Pay It Forward...

According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 318,590 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed among men and women in 2017. Pink It Forward - a local non-profit whose mission is to provide hope and empowerment by enriching the lives of all those affected by breast cancer – is doing what they can to make a difference in the lives of each and every one of those individuals.

The organization, founded in 2013, is comprised of 4 family members, 3 of which have beat breast cancer. Within the last 3 generations, 10 women within the family have been diagnosed with breast cancer; something no one takes lightly. Each of their experiences, however, helped influence what has grown to be an up and coming mainstream non-profit grown right here in North Dakota.

® “Our biggest goal in creating Pink It Forward was to make an impact in the lives of those going through breast cancer now; our care packages aim to bring light to what can be a very dark time.” says Kayla Leier, the only founding member who has not yet been diagnosed. Wrapped in pink tissue paper, each package contains items that help alleviate the often painful side effects experienced with treatment, whether emotional or physical. Deanne Leier, co-founder and 10 year breast cancer survivor, used her journey when providing input on items to include in the care packages. “It was really hard for me to lift my arms after my double-mastectomy. Curling up in a robe on the couch and watching a movie was my safe place.”

...our care packages aim to bring light to what can be a very dark time. Such a mission, however, comes at a cost. With the ambition to paint the town pink, the organization has a long list of events lined up over the next few months to not only raise awareness, but to also raise much needed funding. Kayla explains the growth they’ve seen in 2017 - “This year we went from an average of 15 packages per week, to at times 100+. LESSER-KNOWN INFORMATION ABOUT

HALLOWEEN GREAT MOVE-IN

INCENTIVES

Halloween is a day of costumes, hijinks and an often unhealthy helping of sugary sweets. Many celebrants know that Halloween evolved from ancient Celtic festivals, such as Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the dawn of winter. Celts were no longer spending long days in the pastures, and so they gathered in

their homes to tell stories and wait out the winter. When Christianity spread, Halloween became intertwined with a feast day dedicated to the saints and deceased loved ones. “All Hallows Eve,” eventually got shortened to “Hallowe’en,” and then Halloween.

The word “witch” is thought to come from the Olde English word “wicce,” meaning “wise woman.” Witches once were held in high regard.

with currants. The more cakes a person received, the more prayers he or she would promise to the dead relatives of the cake donors.

Witches may have rubbed a sacred ointment made with a hallucinogenic herb onto their skin. This gave them a feeling of flying, and if they had been fasting, they felt even giddier. Many witches rode on horseback, but those who were poor traveled on foot and carried a broom to launch themselves over streams.

Prior to that, brothers Dan and Aaron Juhnke sold kegs out of a little spot behind a local homebrew store. It is safe to say that Junkyard has now moved out of the dugout and into the big leagues. “Our business has grown beyond our expectations,” Aaron said. “We’re brewing way more beer than we had ever imagined we would, and we’re hosting a lot more people on a nightly basis than we ever dreamed.”

As for expansion plans, the move that seems to make the most sense to us would be to open another taproom location somewhere.” It is hard to believe there are still people who haven’t enjoyed one of Junkyard’s many craft beers. The biggest reason seems to be that some people just don’t like beer. Although regular breast cancer screenings via mammography do not prevent breast cancer, they do alert women to when they have breast cancer in its earlier stages and when it’s more treatable, and they do save lives. For most women, regular mammograms

There are a number of other ways to help prevent breast cancer from occurring. These are the limitation of alcohol, the avoidance of tobacco, maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, choosing to breastfeed, limitation of the doses of and duration of hormone therapy, and avoidance of radiation and environmental pollution. Certain diets help to prevent the occurrence of breast cancer as well. For example, women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts might reduce their risk of breast cancer. We applaud the efforts of people everywhere who help to bring public awareness to breast cancer this October and throughout the year. Breast cancer is a dreadful thing, and we dearly hope for the day when it may be done away with once and for all.

Buffalo River Pumpkin Patch by Jamee Larson

s soon as the first few gusts of fall air hit the Red River Valley, children start making plans for Halloween. Heck, we now see stores stocking the latest and greatest costumes just after the Fourth of July. This is progress --

the more time a kid has to plan out the perfect Halloween costume, the better! Trick-or-treating is a time-honored Halloween tradition that enthralls children of all ages. It certainly isn’t the holiday’s only one, though, as it’s also a great time for family outings. One such option is Glyndon, Minnesota’s Buffalo River Pumpkin Patch, a locally-owned and operated business that has been providing exhilarating yet family-friendly Halloween fun for well over a decade. The Pumpkin Patch is owned by Mike and Mindy Halvorson, along with Mike’s parents. “We originally got involved with the Pumpkin Patch by providing horse-drawn rides for the Tonnesen Pumpkin Patch before it closed,” Mike explained. The Halvorsons then opened Buffalo River at their home in 2004. “Each year we try to add or change things up a bit to improve the Pumpkin Patch for our visitors,” he said. “This year we expanded our pick-your-own patch from one to two patches. We are excited to offer more space for families to find the perfect pumpkin.” Over the years, Buffalo River has grown into an amalgamation of exciting activities for all ages. In addition to horse-drawn rides through the Not So Scary Haunted Forest, a petting zoo, barrel car rides, a straw maze, and the opportunity to stroll through Papa Bob’s Village, families can enjoy a game area, Young Tykes Trike Track, duck races, and many photo opportunities. “We love that the Pumpkin Patch is a family event and watching families spending a fall day together,” Mike explained. “Some of our customers make sure to check in with us year after year, and it is great to be part of their family traditions.” Mike believes that Halloween continues as such a popular family holiday because it offers something for everyone to enjoy. “Carving a pumpkin and dressing up in costumes is something families, couples, and friends can do together,” he said. “I think people not only love Halloween, but fall in general, with the colorful leaves, football, and cooler weather.” To those that have never been to the Buffalo River Pumpkin Patch, Mike would like to extend a sincere invitation. “Buffalo River Pumpkin Patch can be a deceiving

