pinkitforward.org CHANGING THE LIVES OF BREAST CANCER FIGHTERS AND SURVIVORS
Do you Pink It Forward? Many of you may not know what that means, but if you’re familiar with paying it forward, it means just that for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. Pink It Forward, a 501c3 approved non-profit organization, was founded in 2012 by four family members - three of whom were both diagnosed with and beat breast cancer. RueAnn, Tammy, Deanne and Kayla have been impacted by breast cancer for as long as they can remember. Whether a mother, a sister, an aunt, or a cousin, for years it seemed as though each year someone else within the family was next in line for the dreaded “c” word. Within the last three generations, 10 women have been diagnosed, some of which have been diagnosed two, and even three times. Yes, you read that right. Breast cancer had become so second nature, that when RueAnn, President of Pink It Forward, healed from her double mastectomy in 2012, she knew she wanted to do something to help those that were still fighting. To pay it forward. To Pink It Forward.
CARE PACKAGES WITH MESSAGES OF HOPE What does “Pink it Forward” mean exactly?
In 2012, it meant
delivering white paper bags with items that RueAnn found helped minimize side effects experienced during treatments to local hospitals. Today, with the help of her sister Tammy, along with her cousin Deanne and her daughter Kayla, Pink It Forward has grown from those little paper bags to a family driven organization that has delivered more than 550 quality care packages to individuals diagnosed with breast cancer in more than 20 states. They’re able to continue their mission to provide hope and empowerment by enriching the lives of those affected by cancer because of support from local communities and businesses, annual fundraising events, and generous donations made from people all over the country.

S P OT L I G HT HOW YOU CAN PINK IT FORWARD Knowing that more than 300,000 individuals are diagnosed each year with a form of breast cancer fuels the organization’s drive to keep reaching further, to spread the message that you too can make a difference. Sending a care package to someone in need is incredibly impactful not only to the organization and the individual requesting it, but more so to the individual that opens the box to see pink tissue paper wrapping a care package with items to help brighten their day in an otherwise dark time. That’s where you come in. Have you been impacted by breast cancer? If not, chances are you know someone who has, and you can help make a difference. Throughout the year Pink It Forward puts on annual fundraising events in both Fargo and Bismarck. This past September the group hosted the 1st Annual Tossing for Tatas Bean Bag Tournament, an event that helped raise more than $5,000. Coming up on January 29th, 2017 at the Scheel’s Arena, they will host their 4th Annual Wine and Tie, an event to replenish their inventory of handmade fleece tie blankets included in many of the care packages. Your attendance at events like this, along with donations from individuals and businesses both local and nationwide are what allow Pink It Forward to continue paying it forward – to

And that is truly what they want you to know – that breast cancer impacts everyone. A mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, even a father or brother. Natural Pet Center -Where a Healthy Pet is a Happy Pet by Kristin Johnson When it comes to keeping your dogs and cats healthy, Natural Pet Center is the prime place to go in the FargoMoorhead area. Open since 2005, Natural Pet Center is dedicated to providing its customers and their furry friends with the best food, treats, toys and services around.
One of the keys to keeping a healthy pet is ensuring it eats food made of natural ingredients. With over 20 brands to choose from, Natural Pet Center is certain to have one your pet will enjoy. They all include premium meats, grains and vegetables, without the added sugars and colors found in many brands. They also stock grain free, freeze dried and raw foods for cats and dogs.

shopdinelive.net “Natural is in our name, and that’s what we specialize in,” said Michelle Smith, owner of Natural Pet Center. “We try to look for products that will be beneficial to the health and long lives of pets,” she added. In addition to daily food, Natural Pet Center focuses on carrying healthy treats and supplements. For dogs, they carry a large selection of bones, biscuits and other treats including raw bones, bully sticks, antlers and smoked bones. Many treats also have health benefits, which is an added bonus for your pet. It’s important for cats to have treats too, especially ones that are made from real meat. Many of the

treats found at Natural Pet Center also strengthen hips and joints, help with digestion issues, dry skin, and anxiety concerns and reduce hairballs in cats. During the summer months, it’s easy to get pets outdoors for regular exercise. When it’s cold out though, pet owners must get creative in thinking of ways to keep their dogs and cats active. Smith suggests keeping dogs entertained with a variety of toys, puzzles and games. The idea is to keep them occupied and free from getting bored. “A tired pet is a happy pet,” Smith said. “Fun puzzle toys not only keep them

