Now that the holidays have ended and our lives have returned to their normal routines, we begin to realize that it’s truly winter now--a Minnesota winter. It’s going to be here for a while. And while it would be so nice to hibernate all the way through, we know better than that--Minnesota is ripe with outdoor winter activities for the whole family. Whether you’re an avid skier, a thrill-seeking sledder, or a semi-graceful ice skater, these winter spots are the perfect afternoon or weekend getaway. Keep in mind: pretty much every downhill destination will offer ski, snowboard, and tube rentals, and these are separate from the lift ticket cost. If you’re already feeling the hole in your pocket, there are some free activities here too, just for you.

Make tracks with the critters in one of Minnesota’s most active wildlife refuges, with great river views and in-the-city solitude.
THE HIKE One of the cool things about a fresh quilt of snow in the woods is trackin’. I always like to find the wayward course of a free spirit chickadee, or tiny dots left behind by a mouse sprinting to the cover of a cattail clump, or so many tracks from deer on the exact same path it looks busy enough for stoplights. Those trails all tell a

story, of a search for food, becoming food, building a home, leaving a home. Making my own footprints out there with the wild things is frosty icing on the snowball. We are altogether a spoiled bunch here in the Twin Cities, with so many inspiring, peaceful, lively, soothing, teaching places to go in our hometown outdoors. The belle of my ball for winter hikes in the city is the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge and connecting network of trails along the Minnesota River in Bloomington. With

about 15 miles of trail and hundreds of off-trail acres, this is a great place to play, and it’s a lock to spot all manner of year-round residents out there. The MVNWR is one of only four urban wildlife refuges in the country, and this one is located along the Mississippi Flyway, attracting more than 200 bird species. Indeed, the refuge is arguably the premier birding destination in the state. Bring your binoculars. A rich mix of habitats from wetland and river, to oak savanna and hardwood forest, makes this area a prolific incubator of dozens of land and water-based wildlife as well.

“We specialize in creating unforgettable experiences from the first dance to the final chorus of the last song,” explains founder and owner Jon Li. “At the end of an evening with our entertainers, it is rare that you won’t hear the crowd chanting ‘one more song’, much like what you might expect to hear after your favorite rock band or headlining artist just finished playing the last hit song of their set!” Rock It Man Entertainment is not your typical DJ or cover band - they curate unique experiences based on crowd-participation and the flow of the event. Also, unlike almost all cover bands, Rock It Man’s musicians never use set lists. Saving Money on
Your Wedding
- How Not to Break the Bank on Your Big Day by Rachelle Gordon Getting married is one of the happiest and most exciting events in your life. It may also be one of the most expensive. According to the bridal website The Knot, the average price of a wedding in the United States is just over $31,000. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to help trim the budget for your wedding. From DIY-ing your favors to consigning your dress, opportunities to save are all around you. Read on for some tips on keeping costs for your nuptials low - besides, you still have that dream honeymoon to plan!
“Years from now, you’ll look back on what a great time everyone had, with or without the waiters with the white gloves!”
Be Flexible
One of the main ways that couples save money on their wedding is by holding it on a day other than Saturday and/or during an off-peak season. Venues, caterers, and DJs want full schedule books, and may even offer a significant discount if you hold your event on a Friday or Sunday. And remember that planning a wedding is a lot like buying a car - it’s okay to haggle for a better price!
Buy Used and Save the Difference
Lots of people buy used furniture, clothing, and housewares - why not buy gently loved items for your wedding? The event will only last one day and no one has to know the stuff is used. Consignment stores and online retailers are great places to find bridal attire and accessories while sites like eBay and Craigslist are perfect for decor (think LED candles, vases, etc.). If you aren’t comfortable using secondhand items in your ceremony, remember that other people could be - list your used items after the wedding and get some of that money back! 24 |

Getting crafty is a wonderful way to save big bucks on your wedding, but remember that it takes a lot of work. It’s not tacky or cheap to use some faux elements throughout your ceremony and reception. Replacing fresh flowers with silk or fabric look-alikes in the centerpieces will bother no one (and is also more sustainable). The Fabergé family was French, but fled to Estonia during the reign of Louis XIV to escape religious persecution against Huguenots, a Protestant sect. Eventually, they settled in Russia, and Gustav Fabergé started a jewelry business in St. Petersburg in 1842. His son, Peter Carl, studied goldsmithing in Italy, Germany, London and Paris before returning to the family business. He also studied the new subject of business administration.

