LYNDE
Greenhouse & Nursery by David Scheller
When Sir Elton John was audited in 2000, the British court asked him to explain why he spent $380,000 on flowers over the previous year and a half. His answer was perfect: “I like flowers.” Who doesn’t? They’re brilliant things, colorful little bursts of light, delicate yet tenacious enough to have survived everything between now and the time of the dinosaurs. In Minnesota, however, flowers need a little help to flourish. Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery is here to provide just that. Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery first started out in the 19th century, when they began growing both edible and decorative plants for businesses around the Twin Cities. After World War I, when everyone was starved for a little color, they found a niche in flowers. They moved from their original location in Golden Valley to Maple Grove in 1971, and they opened their retail garden center to the public in 1982. Over the course of more than a century, Lyndes have always run their business. Ed Lynde is the fourth of his generations to run Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery, and his son Derek will become the fifth one day. Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery now provides plants for a wide range of clients. With 32 greenhouses in operation, they service wholesalers, private businesses, cities, churches, and anyone else who could do with beautiful, well cared for plants. Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery’s garden center is open every day save for during the first three months of the year, which is when their gardeners are hard at work getting the new year’s crops in order. There you will find a great variety of seasonal plants, all potted and healthy and ready to go with you to liven up your home. Their wholesale department is the perfect place for landscapers and retailers, as they not only offer all the annuals clients could want in bulk, but also deliver around the Twin Cities and to Wisconsin as well. Their commercial landscaping department is ideal for city planners looking to beautify their town. If you have been to Maple Grove or Woodbury, you have likely seen the Lyndes’ work in person. Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery also has a fundraising department. There they help organizations like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and local sports teams by selling them plants for wholesale prices so they may turn around and sell them to their benefactors for retail prices.
If your sports team needs new equipment and
uniforms, a few of the Lyndes’ seasonal poinsettias are all you’ll need.

Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery’s residential landscaping department is their newest and most exciting venture. For only a nominal fee, they will send a landscaping expert to your home to assess your layout, take photos, and go to work researching which plants will best accent your home’s natural beauty. Should you choose to work with them after receiving their proposal, that fee will go toward a complete botanical makeover which will enrich your home for years to come. “Temperate climates like Minnesota’s mean a lot of planning when it comes to landscaping,” explained Christina Timm of Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery. “You have to take the winter into consideration as well as bloom times. Our mission is for our clients to always enjoy color when they look around their grounds. In the spring, we advise azaleas and rhododendrons, as they’re vibrant and early bloomers. In the summer, we plant hydrangeas among other things. They’re relatively low maintenance, and our new Quick Fire varietal is stronger, blooms longer, and changes color from white to pink to merlot as the season progresses. We also have the Endless Summer hydrangea. You can purposefully change the colors of its flowers by adding certain nutrients to its soil. For the fall, we recommend Tiger Eyes Sumac. Its lustrous summer leaves brighten to a hot red in the fall. Our burning bush, with its unique boxy twigs, adds fiery zest to the autumn as well.”
“If you’re looking around your home right now and pining for liveliness, this is a great time to consult with Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery.”
“Most people think the winter is forfeit when it comes to garden color,” continued Christina, “but it doesn’t have to be. Our red twig dogwood is one of our many plants that bring color to the wintertime with its spindly, scarlet branches.” If you’re looking around your home right now and pining for liveliness, this is a great time to consult with Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery. They not only have a garden center stocked with every kind of plant you could hope for, but they also accompany it with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Go there on November 18th from 10am to 2pm so you can enjoy the annual Christmas at Lynde celebration. There they will have Santa Claus to take photos with you and your family, complimentary hot slices from Frankie’s Pizza, and a balloon artist and a face painter for the kids. Go to pick up a festive holiday plant, and ask what they may do for you once the ground thaws.

You don’t need any more reasons to love turkey beyond that it’s delicious.

