Americans are expected to spend $75.8 billion on back-to-school purchases this year, according to the National Retail Federation. That turns out to be over $600 per family on average. If that sounds high to you, consider the following suggestions for keeping your back-to-school shopping below average.

Take Stock of What You Already May Have Check your home office supplies or any stash of school items you’ve picked up for a great deal at some point or another. The same goes for clothing – find out what your child already has, including any packed away clothes from an older sibling, or cousin, for example. Then make a list of what supplies and clothes each child needs. Remember that you don’t need to do all the clothes shopping right away. There may be better deals on clothes after the back-to-school rush is over.

Personally, this can be a difficult situation, should you not know how to approach your server or the restaurant appropriately. I am a gluten free kinda gal, who also happens to be a vegetarian. So when I do have the pleasure of dining out, I try my hardest not to be that one customer that is difficult or has unrealistic expectation. Trust me, this came with practice. First things first, be thankful you have the opportunity to dine out. With that mindset, you can plan ahead for a great meal to enjoy!

Regardless if you’re on the serving side of the equation or the dining side of the equation, be sure to keep all forms of communication open and honest. FALL FASHION preview Summer isn’t over yet, but trendsetters are already looking ahead to the fall fashion season to see what’s on deck. Fashion Weeks from New York to Milan typically occur in late winter or early spring, yet always feature a sneak peek of potential trends for later in the year. This fall, prepare to see more

Rachelle Gordon is known for her savvy shopping ways. By seeking what’s trending in fashion via social media and people watching,
bold prints, high waists, and lots of gold. If you want to be ahead of the curve, read on for some of the most noteworthy fall fashion looks.

looks - with an update here and there. High-waisted skirts and

actual high-end cost. Each month,
designers are doubling down on the flattering-on-everyone cut.
Rachelle will discuss what’s hot in fashion around the Twin Cities and ways to score haute couture looks for less.
Prepare to see pencil skirts with lots of pleats and wide-legged wool and denim pants. In addition, the elegant furs of yester-year have been given a modern twist. Faux-fur coats and vests will definitely be in this season, along with matching fur-accented bags and booties. Traditional-looking pieces are present but so are wild pinks and purples. Cow hide, which often is used in pants, shoes, and bags is also big this fall - but again, sticking to a faux facade. Think blazers, messenger bags, and of course, the actual boot - which is a fall staple that will never go out style.
Stand Out Above the Crowd In an age of Insta-famous looks, it can be difficult to feel original. But it doesn’t take extreme measures to show off your flashy side - it’s a piece of cake. Bold, geometric patterns are big in the upcoming season - literally. Try the look out by adding a pair of large diamond-shaped earrings or a long, trapezoidal statement ring. Geometry will also be present on everything from dresses to scarves, meaning it will be easy to try this trend out in many different ways - even if you have to shout out loud!
10 | ShopDineLive.net | August 15-September 14, 2016
Paisley prints are also hot this season, mixing Boho style with flattering patterns for all body types. An off-the-shoulder dress over black leggings can be worn with boots, flats, or heels, making it a perfect piece for any occasion. Added with a floppy hat or a leather shoulder bag, this statement-making look works day and night. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different prints and colors - all of the old rules have gone out the window, so why not try something new?
Metallic Mania While the term “heavy metal” may conjure thoughts of headbanging and 80s hair, this season it’s all the rage - in terms of accessorizing that is. Rose gold eyeshadow, copper bangles, and silver hair jewelry are all super hot, almost as if the fires that forged these minerals are within our sights. A sweep of loose metallic powders across the lids or cheeks will bring a certain pop to any look, while a long ring (think the kind Jojo the Bachelorette wears) is the perfect accent for both work and play. If you want to feel like a rock star but are concerned that you can’t pull off

adding a touch here and there will definitely make a difference. Add a pop to a simple blouse or blazer by wearing a statement brooch on the color - look for vintage pieces at the local thrift shop for a touch of classic elegance that won’t break the bank.

