The Best of Downtown Fargo by Jamee Larson

In 1922, the J.C. Nichols Company created the nation’s first shopping mall in Kansas City, Missouri. Although the Country Club Plaza was nothing compared to the size of today’s malls, it nevertheless moved the common marketplace indoors from the street.

COMICS-N-CARDS

Much More Than Just Words and Pictures by Jamee Larson In 1895, a newspaper called The New York World debuted a comic strip entitled “The Yellow Kid.” Written by Richard Outcault, the comic quickly became famous and led to more writers trying their hand at the new genre. 120 years later, the comic has become a part of mainstream society. Whether you grew up during the age of Blondie, Mutt & Jeff, and Little Orphan Annie or that of Calvin & Hobbs and the Fantastic Four, chances are great that you have enjoyed a comic or two. Although the digital age has fostered a movement towards digital books (and comics), the print book is still thriving. One need not look any further than Paradox Comics-N-Cards, Inc. to see the evidence. Open since 1993, Paradox has steadily expanded its customer base and carved out its own impressive niche within the Downtown Fargo business sector. Paradox is more than just a retail store. Although it does have a vast array of comics and graphic novels, it is also a haven for fans of card, board, and role-playing games. Walk into the store on any

Although these were often more like libraries than bookstores, they represent the first attempt to share and disseminate information to the masses. Of course, the reproduction of books during that era was painstakingly slow. It wasn’t until Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century that books were able to be distributed on a large scale. Today, libraries and bookstores are commonplace for virtually every community in the United States. Some are operated by million dollar chains like Barnes and Noble, while others represent the blood, sweat, and tears that every book lover can relate to. Although Amazon and other online platforms initially caused quite a transformation in the book world, Danz has seen a resurgence of printed books over the last five years. “The challenge is getting people to keep reading books and to support independent bookstores and local businesses,” he explained. Zandbroz is also known for hosting a variety of literary events, especially those featuring local writers. The store is a substantial supporter of the arts, both within Downtown Fargo and throughout the entire Red River Valley. Because of their stellar reputation, securing a book reading or another artistic event at Zandbroz is considered a source of pride. HOT TREND: FARM TO TABLE

by Cindy Mennenga

Farm to table dining has become an amazingly popular trend in the past few years. With more attention directed toward clean eating, sustainability and the push toward living a green lifestyle, conditions were right for the locavore movement to launch around the country. The concept of eating locally grown foods, sourced from farms in the area, rather than from some anonymous factory farm hundreds or even thousands of miles away, has become extremely popular. Witness the numerous farmers markets that have popped up in the past few years, bringing locally sourced fruits, veggies, meats and cheeses directly to the consumer. There is something special and meaningful about interacting with the farmer as you purchase fresh foods for your family. Farm to table got its roots from the concept of chefs wanting their customers to understand where their food was from and to know that their food was grown by a farmer, an actual person, much the same experience you can encounter at your local farmers market.

“When the food we eat isn’t hauled hundreds or thousands of miles, we have voted to help the earth, rather than to continue to harm it.”

SEASONAL DINING

One of the best things about farm to table dining, is eating seasonally. When particular foods are in season,

REGIONAL FAVORITES

When chefs choose to offer farm to table entrees, they become experts at preparing the foods that are local to the region, rather

than becoming generalists at preparing a wide variety of foods. This always makes it fun to travel to different regions of the country, to try the dishes that are regional favorites. Farm to table is here to stay because it works and it is sustainable. Eating healthy and clean and green has come out of the shadows and has become mainstream. More people, every day, are taking a more active role in their daily food choices, which is beginning to have an impact on the products available on grocer’s shelves.

Eating local is smart and healthy. Try it for

SUSTAINABLE AND GREEN

Reducing our individual impact on the environment is of concern to many of us. By dining at restaurants

that source locally grown foods, we feel good about supporting the local economy and choosing to support a more sustainable way of interacting with the world. When the food we eat isn’t hauled hundreds or thousands of miles, we have voted to help the earth, rather than to continue to harm it. Consumers are more enlightened and aware than a generation ago. People are asking the tough questions and demanding answers to how their food gets from the field to their table. No longer silent, consumers are taking a more active role in deciding which products make their way into the home and which ones do not. The best way to protest products that aren’t produced in alignment with your values is to vote with your feet and not purchase them.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SAUCE by Jamee Larson

