Treat Others the Way They Want to be Treated by Jamee Larson

Do your best. Do what’s right. Almost twenty-five years ago, retired U.S. Airforce commander Gordon Logan wanted to transform the men’s hair care industry, and transform it he did. Logan opened Sport Clips in Austin, Texas in 1993 with the goal of providing a “championship haircut experience in an exciting sports-themed environment.” That unique and innovative concept has helped Sport Clips grow from that initial store to a countrywide network of more than 1,500 locations. In fact, Sport Clips is currently the only national hair care franchise to have a store in all fifty states. Paul and Tara Herzog are the latest entrepreneurs to become part of the Sport Clips family. After seeing a flier for the franchise, Tara was hooked. “I knew it was a unique concept for the area,” she said. A licensed cosmetologist, Tara convinced Paul to take the leap and the pair opened their first store in Grand Forks in 2011. The business

venture has been a resounding success. The Herzog’s have now brought Sport Clips to the Fargo/Moorhead area, with stores located in West Fargo (opened in August 2012) and Fargo’s Timber Creek (opened in January of 2016). The success of the stores has been remarkable and according to Paul, “there are definite plans for more locations.” The thing that sets Sport Clips apart is its commitment to excellence. When Logan created the business concept, he did so with a model rooted in steadfast values. These core values are the same as those adopted by the legendary football coach Lou Holtz: “Do your best. Do what’s right. Treat others the way they want to be treated.” By developing an experience that is unparalleled in the hair care industry, Logan created a franchise that puts clients first, every time. The signature service for all Sport Clips stores is the “MVP Experience,” which includes a precision haircut, hot steamed towel, massaging shampoo (including tea tree shampoo and leave-in conditioner), and relaxing neck and shoulder treatment. “We don’t want you to just come in and get a haircut,” Tara explained. “It [the MVP Experience] really sets us apart.” The entire Sport Clips concept is based on a sports theme, including the presence of several television screens so clients don’t miss the big game. It is all part of creating an atmosphere that appeals

Sport Clips’ philanthropic endeavors end, however. In addition to the local heroes’ program, Sport Clips locations across the US have partnered with a plethora of companies, including Habitat for Humanity, the Boys & Girls Club, the American Red Cross, and Special Olympics. Finally, Sport Clips has also made a commitment to assisting future cosmetologists in obtaining the education and training they need. Through the ACE (Access to Cosmetology Education) Scholarship Program, up to 15 cosmetology students who are enrolled in an AACS member school can apply for a $1000 scholarship every year. Tara has had the pleasure of presenting a scholarship to a local student at The Salon

In addition to their stellar products and services, another thing that has made Sport Clips so successful is their commitment to giving back to the communities that support them. One way they do that is the “Help a Hero” program, which raises funds to provide scholarships to veterans and service members. The VFW’s “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” program helps veterans get the education and training they need to transition from the battlefield to civilian careers.

Professional Academy in 2015. Although Sport Clips is a franchise, clients in the F/M area can be assured of an individualized experience. The locations in the area are independently owned by the Herzogs, who take a hands-on approach to the businesses. “It’s a franchise business, but we are local owners in the stores every week,” Tara said. Grow in Gratitude

by Anita Dualeh

In the U.S., November has long been associated with giving thanks. The first recorded harvest celebration took place in Plymouth Colony in November 1621, though harvest celebrations in America most likely predated the arrival of colonists. More than 200 years later, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared the nation would celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on November 26th and that the fourth Thursday in every November thereafter would be an official day of thanksgiving. This was the start of our nation’s official holiday to celebrate and give thanks for the blessings of the past year. Though it is good to pause once a year and reflect on all the reasons we have to be grateful, thankfulness is something we can and should cultivate throughout the entire year.

