Maple River Golf Club MUCH MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE by Jamee Larson The Maple River Golf Club opened in 1965. The 18-hole, par 72 course offers a combination of tree-lined fairways, bunkers, and water hazards. It is 6,828 yards from the longest tee. The course is impressive, but that’s not what makes the club so inimitable.

“Maple River is uniquely positioned as a semi-private course,” explained General Manager and Head Golf Professional Dave Schultz. “We have about 300 paying members, but we are also open to the public.” Although Schultz has only been in the position a few months, he has already begun stamping his own imprint on the club. “We are going through a culture shift right now,” he said. “We are really trying to cater to our members.” That special attention includes the creation of Ladies Night on Wednesdays, Men’s Day on Thursdays, and Couples Night on Fridays. It also includes immaculate greens that are kept in stellar condition. "Larry and his staff really take care of them and they are in amazing shape" Schultz explained. “We want the entire course to be an incredibly inviting and welcoming atmosphere.”

Schultz brings a golf and hospitality management background to his position. Perhaps more importantly, he has a passion for the job and the ability to think outside the box. “We have a lot of initiatives going on right now,” he explained. “I have a lot of ideas for the course, many of which involve capital improvements that will be very noticeable.” Schultz has quickly gotten his entire staff on the same page. He has a fierce commitment to excellence and believes his staff has an obligation to treat all golfers with respect and appreciation. “We have a responsibility as a staff to make our golfer’s experience as fun and memorable as possible,” he said. “We have staff who want to be here; this is not just a paycheck for any of us.”

There are certain items that you can scrimp on and others that will end up costing you more in the long run if you cut corners now. One of the largest school expenses involves electronics. When it comes to laptops, tablets, desktop computers, or even graphing calculators, avoid used or refurbished items. Although the initial sticker prices are appealing, you are more likely to wind up with inferior products that cause headache after headache. Keep in mind, however, that purchasing quality merchandise does not mean you have to pay for every bell and whistle available. Talk to your children’s teachers to determine exactly which features are necessary and which can be avoided. Failing to discern between which add-ons are required and which can be ignored can cause a reasonably priced item to become a budget breaker. As far as general supplies, there are several ways you can save a substantial amount of money. The first involves buying in bulk. When you are dealing with items that your child will be needing all year (like pens, pencils, and paper), buying in bulk will save you money in the long run. You can also shop with friends or family members that are willing to split bulk items in order to save money for both of you. The other way to save a substantial amount of money is to avoid your child’s pleas to purchase specialty items, especially those with pop culture associations. For example, the cost of five Star Wars folders is the same as twenty regular folders of the same quality. 2016 will be their second summer at West Acres. The produce you will find at this farmers market is as fresh as it gets. According to member Austin Wittmier from Bill Erbes Farms, the market was originally known as the Great Plains Produce Association and that group made a rule that mandates all products need to originate within sixty miles of Fargo/Moorhead so that consumers know exactly what they are getting. “Customers want to be educated about what they are eating and where it is from,” Wittmier said. “More questions are being asked.” The move to West Acres has been positive for the farmers market. “We have much more visibility than we did down at the dike,” Wittmier explained. That increased visibility will lead to more customers discovering the advantages of farmers markets. “If you have never experienced fresh, locally grown produce, stop and ask questions to the growers,” he encouraged. “Experience the fresh locally grown food; you

You can watch everything from the potato sack fashion show and Miss Tater Tot pageant to picking and peeling contests and potato car races. “It’s always fun to watch the participants in their costumes and on Saturday it’s usually standing room only for the events on the Main Stage,” Olson explained. To celebrate the event’s 25th anniversary, Potato Days will include some events from the earliest festivals, including a Mr. Potato Head and a Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head competition. Rumor has it that this year’s event is also going to include a corn hole competition with a little potato flare. It sounds like something you need to see to truly understand.

