interest me, so I decided to pass the time at the nearby art fair instead. Beautiful baubles, pretty paintings, and ostentatious ornaments awaited me there, but one artist’s work impressed me in particular. I loved how it conveyed the crispness of a Minnesotan morning, the breeziness of our cornfields, and the shivery feeling you get walking along a small city street on a moody fall afternoon. The paintings belonged to Coreen Johnson, whose velvety Irish lilt was a nice change of pace from the Minnesotan accent to which I’m accustomed. Coreen hails from Whitehead, a quiet seaside town in Northern Ireland. The daughter of a textile man, Coreen would only live on The Emerald Isle until the tender age of six. It was then that her father took a job working with polyester in South Africa and moved the whole family to the veldt for a serious change of scenery. Coreen’s family lived in heavily Afrikaner Cape Town at first, but soon moved to the English speaking city of Durban. Coreen still loves Africa and paints it and its remarkable creatures to this day, but she found her art’s primary subject, the Great Plains, at the age of 25 when she transferred to University of Minnesota to study agriculture. At this point, Coreen has been Minnesotan longer than anything else, and her affection for our state shines through in her paintings.

“I love driving around the country until I have an Aha! moment,” said Coreen. “Minnesota’s light is gorgeous, the way it plays off the fields, the old granaries, and especially the cows. I love cityscapes, too, and the way the light contrasts across their concrete angles, but there’s nowhere like our lakes and prairies for a painter. The diversity of the Midwestern landscape is inspiring.” “Painting for me is a release,” she continued. “I begin in the morning only to pass the whole day away over a painting. I’m not very poetic. I save that for my canvas by depicting life wherever I go. I’m very fortunate that now happens to be here!” Coreen enjoys meeting new people at the art fairs she attends in the summer. Her visitors are often surprised at the juxtaposition of paintings of gazelles and elephants hung alongside landscapes of

rolling dairy farms, which means Coreen very often has to tell her life story. “I would like my work displayed in galleries soon,” said Coreen. “Maybe then I won’t have to do quite so much explaining!” Coreen Johnson is available for commissions including paintings of livestock, pets, houses, and prized possessions including motorcycles

He bought Vine Park, a place with all the equipment and space amateurs needed to brew their own beer, with a partner shortly thereafter. He left Vine Park in 2014, started getting his ducks in a row, and opened Utepils Brewing on February 18th, 2017. “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” Dan told me while I belted down the Ewald the Golden Hefeweizen he had technically recommended. “People have made beer for thousands of years. We don’t have to reinvent it. We don’t need gimmicks. Beer done right is simply beer made well, and making good beer is what Utepils stands for. That’s why I’ve got Eric Harper, a virtuoso brewer and beer man, to run my brewery. I give him the best ingredients to brew in the best facility, and he makes me the best beer.”

My Hefeweizen was delicious, so it was in a vacuum of protest that I continued on to try Dan’s copper-colored Düsseldorfstyle Alt 1848, his clear, nuanced Kölsch-style Copacetic, and finally his Czech Pils, my personal favorite. Now, I’m no beer sommelier. I know when beer is good, and I know when it deserves to be drank -- by me. The quality of Utepils’ drafts floored me. As Dan had said, this was not by chance, because he pays dear attention to the ingredients that he uses. The basis of all beer,

the brewery. (The yeast is local, but only because it can be without sacrificing authenticity -- yeast is yeast is yeast, it turns out.) I had to ask: What does “Utepils” (pronounced OOH-ta-pilz) mean? “‘Utepils’ is a Norwegian word,” explained Dan. “It

There is such a thing as “a taproom in a brewery,” an area set aside from the production where patrons can try what has just been brewed up on-site. Utepils’ taproom, on the other hand, is as literally in the brewery as it’s possible to be. Enormous tanks and the network of pipes that connect them loom over Utepils’ guests, giving the taproom a cathedral feeling. The giant copper lid of a brew kettle umbrellas the bar, making the drinkers under it feel like they themselves are brewing, too. Beautiful Art Nouveau murals, each representing one of Utepils’ beer styles, bathe the taproom in a summery glow. I

