training camp this year and has earned a reputation for trying to improve his already considerable skills as much as he can. World-reigning rushing champion Adrian Peterson is determined to break Emmitt Smith’s career rushing record this year. Running back Peterson deserves it after the grueling training regimen he’s been on, a daily three and a half hour combination of sprinting, heavy lifting, swimming, boxing and more which if administered as a punishment would probably violate the Geneva Conventions. Harrison Smith may just be the most effective and adaptable safety in the league, and on June 6th, Smith signed a five-year contract extension worth $51.25 million making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL. Despite missing Weeks 12, 14, and 15 last year due to a knee injury, the juggernaut still recorded 66 tackles, 2 interceptions, and a touchdown. He was the interception leader the year before as well. “Really, the number one thing is helping the Vikings win and get to the Super Bowl,” said Smith in a 2013 interview. That’s a well-held priority for a man playing at his level.

Of course the gravest concern on the minds of those who cheer “Skol!” is Teddy Bridgewater’s tragic injury. When our quarterback dislocated his knee and suffered a complete tear of his ACL in August, it effectively ended his entire 2016 season. Fortunately, Bridgewater is expected to make a full recovery, but his absence puts the spotlight on quarterback Sam Bradford who was only just acquired from the Eagles. Bradford has the pedigree of a great, having won the Heisman Trophy in 2008 after throwing for 4,720 years and 50 touchdowns, making him one of only eight players to do so in addition to being first draft pick. Bradford will have some familiar faces around him in Minnesota, having played with Peterson for the University of Oklahoma in 2008. He was also backed by up our quarterback Shaun Hill when they played together for the Rams in 2014.

shopdinelive.net Arts and Gardening Classes The arboretum also holds a great variety of different art classes. From sketching bees to watercolors, to crafting an eco-print scarf, make sure to regularly visit www.arboretum.umn.edu/artsclasses to see what they have to offer. Sign up as early as you can, as space is limited and classes can fill up quickly. They also offer gardening classes, (more information at www.arboretum.umn.edu/gardeningclasses) such as home landscaping, caring for houseplants through the winter, and tree pruning. Admission to the arboretum is included in the registration fee.

Auxiliary Fall Harvest Sale Another fun event is the Auxiliary Fall Harvest Sale. You have two opportunities to attend, both Saturday, September 24th from 9am4pm and Sunday the 25th from 11am-4pm. Featured are one of a kind nature gift items created by Auxiliary members; items include flower arrangements, wreaths, greeting cards and more. The event is located in the Snyder Building Auditorium, with all proceeds go to the Arboretum. This is a great opportunity to chip away at your holiday shopping! Most major credit cards are accepted. Also, be sure to visit the Oswald Visitor Center to buy a $2.00 Quilt Raffle Ticket to try to win this year’s quilt “Old Fashioned Summer Garden.” The raffle will be held at 2:00 in the Visitor Center on Saturday the 24th.

A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words If you enjoy photography, one of the best times to take pictures of the beauty outdoors is the “golden hour.” It’s that sweet spot just as the sun is setting when everything is cast in the golden glow of the end of day. But no matter when you visit, be sure to take a few moments and just feel yourself within nature. The stillness, the gentle power of the swaying trees, the independent beauty of a solitary flower, whatever moves you. The busy of life and work and schedules removes us from the awesome wonder of the natural world, and the arboretum is a perfect place to find ourselves moved once again by something bigger than us.

Cowboy Jack’s is close to Sneaky Pete’s and The Pourhouse. It is a big bar with a beautiful relaxing patio and is large enough to relax in and meet new people. The music isn’t overwhelmingly loud, so it’s easy to hold conversations. Not to mention they have a mechanical bull people can ride. Cowboy Jack’s is a kind of bar that appeals to people of all ages and is a great place to go to after a long work week.

My dad pronounced the jelly “pretty good,” which is something coming from a man who rarely gives a compliment, while I was happy to dig into fresh apple butter, a rare treat in midsummer.