“The second is that Minnesota is close to feed producers. Between two thirds to three quarters of the cost of raising a turkey is feed, so operating in a grain growing state surrounded by grain growing states gives Minnesotan farmers a huge competitive advantage on shipping costs. Minnesota turkey farms rely on the crops from about 1,800 corn and soybean farms.” “The third is that we have a great balance of production and processing. In addition to all of our turkey farms, we have three processing companies in Minnesota: Jennie-O Turkey Store, Turkey Valley Farms, and Northern Pride, Inc., which have facilities throughout the state. They give farmers a lot of options when it comes time to process their birds, and it means they don’t have to travel relatively far.”

Modern turkey
farming only requires half the feed that it used to, which vastly reduces our industry’s carbon footprint. We owe that improvement to a number of factors including breeding, our studies in nutrition, and raising birds indoors where they’re safe from predators and the elements. We’re always looking for ways to improve our methods and keep Minnesota at the top of its game!”
“Finally, we have a strong infrastructure and great research programs thanks to the Minnesota Board of Animal Health and the University of Minnesota. The school has really helped the industry as a whole thanks to their work improving ventilation, nutrition, and the methods we use to prevent disease.” “Our climate gives Minnesota another distinct advantage in raising turkey. Turkeys generate a lot of heat on their own. Because it’s cool here, farmers don’t have to spend as much money on air conditioning as they would farther down south.” 8

Santa Randy by David Scheller
Growing up believing in Santa Claus meant that I pondered certain questions begged by his actions.
Why did Santa use the same
wrapping paper for my presents that my mom did for my cousins’? Did

they buy it at the same Boy Scouts fundraiser? How could my grandpa always hear Santa’s sleigh bells on Christmas Eve, even though I never did? (It’s fortunate that he could, though, because I’d always go to bed as soon as he told me. Santa can’t work if you’re awake.) If Santa rewarded good children and snubbed bad ones, why then did James Laughlin get Sonic & Knuckles for the Sega Genesis for Christmas while I only received an easel, even though he pushed me off the slide

the Boy Scouts. Of course an old man would have had more practice hearing things than a little boy would have. I got revenge on James Laughlin by letting him take the rap when I pushed Jessica Lamb off the slide one time during recess, too. And that tired point kids make about the ubiquitous Santas you see around the holidays not being the real guy? Of course they aren’t the real guy -- they’re Santa’s helpers, doing his work for him on the street while Santa himself tends to the more important job of teaching elves how to make Sega Genesis games. One such local deputy is Santa Randy, and few men are better qualified to make Father Christmas’ appearances for him.

North Loop by David Scheller
Up until recently, Minneapolis’ North Loop was solely for industry. If your idea of a perfect afternoon is listening to railroad tracks clattering beneath iron wheels while you walk around produce warehouses, I fear it’s rather too late to experience that in the North Loop. If you’re searching for shopping leisure, however, you’ll find this neighborhood brimming with excitement. Make an appointment in advance if you would like to go to Maison Spring, one of the Midwest’s premier interior design boutiques.
They import luxurious
fabrics, wallpapers, and linens from Europe for discerning Americans who would only have the pinnacle of class in their homes. At Maison Spring they prescribe to pioneering designer Le Corbusier’s philosophy that “the home should be the treasure chest of living.” If you’re a bibliophile, you must have been to James & Mary Laurie Booksellers when it was open on Nicollet Mall. A veritable Library of Alexandria, the shop has recently relocated to the North Loop where it still offers more than 120,000 volumes of individually selected fine books along with classic records and antique maps and prints. I found an autographed copy of Fifth Business there, which was fortuitous because that novel’s author is regrettably unavailable to sign his books any longer. Oscar Wilde said that “Looking good and dressing well is a necessity.
Having a purpose in life is
not.” If you agree with him as wholeheartedly as I do, then you’ll love Atmosfere, an industrial-chic men’s fashion store. True to its name, Atmosfere emphasizes atmosphere and creates a fascinating one with its decor fashioned from salvaged barn materials. They specialize in preparing men who are about to go to the altar. On that note, North Loop Wine & Spirits provides that most essential thing for a healthy, long-lasting marriage.