Although some events cost money to participate in, the vast majority of both events and attractions are free. One of Fargo’s newest restaurants, Sazerac Alley has already made a name for itself. Inspired by the flavors of New Orleans and the Southeast, Sazerac offers a variety of unique dishes that aren’t found anywhere in the region. Although there are some Cajun dishes on the menu, the restaurant is far from a one trick pony. Managing Partner Dan Hurder is not a newcomer to the Fargo’s restaurant scene. In addition to Sazerac Alley, Hurder is a partner in The Ottertail Supper Club and Lodge, The Boiler Room, Barbacoa, and Chef’s Table Catering. He was also a partner in the popular Monte’s Downtown, which recently closed its doors and is now the home of Sazerac Alley. How did a New Orleans inspired restaurant wind up in Fargo? “When we set out to remodel and rebrand the space that was formerly Monte’s Downtown, we knew we wanted to do something that was different and unique to the

We encourage everyone to come in and discover their new favorite.” Although there are restaurants in the area that feature southern cuisine, Hurder believes that Sazerac’s is truly unique. “We have tried to stay as true to the authentic Louisiana style as we could get,” he said. “We have also tried to elevate the wine program, cocktail program, and level of service that we offer to exceed what others in the region are trying to do.” The most successful restaurants are those that set themselves apart and creates an individual persona. When asked what Sazerac’s identity will be, Hurder didn’t hesitate. “Cajun culture uses a word lagniappe which translates to “a little something extra” in English,” he said. “We are always striving to achieve lagniappe.”
When asked what he would say to potential customers, he answered, “I would say that they should set aside any pre-conceived notions they might have about what Cajun food is, and come check us out. There is a lot more to our menu than spicy dishes and seafood. And our staff is more than happy to accommodate any diners taste preferences or dietary restrictions as best as they are able to do so.” Sazerac Alley has big shoes to fill in relation to its current location. From its rustic interior to the outdoor patio in the back, NoBull has set itself apart within the industry. Add to that a garage door in the front of the restaurant that allows customers to get the feeling of being outside, regardless of where they sit, and you have a dining experience that is without equal. As NoBull continues to grow, they will be offering more events and special. According to Fisher, rib-a-palooza will be starting soon. Sound intriguing? It is. The special will give diners two ribs for the price of one every Twosday from 5:00 to 10:00 pm. The new theme will join the current Swine and Wine special that take place on Wednesdays when diners who buy one bottle or glass of wine can get a second for only a penny. During the first weekend of August, Fargo’s Rheault Farm will be transformed into a cornucopia of all things fiber. No, I am not talking about fiber as in an essential part of a healthy diet. Instead, this fiber focuses on art materials consisting of natural or synthetic fiber and other components such as fabric or yarn. The Fiber Arts Festival takes place on August 5th and 6th. According to Fargo Park District Program Coordinator Rachel Wolpert, the festival began as a way to teach the community about fiber and the different ways it can be used. “The Fiber Arts Festival is a relaxed, informal weekend that everyone in the family can enjoy and learn all things fiber,” she said. “If you’ve ever wanted to learn about how clothing, blankets, stuffed animals, and more are made, then this is the perfect event,” she said. The two-day event features a variety of demonstrations and hands-on activities involved with yarn, spinning wheels, needles, looms, and more. Attendees can learn where fiber comes from, how it is cleaned, and how it is made into fabric. In addition, vendors will be on hand selling everything from yarn, fiber, and dye to food, tools, and books. Completed art and craft projects will also be available for sale. The Fiber Arts Festival has always enjoyed a loyal following, but organizers have diligently found ways to attract new crowds. Past festivals have included live sheep shearing, a “Taste of Lamb” competition for local chefs, and even on-site alpacas. Local shops have also been invited to showcase their wares. Each year, new classes, vendors, and demonstrators are added to the festival line-up. According to Wolpert, the most popular events are always the animal events and hands-on activities. The live demonstrations and learning events are also always well attended. This year, participants can learn knitting, crochet, spinning, weaving, rug hooking, basketry, stitching, quilting, rug making, and paper crafts. There will also be two classes taught by accomplished artists. Guest artist Joanna Johnson will teach a class on how to buff knit and expert needle sculptor Teresa Perleberg will teach 3D needle felting. There will also be a class on how to upcycle old t-shirts.