Honeycrisp Apples - A Minnesota Classic But now it is apple season for real and our options for fresh, local apples are plentiful. Among them is the Honeycrisp, a large, juicy dappled red apple whose origins are also very close to home; it was

a homegrown success since its release in 1991. In 2006, it became the Minnesota state fruit. Crispy and sweet-tart, Honeycrisp apples ripen evenly, usually between September 15 and October 5, and hold well on the tree. This feature makes them an ideal fruit for pickyour-own orchards. Researcher David Bedford, who is credited with creating the Honeycrisp, explained that the cells of the Honeycrisp are about twice the size of the cells in other apple varieties, which makes for a crisp, pleasing texture. The Honeycrisp’s recent growth in popularity

has driven up its price. As more people have discovered this name-brand apple, production has not kept pace with demand. Since it takes five or six years from the time a tree is planted until the time it produces apples in large quantities, consumers can expect at least several more years of premium prices for the Honeycrisp. But with so many varieties of fall apples to choose from, I typically choose apples that sell closer to a dollar a pound, such as Haralson, Cortland, Regent, McIntosh or Paula Red. With an agreed framework for the construction of this stadium, we are confident that working with the community, our local and state partners and with one another, we can complete the process necessary to bring MLS to Minnesota.” Many fans were excited as well to learn that the club will not be changing its identity. As the move into MLS advances, the team will remain Minnesota United FC. This was happily accepted as Minnesotan soccer fans have had to deal with several club name

changes in the past. After being the Kicks, the Strikers, the Thunder, and the Stars, the present name has been written in stone. It is also worth noting that Minnesota has never had a top-league soccer franchise of any name. The United are no slouches either, regularly finishing the season in the top five.

opportunity for potential big name signings. This will only help the club grown its fan base and make every match worth watching. With the enthusiasm behind the stadium proposal and the official MLS announcement, it would be hoped that the positive waves would carry onto the field. If they can gain momentum, and get positive results from their strong striker Christian Ramirez, they will have little trouble making entry to the final season tournament. Though the club is moving up they must continue to battle and prove themselves worthy of their accreditation.

THE RYDER CUP

by David Scheller

In the 1890’s Samuel Ryder combined two simple notions and became rich as the result. One was that the working class didn’t have very much money, the other was that they only had weekends off. Not very groundbreaking stuff, in retrospect, but when Ryder started selling packets of seeds for a penny each to be delivered on Saturdays it quickly catapulted him into success.

Ryder was more than a savvy businessman. He was a father, a politician,

Booya Cook-off got started, he recalled a day some 30-odd years ago when he and a friend were talking about starting an event in their town. They settled on booya, and he said, “Let’s have a South Saint Paul booya cook-off.” His friend said, “Let’s make it a competition for the whole county.” But that got Books thinking, why not go all the way and host the world championship cook-off? And that’s how the South Saint Paul World Championship Booya Cook-Off title originated back in 1982, though the name does seem a bit grandiose since the cooks are still all local. Books said that Green Bay did take issue with their use of the term “world championship” and challenged them to a cooking duel one day when the Vikings played the Packers. The duel never did take place, Books admitted.

shopdinelive.net What is Booya Anyway

?

He also admitted that he has never learned how to make booya himself. But he’s expecting ten or eleven booya cooks to compete in this year’s cookoff, which makes it sound like there’d be no shortage of booya in South Saint Paul come Booya Sunday. But not everyone who came last year got the booya they were waiting for. North Saint Paul firefighters prepared a total of 510 gallons of booya in 2015 but sold out in less than an hour.

WITH BOOYA, YOU’VE GOT MEAT HANGING OVER THE SIDE “Do you know the difference between booya and a bowl of soup or stew?” Books asked. “With booya, you’ve got meat hanging over the side.” The meat is simmered in large pots with dried beans – simmered long and slow until the meat falls off the bone. Then a variety of vegetables are added to those 40- to 80-gallon pots and the cooking continues for a few hours more. Recipes vary but typically include potatoes, onions, carrots, tomatoes and rutabagas. The spices used vary by cook as well, and the exact combination tends to be a well-kept secret.

