with him, his former players and Pep's closest friends. Former player of FC Barcelona, Guardiola became Barça’s coach in 2008 and it could not have gone better for the club. Barça won the treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League in his first season as manager — and he became the youngest UEFA Champions League-winning manager ever! Guardiola quit as Barcelona manager, after achieving 14 titles in four years in charge of the club. Balagué, famous for having access to sources that no other football journalist does, has a light, engaging style that allows the reader to appreciate the highs and lows of Pep’s time with Barcelona. The paperback of Another Way of Winning by the Spanish journalist Guillem Balagué, will be released on August 15th. It is a biography of the manager Pep Guardiola, who came to revolutionize the world of football during his four years leading the Barcelona Football Club. His message not only been taken by the football fans but also it has been very well received in the business world because of its parallel between his work in the changing room and in business management. This work, along with his recent book about Leonel Messi, better known as the best footballer in the world, has made us to choose Guillem Balagué as our Personality of the Month.

He has shown his expertise in his books about Pep Guardiola and his latest book about Messi, which is about to be realeased. But he also speaks and knows the human side of his characters and that is the part that Plan Latino Magazine wants to highlight in this interview with the Spanish journalist.

Why write a book about Pep Guardiola, a wellknown person who has been extensively written about already? When the Editorial proposed me the idea to write this book about Pep, I told them that I would do it only if I could speak with him. He did not speak to anybody but somehow he said yes and that was what I was looking for. I did not want to know Pep the coach but Pep the person. Who was the private person, the public one?; I wanted to know what kind of relationship he had with his team and his leadership style. I wanted to know his methodology of work, how he won the matches, when he took the decisions and why. That was what I wanted to write about. Were you and the Editorial looking for a specific reader? I believe that when we write we have to enjoy it. If you are going to work in this kind of projects that lasts at least one year or more, you have to like the subject matter. Therefore, I really did not think who was going to read it; I just thought about the satisfaction of writing and knowing more about the secrets of success of Pep Guardiola. Who do you think have read it? This book has reached several audiences. From the coaching side, I have received a lot of messages from coaches who have read it. I also know that it has been read by footballers as they admire him enormously so they like to know how he works. Also, other audiences are the football fans and the general public who see it as an example of leadership and success. What is the secret of his success? Pep Guardiola has good communication skills, a character that has evolved with his sporting career or perhaps it’s just a born skill! He has used these skills positively, many people fail to do that but Pep Guardiola uses it to win matches. He has those two special attributes that help him make easy contact with his players who rely on him because being an exfootballer can create a good synergy. In the end they trust him as they see how hard he works. So, what is his secret? Exactly that: his hard work, his ability to work, his character. What makes him more than a coach, I think, is that he represents a series of attitudes that are not present in society nowadays, so everybody takes him as a model and as an example to follow although Pep has never wanted that.
Why other way of winning when Pep Guardiola had won almost everything with Barcelona? We all know that when Pep was managing Barcelona, the success on the field was achieved when it was about winning matches but the winning was done on his terms. His team played with distinction and elegance, thinking also that they had to play for the fans. Not winning for winning’s sake. When he won the Champions League in Wembley against Manchester United, one of the most spectacular matches in Europe, he said to one of his friends “I made a mistake”, meaning that he does not enjoy success. It is another way of winning, winning but suffering and here is the origin of the title. How do you see that way of winning? I am passionate about seeing those contradictions in people. Pep Guardiola is a person of absolute uncertainties and brutal doubts, a contradiction that, as mentioned in the book, makes him more Spiderman
that Superman. He saves the film in the end because he wins the matches, but he suffers because of it. To put it another way, he has the powers but does not know how to use them, like Spiderman, he is not the perfect man. But what also interests me is how tactically he managed to win, how he used his senses to make two strategies placements of players, moving or looking for space in different parts of the pitch and then he won the matches. Leaving Pep Guardiola for a moment, what is your way of winning? I am very glad that people have read my book; I am waiting now for the paperback which is going to be released on August 15th. Actually, I have written a new chapter and now Pep Guardiola is with Bayern Munich, already the Barcelona era is gone. “I couldn’t be more excited to tour again but this time around the world,” said Selena. “This has been such an interesting few months. My music has grown and I want my fans to see a new side of me. Can’t wait to see y’all on the road!” As an artist, Selena has already sold more than 10 million singles in the U.S., along with three RIAA-certified top ten debuting gold albums, and three #1 Billboard Dance Singles. Her previous album, When The Sun Goes Down with Selena Gomez & The Scene was released on 28 of June, 2011 and was certified gold in November of that year. Born July 22, 1992 in Dallas, Texas, Selena started acting at age seven when she landed a role in the popular television series “Barney & Friends,” on which was a regular for two seasons. There she met her best friend, actress/singer and fellow Hollywood Records recording artist Demi Lovato. Their connection has endured. “I was very lucky to have had the opportunity to go through so much with Demi,” says Selena. “We have known each other for so long now that we’re more like sisters.”

