a Well-Known brand in Minnesota and Around the World Nordic Ware is a family-owned, American manufacturer of kitchenware products. Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2016, this local company manufactures and markets an extensive line of quality cookware, bakeware, microwave, grilling products, and specialty kitchenware that is distributed worldwide. Nordic Ware serves all segments of the foodservice market, from home cooks to restaurants, bakeries, hotels, caterers, schools and hospitals. The company’s business is firmly rooted in the trust, dedication and talent of its employees, a desire to provide excellence in service to customers and never-ending research into customer needs. An inspirational American success story, Nordic Ware was founded in 1946 by a determined wife, Dotty, and her resourceful husband Dave, newly returned from service in World War II. With only $500 in their pockets, a few good ideas and a desire to create a business of their own, a humble kitchenware company was launched from the basement of their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In the beginning, Nordic Ware’s product line was only a handful of items, all of which were specialty Scandinavian ethnic cookware products—the Rosette iron, Krumkake iron, Platte Panne pan, and the Ebelskiver pan. Undoubtedly, Nordic Ware's most famous item is the Bundt® pan, which can be found in over 70 million households around the world. Introduced in the early 1950s, the Bundt pan rose to worldwide fame when it was used to bake a prize-winning cake in the 1966 17th annual Pillsbury Bake-Off. Baker Ella Helfrich used a Bundt pan for her winning recipe, Tunnel of Fudge Cake. After the bake-off, Pillsbury received more than 200,000 requests for help finding the Bundt pans. In 1971, Pillsbury introduced a line of Bundt cake mixes that continued the nationwide quest for Bundt pans. Pillsbury has since stopped selling Bundt cake mixes, but Nordic Ware now produces a line of gourmet cake mixes. As the pan found its way into the hearts and homes of people everywhere, the Bundt cake has become the quintessential American dessert – one that’s become a tradition for countless gatherings and family celebrations. In recognition of its 60th anniversary, the Bundt pan was given American icon status in the Smithsonian Institution and each year on November 15th we celebrate National Bundt Day. Bundt® is a registered trademark of Nordic Ware, a division of Northland Aluminum Products. It is one of the most recognized brand names in the bakeware industry and likely the most popular baking mold in the world. Today, Nordic Ware is still proudly manufacturing the vast majority of its products in Minneapolis. Nordic Ware’s corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility is located in the suburb of 4  |

Those original Scandinavian products have been joined by hundreds of other items in Nordic Ware’s product offering and each year it adds innovative items to its expansive kitchenware line. Located off of 35W and featuring completely updated apartments and common areas, Bolero is a unique property with so much to offer in the perfect location. Halo Stafford, Area Manager for Pinnacle, explains what makes their incredible apartments on Marquette and 11th Street so amazing.

There is also an indoor party room with a full kitchen that can be used by residents looking to entertain.

As winter begins to settle in on most of the country, many thoughts turn to the holiday season. Turkey, pie, and frost covered window panes. But there are many folks that are preoccupied with other serious business: bowl season. For them, there are no sugar plums dancing just yet. They are the college football fans. If one is not familiar with the level of stress these folks seem to be under, it is understandable. For the outsider, trying to figure out how teams are selected to play in any of these games, let alone win a trophy, can be quite daunting. To begin this discussion one must travel back in time over one hundred years. In 1890, the city of Pasadena in California hosted a parade for a local club. Having adorned their buggies in colorful flowers, they drove through town. It began a tradition of outdoor fun and competition the Tournament of Roses Parade had begun. Ten years later the organizers decided to expand the day by beginning an annual football contest or the tourney. It began with two teams: Michigan and Stanford. That first game ended 49-0 in favor of Michigan. The large margin of defeat may have been the reason that the Rose Committee did not choose to host another game for 14 years. In 1923, the game was taken to a massive new stadium and officially dubbed the Rose Bowl. It has been a News Year's Day fixture ever since. Ten years later, other cities began to take note of the financial benefit of trying to draw winter fans to warmer New Year’s destinations. The Sun