Places to Booya If you’ve never had booya, maybe this is the year to give it a try. Below is a list of some of the places where booya is for sale this fall in the Twin Cities. You’ve got more than a month of Sundays – and a couple of Saturdays – to get you some booya.

Bring along a gallon sized container if you’d like to take some home to freeze and enjoy later. The times listed below are when selling begins; ending time can be unpredictable. Some places may run out within an hour or two, so if you’ve got your heart set on booya, don’t dilly dally.

Creativity for a Younger Spirit by Tara Massan

Have you ever met someone who is well beyond their youthful years, but embodied the spirit of a teenager? What about meeting someone who plays like they’re 20, but is actually over 50? Do you ever wonder how they have maintained a youthful spirit throughout the years?

The secret:

creativity.

Creativity provides value to our lives and unconventional means of expressing our inspired self. Now, I’m not insisting that you go out and aim to be a world-class painter, although that would be amazing. I’m asserting that finding a creative outlet in your life affords you the ability to reclaim your imagination and youthful spirit. Here are some benefits when you decide to incorporate more creativity into your life:

1. Self-Expression

It is rumored that creativity is the path to authenticity. When we create, we dive in deep and explore our thoughts and beliefs. Essentially, the more we create the more we discover.

2. Stress Relief

The act of creating, no matter what you’re making, is meditative in its own right. When we make time to use our hands, minds, and energy to do something we love, we improve our lives by enriching it with experiences that provide value.

3. Exploring and Re-igniting Your Imagination

Remember the days when your imagination ran wild? Have you wondered where your imagination has slipped off to? Creativity allows us to tap back into our imagination and dream wild and free like we once used to as children.

4. Problem-Solving Skills

By making creativity a habit, you’re better able to tap into your youthful and artistic side when you face an obstacle. This mindset can provide a novel and innovative approach to solving problems.

5. Personal Freedoms

Creativity: There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Whatever endeavor you pursue, the act of creating allows you to interact with the world and yourself without judging. A creative spirit is a spirit that does not age. It is a spirit that is bursting full of life and is ready and willing to explore and try new things. Embrace your unique, creative self and watch your spirit liven up a bit.

is occurring in two major ways: color palette and furniture. You can always count on Pantone to set the stage for new trends when it comes to color. We love pairing Pantone’s rose quartz & serenity (a luscious pale pink and pale blue) with a spirited pop of color. Unusual combinations, such as pale pink with vibrant green, command attention and please the eye in an unfamiliar and interesting way. These color combinations allude to the upcoming trend of 70’s and 80’s Palm Spring influence on furniture and styling by pairing pastels with neon colors. The 50’s and 60’s made way for well-designed, streamlined furniture. A more undone and relaxed feel to socializing in the 70’s brought furniture that followed suit. The 70’s and 80’s answer - boxy, low, oversized lounge furniture. Palm Springs Modern will present a new twist on interiors and provide a surge of energy through color and a dose of leisure through furniture.

GEOMETRICS: Moving away from acute angles and sharp forms, geometrics will be articulated in a more graphic and organic manner while broadening their application. Encaustic (a.k.a. cement) tiles have quickly come to dominate the design industry. The striking patterns created by these tiles make for a very personal design expression and serve as a beautiful focal element. DARK & MOODY: The clean, white kitchen has had a strong hold on the world of design for some time now. Never to be left stagnant, top designers have turned to dark and moody. Lake Calhoun vs. Lake Harriet As another Minneapolis summer comes to a wistful conclusion, locals inevitably reflect on the season with a review of all the wonderful warm weather activities. Things we take for granted in July become

cherished memories in September and October as the looming winter approaches. Minnesotans, I’m convinced, treasure their sun-sheathed days more than citizens of any other state. The soul-suffocating cold that surrounds us for six months gives rise to an appreciation for warmth that Arizonans, for instance, simply can’t fathom. Likewise, despite having what feels like nine minutes of blissful sunshine per year, we’re also one of the healthiest and most active metro areas in America. We should be proud of that.