Downtown Dining
by David Scheller
“The History of every [...] civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry, and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why, and Where phases. For instance, the first phase is characterized by the question ‘How can we eat?’ the second by the question ‘Why do we eat?’ and the third by the question ‘Where shall we have lunch?” - Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.” Downtown Minneapolis may be placed squarely within Mr. Adams’ third phase of civilization. With its wealth of places to dine out, our city provides ample answers to the all-important question that phase poses. There is no greater luxury than foregoing the grocery store, the oven, and the dirty dishes in favor of dining out, so it is my pleasure to tell you about the finest dining options downtown has to offer! Remember you can enjoy many of these restaurants while also getting great deals and promotions during Explore Downtown Living on Saturday, September 23. YARD SIGNS It’s time yet again for our most hallowed annual tradition, the Minnesota State Fair. This year about two million of us will make the pilgrimage to St. Paul where we’ll mill around with our brother sisters in the late summer sun to cherish our favorite attractions. We’ll go and see the well behaved dogs doing tricks in exchange for treats. We’ll walk through the animal barns and see the handsomest goats, pigs, and fowl the Midwest can summon. We’ll go hoarse screaming on rides, pretend that our contributions to the Giant Sing Along are distinguishable, and be welcomed into the haunted house by the man dressed like Captain Jack Sparrow.

Double Dose of Pork Belly, RC’s BBQ There are different definitions of infinity. Some say it’s the limit of a mother’s love for her child. Others say it’s the length, in hours, of an average visit to their in-laws’ house. We say it’s the amount of bacon that’s socially acceptable to eat in one sitting. RC’s BBQ shares our sentiment, and this year they’ll prove it with their Double Dose of Pork Belly, a 100% ground pork belly burger topped with even more crisp, smoked pork belly plus pepper jack cheese, coleslaw, and pickled onions all served on a toasted bun. Single pork belly? Smart. Double pork belly? Who is RC, Albert Einstein?

True to its cookie roots, the Bowl O’ Dough is served with a side of sea salt-flavored ice milk. This is what Santa Claus eats in the summer.

You deserve it all! by Whitney Grindberg Inside the River Place office building near downtown Minneapolis, the gentle ambience of fountains, afternoon sunlight streaming through the three story windows, and Old World style iron wrought architecture frame Minnesota Nice Spice. As I step Right on the borders of the entertainment district and the theater district, Seven offers a fantastic diverse menu driven by our James Beard Award winning Culinary Director, an upscale, sexy, sophisticated ambiance, an edge for nightlife, and a one-of-a-kind rooftop experience with seasonal cigar lounge.
Impeccable service awaits you.
inside the little shop, I’m greeted by a warm curtain of spices and savory aromas. Minnesota Nice Spice may be small, but it packs a powerful punch of flavor, ingenuity, and good will. Debb Masterson is its energetic founder and owner, and her cozy shop is the result of her creativity and love of cooking. Debb’s philosophy is “Recipes are only suggestions, ideas to be altered and made personal.” Minnesota Nice Spice’s Comfort Zone Mulling Spice brings you right back to the cozy winter mornings of your childhood, and their Great Lakes Garlic and Herb blend is a savory experience which you’ll want to shake on just about everything. Their Cedar Plank Fish Set is just the thing for a fresh catch out of Lake Minnetonka. Their 10,000 Lakes NoSalt Blend is perfect for those of us watching our blood pressure, too. Debb’s favorite all-around summer blend is her Lake Superior Instant Salsa Mix. Minnesota Nice Spice specializes in gift sets. By putting together corporate gift sets for businesses to give to their employees, Debb honed in on a niche market in desperate need of reinvention, making them among the best selling items in the shop. Debb’s entrepreneurial spirit continues to drive her to find new avenues her spices can reach. My favorite? She assembles wedding favors of sample baggies of her spices -- so much more delicious and creative than pouches of Hershey’s Kisses! Debb’s creativity and entrepreneurial spirit again went into play when her sister Lucy came home one day from her time at the Interact Center, a nonprofit arts organization for adults with disabilities. Lucy told Debb that she had to start bringing in her own bottles of water because the Interact Center couldn’t afford

Did you know that if you count our rivers and streams, our lovely state of Minnesota contains more shoreline than California, Florida, and Hawaii combined? Maybe one day in the future we will finally put bars on all 183,326 miles of the shoreline here, but we’re anything but deprived for the time being. Whenever it’s nice out, I always prefer riverside bars over the landlocked variety, because water is the perfect thing to contemplate over a cold beer. I believe that’s what Eastern philosophy calls “Zen.” Here are my favorite riverside bars to enjoy in the summer!

Snowflake by David Scheller
When Chelsea was a girl, she had a horse named Snowflake, a big, white, gentle creature with a pink streak down her nose and a mane like angel’s hair. Snowflake was Chelsea’s pride and joy, and she loved her horse like every girl who ever had a horse has. Chelsea brushed Snowflake and rode her and fed her peppermint candies and whispered in her ear, which Snowflake liked. The funny thing about life, though, is that when it finds out you love something it can at once conspire to take it away. It was only with good intentions that Chelsea’s mother sold Snowflake, of course.
This was in 2003, when Chelsea and
Snowflake were both teenagers. Snowflake went to live with a man in Northfield, and Chelsea and Snowflake didn’t stay in touch after that. Like any great relationship, distance and time would still dull the affair until it faded.

