We owe a lot to our Irish brothers and sisters. Who could have expected that little lush isle would bestow upon the world such treasures as croquet, radiation therapy, Milk of Magnesia, ejection seats, and extra stout beer? What have we done to deserve film heroes like Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, and Pierce Brosnan? How can we Minnesotans pay respect to our most famous resident Irishman, Lucky the Leprechaun, whose work for General Mills has not only nourished the nation for decades but enriched our state as the result?

by David Scheller The tools of various trades are usually best left to their respective professionals. I am not a paramedic, so I’ve no use for a defibrillator. I am not a cowboy, so I don’t need a cow. I’m not a mechanical engineer, so it’s just as well that I can’t do math. There is an exception to this rule, however. Although I have no practical use for them, I dearly want to control enormous machines that are capable of turning an SUV into a waffle. This is because doing so would be incredibly fun. Randy Stenger and his son drove past a construction site one day.

When his son observed the dangling cranes,

articulated excavators, and burly bulldozers, he asked Randy whether he thought that using them would be much fun. Randy did think that using them would be very much fun, so he advanced to the logical conclusion that he ought to quit his job and open a business that lets people roll over and smash things with the aid of several dozens of tons of heavy machinery. Extreme Sandbox was thus born from a car ride. Randy opened the first Extreme Sandbox in Hastings in April, 2012. The ten acre site initially offered excavators, bulldozers, and wheel loaders for visitors to do as they pleased with, namely digging, smashing, and flattening. The idea took off immediately, and Randy would soon add a fire truck and other weapons of construction to his arsenal.

shopdinelive.net “It’s the ultimate playground,” said Randy. “Everyone loves it. My very first customer told me that her face hurt from smiling so much after playing with the machines, and that’s been the unanimous opinion ever since. Extreme Sandbox has become hugely popular for corporate team building exercises, family reunions, fraternity outings, even bachelorette parties.

The other

day we had a 90 year old lady come in, eager to scratch ‘operating an excavator’ off of her bucket list. It’s hard not to love this sort of thing if you’ve got a pulse.” Randy has since opened another Extreme Sandbox outside of Dallas, and just last year scaled down his concept so it would fit in Rosedale Center. Extreme Sandbox Mini sports two mini excavators, just the things to play around with or challenge your friend to a test of mechanical dexterity on. Extreme Sandbox Mini also has the first heavy machinery training simulators available to the American public, ever.

These six simulators utilize giant

monitors and realistic controls to give users a perfect sense of what it’s like to operate a tower crane, excavator, and other behemoths. I tried some of these simulators for myself. All I managed to accomplish in the tower crane was to ruin some poor truck’s paint job from very high up. Its seat moves, and experiencing what a strong gust of wind would do to a tower crane operator made my heart dance the tarantella. I then determined that you can not, despite any amount of effort, run over the construction workers in the excavator simulator. This is a far cry from what Grand Theft Auto offers, but then again these are not video games -- they are the actual training tools for machines that rack up a hefty bill should they run amok. I have always had sophisticated tastes. While other kids in my high school were wasting their time on flash in the pan musical footnotes like Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Nirvana, I was already appreciating phenomena like Tenacious D, Kiss, and the great “Weird Al” Yankovic. I had all of his albums, his movie UHF recorded from Comedy Central on VHS, and I even got to see him live when I was thirteen years old. Watching Weird Al perform “Fat” in full costume will remain the highpoint of my life until

Back when he was just a shy, accordion-playing nobody, Weird Al got his start by sending his homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento Radio Show. Dr. Demento had clearly learned how to recognize talent back while he attended medical school, because Weird Al’s meteoric rise to superstardom would soon rock the world. Weird Al’s hit parodies including “Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” and “Amish Paradise” are the anthems of our era, and “Albuquerque” is arguably the greatest song ever written, if not the longest.

Now the recipient of four Grammy Awards and biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time, Weird Al is enjoying his fourth decade as America’s foremost song parodist. That means he has earned the privilege of doing whatever he likes, which fortunately for us means coming to the Twin Cities.

