Fargo Bar-Go by David Schellar

A city runs on two things: Our willingness to contribute something valuable to society, and our freedom to try to forget said valuable contributions by having drinks. Work and booze are the inhalations and exhalations of a healthy people. Fargo therefore has the healthiest people around thanks to the embarrassment of riches it posses in the form of bars. These are only a few local places where you can steep your noodle in the stuff in anticipation of another productive morning after.

The Bomb Shelter The Bomb Shelter is, ironically, a place you go to in order specifically to get bombed. This cheerful neon watering hole boasts explosive music and the requisite pizza, burger, and wing heavy bar fare, but the real stars of the show are their fifty specialty shots for only $3 each. There are too many shots to list and nearly just as many that are too bawdily named to print here, but they include the Chuck Norris, a cherry vodka and energy drink concoction that has a powerful kick, the Blueberry Pancake made from Buttershots, blueberry schnapps, and orange juice, and the Holy Hand Grenade with hazelnut liqueur, amaretto, and Bailey’s dropped in Coke. If you drink all fifty shots you join The Bomb Squad and receive a complimentary T-shirt.

Würst Bier Hall Not having beer? That’s the worst. Having lots and lots of beer? That’s the Würst! Würst Bier Hall offers a variety of draft beers by local Fargo breweries Drekker Brewing Company and Fargo Brewing Company in addition to German Hefeweizens, American pale ales, and everything else you could want from all around the world. Their special challenge is “Das Boot,” a traditional German drinking game that revolves around a special set of rules for drinking a tremendous pour of beer from a giant, boot-shaped glass. Würst Bier Hall’s menu is inspired by all things Germanic and offers sausages, schnitzel, hamburgers, and spaetzle, although curiously bahn mi sandwiches seem to have snuck in there. (If you drink too many beers and get frisky, they’ll bahn yu.)

Fargo One everyday item we rarely put much thought into is our soap. If you think it’s all pretty much the same, then oh, how wrong you are! Handmade soap is better for both the environment and for your skin, and once you’ve tried it you’ll never reach for your old bar again.

Whether purchasing soap as a

gift or to stock your own home, keep local, handmade products in mind.

Fortunately,

Fargo has a variety of soapmakers to fulfill your every need.

The Honey B Soap Company Brittany Sinclair founded The Honey B Soap Company in West Fargo in 2012.

She was

interested in reducing her family’s exposure to harsh chemicals, and she quickly realized that many other parents feel the same way. A former high school science teacher, Sinclair has a background in chemistry which comes in handy to her mission.

Brittany’s cold

process soaps are crafted without GMO ingredients and utilize local ingredients like beeswax, honey, and herbs. Her dedication to avoiding potentially harmful ingredients sets her soaps and best-selling bath bombs apart. “I care about the impact my products have on people’s bodies as well as to our planet,” says Sinclair. She has all of Fargo to thank: “Our community is the reason I am where I am. Without the support of local people and businesses I wouldn’t be successful.

I am

continually humbled and amazed.”

HomeSpun Chick HomeSpun Chick is a labor of love for soapmaker Karey Hotchhalter. She made her very first bar of soap with her son as a 4H project back in 2011. Now she sells her soap through three stores in Jamestown, including Gifts from the Heart where she works.

What makes

Hotchhalter’s soaps unique is a very special ingredient indeed -milk from her very own goats. Goat’s milk makes a naturally mild soap, ideal for irritated, dry, or sensitive skin. HomeSpun Chick makes lotions crafted with vitamin-rich goat’s milk as well. Are you interested in trying your hand at soapmaking as well? It is a laborious yet highly rewarding task, and not one to be taken lightly. Hotchhalter has some words of wisdom for aspiring soapmakers: “Learn as much as you can about soapmaking before you start, and never stop learning after that. In the five years I have been making soap and lotions, I am learning something new almost everyday.” Personally, I’m content to leave soapmaking to one of Fargo’s experts.

