Planet X 3
Where it all began In 1988 a Mechanical Engineering graduate called Dave Loughran left Manchester University, not wanting to be an engineer but not really knowing what he wanted to do. His passion was cycling; his father was a lifetime cyclist, and he would cycle home from Uni to the pit village of Eckington, near Sheffield, for his Sunday dinner then cycle back to Manchester. He was also into the fast growing world of Triathlon. Spotting another athlete using tri-bars and understanding the aero advantage, Dave wanted a pair but the cost was out of range. And that really was how it all started. Realising that if he bought 10 pairs from the USA, sold nine pairs off, at cost plus 10%, then he got his for free, he did exactly that. His mates thought the tri bars were such a good price they asked for more kit, and the ball was rolling.
barrel chested Scouser, an ex-road racer who had won a stage of the Ras and the National 100, but fallen out with racing after going to ride pro in France and refusing the dodgy potions and needles they wanted him to use. Ray, until his untimely death a few years ago, was the embodiment of Planet X - no nonsense, upfront and honest.
Dave was a decent triathlete, in the top 20 nationally, but it didn’t take long for him to realise that his true vocation was buying and selling. It was Maggie Thatcher’s £40 a week Enterprise Allowance that kicked it off, £40 to live at home, train all day and buy and sell stuff from his Dad’s shed, in the process convincing his Mum that he had a business and was self employed. So where exactly did Planet X come from, not exactly a ‘shoe-in’ for a bike brand name? Needing a name for his business and not being able to come up with a suitable one a friend mentioned to Dave that he had registered ’Planet X’ as a company but didn’t know what to do with it. Dave did, especially as it came cheap and saved on thinking time. Thus a brand was born. Dave continued to travel the country selling triathlon equipment and bike frames to shops from his battered Ford Mondeo and he also became the first overseas distributor for Powerbar, bringing sports nutrition to Europe. However, after busting a gut building their brand from nothing, Powerbar then withdrew the licensing arrangement, teaching Dave a big lesson that has since served him well. Own and sell your own brands, then you control everything and no one can pull the rug out from under your feet. By 1995 the shed was too small, as was the room above a shop he was renting and Planet X got its first real property and its first employee. Ray Eden was a
4 Planet X
At this time Dave realised that the internet could bring down overheads and therefore bring down the prices for customers, missing out the distributor and retailer by selling direct, manufacturer to customer was the way to go. Dave teamed up with mountain bike journalist Brant Richards and Planet X hit the web. They also came up with the off the wall idea of single speed mountain bikes and gave them a name - On One - and another brand was born. During this period Planet X supported the top Northern road riders, Mark Lovatt, Wayne Randall, John Tanner etc. Who dominated the scene, cementing the company’s connection to grass roots cycling. When British Cycling set up the World Class Performance Programme in 1997, Dave Loughran and Dave Brailsford, the Planet X export manager, won a contract to procure bikes for the programme’s riders. After a few months Brailsford moved on from Planet X to join British Cycling full time. The rest is, as they say, history!
facebook.com/planetxbikes
As the popularity of cycling grew so too did Planet X, moving from a tin shed in Doncaster to a purpose built warehouse on the edge of Sheffield, then taking over the unit next door to cope with demand. All the while, though the mantra has been ‘value for money’, which Dave Loughran will tell you does not mean cheap but means giving the customer more for their money than the rivals. Dave has always had a passion for the old days of cycling, woolly jumpers, tubs maturing for years before being used and hand built steel frames. A legacy passed down from his father. Team this with his love of Italy and all things Italian, especially cycling, and you have an explanation for Planet X’s purchasing of traditional Italian brands SAB, Selcof and Viner, and more recently the famous British Holdsworth brand. Dave’s long held dream to have Holdsworth frames once again manufactured entirely by hand in the UK and made out of British tubing draws ever closer- watch this space! Meanwhile the Italian connection continues with Planet X’s sponsorship of Italian Team Idea 2010 riding Viner bikes and the Junior pro -Team Zappi, led by former Giro green jersey rider Flavio Zappi, riding Planet X bikes. The feedback from these teams aids an in-house design team led by ex- US Postal rider Jamie Burrow back at Planet X HQ. The latest addition to the Planet X stable is French shoe manufacturer Carnac, another brand with tradition and history which will allow Planet X to offer these quality products via their direct to customer platform, bringing more value to the cyclist. Planet X now operate from a 40,000 sq ft warehouse and sell product worldwide, yet still assemble all their bikes, each one customised to order.