Benefits of Gratitude Research has shown that those who are thankful tend to experience less stress and greater happiness. They often have closer friends, happier marriages, healthier hearts and all around improved lives. Gratitude is also associated with increased energy, alertness and enthusiasm as well as a boost to the immune system and increased blood supply to the heart. In general, thankful people have better physical and emotional health than those who neglect the practice of gratitude. Besides, grateful people are more pleasant to be around.

shopdinelive.net

Ways to Grow in Gratitude Even if gratitude doesn’t come naturally for you, there are a number of steps you can take to grow in thankfulness. Keep a gratitude journal. Each day write down one or more things for which you are grateful. Watch your list grow over time and reread it

whenever you need a reminder of how good you’ve really got it. Feel free to share your list with someone else who may be encouraged by it.

Verbally share your appreciation of someone or something. Don’t let a day go by without giving a compliment or verbalizing your appreciation in some way. Each positive statement you add to your repertoire makes you that much more of a positive person. Thank a police officer or another public servant for all she or he does to serve your community.

Bake a homemade treat and give it, along with a thank you note, to a neighbor. Be sure to write specifically and

Winter Safety Tips

by Jamee Larson

Some people look forward to the first snowfall in much the same way as a child on Christmas morning. There is something about the first glimmers of white that is intoxicating. Not everyone agrees, of course, but if winter is your season, your time is here. As beautiful as winter can be, however, it is also dangerous, especially for those of us living in the Midwest. Understanding the realities of winter can help prevent injury, illness, and even death. The National Safety Council suggests the following tips for keeping you and your family safe during the winter months.

Vehicles

We spend a great deal of time in our vehicles, especially those that travel during the holidays. Winterizing your vehicle before traveling even small distances can keep you and your family safe. Always check the weather before departure. Know the forecast for your area and plan accordingly. Trying to “beat” the weather can result in finding yourself in dangerous situations that are often undrivable. If bad weather is looming, consider leaving early or even postponing your plans. Enlist the help of a mechanic. Allowing a trained professional to give your car the once-over can prevent mechanical failure. Have your antifreeze level and freeze line, tires, brakes, belts, and battery checked before the temperature drops and the snow starts piling up. Understand the conditions. Experts recommend avoiding your cruise control during the winter, accelerating and decelerating slowly, giving yourself extra time to stop (especially in icy conditions), steering into the direction you want

Snow Shoveling

Snow removal is a necessary evil during winter. That doesn’t mean, however, that you need to put your health in jeopardy. If you are unable to remove snow on your own, hire someone to help you. If you do plan on taking care of the snow shoveling/ blowing duties, keep the following tips in mind. Avoid straining and listen to your body. Hundreds of people die from heart attacks during the winter, many of them due to snow shoveling. Listen to your body and stop if you are feeling exhausted or in pain of any sort. Push rather than lift. The worst thing you can do for your back is to lift and throw heavy shovels of snow. Push the snow as much as you can. If you must lift, do so with your legs and not your back. Know your limits. Do not work to the point of exhaustion. If you must break the snow shoveling into manageable sections, do so. Understand your body and know when it is time to stop or rest.

Protecting your body

Low temperatures can take a toll on your body very quickly. Protecting your skin is essential, especially in frigid temperatures. Bundle up in layers of loose clothing. Dressing in multiple layers will protect your body’s temperature while giving you the opportunity to remove layers when inside. Keep your ears covered. Stocking hats may do little for your hair style, but it will do wonders for your core temperature. If you refuse to wear a hat, consider earmuffs or other ways of keeping your ears warm.

[701] 4924502 FARGO.HOME2SUITES.COM

What’s more fun than raising money for a good cause? Doing it while dressed as Frosty the Snowman, an elf, or sporting your favorite ugly Christmas sweater. Runners will have their chance to do both during the Jingle Bell Run, held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 in front of Courts Plus in Fargo. Runners of this 5K or 1 mile race are encouraged to dress up in their favorite holiday-themed outfit as they raise awareness and money to find a cure for Arthritis, America’s #1 cause of disability. For those who choose not to brave the cold, an indoor track will be available for runners and walkers alike. “It’s a wonderful, festive event that kicks off holiday spirit and spreads awareness of the Arthritis Foundation,” said Brittany Ingersoll, Arthritis Foundation Development Manager of North Dakota. In addition to the run, a Jingle Ball Bash will be held on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Sanctuary Events Center in Fargo. Attendees can enjoy a delicious dinner, bid on a number of items at the silent auction, enjoy live music and wine tasting, try ballroom dancing and sign up for door prizes. All proceeds will benefit the Jingle Bell Run. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., followed by the event at 7 p.m. Single tickets are $30; couples are $50. According to the Arthritis Foundation, the disease affects more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children in the Unites States. While Arthritis is a common disease, it is not well understood. Jingle Bell Runs are held in communities all over the country, and Ingersoll hopes to not only spread the word and raise