Mother and daughter Marceia Andreasen and Kelly Falk have always shared a passion for shopping at boutiques, especially together. Finding a new one and all of the exciting and oftentimes unique items in it brings them the joy of discovery, sweetened even more by the time they spend together. So why not, they figured, open their own boutique and make the eternal hunt that much more rewarding? That’s precisely what they did. Kelly left her marketing job, and Marceia carved out a hefty chunk of her free time when she wasn’t school teaching, and together in May of 2015 they opened their boutique Kindred People in Alexandria, Minnesota. Following great success there, they opened their second location in downtown Fargo last August. “When we first started out,” said Marceia, “we weren’t even sure whether Kelly would have to take a part-time job in addition to the boutique. We were floored by the support of the community, however, and turnout has been so great that Kelly is pleased to work for Kindred People now as her only job!” Kindred People specializes in ladies’ apparel, jewelry, and accessories, as well as home décor and gifts including men’s and children’s clothing. “We prioritize carrying goods made by local artisans around Fargo, North Dakota, and Minnesota,” explained Kelly. “We have just started carrying an exclusive line of North Dakota state pride apparel which we designed with the aid of various artists.” Marceia and Kelly are also proud to offer their newest line of apparel by Free People, a timeless, free spirited, and bohemian look. 12

We also scour sites like Instagram and Etsy to find artists whose goods might otherwise only be available online.”

“I’m 46, and Kelly is 25, so we get to team up to bring clothing to a wide age range of people,” said Marceia. “We strive to cater to every taste, and we dress people for casual and formal events alike, and even just for comfy days spent home. Whatever the occasion for it might be, though, we only carry the highest quality clothing. Our goal is to have something wonderful for everyone who walks through our door.” “We’ve mulled over opening a third location,” said Kelly, “but right now we’re focused on really appreciating what makes Fargo’s style unique and catering to it as best as we can. We are truly fortunate to have a store in a city with such fine artists to work with and clients to dress!”

The sport of purring originated in England in the early 17th century. A purrer holds onto his opponent’s collar and attempts to kick at their shins until he forces them to the ground. The loser cries out “sufficient” when he has had enough. Success in purring requires agility, the ability to endure pain, and strong shins.

WINTER MOVIES by David Scheller

The Shining (1980) The Shining is a sweet and sentimental look at how family relationships are tested when a son, mother, and father become snowbound together in an empty mountain lodge. Each one initially finds their own solitary way of passing the time: Little Danny goes cycling and fosters an imaginary friendship, Wendy experiments with cooking and ham radio operation, and Jack works on his writing. In the end it becomes the father’s job to realize the importance of family cohesion. How Jack breaks down doors and navigates the maze that is the family unit is inspirational, and the end of his character arc is truly chilling..

Frozen (2010) When three skiers are abandoned on a ski resort chairlift overnight, they’re forced to make dire decisions or face certain doom. (I thought this was an odd movie request from my five-year-old niece, but being the “cool” uncle that I am, I decided to let her watch it. We don’t talk anymore.) Great CGI effects on the ravenous, circling pack of wolves!

Happy Feet (2006) In Happy Feet there are all these penguins, but get this: They can talk. As strange as that sounds, the movie never once addresses its absurd premise. I vaguely recall some other message about love or diving for fish or something, but I was too hung up on all the crazy talking birds to pay much attention to it. And get this: The penguins are birds, right? But they can’t even fly! I’m giving this movie a 2/10, too nonsensical to enjoy as anything other than a cinematic curio, but marginally redeemed by the voice acting of the guy who played Frodo in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. At least those movies make sense.

Fargo (1996) I always thought that “Fargo” was a funny choice of title for this movie, seeing as how the majority of it takes place in Minnesota. I guess a title like “Chaska,” “Mounds View,” or “Chanhassen” wouldn’t have played to a wider audience. This deadpan depiction of high crime in the Midwest is the ultimate example of black humor, a study in how the bubbliest people can commit the lowest acts. Steve Buscemi gives

Michelle Sailer:

Cell-ebration by David Scheller Artists can find inspiration in the most peculiar things. When Canadian novelist Robertson Davies envisioned a woman hit in the head by a snowball, it spurred him to write the 825 page long Deptford Trilogy. When cartoonist Jack Kirby witnessed a woman lift a car in order to save her baby from being stuck under it, he came up with the idea for the Incredible Hulk. Moorhead artist and art teacher Michelle Sailer has found the inspiration for her work from a similarly unlikely source: cancer cells.

A few years ago, one of Michelle’s colleagues had to miss the beginning of the school year because she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Michelle and her art students wanted to do whatever they could to help their friend, so they got to thinking about ways to help her cope during treatment. They looked at healthy cells under a microscope, appreciated their characteristics, and together created a big healing collage of cells for her to look at every morning. Michelle was taken with the meaning behind their work, so Cell-ebration was born. All of the pieces in Michelle’s Cell-ebration series are inspired by microbiology. Her portraits of cellular cultures are microcosms, swarms of colorful jellybean forms playfully jumbled together. She uses other media like fabric, paint, and gemstones to make larger, framed original art. A great many of Michelle’s pieces are themed

shopdinelive.net after the color of a type of cancer awareness ribbons -- pink for breast cancer, emerald for liver cancer, and so on.