active, but mentally stimulated too. Once they get bored, they tend to get mischievous.” Winter can also be a good time to focus on training dogs. An obedience class, or one that focuses on agility or other skills is also a positive thing for dogs to be involved in. As for cats, make sure they have plenty of toys to chase around the house. Feathers, balls, toy wands, and those with catnip will keep cats excited. It’s also important they have places to scratch and perch. A cat tree or tunnel will provide hours of entertainment. If you choose to take your pets outdoors in the winter, Natural Pet Center carries a wide variety of collars, leashes, harnesses and training aids for both dogs and cats. They also carry a full line of pet

clothing and paw coverings, from light shirts and sweaters, to winter coats and boots. Proper grooming is essential to the health of your pet. Because they care about the overall well-being of your animal, Natural Pet Center offers a variety of services, including baths, cuts and trims, styling and brushing, teeth brushing, nail trims and ear cleaning. They welcome all sizes, breeds and ages of dogs and cats. Natural products to help owners follow up with at-home care between visits are also available for purchase. The employees of Natural Pet Center believe in helping out and giving back to the community. Because of this, they house adoptable cats and kittens from Cat’s Cradle Shelter of Fargo. All cats and kittens have been rescued from local pounds, and are waiting for the perfect forever homes. They have all been vet checked, tested negative for FIV & Feline Leukemia, are up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped and most are spayed or neutered before being adopted. Natural Pet Center helped 58 cats and kittens get rescued and adopted in 2015. In addition they donated $5,000 to local rescues.

Fast & Healthy Dinner Meals Made Easy by Judy Kallestad
The holidays are perfect times for families to gather around the dinner table and enjoy a sumptuous meal together with hearty comfort foods and all the family favorites. But other than holidays, who has time for all the advance dinner prep? After a long day at work, school or wherever, just deciding what to have for dinner is challenging. The last thing you want to do when you get home is to spend time slicing, dicing and waiting for a meal to cook. So what are your options? Grabbing takeout on your way home is expensive. Popping a frozen dinner in the microwave is convenient, but not very healthy. Here are 10 tips to help you toss together a quick, healthy meal and take the stress out of dinnertime.
10. Check the weather. Yes, seriously. The weather is changeable this time of the year, so look at the forecast. Think about what food you might be in the mood for when it’s sleeting on Friday. Be prepared to have it on hand.
1.
Keep it simple. Soups and salads are great dinner options.
2.
Use frozen or canned foods. Protein-rich items such as seafood make prep time faster and easier.
3.
Do breakfast for dinner. No matter what time of day, scrambled eggs, pancakes or hot cereal make a tasty, satisfying meal.

5.
Buy pre-cut veggies and pre-made pizza dough for easy to assemble meals.
6.
Ask your family what they like to eat. This may seem obvious, but we can get so caught up in our own busy schedule that we forget to ask.
7.
Involve your kids. Chances are they’ll eat what they helped prepare.
8.
Keep a well-stocked pantry. Nothing is more frustrating than running out of cooking oil when you really need it. Have spices ready to dress up your beans or chicken.

9.
Go with theme nights—maybe Monday it’s tacos, Tuesday it’s fish and Wednesday it’s pasta. Keeping a narrow focus can help you make quick recipe decisions.

The term “comfort food” has been around since at least 1966 when the Palm Beach Post used it in a story. When under emotional stress, adults turn to foods often associated with the nostalgic security of childhood. They think back to foods like mac-and-cheese or chicken soup served in Mom’s warm kitchen. As the temperature drops and we start piling on the warmer layers, it’s easy to forget that harsh winter weather can still do a number on your skin. Strong winds, below zero temperatures, and even our cozy heated homes can gradually strip away your skin’s moisture, leaving it more prone to redness, wrinkles, and irritation. As the weather gets colder and the days shorter, we also tend to take longer and even hotter showers, a practice which can further exacerbate already dry skin.

For Body: Although moisturizing skin is important, exfoliation is an equally important part of keeping your skin looking radiant. Although generally too harsh for use on the face, sugar can be a great ingredient for a body scrub.

for the New Year With the approach of a new year, thoughts of New Year’s resolutions may come to mind. A good number of people make resolutions; few actually follow through on their good intentions, whether that be to get fit, lose weight, get organized, spend more time with family and friends, or save money. After repeating the cycle of making but not keeping resolutions year in and year out, some people give up on the idea of resolutions completely. But it doesn’t have to be that way. This year, why not set a goal that you’re motivated to achieve? And then commit to taking the steps you’ll need take to make your goal a reality. Consider these tips to help you set yourself up for success.

