Winter is very beautiful in the Fargo area, when every new snowfall blankets the town in nice white fluff. S P OTLIGHT When the Anderson brothers learned to ski in the late 70s, they so fell in love with the sport that they resolved it wouldn’t do until everyone else loved it too. To the enterprising brothers this meant building their own ski resort, a feat they were able to achieve thanks to the fortuitous placement of an unusually steep slope in nearby Kensington, MN, just 90 minutes southeast of Fargo. They first opened for business in 1980, and have enjoyed inviting people from across the tri-state area to shred the slopes at Andes Tower Hills ever since.

It ought not to come as a shock to learn that alpine sports are incredibly difficult to pull off without snow, and anyone who has ever skied knows all too well the gut-wrenching sound it makes when you go over a rock. Thoroughly aware of snow’s necessity for skiing, the Andersons invested in a state of the art heavy duty snowmaking system a few years back, so good conditions for skiing at Andes Tower Hills are no longer left to the discretion of the heavens.

Andes Tower Hills has three chairlifts to take skiers and snowboarders to the beginnings of their trails, the longest of which spans a quarter mile. For those who’ve not yet learned the sport, or the technique of mounting a moving chairlift for that matter, they’ve got a bunny slope with a magic carpet lift as well. If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding, the resort has dedicated instructors who’ll have you turning on dimes in no time.

S P OT L I G HT Andes Tower Hills caters to a far broader audience than the downhill crowd! For those who’d favor a different method of navigating the slopes, the resort offers a tubing hill complete with its own lift. Barriers are installed to separate the lanes there, so that your kids needn’t learn a terrible lesson in physics by colliding with an incoming neighbor.

The resort has 800 acres devoted solely to crosscountry skiing, comprising approximately 12 miles of trails. They also accommodate people who favor the fat tire bicycle, with a trail dedicated just for that novel contraption. This year’s most definitive performance of classic Christmas songs comes from Bill Sorensen and the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation of Medora, ND, a transcontinental rail line town founded in 1883. Medora has held onto their rugged frontier roots to this day, and still looks like a place that Tuco and the Man with No Name would ride into. They are home to the historic Rough Riders Hotel, named in honor of Teddy Roosevelt’s regiment in the Spanish-American War. The town also features several other points of historic interest including the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. They are best known for their Medora Musical, an Old Western act that draws over 110,000 in attendance annually.

The show was founded by former Bismarck mayor and long-time performer Bill Sorensen, who bounced back from throat cancer in 2016 to resume emceeing the Medora Musical, his labor of love. Bill does a little magic, gives historical context to the musical numbers, and keeps the evening true to Medora’s 54 years of wholesome Western performances. The cast of A Magical Medora Christmas is comprised by other longstanding performers from Medora’s musical tradition. Job Christenson, the director of Bismarck’s Sleepy Hollow Theatre, joins talented vocalist and host of the Medora Gospel Brunch Emily Walter to sing holiday classics of recent and old, including Silent Night, White Christmas, Jingle Bells, and a Badlands rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. The duo are joined by Jason Mason, who starred as Jerry Lee Lewis in the 2010 Tony Award winning musical Million Dollar Quartet. “When I was very small, we celebrated Christmas,” said Morgan Putnam, a professional Santa Claus in North Dakota. “Later on, we didn’t. I had a...unique childhood, and a family with a lot of issues. That’s why I’ve always loved Christmas. It brings me back to a simpler time. “My first time putting on the red suit, I never saw it coming. I worked behind the desk at a hotel at the time. A local pharmacist was about to have his annual courtesy photo shoot with Santa event that year, but his regular Santa had to cancel at the last minute because he was sick or had to go to a wedding or something -- so I was asked to do it instead. “When you’re first asked to be Santa, it comes as kind of a shock. Even at my age, most men like to think they look like James Bond. Santa’s a bit of a stretch from that. But I figured, hey, I could at least order the suit online and see how it looked on me. If I didn’t like it, I’d have a Halloween costume at worst. To my surprise it looked great on me, so I helped out the pharmacist. I’ve never looked back. “Word got around that I was a natural Santa Claus, and before long I was visiting homes, businesses, malls, and even less conventional places like bars and reservations. The way I see it, it’s Santa’s job to go wherever the Christmas spirit belongs, which is everywhere. Not that I’d ever compare myself to Him, but if Christ could take the trouble to bring his ministry to the east, then the least I can do is spend a few more hours in the car to go wherever Santa is needed.