for the New Year With the approach of a new year, thoughts of New Year’s resolutions may come to mind. A good number of people make resolutions; few actually follow through on their good intentions, whether that be to get fit, lose weight, get organized, spend more time with family and friends, or save money. After repeating the cycle of making but not keeping resolutions year in and year out, some people give up on the idea of resolutions completely. But it doesn’t have to be that way. This year, why not set a goal that you’re motivated to achieve? And then commit to taking the steps you’ll need take to make your goal a reality. Pets

SAFEthe

During

Holiday Season

by Rachelle Gordon

The holidays are a time of great joy and merriment, but it can be a dangerous time for pets. Christmas trees, over-sugared kids, and even turkey scraps can all pose a threat to the four-legged members of our families. Read on for tips to keep your furry friends safe this season - you (and your pet) will be glad you did!

Creating a warm and festive atmosphere is a big part of the holidays for lots of families, but it’s vital to keep in mind that Christmas trees and Hanukkah candles may create a problem for pets.

BE PREPARED The most effective way to protect your pet is to be prepared in case of an emergency. Have the phone number and address of both your regular veterinarian and an emergency animal hospital available at all times. Additionally, the ASPCA has a poison control hotline specifically for pets. If you think it’s possible that your animal has gotten into something they shouldn’t, call 1-888-426-4435 immediately (you may have to pay a small fee for the service).

shopdinelive.net DON’T FEED THE ANIMALS For many Americans, the holiday season is all about the rich and delicious foods. It’s important to remember that not all festive foods are good for animals, and can even lead to dangerous reactions. Chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes are all poisonous for dogs, even in small amounts. Turkey skin, gravy, pie, and other traditional holiday foods are also risky and can lead to a dangerous condition in animals called pancreatitis. Avoid sharing table scraps with Fido, no matter

how much he may beg. If you want to include your pet in the feast, make their own special “animal friendly” plate to enjoy - include a special treat or wet food that they normally would not get in order to spread the cheer.

DECORATE WITH CAUTION Creating a warm and festive atmosphere is a big part of the holidays for lots of families, but it’s vital to keep in mind that Christmas trees and Hanukkah candles may create a problem for pets. Flowers and festive plants can result in an emergency veterinary visit if your pet gets hold of them. Amaryllis, mistletoe, balsam, pine, cedar, and holly are among the common holiday plants that can be dangerous and even poisonous to pets who decide to eat them. Poinsettias can be troublesome as well, so make sure to keep them out of reach of animals. Tinsel and other holiday decorations also can be tempting for dogs to eat. Consuming them can cause intestinal blockages, sometimes requiring surgery. Keep any homemade ornaments, particularly those made from saltdough or other food-based materials, out of reach of pets.

HOST VISITORS HUMANELY Having a house full of family and friends is a wonderful time for all, but can be overwhelming to pets who are used to a quiet atmosphere. Even pets that aren’t normally shy may become nervous in the hubbub that can accompany a holiday gathering. Make sure Fluffy has a safe, quiet place to retreat to if they wish to bow out of activities. Tell your guests in advance about your animals and their temperaments. Also, be sure to block the exits to avoid any escape attempts when your visitors are coming and going. If your pet doesn’t fare well with lots of company, consider sending them to a fun doggy daycare while the

Fast & Healthy Dinner Meals Made Easy by Judy Kallestad

The holidays are perfect times for families to gather around the dinner table and enjoy a sumptuous meal together with hearty comfort foods and all the family favorites. But other than holidays, who has time for all the advance dinner prep? After a long day at work, school or wherever, just deciding what to have for dinner is challenging. The last thing you want to do when you get home is to spend time slicing, dicing and waiting for a meal to cook. So what are your options? Grabbing takeout on your way home is expensive. Popping a frozen dinner in the microwave is convenient, but not very healthy. Here are 10 tips to help you toss together a quick, healthy meal and take the stress out of dinnertime.