EXP LORE DOWNTOWN LIVING

by Mark Remme, Minneapolis Downtown Council

See Downtown Like Never Before Sept 17 at Explore Downtown Living

This is the new scene in Downtown Minneapolis is no longer just a location for work. For approximately 40,000 people in 2016, downtown is home. More and more are choosing to live in the downtown area, not only Millennials looking to shorten their commutes but also empty nesters who are downsizing and wanting to be steps away from entertainment and dining options you can’t find anywhere else. Both groups—and those in between— are interested in seeing what the residential lifestyle is like here in our city’s core.

That’s where Explore Downtown Living comes in. Explore Downtown Living takes place Saturday, September 17 from 10 am to 5 pm. It is a free event open to all ages that offers tours of 30 different residential properties. Participants sign up at www. exploredtliving.com, pick up their official Field Guide at their first location they visit (or in advance at any Whole Foods location), and begin an a la carte tour of downtown visiting only the properties and neighborhoods they’re interested in. Now in its fifth weekend since its first run in May 2015, Explore Downtown Living has helped 3,000

people tour 11,600+ apartment units in just five total days. This event is part of the Minneapolis Downtown Council’s Intersections: The Downtown 2025 Plan’s development committee, which is focused on helping increase the downtown residential population to 70,000 by the year 2025. More residents creates a more vibrant, consistently compelling experience for all who live, work, play and explore downtown, and Explore Downtown Living offers a free and fun way to experience all five downtown neighborhoods in one day. Stop by residential communities in the Central Business District, East Town (Downtown East/Mill

mobile-friendly web map (www.exploredtliving.com/map). Park for free ad designated Explore Downtown Living locations (www.exploredtliving.com/parking), and enjoy more than two dozen partner offers from local businesses that are part of the event. Restaurants, bars, fitness centers, salons and more are offering promotions and freebies for those who stop by and present their Explore Downtown Living Field Guide. The full list can be found at www.exploredtliving.com/ partner-offers. All residential properties are asked to answer questions but not solicit tenants, so you won’t be signed up for any mailing lists or asked for contact information unless you are interested in learning more about that particular building. Enjoy tours of residential units, fitness centers, party rooms, roof decks and more, all while getting to know these downtown neighborhoods and checking out what might fit you best.

September 17th!

Don’t just see the sights. Live them. Sign up for Explore Downtown Living today and see what neighborhood and property works best for you.

DIY Natural Dog Products

by Rachelle Gordon

According to a study from the American Pet Products Association, consumers in the United States spend nearly $60 billion per year on their pets. This averages out to about $1,641 per dog - that’s a lot of kibble! Fortunately, there are many different pet-related DIY projects that can be made with common household goods. For a little inspiration, check out our list of paw-some DIY natural dog products.

Peanut Butter Banana Biscuits This super simple dog treat recipe will have your pup grinning from ear to ear - and it only needs three ingredients! Combine ½ cup peanut butter with one large, ripe banana in a large bowl, mashing up the mixture into a chunky batter. Grind 1 ½ cups uncooked oatmeal and stir into the batter, reserving about one tablespoon to dust onto the counter. Roll the dough out to ¼” thickness, using your favorite cookie cutters to create shapes. Place cookies onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for around 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Remember to cool completely before offering to your four-legged friend!

Lemon Spot Treatment Despite our best efforts as pet parents, accidents can and will happen. Many conventional stain and odor removers contain toxic ingredients - and often cost a pretty penny. Make your own natural spot treatment using one cup white vinegar, one cup distilled water, one tablespoon salt, and lemon essential oil. Combine the first two ingredients in a spray bottle, shaking lately to mix. Add ten drops of the oil to a tablespoon of salt, and then add to the bottle. Tighten the cap and spray when needed, allowing the treatment to sit for around ten minutes before dabbing up with a clean cloth.

Lavender and Citrus Flea Repellent Fleas are an unwelcome nuisance in any household, but the chemicals on some flea collars can be harmful - especially for young children. Create a natural repellent for both dogs and cats using only four ingredients. Place two cups of water in a small saucepan, adding one lemon sliced and one tablespoon dried lavender. Simmer on low for around 30 minutes and then allow to cool completely. Strain the liquid into a squirt bottle, adding two tablespoons of alcohol-free witch hazel. Store leftovers in the refrigerator to keep the solution fresh.