It’s not every day that you can find a restaurant that appeals to both families and college-aged students. Think half Chuck E. Cheese and half Rooters Bar and you will have Fargo’s Kitchen Gremlin. In addition to the special Gremlin Sauce, the composition of which is a well-guarded secret, the key to Kitchen Gremlin’s sandwiches are the buns, which are hand-made on site each morning. The restaurant’s bagel buns are particularly tasty. Kitchen Gremlin also as a variety of unique, signature drinks. Chances are great that even if you have previously been to Kitchen Gremlin, you will find new offerings on the menu. In addition to management coming up with new burger and sandwich combinations, the cooks and servers are encouraged to explore their creativity as well. Occasionally, the staff will have contests on who can create the next bestselling burger. The results are flavor combinations that push the envelope, so to speak. Some even make it onto the full-time menu, which is why Kitchen Gremlin is known for its ability to think outside the proverbial box. If you haven’t been to Kitchen Gremlin, waste time no more. It has rapidly become one of Downtown Fargo’s most unique and entertaining restaurants with a varied menu and exhilarating vibe. Gummy Bear, and the KG Manhattan. The obvious nod to college students does not mean Kitchen Gremlin is not a family restaurant. In fact, appealing to that demographic is one of the goals of the restaurant. “Family friendly is what we want to put out there,” Lefort explained. “There is really nothing else downtown for kids and families.” Part of that family focus includes a game room equipped with foosball, darts, and video games, including the retro-arcade king Pac-Man. The walls to the restrooms are also lined with chalkboards, and come on, who doesn’t love chalk? As if that wasn’t enough, a portion of the dining area is fitted with leather furniture, in line with the restaurant’s laid-back and convivial vibe.

What’s in Your Boba Tea? by Jamee Larson In today’s hustle and bustle world, few people take the time to actually sit and enjoy the world around them. We have largely become a drive-through kind of society. If something can be accomplished in three minutes, we want it done in two. Not everyone is buying into the faster is better mentality, however. Those of you who have been to Fargo’s Teaberry knows this to be true. Instead of pumping out cookie-cutter drinks and expecting their customers to move along, Teaberry has created an atmosphere that invites people to stop, relax, and embrace all that is now. Teaberry has been in operation since 2008. During that time, it has steadily built a reputation as serving the best smoothies in town. I’m not talking about the traditional smoothie, however; as Teaberry has brought the Boba Tea to Downtown Fargo. Although it looks like a smoothie, the drink is actually a non-dairy product that uses jasmine green tea as a base. Customers are then able to add up to three all-natural powdered flavors. The Boba Tea doesn’t stop there, however. Customers are able to further customize their drinks with the addition of jellies made of seaweed extract that add another layer of flavor and an element of fun to the drink. The best part is that all Boba Teas are made fresh, so you know you are getting exactly what you ordered. With so many flavor options, the combinations are truly endless. In addition to the delicious Boba Teas, it is the ambiance of Teaberry that sets it apart from other beverage shops or restaurants. Walk through the doors on any given day and you will likely find people doing homework, playing board games, or simply enjoying the soft sounds of the restaurant’s stereo system. Although the location has become a favorite hangout for high school and college students, you will also find customers of all ages enjoying a refreshing Tea. A hang-out type of atmosphere is what the owners of Teaberry were shooting for. In addition to traditional seating areas, the restaurant also has comfortable couches, oversized pillows, and bean-bag type chairs. For an added twist, every wood surface is covered with names and messages that have been carved in by past customers. My niece Ella and I are frequent visitors to Teaberry, and the first thing we have to do is try to find her name. Although the Boba Tea is Teaberry’s signature drink, that is not the only thing on the menu. Those of you that would prefer alternative drinks can still enjoy a visit to the restaurant. The menu includes green, white, and herbal tea, coffee, hot chocolate, hot cider and more. With the plethora of Boba Tea combinations, however, it is virtually impossible to not find a flavor you will enjoy. The rise of social media and technology, in general, has facilitated a transformation in how we communicate with each other. Why call or interact faceto-face with someone when you can send them a text in a few seconds? Fortunately, places like Teaberry are trying to reverse that trend. By creating a space that is inviting and hip, the restaurant has made it cool again to hang out with friends and family. Add the unique, delightful taste of the Boba Tea and it is no wonder that Teaberry has become one of the hottest places in town.