It’s simple - we’re all cyclists; roadies, triathletes, mountain bikers, commuters, track racers or cyclocross junkies. With the Peak District just a short ride away we have the perfect testing ground for all our bikes right on our doorstep and we’ll use any excuse to slip out of work early for a ride - especially if there are new bikes to be tested! You don’t have to have cycling in your blood to work at Planet X, but we seem to attract people who are passionate about everything on two wheels. If you share our passion for cycling then why not throw a leg over one of our bikes and come ride the planet with us.
Passione per la bici - Passion for bikes. Founded in the hills around Tuscany by Viviano Nerozzi, Viner has been around since 1947. Staring business manufacturing top quality race frames using Columbus tubing, Viner quickly gained a reputation for producing race bikes of exceptional quality and beauty, a reputation that is as strong today as it ever was. The Viner name has always been linked to racing, their Pista track bikes with star-pierced lug-work are legendary and examples are highly sought after by collectors, even today. Viner started sponsoring track riders and then progressed into sponsoring road racing teams, a tradition that is carried on today with our sponsorship of UCI Pro-Continental Team IDEA 2010. Viviano Nerrozzi passed away in 1994, but we hope that he would approve of the direction we continue to take with his great brand. Today, Viner design and produce road bikes of breathtaking beauty and great performance. Bikes so good that they have been ridden to victory in some of the biggest UCI races during the 2015 season. Viner is one of the few remaining historic bike brands that have the ability to offer the most passionate customers one-off, made to measure, carbon framed bicycles, as well as offering a carefully considered range of prêtà-porter models that appeal to all cyclists.

As a former World No 1, ex UCI World Tour professional (US Postal Team), Jamie Burrow has a racing and training pedigree that is simply second to none. Hailed as ‘le Pantani Anglais’ by the French newspapers he was a fierce climber who was capable of turning in solid Time Trial performances. He holds the record for the 10 miles long “Le Plateau de Beille” climb, despite the best efforts of numerous top Tour De France riders to dethrone him. After his professional racing career ended he took to riding Gran Fondo events in Italy, winning numerous prestigious races adding to his impressive palmares.
Unsurpassed
Experience Jamie Burrow
With such a wealth of experience under his saddle, it’s safe to say that what Jamie doesn’t know about bicycles and riding probably isn’t worth losing sleep over. Over the years, he’s developed a fine sense of what is quintessentially right. And it’s all backed up by an analytical mind and great depth of experience. Jamie heads up the Research & Development team at Planet X and has overall responsibility for bike brands, accessories and clothing. He’s just as able to talk about fabric technology, as he is about the finer details of frame geometry. He has spent many years working with the best fabric mills and clothing manufacturers in Europe, designing and sourcing product, this has laid the foundation for our upcoming 2016 clothing range, that tackles all cycling disciplines and all price points. His real passion though… Race bikes. Talk to him about our new aero road bikes, Exocet and Stealth TT bikes, the handmade Viner Mitus or the Planet X RT-80 and RT90 bikes and you will see his eyes light up as he explains the technical details that set them apart. You can see his passion for racing shine through in every bike that he designs.