Her busy schedule in front of the camera did nothing to dampen her musical dreams. Selena recorded three songs for the “Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie” soundtrack, as well as tracks for “101 Dalmatians,” “Another Cinderella Story” and “Tinker Bell.” But she had broader ambitions. “I have always loved music and write all the time, but to make a career out of it seemed scary,” she says. “I focused more on acting at one point, which blessed me with my show and other projects I had the honour of working on. Now I’m putting more into my music.”

ania Maria has played virtually every important jazz festival in the world and has appeared on countless television and radio programmes and boasts 25 album releases. Her music style is mostly vocal, sometimes pop, often jazzy, and includes samba, bossa, Afro-Latin, Pop and Jazz fusion. Nominated in 1985 for a Grammy Award in the category "Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female", Tania established herself as a highly renowned jazz singer as well as a hugely influential proponent of Brazilian music.
One of the most seductive voices from Brazil arrives this month in London to keep us in the summery mood. Largely unknown to mainstream audiences, but a legend in the jazz world, Tania Maria will perform four concerts at London’s (if not Europe’s) Mecca for live jazz: Ronnie Scott’s.

Tania Maria's career straddles three decades. Her metalworker father’s passion for music was such that he created opportunities for her talent to flourish – at just 13 Maria fronted a band of professional musicians organized by him. It was as piano accompanist for her father’s weekend jam sessions where Maria first absorbed the rhythms and melodies of samba, jazz, pop music and Brazilian chorinho. Maria has never worked in anyone else's group.
the late American guitarist, Charlie Byrd, who recommended her to the late Carl Jefferson, Head and Founder of Concord Records. The label provided her with her first international commercial success with her 1984 album “Come With Me”, and continued to record her music and promote it to an international audience.

A graduate of the Juilliard School with Bachelor and Master of Music degrees and alumna of the Houston Grand Opera Studio, Martinez won the Pepita Embil Award at the 1995 Operalia II, first prize in the 1994 Eleanor McCollum Auditions and Awards from Houston Grand Opera. In the 1993 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions she was a first place district and first place regional winner and national finalist. Martinez offers candid encouragement to young singers as a contributing editor to Classical Singer Magazine. aria de Buenos Aires, is the only opera written by the Master of Tango Astor Piazzolla and the only tango opera in the world. It was written in 1968 and tells a story of a young woman born in a poor area of the city. She moves into the city centre and gets swept up into the world of music, dance, sex and crime and dies young – all of this in Act 1. The second act finds her spirit wandering round the town and commenting on it – including a chorus of psychoanalysts. She is finally reborn in a miraculous fashion which gives a kind of happy ending to the story. “María de Buenos Aires,” is an intense cocktail of poetry, tango music and dance that is performed by a contralto, an operatic

baritone and one male actor. But it’s the fourth voice — the bandoneón, the soulful South American accordion — that calls the shots and, to borrow Ferrer’s words, “burns in the back of your throat.”