Louise Erdrich

RELE A SE S ANOTHER LITERARY MASTERPIECE by Jamee Larson The state of North Dakota does not have a plethora of celebrities to call their own. When someone is able to break through and make a name for themselves on a national level, we fiercely adopt them as part of the family and feel a surging sense of pride as they accomplish great things. You don’t need to look further than the draft day hysteria regarding former NDSU quarterback/now Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz to understand this phenomenon. North Dakota has contributed several authors to the literary world, including such names as Chuck Klosterman and Louis L’Amour. An author that has garnered even more attention, however, is Karen Louise Erdrich, known professionally as Louise Erdrich. On the heels of her 2012 novel Round House, winner of the National Book Award for Fiction, Erdrich recently

“Pursue the authentic – decide first/ what is authentic,/ then go after it with all your heart.” - Louise Erdrich

For fervent fans of Erdrich’s work, the release of a new book feels a bit like Christmas. “I bought it on the first day it was out,” said Ann Beto. “I’ve read every book, story, or poem she has ever written and I am never disappointed.” For Beto, it is Erdrich’s connection to North Dakota and the fact that she has never left the Midwest, even after becoming famous, that sets her apart from other writers. “My favorite book is Love Medicine and it’s really neat that she wrote that book while living in Fargo,” Beto explained. “She’s just a regular person like all of us.” The entire Erdrich family has made a substantial impact on North Dakota. Of the four Erdrich sisters, all are writers or artists in one form or another. The sisters are to Wahpeton as the Bronte sisters were to Yorkshire, England. In 2013, Wahpeton Mayor Jim Sturdevant cemented the Erdrich’s legacy by proclaiming April 20 “Erdrich Family Day.” In his speech, the mayor called the family “an essential piece and integral part of shaping our city’s history.”

Studios, 1, 2 & 3 Bedrooms

In a poem entitled “Advice to Myself,” Erdrich writes, “Pursue the authentic – decide first / what is authentic, / then go after it with all your heart.” It is that philosophy that has turned her into a household name both throughout North Dakota and within the entire country. Her latest novel La Rose is sure to add to that prominence.

Sam Olson has been associated with the street fair for the past six years – first as a vendor and now as the organizer of the food court. For Olson, it’s all about the element of surprise. “I love the look in people’s eyes when they see the thing (art/craft/food) that they didn’t know they wanted but now can’t wait to have,” he said. According to Olson, this year’s fair will offer both fair staples like corn dogs and cheese curds, as well as distinctive offerings like Paella Quesadillas and even West African Cuisine. New and unique food vendors will include Seafood Market, Dakota Corn Roasters, and African Express. A final treat will be a homemade pie from the Sons of Norway, which will be served Thursday in the US Bank Plaza. Olson’s all-time favorite fair food is gyros, although he has also partaken in strange offerings like Deep Fried Beer. Although that item will not be on the menu of the Fargo Street Fair, chances are you will be able to find something you can consider your own strangest food. Although many initially resist bizarre food combinations, eventually the spirit of the fair takes over and those same people are seen walking down the sidewalk eating a giant fried gummy bear. It is a phenomenon that Olson knows very well. “It comes down to the atmosphere,” he began. “People are already having a great time at the fair, which puts them in a good mood thereby making them open to try something unique.” The Fargo Street Fair will take place on Thursday, July 14th from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm; Friday, July 15th from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm; and Saturday, July 16th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Fargo Blues Festival ROLLIN’ AND ROCKIN’ FOR OVER TWO DECADES b

by Jamee Larson

20 years ago, Dan Bredell decided that Fargo needed a Blues Festival. That initial show, held in 1996, featured many renowned acts, including the Jeff Healey Band, Keb Mo, and Jonny Lang. Fast forward to 2016, and the festival has now included over 50 Grammy Award winning or nominated acts and three members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The 21st annual Fargo Blues Festival will take place at Newman Field

In addition to the stellar music, the festival will also feature over 40

come from all over the country and even six Canadian Providences,” Bredell explained. “We get a lot of people from Washington, Texas, and California. I sold to a couple of people on the East Coast today.”