It’s anyone’s guess what he’ll decide to play in Minneapolis. He may dust off his subtle, emotional masterpiece “Attack of the Radioactive Hamsters from a Planet Near Mars.” He may remind us all of the unsettling truth with “Everything You Know Is Wrong.” He just may melt our faces off with frenzied medleys of improvised polka, a genre of music which we’re desperately deprived of here in the Midwest. We may expect no less from the genius who penned classic diddies such as “Slime Creatures from Outer Space,” “Weasel Stomping Day,” and “Spam.” Weird Al will play at Pantages Theatre in downtown Minneapolis on April 3rd and 4th. House of Balls by David Scheller | photos by Max Haynes

“We should all ask ourselves what the meaning of life is,” Allen told me. “There are as many answers to that question as there are people. For me, the meaning of life is showing people what I do at the House of Balls.” Minneapolis artist Allen Christian was born and raised in north Minneapolis. His father was a postman who moonlighted for Brinks and hauled rubbish on the side. His mother worked for now defunct Ma Bell. They worked hard to support Allen and his eight brothers and sisters, so Allen learned to work hard too. “I liked art and drawing as a kid, but I always leaned more toward the hands-on work in shop class,” Allen reminisced. “I enjoyed crafting, building tables and lamps, making sawdust. That kind of work drew me to the Seabees after school, where I built buildings, bridges, and airstrips for the Navy. I even built a bowling alley, once. That had to have had some significance for my later work. It just had to.” Allen’s service would take him to Sicily, Spain, and Iceland. These old places changed his perspective on what art meant. He no longer saw it as something to be made, sold, and put on a shelf in order to pretty things up around the house. He realized that the ancient marvels of Europe were their creators’ ways of perpetuating their cultures, and by extension themselves. That made Allen love art. Creating art because you want to love it rather than sell it isn’t the most lucrative approach to the practice. Allen’s materials have always been limited to whatever he can find for free, or at least very close to it. This is beneficial. “Working with found materials means I get to learn about our society by studying its detritus,” explained Allen. “I understand what we value by looking at what we do not.” “By studying a found object or breaking down a machine into its component parts, it’s as though I’ve got a collaborator I’ll never meet. I respect other creators’ visions, and their work influences mine by determining how I can incorporate it into a sculpture.” “People relate to my art because they enjoy identifying its components -- a colander here, a mixing bowl there, the shock absorber from a 1991 Subaru Brat in the middle.” Allen only just recently retired from his electrician job, so now he can really get to work at the House of Balls, his workshop and studio. Located on a dead end at 1504 S 7th St and surrounded by city lights and the bees’ hum of highways, it is Allen’s Xanadu. 20

shopdinelive.net The House of Balls takes its name from Allen’s most popular pieces, bowling balls that he has coaxed into human forms. He describes the process of making these statuettes as revelatory, because bowling balls might contain any number of materials.

For that

reason each one is doubly unique: They are faces and shapes which Allen will have only sculpted once, and

Explore Downtown Living Gives Participants an Inside Look at Downtown Life Enjoy a free outing touring the city’s core on May 19 by Mark Remme There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the downtown Minneapolis community. Each year, more people continue to move downtown for different reasons. The short walking commute to work. The incredible food and nightlife. The entertainment options. Sporting events. Endless possibilities. For many, the question isn’t whether or not they want to live downtown. It’s where to live. Explore Downtown Living has helped eliminate that conundrum. On May 19, Explore Downtown Living will return for a fourth year in downtown Minneapolis. The event, a product of the mpls downtown council 2025 Plan’s development committee, aims to help people experience what it’s like to live downtown with no strings attached. It’s free and features more than 20 downtown residential communities. People sign up online on exploredtliving.com, then decide which apartments they want to visit between 10 am-5 pm on the day of the event. The residential communities are located in downtown’s five distinct neighborhoods: East Town, Central Business District, Loring Park, North Loop, and Northeast. People see the apartment buildings -- including the residential units, roof decks, party rooms, and fitness spaces -- and while they’re touring they can get to know what could eventually be their new neighborhoods. They also can enjoy promotions at downtown businesses including food, beverages, retail, fitness, and more. 24

