A grand vision for a major development involving several city blocks in the Downtown East Neighborhood will provide not only much needed additions to residential and office space in the city, but will revitalize and transform an entire Minneapolis neighborhood into a major urban destination for shopping, dining, recreation, and entertainment. Located across from the Downtown East Commons Park, a 4.2-acre public park that occupies two city blocks, and just a few hundred yards from the Mississippi River, the ambitious project features residential space with the stylish EDITION RESIDENCES. The boutique apartments provide nearly 200 new rental units; two adjacent 17-story office towers will offer 1.2 million square feet of work space for 6,000 employees; and a 1,600-plus-vehicle-capacity parking facility will accommodate visitors to the more than 28,000 square feet of retail and dining businesses on street and skyway levels of the complex. The development bridges several integral parts of the city – the nearby University of Minnesota, the Mill District, the U.S. Bank Stadium, and the Elliott Park neighborhood. Multiple points of access to the downtown Minneapolis skyway, numerous bicycle lanes and Nice Ride bike rental stations, as well as immediate proximity to light rail and bus lines conveniently connect residents, workers and visitors alike to the entire greater Twin Cities area – and beyond. The project’s centrepiece, a 4.2 acre multi-purpose public park, will feature large open and shaded green spaces for gathering, recreation and entertainment, a refreshments concessions area, and a versatile, playful and interactive water fountain component, among others. From outdoor concerts and community events to spaces for games, exercise and leisure, the park will have ample room to roam and enjoy, and is destined to become a favorite downtown spot for outdoor activities.

Ties Be Damned: The History & Trends of

Father’s Day by Jacob Westlin

While Father’s Day in the United States is forever and reasonably coupled with its maternal counterpart Mother’s Day, the road to official national observation of the two holidays are, surprisingly, separated by more than a half century. The genesis of Mother’s Day, dating back to the often heart-wrenching familial dynamic experienced during the Civil War, was ultimately recognized as an official American holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. As the movement was gaining steam in the early twentieth century, however, Spokane resident Sonora Smart Dodd — as a tribute to her father, a single parent of six — was crusading for a similar holiday celebrating dads. Unfortunately, her initial campaign was fruitless with reaction ranging from passive nods of disinterest to wholesale antagonistic blowback. After briefly curbing her crusade while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, however, Dodd redoubled her efforts. Over time, Father’s Day became an unofficial part of the culture, as presidents from Calvin Coolidge to Lyndon Johnson openly issued proclamations and speeches in favor of the day. Finally, in 1972, Richard Nixon signed it into law, making it an official national holiday. It seems appropriate, then, given Dodd’s relentless political struggle and the fifty-eight year gap between official parental holidays to honor your father’s 2016 celebration (June 19) with more than… a tie. The forgettable collar-tightening garment as the go-to gift is as old as the holiday itself with very few satisfied fathers along the way. And, with today’s seemingly unlimited access to creative and personalized gifts, why waste another year giving dad a closet-clogging piece of fabric? Tools, of course, are a linchpin of the Father’s Day industry. And why not? Most men love a loud new tool that simultaneously generates frustration and envy among the neighbors. But choosing which tool can be a confounding chore. Here’s a suggestion: simply ask him what he needs. There is a cultural stigma associated with “spoiling the surprise”; however, this needn’t be a hard and fast rule. The typical man would much rather get the 55cc gas chainsaw he wanted than another Phillips-head screwdriver, even if he knew it was coming. 8  |

GRAB A SEAT OUTSIDE AND ENJOY

By Heather Hall

In a city like Minneapolis there are many places to eat that offer both great food and a great outside dining experience. I was challenged to pick my top four places and share them with you today. Hope you enjoy my selection.

SEA SALT EATERY Here patience is mandatory as the line almost always hangs outside the door. Its location at 4825 Minnehaha Ave lets you walk, run, skateboard, rollerblade, bike or drive to this seafood stand. After ordering your food at the window, you find a table with great views of the water – or even sit beside the lake. Indoor seating is limited, so pick a nice day to visit. You really can’t miss with anything on the menu but their crab cakes, oysters, fabulous guacamole, and a great selection of beers are on the top of my list. Come as you are!

