STONE WEST VILLAGE by skaff apartments by David Scheller

With a world that is always changing and growing, it’s important to take stock of our locally owned businesses. Whether they are our farms, our factories, or even our places to live, these home sprung endeavors demonstrate that unique American ability of taking hold of empty land and turning it into something dear. That was Sam F. Skaff’s vision 60 years ago, and today it still burns bright right here in Fargo.

Skaff spent World War II in the Signal Core, operating radio

well. “There’s something my dad always taught me: To

equipment and intercepting Axis transmissions in order to

keep God first, family second, and work third. But work

decode them. When the war ended he stayed in the field

is very important,” said Samuel. This has set the standard

of electronics, only now in a more peaceful way as a door-

for his life and the vision for the company.

to-door Electrolux vacuum salesman in Bismarck, ND. In 1957, Skaff bought his first rental property in Bismarck, marking the beginning of Skaff Apartments. He relocated years later to work as the regional manager for Electrolux in Fargo/Moorhead, and continued to purchase and build property in Moorhead, MN. He eventually decided to part ways with Electrolux to focus on real estate full-time.

In 1994, Samuel purchased 22 acres of farmland in Fargo, and they began slowly developing it.

The city grew

all around their land, making it the prime location for their new flagship apartment building, the recently fully opened Stone West Village in Fargo. The Skaffs set out to make Stone West Village great for the same reason Fargo is, which is its sense of community.

In 1972, Skaff’s son Samuel J. Skaff took over the management from his father. Samuel continued to grow the business in Moorhead, and eventually jumped to the other side of the river and began developing in Fargo as

Today Samuel’s son and two of his daughters work with him at Skaff Apartments. “Our family is blessed to continue my grandpa’s legacy,” said Nate Skaff, Samuel’s son.

“Growing up in the family business, I learned to love everything about giving people a home,” said Julie Stoe, Samuel’s youngest daughter. “That extends beyond giving them four walls and a roof over their heads. You’ve got to create a sense of community to truly make them a home. That’s what we emphasize with Stone West Village. We built it with lots of places for our residents and their friends to come together, including a wellness center, yoga studio, and community room. Our game room has all sorts of activities to conspire over with indoor bocce ball, a pool table, foosball, bubble hockey, and even an arcade machine.” “We’re very pleased to see our residents taking advantage of our amenities when they have company over,” said Jenna Stowers, Samuel’s daughter.

“Our 20-seat theater room is perfect for

entertaining in the winter, especially during the Super Bowl, and our rooftop terrace with its fireplace and grill is very popular with the weekend crowd. We also have a big porch overlooking our babbling brook outside. It’s fully screened, because whatever you think about community, you’d never want to extend it to the mosquitoes!” “We’re proud to host several locally owned businesses on the first floor of Stone West Village as well: our restaurant Cracked Pepper, Adae Salon, Alterations by L, Family Institute, our home goods store Eco Chic Boutique, and Core Health Chiro,” continued Jenna. “Stone West Village is unique to Fargo for the number of amenities we offer.” Indeed, Stone West Village’s comprehensive list of accommodations is the best example of Skaff Apartments’ devotion to their residents’ well-being. And their community is growing -- with only a few months passed after the new building’s second phase of leasing, there are still a few open spots to join fellow Fargoans at the theater, the grill, the pool table, or by the brook.

Maple River Golf Club by David Scheller

“Golf is the infallible test. The man who can go into a patch of rough alone, with the knowledge that only God is watching him, and play his ball where it lies, is the man who will serve you faithfully and well.” -P.G. Wodehouse

In Mapleton just west of Fargo lies the Maple River Golf Club. It takes its name from the river that borders its north and west sides, a winding waterway that keeps the course verdant and the farmland around it so rich. Maple River Golf Club was originally designed in 1965 as a 9 hole course, but expanded to the full 18 in 2000. Now celebrating its 52nd year, the club is expanding its operation yet again while maintaining its core focuses on community and the love of the sport. Maple River Golf Club is run by its general manager and head golf professional Dave Schultz. A three-sport athlete in high school, Fargo native Dave began focusing on golf exclusively in his freshman year at Colorado State and then year-round in the better weather at Texas Christian University. Dave played golf professionally for eight years after graduation, including three in the Nationwide Tour. While based in Fort Worth during his professional career, Dave quickly learned during his travels that your home course isn’t necessarily one near your home; it’s any one where you love to play. “The most important thing is the people you’re around, not necessarily the ground you’re on,” explained Dave. “When you share a passion for golf with someone, all it takes is playing a few holes together and you’ve got a new friend. I’m thrilled to run a course in an area where folks truly love the game.” Indeed, Maple River Golf Club’s mission is to offer itself to all who would like to play. That spirit is embodied right in the course’s humble motto: “The Club in the country.” “Golf clubs ought to belong to anyone who loves golf,” Dave added. “We run things here so that the most people can come to play. We set up our membership so that there is no minimum food purchase requirement. We never charge mid-year assessments, where you’d have to pay extra money halfway through the season just because we’d ask for it. Also, we don’t charge membership fees during all those months when Fargo’s too buried under snow to play. You don’t even have to be a member to play here. That’s how committed we are to offering our course to the public.”

