ABOUT US

RIDER OWNED

We’re a bit of a funny bunch at Planet X. “Rider owned” is a phrase that’s more in common with backyard BMX brands, but it’s what we are. Grown from wanting good stuff to ride, and selling it to make some money, Planet X is built around cyclists just like you. Our sales team buy tubular tyres because they like them. We’ve got former top level pro road riders in our workshop. Our Chairman is a good level Ironman triathlete. Strava KOM’s? We have a leader board in the canteen. Heard of the Race Across America? We’ve staff members who’ve done it. There’s a Mammoth Kamikaze downhill medallist. And Tom who rides to work every day, in shorts, whatever the weather. We ride bikes. We live bikes. We love bikes. Our products are designed and built by us, for us, with all that feedback and passion; and yes… some of it purely selfishly because we want nicer gear. But by doing it for us, we can offer you the very best. We test, check, dig, compare, examine. We cut out the hype to give you the best value around. It’s our name on it. We won’t accept anything less than the best. We don’t have a Pro Team. We don’t have high street stores. We don’t put on glitzy press trips in ski resorts and send journalists home with free schwag. We don’t send out clothing in poncy boxes with free tissue paper and nonsense. Because all that comes at a price, and that all gets put on the price you pay. And our mums would kill us. And we wouldn’t do it any other way. This month sees the opening of our new Barnsley Store - our biggest destination store to date. Eight thousand feet of bike related joy, stocked with our full range of road bikes, triathlon and time trial bikes, cyclocross bikes, mountain bikes and all the clothing, tools, lights, spares and nutrition that they need. In Barnsley. It’s just off the M1. It’s on the TransPennine trail. It’s a perfect location and we took it on because it’s a perfect example of what we’re about. Thanks for reading, and we hope you enjoy the magazine. It’s got lots of small slices of what we’re about inside, and we’re looking forward to showing you them.

3

Andy Hampsten got Shimano their first Grand Tour win, with the 1989 Giro on Shimano components.

4

Shimano once made a group set with a chain with a 10mm pitch, rather than the usual half inch pitch for smoother running and lighter components for motor paced racing.

PLANET X TI PRO ROAD FROM £1999.99 FRAME Planet X Ti Pro Road FORKS Columbus Carve Carbon WHEELS Shimano RS30 BRAKES Shimano Ultegra BR-6700-G CHAINSET Shimano Ultegra FC-6750-G FRONT MECH Shimano Ultegra 6700 REAR MECH Shimano Ultegra 6700 WEIGHT 8.3kg / 18.3lb (approx) SIZES Small, Medium, Large, X-Large COLOURS Industrial Polish

Is this the perfect blend of speed and comfort? Hand crafted with the best fast road group set around. Our Pro Road frame has always attracted attention and acclaim. Now in it’s third incarnation, we sat down with our designers and worked on the tube set again, to extract the most from the material. We increased the diameter of the main tubes by 2mm, which adds 25 percent to the lateral stiffness of the main frame but only minimally adding to the weight of those tubes. And to save that weight and maintain the ride characteristics, we’ve slimmed the rear stays and added an integrated contemporary headset. Geometry remains the same, ideal for fast road use, from day long high paced rides to shorter blasts. For the first time available with Shimano Ultegra groupset. Ultegra’s flawless precise shifting makes riding the Ti Pro Road a dream. The compact 50-34 Shimano Ultegra chainset paired with 11-28 cassette make this a true riders ride, capable of powering up the steepest ascents. Our Planet X Ultralight CNC stem and Strada Compact Light bars wrapped in Selle Italia’s smooth tape complete the package. Our custom build process makes it easy to customise the bike to you - from bar width or stem length - or even wheel set choice? Why not make this a true hill climb bike and upgrade to Shimano RS-80 C24 wheel set at a great price? The Ti Pro Road Ultegra speed meets comfort, the perfect bike for long days in the saddle yet still capable of mixing it up with the fastest carbon race steeds.