Waconia and wine. It sounds like an unlikely pairing. Yet there are three successful wineries within ten miles of each other, just 40 miles west of downtown Minneapolis. The oldest is Parley Lake Winery, started in 2004. When Lin Deardorff planted grapes in his apple

orchard near Parley Lake, he wasn’t really thinking about being a pioneer. He and winemaker Steve Zeller were just excited by the possibilities opened up by the University of Minnesota’s introduction of winter-hardy grapes. By happy coincidence, the Waconia area has just what grapes need: rolling topography; sunny, southfacing slopes; good soil; and lakes that actually help reduce the effects of cold Canadian winds.

Waconia is also at the right latitude, sitting squarely on the same parallel as the vineyards of France and the California/Oregon border. The climates are similar, although Minnesota is somewhat drier.

An annual plant, wild rice grows from seeds that have fallen into the water the previous autumn.
ca sp ll f ec or ial s!
Up until the 1960s, all wild rice grown in Minnesota was truly wild, and our state produced half of the global market supply, most of it hand-harvested. Once cultivated wild rice was introduced, machine-harvesting

the price of real wild rice. This hasn’t been good news for the Ojibwe, who still harvest the native aquatic grass two per canoe, one operating the forked push pole and the other knocking rice into the canoe with a pair of wooden flails. The

suggests a soak method for cooking wild rice that greatly reduces the cooking time, though it does require planning ahead: rinse a half cup of wild rice and soak in three cups of water overnight. Drain and add the soaked wild rice to a saucepan with three cups of water and a half teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain the rice and use in your favorite recipe. Wild rice is quite versatile and a welcome addition to breakfast, lunch or dinner. For a fiber-rich start to the day, heat cooked wild rice with enough cream or almond milk to make a porridge. Add dried or fresh fruit of your choice and a sprinkling of toasted almonds. Wild rice makes a tasty salad with the addition of some olive oil and your favorite chopped vegetables and/or fruit. Consider a combination of chopped celery and apple, dried cranberries or apricots and cashews. Or try cucumber, tomatoes, bell peppers, parsley, and red or green onion with salt and red pepper flakes to taste. For a classic side dish, cook half a pound of wild rice in water till tender and then mix in a pound of mushrooms that have been sautéed in butter. Alternatively, stir cooked wild rice to your favorite potato or mushroom soup recipe. Add it to a frittata or turn it into stuffing for fish or pork chops. However, you decide to prepare it (or buy it prepared), plan to eat local this month by enjoying a meal

The
The Minnesota State Fair. Just hearing the words conjures so many memories of exciting foods, unique gifts found at the International Bazaar, and that indescribable State Fair smell of deep fryers, sweet hay and summer heat. It’s an event that seems to take forever to arrive, and then it’s over before you know it. With new foods each year, it’s hard to be able to experience all that there is to offer at this Great Minnesota Get-Together.
SPAM Sushi. Sushi has taken the nation by storm over the last few years, so
Old Traditions, New Flavors The State Fair is known for corn dogs, cheese curds, kettle corn but it seems that with each summer comes new treats to try. Every year we get more creative with what we put on a stick, deep fry, or dip in chocolate. There are 32 new foods on the menu for the fair this year, and this is just a sneak peek at what we have to look forward to:
this combination shouldn’t come as a surprise to us. SPAM sushi is made with grilled SPAM, sushi rice, fried egg, and wasabi, all rolled in dried seaweed. If you’re new to the sushi scene, this may be a nice way to dip your toes into the water. Even if you’re an expert, there’s no shame in having an open mind and enjoying this “traditional American meat meets East” combination. SPAM Sushi can be found at Sushi Rolls in the Warner Coliseum.

KIDS BE
by Anita Dualeh
All too often parents carry their busyness around as a badge of honor, and much of that busyness is in theory for the sake of their children. But if they’re honest with themselves, many parents may feel as though they are running on a treadmill, trying to keep up with the pace of those around them and worried that they could be depriving their children of future success if they jump off that treadmill. They fear they may disadvantage their child for life if they don’t sign him or her up for a wide range of classes and activities in order to build every skill and aptitude their child could possibly need for success in life.