“Golf clubs ought to belong to anyone who loves golf” This inclusive philosophy and the great length of last year’s golf season, which lasted from March 11th to November 13th, has permitted Maple River Golf Club to make some much deserved recent improvements. They used their last year’s success and record membership to heavily invest in their clubhouse. “A beautiful course should have nothing less for its front door, too,” said Dave. In addition to other recent improvements to the course, Maple River Golf Club has only just overhauled their 16th hole, which Dave admits had lacked a certain something, into a far more exciting challenge. This puts it in better company with their notorious 9th hole, arguably the hardest par three in the area with a 220 yard uphill shot from the back tees. If that sounds daunting, there is solace in the 3rd, where it’s very possible to sink a hole in one with only an 8 iron.

Finally, 40 to 50 pairs attend couples night every Friday at 6:30 PM, a great chance to befriend new people and enjoy the beautiful scenery. “I was very lucky to have played professionally,” said Dave.

“Now that I call

Maple River home? Well, I’m still very lucky!” When you have a bad day playing football, you might wind up with a 300 pound linebacker sitting on your head. When you have a bad day skiing, it could mean falling off of a cliff. But a bad day playing golf? That only means you get to play even more golf. Fairies and Wizards Unite As she was setting up for a party, The Grove and Cauldron owner Jen Waagen called her niece for advice. “What color is luck?” she asked as she was preparing the party’s “spells.” It isn’t a question many people

Those that have driven by the beautiful Victorian house at 203 7th St S in Moorhead have likely wondered about its new occupants, especially if they’ve seen guests donning wizard robes and fairy wings being ushered inside. The Grove and Cauldron specializes in fairy or wizard theme parties. Think of it as a magical collaboration between Harry Potter and Disney. Yes, it is that cool! For

“We knew as soon as we saw the building that this was the place,” she said. Along with her brother Marcus Leotta, Jen began the labor intensive process of remodeling the house and bringing it up to code as a commercial building. The imaginative results are tremendous and have the potential to turn every little one’s birthday into a magical experience without equal. “For me, this is a way to inspire creativity and allow kids to step out of their everyday world,” she said. “I want it to be a once-ina-lifetime experience.” The house has three distinct rooms that can each be used for themed parties: The Magician’s Study for wizards, the Fairy Grotto for fairies, and the Grotto for mermaids and pirates. There is also a wish room for presents and a space to indulge in cake or other sweets. For parents,

Fargo Running Company & Great Rides Bike Share by Jamee Larson For many people, summer is an opportunity to kick their fitness regimens into high gear and unload some of that dreaded winter weight. For others, improved health is its own reward, especially if given a gentle nudge by the results of their latest physical. Regardless of the motivating factors, creating a structured fitness routine can be difficult, especially if you are going at it alone. That is where businesses like the Fargo Running Company and Great Rides Bike Share can help.

Fargo Running Company The Fargo Running Company was created in 2007 by Dick Beardsley and Greg Hammes.

Originally called the Dick

Beardsley Running Company, the store sought to provide runners with one-stop shopping for all their running and workout needs. Now owned by Cley Twigg, the business has evolved to become much more than only a retail operation.

For Twigg, running has always been a part of life. “I remember going to road races and watching my dad and brother compete in them. When I got a little older, I started running in the youth races,” he said. “I competed in track and cross country in high school (my dad was my coach), then I competed in college. I still run to this day!” It is that passion that fuels everything Twigg does. “I am as passionate about running today as I was when I first started. If I can pass that same passion along to another runner and have them come to love the sport like I do, that’s a win.”

