LYNDE
Greenhouse & Nursery by David Scheller
Landscaping has carried a lot of significance throughout history. It was so valued by French royalty
that
construction
of
the
Versailles
Orangerie preceded that of the palace itself. The landscape of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater is so central to the home’s design that it may be considered a part of the building. And the most legendary
feat
of
landscaping,
the
Hanging
Gardens of Babylon, is considered so great that it’s placed on par with the Great Pyramid of Giza. These are extreme examples, granted, but they leave no argument against the importance of a beautiful landscape accompanying a fine home. The thing about landscaping, however, is that it’s hard work. Few people envy the paysans who planted Louis XIV’s orange trees, and the Gardener of Babylon must have needed to lug around one heck of a watering can. Planning an aesthetically pleasing landscape also takes experience, so much so that it’s an entire program of university study. Fortunately Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery has got the vision and know-how to turn your grounds into something beautiful. The Maple Grove garden center first started out in the 19th century, when they began growing edible and decorative plants for businesses around the Twin Cities. They found their niche in flowers once color came into high demand after World War I, and in 1982 Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery opened their doors to the public. Now they not only offer their plants and garden supplies to everyone, but also the landscaping needed to best complement your botanical investment. Lynde

service extends beyond the thoughtful placement of trees, shrubs, and flowers. They also specialize in natural and paver patios, water features like streams and bubbling boulders, stone retaining walls, and practically everything else within the vast scope of landscaping. 6

Game Show Battle Rooms by David Scheller
I’ve always loved game shows, dating all the way back to Nickelodeon’s heyday with Legends of the Hidden Temple and Double Dare. (I even got to go on Wild & Crazy Kids when I was eight. It wasn’t televised, so magazine writing is my late-life grab at a claim to fame.) As I grew older and more sophisticated I fell into classics like Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, and of course the very cerebral Supermarket Sweep -- seeing how much ham and cough syrup you can stuff into a shopping cart in 40 seconds is a thinking man’s game. When my girlfriend’s brother-in-law told me that a new place in Golden Valley would let you go and be in a life-like game show experience, I let everyone know we had to do it or I wouldn’t shut up about it. David Sauer and Kevin Letnes founded

entertainment businesses. “They’re the new trend,” David told me. “Our pedal pub and escape room have shown us that people love hands-on fun. With Game Show Battle Rooms, our guests get to do something they otherwise never might have -- who has time to fly to Hollywood just for a slim chance at hugging Drew Carey?”

shopdinelive.net Game Show Battle Rooms offers two different one hour experiences, each split into three subsections based on popular game shows. New Age Frenzy has Minute Games, Million $ Trivia, and Wheel of Phrases, while Classic Showdowns has Friendly Feud, Name that Price, and Wheel of Phrases as well. We opted for the classics, because we are classy people. At the beginning of Game Show Battle Rooms you are sat down to learn the rules and glare menacingly at the other team. I was late, so I didn’t hear all the rules, but was assured it would all be very straightforward anyway. This also meant I couldn’t pick our team’s name, but I didn’t object to being part of “The Winners.” After the brief orientation we were ushered into a game show set sans the cameras and theater seating. I felt like I was in CBS Television City, with all its pageantry and music, and I admit I felt a touch of needless stage fright. Even if I wasn’t playing for fame or money, doing it without looking like a 24 karat doofus was motivation enough. First up was Wheel of Phrases. I was unlucky and spun the wheel’s equivalent of “Bankrupt” twice, making me very popular with my teammates. I did get a letter up there, once, which felt like quite an accomplishment. We lost Wheel of Phrases, but the charismatic red blazered, rainbow bowetied host told us not to worry about it. Next we tackled Friendly Feud. I don’t know who they polled, because none of my thoughtful answers were on the surveys. Do so

few people yell “BAD!” at their dogs that it doesn’t even register as one of the top five things you might say to your dog? Have all of my dogs been abnormally rowdy? This is why Game Show Battle Rooms is good entertainment: It is fun, but it makes you think, too. At this point they brought out comically oversized foam cowboy hats for us to wear, too, so the merits kept adding up. Name that Price was the closer. Fortunately I was in the company of people with a sound grasp of shopping and reality, because my team trounced the other at affixing prices to baby toys and TV dinners. The coup de grâce was their version of Plinko, a towering quincunx which we took turns climbing a ladder for. Here my TV watching experience paid off, because my masterfully dropped pucks went into the valuable slots like heat seeking missiles. It was my finesse and skill that won my team the whole shooting match.