RT-90
Race Ready Road Bikes Toray T800 + HM Carbon Fibre 900gm Frame Weight Monocoque Construction Frame and Fork
The RT-90 is the bike of choice amongst our Planet X Team Carnac Road Race squad and it is clear to see why. Influenced by former UCI pro-rider Jamie Burrow, the RT-90 has been torture tested by our own bike team and has benefitted from hundreds of hours of team rider input.
The RT-90 has been built with one overall goal in mind and that is to deliver race winning performances time after time. Handbuilt with a blend of Toray’s T800 and HM carbon, the RT-90 offers an optimum blend of stiffness and strength for everyday racing and provides lasting durability that you can rely on season after season. The RT-90 frameset benefits from many of our advanced design features; ‘EPS Inside’ moulding technology is
used to ensure the most consistent and accurate placement of carbon in the mould. It eliminates strength robbing wrinkles on the inside of the tubes so we can create lighter and stronger frames. Our Edge-To-Edge bottom bracket design blends all the frame tubes together around the BB shell to create the widest, stiffest and most energy efficient platform for your chainset. With less flex you’ll ride further with every pedal stroke.
PLANET X SPONSORED RIDER PETER MORRIS SAYS “
The RT-90 ticks all right boxes for a carbon frame - stiff, light and responsive - as well as soaking up road buzz which equates to reduced rider fatigue. It’s also incredibly stable at speed and feels solid underneath you. Being a tall rider, it’s very rewarding to feel the power translate directly to the road with no detectable flex at the bottom bracket. I’ve raced the RT-90, hard, and it delivered instant acceleration and smooth cornering all day long, as it has done on countless training rides. The RT-90 is an inspiring ride, a bike that encourages a rider to go further and push harder, be it a recreational ride or on race day.

• Narrow seat stays and a 27.2mm seatpost, together provide supple riding comfort. Ultimately this combination aims to neautralise road buzz and as a result, reduces muscle fatigue. • Internally routed gear and brake cables, which provide a clean and uninterrupted flow to the frame, helping to reduce drag and further increase cycling efficiency. • Exacting computer simulation of the bottom bracket area has demonstrated unmatched stiffness for a frame that surges forward with every pedal stroke - enabling you to climb faster and beat the competition to the finish line. LONDON ROAD
Commuting, Winter Training, Touring and Cyclocross 6061-T6 Heat Treated Alloy Frame Wide tyre, mudguard and pannier compatible Carbon fibre fork
Almost every town in Britain has a London Road; Hence the name for the Planet X do-it-all commuter. It’s as at home in Southampton as it is in Sheffield. To give you some idea behind the design concept for the London Road we first need to tell you where its name actually came from. Sheffield’s London Road is a prime commuter artery; shared by cars, buses and bikes ferrying workers to and from the city centre. It is one of the most notorious roads in the city, known for its relentless traffic and unforgiving potholes. It is that bad, that it even keeps the most seasoned rider on their toes. With these obstacles in mind the London Road bike was born. It aims to offer the optimum blend of robust durability and riding comfort whilst delivering maximum enjoyment. To achieve this we had to get the mix just right. We used high-quality 6061-T6 aluminium for the frame - strong and light in equal measure. A carbon fork sheds extra weight, keeps steering nimble and helps soak up unwanted road vibration. The result.... a bike with nippy handling that is perfect for dodging potholes and winding through the city streets. But our thought and consideration didn’t stop there. For the London Road we spent as much time on the frame geometry as we did perfecting the materials for the frame and fork. We wanted a bike that was comfortable enough to ride every day, efficient enough that you sailed through to the end of even the longest training ride and agile enough to hit the cross trails. The answer was a relaxed geometry, adapted from our RT-58 sportive bike, with a more upright riding position. We also made sure that the frame and fork could accommodate tyres up to 38mm in size, providing about as much comfort as it is possible to squeeze into a non-suspended bike! If you want to start your day feeling motivated, fresh and ready for the days work ahead then the London Road is the bike for you. Grab one and start commuting now.