1.

Mountain biking has been with us since the 70s, rolling highs and lows of the sport’s many moods and disciplines and keeping us fixed with handlebar-wide grins out on our favorite woodsy trails. Innovative riders keen to extend their riding seasons devised all manner of upgrades to keep bikes upright and rolling through winter’s harshest.

HONEY for the Holidays by Anita Dualeh The Midwest is the highest honey-producing region in the country, according to the University of Minnesota Bee Lab. Thus, it’s not difficult to find locally-produced honey here in the Twin Cities. In fact, a quick search on the Minnesota Grown website lists 77 places in the state that produce and sell local honey.

Raw vs. Processed Local

The

LOCAVORE

honey is sold either raw or processed. Raw honey is typically defined as honey

as it exists in the beehive - honey that has not been heated or filtered. Raw honey tends to crystallize more easily, and while some claim that raw honey is better for you, research by the National Honey Board has shown that commercial processing does not affect the nutrient content or antioxidant properties of honey. Processed honey, once it has been extracted from the honeycomb, is strained or filtered to remove pieces of wax, pollen grains, fine particles, and air bubbles. The straining process results in a clear, transparent liquid that many customers prefer.

Growing up on a dairy farm, Anita Dualeh consumed plenty

the importance of establishing trust with their customers. Because their business depends on it, they take their responsibility to their customers seriously.

(Remember, honey is not recommended for children under one year of age because it could be a source of botulinum spores, which infants’ immune systems cannot yet defend themselves against.)

optimal flavor and freshness.

A Welcome Gift Honey is also a great gift. It never goes out of style - and it never spoils. If you’re looking to purchase honey for yourself or to share with others, you’ll be pleased with a variety of local products to choose from. Consider Bare Honey, a St. Paul-based apiary that’s been in business since 2010. In addition to standard jars of liquid honey for sale on their website (barehoney.com) and in area grocery stores, they offer a variety of flavor-infused honey products, creamed honey, honey sticks, and even a chocolate honey spread.

A Versatile Ingredient Finally, honey is a wonderful addition to a variety of sweet and savory dishes. It can sweeten salad dressings and breads, bring out the natural flavor of roasted vegetables, and add a special touch to grilled or roasted meat. Though it’s possible to swap honey in for some, if not all, of the sugar in recipes, you’ll get more predictable results if you select recipes that have been specifically developed with honey as an ingredient. Now that it’s baking season, you may want to try out this honey cake recipe, which has been adapted slightly from Marcy Goldman’s recipe in A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking. It’s warmly spiced and moist, with just the right density. Honey cake, as you may know, is traditionally served for the Jewish New Year, symbolizing the sweetness hoped for in the year to come. I’m not going to predict the future beyond saying that one piece of this cake will brighten the day of anyone with whom you share it.

DEALING WIT H SEASONAL AFFECT IVE DISORDER by Whitney Grindberg

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” proclaims a classic Christmas song. But for 10 million Americans, fall and winter are some of the most difficult times of the year. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is depression brought on by the arrival of autumn and persists until the end of winter. The culprit, it’s believed, is the sharp decline in sunshine, which provides our bodies with the means necessary to create vitamin D for sleeping well and feeling well. A childhood friend once described her experience with SAD as a time of being acutely aware of the overwhelming quietness of fall and winter, 6 1 2 - 2 1 3 - 3 9 0 4   |   7 6 2 0   P E N N   AV E N U E   S O U T H ,   R I C H F I E L D

reminders was a suffocation that settled into a numbness at the arrival of winter. Even if these feelings don’t apply to you, all of us have had occasional bouts of feeling down, so it’s prudent to be aware of our own state of health and do everything we can to promote wellness in ourselves as well as others.