Water Bottle Dog Toy Since the majority of dogs rip stuffed animals and ropes to shreds within mere minutes of receiving them, there’s really no point in buying them. Upcycle a discarded water bottle and a lonely sock into a great DIY toy instead! Cut the foot off of the sock, leaving a tube of material - make sure to take the size of the bottle into account. Place the bottle inside of the sock and tie the ends with twine, removing the excess. Make sure to supervise pets when playing with chew toys to ensure they don’t eat the components.

Build a Literacy-Friendly Neighborhood…

BECAUSE BOOKS ARE BETTER WHEN THEY ARE SHARED

by Anita Dualeh

This past spring there was a Little Free Library giveaway, and I wrote about why our front yard would be a good place for one: we’ve got kids of all ages loitering nearby every school-day morning, and most walk past again after getting off the bus at the end of the school day. Many of the kids have limited access to books in their homes. Because books at home are a strong predictor of academic success, this Little Free Library would have the potential to improve the academic attainment of lots of kids. So we came home from the Little Free Library Festival with one of the volunteer-built micro-libraries.

Pass out books instead of candy during trick-or-treating. Thanks to my husband and a neighbor with the right tools, the Little Free Library was installed in short order. We planned a grand opening, passed out invitations, and then just before it was time to start, I walked down the row of apartments on our street and invited those who were playing or watching kids play outdoors to come to the party in our yard. We talked about books and I shared information about the public library’s summer reading program. I read Inside This Book: (are three books) by Barney Saltzberg. I had selected it because of its kid appeal and because of the last line in the book, “Because books are better when they are shared.”

N O I T A N I T S E D T S O M L A SHOPPING - ZIMMERMAN

Just beyond the outer edge of the suburbs lies a hidden gem: the eclectic, one-of-a-kind stores on Fremont Street in Zimmerman. Think antique store meets shabby chic meets Minnesota handicrafts, all-encompassing home decor, kitchen wares, wall art, and clothing. Located just off of North 169 past Elk River, these shops are starred on the maps of cabin-bound weekenders and urban dwellers looking for that perfect unique find. Apple trees are scattered among the yards of the old houses, now redesigned to host each shop, all within walking distance from one another.

Ramshackled Treasures Our first stop was to Ramshackled Treasures. Located in the oldest house in Zimmerman, built in 1895, Ramshackled welcomes you with an open porch displaying white washed picture frames, an old refurbished chandelier, and hand-painted inspirational wall art. Inside, you are greeted with the soft smell of pine, presumably from one of the upcycled pieces of furniture. Each room is decorated with a different theme, all cohesively neutral in their palette of whites, browns, and blacks. Distressed shelves and dressers, dishtowels and potholders with the state of Minnesota stitched onto the front, and local handmade goat’s milk soaps and lotions are just a few of the items available.

Sassy Bean Boutique We crossed the street to Sassy Bean Boutique. This shop takes more of a colorful, upcycled approach. Sets of antique collectibles, vintage liquor decanters, artisan jewelry, purses made of old books, and things that might be called “man gifts” like old tool and tackle boxes. Signs that offer personalization and custom orders are scattered throughout the two floors. For the passionate Minnesotan resident, a variety of Minnesota wall art is included in almost every room. A room upstairs is devoted mostly to children’s room decor, a heaven for an enthusiastic grandmother.

Zo Chic Boutique We were lucky to be visiting during an open weekend at Zo Chic, a traveling boutique with a brick and mortar shop located on Fremont in Zimmerman. The small shop was well-decorated and cleanly designed, with strong contrast between their white brick walls and brightly colored dresses, tops and accessories. They make appearances at different locations around the Twin Cities in their Fashion Truck, as well as home parties for those looking for a more intimate shopping experience. Their hours are limited, but their Facebook page showcases their line and promotions.

Nelson Nursery Aside from what you’d expect from a nursery, such as perennials, shrubs, potting supplies, and lawn ornaments, Nelson’s Nursery has a great gift and accessory section. If you’re looking to bolster your gnome garden, find a set of salt and pepper shakers in the shape of piglets, or a floral travel mug, you’ve come to the right place. It’s a little off the beaten path, but it’s worth the stop.