The Frame game
THE RETURN OF THE GENUINE ARTICLE Few frame builders can claim to be masters of multiple metals. They tend to stick to steel, or aluminium or titanium. Very few of them ever cross over and build frames from other materials and even fewer become acknowledged masters in more than one. Mark Reilly is one of the lucky few; he’s mastered the fine art of frame building in both steel and titanium, and has a history of innovation in design and craftsmanship that is the envy of many boutique bike builders. Back in 1987 Mark started building his first frames. He met and worked with master frame builder Ron Cooper who first learnt his craft at A.S Gillott Cycles and was trained by Jim Collier. It was time for Ron to pass his decades of experience down to Mark. “Ron imparted so much of his knowledge to me over the years, what he didn’t know about bikes wasn’t worth knowing, it was totally invaluable in shaping me as a frame builder.” By the end of the year Mark had become proficient enough to receive his Reynolds 753 approval, and was the youngest 753 approved builder in the UK. “It was a badge of honour that you had to earn and show that you understood the materials and the frame building process. At the time Reynolds 753 was the absolute pinnacle in frame tube design and you could only source the tube sets if you were approved. I still have a huge soft spot for 753 even today”. (That’s an under statement, Mark is actually the only frame builder in the UK who Reynolds currently supply with their 753 tube sets). By 1988 Mark was running the Cooper and A.S Gillott brands with a lot of help from Ron. “We made lots of frames for national champions; they all came through the doors, Simon Cope, Neil Hoban and many others. I gleaned a huge amount regarding what racers want from their bikes during that period of frame building. I also
16 Planet X
worked as a spanner for many of the UK based racing teams, following the national circuit races, it was a real eye opener, immense fun and a great foundation.”
way. Some people say that Omega were the most influential boutique frame builder of the 90’s and early noughties. I’m not sure if it’s true, maybe.”
Around 1994 Mark started the Omega brand. He set out to produce the best road racing and time trial frames possible and all of them to be made in the UK. Mark was still making frames for Simon Cope and he made a couple for Jamie Burrow who was coming up through the ranks at the time. Many National and World Championships were won on those early Omega frames. He worked out of Brands Hatch in Kent and exported frames to the USA for a big name brand- a confidentiality clause means he still can’t tell you who. He branched out into carbon fibre frames as well as making some incredibly light sub 1 Kilo alloy frames.
“A fine piece of art and a fine piece of sporting equipment - this bike is blessed with both of these things. In addition, the workmanship on the frame is immaculate” Marcel Wust, Pro Cycling. 1999 saw Mark produce the first batch of frames for the Linda McCartney racing team and more importantly he was lucky enough to meet one of his all time racing heroes, Sean Yates. “I’ve made many frames for Sean over the years, I’m very proud of that, he’s a very discerning cyclist, and knows exactly what he wants.”
“Omega stealth, the best time trial bike we’ve ever ridden and yes, its faster than the rest” said Cycling plus in issue 71.
In 2002 Mark moved house and landed in Brighton, close to the sea. Things lifted off from the new base. Sponsored riders, like Michael Hutchinson, a legendary UK tester who won the National, 10, 25, 50 mile and 24 hours did so whilst riding on Omega. Omega riders started grabbing headline results all over the UK. “I was as busy as I could manage. We were squeezing in as many customer bikes as possible in between requests for one-offs from legends like Danish pro-rider Brian Holm.”
By 1996 Mark was looking to further diversify his offerings and visited a very famous Russian titanium frame builder. Mark learnt a huge amount from him. That allowed him to bring Omega Titanium frames to the UK. “I think Omega can single-handedly lay claim to popularizing titanium as a frame building material in the UK. If you’ve seen a frame with bead blasted or mirror polish logo’s that was us first. Curved seat stay, that was us first. Plenty of brands still use those today, including a few well-known American brands, but we lead the
Mark carried on with Omega until 2006, when the very last Omega frame was designed and taken to market. “The Enigma was incredibly well received and a fitting tribute to all the people who worked and helped the brand over the years.” Late in 2006 Omega closed its doors for the last time and Mark was approached to help set-up another brand. “I consulted and designed the entire range for this brand and did the ranging and naming for all but two of the bikes. That was the first time that I’d really consulted for another brand and overseen