St. Paul European Christmas Market
When I was a child, I would awake in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve and creep to the living room. Peering around the corner, I would gaze at the lit Christmas tree. Surrounded by brightly wrapped presents of all shapes and sizes, it stood like a beacon of wonder and excitement. A sudden tingling feeling would jump to my throat, I would suppress a joyful shout, flee back to my bed, and shiver under the covers in feeble hope of returning back to sleep. Whenever the snow falls and hushes all noise and worry, and the soft gleam of colored lights casts a warm glow around me, I feel that same magical Christmas feeling. It’s a small, warm sensation that begins deep in my heart and slowly

Holidazzle, downtown Minneapolis’ annual winter festival, is returning to Loring Park this year Thursdays through Sundays from November 24th to December 23rd. Colorful lights will brighten the night air for this celebration of community, a place to go to rub elbows with your family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors while enjoying shopping, entertainment, and fine food and drink. Holidazzle is all about telling stories, and its stories feature the local people, places, and products that make the holidays special in Minneapolis. These include local vendors offering clothing, jewelry, bath and body products, and other wonderful things all made right here at home. There is something for everyone here, which makes Holidazzle a one-stop shopping destination

Fat Bike hard cider, too. (Holidazzle is especially festive because you may drink outside there, provided you stay within the confines of the festival.) Beloved holiday standbys like pretzels and roasted nuts will combat the cold air as well as annual favorites like Kramarczuk’s special cranberry and wild rice sausages. Holidazzle also dazzles with its brilliant lights. Strings of bulbs will glow in technicolor throughout the park, an electric rainbow. Every Saturday after the opening weekend will feature a winter fireworks show (the fireworks on the opening weekend will take place on Friday, November 24). The athletic types can take to the skating rink at Holidazzle, guaranteed to stay frozen no matter the weather thanks to the miracle of refrigeration. If you don’t have skates or just don’t want to lug your own around, take advantage of the complimentary skate rental. If skating chills you out too literally, or if just walking around has numbed your fingers, head into the warming hut to put some color back in your cheeks.
“Santa Claus himself will be there and in position to take photos with children of all ages.” You can’t have a festival without music. Holidazzle will host a variety of performances ranging from rock to country and more, a tribute to how many styles of music that Minneapolis gives rise to. The live acts will play one after the other, each performing for about a half hour, and even when the music isn’t live it won’t stop thanks to the speakers set up around the festival grounds. Santa Claus himself will be there and in position to take photos with children of all ages. True to his character, Santa will do it all for free. After they’ve met the big man, take your kids over to the obstacle course to tire them out in anticipation of the ride home. More surprises will be part of the Holidazzle festivities. Visit holidazzle.com over the coming weeks for updates to the schedule. Whether you’re going with your family, a date, or to make new friends, Holidazzle is the best way to get the most from downtown this special time of year. Go shop, go eat, go drink, and, above all, go be merry. |

A Trip to Duluth by David Scheller
My girlfriend and I got a bad case of wanderlust last September and couldn’t live with ourselves until we went on vacation. She suggested that we go to the rainforest, but then I read that some kinds of monkeys there can hang from tree branches by their tails. That’s kind of weird, so I nixed the rainforest. I suggested that we go to the desert, but then she read that there are no Michael Kors outlet stores in the desert, so naturally she vetoed it. We’re realistic, but a little hard to please. Our vacation destinations have to be spot-on perfect, ideal blends of scenery, culture, and fine dining. That’s why we agreed on Duluth. I pointed my car north, put a cinder block on the accelerator, took a nap, and two and a half hours later there we were in that beautiful port town. We parked in Canal Park and set about a late breakfast at Little Angie’s Cantina and Grill. Full of guacamole and Spanish rice, we walked down the little pier leading past giant old anchors to the lighthouse. There Lake