Your non-negotiable truths are defined as truths that define your boundaries, your dreams, what you stand for and what you do not stand for. Getting crystal clear and clearly defining your non-negotiable truths will help you form the foundation for your life. Often we end up learning what our non-negotiable truths are when our backs are up against the wall. Let’s try to prevent this by clearly stating non-negotiables before we find ourselves in an extreme situation. You can start discovering your non-negotiable truths by first exploring

the things you do not stand for in life. For example, here are some

things I do not stand for in my life: •
Negativity
•
Dishonesty
•
Disingenuous Relationships
•
Superficial Expectations
It’s not that difficult to sit down and call upon the things you do not stand for in life, or what you won’t tolerate. Now that we have that mess out of the way, let’s write down the things we do stand for in life. It can look something like this: •
Love
•
Courage
•
Resilience
•
Curiosity
•
Intellectual Stimulation
By declaring what you do stand for in life and taking it a step further by expanding upon it, you end up with your non-negotiable truths. For example: If you stand for love, then reexamine your life and curate your actions, thoughts, and words to always be in line with your truth as it relates to love.

The roots of your non-negotiable truths lie within the pillars of what you stand for in life. When you define what you stand for in life and get clarity on your non-negotiable truths, you can begin moving forward with the intention for years to come.

TWIN TRAILS — HIKING, BIKING, AND MORE
by Steve Johnson
A series exploring the best outdoor experiences in the Twin Cities
THE SAINT PAUL CLASSIC: ROLL ‘ROUND THE SAINTLY CITY This 32-mile bike loop anchors the venerable St. Paul Classic bike tour in and around St. Paul, with a mansion-lined boulevard to parkway pedaling and stunning river valley views. Cruise traffic-free around the city, with succulent gastro, delights at rest stops and live music at the finish line. THE RIDE Set aside September 11th this year for a full day of riding and revelry at the St. Paul Classic. This is the landmark Grand Round course and the event’s popular mid-distance loop. Start at the University of St. Thomas and ride south on Mississippi River Blvd., with great views of Ol’ Miss and its wooded bluffs. Pass overlooks aplenty to the junction with Highway 5 and follow Shepard Road along the ridge above Crosby Farm Park to I-35E and on to the Samuel Morgan corridor into downtown St. Paul.
28 | ShopDineLive.net | August 15-September 14, 2016
The route hugs the St. Paul harbor and continues along Warner Road to Indian Mounds Park. This was a sacred place for prehistoric Native Americans of the area and the site of nearly forty burial mounds (only six remain) at the top and flanks of the bluff. The original mounds date back over 2,000 years. Visitors today get stellar St. Paul skyline views and from here, the ride route hooks up with the Bruce Vento Trail, traveling north through Swede Hollow to the south shore of Lake Phalen. The 3-mile path around the lake is packed with lakeside views, and some short, punchy hills add flavor if you’re up for a fun side trip.
GET THERE: From I-94, take the CretinVandalia exit and head 1 mile
From Lake Phalen, merge onto Wheelock Parkway for the loop’s trip west. Cruise Wheelock all the way to Lake Como. At the south side of the lake, follow winding Como Lake Drive around to the northern shore, with a nice view across the waves of the elegant Como Dockside pavilion. The path blends into Como Park on rolling hills to the Como Zoo and Majorie McNeely Conservatory.
south to the University of St. Thomas. Park where permitted, or along Summit Avenue and the overlook at the river. Check out bikeclassic.org for all the details and registration.
Established in 1897 with a lineup of three deer, the zoo is Minnesota’s first and a magnet for kids squealing with glee. Originally located on Harriet Island, the zoo moved to Como Park when more animals arrived and the island got crowded. The Conservatory is another must-go Minnesota landmark, bursting at the seams with all manner of eye-popping flowers and unique foliage. The park’s pathways lead away from the zoo, taking Grand Round riders along Como Avenue and past the southern fringe of the state fairgrounds to Raymond Avenue. Head south to reach Pelham Boulevard and the homestretch back to Summit Avenue.
Stay tuned for the next installment of "Twin Trails" in September.