I
nternationally known for his captivating, threedimensional visual illusions, Erlich was commissioned by the Barbican to create a public off-site installation on a disused lot in Dalston that has largely remained vacant since being bombed in the Second World War. The work resembles a movie set, featuring a real-size façade of a late nineteenth-century Victorian terraced house. The façade lies horizontally on the ground and visitors are invited to walk, lay or sit on it as they please. A series of large lightweight mirrors give the impression that they are standing on, suspended from, or scaling the building vertically. It is one of those bafflingly brilliant cultural oddities that has to be seen to be believed. “When we watch films we are wowed with the special effects. We loose track of how these things were made and I believe it's important not to hide the trick”, shared the artist. Born to a family of architects, Erlich’s playful installations challenge our perception of reality and spatial notion within the places we inhabit. His impeccably constructed architectural scenarios deliberately mix the real with the fictional to tease our sense of perception. He did it before in 1999 with “Swimming Pool” (now permanently exhibited at the 21st Century Museum of Art of Kanzawa, Japan since

2004) where visitors look down into a seemingly full pool of water with fully clothed people walking around the bottom of the pool, completely dry. How? The trick can be seen from below. The blurry vision of looking up when “underwater” is recreated using a thin piece of glass with water running over top of it. With “Carousel” (shown at the Liverpool Biennial in 2008), Leandro mounts a typical one-bedroom apartment — complete with bathroom, kitchen and dining area — onto a real time spinning carousel, with the daily objects moving up and down like horses do on merry-go-rounds. “Dalston House” captivates both kids and adults alike and it is impossible to resist the temptation of being photographed sitting comfortably on the edge of the window of this three-storey house or hanging from the cornice. “People explore their own creativity within the work and it feels very empowering. For me, this is the best feedback I can get as an artist, to see the public engaged, enjoying, that they will remember the experience.” Come along with friends or family (and your or camera). Other Memorable Interactive Installations
I
nteractive installations are not to be left alone. They are meant to be explored, to play with and to be enjoyed. These are works of art on their own, but the participation of visitors brings a new perspective. They become alive with their help and in return, they turn into an experience for the participant — usually with quite moving results. If you like “Dalston House” try to catch the following installations if you have a chance.
“The Phoenix is closer than it appears” (KUNSTEN, Museum of Modern Art, Aalborg, Denmark, 2011) and "Infinite Rock" (Sharjah Biennial, 2013) by German artist Thilo Frank. Large mirrored boxes with green fluorescent lights and a swing hanging in the centre. Sitting on the swing is quite an experience, with your own image being repeated into infinity, evoking an egotistical but fragile emotion.
"We’ll See How All Reverberates" (Sharjah Biennial, 2013 by Mexican artist Carlos Amorales. This installation is based on the organic shapes of Alexander Calder’s mobiles, but in place of abstract forms, thirty-five different cymbals are suspended from the ceiling. The cymbals are intended to be played by exhibition visitors as well as by professional musicians, transforming the quiet of the gallery space into a noise that is harmonic or chaotic.
“Scattered Crowd” (Messe Frankfurt, 2002) by New Yorker choreographer William Forsythe Thousands of white balloons are suspended within large architectural spaces, such as museum foyers, banks or stations (e.g., King’s Cross in 2009), inhibiting the beauty of space and but boosting human emotions. Participants are encouraged to inflate a balloon and add it to the work. Will be shown at the Hellerau European Centre for the Arts in Dresden from 17th to 20th October 2013
Cut Piece (1965) by Japanese artist Yoko Ono This piece was performed in Kyoto, Tokyo, New York and London. It is usually performed by Yoko Ono coming on the stage and in a sitting position, placing a pair of scissors in front of her and asking the audience to come up on the stage, one by one, and cut a portion of her clothing (anywhere they like) and take it. The performer, however, does not have to be a woman. “Cut Piece is about freeing yourself from yourself… Traditionally, the artist’s ego is in the artist’s work. In other words, the artist must give the artist’s ego to the audience. I had always wanted to produce work without ego in it. I was thinking of this motif more and more, and the result of this was “Cut Piece”. Instead of giving the audience what the artist chooses to give, the artist gives what the audience chooses to take. That is to say, you cut and take whatever part you want; that was my feeling about its purpose. “Cut Piece” was recently re-enacted at Southbank Centre in June this year during Yoko Ono’s Meltdown arts festival, with Canadian singer Peaches taking the stage.