Pride of Dakota by Jamee Larson

You have likely noticed stores around the state selling products with a blue, white, and yellow “Pride of Dakota, North Dakota Originals” sticker on them. You may not have given the sticker much thought, but it is very important to the state’s small businesses and independent entrepreneurs. That little label proves its product has the remarkable distinction of having been made in North Dakota. There is no better way to support North Dakota folks than by buying Pride of Dakota products.

In 1985, then Commissioner of Agriculture H. Kent Jones created Pride

Pride of Dakota is unique in that it supports all types of North Dakota businesses, not just one industry. “Our members vary greatly in size, structure, and the products they manufacture,” Goehring said. “Currently, there are more than 40 companies who have been members for 20 years or longer.”

The company harvests driftwood, birches, old barn wood, and fence posts to make decorative snowmen, Santas, mirrors, photo frames, and more.

Best Halloween Movies by David Scheller

H

alloween has the best movies. They teach us about unconventional uses for gardening tools, that it’s usually inadvisable to combine the DNA of multiple animals, and that being a jerk is

a surefire way to get impaled on something. There are thousands of movies to appreciate during this time of year, so it’s easy to lose your way. Lucky you, though -- I’m going to tell you which ones you have no business missing.

The Thing (1982)

LUNCH SPECIALS DAILY

SUNDAY FUNDAY! Free Darts & Pool all day. Bingo at 2PM

Like most great movies, The Thing starts out with a scene of Norwegian scientists in a helicopter hunting a Siberian Husky across Antarctica. I’m not going to spoil the movie by telling you why they have it out for the dog, but it’s one of the only reasons I could condone for hunting a cute pup. The Thing features a bearded, scotch-fueled Kurt Russell fighting otherworldly monstrosities in an Antarctic science lab with Molotov cocktails and a flamethrower. (Flamethrowers, as everyone knows, are standard equipment in science labs.) The Thing is tense, claustrophobic, paranoid, and a great lesson in why you can only rely on Kurt Russell in a tight situation.

Eraserhead (1977) Eraserhead is a touching and sentimental look at what it would be like to raise a horrible screeching devil baby from the comfort of a mildewed hotel room in the middle of a gloomy cityscape. This is a David Lynch movie, the same man who brought us Twin Peaks, so when I say I understand

what goes on in Eraserhead it’s because I understand the subtle nuances of film as an artform and not because I want to sound like I am smart. I like the part where the woman with the weird face performs a song and dance number in the radiator. It symbolizes radiators.

great Italian & American cuisine! UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP & MANAGEMENT

It Follows (2014) In It Follows, a teenage girl is unceasingly pursued by an unstoppable demon set on proving that anyone can become double-jointed through enough brute force. The demon (or ghost, or whatever it is) is invisible to everyone except the person it’s set on maiming, and to them it can appear like anyone it wants: a disheveled old woman, a seven foot tall man, or even their dad. It Follows is at once a tribute to classics like Halloween and The Night of the Hunter as well as it is a compelling movie of its own. If you want even fewer reasons to trust strangers, this is your movie.

can empathize, because I sprained an ankle playing laser tag last Sunday and I have a bunch of product descriptions for a bathroom furniture catalog due next week. In Misery you get to see James Caan (the guy who got shot a hundred times at a toll booth in The Godfather) wallop Kathy Bates (who had the greatest scene ever in About Schmidt) over the head with a typewriter. This is very symbolic, I think.

Halloween by David Scheller

Trivia

Morton, Illinois holds the lofty title of “Pumpkin Capital of the World.” It is there where 85% of the world’s canned pumpkin is produced, and the annual Morton Pumpkin Festival is celebrated in honor of that achievement. Thanks to exponential mathematics, if one zombie bit a new person every day, then the entire world would be nothing but zombies in just over a month. That would be horrible. Despite his bloody reputation, Dracula inspiration Vlad the Impaler is considered a hero in his native Transylvania. His somewhat uncouth tactics helped to preserve his land against a much larger invading force, which is why he kept the stakes so high. Black cats are not a sign of bad luck everywhere. In England (except Yorkshire), it’s good luck to have a black cat cross your path. In Scotland, a black cat arriving unexpectedly at your doorstep is an omen of good fortune.

In Japan, black cats are particularly good luck for single

women, as they’re believed to attract potential boyfriends. Mice and small birds universally consider all cats bad luck, however. Despite what the ending of the movie would have you believe, the house where Poltergeist (1982) took place still stands today. People who presumably haven’t seen the movie currently live there. In the movie Cujo (1983), five St. Bernards, one mechanical dog head, a man in a dog costume, and even a rottweiler worked together to portray the titular rabid pup. One of the St. Bernards’ trainers would later go on to redeem the breed’s image in the cutesy movie Beethoven (1992).

The biggest bat in the world is the giant golden-crowned flying fox, a fruit eating brute with a five and a half foot wingspan. The finest bat in the world is the Louisville Slugger. It is a giant, filthy, disembodied foot that will demand to be washed upon intruding in your home. If denied, it will wreck everything in your house. Washing it right away is advisable.
