Celebrating 20 Years, History and Future.. The name Avalon goes way back to the year of 1126 AD, being an island where King Arthur selected to heal his battle wounds. The name Avalon comes from the word "apple, or fruit", and is where King Arthur's famous sword, "Excalibur" was foraged. We celebrate that culinary legend with many of our famous culinary entrees such as our tantalizing Herb-roasted Pork and Apple Chutney.

Spring Cleaning Tips by Jamee Larson

Few things usher out the cold, stale doldrums of winter like a healthy dose of spring cleaning. I’m talking about tossing open those shades,

Feeling the urge to spring clean is one thing. Knowing how to do it better

you know it, your house will smell, look, and feel as fresh as that warm

and smarter is another. The first thing you should do is get organized. Decide what needs to be done and make a to-do list that is challenging yet doable. Include the other members of the family -- especially the children. Give everyone several tasks they can complete without much struggle. Reward little successes and celebrate jobs well done. Who says cleaning can’t be fun? Now that everyone has received their marching orders, there are several tips you can employ to produce impressive results without breaking your back! Consider the following as you begin your quest:

PROPERTY RESOURCES GROUP

Before you begin, make sure you have all the supplies that you need. Nothing derails a spring cleanup effort faster than a lack of supplies. If you don’t own a window squeegee, get one. Not only do they make window cleaning streak free, they can also be used to remove pet hair from carpets and upholstery. When cleaning windows, forego the expensive cleaners and make your own solution instead. Equal parts white vinegar and warm water works wonders. No vinegar? Use one teaspoon of dish detergent instead.

Do not wash windows in the hot sun. The heat will dry out your solution before you have a chance to wipe it away, leaving hard-to-deal-with streaks. Do not neglect your window treatments. Vinyl blinds can be removed, taken outside, and hosed down. Wooden blinds can be treated with a mild combination of wood cleaner and hot water. Check to see if your draperies can be laundered in a traditional washer/dryer. If not, hanging them outside on a clear, breezy day will do wonders.

Dusting is usually the bane of any cleaner’s existence. Although still a tedious task in many ways, it is possible to save some time when dusting by starting high and moving down. This will catch dust as it falls without forcing you to redo anything. Dryer sheets work as inexpensive alternatives to pricey dust cloths and generally do just as well, if not better. For hard to reach spaces, tie a towel to the end of a broom and dust ceilings, walls, door frames, etc. Don’t forget to clean ceiling fans and light fixtures. When you get to the bathroom, dryer sheets can also be used to remove buildup on shower doors and even ceramic tile. For toilets, use a can of cola to get your bowl sparkling clean. (For cola lovers out there, this is likely a very disturbing thought.) In both the bathroom and kitchen, a typical sponge can get dirty very fast. Instead of tossing a used sponge, put it in the microwave for one minute and it will reappear clean and disinfected. On the topic of microwaves, get rid of baked on food by filling a microwave safe bowl with 1-2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Heat for five minutes and those stubborn stains will come out in a jiffy. Cleaning a stovetop can also give one fits, but it doesn’t have to. After cleaning it, rub the top with a small amount of car wax and buff with a normal towel. Not only will your stovetop shine, spills will wipe up quickly and easily. Use spring cleaning as a time to empty out places that can quickly and easily get bogged down with stuff. Medicine cabinets, hall closets, and refrigerators are especially good targets for your cleanup efforts. In the case of expired medicines, contact your local hospital or police department for information on safe and proper drug disposal.

CAT TRIVIA

“In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” -Terry Pratchett

Bastet (also known as B’sst) was an ancient Egyptian feline deity. Originally revered as a ferocious lioness warrior, Bastet’s image gradually softened until she became the goddess of perfume and house cats.

A study conducted by the University of Tokyo in 2013 revealed that

It was once rumored that Tibbles, a lighthouse keeper’s cat,

exterminated an entire species of bird on a New Zealand island back in 1894. Although Tibbles certainly did no favors for the flightless Lyall’s wren, experts now attribute their ultimate downfall to additional, non-Tibbles related factors.

The British Post Office formally hired cats to keep mice in check from

1868 until 1984. The most legendary among them is Tibs the Great,

one cat,” Tibs the Great weighed 23 pounds at the time of his death. This was more likely due to him living in a staff dining room rather than his hunting proficiency.

a special medal for her bravery.

Cheshire Cat Chess is played like normal chess but with two additional rules: Once a space has been used, it may never be used again, and a king may move like a queen during its first move.

Cats have made their own mark in history. Accidental cat prints have been found on a 1st century Roman roof tile, the pages of a 15th century Croatian manuscript, and a 16th century Japanese plate.

In 2012, Sugar the cat of Boston, Massachusetts fell 200 feet from her owner’s 19th story window. She landed on a patch of mulch and walked away from the ordeal unscathed. Sugar hit the ground at approximately 77 miles per hour.

Voice actor Mel Blanc once explained that Sylvester the Cat’s voice is identical to Daffy Duck’s except that it has an even more exaggerated lisp and is not sped up in post-production.