Having risked the integrity of our outfits by standing beneath flying seagulls for long enough, we headed back into town. She was pulled toward Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory like a satellite falling out of orbit. That place does unbelievable things with candy apples, making them more candy than apple by the end of it. We ate fudge and turtles. We’ll return one day for the rocky road caramel apple, which doubles as a medieval mace. I am a very thoughtful man, so I had pre-ordered us two tickets

to a Vista Fleet cruise. We sat on the deck, approving of the waves and the scenery as they occurred to us. The narrator said many things which I should have written down for this article. The lift bridge honked enormously as we passed under it. We had the good fortune of running across a grain freighter out there, a steel behemoth which we followed back into the bay. On the calmer waters we saw giant silos, the city on the hill, and ducks frantically trying to get out of our way.

After we adjusted to life back on land we decided to investigate the commotion at the park by the aquarium. It was the prelude to the hot air balloon festival, complete with a grounded though fully inflated balloon. One of the nice men let her pull the handle on the burner, launching a 15 foot plume of white hot fire into the air. I had never wanted to ride in a hot air balloon before. Too much risk of falling, burning, and exploding all at once. But now that I’ve seen the burner up close and in action, I still don’t want to ride in a hot air balloon. After double mushroom and swiss burgers at Grandma’s Saloon we toddled up around the bay and into the Fond-du-Luth Casino. We lost $9.89 there, but we now possess a slip of paper worth 11 cents, good for our next trip back -- which will be soon, because Duluth has a number of things I won’t miss during the holiday season. What kind of things, you may ask?

JUST TRUFFLES
by David Scheller
Two things are called truffles. One is the fruiting body of the subterranean Ascomycete fungus, a lumpy black nugget which pigs are trained to snout out in exchange for small treats. The other is a delightful ball of ganache dusted in cocoa powder or dipped in molten chocolate. The latter is called a truffle because it resembles the former in appearance only. It has at no point during its creation anything to do with fungi or pigs. The finest chocolate truffles in the world are made by Just Truffles at 1363 Grand Ave, St. Paul.

Now celebrating its 35th year since its doors first opened, Dakota originally started out in St. Paul where they hosted jazz exclusively. They relocated to Minneapolis and expanded their focus in 2003: Jazz still enjoys its limelight, but blues, country, folk, and other acts that defy classification perform on Dakota’s stage just as well. Dakota’s layout breathes intimacy. The stage, front and center, is barely elevated, a simple platform for musicians embellished only by a brick wall with a blue neon sign declaring “Dakota” behind it. The restaurant spans around the stage, providing nearly every

Holidays the Thrift Store Way One of the best things about the holidays is that they are an excuse to craft (as if you needed an excuse). This is the time of year where we break out the sewing machine or get our hands extra, extra gluey. You
can harness that enthusiasm for everything DIY into a holiday party of your own. Invite people over to work on a project en masse and bring

Alternative Holiday Parties
by Liz Walker
Another day, another holiday party -- this time of year can get a little overwhelming! Between work and family obligations, there's always another thing to get done and another place you needed to be ten minutes ago. By this point, we've all done more cookie exchanges and stale potlucks than we care to remember. Why not take a break from boring cocktail parties, corporate dinners, and being nagged at by your Great-Aunt Maude to spend some time with people you enjoy on your own terms?
Make this year count by planning something special and perhaps a little out of the ordinary.

Beat yolks in a separate bowl until they drip from the beater in a thick, bright yellow ribbon. Now pour the egg white mixture into the yolks and beat with an electric mixer until nicely combined, about 3 minutes. Using the bowl you will serve the eggnog in, beat the cream until it barely holds soft peaks. With the mixer running at medium speed, slowly add the beaten egg mixture, then the cognac, rum and milk.