DEALING WIT H SEASONAL AFFECT IVE DISORDER by Whitney Grindberg
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” proclaims a classic Christmas song. But for 10 million Americans, fall and winter are some of the most difficult times of the year. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is depression brought on by the arrival of autumn and persists until the end of winter. The culprit, it’s believed, is the sharp decline in sunshine, which provides our bodies with the means necessary to create vitamin D for sleeping well and feeling well. A childhood friend once described her experience with SAD as a time of being acutely aware of the overwhelming quietness of fall and winter, an intense sadness over the death and decay of the plant life, the slow drain of color, and the long darkness at night. These constant physical reminders was a suffocation that settled into a numbness at the arrival of winter. Even if these feelings don’t apply to you, all of us have had occasional bouts of feeling down, so it’s prudent to be aware of our own state of health and do everything we can to promote wellness in ourselves as well as others.
LIGHT THERAPY Another option to explore is adding a SAD therapy light to your daily routine. Selling on Amazon from anywhere between $40 to $100+, these light boxes can be very helpful, especially when combined with counseling and medication. Of course, before doing anything drastic, make sure you talk to your doctor to ensure you’re choosing the right option for your situation
BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR SYMPTOMS If you know yourself to be susceptible to feeling down at this time of year, even if you don’t feel “that bad”, consider this a gentle encouragement to seek professional counseling. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a very real thing that affects very real people each year. No matter who you are or what you are going through, there is never anything wrong with getting a professional’s insight into the ups and downs of your life. The stigma

but doing so outside has added benefits: fresh air, sunshine, and a sense of victory over the very thing that has you discouraged. For those suffering from SAD, autumn might be harder for them than winter, but no matter the season there’s always something to do. Hiking, sledding, snowman building, skiing, whatever it may be, get your blood pumping out in the fresh air.

and honest we are with one another about how we’re actually doing, the
It’s estimated that an additional 10-20% of Americans suffer from a mild form of SAD, so if you find yourself having a few too many days of the winter blues this year, take some time to reflect on your feelings and explore some mental health resources. Keep a list of things you’re thankful for. Volunteer. And surround yourself with people you love, so that no matter what life looks like, it can still be the most wonderful time of year.

Blizzard Bash & The heart of winter can leave anyone feeling blue. Nothing calls for curling up with a thick blanket and a good book more than piles of snow and frigid temperatures. While that might be fun for an afternoon or two, nobody wants to become a shut-in. After a few weeks of winter, stir craziness will set in – for you and your children. Fortunately, there is an alternative. B lizzar d

is a family-friendly event that is jointly hosted by the
park districts of Fargo and West Fargo. Formerly known as Hockey Fest, the event will be held at Scheels Arena and features an indoor movie and fun indoor winter activities. New this year will be open skating, giving youngsters a chance to skate on the same ice as the Fargo Force, the city’s USHL hockey team. According to Katie McCormick, marketing specialist for the Fargo Park District, attendees will also be able to enjoy carnival games and crafts. “There’s something fun for kids of all ages,” she said. Getting through the winter months can often feel like an arduous task, but it doesn’t have to. “Bring the family and celebrate all the fun things about winter at B lizzar d Bash,” McCormick encouraged. “Visit www.FargoParks.com as the event day approaches to learn what movie we’ll be featuring this year.” The

According to Stephonie Broughton, sports and event manager at the Fargo-Moorhead Convention & Visitors Bureau, the second year of Frostival promises to be even better than last year’s inaugural event, which was a smashing success by all accounts. “Moving into year two we are excited that we have added some new events to the schedule including an outdoor volleyball tournament at Fargo Billiards and Gastropub, a cornhole tournament organized by Drekker Brewing to be held at Base Camp on Saturday in conjunction with a BURR-BQ competition, and a restructured Kids Winter Boot Camp which will host a variety of family-centric activities including arts and crafts projects, sleigh rides, create your own Dippin Dots,

a quaint comfortable taproom that they admit is a little out of the way, but totally worth the trip! Kilstone is a family affair. Brothers Grant and Brock Wigen are the brew masters with long-time family friends Fallon Blank, Jake Hartje and Paul Hankel handling the day to day operations. The brothers pride themselves on being able to brew a wide variety of beers and believe that brewing on a two-barrel system allows them to do that. “Using our current system, we’re able to keep a wider variety of beers on tap. Every time you come in, there will almost always be something different

the growing craft beer scene in Fargo. According to taproom manager Fallon Blank, “We feel really fortunate to be a part of such a booming and wellreceived industry here in Fargo. All the different breweries are so supportive of one another that it’s more like a family atmosphere, with a little bit of friendly competition mixed in!”
THE FUTURE Kilstone’s plans for the future include perfecting their recipes and continuing to provide quality and unique craft beers for their patrons. In the last year, they began self-distributing and are now on tap at several different bars and restaurants

