elcome to 2024 lovely people! We are thrilled to be back with an exceedingly important issue of Plant Planet. This month, it’s all about the people in plant. That’s right, dear readers, this issue delves deep into the hearts and minds of those that keep the construction industry alive; the highs, the lows, the good, the bad, we’re showing it all! What was it Rick Riordan said? “People are more difficult to work with than machines. And when you break a person, he can’t be fixed.” We’re here to find out why that is. Flannery trailblaze on our front cover, proudly showcasing their inclusive work ethic and how important it is to champion diversity and women in construction. On that theme our editor, Rebecca Phillips, has gathered together a group of 8 wonderful women who divulge their journeys in the industry, and how they have overcome the adversity they have faced. Our company profile comes to us courtesy of Thomas Plant Hire, who tell us all about how their wonderful team have helped them to continually expand their business year on year! This month’s Industry Corner welcomes Lord Muck to the stage, who sits down with us to talk about his years in the industry, how to harness the beast that is social media, and just how isolated people are becoming in today’s tech reliant world. But it’s not all doom and gloom on the machinery level! CASE Construction team up with us to talk about their F-Series, and how that not only helps site safety, but operator experience as a whole. “It is good people who make good places.” Remember that! Happy Reading! The Plant Planet Team

TITAN ENTERPRISES CONTINUES TO BREAK GROUND IN THE MINING INDUSTRY

F

or over 25 years, Titan Enterprises’ Oval Gear flowmeters have been incorporated into heavy drilling and rock crushing machinery for use in the Mining and Aggregate industry. Due to their rugged design, these meters provide reliable performance in extreme conditions. For over 25 years, Titan Enterprises’ Oval Gear flowmeters have been incorporated into heavy drilling and rock crushing machinery for use in the Mining and Aggregate industry. Due to their rugged design, these meters provide reliable performance in extreme conditions. Initially working with JCB, Titan developed a bi-directional/dual flow Oval Gear flow meter that was fitted to drilling rigs in salt mines. These underground drill rigs are machines designated for drilling in the rock face as well as in concrete and ground. The relatively small flow measuring devices are incorporated into these vast machines to monitor the flow of oil and additives. Large rock crushers and other equipment are used to break and remove rocks of various hardness and toughness, to extract the mineral-rich material, and process the ore by extracting the desired compounds and metals. McCloskey International is one such heavy machinery manufacturer specialising in crushers and mining processing equipment. McCloskey International approached Titan to see if we could make a flowmeter able to monitor the oil flow on a rock

crushing machine. The requirements were for a much bigger thread than would normally be used for the specified flow range. They also wanted to see the meter in operation. The central ‘drum’ of the crusher which does the hard work is basically a huge cylinder rotating on large bearings. These bearings had to withstand the side load induced during the rock crushing so the oil flow and pressure are critical. It was vital that the flowmeter did not impede this flow and so had to have a low pressure drop even at full flow with cold, highly viscous oil. Titan’s OG5 model fitted the flow requirements but the standard unit’s 1” BSP threads were considered too small, risking a restricted oil flow. We set about redesigning the OG5 model in aluminium and with 1¼” connections to reduce the pressure drop at minimum temperature and maximum flow. We installed an acrylic cap, a see-through cover so that the operator could visually verify oil flow. A cable loom was fitted so that the flowmeter could be plugged directly into the customer’s wiring loom. The final touch was to anodise the body of the meter to match the colour of the machines they were being fitted into, making these meters a very distinct OEM product. The resulting flow device has proved to be very reliable and to date over 600 of these specialised flowmeters have been installed in the McCloskey family of rock crushers over the last 10 years.

As well as adapting designs to meet customers’ specific process needs, such as high-pressure requirements and to aid chemical compatibility, Titan’s standard OG5 flowmeter has since been redesigned. These compact rugged positive displacement flowmeters incorporate a new machined stainlesssteel, high viscosity design for both the body and caps, which has also enabled an increase in the standard design pressure for these units. Titan’s OG Series of flow meters are designed to give reliable, high performance across a wide range of applications. Almost immune from the effects of varying liquid viscosity, density and temperature, the measurement performance of oval gear flowmeters improves as liquid viscosity increases.

HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY MANAGE WORKSHOP OIL STORAGE

U

nfortunately, oil is one of the most common reports of pollution, contributing to over 15% of pollution incidents each year in the UK. It can harm people, plants and marine life, damage rivers, soil, destroy natural habitats and drinking water supplies, as well as ruining workshop and garage environments. Oil storage regulations are governed by the control of pollution (oil storage) (England) regulations 2001. This requires anyone in England who stores more than 200 litres of oil to provide secure containment facilities for tanks, drums, intermediate bulk containers (ibcs) and mobile bowsers. There are different regulations for England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and in this article, we take a closer look at oil storage for all workshops.

BEFORE

after

12

february 2024

THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF OIL STORAGE

The basis is always to create an area which is safe, clean and appropriate. Basic rules include: 1. Oil must be stored at least 10 metres away from inland or coastal waters, flood areas and 50 metres clear of a spring. 2. Tanks should be on flood level or below ground level and must never be stored above roof level and kept away from areas that risk damage via impact, machinery and weather. The full Legal requirements are outlined in detail in the Oil storage regulations for businesses - GOV.UK (www.gov. uk) website which covers storage of quantities of 201ltrs and above. There are however different regulations that apply, depending on where you store your oil, how much you store and what you are using the oil for. If you choose not to comply with these regulations, you can be served an anti-pollution works notice and face prosecutions.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF OIL CONTAINERS REQUIRE CAREFUL STORAGE

Lubricants are supplied in many ways, bulk, barrel, and various drums and small packs to meet the needs of a wide customer base. Bulk and barrels are generally supplied to commercial workshops and the other sizes to both the commercial and retail market. With the exception of bulk, the remaining sizes can all come in either plastic or metal containers depending on the supplier and also the type of product. Lubricants stored in a factory fresh sealed container will not normally degrade. Obviously, metal containers can be subject to corrosion over extended periods. In essence, the largest single container must be contained within 110% of its volume. Storage and movement of containers is guided by lifting at work regulations, so heavy containers are to be lifted correctly and with suitable/appropriate machinery.

witham

BEFORE THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT CAN AFFECT THE LUBRICANT

Heat is a huge risk to oil, not only from a fire point of view, but also from a volumetric point of view. Oil volume will increase as the temperature rises so contained vessels need to be vented. Once a container is opened it will come into contact with the environment and whilst lubricants often contain Antioxidants they will start to oxidise when in contact with the atmosphere. If for example you were to leave a sample of hydraulic fluid in a glass jar open to the atmosphere for a period of time you would see it darken in colour as this happens. Elevated temperature will, as will almost all reactions, increase the speed.