Friday’s acts include Mud Morganfield (the son of Muddy Waters), Shannon Curfman (former guitarist and backup vocalist for Kid Rock), Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers, the Cedric Burnside Project (the grandson of legendary RL Burnside), the Dee Miller Band featuring Jimi Primetime Smith, and the Groove Tones. The action starts at 2:00 pm, with Mud Morganfield taking the stage at 9:00 pm to close out the day. Saturday will also be a treat. Performers include the world renowned band Canned Heat, Zac Harmon, Joanne Shaw Taylor (often called the Queen of British Blues), the Jimmys (a seven-piece band from Wisconsin), Studebaker John and The Hawks, and Fargo’s own Blind Joe. The festival opens at 12:00 pm and continues until Canned Heat performs at 8:00 pm to end the festival. For those that have never been to Newman Field, it is the home of Fargo’s semi-professional baseball team, the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. The stadium setting makes it the perfect place for a music festival. Not only is the grass pristine (bring a lawn chair), but the grandstand provides real bathrooms and a break from the sun for those who share my Norwegian skin tone. “It (the festival) is not crowded and is very comfortable,” Bredell said. Pam Hopkins can be included in the group of people who spend 51 weeks a year looking forward to the festival. “I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere with friendly people and of course the great music,” she explained. “Last year, my favorite band was the Fabulous Thunderbirds, although the other bands were just as good.”

For Hopkins, the atmosphere of the event is what makes it stand out from other music festivals. “People aren’t all standing and screaming. This is more relaxing; it’s not wound up and stressful like concerts,” she said. For those who have never been to the Fargo Blue Festival, take Hopkins’ advice and see what you’ve been missing. “You should go, take a lawn chair, and grab your favorite beverages from the vendors,” she said. “Take it easy) and be ready for a good time.” Still unsure about the festival? In 2015, the Mayor of Fargo proclaimed August 15th “Dan Bredell Day.” The Blues Festival has become so popular that the founder and promoter has his own day in Fargo. Enough said. Those in attendance on August 9 will be able to enjoy pony rides, inflatable games, and music by fan favorite October Road. Organized in 2004, the band has become a staple of the musical scene in the Midwest. October Road’s sound has been described as “Funky Country,” as they try to bring a soulful, upbeat approach to the music they play. The final River Arts event will be held on August 23. In addition to the appearance of a photo booth, guests will be able to enjoy music by The Front Fenders. Known for their high energy classic rock concerts, the band is equally comfortable adding a bit of country or pop to their set list. One might even hear a show-tune or two. Despite the success of the River Arts program, Wangler is always looking for ways to make the events even better. “I would love to see more artists demonstrating their talents as well as selling their artwork or hand-crafted items,” she said. Vendors may sell items that are handmade, home grown, hand painted, sculpted, etc. The vendor fee is only $15/day. One of the best parts of summer is the ability to spend extended time with family and friends. There is no better way to do that than to grab some lawn chairs and head down to Moorhead’s Memorial Park. Whether you grab your dance partner and tear up some grass or watch your excited child on a pony ride, you are likely to find something to entertain your entire family. If you haven’t been to a River Arts event, you are truly missing out. GO Environmentally conscious lifestyles are a way of life for many people. But while men and women may look to hybrid cars or energy-saving appliances to reduce their carbon footprints, few may know they can go green with their pets, too. Pet care is likely not the first thing pet owners think of when they look to tweak their lifestyles to make them more environmentally friendly. But there are many ways pet owners can take a more eco-friendly approach to caring for their pets.

BUY ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TOYS & SUPPLIES. Many businesses now produce products with the environment in mind, and manufacturers of pet products are no exception. When buying toys and supplies for your furry friends, look for products made from recycled materials or natural fibers. Such products may even be packaged in postconsumer materials like recycled paper.

KEEP A WATCHFUL EYE ON YOUR PETS. Pets that are allowed to roam free can have an adverse impact on local wildlife. For example, cats that are allowed out to roam your yard and the yards of your neighbors may be on the prowl for birds, and killing birds can have a negative impact on local ecosystems. Each bird death caused by a cat is preventable if pet owners simply keep their feline friends inside, which veterinarians note is good for the average cat’s life expectancy. In addition, keep your dog on a leash when taking Fido for a walk or to the park, as dogs also are prone to some questionable behavior when off the leash and out from under the watchful eyes of their owners.