President Jimmy Carter lived in the White House with his pet Siamese cat named Misty Malarkey Ying-Yang. Contrary to what most people think, it was public opinion of President Carter’s cat’s name that cost him the reelection, not the failure of Operation Eagle Claw.

The

King Tutankhamun. It went like this:

BEVILL by David Scheller

Loosely translated, the joke goes “Why did our bird-headed divinity Horus cross the stone path? To get to the other side, where there were many loaves of bread and fatted calves. How great is the king for our people!” Admittedly, this joke has lost some of its punch over the past 3,000 years. That is why joke telling needs innovators, people who are not afraid to stand up in front of a crowd with the simple and terrifying goal of making the people in it laugh. Fargo has Fred Bevill for this very purpose. Fred grew up in Lake Tahoe, California,

But, my agent persisted, and against my better judgment I went to Fargo anyway.” As fate would have it, someone very important was in Fargo’s audience that night.

Fred’s

future wife would see him for the first time then, and they married shortly thereafter. They now have two sons and live together in Fargo. “My wife calls me the one-night stand who never went home,” Fred joked. “I imagine a lot of parents have some pretty neat stories for their kids about how they were born. Mine are probably the only ones who owe their existence to the fact that Hollywood writers were having trouble paying off their mortgages.” Although he’ll always keep Fargo as his base of operations, Fred now travels all around the country to perform on cruise ships, at corporate functions, and in clubs. “I never go to the office and wish I was somewhere else, because a lot of the time my office is a cruise ship,” Fred said, although he noted that much of his work travel is not as luxurious as

Winter at

NEW PUBLISHER, Red RiveR Zoo SAME FANTASTIC MAGAZINE. by David Scheller

The genius of Red River Zoo is that they work with North Dakota’s climate rather than against it.

This isn’t to say they haven’t got

creatures who’d rather stay indoors when it’s cold out. If you could ask their turtles and tarantulas what they think of the winter, they’d likely give it scathing reviews. Their heartier beasts approve of the cold, however, and it’s because of them that Red River Zoo stays open year-round. Here are some of the winterproof stoics you may see lounging outdoors right now.

Red River Zoo had to develop special pens just to contain them during medical examinations. They’re very agile in spite of their stocky legs as well, and they may be found bouncing around mountains as if they were inflated with helium. If the Sichuan Takin looks familiar, that may be because you recognize it from Beauty and the Beast -- it’s actually the inspiration for one of the titular characters. Can you guess which one?

They possess thumb-like projections to assist in gripping bamboo and occasional hitchhiking. The red panda is known to live alongside its cousin the giant panda, as they both relish the bamboo that grows in China’s mountainous regions. This means Kung Fu Panda isn’t a total fiction, although in real life red pandas only share territory with giant pandas, not martial arts secrets.

Pick Your Battles If Aunt Lucille insists on inviting her strange cousin you’ve never met, and allowing her to do so would make every future family gathering easier, sometimes it’s better to give in a little in order to secure a long-term gain. Yes, it’s your day, but you’re not just marrying your fiancé -- there’s an entire family that you’re getting into.

Keep Perspective Throughout the planning process, fill a little notebook with all the reasons you’re excited to marry your fiancé. WEDDING GUIDE

LeeAnne’s Bridal

by David Scheller

LeeAnne’s Bridal earned some statewide attention a couple of years ago for giving free wedding dresses to military and first responder brides.

Imagine that: Coming

home from serving our nation in some sandblasted place, finally able to settle down in hometown North Dakota, seeing your beautiful bride as a rhapsody in lace on your much anticipated wedding day, and knowing that your community loves and cares for you. LeeAnne's Bridal owner Cindy Dokken may not want such a credit, but it’s hers nonetheless. LeeAnne’s Bridal specializes in helping their clientele look their absolute best on the most important days of their lives.

Their

wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, and tuxedos are always carefully tailored and custom fitted to bring out their wearers’ best traits, and they’re open every day of the week save for summer Sundays on 4340 13th Avenue SW in Fargo. If you’re planning a wedding, go there any time to meet with an experienced wardrobe specialist who will help you understand how to dress for the big day.

shopdinelive.net Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews was founded in Fargo in 2014, and in four short years their dedication to delicious and unpretentious burgers has earned them locations in three states. Sickies offers a nostalgic 50’s Route 66 roadside diner setting, the perfect ambiance in which to set into one of their 50 signature burgers. Highlights include the Sickies Burger, a tower of bacon, fried egg, pulled pork, and onion rings, the Pizza Burger, the perfect marriage of America’s two greatest inventions, and the County Fair Burger, just the ticket for Midwesterners going through cheese curd withdrawals. Tired of conventional buns? Try the Glazed Doughnut Burger, or go really nuts with the Twin Cam, a work of art lovingly nestled between two grilled cheese sandwiches. Sickies keeps a rotating selection of 50 beers on tap, too. 50 burgers, 50 beers -- that’s math anyone can do!
