The Poinsettia The Poinsettia has a unique history, beginning with the Aztecs, who used its milky sap to reduce fevers and its deep color to make dye. It wasn’t until the 1800’s that the Poinsettia became the staple of the Christmas season. It is a beautiful delicate plant that blooms in nature for a short time around Christmas. If you have not experienced the beauty of the Poinsettia, come check them out at our garden center. They are truly an amazing sight to see and we have the best around. Why are Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery’s poinsettias so beautiful you ask? Well, it is because we have an amazing head grower and greenhouse staff taking care of them. We asked the head grower Ron what makes our poinsettias so special.
How long has Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery been growing Poinsettias? Ron Svehla has been growing poinsettias at Lynde Greenhouse for 22 years but Lynde Greenhouse has been growing poinsettias for over 60 years.
What is the trick to growing healthy Poinsettias? The trick is vigilance. Poinsettias require growth regulators, are very sensitive to temperature, and need constant attention to pest control. Poinsettias take a long time to grow and require consistent graphical tracking; plotting actual plant height or development of a crop and comparing this value to target plant height or development over time. What is also unique to how we grow poinsettias is that we use biological control, which is other living organisms, to manage pests. We have adopted a bee friendly approach which consists of using beneficial parasite insects to control the major Poinsettia pests.
How long does it take to grow a poinsettia? We start growing poinsettias the first week of July. That means about 5 months of love and care.
How many varieties of Poinsettias are there? There are over 100 varieties of poinsettias but on average we grow about 20-25 different varieties each year.

Before even lifting a fork, thousands of people across the country will start their holiday with a 5K run on the most popular running day in the country. Turkey Day Runs are held in Minneapolis, Chicago, Miami, Phoenix and Boise. The 27th annual Delta Dental Turkey Day Run Minneapolis kicks off at 8 a.m. on November 24th near Life Time Fitness Target Center. The scenic course takes participants through the streets of downtown Minneapolis—past City Hall, U.S. Bank Stadium, the Guthrie Theater, Gold Medal Park and along the Mississippi River.

LOCAL OrangePUMPKINS and Round For many recipes calling for pumpkin, you first need to make pumpkin puree. Baking or slow cooking pumpkin halves offers the path of least resistance enroute to puree. Try cutting up and peeling a raw pumpkin and you’ll see what I mean -- a thick firm pumpkin is hard to cut, even with a good sharp knife. Peeling is so much easier after cooking, and you don’t need to cut anything after cooking, just scoop the soft pumpkin out of its shell. To make puree, remove the stem and cut the pumpkin in half. You’ll need a strong knife for this. Scoop out the seeds and fibrous innards. A melon baller works well for scraping out the

The first time I’d had pumpkin soup was in Korea. It was a real treat - plenty of pure pumpkin flavor with a subtle sweetness. I remember my Korean students told me it wasn’t difficult to make. But it wasn’t until years later that I looked it up online. Most of the Korean pumpkin soup recipes I found had just four ingredients, and that included pantry staples sugar and salt, which proves that sometimes simple is best. The soup recipe below has been adapted slightly to make use of another local favorite: maple syrup. Go light on the sweetener to avoid a final product that’s cloying. It is all about the pumpkin. Pick a winner of a fresh pumpkin and you’ll end up with a winner of a soup. It’s a treat you can feel good about, one that’s low in calories and high in soluble fiber, vitamin A, and potassium.

• 1 tablespoon rice flour mixed with 2 tablespoons water
• 4-6 tablespoons maple syrup
• Plain yogurt (optional)

In the U.S., November has long been associated with giving thanks. The first recorded harvest celebration took place in Plymouth Colony in November 1621, though harvest celebrations in America most likely predated the arrival of colonists. More than 200 years later, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared the nation would celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on November 26th and that the fourth Thursday in every November thereafter would be an official day of thanksgiving. This was the start of our nation’s official holiday to celebrate and give thanks for the blessings of the past year. Though it is good to pause once a year and reflect on all the reasons we have to be grateful, thankfulness is something we can and should cultivate throughout the entire year. Thankfulness need not be relegated to a single day or a single season. Read on for some compelling reasons to become more grateful all year long - and some simple ways to grow in this area.
Benefits of Gratitude Research has shown that those who are thankful tend to experience less stress and greater happiness. They often have closer friends, happier marriages, healthier hearts and all around improved lives. Two years ago, the Minnesota Timberwolves finished the NBA season with the worst record in franchise history. Right before the start of the 2015 season, the team was struck with the tragic loss of Flip Saunders, the head of basketball operations and a hometown hero. Though the team would show marked improvement from the previous year, interim head coach Sam Mitchell was unable to muster more than 13 additional wins than the previous year. 2016, however, has serious potential to be a breakout year for the Timberwolves. This is due to some serious changes in the head office and serious growth in the young players on the roster.

A Minnesota Thanksgiving As I write this in mid-October, a flock of wild turkeys has surrounded the crabapple tree in my front yard, gobbling little apples like they’re going out of style. Naturally, my thoughts turn to Thanksgiving, and I wonder what crabapple-stuffed turkey would taste like. Fortunately for the turkeys outside my door, I’ll be cooking a domestic bird. But I’ll give it some Minnesota flair. I first saw this recipe years ago in the Star Tribune. It was an immediate hit with my family, and we’ve used it ever since. The nutty flavor of the wild rice blends nicely with the mushrooms, onions and celery. The rice also keeps the bread from becoming too gummy. Sometimes I add

cranberries, crumbled bacon or sausage to the mix for variety.
Wild Rice Stuffing 4 cups cooked wild rice 4 cups dry bread crumbs 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms 3 celery ribs, chopped ¼ cup butter
1 tsp. leaf oregano ½ tsp. crushed leaf sage ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. pepper 1 cup chicken broth
While the wild rice is cooking, sauté the onion, mushrooms and celery in butter. Mix the cooked rice and the bread in a large bowl and add the vegetables. Mix the spices into the chicken broth and pour over the stuffing mixture. Place inside the turkey before roasting or in a separate casserole to bake. Fills a 10-lb. turkey. Cans of Golden Festal pumpkin used to roll off the line at Owatonna Canning Company, just 60 miles south of the Twin Cities, every fall. My mother swore by it. According to the owner of Festal Farms where

the pumpkins were grown, the pumpkin variety that was used had a higher starch content than the pumpkin found in Libby’s, and that made all the difference. Unfortunately, the company was bought out in 1997 and a 2015 article in the Owatonna People’s Press says the Festal brand is no more. I have had good luck using the recipe that used to be on the back of the Festal can and fresh pumpkin. To prepare a pumpkin for use in a pie, take out the seeds (there are nowhere near as many seeds in a pie pumpkin as there are in a jack-o-lantern), cut it into chunks, and bake until you can easily pierce the pumpkin with a fork. Puree the baked chunks in a blender with very little water.

Golden Festal Pumpkin Pie 1 unbaked pastry shell 1 cups of pie pumpkin 3 eggs, slightly beaten 1 cup granulated or light brown sugar ½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. cloves ¼ tsp. nutmeg ¼ tsp. ginger 1 ½ cups evaporated milk
Place the pie shell in a pie plate. Combine eggs, sugar, salt and spices and beat well. Blend in pumpkin. Add milk and beat well. Turn into pastry-lined pie pan. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, then reduce heat and bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes. The pie is done when a knife, inserted in the center, comes out clean.