GET ACTIVE Exercise is often encouraged for those struggling with depression, but doing so outside has added benefits: fresh air, sunshine, and a sense of victory over the very thing that has you discouraged. For those suffering from SAD, autumn might be harder for them than winter, but no matter the season there’s always something to do. Hiking, sledding, snowman building, skiing, whatever it may be, get your blood pumping out in the fresh air.

Another option to explore is adding a SAD therapy light to your daily routine. Selling on Amazon from anywhere between $40 to $100+, these light boxes can be very helpful, especially when combined with counseling and medication. Of course, before doing anything drastic, make sure you talk to your doctor to ensure you’re choosing the right option for your situation

BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR SYMPTOMS If you know yourself to be susceptible to feeling down at this time of year, even if you don’t feel “that bad”, consider this a gentle encouragement to seek professional counseling. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a very real thing that affects very real people each year. No matter who you are or what you are going through, there is never anything wrong with getting a professional’s insight into the ups and downs of your life. The stigma and taboo of mental health issues are disappearing, but the more open and honest we are with one another about how we’re actually doing, the closer we are to true wellness. It’s estimated that an additional 10-20% of Americans suffer from a mild form of SAD, so if you find yourself having a few too many days of the winter blues this year, take some time to reflect on your feelings and explore some mental health resources. Keep a list of things you’re thankful for. Volunteer. And surround yourself with people you love, so that no matter what life

‘Tis the season for greeting cards! They’re cute, festive, and fun--but what the heck do you do with them? The guilt of throwing them away is too strong, so we usually end up with an awkward pile of photos and letters stuffed together in the basket we keep in the bathroom for light reading. Some ideas are more for that crazy perfectionist whose home looks like

Fun Ways to DISPLAY Holiday Cards

the cover of Better Homes & Gardens, so here are some fun ideas for us, normal folks.

by Whitney Grindberg

Cute Displays! Perhaps one of the most universal things in life is people putting greeting cards on their refrigerator or taping them to the wall. And while both of these things are nice, miniature clothespins are an easy way to dress things up a little. They’re already adorable on their own, so adding tiny ones to your card display makes it look like you actually have free time. Just superglue them to tiny magnets to hold up your cards (Bonus: these are reusable in any season for holding grocery lists, coupons, or that passive aggressive note about emptying the dishwasher). Stringing twine or ribbon across a wall to clip the clothespins on is an equally adorable idea--make sure you choose a wall that is frequented by foot traffic to get the most amount of “Oohs” and “Aahs” at your spontaneous creativity.

Uptown Minneapolis is one of the hottest neighborhoods in the Twin Cities, full of trendy bars and restaurants, shops, cinemas, and of course, lakes. Take a winter grilling class at Kitchen Window or get wild at Cowboy Jack’s - whatever your speed, Uptown has you covered.

DINING There are a plethora of delicious dining options throughout the Uptown area showcasing both local and international cuisine. From American classics to exotic Thai dishes, this neighborhood has pretty much any type of food you could want. Make sure to check out one

IT’S NO SECRET THAT PEOPLE IN UPTOWN LOVE THEIR LIBATIONS AND THERE ARE DOZENS OF DIFFERENT BARS TO PERUSE ON YOUR NIGHT ON THE TOWN!

of Uptown’s hippest new restaurants, Ho-Ban, which features authentic Korean barbecue you make yourself. If you prefer something a little more traditional, Muddy Waters offers a unique spin on Midwestern favorites such as burgers and hot dogs. For a delicious treat anytime, Sebastian Joe’s and Milkjam Creamery both sell decadent ice cream with a Twin Cities twist.

DRINKING It’s no secret that people in Uptown love their libations and there are dozens of different bars to peruse on your night on the town. The CC Club on Lyndale and 26th is a quintessential dive bar, complete with wood paneling and plenty of PBR. Further south is Lyn-Lake Brewery, featuring Minneapolis-made beers - plus free popcorn! Craft cocktail fans should next door to Moto-i, one of the only sake producers in the country or Chino Latino for some festive punch bowl drinks.