shopdinelive.net The craft beer revolution has hit its stride with new variations of the hip, relaxed microbrewery popping up all over the country. As you should expect, you’ll find some of the best of this hot trend right here in the Twin Cities. Most recently, I discovered Inbound BrewCo and decided to see what they were made of. Located near Target Field, Inbound’s industrial-style space welcomes customers and their four legged companions to come in and try one of their various tap selections every day of the week. If you’re heading to a Twins game or any other attraction downtown, consider adding this new spot to your outing. The dark colored, fashionable brewery is usually contrasted by a colorful food truck just outside and standing by for hungry patrons, which is pretty much everyone after a few pints. The trucks rotate regularly, and fan favorites include The Fabled Rooster Truck, O’Cheeze, Outlaw Grill, and Market BBQ.
Craft beer hounds

“I’m the son of immigrants, a true American,” stand-up comedian Russ Rivas told me. “My father was Guatemalan, and my mother was a Jew from Poland. That’s an awkward mix of a heritage. I always wanted to hit the piñata, but I was afraid that if I broke it we couldn’t return it to the store.” “It’s my theory that Italians are all descended from Jews and Guatemalans, because everywhere I go, people think I’m an Italian. I can’t even get a table at a restaurant without the hostess seating me with my back to the wall.”

by David Scheller One of our own local attractions has just earned the greatest honor the amusement industry has to offer. Big Thrill Factory, which opened in 2013 and has locations in Minnetonka, Oakdale, and Shakopee, has been deemed Top Family Entertainment Center in North America by The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) at their Brass Ring Awards last year. During a ceremony that honors juggernauts like Disney World, Six Flags, and Dollywood, our own hometown heroes took the stage to receive a giant feather in their cap. “It’s a hard award to win,” explained Darrel Blomberg, general manager of Big Thrill Factory. “You’ve not only got to be nominated, which requires an exhaustive explanation of your business model and sales, but you’ve also got to pass 28 different criteria and impress the mystery shoppers IAAPA sends in as well. Fortunately they saw for themselves just how great a thing we’ve got going here.” “In the era of video games which fiber-optically connect everyone in the world, an attraction like Big Thrill Factory has done a few things to stand out,” Darrel continued. “First, we’ve got attractions that can’t fit in people’s houses. Climbing walls, trampolines, arcade cabinets the size of a car -- these are all things people can’t experience at home. Second, we cater to every taste. We have entertainment that everyone can enjoy, from little kids to seasoned CEOs. Finally, we provide a social experience. People come to Big Thrill Factory to have fun as friends and family, together. That’s a feeling you’ll never get sitting in front of a screen, talking into a headset.” Big Thrill Factory is Xanadu for fun-seekers. When Darrel says they’ve got everything, he means it -- those mystery shoppers would certainly have called him out on it if they didn’t. With indoor and outdoor attractions, they’re a great place for an outing any time of the year. (If you’re planning an outdoor family or company outing, Big Thrill Factory uniquely accommodates with indoor entertainment in case the weather goes south.)

shopdinelive.net “Axe throwing is our latest draw, something people don’t generally get to try at home,” said Darrel. “Teammates take turns in our Big Axes Hurling Haul throwing hatchets at big wooden targets. It’s competitive, but also a great team-building exercise for companies because nearly no one has ever done it before. It’s accessible, common ground for everyone. No matter how well you do it, axe throwing is a lot of fun.” “Our laser tag is another one of our big standouts,” Darrel continued. “First of all, rather than having your typical Tron-like aesthetics, our arena is designed by industry-leading set designers to look like it came right out of an action movie. The arena is interactive as well, with sensors you can shoot to trigger fog, sirens, and other effects that might distract your opponents long enough to sneak a few shots in on them. Our laser tag has become especially popular with corporate outings -- who wouldn’t want to shoot their boss with a laser?”

Murder
Mysteries
by David Scheller
Solving a murder mystery in real life is no fun at all. You’ve got to investigate the crime scene, gather clues, interview witnesses, weigh motives, get a warrant, and finally make an arrest. You’re tripped up all along the way by annoying obstacles like habeas corpus, the Fifth Amendment, and relentless dockside shootouts and high-speed car chases through farmers’ markets. On top of all that, even the most meticulous detective risks having all their work undone during trial by some hotshot lawyer in a sharkskin suit. Don’t you wish you could be involved in a murder mystery without the hard work, danger, and, above all, actual murder? That’s exactly the pleasure which Jest Murder Mysteries provides, all the satisfying accusatory finger wagging without having to replace the carpet afterward. If Sherlock Holmes had Jest Murder Mysteries, he’d have stuck to playing violin. Jest was founded by writer, actor, and director Randy Manning in St. Louis back in 1999. He had cut his teeth on some other murder mystery shows, learned what gelled and what didn’t in such a specialized production, and decided he could put on the ultimate one. So he did, and his specialized troops are now based in 15 cities and travel the country to put on dinner shows. Randy’s daughter, Leslie Franklin, has just taken over Jest and continues its whimsical business as Randy envisioned it. Jest works like this: You pick the venue (which Jest will recommend, if you like), arrange dinner, and invite your guests. Then you pick which show you’d like, be it Bullets in the Bathtub, a mobster and flapper speakeasy romp, Death of Blackheart, a pirate hostage fantasy, or any one of their other themed productions. Jest will then ship out the actors needed to turn what otherwise might have been just another perfunctory feedbag affair into an interactive 16