production rather than being hands on with it and honestly I liked the process and the freedom from the daily grind.” In 2013, disillusioned by the way the business he was working for was heading, Mark decided to quit. He spent time passing on his skills an experience to another frame builder and eventually set-up a new venture with Damon Fisher, (an award winning designer) and his oldest friend in the world Neil Fitzgerald. All three of them had been working at the same place but Damon and Neil threw in the towel a while before Mark. Mark held on until he’d handed off a full range of bikes, then he jumped at the opportunity to

set up a new business with Neil and Damon! Working together on their own they were all instantly very happy. In 2014 Nerve bikes was born, where they make custom one-off frames in steel, stainless steel, titanium and carbon fibre. “Since starting Nerve I’ve also been able to move back into consulting. I’ve been working with Planet X on their new titanium frame line-up that includes titanium gravel bikes, road disc bikes, sportive specials and more. These have all been designed from scratch specifically for Planet X and are all made by hand.” “I’m also really grateful to be working with them on Holdsworth. We’re bringing production of

this genuine piece of Britain’s cycling heritage back to the UK. We’re building them out of Reynolds tubing, which is how it should be and they are all going to be hand brazed by me. I’m really proud of that.” We agree with Mark, what could possibly be better than bringing production of Holdsworth back to the UK? A legendary British brand, proudly made from British tubing, lugged and brazed entirely by hand by one of Britain’s most highly regarded frame builders who served his frame building apprenticeship the old school way. It’s everything that die hard Holdsworth fans have been waiting for; classic frames recreated in exacting detail- the return of the genuine article.

Holdsworth Bikes Since 1933
The Holdsworth name represents eighty years of unequalled experience in the building of Britain’s finest touring and racing bicycles. William Frank “Sandy” Holdsworth started hand-making his steel frames in 1933. Over the decades Holdsworth went on to produce some of the most iconic British bikes of the 20th Century, culminating in the celebrated “Professional”, as used by the HoldsworthCampagnolo Pro Team. “The choice of a new bike is awfully important, isn’t it? How much pleasure will be spoilt for you if your machine isn’t just what you want. The cycles in this list are the outcome of my thirty years of cycling joys and I’m still an active cyclist. You can therefore place your order in my hands and be sure of a satisfactory job. If I wasn’t sure of the machines I build I wouldn’t supply them.” W.F. Holdsworth, 1933

PARKWOOD 650b The Parkwood 650b mixes the ‘Goldilocks’ wheel size with the Parkwood’s stunning alloy frame design. We stretched and massaged the original Parkwood’s trail capable geometry to create a bike that is considerably better than the sum of its parts. The 650 Parkwood is a little bit faster, a touch more rowdy and a whole lot more fun; if pushing the limits is what floats your boat the 650 Parkwood has your name written all over it. We’ve taken a bit off the back and added the length to the front of the 650b Parkwood; it’s more stable, more flickable and easier to rail the turns with.
The shorter back end digs deep, hunting for maximum traction while the slacker front end helps maximise stability when the trails start pointing downwards. Kitted out with a competitive selection of own brand parts and SRAM’s amazing drivetrain components the 650b Parkwood is ready to rock. The 650b Parkwood is our first aluminium 650b hardtail and it’s everything that we hoped it would be and it’s priced to make a serious dent in 650 trail bike market.

The Parkwood grew out of our work on the Titus Fireline Evo29, in fact, the 29er Parkwood uses exactly the same geometry but made with a much more cost effective 6061-T6 aluminium instead of the flashy titanium. And although it’s geometry is borrowed, it’s in many ways more refined, as can be seen with the addition of an integrated headset for a lower, sleeker front end. A curved seat tube and HDM front mech for better clearance in the mud, and improved shifting too. One look at the finish and you can see the effort that’s been put into this, the build quality is second to none, both lighter and more durable than we have come to expect from aluminium.