WHY TI? Frames made of tubing welded together just seem to have a quality that makes us smile. Don’t get us wrong, we love the ride of carbon, but the fact that someone has cut and welded tubes together to make a frame just feels special. Couple that with the fact that we always wanted (but could never afford) a ti frame when we started out riding, we still have that attraction to the “wonder metal”. Tough, strong, light, reassuringly expensive, and truly giving a ride like nothing else, it makes wonderful frames for riders that want the best. Titanium combines the best characteristics of all the other frame materials. It rivals aluminum in weight, is as comfortable as steel and has a sprightly ride and superb handling that many riders swear by. We use a Ti 3-2.5 alloy - 94.5% pure titanium, 3% aluminium and 2.5% vanadium. Ti-3-2.5 balances the higher strength of some titanium alloys and ductility of commercially pure titanium to create an allround high performance material. Its lightning fast response to power input combined with dampening of road shock makes titanium a perfect material for the ultimate road frame. Hand welded by titanium experts Van Nicholas and featuring a 10yr warranty, this is a frame you can rely on for years of high speed road enjoyment.

SPONSORED RIDER

CROSSJUNKIE I once tried riding a cyclocross race ‘easy’. It was a lesson in abject failure. Lulled into a false sense of security of how it would be a pleasant training ride, by the time I found myself on the deck for the third time, I realised that there was no such thing as an ‘easy’ ‘cross race. An easy ‘cross ride perhaps, but when you throw a hundred or so fellow riders, a slick muddy course and a way too casual attitude together, you get a mix that guarantees incompetence and ineptitude. ‘Cross requires focus and commitment and makes very specific physical and mental demands, regardless of your ability or experience. And so to the musing I was doing recently as the new (summer) ‘cross season started. That’s the thing - nowadays you can race ‘cross for pretty much 9 months of the year, morphing from (usually) fast and dry summer ‘crosses into biblically wet and muddy winter races with only the deranged 3 Peaks Cyclocross in September to confuse the issue. Some have written about the physical demands of cross, but what does it actually feel like to race, and what does it tell you about yourself ? Whilst I don’t buy into that whole ‘pain cave’ thing where people try to outdo superlatives about how hard it is, there is no doubting that ‘cross is hard, physical and to be honest slightly unsettling to take part in. The start is not necessarily always the hardest bit physically but is always demanding in some way - get a clean start off the line and you will be riding close to your maximum physical and technical ability anyway as you try and capitalise on your position. Get a rubbish start and things get harder. You’ll still be riding pretty much full gas but mentally things just got a whole lot more difficult. Some of the fiercest battles in ‘cross races occur back from the front end of the field, in the mid pack as, in the growing fields we’ve seen over the last few years, legions of grizzled competitors fight for every corner, every scrap of rideable line.

A bad start can finish you if you’re not careful. In your effort to claw back places you try too hard, go into a sketchy corner too fast or over-accelerate on a straight and overshoot when the course turns and before you know it you’ve lost another 5 places. Let your mind wander or panic and things can go from bad to worse. Calmness whilst all about you are losing their heads is the key to the game. Easier said than done. Survive the melee of the start and you try and settle in a bit. I say settle in, as far as maintaining a lung bursting effort, staying upright round the course and avoiding marauding fellow competitors conveys a notion of ‘comfort’... Either move up if you can, usually by being smoother and more efficient, or hold your station. If you start sliding back, once again things can get more difficult as panic can set in. Panic usually means mistakes which, like casualness means an encounter with flora and fauna around the course (including course tape) or intimate contact with the ground. And so to the finale. Hopefully a triumphant gallop around the last couple of laps, in control and looking imperious. Alternatively, it may well be an undignified fight against dwindling physical resources, increasing technical ineptitude as fatigue fogs your reactions and sometimes a fight against a madly clogging bike that

WHO IS CROSSJUNKIE? Alan Dorrington is a cyclocross obsessive riding for Planet X and still striving to be more than an achtervolger (google it). Professionally, he’s a manager of homeless services for young people. The north’s leading cyclocross blogger, Planet X support him with bikes and equipment. Rubber fetishist (tyres!) and cobble fanatic, Alan represents Planet X with a unique style at races all around the UK. threatens to give up working at any moment. As I have been blessed with riding a pair of ‘anti-clog’ Planet X disc bikes, I can no longer use this excuse and am left with my own ineptitude as the likely cause of backwards progress at this point. The end of a ‘cross race is always a bitter sweet affair - the relief that the physical pain you’ve just been through is no longer there is strong, but tempered with the knowledge that somehow you’ve got to get your (almost guaranteed) filthy body and bike(s) back into or onto the car and home again in a vaguely presentable state to greet loved ones who doubtless will be waiting with bated breathe to see how you got on. But that’s where we come back to summer ‘cross - all the trials and tribulations of winter ‘cross but without the muck. Mostly.