Today, the Fargo Running Company has become a supportive avenue for runners of all levels. The store supports two weekly group runs, one on Mondays at 6:00 PM and another on Thursdays at 5:30 AM. The Thursday morning run has been going strong since the store opened. The Monday evening run is quickly catching up, however. Recent runs have included over 50 people, including a 10th anniversary celebration in early April. Once a month, the store also runs a supported group run that focuses on longer distances. The recent explosion of online shopping has forced store owners like Twigg to adjust their sales philosophy, putting an increased focus on community events and customer service. “We want to give people who come through our door a unique experience, whether that is with events or our customer service. That’s something you can’t get while shopping online,” Twigg explained. “Giving each person individualized attention is so important and something that many FARGO

places can’t or won’t give.” INTRODUCING

generated over a quarter million rides in its first two years. In addition, the system received a national award for Most Rides Per Bike Per Day both years. “We anticipated two to three rides per bike per day (considered a good standard for a healthy program) and were thrilled to have an average of five to seven, more usage per bike than in New

York, Washington DC, or Paris at our peak times,” Johnson explained. “In fact, we hold the national record for the most rides per bike per day, doubling the previous record by our friends in Austin.”

shopdinelive.net There are currently 11 Great Rides bike stations in Fargo, each equipped with three-speed bikes that can be checked out for $4 per hour. Memberships are also available for $15 a month or $75 for the year. If you are a NDSU student, your student ID provides you with unlimited 30 minute rides. Even better, the clock can be reset and your ride continued by docking and undocking at a station. The bike share program is part of the community’s commitment to providing everyone with affordable fitness opportunities. “We know that bicycles play a positive role in any community and provide several benefits: an active transportation option, exercise, socialization, reduced carbon footprint, and more,” said Johnson. “We want to help more people realize and experience the benefits of cycling. Great Rides Bike Share is just one way we can provide a cycling-centered service that makes it easier for community members to hop on a bike and get on with their days.”

by Jamee Larson When the fitness craze spread two decades ago, fitness centers sprouted up all over the country, and the Fargo/ Moorhead area was no different. It’s impossible to drive even a block or two without running into multiple fitness options, so when Powerturn Fitness Studios broke ground last year, it may not have caused much of a stir -- that is, until people realized Powerturn isn’t just another fitness center. Owners and trainers John and Sara Kosobud grew up in the area before moving to Arizona in 2002. While there, the pair got into cycling and became involved in a workout group. In 2012, the Kosobuds and their two children moved back to the Red River Valley. “We wanted to raise our kids here,” John explained. He and Sara quickly missed their workout group, however, and were not able to find a replacement in the fitness centers in the area. Their solution? Build their own studio so they could duplicate the vibe and motivation they fell in love with in Arizona. When the opportunity arose to share space with a new warehouse that Interstate Battery was building, the pair jumped at the chance.

Nestled next to Urban Plains Pond and featuring gorgeous wood interiors, the Retreat can handle your active lifestyle.

shopdinelive.net “Fitness is really a byproduct of what we do here,” John explained. “It’s all about developing relationships and friendships that lead into fitness.”

They’re those relationships that set

Powerturn Fitness Studios apart from other gyms. There is nothing mass-produced about their product. In fact, the small groups and individualized attention has become the hallmark of the business. “We want to create a sense of community,” John said. Powerturn offers open strength and cycling classes as well as closed workshop groups, which are committed eight-week programs designed for big results. “It is a 360-degree approach that includes nutrition, mindset, and fitness,” explained John. “One needs all three things to make big changes in life.” The studio utilizes a heart monitoring system to make sure all members are training within their cardio zone. This type of dialed-in training is another way that Powerturn is unique. The cycling workouts are all rhythm based. Rides include choreographed drills with everyone on the same beat. “Forty-five minutes go by very quickly,” John said. John and Sara make it a point to take a personal interest in all their clients. “We know everybody that walks through the doors,” he said, adding that they have about 300 people that come on a regular basis. “We are very committed to helping them meet their goals.” Very few gyms in the area can promise that type of relationship between member and owner. For John, those relationships are precisely the reason they started Powerturn in the first place. When not training regular members, John provides off-ice training for local hockey players. From April to October of last year, he trained 75 players ages 9-18. A former hockey player, John appreciates the opportunity to combine his love for the sport with his passion for working with kids. THREE BEARS HONEY CO. Kind words are like honey – enjoyable and healthful. (Proverbs 16:24) by Jamee Larson Have you ever seen a bee and were thankful for the honey it makes? If you are like most people, you likely think of bees as little more than a nuisance, an unwanted visitor to your backyard barbecue or day at the park. In reality, bees are amazing creatures that produce the delicious honey so many of us enjoy. Does that mean you need to have a hive vibrating in your backyard? Of course not. That’s what people like Paul Luthi are for.

For the past 35 years, Paul has been the owner and primary beekeeper at Three Bears Honey in Moorhead.