OREGON’S FINEST... Titus is a rare thing in this day and age, a true American bike brand. Born and raised in Tempe, Arizona and tested on the slopes of the National Parks that are the spine of the USA, they have more than 20 years history of creating exceptional mountain bikes. Starting out in 1991, Titus excelled in making fast, agile XC race bikes, carefully sculpted from lightweight aluminium. They rose to the challenge of making seriously capable all-mountain bikes out of carbon fibre and were an early adopter of the 29” wheel size in their El Guapo full suspension bikes. With their titanium Fireline Evo they proved they had mastery of all mountain bike materials and they continue to innovate to this very day. Leading out their latest line-up are two Riddler alloy framed hardtail bikes. With elegantly sculpted frame tubes and capable geometry these two bikes are serious contenders for the hardcore hardtail crown. There’s a 650b and 29” bike so you can chose between the quicker rolling 29er option or the more technical 650b bike depending on your preference. Titus have specified each bike with a top flight array of US sourced parts and high spec finishing kit so they offer serious value for money to match their ride-anywhere potential.

Former pro cyclist, and Giro d’Italia green jersey winner, Flavio Zappi, founded Zappi’s Pro Cycling. The team was created to offer young cyclists under the age of 23 the opportunity to make it as far as possible in professional cycling.
30 Planet X
Mentored by Zappi himself, the team’s training regimen focuses on working hard and putting the hours in on the saddle, eating the right diet and preparing for all possible outcomes that a race could throw at them. Whilst winning is always the pinnacle for any competitor, Zappi’s Pro Cycling Team has a whole lot more substance to their work ethos. They value the training, lessons in race craft and the hours of experience they gain whilst in the saddle, which inevitably offers young cyclists the potential to go on to bigger and better things.
With much admiration for Flavio Zappi’s dedication to developing a handful of next generation pro cyclists, Planet X are supporting the team by supplying a fleet of race ready RT-90’s and Alloy RT-58’s for training. Proud and full of anticipation for these budding athletes, we can only ask that you join us in supporting them throughout their journey and keep a look out for their anthracite and fluro RT-90 bikes at races all around Europe and the UK.

GET ON TRACK The ever increasing popularity of competitive and recreational cycling in the UK has been firmly built on the foundations of our success at track racing. Since Rob Hayles, Chris Hoy, Jason Queally and Bradley Wiggins first tasted medal success at the 2000 World Championships British Cycling has gone from strength to strength. Track cycling is beautifully elegant in its simplicity - men and women race against each other and the clock in the hope that they are crowned the victor. There’s purity not only to the racing but also to the bikes. Single geared, no shifters, no brakes, every ounce of excess trimmed away to leave only the bare essentials. Competition is physical and fierce; track cyclists are a tough bunch who know how to take a tumble and
aren’t scared of putting it all on the line. At Planet X we’ve been big fans of track cycling for the longest time. We were the first brand to bring a high tech carbon fibre track bike to the market at a sensible price, giving every rider the chance to ride the same technology as the pro’s. We’ve continued to develop and diversify our track offering and today it’s stronger than ever with seriously competitive models at every price point.

