forward to spring, try getting out of your comfort zone by trying a few new activities around town. February does tend to be one of the colder months, but that shouldn’t stop you from having a few adventures both indoors and out!
shopdinelive.net Downtown Ice Rink: It’s no secret that Fargo is well-known for its ice rinks. However, as with the majority of the city’s rinks, the very popular and family friendly downtown spot only typically stays open as long as the weather permits. Be sure to grab a friend and a hot drink, and enjoy a few relaxing laps while watching the downtown hustle and bustle while there’s still time. If you haven’t seen the rink already on your commute, it’s located right off Broadway and Main Ave. Open until 9:00pm, the rink runs both weekdays and weekends. Skaters can also enjoy a fire pit to stay warm.

Fargo Park District Events: Check out the Fargo Park District’s website and calendar at FargopPaks.com/ events-calendar for a variety of fun and family friendly events scheduled throughout the month of February. Baked goods always taste best when they are made locally. If you’re searching for a scrumptious treat, be sure to check out some of the area bakeries listed below. The best part is that many of these delicious treats are also available as gluten free or vegan. These local goods are sure to be a hit!
Lucid Bakery:
Lucid is Fargo’s only fully vegan bakery.
You can find Lucid’s baked goods at the Green House Café on Broadway, Youngblood Coffee Co., or at the Red River Market in the summer. What makes Lucid so special is its commitment to using local ingredients as often as possible. Lucid also uses no preservatives and bakes from scratch so that each tasty treat is always fresh and full of flavor. Lucid Bakery can bake custom made orders or check out some of its tried and true varieties of cookies such as Double Chocolate Brownie and Frosted Shortbread. While sampling, should also probably give the Vanilla and French Lavender cupcakes a try. There is also Almond Bliss and Loaded Carrot, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a Beer and Peanut Butter Pretzel cupcake. Cupcake flavors are also offered by the slice or by two and three-layer full cake versions, and the bakery also offers bars, muffins, and quick breads. Find Lucid at Green House Café at 68 Broadway North, Fargo or at Youngblood Coffee Co. at 623 Northern Pacific Ave., Fargo.

Saving Money on
Your Wedding
- How Not to Break the Bank on Your Big Day by Rachelle Gordon Getting married is one of the happiest and most exciting events in your life. It may also be one of the most expensive. According to the bridal website The Knot, the average price of a wedding in the United States is just over $31,000. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to help trim the budget for your wedding. From DIY-ing your favors to consigning your dress, opportunities to save are all around you. Read on for some tips on keeping costs for your nuptials low - besides, you still have that dream honeymoon to plan!
“Years from now, you’ll look back on what a great time everyone had, with or without the waiters with the white gloves!”
Be Flexible
One of the main ways that couples save money on their wedding is by holding it on a day other than Saturday and/or during an off-peak season. Venues, caterers, and DJs want full schedule books, and may even offer a significant discount if you hold your event on a Friday or Sunday. And remember that planning a wedding is a lot like buying a car - it’s okay to haggle for a better price!
Buy Used and Save the Difference

DIY - But Don’t Spread Yourself Too Thin
Getting crafty is a wonderful way to save big bucks on your wedding, but remember that it takes a lot of work. For every Pinterest-perfect wedding, there are two where the bride was scrambling to finish the centerpieces an hour before she was due at the altar. Pick areas you’re comfortable with, whether it’s reception favors or felt boutonnieres and give yourself plenty of time to complete the projects you pick. Don’t be afraid to enlist help - inviting your bridesmaids over for wine and weaving can be a lot of fun!

shopdinelive.net Searching for the perfect venue for a wedding or other special event is a big task. It has to be just right - beautiful, unique, and everything you’ve ever dreamed of. This is where Milt’s Barn comes in. Situated 40 miles southeast of the Fargo/Moorhead, Milt’s Barn is a gorgeous country property that would be perfect for any event.
Weddings, Parties, and More... by Rachelle Gordon
“Milt’s Barn was built in 1898,” explained co-owner Mary Seifert via email. “It is named after Milton Seifert, who purchased the building site and farmland back in the 1960’s. Milt had the vision of turning the barn into a dance/community gathering place for the Pelican Rapids area. Milt’s dream did not become a reality before he passed away in 1992.” Determined to keep Milt’s dream alive, Mary and her husband Ross (Milt’s son) took over the property and in 1997 were the first couple to wed at the newly developed event center. In 2011, Milt’s Barn became available to the public for use. “This venue is seasonal, late May through early October - holding only one event each weekend,” said Seifert. She added that this ensures an intimate event with plenty of time to get every detail right.

shopdinelive.net Milt’s Barn is an expansive property with large oak trees dotting the landscape. There is a play area for children - and space for the grown-ups too! Camping is allowed on the grounds for people who want to party all night. Other available amenities include two private cabins for getting ready before the event, a fire pit, a movie screen with projector, outdoor games such as horseshoes or beanbag toss - and even a tiki bar! Tables and other equipment are also available if needed. “It’s private, rustic, personable, camping is available - you have the freedom to do what you want to do,” Seifert said. The barn can seat around 250 guests but there is additional space for seating outside as well. Milt’s provides a facility attendant who will be present for the event - the attendant will open the farm, answer any questions, handle emergency situations, and supervise set up and clean up. A gate attendant is also provided to monitor traffic and parking. Milt’s Barn is a unique and intimate space that’s perfect for any wedding or large event.