Headliners at the by Anthony Chiofalo
From August 24th through September 4th the whole world will converge upon St. Paul to enjoy the food, rides, and entertainment that comprise the shining light of summer in the Midwest: the Minnesota State Fair. It’s the largest state fair in the United States -- eat your heart out, Texas! The State Fair has something for everyone to enjoy, especially with its live music and comedy, and there’s nothing better than saving your money to go see some of the headliners coming to The Grandstand each year. Music legends including Neil Diamond, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, STYX, The Beach Boys, B.B. King, ZZ Top, The Steve Miller Band, and Lynyrd Skynyrd have all graced us with their talent in past years at the State Fair, and comedy greats like Rodney Dangerfield and Jay Leno have visited to make us chuckle as well.
Here are just a few of this year’s standouts!
Stevie Nicks - August 25th
Jim Gaffigan - August 26th

shopdinelive.net Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons - August 28th Prepare to take a trip down memory lane with America’s favorite Jersey boys. Even if you weren’t around in the 1960’s and you have never been to New Jersey, you’ll be sure to recognize the group’s big hits like Walk Like a Man, Big Girls Don’t Cry, and Can’t Take My Eyes off You. The timeless mastery of the group’s performance will have you up and out of your seat. You really don’t want to miss a classic act like this -- you never know whether they’ll come around again.
Pentatonix - August 30th The a capella group Pentatonix are coming to showcase their astounding harmonies. This all-vocal group is so talented they will have you looking for hidden instrumentalists and swearing they use backing tracks. There aren’t any, of course -- they’re just that good. Mimicking drum beats and instruments using only their voices, Pentatonix’s live performances keep audiences enthralled from start to finish. If you haven’t heard of them before, check out their performances of Hallelujah and Bohemian Rhapsody online. You won’t be sorry.
Garrison Keillor - September 1st Mr. Keillor is taking a break from his retirement to charm us once again at the State Fair this year. We love new Prairie Home Companion host Chris Thile’s sense of humor and frantic mandolin playing, but real Minnesotans will always carry a flame in their hearts for the sensitive baritone. I sure do hope we’ll get to hear about what’s been going on in Lake Wobegon since last year! With such a variety of great performers on their way, there’s truly something for everyone. Be sure to check out the other artists performing and purchase tickets for your favorites at:

Though some people are merely dabbling in new diets which stray from the traditional meat-based one, there is no doubt that vegetarianism and veganism are on the rise. ENTERTAINING IN A SMALL SPACE by Sarah Barber So, you want to throw a party or dinner at your abode … but do you have the tiny apartment woes? Do not fret, my darling, for it is very easy to throw the perfect soirée in your micro apartment. Unless it’s 400 square feet or less, I’ve got nothing. Just kidding.
SKIP THE FOOD By far the easiest, you can skip the food altogether and throw a good ol’ fashioned cocktail party. Set up a bar by using a dresser or a kitchen island, and use your kitchen sink as a cooler – just fill it with ice and place mixers or beer in there. Since consuming alcohol tends to lead to munchies, you can put a few finger food dishes like nuts, cheeses, chips and salsa, or olives on a coffee table or alongside the staged bar area.
REARRANGE YOUR STUFF If you have a small one bedroom or studio apartment, space is very limited. Place bulky furniture in a different area of your apartment, or temporarily move items into your storage locker to create extra space. Typically, when you live in a small apartment, most of the furniture is not against the walls so your home appears to be larger than it actually is. To throw a great party in a small space, you need actual space so you’ll want to move the furniture against the wall and your guests will have room to roam. continue reading on the next page » |

Louisiana Oaks
SELF-SERVICE If you arrange it so your guests are able to serve themselves beverages or food, you’ll be able to mingle and hang out with your guests in lieu of running back and forth from the kitchen. Offer the ability to label one’s cup so you only have to use as many cups as you have guests. This makes cleanup a breeze!

REFLECT AND BRING ON THE LIGHT Mirrors are hands down the best eye foolers in town. Whether they’re hung on the wall or placed strategically on the floor, they become your very best friend since they reflect tons of light and create a larger space. Plus, you can play a game to see how many of your friends check themselves out in the mirrors. Seriously, people

People really do love having a good dinner party to go to. If you decide you are going to prepare a meal, you will maybe want to consider having the food displayed buffet-style, so your guests will not only be able to serve themselves (which is great for you as the host/ess), but you don’t have to worry about creating a table large enough to accommodate everyone, which opens up the seating area for your company.