IS THERE A WAY TO MANAGE LUBRICANT STORAGE SUSTAINABLY?

Yes! Oil not only needs to be stored safely and properly because it’s the law, it should be stored to help with the environment and health and safety. Bulk Storage tanks are an ideal solution of metal tanks in your garage that removes the need for all plastic packaging. The simple colour coded tanks have sight gauges, taps or pumps and come labelled with each lubricant name and its application and are filled in bulk deliveries, saving the need for plastic drums and waste. This system is easy

news

PLANT PLANET

after to use for all the workshop team, helps keep working spaces ship shape, avoids spills from containers and helps avoid important oil contamination, whilst helping the environment by using no packaging. With annual maintenance the longevity of bulk tanks will last over 50 years. This is a very sustainable process indeed as the defunct metal tank can then be simply recycled and the metal used again. This method of storage and use, also helps tick all the regulation requirements for oil storage and keeps users and the workshop environment as safe as possible.

WHAT’S THE NUMBER ONE THING THAT GARAGES NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN STORING LUBRICANTS

The best piece of advice we can give is to treat lubricants as if you were storing drinking water. Always avoid storing any products outside where water could penetrate the lid or seal. Many people assume the seals on barrels are watertight, they are generally not and are simply used as an anti-tamper method. If no other option but external storage is available always store barrels on their side. Moisture and Dirt ingress are the two main factors. Moisture can be overcome by keeping the bulk storage at as close to the same temperature as possible at all times. In addition to this, using air operated or electric transfer pumps and guns stops

the contamination of oil in dirty transfer jugs. If jugs are used, they need to be kept in a clean environment also, upside down and empty when not in use. Bulk storage tanks should be fitted with return flaps to stop wastage of unused clean oil which can be returned to the bulk tank.

ARE THERE WAYS TO OPTIMISE SPACE WITHIN THE WORKSHOP FOR EFFICIENT LUBRICANT STORAGE? There are many innovative storage solutions on the market, bulk tanks are excellent for larger volume products and bulk tanks can simply be raised off the workshop floor and downpipes fitted to both fill and empty. A simple process which will not impact the workshop floor space at all. Bunded racks and trays are also available for smaller sizes. Try and avoid storing products for extended periods and just buy as much as your immediate needs require.

finning CAT

FINNING TRANSFORMS SERVICE OPERATIONS TO BOOST FIRST-TIME FIX RATE TO 75 PER CENT

A

dopting a new approach to service operations has seen Finning UK & Ireland score a 75 per cent first time fix rate for customer equipment faults – achieved by leveraging condition monitoring technology and historic data from over 5500 remote diagnostic sessions. The remote services and diagnostic team at Finning, the world’s largest Cat equipment dealer, has introduced the new approach to its service operations using data from machine telematics, which is then cross referenced with historic service data to diagnose the problem remotely. This approach has radically improved the first-time fix rate for its customers – minimising machine down time and ensuring their engineers’ time is used most effectively. Over the last three years the team has facilitated a shift from offering a reactive service and support function to one that is fully proactive. Drawing on data from real-time remote diagnostic sessions – with the team conducting up to 300 each month – the engineers use this information to accurately predict asset faults and issues remotely. This enables them to take the necessary action – such as ordering the right part or parts – so that the engineer visiting the site can resolve the issue during just one

16

february 2024

site visit, ensuring the customer’s assets are returned to operations as soon as possible. Strategic Operations Manager for Finning UK & Ireland, Nikolaos Kakoudakis, said: “Having the ability to remotely diagnose an equipment fault is crucial for both us and the customer operating that equipment. For us, being able to identify the precise nature of the fault means that when the engineer goes out to site, they have the correct parts and can resolve the issue quickly for the customer. This ensures any downtime is kept to an absolute minimum, which can be costly and cause project delays. It also reduces operational inefficiencies on site. “There’s a real sense of pride among the team, who genuinely want to give our customers the very best level of servicing support and expert guidance. Everyone in the team should feel very proud of the hard work and exemplary work ethic.” The new approach has been so successful that Caterpillar®, during a recent visit to the company’s Leeds branch, awarded the team a certificate recognising their ‘excellence in condition monitoring and remote services’. Speaking about the award, Lavanya Ajesh, Managing Director at Caterpillar Commercial, Northern Europe, said: “We are focused on leveraging and

optimising remote services and condition monitoring to accelerate customer satisfaction and services growth. The dedication of the Finning team towards using these tools to improve first-time fix and to drive service growth is highly commendable. Their work is helping pave the road in this journey. Congratulations and well deserved on the recognition as a best practice dealer in this field globally.” Commenting on the achievement, Chris Hepworth, General Manager for Service Operations at Finning, said: “Over the last three years, the technology and remote services team has delivered transformational results demonstrating improvement month-on-month. The team provides services to exceed our customers’ needs, from breakdowns to proactive interventions preventing failure. These results have been achieved through teamwork and collaboration with the wider service operations team. Well done to everyone involved.”

THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE CEA

I

n December, sales of construction and earthmoving equipment continued to fall, leading to a 29% drop in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. Retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment showed further reductions in December, resulting in Q4 sales ending up at 29% below Q4 2022 levels. This was the lowest quarterly level of sales since Covid at c. 6,500 units. For the full year, sales in 2023 reached 34,300 units and were 8.8% below 2022 levels. This was 2,000 to 3,000 units below the level of equipment sales seen in 2021 and 2022, but these were the highest years since the financial crash in 2008. As highlighted in previous reports, sales in the two halves of the year were very different in 2023. In the first half of the year, sales were 8% above 2022 levels, but in the second half they ended up 25% below the previous year’s levels. Sales in the early months of 2023 were still benefitting from the “catch-up” impact of supply chain constraints in 2022, which extended lead times for the delivery of machines. In contrast, equipment sales in the second half of 2023 experienced the impact of declining levels of construction activity, particularly in the housebuilding market. The pattern of sales for the major equipment types is shown in the second chart below which compares sales in 2023 with the previous year. This shows percentage changes in sales for the different machine types. Wheeled Loaders (+10%) ended up as the strongest-selling product last year. Following strong sales in Q4, Telehandlers (for construction) saw the second-highest growth levels and ended up at 4% above 2022 levels. The fall in equipment sales overall in 2023 was very much driven by declining sales of excavators, with Mini/Midi excavator sales 10% below 2022 levels and Crawler Excavators 18% below the previous year. The pattern of sales on a regional basis in the UK and N Ireland is shown on the map below for 2023 compared with 2022. Similar to earlier updates, only two regions saw sales ahead of 2022 levels last year. This was in the South East of England (+18%) and Scotland (+5%). Amongst the other regions, the areas recording the biggest falls compared with 2022 were the North West of England (-23%) and London (-20%). Equipment sales in the Republic of Ireland are also reported in the statistics exchange. Sales in Q4 continued on a declining trend and were 13% below 2022 levels. However, sales for the full year still ended up at 1% above 2022 levels. As reported previously, this was due to a very strong start to the year, where sales were 24% above 2022 levels in Q1. The construction equipment statistics exchange is run by Systematics International Ltd. This scheme is run in partnership with the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), the UK trade association.

KUBOTA WILL CELEBRATE ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN EUROPE IN 2024

2

024 marks the 50th anniversary of Kubota’s arrival in Europe with the opening of the first subsidiary in France in 1974. Since then, the company has been showcasing its expertise and reliability, following its For Earth, For Life philosophy. Throughout this year, Kubota will celebrate this event of particular relevance to the Group. Kubota is now one of the leading players in the European agricultural and construction machinery market, where it stands out not only for its innovative and advanced products, but also as a global solution provider. Since its arrival in Europe, one of its three strategic regions, along with Asia and North-America, Kubota has strived to establish a commercial network in which mutual trust with its partners and distributors has been the key to growing in an environment as competitive as the European one. This, together with its offer of highly competitive and reliable products, has made Kubota one of the leading brands in the areas of Construction, Groundcare and Agriculture. Kubota, founded by Gonshiro Kubota in 1890 in the Japanese city of Osaka, stands out not only for its innovative and advanced products, but also as a solution provider. Moreover, Kubota engines have become a trusted power source for many OEM customers in Europe. a global manufacturer and provider of solutions. In this sense, the company has focused on providing services that increase customer satisfaction, becoming their trusted ally, giving continuity to the company’s motto: ‘Kubota, On Your Side.’ The creation of Kubota Holding Europe (KHE) in 2017 reinforced the company’s corporate identity in Europe, thanks to the teamwork of employees from all its divisions, who combine synergies to provide the best services and products to both distributors and end users.

kubota

A continent structure in continuous growth

Kubota’s commitment to a market as demanding as the European one has been firm from the outset. Throughout this half century and since the establishment of its first European subsidiary in France in 1974, Kubota has continued to expand in Europe with numerous subsidiaries in Germany, UK, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland and Turkey to support the growth of these markets. Today, the company has a workforce of approximately 5,000 employees and more than 1,300 dealers and distributors in the Europe region. To better serve its customers and guarantee them greater proximity and responsiveness, Kubota Europe has set up structures that are closer to its European customers: The Innovation Centre Europe (ICE) advances Open Innovation, and accelerates the development of new business in the Netherlands; KRDE Research Centre, a R&D hub based in France in tune with the main markets to develop new, efficient and effective tractor models that respond to the specific needs of crops, field conditions and work processes of European farmers; Two European Distribution Centres - NEDC in Alblasserdam (the Netherlands) and SEDC in Cavaillon (France) - with the goal of developing a larger assembly capacity

and logistics system for Europe, enabling Kubota to deliver products in a faster time frame. And a 22,000 m2 European logistics centre based in the north east of France for the distribution of spare parts in Europe to guarantee better availability, responsiveness and quicker delivery. This is complemented by Kubota’s factories in Europe: Kubota Farm Machinery, a tractor production plant established in the north of France in 2015, and Kubota Baumaschinen GmbH, a construction machinery plant in Zweibrücken, Germany, established in 1989. Further to this in 2012 Kubota acquired the Kverneland Group, a leading company in agricultural implements and efficient farming solutions, which allowed Kubota to develop and leave a strong footprint in the agricultural sector in Europe. In recent years there have been other acquisitions of major players in Europe such as Pulverizadores Fede or Gianni Ferrari, giving Kubota the opportunity to offer more comprehensive and complete solutions to customers. “Celebrating 50 years of Kubota in Europe, I am honoured to acknowledge the resilience and innovation that have defined our journey. As President of Kubota Holding Europe, I extend my deepest gratitude to our dedicated team and loyal customers, dealers, distributors and partners in the region. This milestone marks not only our past achievements

LIGHTHOUSE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY CHARITY SHINES IN 2023:

T

A YEAR OF RESILIENCE AND GROWTH

he Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity continues to be a steadfast beacon of hope for those in need and in 2023, they saw 4438 people reaching out for support through its 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline, a 30% increase on the previous year. Their charitable spend also increased by 12% to £3,727,386. This support has been delivered against the backdrop of a challenging year for the industry, with continued increases in the cost of materials, the cost of living crisis and ongoing labour shortages. The charity is in the unique position of being able to offer every aspect of emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing support. This means that they deliver a truly holistic approach, responding quickly to the needs of the construction workforce and ensuring they are equipped with the life skills to facilitate a sustainable future. Charity caseworkers played a key role in this achievement and through collaboration with other charitable organisations and ensuring that people accessed their statutory entitlements, they leveraged a staggering £1,524,508 of financial support. One of the charity’s most successful front-line interventions has been the hugely popular MakeItVisible on site initiative. In 2023 the team visited 390 worksites and engaged with more than 25,000 site workers. These on-site visits are a crucial component of ensuring the message of support reaches some of our industry’s most vulnerable workers, including the trades and contractors. Last year alone, the on-site team made a lifechanging and life-saving impact with 147 workers experiencing suicidal thoughts. Through simple conversations they were able to provide immediate support, implementing positive interventions and signposting to expert help. Earlier in the year, the charity unveiled the groundbreaking MakeItVisible Wellbeing Portal, www.makeitvisible. info, fostering industry collaboration. This comprehensive resource provides information, advice, and guidance, directing users through authentic video case studies to support pathways for all aspects of emotional, physical and financial wellbeing. Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity, emphasised the positive impact, stating, “We are making a difference in the lives of those who reach out to us. The increase in families helped and charitable spend is