Enjoy the Lights in Lindenwood Grab your family and friends and drive to Lindenwood Park in Fargo to witness this year’s Holiday Light display. Enjoy the warmth and comfort of your car while you sip hot chocolate and listen to Christmas carols. There were over 65 displays last year, thanks to generous area businesses and organizations. Now in its 18th year, the Holiday Lights at Lindenwood, sponsored by the FM Sertoma Club, continues to get bigger and better. According to Jim Wolslegel, Sertoma President, there are more displays this year, and many have been updated, with over 7,000 new LED light bulbs installed. Also new this year, the proceeds from the first three Mondays will be donated to Honor Flight, an organization dedicated to transporting as many U.S. military veterans as possible to Washington D.C. (at no cost to the veterans) to see the memorials of the respective war(s) they fought in. Continue on the next page >

The local pub crawl benefits the Gladys Ray Shelter and Veteran’s Drop-In Center as attendees get jolly at participating bars. The SantaCon Crawl will begin at Rooter’s Bar at 1 p.m. as (21 and over) “crawlers” dressed as Santa, Mrs. Claus, reindeer, elves and other holiday characters stroll through downtown bars, enjoying holiday spirits, merriment, and donating items and money along the way. The most-needed items include toiletries, cans of ground coffee, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, and warm gloves and hats for their residents. “It is for a good cause,” said Brittney Goodman, Marketing Coordinator for the event.

“It's about breaking the cycle of homelessness.” According to Jan Eliassen, Director of the Gladys Ray Shelter, goers of the SantaCon Crawl are definitely doing their part to help. “All money raised goes into a fund that provides opportunities for shelter guests to receive assistance to meet a specific need or continue working toward their goals,” she said. “Often people that are homeless do not have the resources to overcome immediate barriers to housing, employment, training, family reunification, or even meeting basic health needs. shopdinelive.net Examples of past scholarships include support for obtaining a copy of a birth certificate or identification needed to apply for jobs or housing, purchasing required apparel for a new job (boots, gloves, uniform, etc.), filling prescriptions, rental housing applications, transportation to return home, eye appointments and/or new glasses, household items when moving into housing, and medical or dental co-pays. “Requests for support can be related to anything that will break down barriers or improve an individual's immediate situation,” Eliassen added. Participants can purchase tickets from volunteers along the way for a chance to win a large screen plasma TV, artwork, and many other items. Winners will be drawn at the Pickled Parrot at 7:45 p.m. “It's all about dressing up as a holiday character, having fun, raising some money, donating items, and getting into the holiday spirit, Goodman added. She also promotes good, safe decisions along the way. Cab company numbers are included on the route map given to participants to encourage safe rides home. There is absolutely no underage drinking, and she hopes participants will tip their servers well. “Don't be a bad Santa. Be a jolly, charitable, fun Santa,” she said. The first SantaCon began in San Francisco in 1994. Since then, it has expanded to 364 cities in 51 countries. The Fargo event started as a small gathering of friends seven years ago, but has blossomed into a beloved holiday event, with over 200 participants last year. The first year the event raised funds for the Boys and Girls Club. The second year, it benefited the Food Bank of Fargo. This is the fifth year raising funds and donated needed items for the Gladys Ray Shelter and Veterans Drop-In Center. “We all believe in the cause and we also find that the Gladys Ray volunteers and employees are a big help in making the event happen,” said Goodman. “It's a perfect partnership.”

By John & Wayne - All You Could Want and More by Rachelle Gordon

If you’re craving a succulent steak or melt-in-your-mouth rack of ribs, look no further than Fargo’s own Meats by John and Wayne. This expansive butcher shop has literally anything you could imagine - and then some. Whether grilling for two or two hundred, Meats by John and Wayne can deliver the goods. Read on to find out more about why this local favorite was voted “Best Butcher Shop” of the Red River Valley. You’ll be firing up the smoker in no time!