That’s what makes it fun.” Schultz brings a positivity to the job that is easily infused through the staff. In fact, the word “positivity” was discussed several times during our interview. An example of Schultz’s positivity mantra is his approach to keeping golf carts off the greens. At many courses, those who drive the carts too far in are chastised and possibly even punished. Schultz takes a different approach by “flipping the script.” Instead of a negative interaction with golfers over that infraction, he has decided to reward those who follow the rule instead. The reward? A business card worth one ice cream treat in the clubhouse. “I want that positivity to become part of the culture here.” If you have never golfed at Maple River,

ADD UPCYCLING TO YOUR HOME IMPROVEMENT TOOLS Upcycling is not just for craft projects — it offers lots of possibilities to make changes in your home décor, especially cabinets and furniture that will save money and reduce your contribution to the local landfill. Woodcraft can help you with upcycling ideas, products and advice. For the past year, Woodcraft retail stores have hosted upcycling demonstrations on the third Saturday of the month to help customers discover the potential for upcycling in their home projects. “To support this upcycling effort, Woodcraft.com added an Upcycling Resource Center to our website (http://www.woodcraft.com/media/ upcycling.aspx) to introduce viewers to upcycling and announce demo topics and dates,” Vince Grlovich, vice president for sales and marketing, said. “Viewers can also watch a segment of Lifetime’s Designing Spaces where Woodcraft product development manager Kent Harpool shows host Aliane Baquerot how to create a shelf from a wooden pallet.” Both Woodcraft’s Pinterest page (www.pinterest.com/woodcraftsupply/upcycling) and Instagram gallery (http://instagram.com/woodcraftgallery) include upcycling ideas, and the blog, Woodworking Adventures (http//:blog.woodcraft.com) has featured upcycling several times.

“...lots of possibilities to make changes in your home décor...” J E W E L RY A R M O I R E M A K EOV E R Inspired by the upcycling trend, many Woodcraft employees have completed projects, including marketing manager Lori Haught, who transformed a 1980s Jewelry Armoire (see photo) into a more stylish, modern piece for her bedroom. She gave it a new coat of paint, new silver/ glass pulls and flocking on the drawer interiors. You can see the entire process by visiting Woodworking Adventures and searching for “The Jewelry Armoire Makeover.” An Irwin Marples Blue Chip Chisel was used for the disassembly that was required to add new hardware and make other changes to Lori’s armoire. To remove the residue from old finishes and polish, Lori chose Norton Soft Touch Medium 120-180 Grit Sanding Sponges for the contour detailed areas and Preppin Weapon Sanding Blocks, loaded with Mirka Abranet 23⁄4” x 8” Sanding Sheets, for flat areas. Once the sanding was finished, all the pieces were cleaned with General Finishes Furniture Cleaner using handy Star Wipers rags. Three coats of General Finishes Black Gel Stain were applied to the armoire. Although each coat was allowed to dry overnight because of other commitments, the actual time required between coats is two to four hours. (Gel stains come in 12 other colors including the popular java.) Two coats of General Finishes High Performance Satin Water-Based Top Coat were applied next. To prep for the new hardware, Golden Oak Water-Base Famowood Filler was used to plug screw holes. More chiseling was required before a pair of 11⁄2” X 11⁄8” Satin Nickel Stop Hinges could be installed.

A few repairs, a new coat of paint, sparkly new pulls, and interior flocking turned this piece into a stylish, modern Jewelry Armoire. OTH E R P O P U L A R U P C YCL I N G PR O D U C T S Soy-Gel is a 100 percent biodegradable, virtually odorless coating remover. Restor-A-Finish can be used to clean and restore the luster to a clear finish, as well as hide minor issues like scratches. It will also remove water rings. Milk paint is a popular coating, especially for furniture. General Finishes Milk Paint is premixed and available in 28 colors that can be mixed to make custom colors and lend themselves to decorative effects such as distressing and antiquing. Old Fashioned Milk Paint is a powder that comes in 20 colors and is good for use on porous surfaces such as bare wood and raw masonry. A special effect Old Fashioned Milk Paint Crackle Finish provides a weathered look. The 23-lb. portable QuikBENCH™ is a lightweight, easy-to-set-up workbench capable of holding up to 300 lbs.