GET YOUR GRILL ON:

by Cindy Mennenga

YES! GRILLING SEASON IS FINALLY BACK! There is nothing that says summer’s back better than firing up the grill and tossing burgers or a big juicy steak on the grill. The aroma of the meat cooking and the sound of it sizzling away on the BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, & BAR

grill is festive and welcome to most folks. Grilling skills are acquired. No one just accidentally becomes great at running a grill without a lot of practice, study of the craft, and determination to sear up some great grub. Because there is more to meets the eye when it comes to grilling, let’s look at some simple grilling hacks that will quickly help you look like a seasoned grilling pro.

Great Grilling Hacks

This will prevent the fish from sticking to the grill, plus the lemons will add a nice citrus flavor to the fish. Make meatless dishes for your vegetarian friends. You can skewer fruits and veggies and grill them, or wrap a variety of veggies in foil with a little olive oil and salt, wrap tightly, and toss on the grill for 10-15 minutes. This makes a great entrée or side dish.

Make a tent of foil to prevent the meat from drying out. When you let the meat rest before serving, an aluminum foil tent allows the meat to reabsorb its juices evenly. Oil the grill grate before you add the food. This will flavor the food and help to keep the food from sticking to the grill. Marinate meats in advance. A great marinade adds lots of sensational flavors to an otherwise ordinary piece of meat. Also, a marinade tenderizes meats, so if you are cooking a tougher piece of meat, the marinade will work wonders on the tenderness of the meat and improve the flavor.

ONE THING THAT IS GREAT ABOUT GRILLING,

LUXURY

by Mark Remme, Minneapolis Downtown Council

It’s Free. It’s Fun. Don’t Miss it. Have you always wondered what attracts people to downtown living? What’s inside those beautiful apartment buildings? Have you considered moving downtown but don’t know if it’s a match with your lifestyle? On May 21st you’ll have your chance to answer these questions during Explore Downtown Living 2016.

It’s Fun We’ve done all the planning for you. From 10am – 5pm you can visit nearly 30 of the best living spaces that downtown Minneapolis has to offer – throughout the Central Business District, Downtown East/Mill District, Loring Park, North Loop and Northeast. You can stop in at any or all of the properties. You can check out their unique floor plans and even see the sights from their rooftops. You’ll move at your own pace. Simply follow the Field Guide we provide and create your own tour. Along the way, make sure to stop in at select North Loop boutiques, Warehouse District restaurants or even have coffee in Loring Park. Why? Because you’re getting deals, discounts and giveaways

as part of the Explore Downtown Living experience. To see our partners and discover the specials they are offering, visit exploredtliving.com/partner-offers. And don’t worry about being solicited or dealing with high pressure sales people – because we know that’s no fun.

It’s Free To join us, simply sign up for the event at ExploreDTLiving.com. There is no cost or obligation. We’ll send you the event Field Guide which you’ll use to claim the special deals from our partners.

Don’t Miss It Last year we hosted more than 8,500 guests. Some took advantage of the deals and strolled around the city. Others found their next home and signed up for an apartment on the spot. Still others used it as a way to research downtown to see if it might be a fit for them. Here’s what one guest had to say: “Moving to a new city is always a little unsettling,” said new resident Peter Hyman. “Explore Downtown Living was the perfect chance for me to tour wonderful buildings and learn about the various neighborhoods.” Hyman said he chose the North Loop because, as an empty nester, it reminded him of one of his first apartments in Greenwich Village years ago. “Here I’m in the middle of everything and could not be happier,” he said.

We look forward to seeing you on May 21st. Sign up for Explore Downtown Living today! This year’s Explore Downtown Living will feature the following properties: 4Marq, 222 Hennepin, 430 Oak Grove, 700 Central*, Bolero Flats*, Brunsfield North Loop, Churchill, District 600*, Dock Street Flats, Edition*, Eitel City Apartments*, Junction Flats, LaSalle, Latitude 45, Next Event:

Moss family celebrates nearly a century of providing the Twin Cities with top quality eye care. The story begins in 1918 when Dr. George Oliver Moss graduated from Bradley College with dual degrees in Optometry and watch-making. He started practicing his craft as an employee of State Jewelers, which was located next to the State Theater on Hennepin Ave. In 1935, during the heart of the great depression, Dr. Moss left State Jewelers and opened Moss Optical on 7th St. near Hennepin Ave. His two sons, Robert and Anthony, soon joined the practice as opticians – beginning their legacy as a family business. “We are very proud of our many years of service to the Twin Cities,” said Kevin Moss, a third-generation family member who now owns the practice. “As the current caretaker of Moss Optical, I’m committed to continuing our quality service to the community. I’m also proud to have fourth- and fifth-generation family members working with me.” As the firm’s reputation grew, people from all over the state began traveling to downtown Minneapolis to see Doctor George and his sons to get quality eye exams and eyeglasses. Moss Optical returned to the bustle of Hennepin Avenue in 1957, moving to thoroughly modern digs at 617 Hennepin next to the Gopher Theater.