Meats by John and Wayne offers every type of protein imaginable, from steaks to whole turkeys, as well as some unique items that may be new to the taste buds.

History John Mangin and Wayne Rheault opened their namesake butcher shop in 2004 after both working in the meat industry since the 1970s. Both born and raised in the area, the pair shares a fondness for quality cuts that are fresh and offer an unmatched expertise in meats of all types and flavors. “After years of the same old same old, corporate style stuff, they wanted to start something that could bring high-quality meat at a decent price,” explains Jason Aamodt, one of the current owners of Meats by John and Wayne. Jason came on 9 years ago as a part-time employee, purchasing the shop last October with Wayne’s son, Ben, and Sam Resha, another former part-time worker. “My favorite part of working here is the interaction with people,” says Aamodt. “You always have to eat! Somebody actually needs food, and you’re getting them something with a higher quality than they’re used to getting at a very affordable price. It’s cool to see how happy people get!” Aamodt stated that he had never experienced real deli meat as a child, typically eating traditional hot dogs.

“I grew up on round steaks - just the worst cuts. That was what was readily available. Now my kid is spoiled! He doesn’t even realize what he gets to eat every day compared to what I had. I was raised on Oscar Meyer bologna!”

All of the Favorites and More Meats by John and Wayne offers every type of protein imaginable, from steaks to whole turkeys, as well as some unique items that may be new to the taste buds. The menu is a dizzying list of sausages, walleye, chorizo, rib eyes and everything in between. Meats by John and Wayne also features fresh bratwurst in an array of flavors. In addition to classics like beer or sauerkraut, there are also exciting creations like strawberry jalapeno and pizza. Current seasonal specials include peanut butter & jelly, pumpkin, and a special “Thanksgiving” brat - try them all! “I’m a steak guy,” explains Aamodt. “We’re known for so many things, with having the aged steaks, so many varieties of brats, and just the weird, seasonal specials, but I’m a steak guy for the simple fact that

Final Thought Meats by John and Wayne is a place where people know they can get quality cuts of beef, pork, poultry and more at a great price. Jason Aamodt wants customers new and old to know that everything starts and ends with them. “We’re really about our customers. Without them, we wouldn’t be here. Continue Their Holiday Music Tradition by Kristin Johnson The Blenders, Fargo’s favorite foursome, are back this year delivering smooth vocal harmonies and holiday favorites during their annual Holiday Concert Tour. The four men, Ryan Lance, Tim Kasper, Darren Rust and Allan Rust, grew up in Fargo-Moorhead. All super-talented in the local music scene, they formed The Blenders over 25 years ago. After years of touring the country, appearing with acts such as Jay Leno, Howie Mandel and others, members of the group have now gone different directions in life. This hasn’t stopped their love of performing together though. With the success of their first Christmas album “Nog” in 1997, the Blenders realized their holiday music really struck a chord with their fan base. Since then, they’ve reconnected every Christmas season for The Blenders Holiday Concert Tour.

I have wonderful memories of Christmas, and when people’s memories are brought back, it’s emotional The Blenders Holiday Concert Tour kicks off in Minneapolis December 9-11, before going to Des Moines for one show on December 12. Then the Blenders make their annual trek back home, performing seven shows December 14-18 at the historic Fargo Theatre. “It truly is a homecoming for us,” said The Blenders’ Darren Rust. “It’s become a tradition for us and our fans.” Tickets are available exclusively through www.tickets300.com. Having performed together for so long, things just seem to fall into place for The Blenders. In preparation for the holiday tour, each member practices his own part during the year, and in mid-November, they get together for what Rust likes to call “vocal boot camp.” They brush off the dust, retrain their vocal chords, and get busy with rehearsals. “We have to really know what we’re doing before we get together,” Rust said. “Everybody’s got their own jobs and families now, so when we come together, it’s really about repetition - singing together a bunch and getting our groove back.”
