16 Beers on Tap

Socializing Your Dog:

Patios, Taprooms, and More by Whitney Grindberg

Grassroots taprooms and breweries are popping up on almost every street corner, offering amazing brews and signature sips. With your friends at your side and a drink in your hand, what more could you need? Well…your dog, for starters. There are many dog-friendly businesses, so you could your pup to a friendly pool game or trivia night. A great idea -- until he yanks the leash out of your hand, knocks over a tray, and trips the server carrying precious pints to parched patrons. The

shatter of a once full beer glass is the saddest sound in the English language. To keep this disaster from becoming a reality, make sure your pup is appropriately socialized and trained for this kind of outing. If your dog isn’t a puppy any more, you can still teach an old dog new tricks. It all comes down to what they’re used to.

them when you’re out and about. Be consistent in praise and discipline, and your dog will learn to trust you more and more.

Regular Exposure The best way to get your dog used to being in public is to expose them to strange people and places on a regular basis. Make a point to regularly bring your good boy or girl to parks, pet supply stores, and anywhere else they can meet new people. This will also give you an idea of where they are in their training and socialization. When your pup is used to new situations, your time at the taproom together may be nearly at hand.

Do Your Research Before showing up at the patio or taproom with your dog, make sure the establishment is indeed pet-friendly and whether it’s BYOWB (Bring Your Own Water Bowl). If your dog eats before going out they will be less likely to drool over each new smell that wafts by. Also, go for a walk or play fetch before arriving. Exercise beforehand will mitigate their energy level and help keep them calm. But do keep them on a leash at all times! No matter how perfect your pup may be, no one is above an occasional excited outburst.

Know When to Opt Out No one knows your dog better than you. If you know your dog isn’t going to fit in where you’re going, then it’s better for them to stay home and safe no matter how they look at you with their big brown eyes. But don’t lose hope -- with enough time, consistency, and exposure, your pup will soon be ready to join the team for your next trivia night!

with three friends, Jesse started making beer by experimenting with home brewing, eventually pooling their funds to purchase a small brewing system. “Like most home brewers, we talked a lot about what we’d do if we had our own brewery, and the more we talked the more realistic it seemed,” Jesse explained. “Pretty soon our brewing sessions were also business strategy meetings, and we realized that we each had a different skill set that would be essential to starting a brewery.” REAL

Drekker Brewing has enjoyed taking part in such an exciting and burgeoning industry. “I think that there’s a growing movement where people are seeking out authenticity in whichever products they buy,” Jesse said. “This definitely isn’t a new phenomenon, but it’s a big part of the reason that small breweries are opening at such an amazing rate.” Jesse believes that creating a product that customers can connect with is the key to a successful brewery. “Today people seek out that connection and want to know where their beer comes from,”

On the other side of the river from Dekker sits Junkyard Brewing Company. When co-owner Aaron Juhnke decided it was time to figure out what to do with his life, he turned to what he loved. “I didn’t know very many other people who were really into craft beer, so I figured there must be a ton of folks out there who could discover and fall in love with the huge spectrum of beer flavors like I had,” he said. When Aaron’s brother Dan graduated from college the duo decided they “either needed to make something

Co-founder Jared Hardy has helped grow Fargo Brewing Company into one of the largest in the area. “Fargo Brewing is the oldest and largest brewery in North Dakota with distribution across North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Western Wisconsin,” he explained. “In 2017 we

shopdinelive.net will make over 40 varieties of beer and package over 12 styles in cans.” As a testament to its growth, the company opened Fargo Brewing Ale House in South Fargo where customers can find a few beers not currently available at their North Fargo taproom. “The increase of breweries in the region is a reflection of the communities we represent,” Jared observed. “Customers are increasingly looking for local, quality products, and beer is no exception.” Jared also points out that North Dakota’s regulatory changes that allow limited, direct sales to customers have made introducing new beers to customers easier than ever. Like other brewmasters, Jared’s love of brewing is part science, part art. “The best thing about my job is that there is always something new to learn; I’m always learning about new ways to improve processes and solve problems in the brewery, which is a lot of fun,” he said. “Seeing the results of those new processes and programs that have been implemented is very rewarding.”