Summer has arrived in London after three years of absence. Warm evenings with a refreshing breeze and hardly any drizzle, offer a perfect setting to be enjoyed outdoors. On this issue we want to highlight a few movies that warrant re-visiting.

n the fascist Spain of 1944, after Franco’s victory, an eight-year-old girl, Ofelia, is sent along with her heavily pregnant and sick mother to live in the countryside with her new stepfather — a ruthless captain of the Spanish army and a loyal supporter of the dictator. Sadistic Captain Vidal is not fond of the girl or his new wife. Vidal worries obsessively about the newborn, which had better be a boy for the sake of both females). During the night, little Ofelia meets a fairy who leads her into an eerie but captivating fantasy world where she meets an old faun in the centre of a labyrinth. He tells her that she is a princess from a kingdom in the underworld, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will remain mortal, never to return home to her family as the princess she is — and will never meet her real father.

Her attempts at the tasks get her in trouble with her stepfather, who, together with his fascist troops, are determined to exterminate resistance fighters who hide in the hills and woods. Staff at the cottage where Ofelia lives tries to conceal her escapades from the angry captain.

“Pan’s Labyrinth” received 22 minutes of applause at the Cannes Film Festival. Björk was so affected by this film that after seeing it, she went home and wrote the song "Pneumonia". Mexican Director Guillermo del Toro repeatedly said "no" to Hollywood producers, in

spite of being offered double the budget , provided the film was made in English. He didn't want any compromise in the storyline to suit “the needs of the market". In fact, he gave up his entire salary as a director to see this film become realised in the way that he conceived it.
Stephen King attended a screening of the film and sat next to Guillermo del Toro. According to the director, King squirmed when the Faun chased Ofelia. Del Toro compared the experience of seeing King's reaction to winning an Oscar.
This enchanting film won the BAFTA for Best Film not in the English Language. It was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007. Sadly, it lost to the German “The Lives of Others”, but won three Oscars for Art Direction, Cinematography and Make-up.

ased on a true story and set in a lawless slum of Rio De Janeiro between 1960 and 1980, "City of God" tells the story of two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood who take different paths: one becomes a drug dealer and the other a photographer. Zé Pequeno (Li’l Zé) owns the city by causing violence and fear as he wipes out rival gangs without mercy. Ruthless greed for power of these gangs turns the streets into a battlefield. Buscapé is a frail and scared young boy and his only way to keep out of trouble is by exposing the brutality of the slum through his pictures. Things are out of control between the last two remaining gangs and police are terrified to go near the slum (and the ones who do, go mostly to collect bribes). Residents are lucky if they live to the age of 20. Violence escalates and more people get dragged into this world of crime that doesn’t seem to end. Welcome to the City of God, a favela where even God would fear to tread .
We hear Buscapé telling Marina how "he never took a hot bath". This was not scripted. Rodrigues and Moretto were talking off camera during a pause in the shooting. The boy (who lived on the slums) was telling her about his life. The scene where the gang prays before the war was not scripted either. During the shooting a young boy, who used to be in a real gang, asked the director if the group was not going to pray like they always did before any important confrontation with the enemies. Meirelles told him to lead the prayer as they shot the scene.
Winner of BAFTA for Best Editing and nominated to four Oscars (including Best Director and Best Cinematography), this beautifully shot film is a gem that shouldn’t be missed.

he less you know about this film before you watch it, the better. It is beautifully scripted and filmed to take you by surprise through an emotional journey. One of my favourite films of last year.
RUST AND BONE (DE ROUILLE ET D’OS) (2012) (Dir. Jacques Audiard)
Jacques Audiard is the director of the superb, Oscar-nominated movie masterpiece Un Prophète (A Prophet). Matthias Schoenaerts is completely believable as an emotionally handicapped, primitive macho man who means well but inevitably ends up making a mess of everything. Stunning Marion Cotillard (Oscar-winning actress for her role as Édith Piaf in La Vie en Rose in 2007) delivers a powerful but contained performance of a strong-willed woman who refuses to be a target for compassion. His lack of sympathy and understanding is almost an advantage for her. Although they have almost opposite characters, they find each other in their mutual experience of being different from the rest.
Did you know? This film is based on a novel, who’s main character was a man. The director felt he had enough men in his previous movie A Prophet (set in a male prison in France) and decided to change the role for a woman. Marion Cotillard was shooting Rust and Bone and The Dark Knight Rises at the same time.