Howland became known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” and the rest is greeting card history. It is estimated that over 180 million Valentine cards will be exchanged this year alone.
No explanation of Valentine’s Day is complete without a mention of cupid. Although often a cartoon-like caricature in contemporary lore, Cupid was a very prominent figure in ancient ideologies. In Latin, the word “cupid” translates to “desire,” and Cupid was considered the god of desire, erotic love, attraction, and affection. It was believed that

Regardless, St. Valentine is considered the patron saint of engaged couples, happy marriages, and traveling. Interestingly, he is also the patron saint of beekeeping, epilepsy, plague, fainting, and traveling.
The true essence of Valentine’s Day cannot be found in a card or box of chocolates. The holiday was born out of the respect and admiration for the power of love, an emotion that predates both materialism and consumerism. It is about recognizing the value of relationships and embracing the vast potential that those relationships create. In the

Luna Fargo:
So Much More than Just Coffee by Aaron Black
With a full menu, a huge retail cheese and meat case and so much more, Luna has gone beyond coffee to make the culinary scene in Fargo stand out.
The Venue Luna, originally touted as one of Fargo’s oldest coffee shops, is located on South University Drive, in the midst of the

Luna is owned and operated by proprietor Nikki Berglund. Several years ago, Berglund partnered with local chef Ryan Nitschke in order to create full menu offerings to go along with her neighborhood wine bar concept. Inside, you’ll find a calm and inviting space featuring relaxing house music and soothing lighting. Luna’s walls are decorated with local art that is featured monthly and its servers are

Shop. Dine. Live.: How did you and Chef Ryan come to know each other and form your partnership? Nikki Berglund: It was just pure good fortune really. He was looking and I was looking. Of course I had eaten his food already quite a few times so I knew how talented he was. At the time I hadn’t yet realized the full potential of Luna and really didn’t even know exactly what direction I wanted to go. When Ryan came on board, and we all started hashing out ideas, I knew fairly quickly that we were on the same page and the rest is history. What I appreciate most about him is the fact that I can just leave him be and he is constantly surprising me and amazing me with his

shopdinelive.net SDL: Luna features a huge selection of cheeses and meats that customers can purchase from your take away cheese counter. What’s your favorite cheese? NB: I have too many favorite cheeses to mention. There are so many great ones! As a wine person, I am most drawn to the ones that complement a nice glass of wine. I went to Napa earlier in the year and tried an aged goat cheese from Cypress Grove called Midnight Moon. Chef Ryan ordered it in, and it has become a favorite of both customers and staff alike. Really though, he orders in the most interesting things that are equal parts approachable and special. This is not the cheese you buy at the grocery store, because why would it be? They do their thing, and we do ours. We also source the majority of our meats from Red Table Meats out of Minneapolis which is fun as well. Chef Ryan has taught me a ton about both cheese and charcuterie to the point where I have decided to take it a step further and become a Certified Cheesemonger- yes that is a real thing! Our cheese case can look a little overwhelming and it feels really good to help people realize that it isn’t as complicated or expensive as it looks. You can come in, ask a couple of questions, and leave with a really nice selection of cheeses for no more money than you would pay at the grocery store for a big chunk or two. Getting people comfortable with cheese is really satisfying. SDL: What do you think makes Luna unique and standout from the other casual fine dining establishments in this market? NB: Honestly I think most everything about Luna is unique to Fargo which is something we are really proud of and also something that was a main objective in the first place. The Fargo/ Moorhead restaurant scene has grown so much in the last 10 years and I love seeing the increasing diversity. It makes it easier for a concept like ours to be a success. Our restaurant scene is getting cooler all of the time and we are excited to be a part of that. Having a menu that changes daily requires a chef who is willing to constantly be creating and planning and utilizing what is available. I know a lot of people throw around the whole “farm to table” thing and even we hesitate to use it too often, but Chef Ryan has some amazing relationships with our local farmers and that is something we support as much as possible. Even in the winter there are farmers in and out of Luna constantly. I love that. SDL: Can you give us a hint about what’s in store for Luna in the future? NB: Oh man, Chef Ryan and I have so many fun ideas up our sleeves I wouldn’t know even where to start. For the time being we are just working hard at making Luna as successful as possible! We will continue to host wine and beer dinners which have been a huge success for us. My husband Paul and I live on 12 acres so we are going to dabble a little with sourcing our own produce for Luna this year, so that will be fun. As far as our future plans, you will just have to wait and see… but I promise we won’t disappoint!