Opening August 2017 Kilstone Brewing is one of the newer players in the area’s craft brewing scene. Marketing and Events Coordinator Paul Hankel is excited about the direction of the industry. “By the end of this year there will be seven or eight of us, which is following a national trend,” he said. “People are getting over more mainstream beer and falling in love with small batch craft.” According to Paul, one of the best aspects of Kilstone is its size. “We are able to do a little more experimentation,” he said. “We have a two-barrel system rather than the larger 16-barrel variety, so we can experiment. If a batch doesn’t turn out right, dumping it isn’t too costly.” Paul is excited to see where the growth of breweries is going to take Kilstone. “I’d like to see a snapshot of three to five years from now,” he said. “I’d be

Wedding p revi e w

Keeping

Bride zilla at Bay by Whitney Grindberg

Planning a wedding is hard. It’s stressful, overwhelming, complicated, and somehow gets increasingly expensive as the big day draws near. It’s no big deal -- only the most important day of your life, right? But no matter how reasonable you think you are, planning a wedding can turn anyone into a “bridezilla” if they’re not cautious. So to keep yourself from biting off any heads, try these ideas to keep the bridezilla at bay!

Guest List - Be Real! A study published in 2014 suggests that the more people you invite to your wedding -- and the less you spend -- the more successful your marriage will be. While these two factors don’t directly impact your marital bliss (or lack thereof), they speak to a larger issue: are you valuing the people in your life, or the things in it? No matter our place in life, this is always an important question we should ask ourselves.

Keep it Short Make the engagement as short as possible. This may seem counterintuitive, but if you have a shorter time limit, it will force you to make otherwise difficult decisions. You won’t have any time to second-guess your choices, which is great given the staggering number of them you’ll face.

Your marriage won’t be perfect, and neither will your wedding day.

Delegation, Delegation, Delegation The less you are personally responsible for, the easier your planning will be. If you trust the taste and judgment of your family and friends, kindly ask them for help as often as you can. If releasing control is difficult for you, bear in mind that you won’t remember most of your wedding day. You won’t even notice the minor details you’re sweating over right now. Just let them go!

shopdinelive.net Pick Your Battles If Aunt Lucille insists on inviting her strange cousin you’ve never met, and allowing her to do so would make every future family gathering easier, sometimes it’s better to give in a little in order to secure a long-term gain. Yes, it’s your day, but you’re not just marrying your fiancé -- there’s an entire family that you’re getting into.

Embrace the Imperfections Your marriage won’t be perfect, and neither will your wedding day. After weeks of searching for the perfect pair of pants for our groomsmen, one of them showed up on the day of the wedding wearing the wrong color pants. I could have freaked out and sent him back to Kohl’s to find the right pair, but then my wedding wouldn’t have been our wedding. Idiosyncrasies will make your day unique rather than imperfect.

Keep Perspective Throughout the planning process, fill a little notebook with all the reasons you’re excited to marry your fiancé. When you’re frustrated, irritated, or about to lose your mind, flip through a few pages and remind yourself of the real reason you’re doing all this. Then, after the wedding, give the book to your new husband to read. It’s not the wedding day that matters so much -- it’s every day afterward. So take a deep breath and try to enjoy the process. It doesn’t feel like it, but the big day will be here before you know it!

Personalized Vows Couples who choose to write their own wedding vows recognize how special such personal gestures are. Writing one’s own vows can impart a personalized and special touch to the ceremony. But as anyone who has stared down a blank piece of paper or blinking cursor can attest, a case of writer’s block may encourage couples to abandon the idea of writing their own vows.

Writing vows can be nerve-wracking. Many couples are unaccustomed to speaking in front of crowds, and then there is the challenge of turning life-altering feelings into language that will appeal to the masses.

Garden Party & Kite Day Celebrating All Things Spring by Jamee Larson

Garden Party

New to this year’s Garden Party will be an introduction to “seed bombing,” a technique of introducing vegetation to land by throwing or dropping seed balls. According to McCormick, the Growing Together Community

The Garden Party will take place at Rheault Farm and provide people of all ages with a chance to get down and dirty like nature intended. Few things signify the changing seasons like gardening. “For many years now, this free event has been a sign that spring has arrived,” explained Katie McCormick, marketing specialist for the Fargo Park District.