SHOPPING Uptown has tons of cool stores to visit, featuring everything from locally-made artisan crafts to Victoria's Secret bralettes. Fans of vintage clothing or other recycled treasures should definitely check out Via’s Vintage Wear and Buffalo Exchange. Those with more expensive taste may want to visit John Fluevog or Proper & Prim. Hipster mainstays such as Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Ragstock and Apple are all located on the same city block, directly across from shopping and dining behemoth Calhoun Square which houses retailers such as H&M, Francesca's Collection, and Sox Appeal.

ENTERTAINMENT After your delicious dinner or retail therapy session, there are plenty of other things to do in Uptown. The newly renovated Uptown Theater and Lagoon Cinema, both Landmark Theatres properties, screen both independent and wide-release films. Make sure to check out the Uptown’s midnight movie schedule in case you want to experience The Rocky Horror Picture Show or The Room in all of their cult classic glory. Up-Down is a bar/arcade combo that is hot with all ages, featuring dozens of your favorite childhood games including Ms. Pac-Man, Burger Time, and Turtles in Time. Don’t forget about beautiful Lake Calhoun and the surrounding Chain of Lakes, where you can rent a canoe or paddle board and explore nature right in the right of the metro. 34  |

Congrats on your baby! I really hope you enjoyed sleeping – it might be months before you get to do that again. And you think I am joking… Sigh. I wish I were. Now that your sweet little muffin has arrived, you’ll need to start childproofing before your baby starts crawling, climbing, and walking – aka getting into absolutely everything that appears to be dangerous, you know, because that’s what babies like to do.

So, get down to your baby’s eye level and look at everything that is in view and what would be tempting. These are the items you want to be sure to put away, lock up, or place up very high. Preparing to move to a new house or apartment takes a lot of work. Between packing, changing your Internet service, and deciding what furniture needs to go, the job never seems to end. That is where Nick Franta and the team at Quality Moving & Storage comes in. This quality and trustworthy moving services group does it all from transferring wardrobes to storing couches. They even have a separate division specifically for seniors called Box Elder Senior Services.

Whether you’re moving across town or across the state, Quality Moving & Storage Company has your back.

The friendly and expert team can help you and your valuables get to your new home safely - you don’t have to lift a finger!

History C O N V E N I E N C E

Quality Moving & Storage was founded in 1994 by father and son business partners Dave and Nick Franta. The duo noticed a lack of dependable and local moving services that offered the sort of values and commitment to community that they knew their customers desired. It wasn’t long before Quality Moving & Storage Company was a household name across the Twin Cities metro and into Western Wisconsin. Together with a staff of professional, courteous, and fully trained experts in the moving industry, Dave and Nick provide solutions for homeowners, renters, builders, and companies with moving, packing, and storage needs.

any job done, big or small. In addition to climate-controlled storage, the company also offers packing and moving services that will ensure your precious cargo gets from point A to point B safe and sound. For those who are a bit more on the DIY side, Quality Moving has all the supplies needed to complete a move quickly and efficiently, from bubble wrap to packing peanuts. Many customers find how much easier a move is after utilizing a moving service - leave the heavy lifting to the professionals!

shopdinelive.net Box Elder Senior Moving In addition to Quality Moving & Storage, the Frantas also own and operate Box Elder Senior Services. This specialized moving company caters directly to the senior population, ensuring that their needs are met in a safe and dignified manner. Box Elder is appreciated by many in the community, especially those who are assisting their loved ones with a move. Box Elder understands how difficult it can be to make relocation arrangements and have peace of mind that family members and their valuables are cared for. There are traditional moving services available along with extra help for seniors including unpacking/organization and handyman services. This innovative company is just another example of how this family-run business contributes to the entire community.