Power of Etsy
on Display Here in Fargo by Jamee Larson
Thanks to the internet, the world is a much smaller place. It is now possible to communicate with people all over the world with a click of a button. In the art world, the internet has transformed the way buyers and sellers interact. In the past, artists needed a gallery or art show to display their work, but that is no longer the case. Art

can now be displayed quickly and easily through online platforms, including Etsy, a global marketplace that has exploded since its inception in 2005. Locally, several artists have embraced Etsy and all it has to offer. Their work ranges from jewelry and pottery to ceramics and wood signs. Although they all have Etsy in common, their stories are as unique as their products. Take a look.

A retired accountant, Monica began making elastic bracelets with her small grandchildren. A few years ago, she began making wire bracelets and necklaces with toggle clasps. “I like using them so people can put them on easily,” she said. Monica also began using semi-precious stones in her work. Each stone is unique, which makes each item inimitable. “That’s my trademark,” she said. “I never use the same pattern or mixture.” For Monica, the freedom to create and incorporate beautiful beads and stones into a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry is at the heart of her creative process. Although she has only been on Etsy for a few months, she has already seen results. “There is so much exposure.

I reach tons more people than I could have without it,” she said. “Someone from another country marked my shop as one of their favorites. That is flattering.” Monica takes custom orders and is currently running a special for customers who mark her shop as a favorite. Customers will get a coupon for a discount on their first order. “You will get a beautiful piece of jewelry that would make a great Christmas present,” she said. Unique Monique Jewelry can be found on Etsy at Unique Monique Jewelry.
Poppy and Pippa – Laura Lempe: Although Laura works full-time as the Director at Elim Children’s Center, she still finds the time to run Poppy and Pippa on the side. She has always felt a passion to embrace her creativity, but doesn’t consider herself an artist. “I feel I’m more of a maker,” she said. “I always knew I wanted to be a maker of some kind.” Poppy and Pippa features various types of accessories, including hair accessories, key fobs, pouches, totes, pendant necklaces, and name badge reels. Despite the variety, Laura has a favorite. “For me, choosing fabrics is the best part,” she said. “I love mixing prints and colors to create custom totes.”

Ashley describes her work as “modern functional ceramics, inspired by vintage/ feminine.” Specifically, she is trying to incorporate some of the patterns and imagery commonly associated with function ceramics in the past, which were specifically designed to appeal to women and children. “I’m not looking to make ‘cute’ pieces,”

It can be really scary to take the plunge into becoming a full-time maker,” she said. “It (Etsy) gives you a pseudo-anonymous platform to feel it out on and build confidence on. It’s also very quick & easy to use as an artist, you don’t need a lot of time, or have a heavy graphic design or computer background to create a visually pleasing and accessible online sales platform.”

Ashley Beth Pottery - Ashley Nordberg Ashley Nordberg comes from a long line of artists. “I grew up in a small town with a lot of extended family nearby, and we just had so many makers – quilters, woodworkers, jewelry makers, and crafters,” she said. “Most people I was around worked with their hands either professionally or were makers in their free time.” Ashley turned her passion into a career after receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ceramics from MSUM in 2012. In 2015, Ashley “took the plunge” and left her full-time job to pursue a career as an artist. “It’s been quite an adventure,” she 30 |

outlet.” Grain Designs Fargo has expanded to include a team of four full-time craftsmen (including Blain and Grant) that design furniture, home décor, art, and original photography. Most of Grain Designs Fargo’s pieces are crafted from reclaimed wood and many incorporate metal as well. “Each piece has its own history and unique story to tell,” Blain said. “Many pieces such as our steel/wood wall art and wine racks use a composition of reclaimed wood complimented by steel to create functional art.” Grain Designs has been on Etsy since the company started in 2013. “I think Etsy has created a platform for artists to reach a volume of potential clients that we could not have reached without an astronomical marketing budget,” Blain explained. “I think the power of Etsy has also inspired a new generation of artists to realize that they can use their creative abilities to provide a supplemental income, or in some cases, even start an entire business.” Grain Designs has a local showroom to meet with clients for custom products, has a holiday pop-up store, and has an online marketplace at www.graindesigns.com. Their Etsy store can be viewed at Grain Designs Fargo.