Through the sixties, Moss Optical became the go-to place for everyone from beatniks to bankers – quickly gaining the reputation as the best place to grab a pair of the hippest cat-eye and gem-studded frames available. In the mid-1970s, the business moved to 10 South 8th Street, next door to the bustling Dayton’s Department Store. Over the years, five of Robert senior’s seven children — Robert Jr., Dianne, Barbara, Beth and Kevin — have worked in the store in some capacity. Current owner Kevin Moss officially joined the business in 1983, running it alongside his brother Robert and his sister Barbara until they both retired in 2000. Barb’s daughter Jane joined the practice in 1992 and has become an integral part of the business as its insurance specialist and lab technician. Then a decade ago, they added their fifth generation family member to the business when Kevin Beck, owner Kevin Moss’s great-nephew, joined the practice as certified optician and lab assistant. Not only is Kevin an excellent frame stylist, but he’s very mechanical and can fix almost anything – including broken glasses. Dr. Alan Diamond became the resident Optometrist for the practice in 2000 after Robert Moss retired. He is a very skilled doctor and has been a perfect fit for Moss Optical. In 2008, the firm jumped at the opportunity to move from its corner spot at 8th and LaSalle to its current, convenient Skyway location. It was then that Tamara Stockdale joined the team as store merchandiser and certified optician. She has a true passion for eyewear and puts her heart into styling all of her clients. As for the future, Kevin Moss says that they will continue to focus on what they do best – deliver high quality eye care and eyewear to their long-term loyal customers as well as new ones who’ve discovered that Moss Optical remains the go-to destination for their vision needs.

GRAND OLD DAYS

are long gone, but Grand Old Day has become such a popular summer event — it attracted 300,000 people last year — that it’s been expanded this year to two days. Saturday, June 4, is the additional day. Retailers, restaurants and other businesses will hold sidewalk sales and in-store events. Businesses that normally close on Sunday will be open, giving visitors a chance to see and visit more locations along Grand Ave. without having to deal with huge crowds. The street itself will remain open to vehicular traffic on Saturday. The Kids Adventure Zone will also be open on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It features bounce houses, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, arts and crafts, and water wars. It will be located between Wheeler and

Marching bands, floats, “royalty” from various communities and local celebrities will all traverse Grand Ave. from Dale St. to Fairview Ave in Minnesota’s first summer parade. On Sunday, the 30-block stretch of Grand from Prior Ave. to Dale St. will be closed off to all but pedestrian traffic and divided into four “districts”:

specter of watery suffocation at every turn. Please take a moment to review the basics of water safety — reading this article is slightly more fun than drowning!

Learn how to perform CPR on both children and adults and maintain that skill. The Red Cross provides affordable CPR classes which can be found at redcross.org.

USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM WHILE SWIMMING. Team up with a friend who will watch your back in the water, and vice versa, and confirm you’re both OK regularly.

Have children, inexperienced swimmers, and all boat passengers wear U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets at all times when they’re near the water. Drowning requires only inches of water, much less the quantity

USE CAUTION AROUND NATURAL BODIES OF WATER. Undertows, currents, rocks invisible just beneath the surface, and poisonous animals are all naturally occurring and hard to spot environmental hazards.

you’d find in Lake Minnetonka! Keep rescue equipment, a cell phone, and a first aid kit around water at all times. Teach children how to dial 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.

ALCOHOL MIXES WITH MANY THINGS, BUT NOT WITH WATER. Alcohol affects your judgment, balance, and coordination, and it impacts your body’s ability to stay warm. Leave the booze behind when you go swimming! DON’T LET CHILDREN NEAR THE WATER UNSUPERVISED, don’t entrust a child’s life to another child, and teach children never to go near water without permission and supervision.

Now, in the lighter spirit of things, here’s a fun fact about drowning. Did you know that in the 1700’s it was standard medical practice to resuscitate drowning victims with tobacco smoke? Just how the smoke was administered, however, we’d rather not say!

HAVE FUN OUT THERE, AND STAY SAFE!

Don’t let children have breath-holding contests underwater. If you have a home pool or hot tub, install barriers like four foot or taller fences and lockable safety covers around them. Never prop the gate to a pool open.