Summer in the Red River Valley has many defining events: The Red River Valley Fair, the Downtown Street Fair, River Arts, and the Fargo Blues Fest among the most popular. Also on this list is the Island Park Show, held annually during the last weekend of August. The show is one of the area’s premier events, bringing in between eight and ten thousand people each year. On August 2 at 5:00 pm, the city will sponsor the event at West Fargo’s Elmwood Park. Everyone is invited and encourage to attend. According to Assistant Police Chief Jerry Bower, the event is important for a variety of reasons. “Each year, this event provides the opportunity for people to ask questions, see the various

On June 12, a gunman entered Pulse, a popular gay club in Orlando, and opened fire. The terrorist was killed by police, but not before claiming the lives of 49 people and injuring over 50 more. Not only was the massacre the deadliest mass shooting in US history, it was also a direct attack on an LGBT community that already finds itself in the crosshairs on a regular basis. I know, I know. Nothing like that could ever happen here, right? There are far more of those people in Orlando, so it isn’t an issue here. Right? Wrong and wrong. Although the population of Orlando is over twice that of Fargo, the actual percentages of those identifying as LGBT are likely very similar in each city. Many will say that the manner in which LGBT people are treated has improved a great deal in the past few years. Although it is true that same-sex marriage is now legal and more and more states are passing bills aimed at protecting the rights of LGBT, society has a long way to go. As a result, it is important that events like FM Pride Week be supported by all segments of society, regardless of sexual orientation. FM Pride has been a part of the Fargo-Moorhead community for 16 years. According to Planning Chair Josh Boschee, the event began with a group of local LGBT folks and allies walking down Broadway for a Pride Parade. “The Parade is an important part of any Pride celebration as it is reminiscent of the Stonewall Riots 27 years ago in New York City and the LGBT community marching down Christopher Street to demand the police stop harassing and arresting gay and transgender people,” Boschee explained.

One of the most popular events is Saturday’s Pride in the Park. Held at Island Park, the event is a mixture of vendors, informational booths, entertainment, and food. It is an extraordinary event that is perfect for those who may be new to the festival and want to get their proverbial feet wet. For those who have never attended, Boschee would like to give you a special invitation. “Pride isn’t just for LGBT people,” he said. “It’s for the entire community and we are proud to see more and more people, employers, place of worship, and community organizations partner with us each year.” The battle for equality has seen several victories in recent years. Pride festivals and parades are certainly not a new idea. They happen every year all over the world. What is new, however, is the visibility that the LGBT community has been receiving. The issue can no longer be pushed under the rug or put back inside the proverbial closet. The community is demanding to be a part of mainstream society. To an extent they are, but to a bigger extent, they aren’t. So what exactly is Pride Week? According to Boschee, it is a combination of things. “Pride in most communities is an opportunity for LGBT people to gather in a safe place; more recently they have been opportunities to celebrate policy progress made at the local, state, and nation level for our community,” he said. “Especially in a rural state like North Dakota, Pride may be the one time a year that some LGBT North Dakotans get to be amongst other North Dakotans that have similar life experiences.” 2016’s Pride Week takes place from August 18th to the 21st. The week kicks off on the 14th with a volunteer meeting followed by the raising of the symbolic rainbow f lags on Broadway. Starting on the 18th, events include everything from bowling and karaoke to a youth drag
The battle isn’t over, however. “As more and more LGBT people feel comfortable coming out to their family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors, we have seen the quality of life improve for some of us,” Boschee explained. “However, there is still many challenges LGBT North Dakotans face. Employment and housing discrimination are a reality for several North Dakotans each year and we continue to see the youth homeless rate increase for LGBT youth.” As Irish philosopher, Edmund Burke once said, “all that is needed for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Pride week is a time to celebrate the LGBT community, foster life-affirming relationships, and continue the fight for equality. It is not a battle that the LGBT community can fight alone. When asked to identify the ultimate goal of Pride Week, Boschee offered this summation: “To honor our past. To celebrate one another. To build community. To educate the greater community.” In other words, don’t be the one doing nothing. Be a part of the fight and ensure that evil never wins. Trivia time: How far is it from Fargo to the nearest Celebrity Walk of Fame? It is 1,800 miles to the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame, but that certainly isn’t the nearest. Las Vegas maybe? New York? How about Chicago? No, no, and no. The nearest Celebrity Walk of Fame is located … in Fargo.
Haven’t heard of Fargo’s Celebrity Walk of Fame? You are not alone. Many times, visitors who actively search out a city’s attractions know more about them than do the residents. We often take for granted that which is right outside our doorways. Located at the Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center, the Celebrity Walk of Fame is a collection of over 110 celebrity signatures, handprints, and footprints preserved in cement. The inception of the attraction dates back to the early 1980s when Mike Stevens founded the original “Fargo Walk of Fame” in downtown Fargo. According to Travel Ambassador Lead Danni Riley, the first star to be inducted was trumpeter Al Hirt. “The walk was great until there was no more room on the sidewalk,” she explained. Eventually, the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors Bureau was chosen as the new home and the Walk of Fame was relocated in May of 2000. The Hollywood Walk of Fame includes over 2,500 stars. Although Fargo’s doesn’t come anywhere close to that number, the list of celebrities that have left a lasting impact on the city is equal as impressive. Among the most popular are Bill Gates, Styx, Def Leppard, Garth Brooks, Kiss, the Monkees, and Alice Cooper. Fargo-Moorhead really loves its music. One of the neatest ways to experience the Walk of Fame is to size up your hands and feet to those of the stars. The largest footprints come in at just over 17 inches. The owner? None other than Sesame Street’s Ernie. Burt’s print is a bit smaller. The celebrity presence that surprised me the most was famous sex therapist and media personality Dr. Ruth. The good doctor is only 4’7”, so you can imagine the diminutive size of the prints she left. Although I am an ardent Styx fan, they are not my favorite step on the Walk of Fame. That honor goes to famed basketball player Meadowlark Lemon, famed member of the original Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. I could hear “Sweet Georgia Brown” playing in the background as I paid my respects to the “Clown Prince.” Never been to Fargo’s Celebrity Walk of Fame? Danni Riley would like to change that. “I would say that the Fargo Celebrity Walk of Fame is a different and unique part of Fargo’s history that you cannot find anywhere else,” she said. “It is so interesting to see the huge names that not only came to Fargo but also took the time to put their hand prints in the cement for visitors to see. It is definitely worth the stop.” The Celebrity Walk of Fame is located at 2001 44th Street South, just off exit 348 on Interstate-94. More information can be obtained at www.fargomoorhead.org.