Wild Poppies Massive oak trees surrounded the house, and as we stepped into the front porch it felt as if we went back to a time when those trees were just saplings. Collections of vintage dishes and patio furniture decorated the glassed-in porch. Even the smell felt real, a sweet sort of dustiness. A beautifully refinished dining room table sprawled in the front room with the most darling set of red floral drinking glasses and pitcher displayed upon a mirrored tray. The kitchen, my favorite room, was organized by color and boasted set after set of orange, green, and yellow translucent glass goblets, orange juicers, and butter dishes. A few newer items mingled among the old, creating a realistic feel that made you wonder what it would be like to have these wonderful things in your own kitchen.

shopdinelive.net

Zimmerman Floral and Gifts Zimmerman Floral and Gifts, across the street and around the corner from Wild Poppies, is a one-stop-shop for gifts. Aside from floral arrangements, candy bar bouquets and balloons, the shop smells of sweet greens and candles. China teacups, antiques arranged with silk flowers, and a surprising variety of clothing are arranged along the walls, and a (real) sleeping Chihuahua kept us company while we browsed.

The Shoppes on Fremont After a quick lunch at Santa Lucia’s of paninis, coffee, and ice cream, we stopped in at The Shoppes on Fremont. The main floor feels similar to the rest of the shops and is always worth the browse, but for me, the basement is the main attraction. If you’ve ever wondered where those crafty people on Pinterest find their old wooden furniture for their projects, look no further. It was here, among the old wooden crates and chairs, that I stumbled across what I’ve been looking for the last few months: an old bar cart. It was rusty and needed new wheels, and it was the perfect fall restoration project.

The Tattooed Lady This shop isn’t just for getting inked, though if you are, it’s one of best parlours in the outer twin cities. It’s also a collective art gallery that allows members to not only showcase their work, but be involved the local art community, acquire sales experience at the store, and meet their customers face to face.

AshleyTaylor Salon and Spa What better way to end an afternoon of shopping than a mini makeover? Offering a variety of massages, facials, makeup applications (and lessons!), body treatments and nail services, AshleyTaylor is the icing on the cake. We ended our day relaxed and satisfied. We hope to return on November 5th for “Ladies on the Loose,” an event put on every other month by the community of shops. It incentivises visiting every store, collecting each store’s stamp on a punch card to enter to win prizes. We didn’t need much incentive today, but it was just what we needed: a day away to unwind, shop, and find a little inspiration. September 15 - October 14, 2016 |

Even though I have (barely) survived nearly 30 very brutal Minnesota winters throughout my life, I still haven’t been able to decide what’s the worst thing about winter, other than it is just absolutely horrific. They are fairly easy to put on, and when it comes time to remove them, you don’t have to worry about any damage to the frames or sills. Bubble wrap can also work really well for insulation, too.

thinks about you. Yeah, you may want to fit in and be accepted by your friends, spouse, or roommates, so you may decide to change some of your behaviors to feel more accepted within your peer group. But that is a decision you need to make, rather than having someone else insist that you need to change. What I am really talking about is that incessant worry we have that manifests itself as anxiety, an upset stomach, insomnia, nail biting, etc. The niggling fear that we don’t measure up. That we are not good enough. That our friends wouldn’t like us if they really knew us. That our bosses don’t like us or don’t think we do a good enough job. We worry constantly about what others think of us. Now, let’s take that nagging doubtful voice out of our heads and replace it with oh, I don’t know, anything else as long as it’s positive. If you

can imagine living your life without worrying about what other people think about you, can you envision your life improving? Of course you can! Think of all the energy that you are now wasting worrying about what other people think. (By the way, what does all of that self-doubt and worry accomplish? It doesn’t change the outcome of anything.) If you can repackage that energy into positive self-affirmations or simply use the energy for healthy pursuits, can you anticipate how your life will calm down and you can begin to truly enjoy life? This is the freedom we all seek!