TIPS FOR JUGGLING WORK AND FAMILY BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY IS A JUGGLING ACT FACED BY MANY WORKING PARENTS. Responsibilities to work and family often overlap, and that can make solving the riddle of balancing work and family that much more difficult. Single-income households have decreased dramatically over the last several decades, as escalating costs of living have made it difficult for many families to get by on just one income. But working parents can employ several strategies, both at the office and at home, as they attempt to make the job of juggling commitments to work and family a little less difficult.

The Super Bowl, MLB All-Star Game, Final Four, and an era-spanning array of world-renowned musicians have all taken center stage. Pet
Behaviors & How to
Stop Them by Rachelle Gordon
-
Any pet parent will tell you that their furry friends are like a member o f
the family - but just like your human relatives, no pet is perfect. Incessant licking, destruction, and barking are a few of the annoying pet behaviors that seem nearly impossible to stop. Fortunately, there are humane and effective ways to correct your four-legged friend’s unwanted actions - read on for some expert advice. Unfortunately, we can’t make any promises for your Uncle Rick’s constant pull-my-finger gag.
What’s All The Ruckus?
When a dog or cat is making a lot of noise, there are a couple of typical causes. The first, and more serious, is that the animal is hurt or ill. However, it is far more common for a dog or cat to get loud simply because they want attention. Ensure your pet is wellexercised and has plenty of engaging toys around to keep their minds busy. This will prevent excitement barking when company comes and constant whining when you’re trying to relax for the evening. If noise-making is still an issue, try your best to ignore the animal. When Fluffy finally quiets, give them lots of positive praise

On Saturday, September 10th, hundreds of runners, joggers and walkers will descend upon Burnsville for the 5th Annual Heart of the City 10K, 5K, and 1K races. The event is presented every year to benefit the Twin Cities Boys & Girls Club of America’s Kids Feeding Kids (KFK) program. This initiative helps to get food to area Club youths five nights per week and on school early-release days - times when children are often most at-risk for food security issues. This year’s event is also being billed as a “Run to Remember” - participants are encouraged to dedicate their race to a loved one they have lost.

America, 15.3 million kids under the age of 18 live in food-insecure households, meaning they, “are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.” “What we found was that about 5 o’clock, a lot of kids would leave the Clubs and go home and weren’t getting the nutrition they needed,” Rixmann said in a video about the event. “We see immediate benefits because there are a lot of kids that end of staying at the Club until the Club closes around 8 o’clock or so at night,” Rixmann added. “They’re getting the help they need, whether it’s with school, or learning how to shoot baskets and with that nutrition, it helps them today.”

A Run to Remember This year’s Heart of the City race is dubbed a “Run to Remember,” in honor of loved ones who have passed away. In 2013, Jordan Huver, the daughter of one of the event’s founders and an avid volunteer, tragically passed away in an auto accident. At the 2014 Heart of the City race, Jordan’s mother Trish gathered 130 friends and family members in order to “Run for Jordan” and honor her spirit and dedication to children’s causes. This year’s participants are invited to dedicate their runs to anyone they may have lost and want to remember.