encouraging. I’m also encouraged to see the industry’s commitment to a culture of positive wellbeing and the support of the MakeItVisible campaign is testament to that. By joining forces, the industry is transforming work sites and creating a lasting impact on lives. As part of our charity’s ongoing efforts to diversify support pathways, we recently introduced a live online chat service offering immediate support from our helpline advisers. As well as providing help without the need for a telephone conversation, the service also offers a real time translation service which extends our support to those who may not have English as their first language.” The charity’s Wellbeing Champion Support programme offers professional support to over 12.000 mental health first aiders in the industry. This ensures that those who bear the emotional weight of the workforce are supported in managing their own wellbeing as well as enhancing their ability to provide continued support to others. In 2023 their Critical Response Service provided vital support at 50 locations for those affected by a serious or fatal onsite incident. A specialist team provide

immediate support offering a ‘safe space’ for people to share their concerns and signpost to specialist trauma counsellors if necessary. The charity’s Wellbeing Academy caters for the diverse learning styles and needs within the industry and is aimed at equipping workers with the soft skills they need to navigate today’s challenges. Recent additions have included new self paced elearning courses along with Lighthouse Wellbeing Exclusives, such as their Suicide Awareness courses which were attended by 341 workers last year. Reflecting a year of resilience, growth, and impactful initiatives, the charity will publish their 2023 Impact Report in May 2024 once the final audited accounts have been approved and filed.

CP HIRE – FLEET UPGRADE 2024

N

orthern Ireland-based CP Hire, with seven depots throughout Northern Ireland, and depots in Bristol, Cardiff and Swansea, announces a full fleet upgrade and enhanced support services at all their operating bases commencing early 2024. To facilitate this fleet restructuring, CP Hire will hold a stock rotation sale managed by Euro Auctions, the leading auctioneers of heavy construction machinery and agricultural plant in Europe. This ‘off-site’ sale will take place at Balla Lorry Park, Severn Road, Hallen, BS10 7GD, on 29th February and 1st March and the sale catalogue will include over 400 well-maintained machines that will go under the hammer in this

unreserved sale. Following a change of management, with David and Andrew Hutchinson taking full control of the day-to-day running of their GB operation. Director, David Hutchinson, the son of the founder Norman Hutchinson, outlines the plans of the company to completely overhaul all plant stock and service provisions within the business. “Since 1971, we have been providing quality equipment and first-class customer service, which have been the cornerstones of our operation. Buying only quality brands and keeping our fleet fresh and well-maintained, alongside our ‘on-site’ service provision, has seen us develop and maintain a very strong and loyal customer base.” “The next stage in the development of our business and our new management

structure in England and Wales, reinforces our service provision to our customers which focuses on our on-site back-up service and quality equipment. Our vision is to emulate what we do in Northern Ireland, where we strive to be on-site within 1-hour of a breakdown. Our plans for 2024 include investing in a new plant across all depots in Northern Ireland, Bristol, Swansea and Cardiff, plus a new fleet of service vehicles.” “The management team in Northern Ireland will have an active role to play on the ground, as we build on our England / Wales presence along the M4 corridor, helping to assist our existing and wellestablished team in those depots. It will take a couple of months to implement the service plan and fine-tune the systems, but we are very confident we can be consistent with our fleet quality and (due to geographical areas) keep to our 2-hour breakdown service goal.” David Betts of Euro Auctions, comments on this upcoming sale, “This is a very tidy inventory of fresh, wellmaintained machines. CP Hire does take very good care of their fleet, and a regular rotation is commonplace. Whilst this sale will draw a good crowd in the local area, the Euro Auctions strength is reaching out to an international audience. We expect good bidding on multiple machines, such is the quality.”

TOOLSTATION RAISES £743,000 FOR MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT IN 2023

T

oolstation, one of Britain’s fastest-growing suppliers of tools, accessories and building supplies and part of Travis Perkins plc, raised £743,000 for its designated charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support, in 2023. Since launching the charity partnership in 2020, Toolstation has raised over £2,000,000 for Macmillan, to help fund vital physical, financial, and emotional support to the millions of people living with cancer across the UK. This is part of Toolstation’s commitment to supporting the community and committing to making positive changes. Fundraising took place across the business, with colleagues and customers at its distribution centres, head office and 550+ stores all getting involved over the last year to help reach the figure. Toolstation colleagues competed in the London Marathon last April for the third consecutive year, raising over £90,000 in the process, whilst a team of 20 colleagues took on the Tough Mudder challenge in August, raising over £8,000. The business also sponsored several colleagues to shave their heads for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of its Brave the Shave campaign, including Contact Centre colleague Fiona Staples, who raised over £1,000. Other fundraising initiatives included a 563-mile walk in March hosted by Toolstation’s Finance team to support their £2,500 goal for 2023, and a 992-mile dog walk challenge undertaken by 16 colleagues in May. Throughout the year Toolstation

colleagues across the UK showed their support for Macmillan by hosting regular store raffles, bake sales, fancy dress days and Macmillan Coffee Mornings, all of which were backed by customer and colleague donations. Fundraising efforts for Macmillan also came through Toolstation’s collaboration with micro-donation charity Pennies, which enables customers to add an optional donation to the charity onto their purchases when paying by card and contactless. Toolstation’s Managing Director, Angela Rushforth says: “It’s amazing to think that we’ve raised so much money thanks to the generosity of our customers and colleagues. The wonderful work and support that Macmillan provides helps so many people and we’re so pleased that the £743,000 raised will continue to support the charity in its efforts to be there for everyone living with or affected by cancer.” Kate Goldman-Toomey, Director of Corporate Partnerships & Philanthropy at Macmillan Cancer Support, says: “We are extremely grateful for Toolstation, and its unwavering commitment to raising vital funds for Macmillan. Through sheer determination and dedication, Toolstation colleagues and customers have once again raised an absolutely staggering amount. “As a charity that relies almost entirely on donations, it is the generous support of the public and valued partners like Toolstation that allows us to continue doing whatever it takes to give people living with cancer the support they need,