e h TWitch District by Liz Walker
A spell has fallen over south Minneapolis. There lies the Witch District, a group of locally owned businesses nestled between the Powderhorn and Corcoran neighborhoods. They include Sea Wolf Tattoo Company, the Women’s Woodshop, The White Page gallery, and Imbue Yoga, but the heart of the Witch District is a place cryptically known as The Future. The Future is part retail space and part DIY space. In addition to their small store of witchy items, jewelry, oils, and magazines, The Future offers a meeting space for events such as tarot readings, séances, and artist talks. Owner and medium Lacey Prpić Hedtke has been overwhelmed by community support for her unconventional business venture. “It’s inspiring to have so many people come into the shop excited for what we offer,” Lacey said. “I’ve met countless amazing people since I opened the space, and many new projects have gotten off the ground because of their enthusiasm.” Lacey is very proud to support our artisan community, and she estimates that over half of her vendors are local. The Future is notable for hosting residencies for artists, healers, and (naturally) witches. I asked Lacey about how these residencies fit within her creative vision. “I love the

pursuit, and all are welcome to it for casual perusal or thorough research. Lacey recommends the following as good witch primers: Revolutionary Letters by Diane di Prima, Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, and The Many Moons Workbook by Modern Women. Other books on magic, religion, and other interesting topics are available for sale as well. How can people contribute to growing and empowering the Witch District? On this topic, Lacey has the following advice: “If you’re shopping for a unique gift, some magical supplies, or a great read, come and see what The Future has to offer. The business we do greatly helps our artists in residence, and it lets us host our free events as well. See the stunning local art at the Hair and Nails or The White Page galleries. Take a class at Imbue Yoga or Women’s Woodshop. Go vegan for a day with Punk Rawk Labs’ delicious vegan cheese. Get tattooed at Sea Wolf Tattoo. Donate to important projects which promote local public art like Mapping Prejudice or Pillsbury House and Theatre. Just walk around the area and appreciate how special Minneapolis is for having so many artists and interesting spaces.” The Witch District is the Twin Cities at its most authentic. The businesses housed there are all one-of-a-kind and showcase the spirit and individuality that make up the true Midwest. Visit with an open mind and it is sure to cast a spell on you, too.

Twin Cities Brewery Tours by David Scheller
Rebecca Pfeiffer grew up in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota. “Not exactly a bubbling cauldron of activity,” as she put it, a review which in 1999 would draw her to the Twin Cities, widely regarded as the most happening place in the world. “I love the amazing restaurants here,” Rebecca said, “The parks, the theater scene, and, above all, the breweries.”

to discover that we had no such thing at the time, however, so in true American fashion she remedied the problem by creating her own.
Not so for long. Thanks to the Surly Bill of 2012, which permitted all of Minnesota’s breweries to sell beer on site, Rebecca could begin the Twin Cities Brewery Tours leg of her operation. These are the perfect way to experience how beer is brewed, and more importantly how it is consumed, while the tour guide sees

(Admission includes beer.) The chauffeuring bit almost rivals the fun of the breweries themselves -- Experience the Twin Cities has big colorful open air and enclosed coach busses, complete with table seating and plastic cups for people to bond over the growlers of beer they just bought. Darting around town in a bus while drinking beer with new friends is as fun a pastime as it sounds. The public brewery tours frequent stops like Sisyphus, Fulton, Inbound, Utepils, Indeed, and others, but private parties may pick those which they go to. Seating isn’t limited to what a single bus can provide, either, as the tour will engage as many busses as are needed for corporate events, wedding parties, birthday celebrations, or any other occasion which might draw up to 200 people. Experience Twin Cities offers distillery, restaurant, and sightseeing tours as well. They’re also currently developing their Prince tour, a trip around the Twin Cities area to see the places our pop virtuoso made famous. Rebecca’s tours are for locals as well as visitors. “I love showing native Minnesotans something they’d never experienced before. It lets them fall in love with our home in a whole new way.” To learn more about Experience the Twin Cities and explore their many kinds of tours, visit experiencethetwincities.com