It also focuses on enhancing greening and the public realm, transportation, ending street homelessness, and adding innovation through a festival of ideas called the Minneapolis Idea eXchange. Through six 2025 Plan committees, more than 350 volunteers work to enhance the downtown community. Explore Downtown Living is a byproduct of that vision, and through this shared belief in downtown’s vibrancy and vitality these volunteers are helping keep our city’s core vibrant and thriving. shopdinelive.net Hosting the Super Bowl just brought a lot of well-deserved attention to downtown Minneapolis. Approximately 70,000 were fortunate enough to come to The Big Game in person, among whom were visitors from 130 countries. Over one hundred million people joined the festivities by watching our massive new stadium on TV as well. Our guests are still clamoring about how visiting downtown Minneapolis is the greatest, but they’re only right to some degree -- because living here is even greater still. People interested in living downtown can see it in a whole new way during Explore Downtown Living on May 19. This free event highlights approximately two dozen residential properties in downtown’s five neighborhoods. Sign up at exploredtliving. com and enjoy and discover the heart of the city. Downtown Minneapolis’ most striking feature for visitors and locals alike is our new Nicollet. This stripe of culture and commerce has always been our defining characteristic, but with its recently completed updates it’s now better than ever. Freshly planted shade trees, enhanced sidewalk spaces, and improved lighting along the promenade make it a pedestrian destination year round. Stay tuned for the next big thing in downtown’s public parks: Water Works, which will feature a millembedded pavilion, tree-sheltered city steps, and naturalized play space along the Mississippi Riverfront near the Stone Arch Bridge.

A REASON TO COME

HOME

Downtown is always adding new places to explore. The Armory, which we’re all already familiar with thanks to Prince’s music video for “1999,” made its debut last year as one of Minnesota’s premier event venues. It has already attracted headliners including Judas Priest, Slayer, Tech N9ne, and Jack White who are booked to play there this year. Along with U.S. Bank Stadium, Target Center, and First Avenue, The Armory is another patent of downtown’s reputation for live entertainment. With so many new and exciting things always coming to downtown Minneapolis, it’s no wonder we’re experiencing an ongoing population boom here. Our population has grown by 36 percent in only the past 12 years, with last year having seen the greatest gain of them all. That’s creating a lot of demand for living space, one that will be well met with so many fine apartment and condominium

Like all great writers, I watch a lot of TV, so when I say American Ninja Warrior is a good show you can take my word for it. Imagining what it’s like pouncing around on the zany obstacles, cheering on the contestants you arbitrarily decide to root for, and laughing when someone who has only just been introduced to the show during a heartwarming and inspirational vignette falls off the first hurdle is sound fun. You never get to see anyone fall down on Wheel of Fortune, except for the banned 1989 episode in which Pat Sajak tumbled headfirst off of the catwalk. Jaysen Saly of Roseville shares my enthusiasm for American Ninja Warrior, albeit in a far more personal way. He was on season nine and made it to the top 40. “I would have made top 30 if I didn’t fall off the crank it up obstacle, lamented Jaysen. Jaysen’s build up to his television appearance was the culmination of his longtime devotion to personal fitness. “I used to work in the corporate world as a sales manager.

I was overweight and unhappy with

my body, but one day something finally clicked and I began my total body transformation, Jaysen recounted. He started working out and competing in marathons, Tough Mudders, and Spartan Races until he’d dropped 40 pounds and developed the body of a Greek god. Jaysen became a certified trainer and left the corporate slog to help others unplug and get off the couch. Jaysen used to pilgrimage to Buffalo twice a week to train at the obstacle gym there in preparation for American Ninja Warrior. Even someone as focused as Jaysen couldn’t endure such a grind, however, so he now sits in the catbird seat at his very own Five Star Ninja Warrior at 2500 Cleveland Ave N, Suite H, in Roseville.

Does the name Mary Bue sound familiar to you? Well, you may already be familiar with her as a musician, well known for performing around the Twin Cities and beyond. “I was drawn to yoga as a way to balance out the roller coaster of emotions that come with being an über sensitive singer-songwriter and living the lifestyle of touring and playing in bars all the time,” said Mary. “Yoga has grounded me and helped me to stay in control of my ego...sort of!” In fact, many of Imbue’s instructors are also musicians, making it a comfortable space for creatives who may not enjoy the typical gym experience. “This is yoga for normal people,

I

like walking around, but I hate freezing to death. Fortunately we live in the land of 10,000 shopping malls, and you can

find me strutting around in one of them pretty often this time of year. Now, don’t get me wrong -- I couldn’t do without my friends at Macy’s, Barnes & Noble, and Claire’s, but sometimes I like my indoor walks with a little more culture. That’s when one of the more than 50 museums in the Twin Cities come to the rescue. Here are two very good ones.

The Bakken Museum Medtronic founder Earl Bakken has always loved medical contraptions, and not just the ones he created.

Now, suspend your

disbelief when I tell you Mr. Bakken has made quite a lot of money, and that with it he has managed to amass an astounding collection of antiquated therapeutic machines.