when they need it most. We can’t thank Toolstation colleagues and customers enough for their steadfast support.” Pennies CEO Alison Hutchinson CBE, added “Congratulations to the team at Toolstation and your amazing customers for making over 650,000 micro-donations for charity in 2023. These small acts of generosity have enabled all those pennies to add up to £210k for Macmillan Cancer Support making a huge difference for the great work they do so brilliantly. Thank you to the Toolstation’s team and to all those customers who press ‘Yes’ – your small acts of kindness make such a difference.” During 2023 Toolstation also supported several additional charitable initiatives. It continued its partnership with the Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) social enterprise, supporting volunteers aged between 14-24, who may be disengaged or excluded from mainstream education and training to learn DIY and trade skills. Last year, Toolstation supported several VIY projects including the transformation of a sports centre in Leeds, the refurbishment of a Strong Roots allotment in Norwich, and the renovation of sheltered housing accommodation provided by youth homelessness charity Centrepoint.

CEO FOR NEW AGRI-TECH CENTRES ANNOUNCED

I

n the autumn of 2023 three AgriTech Centres – Agri-EPI, CHAP and CIEL – formally announced their intention to merge in April 2024 to form an integrated business spanning the entire agri innovation ecosystem. This position was supported by Innovate UK, who, recognising the importance of the agri industries sector, invited the Centres to develop plans to become an Agri-Tech Catapult. This work is progressing well, and the Chief Executive Officer for the new business has now been appointed – an important step to expedite the successful delivery of the merged business, which will provide a major boost to UK agri-tech. Dr Peter Quinn, Chair of the Transition Board responsible for the merger and the future Agri-Tech Centres, said: “I am delighted to announce that Phil Bicknell will be the CEO for the new Agri-Tech Centres business from 1 April. We conducted a comprehensive recruitment process, internally and externally, to identify the best candidate to lead the business. Phil clearly demonstrated his vision for the future, along with the experience, skills and energy he will bring to the role. “This appointment represents an important step in our process, as we move into the final weeks before the merger. There remains a lot to do, in collaboration with our partners, but our talented teams are looking forward to the

opportunity to make a real impact in the future through innovative agri-tech.” Commenting on his appointment, Phil Bicknell, future CEO of the Agri-Tech Centres, said: “The transition to a single agri-tech business is a pivotal move to accelerate innovation for our sector and I feel privileged to have been asked to lead the organisation. “By combining the Centres’ UKwide capabilities, with their world-class research facilities, investment and innovation expertise and extensive networks, the new business will be a hub for UK agri-tech to thrive. This merger will simplify the landscape, be completely inclusive and make it easier to navigate. That applies to everyone we engage with, here in the UK and internationally – meaning we all work smarter and more efficiently, removing sector and technology silos. It is the catalyst to think about the bigger picture, to challenge our food and farming systems, and to think further forward. “I firmly believe that becoming a Catapult will be the game-changer. Effectively, it elevates the profile of the agri industries – forming a strategic partnership with the government. It puts food and farming on the same level as sectors like digital, energy and satellite applications, which benefit from a longterm and joined-up focus. We’ll have critical mass and a single voice. There will be no excuses for us not being on the

government’s radar and vice versa. “This is such an exciting opportunity and, working with an excellent group of colleagues and sector partners, I can’t wait to get started.”

CAPJA CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF INNOVATION IN CONSTRUCTION TECH

B

righton-based tech company, Capja, has reached a major milestone – their fifth anniversary. In these five years, they’ve not just grown; they’ve led the way in the plant-hire and lifting sectors of the construction industry. Starting with a vision to simplify software in a complex field, Capja has more than delivered – they’ve been a force of change. From a small startup to an industry innovator, Capja has bagged five important grants along this journey. Each grant is a nod to their commitment to bringing new tech to construction. But it’s more than just staying in the game for five years; it’s about making a real difference and innovating every day. Josh Wallman, Co-Founder of Capja, looks back on the journey: “Reaching five years is a big deal for us. We started with a simple aim: to make heavy machinery management easier and more intuitive. CapjaDocs, our main project, is our way of sticking to that promise. It’s not just a piece of software; it’s our dedication to more sustainable, smarter construction practices. This anniversary is as much about looking forward as it is about reflecting on our past – we’re excited about the possibilities that AI and Machine Learning hold for us.” The second year of Capja, marked by the onset of COVID, was a turning point. It was then that Capja pivoted and focused on innovation. They applied for a ‘Fast Start’ grant from Innovate UK, to evolve their QR product to something new. Construction sites are often areas that attract a lot of paperwork, and this is where Capja’s solution solved a key challenge. CapjaDocs helped reduce the reliance on paperwork at construction sites, thus aiding the environment and enhancing operational efficiency. Over the years, Capja have also supported innovations which have been implemented into their customers’ business models, meaning they have not just delivered groundbreaking tech, but assisted companies for investment with the likes of I-Construct and TALE. One customer, Kieran McGovern, explains: “The impact of CapjaDocs on our business has been substantial. By using secure QR codes on our ID cards, we’ve managed to offer immediate access to essential documents while maintaining the utmost security. It’s a game-changer for the crane hire industry.” In their fourth year, CapjaDocs was recognised through the LoCASE grant, which affirmed the product’s positive environmental impact. Also in the fourth year, Capja began a fruitful partnership with NOSY Creative Agency. NOSY’s creative expertise and technological know-how resonated with Capja’s ethos. Together, they’ve created not just a website, but a digital narrative that supports Capja’s growth, reinforced by a fresh brand identity and a collaborative promotional video with Island Crane Hire. Matt Greg, Founder of NOSY Creative Agency, reflects on the project: “Working with Capja has been one of the highlights this year. Their commitment to sustainable technology fits hand-in-glove with our creative philosophy. This wasn’t just about building a website or a brand; it was about capturing the essence of a company that’s quietly revolutionising the tech side of construction. We’re proud to have played a role in sharing their story and supporting their journey into new territories of innovation.” As Capja steps into the next chapter, backed by a new Innovate UK award to explore AI and Machine Learning, they’re not just celebrating the past. They’re gearing up for a future filled with more innovations, ready to keep shaping the world of construction tech.