Gardens will be on hand to help kids make their own seed bombs. Families will also be able to take home their own seedlings from Probstfield Farm. Other activities at the Garden Party include making bird feeders with the Audubon Society, learning about local foods with Ugly Food of the North, visiting with Don Carey the Bug Man and his creepy crawlies, and meeting plenty of live animals. There will also be a plant walk, face painting, crafts,

Kite Day The following weekend, join others at Lindenwood Park and celebrate the freedom and exhilaration of flying kites. Now in its 19th year, Kite Day has been a favorite spring activity for nearly two decades. “Kite Day is a wonderful family-friendly event where both kids and adults can take advantage of those North Dakotan winds and enjoy a fun pastime,” explained McCormick. You don’t have to be a kite flying expert to participate in Kite Day -- you don’t even need to fly at all! “It’s just a great time to get out of the house with the family and enjoy some time together,” McCormick said. “If you’re not a seasoned kite flyer, come to the event to watch all the kites swooping and soaring over Lindenwood Park.” In addition to the flying, prizes will

be given away to participants throughout the day, and complimentary hot dogs and Pepsi products will be available while supplies last. Both Park District events are a chance to get out of the house and embrace the changing seasons. “Garden Party and Kite Day are both fun, free events that encourage people to come out of hibernation and think Spring,” McCormick said. “The Garden Party especially provides great opportunities for young people to discover a love of the outdoors by providing educational crafts and activities focused on respecting nature.” The Garden Party will take place Saturday, April 29th from 1:30 to 4:30 PM at Rheault Farm. Kite Day will take place on Saturday, May 6th from noon to 3 PM at Lindenwood Park.

Tattoo Parlors:

More Than Just Ink

by Jamee Larson

Tattoos have long been a means of expressing individuality, but the art form has become more mainstream in recent years. It is no longer unacceptable to have one or even multiple tattoos, and you will see tats prominently displayed on the bodies of people in virtually every walk of life. Why have tattoos become so popular? What is it about them that draws people in? I visited with a few experts in the area’s tattoo industry to see if I could find out.

Tailwind Tattoo Ellie Maher is the co-owner of Tailwind Tattoo, where she is also an artist. Maher has worked in the tattoo business since 2000. “I was going to be an architect but hated the math classes, so I got my AAS in business and then started working in a tattoo studio shortly after,” she explained.

•Pets Welcome • Washer & Dryer in Home • Master Suite • Generous Closet Space

Maher has seen the transformation of the tattoo industry firsthand. “It’s really become mainstream. It all started way back when Miami Ink was on TV,” she said. “It got in people’s faces and the industry exploded.” At Tailwind, Maher sees more women than men embracing tattoos. “I think women are just more used to used to changing their appearance often,” Ellie speculated. “It seems to me that most guys are more reluctant to make a sudden change, but that’s only my theory.” Ellie sees people initially drawn to tattoos based on the desire to commemorate a life experience, such as the loss of a loved one,

Along with her husband, Aaron, Ellie believes they can tattoo any style. “Aaron and I tattoo differently and we match our clients with the better person for the job,” she said. “We’re not in it to compete with each other; we’re in it together.” Ellie likes the personal accountability that comes from having only two artists. “We’re solely responsible for each tattoo that walks out of here.” More information on Tailwind Tattoo can be found at tailwindtattoo.com.

shopdinelive.net Addictions Tattoo & Piercing Trent Balvitsch is one of three owners of Addictions Tattoo, one of the most popular tattoo parlors in the region. Although Trent has always been into art, he was initially resistant to becoming a part of the tattoo industry. It wasn’t until a relative got Trent a job judging a tattoo competition in Minneapolis that he became hooked. Trent has also watched the industry transform itself. “It’s definitely changed since the 80s and 90s,” he said. “You get to see all walks of life, all ages, basically everyone is getting tattooed now and it’s definitely not as taboo as it once was, which is a great thing.” For Trent, the job is all about the people. “You get to meet quite a few interesting individuals working in this industry and we wouldn’t have it any other way,” he explained. The ability of a tattoo to express the individuality of an individual is the part of tattooing that intrigues Trent the most, and why he thinks people are so drawn to tattoos. “It is the uniqueness of the tattoos themselves and the fact that no one can take away the meaning of a specific tattoo,” he explained. “Whether it’s for remembrance or because you really like that cartoon character, it all means something different to different people.” Addictions has been operating in Fargo for 21 years. It is the family atmosphere of the shop that keeps customers coming back. “We’ve always had such a steady staff that loves to make our clients feel like they belong,” Trent said. “There’s no reason you should walk into a business and feel like the odd man out.” More information about Addictions Tattoo & Piercing can be found at addictionstat2.com.

Like Ellie and Trent, Noy believes it is the act of expression that brings so many people through the doors of Golden Dragon. “It’s all about the art,” he explained. “If you have a passion for art, you have to love the art of tattooing.” Although Noy admits that some people use tattoos to advertise negative things like gang affiliation, he sees most people as coming from a place of sincerity and sentimentality. Golden Dragon prides itself on treating its customers like family. “We want everyone to feel at home when they come here,” Noy said. “We talk to them and share ideas so we can get to know everyone as our friends.”