Ties Be Damned: The History & Trends of
Father’s Day by Jacob Westin While Father’s Day in the United States is forever and reasonably coupled with its maternal counterpart Mother’s Day, the road to official national observation of the two holidays are, surprisingly, separated by more than a half century. The genesis of Mother’s Day, dating back to the often heart-wrenching familial dynamic experienced during the Civil War, was ultimately recognized as an official American holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. As the movement was gaining steam in the early twentieth century, however, Spokane resident Sonora Smart Dodd — as a tribute to her father, a single parent of six — was crusading for a similar holiday celebrating dads. Unfortunately, her initial campaign was fruitless with reaction ranging from passive nods of disinterest to wholesale antagonistic blowback. After briefly curbing her crusade while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, however, Dodd redoubled her efforts. Over time, Father’s Day became an unofficial part of the culture, as presidents from Calvin Coolidge to Lyndon Johnson openly issued proclamations and speeches in favor of the day. Finally, in 1972, Richard Nixon signed it into law, making it an official national holiday. It seems appropriate, then, given Dodd’s relentless political struggle and the fifty-eight year gap between official parental holidays to honor your father’s 2018 celebration (June 17) with more than… a tie. The forgettable collar-tightening garment as the go-to gift is as old as the holiday itself with very few satisfied fathers along the way. And, with today’s seemingly unlimited access to creative and personalized

shopdinelive.net Tools, of course, are a linchpin of the Father’s Day industry. And why not? Most men love a loud new tool that simultaneously generates frustration and envy among the neighbors. But choosing which tool can be a confounding chore. Here’s a suggestion: simply ask him what he needs. There is a cultural stigma associated with “spoiling the surprise”; however, this needn’t be a hard and fast rule. The typical man would much rather get the 55cc gas chainsaw he wanted than another Phillipshead screwdriver, even if he knew it was coming.
Bring fiber optic internet to your building.
Do not underestimate dads’ appreciation for thoughtful, emotional gifts!
The newest technological gadget or accessory is also a popular, fun choice. And you don’t need to buy him a new iPhone — consider a case, an app, an Apple or Amazon gift card, etc. Something to play with! Finally, a personalized item may be the very best gift. Even if we aren’t seven-year-olds making macaroni cards anymore, we can still be at least mildly nostalgic with our present-giving. Consider an old photograph or cherished memory. While mothers are more often associated with the sentimental, do not underestimate dads’ appreciation for thoughtful, emotional gifts!

Guide to Pets
by David Scheller
Scientists debate just how long ago people started keeping pets. Some argue that baby animals have been adopted since the dawn of humanity, only to be released when they got too big and bitey to pet. Other scientists argue that we only began keeping pets as recently as 1983, but they are not very well-respected. One thing is certain, however: Pets are good. It’s always nice to have a living thing happy to see you when you come home, or, in the case of fish, a living thing. This article is a brief guide to pets. After reading it, you may arrive at an informed opinion of which animal friend is right for you. Anything is possible.
Dog
Dogs are descended from wolves. Whereas one is a ravenous, noisy, and nearly uncontrollable brute, wolves still live in the wild. Dogs are known for having a very poor sense of time, and accordingly will believe you have abandoned them forever, even if you have only gone to get your mail. They are known for going insane with relief upon their master’s return, unless they have engaged some piece of upholstered furniture for distraction during the hiatus. In these instances, dogs go insane with guilt upon their master’s return. A dog is a guilty creature in general, and would confess to faking the moon landing if it could be questioned about it for five minutes.
Cat
Unlike dogs, cats are incapable of feeling guilt at all. In this sense, they are firm believers of karma: If they do something bad to you, it’s probably because you deserved it. Although some people claim that cats are impassionate about their owners, this is not true. Cats often display affection by depositing small dead things around the house for people to find, and also by making certain shelves are always clear of fragile, priceless clutter. Cats have given their name to the expression “cat nap,” which is not very fitting because a nap ceases to be so after 17 hours. If you would like to train your cat, look in your local library for a book on magic.

Busch Gardens invited male supermodel Fabio to take the inaugural ride on their new roller coaster Apollo’s Chariot on March 30, 1999. During the coaster’s initial drop, a goose in flight struck Fabio in the face at a speed of 70 mph. Poor Fabio would require three stitches as the result, although the goose fared far worse. The American woodcock is the slowest flying bird with a maximum flight speed of 5 mph. Rather than sit on them, the Australian brushturkey buries its eggs in a giant mound of rotting leaves. The heat released via the composting process incubates the eggs. Australian brushturkey chicks are on their own as soon as they emerge from the pile. Scrooge McDuck’s net worth is “five multiplujillion, nine impossibidillion, seven fantastica trillion dollars and sixteen cents.”