DERBYSHIRE CONSTABULARY’S RURAL CRIME TEAM WINS 2023 ROB OLIVER AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING EFFORTS IN COMBATING CONSTRUCTION AND AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY THEFT

D

erbyshire Constabulary’s Rural Crime Team has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Rob Oliver Award from the Construction Equipment Association (CEA) for excellence in the fight against construction plant and agricultural machinery theft. The coveted industry award, first presented in 2021, is given annually to the most proactive Rural Crime Team in the UK. Winning forces must meet strict criteria based on the use and support of the construction industry’s official security marking and registration scheme, the Construction Equipment Security and Registration Scheme (CESAR) database. Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster, recently invested £15k

32

february 2024

in the countywide roll out of the CESAR scheme, giving farmers an opportunity to have their vehicles, machinery and equipment securely marked with the industry standard CESAR Security Systems and ‘Datatag’ products to help deter thieves. The scheme is already active in North-East Derbyshire, Bolsover and South Derbyshire. The Rob Oliver Award measures the success of Rural Crime Teams against the number of machine checks made on the CESAR database, the number of recoveries made and any other activity associated with the use and promotion of the CESAR Scheme. Derbyshire’s Rural Crime Team was singled out for its exceptional effort to promote CESAR Security to the farming

community in Derbyshire. It was also among the top three UK police forces nationally for making checks on CESARmarked machinery. More than £2m worth of machinery has been protected in Derbyshire via the team’s efforts with more installations of CESAR happening every day through a network of CESAR dealers across Derbyshire. In addition, since the Rural Crime Team has been in place, supported by the rural PCSO, there has been a marked improvement in engagement with rural communities. This is evidenced by the increase in subscriptions to the Derbyshire Alert FarmWatch Group, which now has over 2800 members from just 500 in 2022.

cesar Here is the backstory of how the team came to win the 2023 Rob Oliver Award In 2020, PC Emerson Buckingham initiated a project in Derbyshire to enhance farm machinery security using the CESAR system. He successfully convinced three local authorities to finance a scheme that subsidised CESAR for local farmers. This funding was partly used by the police to protect replacement machinery and ATVs, provided at no cost to those at higher risk of theft. The initiative proved effective, as machinery secured with CESAR was less frequently targeted by thieves. Encouraged by this success, more local authorities in Derbyshire began funding the CESAR scheme. By 2023, every local authority in the county contributed to a fund, substantially supported by the Derbyshire PCC Angelique Foster, who provided matching funds. This increased the fund to over £20,000, allowing CESAR to be offered to farmers and machinery owners at half price.

The police continued to use CESAR for marking theft replacement assets, which further demonstrated its effectiveness as a theft deterrent. Meanwhile, PC Buckingham and his team actively promoted farm security and forensic marking throughout Derbyshire, contributing to a significant reduction in related crimes. Their efforts led to their recognition as the 2023 winners of the Rob Oliver Award for Excellence in the Fight Against Construction Plant and Agricultural Machinery Crime. Congratulating the Derbyshire team, Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster said: “I am proud of this national award. The team deserves full credit for their hard work and efforts. Our rural communities deserve a firstclass response to the issues that threaten their safety and livelihoods. Derbyshire’s Rural Crime Team works hard to listen and understand these unique problems, and takes robust proactive action, alongside partners, to prevent more of these crimes and bring rural criminals to justice.”

news

PLANT PLANET

Foster added, “Machinery theft costs farmers and agricultural businesses millions of pounds every year. They deserve the full support of the police in preventing these disruptive and costly losses. I am pleased Derbyshire’s Rural Crime Team is recognised as the best in the UK for its proactive work and will continue to push the force for further improvements.” Rob Oliver, founder of the CESAR Scheme and retired CEO of the CEA said, “The Derbyshire Rural Crime Team have really embraced the tools provided by the CESAR scheme to combat machine theft in their county. They recognise that thieves shy away from CESARmarked and registered equipment and so prevents crime. They have formed a great partnership with local Councils in their area and with Angelique Foster – the Police & Crime Commissioner for Derbyshire – who has provided her full backing. A great day out for me to learn about the valuable work of the rural crime officers.” Suneeta Johal, the Chief Executive of the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), said, “The Derbyshire police force’s efforts in combating machinery theft are commendable. ‘Can Do Attitude’ Drives Thomas Group to Continued Growth

Thomas Plant Hire is much more than the name suggests. It has its roots stretching back to 1998 when Managing Director, Wyn Thomas, established a contracting business in North Wales to specialise in civil engineering and groundworks; he had no idea that almost a quarter of a century later he would be heading up what is arguably one of the country’s fastest growing group of companies. 36

Over the last six years, and supported by an ambitious, experienced management team, the Thomas Group of companies, headquartered at Holywell in Wales, has seen significant expansion, with turnover growing by around 30% year on year. Apart from plant hire, there are seven other divisions making up the Thomas Group, with growth achieved organically and by way of strategic acquisitions and there are more in the pipeline in the year ahead. There are over 4,000 machines in the hire fleet, including telehandlers, 1.5 tonne to 50 tonne excavators, one tonne to 30 tonne dumpers and 72 dozers -with another 20 on order for next year - telehandlers, many being deployed in the group’s various businesses. “We have invested around £50m in new plant and machinery over the past year, and we will probably invest the same amount in the year ahead,” says the group’s Head of Business Development Ian McMillan, who has 22 years of experience in the hire sector, the last five of them with Thomas Plant Hire. “If you don’t invest in your business, your revenue – and your profits – won’t grow,” he says. “Because we operate under the Thomas Plant Hire banner, people often have a misconception that that is all we do, but we are far more than a family-owned plant hire company; today as the Thomas Group we have been working hard in recent times to build our brand.”