hen two Chicago musicians, Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon), witness a massacre, they want to get away from the gangster responsible. Desperate to get a gig out of town, they disguise themselves as women and join an all-girl band heading to Florida. They certainly enjoy being around the girls, especially Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) who sings and plays the ukulele. Ok, I know this is not a Latin film but the translations of its title all over Latin America and Spain are priceless.

ne of the classic of the Spanish golden age theatre, Fuente Ovejuna by Lope de Vega is brought to London by the Chronic Love Foundation CLF Art Café at The Bussey Building. This brilliant tragicomedy, written in 1612 and set in 1476, tells the actual historical incident that took place in the village of Fuente Ovejuna in Castile against the sexual tyranny of their feudal lord Fernan Gomez de Guzman. When a magistrate sent by King Ferdinand II of Aragon arrived at the village to investigate the villagers, even under the pain of torture, responded only by saying “Fuenteovejuna did it”. This play is performed on Sundays and has always a different cast line-up with live bands providing different sound tracks to each show.
I
nspired by William’s Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story explores the rivalry between two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds: Sharks from Puerto Rico and the Jets, a Polish-American working class group. Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, leader of the Sharks. The deep theme, splendid music, beautiful dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre. Something’s coming, Maria, America, Somewhere, Tonight and a Boy like that amongst the lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein music. The original 1957 Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and produced by Robert E.
Griffith and Harold Prince, marked Sondheim’s Broadway debut. It ran for 732 performances before going on tour. The production was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 1957.

In 1961 was released West Side Story the musical film as the same name, directed by Robert Wise and Robbins, starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn. The film won ten Academy Awards out of eleven nominations, including Best Picture. Rita Moreno who played the role of Anita, won the Best Supporting Actress Award.
Pepe, the second in command of the Sharks, will be played by the Spanish dancer Javier Cid who trained in the Professional Conservatory of Dance in Madrid. He earned DaDa (Dance and Drama) Awards in London consisting in a scholarship to complete his training at the English National Ballet.
The UK tour includes a high talented cast led by Katie Hall as Maria and Louis Maskell as her lover Tony. Katie has most recently played Christine in the Phantom of the Opera and Cosette in Les Miserables, whilst Louis appeared in the national
This vibrant new cast is directed and choreographed by Joey McKneely using the Jerome Robbins full, original choreography. Joey has worked on Broadway and was the former assistant to Jerome Robbins so he brings the true essence of the original production.

ith music and Lyrics by the Chilean composer, pianist, actor and director Carlos Miranda, Riverside Studios Hammersmith presents Variété, an amazing and extraordinary music theatre piece originally written, directed and performed by Lindsay Kemp with his internationally well-known company. It is 1936 in Hamburg, Germany. A travelling naïve joins a sordid circus with an eccentric cast. He plays “The Bird Man”, a successful performance in the show, who has an obsession with the deaf trapeze dancer Maria. On one crucial moonlit he abandons his timidity to finally embrace his violence and create revenge. This is the first time that Lindsay Kemp has ever allowed another company to produce one of his works and it is directed by Kinny Gardner who was in the original cast and has been a soloist in the Kemp Company for over twenty years. Carlos Miranda´s association with Lindsay began with his earliest creation for Rambert Dance Co. He then joined the Lindsay Kemp Company writing the music and collaborating in the creation of various dance-theatre productions that toured Europe, the Americas, Israel, Singapore, Japan and Australia.