“Many people who take my art home with them are suffering from the form of cancer it represents, but not always,” explained Michelle. “My artwork inspired by lung cancer was difficult to conceive at first, because that awareness movement’s ribbon is clear.

For it

I chose transparent media like sheet foam and glass, and I tried to make natural light as much a part of it as anything else. The lady who purchased that piece didn’t have lung cancer, but she found the sculpture uplifting, positive, and renewing nonetheless. That is what I strive to attain my work.” “As a disease, cancer isn’t inherently worthy of special consideration,” Michelle continued. “There are many other ailments which deserve artistic interpretation. Cancer is unique to me, however, because its cause is so elemental, a disorder at the level of our biological building blocks. I’m better able to understand a thing that starts at one, specific point, in cancer’s case a cellular change.” “To me, art is about unraveling my emotions into something I can convey physically. Art is also about telling stories, as we have used it to convey ideas since long before we could do so in print. Art additionally is meant to heal, and I am blessed that my work can so directly help the people who view it.” Michelle donates a great deal of her work to charity events, and most recently contributed a purple piece to the annual Pancreatic Cancer Vigil and Walk fundraiser here in town. Her Cell-ebration artwork is also available at Fargo Stuff’s gallery at 310 NP Ave N in Fargo, online at cell-ebration.com, on Facebook at Cell-ebration, and on Instagram at cell_ebration. shopdinelive.net Red Raven Espresso Parlor stands out in Fargo for more than just its colorful name. It’s a vibrant coffee shop, the kind of place where you may expect to find artists creating something beautiful at their tables. Red Raven’s website

STAY ALIVE! (don’t text and drive)

sums their atmosphere up nicely: “an eclectic space that promotes selfexpression, creativity, and equality.” A place where everyone can act natural and be themselves -- it’s a concept as old as that of the coffee shop itself, and Red Raven carries it out very, very well. Sitting on 916 Main Ave in Fargo for over a decade now, Red Raven boasts itself as the only worker owned and operated coffee shop in the city, a truly progressive initiative. This hip coffee house offers vegetarian and vegan food

in addition to lovingly brewed coffee and espresso drinks. The décor is artsy and bohemian with crammed book shelves, comfy couches, and tables that tell the story of every mug that has ever been laid on them. Wrought iron furniture stands by in the adjacent alleyway for outdoor enjoyment, weather permitting. Red Raven’s interior is divided among two sections. The main room, with its

You can may call or email ahead of time to check availability and book a space. Red Raven hosts open mic nights for comedy or music on Tuesdays at 9:00pm. Their calendar is otherwise up in the air, although you can expect great local bands on some Saturdays, and musical and other kinds of performances on Thursdays as well. To find out what’s coming up, check out the event calendar on Red Raven’s website at redravenfargo.com. Red Raven’s drink menu, while populated by the usual coffee suspects, also

has welcome exceptions like caramel apple cider, green tea lattes, and Italian sodas. They also serve a vast selection of loose leaf teas, the perfect thing to put in your mug on a cold day. All of their drinks may be further dynamized by adding double or quadruple shots of espresso, or sweetened with shots of flavored syrup like peppermint, blackberry, or amaretto. If you’re looking for something else that’s novel, look to Red Raven’s seasonal menu for timely, tasty treats. Red Raven makes its greatest mark, however, with their vegetarian and vegan sandwich menu. Their tomato and pesto grilled cheese with provolone beats all, though the artichoke and hummus sandwich follows as a close second. Their “sloppy duck,” a barbeque mock duck sandwich toasted with provolone, is also excellent. (Like the artichoke and hummus, the sloppy duck is also vegan, but only if you can do without cheese.) All of Red Raven’s sandwiches’ bread is made with Breadsmith’s fresh peasant bread, and they have vegan bagels thanks to our local bagelry Boppa’s Bagels. If you’re looking for something different, you’ll find it at Red Raven Espresso Parlor -- and for my money, different is the only thing worth looking for.

CommeRCiaL Archer Real Estate Services offers sales and leasing brokerage, development and investment services, partnership ventures, and project consulting. Our group of commercial agents have a proven track record in this area.