We have invested around £50m in new plant and machinery over the past year, and we will probably invest the same amount in the year ahead.

Going back to the very beginning, as we mentioned, the group’s Managing Director, Wyn Thomas, started off as a contractor offering civil engineering services and as he invested in his fleet of plant and machinery he spotted an opportunity to hire some of it when it wasn’t needed, and so was born Thomas Plant Hire. With staff having a combined experience of around 70 years, its hire desks are one of the most experienced in the business, offering customers friendly, informed advice and making sure the right plant is in the right place at the right time and at the very best price. All plant and machinery that leaves the hire depots are fully serviced in the company’s own well-equipped workshops to ensure customers are getting only the very best. With a large fleet of low-loaders, it can deliver and collect any size of plant and machinery and it operates an extensive mobile engineer support network covering the whole of the UK, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure customers are back up and running as quickly as possible.

Thomas Contracting

Meanwhile, the contracting division, headed up now by General Manager Joe Clarke, is still going strong and growing, with 25 ‘live’ projects on the go. Over the years long term relationships have been forged with a wide range of major house building and other construction industry clients. Recognised as one of the largest and most successful groundwork companies in North Wales, it employs over 200 highly skilled staff – many of whom have been with the company since its early days. It operates an extensive fleet of vehicles and machinery, supplied by the hire side of the group. One of its flagship contracts over the last 2 years involved work on Liverpool’s Anfield football ground which is being extended to accommodate an extra 7,000 fans. The multimillion pound project will see an expansion of the Anfield Road End stand and the re-routing of the original road to cope with that additional traffic.

Thomas Cabins

Key to the overall success and growth of the group has been diversification. “We don’t believe in putting all our eggs in one basket,” says Ian, “which is why we continue to invest in new businesses, the latest being Thomas Cabin offering site accommodation, storage and welfare units.” It was acquired earlier this year, and with Darren Hassell at the helm it has some 2,000 units for long or short term hire throughout the UK.

OnGrade MC

Another fast-developing arm of the Thomas Group is Ongrade MC, offering sales, hire, service and training for Intelligent GPS machine control systems from leading brands such as Trimble Earthworks, Leica and Topcon; On-grade is also a dealer for X-watch safety systems and has recently began installing virtual wall systems developed by X-watch in partnership with Leica. With over 300 kits out on hire, supported by a team of eleven fully trained and qualified fitters, a fleet of service and support vans on the road, together with technical back-up, Ongrade MC has become one of the biggest GPS Machine Control Hire companies in the country since being launched just over four years ago, tripling turnover and recently introducing drone surveys throughout the UK.

SOS Hose Services

Also expanding rapidly is SOS Hose Services, established in 1992 and acquired five years ago. Covering the North of England and North Wales, it is based at Deeside in Flintshire and specialises in all types of hoses and hydraulics to customers in the construction, transport and manufacturing sectors. It offers a 24-hour on-site service, while its trade counter is always stocked with hydraulic hoses, hydraulic fittings and accessories, in addition to piping for refrigeration units, oil refineries and other sectors, all manufactured to the highest international standards. It also offers national coverage through a carefully selected network of companies.

Thomas Tool Hire

Thomas Tool Hire Ltd is also based at Deeside, with depots in Bolton and Bangor in Wales, offering small tool hire, sales and repairs. With over 40 years’ experience within the tool hire industry, this is a very progressive hire company regularly bringing in new and innovative kit that includes battery operated plate compactors, trench rammers and hybrid mini and micro diggers. It has over 2,000 items for hire and also provides other associated services including inspection, maintenance and repair of small plant tools.

We are planning to establish new depots in north London, and in the North East of England to broaden our customer reach even further

Manton Forklifts

The Thomas Group also owns Manton Forklifts, a main dealer for Doosan forklifts which was acquired in 2019. In the last year it has doubled its turnover and has added a range of diesel and electric powered access equipment such as booms and scissor lifts.

Thomas Attachments

Thomas Attachments offers customers in the construction industry a wide range of machine attachments, such as selector grabs and breakers, for hire or sale; it is another rapidly growing part of the Group.

Going Forward

It is certainly not standing still. With a centralised service department in Shropshire, 11 depots located around the country supported by a team of mechanics and service engineers, together with a 30 strong team of field engineers and a strong, proactive sales force out on the road, it has ambitious plans for 2024. “We are planning to establish new depots in north London, and in the North East of England to broaden our customer reach even further,” says Ian, “and we will also be opening purpose built offices in Birmingham for Ongrade MC which currently operates out of our Birmingham plant hire yard.” With the recent acquisition off Mulholland Plant Services, by Thomas Plant Hire, Thomas Plant Hire now has a new depot in Polbeth, West Calder. The new business, which will operate under the Thomas Plant Hire brand, will be aiming to cover the greater Scotland area, as well across the borders into the North of England. Now one of 11 operating depots, covering the entire UK, Thomas Plant Hire will continue to offer the exemplary service and quality of plant and machinery that the business has become known for.

Last year, as part of its activities to raise the profile of the Thomas Group brand, the company attended as many as 10 different shows and exhibitions across the country, taking stands at two Welsh Construction Shows, at the CPA Annual Conference and in early 2024 will be exhibiting at the UK infrastructure show at the NEC. “While it is difficult to quantify any return on our investment in these shows, they do allow us to get in front of potential customers to promote our brand and correct any misconceptions people may have had about the Thomas Group of companies. “Going forward, we have a strong, fully focused and motivated team around us who demonstrate at all times a ‘can do’ attitude on behalf of our customers, and, of course, we will be looking to make more strategic acquisitions as we continue to build and grow the Thomas Group.” Thomas Plant Hire also do a tremendous amount of charity work. One of the ways in which Thomas Plant Hire supports charity is through fundraising events, most recently with the Joseph Smile Children’s charity. The company has organised various events, including charity walks, sponsored bike rides, and golf days, to help raise money for the charity. In addition to these events, Thomas Plant Hire has recently created a one-off vinyl wrapped excavator. The excavator, which features the charity’s logo and branding, will be used on various construction sites across the UK to raise awareness of the charity’s work and generate much-needed funds. The Volvo EC140 excavator is a unique addition to the charity’s fundraising efforts. The excavator will serve as a reminder of the important work that the charity does, helping to raise awareness of the challenges that families with sick children face on a daily basis. The hope is that the excavator will capture the attention of the public and encourage them to donate to the charity, generating much-needed funds. Thomas Plant Hire’s charity wrapped excavator is just one example of their commitment to giving back to the community. The company believes in making a positive impact on the lives of others, and their support of the Joseph Smile Children’s Charity is a testament to this belief. By partnering with charities like the Joseph Smile Children’s Charity, Thomas Group is setting an example for other businesses to follow, inspiring them to support worthy causes in their local area.