Bike basics
BIKE BASICS
For every different type and shape of cyclist, there’s a Planet X bike that’s perfect to help them live out their cycling dreams. Cycling should be fun, and a comfortable well fitting bike is the first step towards that goal. If you visited one of the Planet X showrooms before you purchased your bike then we’ll already have helped you choose the right size frame and shown you what your basic riding set-up on your new bike should be. For everyone else here’s our simple guide to getting the right position on your new bike.
SADDLE HEIGHT
Sit on your bike, with your pelvis level and with your right pedal at the 6 O’clock position. When the heel of your bare foot can just scrape the pedal with your leg fully extended you are at roughly the right height. Slide your foot back so the ball of the foot sits over the pedal axle, you’ll find you now have a comfortable amount of bend at your knee. Now do the same for the left leg. Remember, once you put on your shoes you’ll be another 10mm closer to the pedal and more comfortable. Don’t be afraid to experiment with saddle height, a few cm either way from this basic guide position should be ideal for you. Also experiment with lifting and dropping the nose of your saddle, somewhere between +/- 2 degrees should be fine. As far as saddle comfort goes, everyone is different; no two people are the same. Don’t be scared to try a few saddles and remember price is no indication of comfort.
HANDLE BARS
Ensure your stem is straight and in line with the front wheel and top tube. On a road bike adjust your bars so your shift levers are level or slightly upwards, this will depend on personal preference. For a flat bar bike, you ideally want the brakes and shifters to follow the angle from your shoulders down to your hands to avoid unnecessary wrist strain.
PEDALS
Pedals are your third and last point of contact on your bike; we really can’t state this strongly enough - get some good comfortable bike shoes. Make sure they have plenty of space
38 Planet X
in the toe box and that you don’t get heel lift when you pedal hard. Try as many pairs of shoes on as you can and don’t scrimp; bike shoes are like bib-shorts - a good set helps turn every bike ride into an amazing day out in the saddle. If you’re attaching your pedals please remember they have one left and one right handed thread. They should go in nice and easy with a bit of grease, if they require more than firm finger force to fit then there is a good chance you have them the wrong way round.
CLEATS
The optimum cleat position on modern cycling shoes will typically be found when the pedal axle sits between the back of the small toe and the back of the ball of the foot. If you set-up the cleats too far back you’ll find you can’t get any real power down and you run the risk of clipping the back of your front wheel with your toes. Too far forward and you’ll find you place a lot of load on the back of your calf and potentially end up suffering from shin splints. You also have to consider cleat angle. Jump up and down on the spot a few times in a row and then look down to see which way your feet are pointing. That’s roughly the trend they should follow on your bike. If you are massively toe-out or toe-in, say 10 degrees or more, then you might want to consider having a proper bike fit. A fully qualified and experienced Retul bike fitter will help you sort out your on-bike positioning for the most comfortable ride. It’s a great investment in your cycling future. Remember when you adjust your cleats that you are looking at your feet mirrored, so the directions are reversed.

SUMMARY

Cycling is an amazing pastime with many positive health benefits, whether you are a leisure cyclist or intend on becoming a serious competitor. If some aspect of your bike set-up doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t. Listen to your body and allow it to build up gently to the physical strains placed upon it by taking up a new sport. Don’t rush into trying too much too soon and you’ll be all set for years of cycling pleasure. If you are looking to become a competitive cyclist then one of the best things you can do for yourself is have a professional bike fit. Wheel Building
Mint Wheels
Mark Minting started building wheels in the 70’s back when he was in his twenties. At first he was just building wheels for his own use. He kept getting let down by broken spokes on the ready built wheels that he could buy so he started sourcing better parts that weren’t available locally.
It’s true, my main bike skills at the time were general servicing, sticking tubs on track wheels and building wheels slowly. I eventually bought a book on the subject and everything started getting better and faster from there.
The physical process of building them is lacing - fitting the spokes through the hub to the rim in the correct pattern and putting the nipples on. Tensioning and dishing - tightening the spokes to take up most of the slack and setting the rim offset relative to the hub so it fits in the frame.
“I was racing in division champs one year, I felt strong I’d had a good season and was in fine form. I had a spoke let loose during the race and the wheel went so far out of true that the tyre was dragging on the frame. I couldn’t continue the race, I had to throw in the towel. So I started having a go at building my own wheels.
My first pair took me a whole week to build
Tensioning - to take up all the slack and get the wheel close to being round. Truing - to remove any horizontal offset at the rim. Hopping - to ensure the rim is perfectly circular in the other axis. Stress relieving - to take any twist out of the spokes and to bend the spoke elbows over the hub flange. Then you apply a load to the wheel and roll it to bed everything in and adjust everything one last time. It’s the hands-on nature and the visual checking at every stage that separates a hand built wheel from a machine built one.
My first pair took me a whole week. I just jumped straight in; I didn’t really have a clue. I got someone help to finish them off and I quickly realised it wasn’t as easy as it might first look. It’s a skill, it takes a while to learn, and a lifetime to master and it requires lots of patience. I kept going from there. Other riders picked up on the fact I had new wheels, that looked good and it went from there. “Can you build a set for me?” It just snowballed from there.