People point at the lack of a bolt through rear end as a weakness – on this model, we don’t see it as that as it allows people to retrofit their existing wheelsets and get on board with excellent suspension action and a solid ride, for a great price.

GUERCIOTTI Part of the Italian cycling industry, and a true dynasty, it gives us great pleasure to work with Guerciotti. Our passion extends right back – our founder Dave Loughran’s first bike was a Guerciotti Record. Several sizes too big for him of course, but that white lugged steel frame stays in his memory to this day, and is one of the reasons Planet X exists. We took some time out with Paolo and Alesandro Guerciotti when father and son visited our Sheffield HQ recently. Next year sees Guerciotti’s 50th anniversary, growing the business from a small shop in Milan, through Paolo’s accomplished cyclocross career, and through the sponsorship of top level pro teams. And throughout all this, they’ve kept it “in the family” – as Paolo says, “All the entrepreneurs we admired, for example Colnago and De Rosa, they started

from nothing with a small shop. And we are Guerciotti, like Colnago is Colnago, Pinarello is Pinarello, De Rosa is De Rosa. They all founded their company with, maybe, 30sqm and then grew.” For the anniversary, plans are already afoot; “We are planning to make special 50th anniversary frameset. It will available next May. Of course, we are making some particular arrangements to celebrate; our goal is to get a professional team who could ride the Giro d’Italia. For example, Campagnolo had their 80th birthday and won the Giro with Nibali, maybe we could do the same… We’ll have a fiesta for our customers, friends and riders that have ridden throughout our history. It’s an important anniversary that’s not easy to reach for many companies. I’m planning to make two new models – one modern carbon frameset, Italian made, and one vintage steel frame - because there are still many lovers. So, we have one model to represent the future, and another to represent the past, the history of Guerciotti. Not Just in the UK, but also in the USA, in Japan, in Asia - there’s a big demand for steel framesets.”

“In a way, the most important thing is that the family name can continue. To have a real Guerciotti, Colnago or De Rosa, that’s important. There was a rumour that Colnago had been sold to Giant – it’s not true! Colnago market the figure of Ernesto, it’s the person. If you lose the person, you lose something of the company. I’m not married. I have a sister as well, so we have two options. The name is from the son, if I don’t have one then the name, Guerciotti, will stop. I feel responsible; it’s a big responsibility. Same thing happened with Colnago. Ernesto Colnago only had a daughter, who in turn had a son, Alessandro his surname was Brambilla. So, Ernesto gave him the double name… Brambilla-Colnago!” However Guerciotti moves forward, we know they’ll continue to put the hunger, heart and passion into cycling that exists in Italy, and we’ll be right alongside them, offering their products with real provenance and history.

As to the future, will the company stay in the family for another 50 years? Alesandro looks nervous…

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST BRANDS BROUGHT DIRECT TO YOU

SNEAK PREVIEW SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL... HISTORY OF AN ICONIC BRAND Guerciotti is a name synonymous with the cycling industry. From Cyclocross to TT, and everything in between, the company manufactures some of the most advanced carbon frames on the market from their HQ near Milan.

GUERCIOTTI ECLIPSE 769 80TH ANNIVERSARY CAMPAGNOLO SUPER RECORD For many Super Record is the most desired groupset available on the market, as it has been since its introduction in 1973. For this landmark anniversary Campagnolo have created their most beautiful revision of the groupset yet. Sleek, minimal carbon aesthetics with subtle red highlights – it looks incredible and will be highly sought after. It runs like a dream too. Happy Birthday Campagnolo… This is a special, once in a lifetime and ultra-limited edition bike and we’re very proud to be able to offer it to you.