SKIP THE FOOD By far the easiest, you can skip the food altogether and throw a good ol’ fashioned cocktail party. Set up a bar by using a dresser or a kitchen island, and use your kitchen sink as

beer in there. Since consuming alcohol tends to lead to munchies, you can put a few finger food dishes like nuts, cheeses, chips and salsa, or olives on a coffee table or alongside the staged bar area.
REARRANGE YOUR STUFF If you have a small one bedroom or studio apartment, space is very limited. Place bulky furniture in a different area of your apartment, or temporarily move items into your storage locker to create extra space. Typically, when you live in a small apartment, most of the furniture is not against the walls so your home appears to be larger than it actually is. To throw a great party in a small space, you need actual space so you’ll want to move the furniture against the wall and your guests will have room to roam.
SELF-SERVICE If you arrange it so your guests are able to serve themselves beverages or food,

you’ll be able to mingle and hang out with your guests in lieu of running back and forth from the kitchen. Offer the ability to label one’s cup so you only have to use as many cups as you have guests. This makes cleanup a breeze!
REFLECT AND BRING ON THE LIGHT Mirrors are hands down the best eye foolers in town. Whether they’re hung on the wall or placed strategically on the floor, they become your very best friend since they reflect tons of light and create a larger space. Plus, you can play a game to see how many of your friends check themselves out in the mirrors. Seriously, people love looking at themselves. Try it at your next party! Another great trick is to hang lighting from the ceiling or

crown molding, like lanterns or holiday lights. You can also light candles throughout your home to create a lovely ambience.
MAKE IT COMFY Having a small space does not, I repeat DOES NOT, mean you can’t get creative. In fact, this boosts creativity more than having a large space in my opinion. If you lack enough furniture to accommodate your guests to sit, you can place large pillows or bean bag chairs on the floor for your guests to make themselves comfy on.

People really do love having a good dinner party to go to. If you decide you are going to prepare a meal, you will maybe want to consider having the food displayed buffet-style, so your guests will not only be able to serve themselves (which is great for you as the host/ess), but you don’t have to worry about creating a table large enough to accommodate everyone, which opens up the seating area for your company.

FUN TIMES: THE COMMUNITY LAUNDRY ROOM
by Cindy Mennenga
I can hear you groaning in agony at the painful words: Apartment Laundry Room!!! I hear ya. First of all, can I have a show of hands of how many of you like to do laundry under any circumstances? Come on, don’t be bashful. I know there are one or two of you out there! Now, and this is getting fun (for me, anyway) can I get an “Amen!” from you on how much you love, love, love doing your laundry in the community laundry room in your apartment building? Seriously, I lost sleep over this one, pretty much on a weekly basis for years! Lugging a sizeable pile of dirty unmentionables down the hall or up a couple flights of stairs or wherever the laundry
L U X U R Y
room is located, to find out there isn’t a washer available is maddening! So to combat that annoyance, I used to gather up all of my clothes, get them sorted into the proper load, place them in a laundry basket, gather up my coins and laundry detergent and park it all by the door to my apartment. Then I would make a mad dash to the laundry room to scope it out and see if I had a chance of doing my laundry sometime in the next century. If the coast was clear, I would sprint back to my apartment, grab the ginormous piles of smelly laundry and race back to the laundry room and hope nobody beat me to it. Amazingly enough, there

were several times, even with my expert scouting that I still got shut out by someone else who had shuffled in just before me. When that would happen, I wanted to scream!!! When this would occur, I would be crestfallen and, if we’re being honest, mad. I then had the joy of dragging my towering load back to my unit to wait out the interloper and their seemingly takeall-day laundry project. Eventually, I would have the privilege of repeating the process of checking to see if the washers were available again and run back to my apartment and retrieve the

massive mess until I was able to get a turn at the washers.

I guess how long you wait for the rightful owner to attend to their laundry is directly related to how long you would hope someone else would wait for you to remember you have half your wardrobe down the hall balled up in a wet mass. It also depends on how desperately you need to get your laundry done. If you do take someone else’s laundry out of the washer, be prepared for potential payback. If the washer just stopped spinning and you pulled the clothes out seconds later, your actions will not be received kindly. If, on the other hand, you waited an hour or more, I think you are justified. That is just my opinion: nothing more, nothing less.

did this for purely selfish reasons (not to be courteous, although that was a by-product): I didn’t want anybody else thinking for a second that they were touching my stuff. I just got it clean, and I wanted it to stay that way, so I made sure I never gave anyone the opportunity to put their grubby mitts on my clean clothes.