Business really took off when he began receiving commissions from the Russian Emperor, Alexander III. Alexander’s son, who became Nicholas II, was so thrilled with a pair of Fabergé cufflinks he received as a birthday gift, that he painted a watercolor “portrait” of them. He continued to paint pictures of his Fabergé gifts until the end of his life.

Fabergé became a rockstar in the jewelry world when Alexander commissioned an egg to present to his wife, Tsarina Maria Feodorovna, for Easter 1885. The simple, white enameled egg opened to reveal a solid gold “yolk” that opened to reveal a golden hen. The hen opened to reveal a tiny, diamond-encrusted crown and an even tinier ruby egg. The gift was a hit, and the imperial family ordered a new egg every year for 50 years.

The exhibit at TMORA doesn’t include any of the exquisite eggs, but you can see other examples of fabulous Fabergé workmanship. The pieces in the exhibit have never been gathered in one place before. Some left Russia during the revolution and come from private collections; others were found hidden in the Kremlin Armory. All are truly wonderful. The pieces range from a gold-and-diamond pendant with a ¼-inch-high portrait of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna to a silver automaton of a rhinoceros that moves forward, raises its head and switches its tail at the turn of a silver key. There are “everyday” items from the imperial household such as enameled inkwells, cigarette cases and a menu holder with a menu in French (upper-class Russians spoke French. Their native tongue was

A silver bramble branch is so realistic you could feel the tiny thorns and the veins in the leaves (if you could get your hands through the display case). The star of the show is a tiny sedan chair about the size of a salt shaker. It has a delicate, iridescent peach/orange enamel exterior painted with flowers and bows so tiny the painter must have used a microscope to complete the work. Its windows are lined with tiny diamonds. The exhibit concludes February 26. The Museum of Russian Art is located at 5500 Stevens Ave., just off the Diamond Lake Rd. exit on 35W. Parking is free in the Mayflower Church lot across the street. Admission is $10 for adults; $8 for seniors 65-plus; $5 for college students with ID and kids up to 14; children under 13 are free. Local CHEESE is Sure to Please by Anita Dualeh
About 9.5 billion pounds of milk are produced each year in Minnesota, according to the State Department of Agriculture, and a fairly high percentage of that milk gets turned into cheese. In fact, cheese is big business here, with Minnesota ranking sixth in the nation for cheese production. Large companies such as Land O’Lakes in Arden Hills, Associated Milk Producers of New Ulm and Davisco Foods in Le Sueur, Minnesota manufacture the bulk of the cheese.

Having a pet is a rewarding experience, with most four-legged friends becoming another member of the family. And just like the humans in your brood, you want to make sure your pet is happy and healthy. If you’re thinking of adding to your brood, make sure to do your research. There are many ways to promote pet wellness aside from the annual veterinary visit - read on for some of our tips and tricks to keep Fido feeling great!
Ensure Proper Nutrition Not all dog foods are created equal, and table scraps are a big no-no. So how do you find a quality food that is

both delicious to your pet and also nutritious? The first step is to talk to your vet - they may have recommendations based on breed or certain health concerns. When shopping for kibble, check the ingredient list. You want to see a lot of natural proteins and less grain. Make sure to keep dog treats to a minimum; dog obesity is a real concern among the veterinary community and should be taken seriously.
Keep Dental Care in Check C O N V E N I E N C E
Oral health in pets is often overlooked but is critical untreated dental problems can lead to serious illness or infection. Make sure to brush your dog’s teeth regularly - your vet can recommend the right products. Some animals do not like this, but wiping the teeth and gums with gauze works well too. There are also special dental chews designed to remove plaque and freshen breath. It’s not a bad idea to include a teeth cleaning at the annual vet visit or trip to the groomer - let the pros handle it.