et in Rio de Janeiro in the swinging sixties, The Decorator is a farce about seduction, revenge and mistaken identity. While the girl from Ipanema is sunbathing at the beach, Marcia, 40 years old from the apartment across the road, is in a very difficult position: Jane, the wife of her lover, has come with the express purpose of taking her revenge by telling Marcia’s husband of his wife’s infidelity. he Chilean Director Juan Carlos Zagal brings to Edinburgh his “Teatrocinema group” utilising theatre, films, comics, animations, photography and music. Based on the original novel by Régis Jauffret, translated by Carlos Gonzalez and adapted by Juan Carlos Zagal and Montserrat Antequerra, Histoire D’amour tells the story of an English teacher who meets on the underground a woman who he decides will be his wife and mother of his children. Abuse, guilt and perversion are part of this tragedy where responsibility disappears under the shadows of impunity and silence. In a black and white universe, this is a love story overwhelmed by asphyxia, perversion and obsession told from within a tortured mind.

he best classical music, theatre, opera, dance and visual art from around the globe will be, one more time, the main attraction of Edinburgh, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, where it will take place its International Festival from 9 August to 1 September.
It has been over 60 years since this tradition started in Edinburgh and its reputation has crossed all borders that companies have to apply years in advance to ensure a place on it. As sole promoter of its events, the Festival covers all the administration costs of an artist – fees, travel, accommodation, venue hire and the
promotion of the performance. In return, the Festival retains all income from ticket sales. This year, the Festival has invited, among others, two Hispano-American productions: Histoire D’Amour, a Chilean play; and Don Quichotte du Trocadero, from the Spanish choreographer Jose Montalvo.

I
t has been 9 years since he arrived in London, full of expectations and dreams. Today with his own band and company he is performing in places like Trader´s Vic at the London Hilton Hotel or Salsa Bar on Charing Cross Road. Victor Triviño is the Director and creator of this new proposal to the world. The Latin Mafia Band as he defines with his own words "It is a new sound. We want to be recognised as a Latin Band that is not just salsa but a new vibe, a mix of Latin and European sounds". The Latin Mafia Band has began from scratch and now it is ready to show the Londoners they can represent the energy, music and rhythms of the new Latin wave that is making people from around the world fall in love with Latin America. The band is formed by Victor Triviño, drums and director; Joicel Triviño, timbales; Luisa Santiago, piano and voice; Veronica Monreal, voice; and Mayte Poyato, singer. All of them are living in London for different reasons and have met here to create this new concept. "At the moment nearly all of us live for the music, it is our way of living and we can do it here, but it would be very different if we were living in Colombia, says Victor. When I was in Colombia I had to start studying Computer Engineering but I was not feeling happy. One day I decided to leave the course and started studying music. My family went crazy, because in Colombia is nearly

impossible to make a living from music, so they considered I was mad and ready to fail. My mum, Luz Marina Acosta was the only one who supported me. I started studying music in Barranquilla, my hometown, but then I felt I needed something more so I decided to come to London and discovered everything I was missing back home, comments Victor about his beginning with the music. When I arrived in London, everything was difficult, I had to pay my rent, my food, everything. I was living on my own and back home my mum told me she will just send me money for the first month, and then it was me and my music. I remember one month after arriving to London, she sent me 40 pounds, the last credit from home. That was just enough for the travel card and some food. But soon, I had nothing left and I had to pay my rent and other things. So I decided to take my drums (a special drum from Colombia that I brought with me) and I started playing music in Oxford Street; I was there alone playing my drums, in a city that it was new to me and with nothing more than my dreams. As soon as I got 5 pounds I left but that day I thought I can make my life here doing what I really like, music". After playing in many places, travelled with bands around Europe, Africa and in the UK playing some Latin, ska and two years at The Lion King Musical, it was time to start his own project.
Plan Latino: When did this project start? Victor Triviño: We have been playing together for many years, especially with my brother who is also in the band. But after playing for some years at Trader´s Vic we decided to show the Londoners what a Latin Mafia Band could do. PL: Why is that, what is the difference with a Lati n Band that we have already known? VT: Well... we have seen how English are attracted to new rhythms and they like the Latin wave, but Latin Rhythms are influenced by many music, African, Cuban, European and we have something special. We all come from Latin America but we all have lived here for a while and that definitely has put a stamp on our music and us. We are a fusion between Latin America and Europe. PL: Why The Latin Mafia? VT: Because we are always the same guys
playing and playing around. We have become a Mafia, in a good sense of music. PL: Who influences you? VT: Many artists, Pitbull, DLG, Carlos Vives, Joe Arroyo all of them are big pioneers on this idea of showing new rhythms to the world. This mix of what the world has become. PL: What could you say to someone that is just starting on music? VT: Believe that you can succeed, work hard and never forget that if you are really passionate and good on what you are doing one day you will reach your goal. oao Bosco is one of Brazil’s most compelling singer songwriters, known as much for his distinctive style as a guitarist as for his versatile voice and as a dynamic performer. An artist that rarely leaves Brazil for extended periods, Bosco is hugely popular in his homeland, yet a secret pearl still to be discovered by a larger international audience. For most of his early career Bosco wrote for Brazilian jazz legend, Elis Regina, contributing to some of her finest material. With his career rise coinciding with Brazil’s military dictatorship (1964-1985), Bosco became one of the main figures of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) with his work frequently censored. In 1977 he wrote his most personal protest song, “O Bebaido e a Equilibrista” (The Drunkard and the Tightrope Walker), which became the theme song of Amnesty International. Despite his fame in Brazil, Bosco remained unknown to audiences outside the country until he made a guest appearance with jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour in 1988 a few years later, he mounted a major tour of the US. Composer, guitarist, singer and arranger, João Bosco reaches a 40 year career in

