For most of us, managing our money is difficult and unpleasant. Just seeing where our money goes each month can be disheartening enough to keep us from trying to stick to our budget (if we have one at all). Somehow the impact of a price tag doesn’t take full effect until we see the cash removed from our bank account. The solution shouted at us from each cashier and advertisement is get their credit card and you’ll save save save! As consumers, “The more you shop, the more you save” is frequently one of the sneakiest lies we are told.

As with so many things in life, many small and seemingly insignificant choices have an impact on our future. We can’t escape the credit system. Establishing credit has become an

credit doesn’t have to involve any interest payments. In fact, it shouldn’t. Your credit score is built by making consistent monthly payments, maintaining less than a certain percentage of your credit limit (less than 30% is ideal), and how many lines of credit you have open.

If you are in a good place with your score and finances, then the name of the game becomes what you can get back from your credit cards. There are so many cash-back/rewards credit cards it can get overwhelming trying to decide which one makes the most sense for you.

Instead of throwing money away on interest, your ultimate goal

account with the smallest balance and highest interest rate. This is easiest to do while scaling back to just the minimum payments on your other accounts. When that account is paid in full, move on to the next smallest loan. This is what Dave Ramsey calls the “debt snowball.” If you haven’t heard of him or his classes, I highly recommend looking into his Financial Peace program. For most of us, this process feels much more complicated than it seems on paper. Applying for a credit card does slightly dock your score, especially if you have a hard time getting approved and have to try with a few different companies. The amount of time a line of credit has been opened is also important, and not until a year after it’s opened will it affect your score.

Our finances are nowhere near perfect, but we are definitely in a better place now than we were a year ago. Granted, some of this has come about due to prodigiously timed generosity from grandparents, but as long as you continue to practice wise money handling, your credit will improve, your savings will grow, and you won’t be biting your nails down to nothing in the days before your next paycheck. You can’t prepare for big financial events overnight. This means today, now, we have to start preparing for what the future may bring five, ten or twenty years from now. In the world of credit scores there are very few quick fixes for a few months of missed payments. As with so many things in life, many small and seemingly insignificant choices have an impact on our future.

Ties Be Damned: The History & Trends of

Father’s Day by Jacob Westlin

While Father’s Day in the United States is forever and reasonably coupled with its maternal counterpart Mother’s Day, the road to official national observation of the two holidays are, surprisingly, separated by more than a half century. The genesis of Mother’s Day, dating back to the often heartwrenching familial dynamic experienced during the Civil War, was ultimately recognized as an official American holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. As the movement was gaining steam in the early twentieth century, however, Spokane resident Sonora Smart Dodd — as a tribute to her father, a single parent of six — was crusading for a similar holiday celebrating dads. Unfortunately, her initial campaign was fruitless with reaction ranging from passive nods of disinterest to wholesale antagonistic blowback. After briefly curbing her crusade while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, Dodd redoubled her efforts. Over time, Father’s Day became an unofficial part of the culture, as presidents from Calvin Coolidge to Lyndon Johnson openly issued proclamations and speeches in favor of the day. Finally, in 1972, Richard Nixon signed it into law, making it an official national holiday. It seems appropriate, then, given Dodd’s relentless political struggle and the fifty-eight year gap between official parental holidays, to honor your father’s 2016 celebration (June 19) with more than… a tie. The forgettable collar-tightening garment as the go-to gift is as old as the holiday itself with very few satisfied fathers along the way. And, with today’s seemingly unlimited access to creative and personalized gifts, why waste another year giving dad a closet-clogging piece of fabric? Tools, of course, are a linchpin of the Father’s Day industry. And why not? Most men love a loud new tool that simultaneously generates frustration and envy among the neighbors. But choosing which tool can be a confounding chore. Here’s a suggestion: simply ask him what he needs. There is a cultural stigma associated with “spoiling the surprise”; however, this needn’t be a hard and fast rule. The typical man would much rather get the 55cc gas chainsaw he wanted than another Phillips-head screwdriver, even if he knew it was coming.

You’ve seen it before: people strolling through the aisles with a binder full of coupons, meticulously comparing items and prices with weekly store ads. They go through the checkout line, often with numerous transactions, and somehow end their trip paying next to nothing. “How is that possible??” you ask yourself, “and why am I not doing that too?!” While individual results will always vary, it’s definitely possible to save at grocery store and beyond – read on to find out how! GET YOUR GRILL ON: Bar-B-Que America’s Original Cuisine

Weddings, Corporate Parties, and any other events you host. Leave the work to us & have a smokin' good time

by Cindy Mennenga

YES! GRILLING SEASON IS FINALLY BACK! There is nothing that says summer’s back better than firing up the grill and tossing burgers or a big juicy steak on the grill. The aroma of the meat cooking and the sound of it sizzling away on the grill is festive and welcome to most folks. Grilling skills are acquired. No one just accidentally becomes great at running a grill without a lot of practice, study of the craft, and determination to sear up some great grub. Because there is more to meets the eye when it comes to grilling, let’s look at some simple grilling hacks that will quickly help you look like a seasoned grilling pro.