In 1964, brothers Italo and Paulo started Guerciotti from a small, 20sqm shop in Petrella, Italy. Originally specialising in the selling and maintenance of bicycles, the business quickly grew to producing frames bearing the family name. With a history firmly rooted in Cyclocross, Guerciotti have produced ten world champions in the discipline, including the likes of Vito Ditano, Daniele Pontoni and Roland Liboton. More recent years have seen famous victories from the likes of Michele Scarponi in the 2010 Giro d’Italia, and the Ardenne Classic, La Flèche Wallonne. Now, with their 50th anniversary on the horizon, Guerciotti are more active than ever. With their No-Limit Carbon Engineering concept they look set to break further boundaries in the industry.

CHARLIE’S N2A NAME: AGE: POSITION: YEARS WITH PLANET X: STAFF BIKE: CYCLING DISCIPLINES: FAVOURITE COLOUR: Star Sign: Shoe Size: FIRST BIKE:

Charlie Tennick 27 3/4 Customer Service Advisor Almost 3 Planet X N2A Road and Track Red Cancer It depends what shoes I buy. Pink & black Peugeot road bike with 6 gears and sissy brakes. Won me many races.

WHAT’S YOUR CYCLING HISTORY: Started racing schoolboy crit’s at age 10 with Thurcroft CC. This led to riding track meetings in Scunthorpe after doing a taster session on Manchester at the age of 11 and getting the “track bug”. From then on had a healthy mix of road and track throughout the racing season. By age 14 the summers were spent getting driven all over the country to races. Even headed over to the continent to ride the Youth Tour Van Assen. Two years later I would find myself working for a lad called Mark Cavendish in our final year in the U16 category. I beat him a sprint you know… I had even more success when I moved up to Senior. I won the North Midlands Road League overall, beating Adam Blythe (BMC) and Ben Swift (Team SKY). In 2006 represented GB out in Trinidad in the Southern Games, and made it out there in 2008 and 2010 as well from 2010 onwards it went a little down hill. Then “the crash”. Season over and not raced since. Gutted.

THE CRASH?? Well... this is what happens when roadies get airborne… We had taken an on-one stand to a show in Willingen, Germany. I’d been hammering the freeride trail all day Friday with no hiccups. Then… the final run on Sunday before we come home Monday. I hit a 15ft table top that I’d be clearing fine all weekend, but this time hit it way too fast. Over shot the landing and landed really heavy on the front wheel. This throws me into the ground at 30mph, I stick my hands out to cushion the fall and this completely shatters my left radius at the wrist, splits my chin and severely concusses me. I was air lifted to hospital in a big orange helicopter and woke up surrounded by strange people talking a very peculiar, and I was laid on my back heading into a CT scanner. I kind of freaked out and thought I had been abducted by aliens! This was followed by two nights in the most expensive hotel room ever (according to the hospital bill). I was back at work the following Monday with a titanium plate in my wrist though! Hardcore!

BEST THING ABOUT WORKING FOR PLANET X? Working with a great bunch of people and I have to say the view from the office window is pretty amazing.

WHY THE N2A? Tis a beast. Looks great. Rides great. Really comfy and feels nice and aggressive. Why would anyone not want one? I’ve got it set up with SRAM Force, S950 cranks, Deda Carbon bars to keep the wrist cushioned. Carbon railed Prologo saddle, because it fits. And its bling…

YOU ARE WELL KNOWN FOR BEING SENT ON MISSIONS TO COLLECT FURNITURE FOR THE SHOWROOM - WHAT’S THE MOST RIDICULOUS PIECE OF FURNITURE YOU’VE HAD TO PICK UP? It has to be the pig carrier. A very strange bit of furniture. Only the boss could think of that as being a good display piece purely based on a picture on a website. But yet again. once in place in the showroom, it looks great!

BACK IN THE DAY

THINGS THAT NEVER MADE IT INTO PRODUCTION (AND PROBABLY NEVER SHOULD) As well as designing things from plain pieces of paper and the back of napkins from wholefood cafes (Dave’s favourite is actually the bits of paper you can get for flip charts, but just used as a “spreadsheet” as he calls it, spread on a table), we sometimes get offered things by factories which they’ll make us as a sample with our logos and geometry to see if we like it. Which is how this little beauty came into our lives. It’s a variety of “mini velo” as they’re called “out East” (as we call Taiwan sometimes), and looks like it should be good, and indeed is if you’re not too tall... the issue being longer seatposts, too much leverage, shorter wheelbases, and heavier riders make something that doesn’t work as well as it should. Couple with that the fact that the purchasing person who signed this off was sure it was a folding bike, and when it arrived (at quite some considerable expense) it transpired it wasn’t folding at all, well... it wasn’t a pretty discussion. It’s a fascinating beast though, and you wouldn’t guess for a moment it’s from the company who make our On-One steel mountain bike frames. A full suspension tiny wheeled road bike that doesn’t fold and costs rather more than we hoped. Wasn’t the first bike that sat around for someone to take it away, and won’t be the last (though they do often tend to have small wheels, thinking about it...)