2012. It has been four decades of activity in Brazilian music influencing several generations of singers, guitarists and composers. After releasing an album in 2010 of unpublished songs where he resumed the historic partnership with the poet Aldir Blanc and reinforced the success of the partnership with his son Francisco Bosco. Now “40 Anos Depois” (40 Years Later), the new CD / DVD, is a celebration of his career, bringing new interpretations to its repertoire, with the participation of his peers from the first team of MPB: Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque, João Donato, Toninho Horta, among others. Aleh Ferreira Aleh Ferreira is a singer and composer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The man has the groove of soul, funk, samba and reggae and will indulge the audience in a new set as part of his latest release Aleh + Samba. As a true “carioca” he has music in his DNA, starting his trajectory as part of the Bantus reggae band on the 80’s, whose gigs included opening for “The Wailers”. He was also part of legendary bands such as Black Rio and worked as producer for Cassiano and Tim Maia. In 2002 he had Jorge Mautner as his “musical godfather” and his single Sou do bem showcased in more than 50 countries as part of Putumayo compilation –Brazilian Grooves. Currently he is considered as one of the representatives of Lapa, Rio de Janeiro’s nest of Samba, having worked with great artists such as Robertinho Silva, Marcelinho da Lua, B Negao, Carlos Malta, Wagner Tiso, Marcus Suzano, Moacyr Luz and Marcelo Yuka amongst others. Alongside his gigs and tours, he also works for Mangueira’s youth project “Mangueira do Amanha” and performs in jails as part of educational programmes.

• Double measure white rum • 8-12 leaves fresh mint • 1 teaspoon fine grain brown sugar • 2 teaspoons light brown sugar (or just a tablespoon of caster if you don’t have any brown) • ½ lime cut into segments • Lots of ice • Soda water to top up at the end • Cocktail shaker, measure/jigger, muddler, tall glass, long spoon.
Here’s what you do: 1. Put the lime, sugar and mint in the shaker and smash it all up with the muddler. 2. Add rum and ice, and stir with the spoon. 3. Pour into the glass – my friend added a bit more rum at this point! 4. Top up with soda water. 5. Serve with a mint sprig and straw!

Here’s what you do: 1. Chill the glass. 2. Pour enough salt onto the plate that there’s enough to cover it or at least make a ring for the glass rim. 3. Wipe a small amount of Cointreau around the rim of the glass then push the rim into the salt. Do this at an angle and you’ll get a more satisfactory result. 4. Pour the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and a pinch of salt over ice into the shaker. 5. Shake well and strain into the glass. 6. Garnish the edge of the glass with the slice of lime.

The transfer market is very active during this time, some would say at fever–pitch, and the media do their best to speculate and to inform of the possible changes in the pipeline. The transfer curtain closes on August 31, but many clubs in the Premier League have already chosen to strengthen their squad with latino players.