FOR OUR FOOD TRUCK LOCATIONS Facebook.com/zsbonez/

Great Grilling Hacks Clean your grill with aluminum foil. If you don’t have a grill brush, aluminum foil works great to

scrub off the remnants of previous meals. If you are short on foil, but still need your grill cleaned, you can also take half of an onion, stick a large fork in it and rub it over the grill. Not only will it clean the grate, it will also add a nice onion flavor to the food as it grills. Grill the food before your guests arrive. Cook burgers to medium-rare, set aside and just before serving, toss them back on the grill to finish cooking. This will help take some of the pressure off when you are trying to entertain, put the meal on the table, and run the grill at the same time. Double skewer smaller items like shrimp or kebobs. This keeps the food from spinning around on the skewer and makes it easier to evenly cook the food. An added bonus is that it looks nice, too! Grill fish on a bed of lemon slices. This will prevent the fish from sticking to the grill, plus the lemons will add a nice citrus flavor to the fish. Make meatless dishes for your vegetarian friends. You can skewer fruits and veggies and grill them, or wrap a variety of veggies in foil with a little olive oil and salt, wrap tightly, and toss on the grill for 10-15 minutes. This makes a great entrée or side dish.

Oil the grill grate before you add the food. This will flavor the food and help to keep the food from sticking to the grill. Marinate meats in advance. A great marinade adds lots of sensational flavors to an otherwise ordinary piece of meat. Also, a marinade tenderizes meats, so if you are cooking a tougher piece of meat, the marinade will work wonders on the tenderness of the meat and improve the flavor.

ONE THING THAT IS GREAT ABOUT GRILLING, is that while there are some basic rules about how to operate the grill and how to control the speed of how foods are cooked, there is a lot of creative freedom when it comes to grilling. diagnosed nearly two years ago with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The condition affects the nervous system and over time, reduces muscle function. Ahrens currently uses a walker but realizes that the illness will get worse with time. “If I’m in a power chair, he (Finnegan) really will be an extension of my ability to interact with the outside world,” explained Ahrens. The type of ALS that Ahrens has is one of slow progression. He had never considered getting a service animal until his barber suggested it.

“The minute I saw Finnegan, I knew he was

going to be the fifth member of our family.” “After thinking about it, even though my need isn’t that great today, getting a service dog now would let us bond and then as I lose function, the dog would be better able to anticipate my needs.” Ahrens’ hair stylist suggested looking into Can Do Canines, a local non-profit that provides service

dogs to those in need, free of charge. After a thorough application process and a somewhat short four month wait (typical wait times can be one to two years), Clay, his wife, and their two children were introduced to Finnegan. “The minute I saw Finnegan I knew he was going to the fifth member of our family.” Finnegan is trained as a mobility-assist dog, meaning he has been taught to open doors, turn on and off lights, pick things up, act as a steady lead, and even assist with laundry. “My teenagers don’t even do that!” Ahrens laughs.

Can Do Canines Can Do Canines, founded in 1989, is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities by creating mutually beneficial partnerships with specially trained dogs. They started by providing hearing assist dogs for people with hearing loss. Since then, they have become a resource for people with disabilities of all kinds, matching their needs with an appropriate service dog. In 27 years, they

The pups use ropes to open refrigerator doors and walk up prop stairs to gain dexterity. Before the animals arrive, the puppies have been raised from infancy by either a volunteer trainer or a trainer in one of the organization’s partner prison programs. Most dogs are not ready to complete their training until about 18 months of age. “We have five different (prison) programs, four in Minnesota and one in and learning obedience. The prisoners are screened thoroughly before they are allowed to participate in the program." Schwarzkopf has heard from many inmate trainers that the prison puppy programs helps them learn responsibility and gain self-confidence by honing a skill. They experience increased self-respect by doing something good for the community. Finnegan, Clay Ahrens’ mobility assist dog, was raised by two inmates at Waseca Prison, a low-security prison for females. He has a journal that the trainers kept, filled with notes, drawings and photos of the two years that Finnegan’s was with them. “We will never get to meet the people who raised Finnegan, but we are forever in their debt,” Ahrens says, looking fondly at the notebook.

GRAND OLD DAYS

GETTING GRANDER by Cynthia Lueck Sowden

It’s been 43 years since a group of business people along St. Paul’s Grand Ave. put together a single-day fundraiser for Ramsey (now Regions) Hospital. It was a smashing success. The hospital bed races are long gone, but Grand Old Day has become such a popular summer event — it attracted 300,000 people last year — that it’s been expanded this year to two days.

Although the festival is open at 8 a.m. each day, the Grand Old Days Parade at 9:30 a.m. Sunday really kicks things off. On Sunday, the 30-block stretch of Grand from Prior Ave. to Dale St. will be closed off to all but pedestrian traffic and divided into four “districts”: Entertainment, Sports and Wellness, Family Fun, and Arts and Culture. The Arts and Culture district is new this year. Located on the far west end of Grand Ave., it will feature artists’ booths, performers,

The countdown has begun! The Minnesota Street Rod Association (MSRA) is ramping up for “Back to the Fifties Weekend.” The 43rd annual event runs June 1719, 2016 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul and showcases more than 12,000 street rods, customs, classics, restored vehicles, antiques and more, all 1964 and earlier.