DESIGNED & BUILT BY US

PROTOTYPES The introduction of the EN tests in recent years has given us data we can use to test frames for some aspects of stiffness and strength, but it doesn’t cover everything. Whilst you can rate a frame on a machine for pedalling fatigue and horizontal fatigue (repeatedly trying to pull the fork off ), there is no test for “no hands riding at speed whilst trying to put on a rain jacket” or “full suspension bearing durability whilst riding in Calderdale.” So we do all that ourselves. And we never let Brant do any brazing, but we didn’t have another photo to put in this section. Because all the other stuff is TOP SECRET.

OUR HEROES

THE LEGEND

JOHN TOMAC Our Chief Designer, Brant Richards, writes about legendary figures that have influenced him, and cycling.

To me, and I guess, mountainbikers of a certain age, there is no rider that comes close to the impact John Tomac made on the scene back in the late ‘80’s. I first discovered him, in the pages of MountainBike Action magazine, which as a 16yr Saturday boy in Two Wheels Good in Leeds was my only gateway to the new technology that was available for mountainbikes. The monthly arrival of our shop’s copy of MBA was a must-attend event, as we gathered round to see the new components a bike trends, in the thin half black and white, half colour magazine. Even shop ads were scoured for tales of new components we could only dream of. A cheeky, gobby, skinny sales rep used to come around and read our MBA too. We always greeted him eagerly as he produced product from the far off land of the USA that we’d seen for the first time in MBA in the previous few months. Like magic talismans or strange objects of desire, we would stare in awe at products like Roko Lever Skins, Odyssey Mohawk grips and even a “Powerbar”, all pulled from a red plastic box out the back of his (mums) red Mini Metro. That rep was Dave Loughran, the founder and owner of Planet X, who I’m working for now. It’s funny how things work out. Oh yes - before the internet, MBA was

30

our gateway to the world, condensed into a hundred or so pages. I can still remember the smell now. John Tomac featured frequently. His incredible style of 100% commitment and effort was always totally visible in every photo of him on the bike, juxtaposed against a poster-boy, calm and cool image off the bike. His bikes were always cutting edge. His Mongoose signature edition mountain bike was made with steeper geometry – 72deg head angle - for faster handling. Then came the drop bars. Drop bars?? Was he the first true Monstercrosser? Gravel road racer? Tomac was road racing for the 7/11 team and wanted to replicate his on-the-bike position across road and mountain, even racing the world’s downhill in 1990 on drop bars, to 4th place aboard his Yeti C-26 – a bike made with welded steel lugs bonded to carbon tubes - with some of the first Manitou suspension forks. For me, as a tech-geek - it’s Tomac’s innovation in materials and tech that makes him stand out. He always seemed to push companies to make better and more exciting product. The Raleigh project with a Litespeed/Easton combo of welded Ti lugs and carbon bonded tubing made an awesome race bike, and that coupled with the secrecy, the glimpses,

the custom feel… it’s a far cry from racers rolling out on moulded carbon models. As great as carbon frames are, I still have a huge passion for frames that are welded together by hand. They seem to have more soul. More passion. Today John Tomac is continuing to leave his impression on the sport – he has been involved in helping downhill racer Aaron Gwin be one of the most successful downhill racers ever. John’s also got a prodigy, following in his footsteps. His son, Eli, is a massively talented up and coming motocross racer now firmly established in the pro ranks, following an awesome ascent up the ranks, complete with tales of him lapping the whole field as an amateur. Tomac also has also had his own bike brand, working first with Manitou originator Doug Bradbury, though since that promising start, the brand has stalled somewhat. At the time of writing the Tomac brand isn’t in production, certainly a shame. But I’m sure it’s not the last we’ll hear.