That begins with a consultation with the customer; selecting the most suitable rim, spoke and hub for their needs. Sometimes they’ll already have a specific rim or hub in mind and we have to work that into the best possible build. Then it’s down to choosing the right spoke, the ideal length and then starting to build them up.

Machine built wheels are only as good as the tolerances that the machine runs at. And even then all the machine can do is thread a spoke and build a wheel to a pre-set tension as measured at the spoke head. Once a spoke is tensioned there’s often a lot of twist in the body of the spoke and machine built wheels don’t relieve this twist. They don’t stress relieve the elbow of each spoke over the hub flange and they don’t roll them under load. Hand built wheels made by a skilled wheel builder are impossible to beat. There’s a level of care and attention to detail that a machine simply can’t provide. Until they start putting eyes and hands on wheel building machines, and can program them to care about each set of wheels they make, humans will always have the edge.”

WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE DISC BRAKES A CHANCE Once upon a time you could buy a serious mountain bike that only had rim brakes; trying to find any serious mountain bike without disc brakes these days is all but impossible, and there is a good reason for that. With more stopping power, lighter lever feel and the elimination of wear at the rim, disc brakes have a whole lot going for them. They are a better technical solution and that translates into a better riding experience for everyone. The benefits far outweigh the tiny weight increase that disc brakes bring and that’s why rim brakes are set to go the way of the Dodo. With the pace of development in road cycling pushing the technological boundaries of disc brakes, and the UCI beginning to test disc equipped bikes in races, it’s certain that road cycling is heading the same way as mountain biking. Disc brakes on road bikes might still seem alien to most people, and we don’t blame you for thinking that, but once you try them you’ll be converted! If that doesn’t change your mind, we’ve listed some of the benefits of moving to discs below for your due consideration. One of the many benefits of disc brakes is the control they offer, disc brakes have the ability to stop much faster than normal calliper brakes and also offer better modulation. Good modulation allows you to apply the appropriate amount of deceleration for the conditions and to do this with a suitable amount of feedback at the lever. For road bikes this is particularly important when descending as it allows the rider to take more technical lines when cornering, due to the greater control of the bike speed. The sharper,

more responsive, braking offered by disc brakes also makes cycling in busy traffic and large groups of other cyclists much safer. Disc brakes also offer much more consistency in variable weather conditions, in comparison to calliper brakes, which really struggle in wetter conditions. On long descents and fast flat roads the ability to brake fast when the weather turns is really important to any cyclist.
THE ADDED WEIGHT IS NOMINAL COMPARED TO THE GAINS IN SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE Conventional wheels designed for calliper rim brakes have to be made to be very strong around the edge of the rim to withstand the forces put against the wheel during braking. With disc brakes this problem no longer exists, allowing wheel manufacturers to concentrate on making lighter wheels with a more aerodynamic profile.

Currently there are also many concerns regarding rim wear and overheating with rim brakes, this is a particular problem with full carbon clinchers and even with the use of carbon specific brake blocks braking is still poor. Disc brakes eliminate the excess forces that rim brakes create, which would otherwise eventually cause damage to the wheel. With the problems of rim brakes removed you are left with a more versatile wheel, which, as mentioned before can be lighter and also stronger, giving you added performance in all weather conditions and varying terrain. Other benefits of disc brakes come down to more trivial but equally important aspects of owning and riding a bike. For instance that black gunk that coats your wheels, forks and seat stays is no longer a problem with discs. And through the winter you’ll find you won’t be burning through brake pads like there is no tomorrow - the life span of a disc pad is much longer. With the removal of brake callipers, frame designs can also be much more versatile offering greater tyre clearances without drastic changes to frame geometry. Currently the downside of discs is that they are still heavier than calliper brakes, but the added weight is minimal compared to the gains in safety and performance that can be made to your wheels, bike and overall braking. If you are looking for more versatility from your bike and safer riding in all weather conditions and terrain, then there has never been a better time to buy a disc brake bike.