England, as the inventor of the sport, can be considered the mother of the beautiful game. But in the modern world, the game has several influences and the Premier League nurtures great players. At the time of press there were 59 players, a mixture of old and new signings, from 12 Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries playing in the League. The origin of these players is split between the following countries: ranked by the most numerous, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile. On the bench, the most acclaimed development has been the signing of Chilean engineer Manuel Pellegrini for Manchester City, who came close to directing the club six years ago. There, he will join the new signing of the Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho, who, at this time, claims top spot in the transfer market to the UK at a cost of £34 million (July 2013). Manchester City has been able to fund these very expensive players due to the backing of the UAE investment group which took majority control of the club five years ago. In addition to filling the stadiums, the Premier League fills bars throughout the country with diehard fans. Televised football is now a very important revenue
stream for the hospitality sector and the onus is on the League to provide entertaining games to ensure this part of the financial backing of the game. Between sips of a cold beer, Spanish journalist Eugenio Blanco, based in London, recently brought to light an interesting sociological study of social networking applied to football, which detailed the most-followed personalities and clubs worldwide. For example, the most followed league in Europe is that of the Premier League, with more than two million devotees, more than double that of the Spanish La Liga, "which not only has fewer supporters compared to the Premier League but also has fewer followers on Twitter. "In terms of clubs however, the team that has the most virtual fans is Barcelona, with 9.5 million, whilst in the UK, Arsenal just lead Chelsea, with 2.5 million and 2.4 million respectively. Meanwhile, we can welcome names like Paulinho from Sao Paulo, (Tottenham), the Andalusian Jesus Navas (Manchester City), the Uruguayan Guillermo Varela (Manchester United) or the Mexican Ulises Davila (Chelsea), who originally came from Guadalajara. All of these newcomers to the Premier League hope to have a productive season in readiness for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Uruguayan independence day falls on the 25th August which is a great opportunity for everyone to open their best bottles of Tannat; the wine considered a national heritage by the Uruguayan people. Text: GERARD ROVIRA

ts excellent geographic location has consolidated Uruguay’s position as a privileged producer of wines with international standards of quality, not only in the region but also in the world, in the last few years.
THE GREAT URUGUAYAN TANNAT
Its vineyards lie between the 30th and 35th parallels south, just like in Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand, whose grapes and labels are known worldwide. Both the littoral and the central areas host countless wineries whose number increase year after year. They are located mainly in the Departments of Colonia, Carmelo, Canelones, Rivera and Montevideo.
It is a very rare grape. The Uruguayan wineries have been granted international awards for making wines based on this grape. With blends of softer grapes such as merlot, Tannat wines have a unique taste, even better than that achieved in the French countryside, from where this variety arrived in the late nineteenth century.
Uruguay is considered as a country of temperate climate due to its clay soil, all-year sunshine, average rainfalls and temperatures. In this state, vineyards rest on rocky terrains or across the plains featuring soft undulations which are typical of the French landscapes that gave origin to each of the grapes that reached these lands. In addition to the extraordinary knowledge and human quality of those who make Uruguayan wine, the climate and the soil have combined to make a perfect combination for classic grape varieties like Merlot, Cavernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Tannat to be granted awards in the most recent international competitions and contests for these specialities. There is no doubt that the mixture of these factors make Uruguay into an ideal destination for lovers of good wine. People on vacation have the chance to visit several wineries during their tours of the country as well as the chance to sample these ever-improving Uruguayan wines.
In the mid nineteenth century, the Spanish, German, Italian, Swiss and French introduced these grapes into the country to give origin to the first Uruguayan wines. Grapes came from France (tannat and folle noir) brought by the first vintners in the country: Harriague and Vidiella and it was Harriague who planted the first vineyard of tannat in the City of Salto. After 130 years of adaptation, the tannat vines have grown to be typical of Uruguay because Tannat is the grape variety which became best adapted to the Uruguayan soil and climate. This is the reason why it has become the most prominent grape variety in all Uruguayan wineries. Ideal to accompany any table with its purplish soul and body, tannat is the best wine to accompany the food at Uruguayan barbecues, known throughout the world as the most complete and appetizing. Today, after so many years, we can assert proudly that this is a ccgrape that has become a synonym for the Uruguayan soul.