~ Bruce Springsteen A community can be defined in many ways, one of which is music. Music is a powerful communicator that can bring people together like few other mediums. It is ethereal, timeless, and most of all, universal. The music scene in the Red River Valley has always had a strong and inf luential presence. It is in that vein that the Fargo Rocks! Concert series began. “It was created to showcase local rock bands in the Fargo/Moorhead area,” explained Fargo Park District Program Coordinator Rachel Wolpert. Originally held at Dike West, the series was moved to Island Park due to the construction of the
If you missed the June and July concerts, there is still time. “It is a family-friendly event that is a great opportunity to come out and enjoy some music by local rock musicians,” Wolpert said. “You can bring a picnic or a lawn chair and have fun with the entire family. Why wouldn’t you want to enjoy a concert outside in the park?” In addition to inviting everyone to the August 18th show, Wolpert would also like to encourage local musicians to consider playing at the concert series. “We are always looking for new talent,” she said. “I welcome recommendations from the public about musicians and bands that we can consider for the concerts.”

Music lovers that have attended the series in previous years will notice a difference in 2016. “In the past, we have had two bands perform each night; we would have one band as the opener and another as the headliner,” Wolpert explained. “This year, we decided to focus on one band for each night and let them perform for about 90 minutes.” The result is an opportunity to really get to know area talent on a more personal level. So far, the change has been positive. According to Wolpert, the concert series has been well attended and received. “People enjoy coming out to Island park and seeing how talented their community is,” she said. “It’s fun for people of all ages and a great opportunity to bring friends

Del Val has always been a fervent supporter of arts in the community. “They (the arts) are important because they have the potential to unite us in beautiful ways,” she said. “Arts cross the boundaries and engage people in new ways.” It is the inclusive nature of an event like ChalkFest that makes it so appealing. Creativity and artistic expression are human elements which can be embraced by anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, etc. “It (chalk) is a universal art form,” Del Val explained.