He now works with his son,

Travis, continuing the family tradition that

started with his grandfather, who was also a beekeeper. Paul fell in love with the profession while watching his grandfather and spending time with a commercial beekeeper.

reasons. Paul sees deadly mites, difficulties finding good areas to forage for pollen, and the use of chemicals as the biggest threat to bees. Poor weather can also negatively factor into honey production. For Paul, the opportunity to work outdoors with a species he is captivated by is the perfect profession. “I enjoy working out in nature with the fresh air and birds, and I love producing a product that people enjoy,” he said. “There is so much to learn about bees. Interesting Facts about Honey Bees: •

According to the National Honey Board, there are at least 300 varieties of honey in the US.

Honey is the only insect-created food with therapeutic, medicinal, and cosmetic value.

A bee colony consists of one queen, several hundred male

drones, and more than 30,000 female workers. •

The queen is the largest bee in the hive. She can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day!

On average, a worker bee will make 1/12 teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. About 500 honeybees work to make one pound of honey.

Bees must visit approximately two million flowers to make one pound of honey.

Honey bees fly at 15 miles per hour. Their wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, which makes their distinctive buzzing sound.

Gardening without a Garden

Don’t let your small space hinder your growing dreams.

Would you love to grow your own fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers, but think you lack the space necessary for a successful garden? If your tiny balcony or lack of a yard is hindering your green thumb, don’t worry! There are many alternative options to grow things without a traditional garden. PLAINS ART

Bringing Out the Child in All of Us Picasso once said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” The Plains Art Museum is trying to ensure that everyone in the Fargo/Moorhead area has an opportunity to embrace the artist inside of them and nurture the creative spirit within us all. Thanks to the PlainsArt4All initiative, admission to the museum will be free

beginning July 1st. Membership to the museum will still be available and continue to offer a variety of perks and discounts. “Plains Art Museum has the opportunity to put North Dakota on the cultural map, but there is also an opportunity for the museum to serve as a community space for people of all backgrounds,” explained director and CEO Andrew Maus. “In order for us to serve in these ways, we need to remove the admission fee barrier and extend our mission. PlainsArt4All is our way of saying to our community, ‘We are yours!’”

It’s All About the Children The museum has always had a strong focus on developing programs for children, and removing the admission fee should bring even more budding artists

An art lounge on the museum’s second floor is full of art-inspired toys and books, giving children the opportunity to engage with art in a stimulating manner. The goal of such programs is to foster a love of art that will follow children into adulthood.

benefits.

Nowadays

fermentation usually means that our apple juice has gone bad and needs to be dumped down the sink, but some fermented foods and drinks can make great, healthy additions to nearly every diet!

There is no health food “magic bullet”, so keep it balanced and reasonable and do go slowly when first starting. Kefir (pronounced kuh-feer, but in American-ese it’s key-fur) and kombucha (pronounced com-boo-cha) are two popular fermented beverages on the health scene right now, and together they could pack a powerful punch of health benefits. Kefir is similar to yogurt: it’s dairy based, tangy, and can be enjoyed as a beverage or used as a substitute for sour cream. Kombucha is slightly effervescent, tea based, and has a crisp fermented bite to it. Teri Erhardt, a local well-being consultant specializing in worksite wellness, offered some insight into the nature of these two hard to spell and even harder to pronounce beverages.

What are some of the benefits of adding kefir and kombucha to your diet? The majority of your immune system is in your gut. For most of us, eating a standard American diet for much of our lives has left us with a less than perfect gut -- one that’s out of whack with too many bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria. We need both kinds in order to be healthy, but when our guts are out of balance we’re more vulnerable to sickness and disease. Good bacteria from foods like kefir and kombucha can help to restore balance and support a healthy immune system, heal our guts, and eliminate digestive problems. If someone wants to start incorporating more fermented beverages into their diet, how would you recommend they begin? 28

strains that you find in yogurt.

Should you buy fermented drinks at the store or make your own? You can buy kefir grains at pretty much any health food store in the metro area to get started. The packaging will come with easy-tofollow instructions, and there are a plethora of food blogs out there to help if you get stuck. Kombucha is more of a secret club -- you either have to know someone to give you a “mother” culture, or you have to go online for one. Thankfully, this movement has gained enough momentum that it’s not too hard to find what you’re looking for on the internet! If you aren’t feeling adventurous enough to try brewing your own drinks at home, delicious kefir and kombucha drinks can be found in grocery and health food stores throughout the Fargo/Moorhead area. Be cautious of sugar levels in some drinks, though. A quick glance at the nutrition label will tell you if your “healthy” drink is not actually at all! There is no health food “magic bullet”, so keep it balanced and reasonable and do go slowly when first starting. Make sure you consult a health professional before making any dietary changes if you have a unique health situation such as autoimmune issues or are pregnant or breastfeeding. We live in an amazing time that combines the wisdom of the past with modern technology. Health foods like kefir and kombucha combine these past and current understandings to give us a bright, healthful future! |