Mr.

Bakken’s collection grew so great that he bought a beautifully landscaped Gothic Tudor mansion by Lake Calhoun just to hold it all, and that is The Bakken Museum. Many of the devices date back to when people thought electricity was some potent healing force, best encapsulated by the “Electricity is Life” machine from 1905. This functional coin operated (now gratuitous) cure-all has one metal handle to hold and another to crank. Do it correctly and will receive a healing jolt through your palms and lose the desire to try it again. Other relics like the spatial vector electrocardiograph and the set of lobotomist’s tools will make you appreciate how far medical science has come, largely thanks to the efforts of people like Mr. Bakken himself. Even if you don’t want to electrocute your kids, bring them to The Bakken Museum anyway.

by David Scheller Going without internet these days is tantamount to not having power, heat, or plumbing. Fifteen minutes sans email and Facebook is enough to turn even the liveliest social butterfly into a pariah. A gamer without internet is as good as chopped liver, and good luck to the telecommuter who hasn’t got a proper connection -- the office isn’t going to appreciate their work submitted via smoke signal.

Compound the stress of relocating with not being able to work, update your friends on your new surroundings, or look at your uncle’s vacation photos, and you’ll have a grade A situation on your hands. Fortunately, we’ve got North Star Fiber standing by to make connecting to high speed internet fast and simple. This local ISP specializes in

Oakdale Village Located just east of Saint Paul, Oakdale Village is ideal for residents who commute to the city. The apartment community is walking distance to several parks and lakes, and only a short drive away from Battle Creek Regional Park on the river. There are plenty of restaurants and shopping nearby, and it’s near Tartan High School as well. Oakdale Village’s grounds are like a park in their own right, replete with trees, patios, picnic tables, and grilling areas. Here residents may enjoy the volleyball court and playground with slides and monkey bars. Dogs are well-accommodated with their own fenced in area and obstacles to master within. The apartments in Oakdale Village’s five buildings are available in studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom sizes. An apartment at Oakdale Village has everything needed to stay cozy with ceiling fans, air conditioning, natural decor, lots of natural light, and updated flooring throughout. A full and modern laundry is on the premises, relegating trips to the laundromat to the past. Oakdale Village features free surface lot parking. Single car garages, those much needed things in the winter, are also available.

They have on-site management, a lobby with

beverages and snacks, and a free DVD rental service with a rotating selection of classics and new releases to choose from. If you are searching for your new home near Saint Paul but away from its hustle and bustle, give the people at Oakdale Village a call any time to schedule a showing.

CAT TRIVIA

“In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” -Terry Pratchett

Bastet (also known as B’sst) was an ancient Egyptian feline deity. Originally revered as a ferocious lioness warrior, Bastet’s image gradually softened until she became the goddess of perfume and house cats.

A study conducted by the University of Tokyo in 2013 revealed that

It was once rumored that Tibbles, a lighthouse keeper’s cat,

exterminated an entire species of bird on a New Zealand island back in 1894. Although Tibbles certainly did no favors for the flightless Lyall’s wren, experts now attribute their ultimate downfall to additional, non-Tibbles related factors.

The British Post Office formally hired cats to keep mice in check from

1868 until 1984. The most legendary among them is Tibs the Great,

one cat,” Tibs the Great weighed 23 pounds at the time of his death. This was more likely due to him living in a staff dining room rather than his hunting proficiency.

A cross between a male lion and a female tiger is known as a liger.

Cheshire Cat Chess is played like normal chess but with two additional rules: Once a space has been used, it may never be used again, and a king may move like a queen during its first move.

Cats have made their own mark in history. Accidental cat prints have been found on a 1st century Roman roof tile, the pages of a 15th century Croatian manuscript, and a 16th century Japanese plate.

In 2012, Sugar the cat of Boston, Massachusetts fell 200 feet from her owner’s 19th story window. She landed on a patch of mulch and walked away from the ordeal unscathed. Sugar hit the ground at approximately 77 miles per hour.

Voice actor Mel Blanc once explained that Sylvester the Cat’s voice is identical to Daffy Duck’s except that it has an even more exaggerated lisp and is not sped up in post-production.

President Jimmy Carter lived in the White House with his pet Siamese cat named Misty Malarkey Ying-Yang. Contrary to what most people think, it was public opinion of President Carter’s cat’s name that cost him the reelection, not the failure of Operation Eagle Claw.