Eight voices. Eight Stories. One Goal. When you think of a construction worker, what do you picture? Is it a guy? Makes sense. It’s usually a guy, isn’t it? The thing is, in 2024, we can’t continue with this bias. It’s damaging. The last 5-10 years have seen a real push to highlight the great strides women are making in construction, with awards being set up, social media influencers using their platforms to shout about the issues, and TV personalities championing women in the industry. But what is it actually like as a woman in what is still considered a man’s world? Our editor, Rebecca Phillips, is utterly thrilled to have brought together eight women who have paved the way for so many others in their pioneering work in construction. They take us through their ups and downs and detail exactly why they have stuck around in an industry whose workforce retention is known to be low. United, these women are proud to present one common cause: Together, we can change the construction world for the better.

Katie Kelleher CPA Technical & Development Officer Top 100 Women in Construction I started on the lifting technician apprenticeship in October 2014. Previous to this I had been to University studying English Literature for 2 years then fell into sales, eventually after working in mobile phone shops, advertising sales, car sales, I ended up in recruitment. I was working on a trades and labour desk, finding work for painters, plasters, plumbers, brick layers, you name it. And I wondered if could I work in construction? Ok I only had one woman on my books a painter, and it was really hard trying to get her a start, so I am not sure why I believed I might be able to do it but it was worth a shot. I chanced my arm, and sent my CV out to a few places. At the time I had no experience, I didn’t have any tickets, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I just thought I would see what happens. I got a phone call one day when I was driving home from work, it was Laing O’Rourke they received my CV and asked ‘How do you feel about being a crane operator, we have a lifting technician apprenticeship starting?’

PLANT PLANET

The question caught me by surprise and I wasn’t sure what I thought about it, being a crane operator – it wasn’t an occupation I had ever thought about and I had to question what I knew, I honestly never thought about women as crane operators. I decided to go to the interview, interviewees were young men in suits, and I’m there in my little dress fresh from the office. During my interview and testing I never saw another woman, I felt very out of my depth. A week later I got a phone call, and they offered me the job. Me being me, the first thing I asked: ‘Is this because I was the only woman there?’ I was assured it wasn’t. I was told I showed really good leadership skills and that I could go far. I was handed an opportunity to change my life, learn new skills, earn more money and I would either be really good at it or really bad at it but if I didn’t try I would never know. Thankfully it was the one thing in my whole life I was actually really good at, there is a real skill to operating well.

Walking on to site for the first time though? Hor-rendous! Everyone was staring. Then instead of going to my induction I somehow ended up crashing the staff briefing. Even when I was on the crane everyone was asking me team ‘what’s that woman like in a crane, is she any good?’ If I was a bloke, no one would’ve asked. For months, I just felt a massive pressure, I had to turn up and be really good and make no mistakes. The site was really tight. You go from learning in a field in the middle of Norfolk to operating in central London in Tottenham Court Road. For a while, I was convinced I was going to accidentally demolish a Tesco. I was put forward for a lot of onsite meet and greets. People would come to look at these sites because they’re big government projects, and I was often asked to talk to them. One of the other apprentices said, ‘why are they always going for you?’ And I replied, ‘because I actually have the ability talk to people mate.’ I like to think my years of sales and retail gave me an ability to be customer (client) facing, I mean I know being a female operator at this time might have been a novelty also. Nowadays, there are more women in construction, but really, it’s still very much a boys’ club. The end numbers haven’t changed much in over 20 years. The first thought Initially, in my mind, we just need more women, let’s do that, brilliant. But that’s not where our efforts need to be.

We can push as many women into this industry as we want, but unless we fix the fundamentals we’re never going to keep them. Might get loads more, but if we are not able to keep them there is no point. It’s small things such as PPE. It doesn’t seem like a lot but actually having something that fits correctly and that is fit for purpose is essential. During my time I have heard plenty of stories one was about an email chain from a group of women who were talking about how to not go to the toilet, essentially dehydrating themselves because they didn’t want to use the toilet, its shocking but not surprising.

I remember talking to a tower crane operator, and she was saying that she’s worried after a shift coming down the crane, because she’s not sure who’ll be waiting at the bottom for her. Then there’s the big scale things and some of the things I read while moderating the Woman On the Tools group that are absolutely shocking. I’m honestly lucky that I’ve never had terrible experiences and I think that comes from working on big tier one government projects, things are just less acceptable and the projects strive to do better. Construction also struggles when it comes to the needs of the workforce and workforce flexibility. I remember there was one Saturday, and I said to the supervisor ‘I can’t do this Saturday, can you get cover?’ He looks me dead in the eye, and he went ‘if you can’t work this Saturday, we might have to think about replacing you.’ There is an expectation that you should always be there regardless. Things on site don’t stop; things keep moving. And more often than not, the projects come above people, which is where we’re really letting our workforce down. If even the small things that can’t be changed, labour retention isn’t going to happen for anyone, let alone for women who are still breaking their way into the industry. And it has to be for everyone. It has to be open, and it has to be in the policy. We need to invite everyone to the table to tackle any kind of skills shortage, we have to be more flexible and understanding in our approach. Then and only then can we make the essential changes the industry desperately needs.

Kelly Cartwright Founder of Core Recruiter

Top 100 Women in Construction and Young Entrepreneur of the Year

Honestly, I actually fell into the world of construction. When I was 17 and I was doing my A levels, and had a job lined up to go to advertising market, but I wanted money to fund the fun I was having. I was 17 after all! I landed a job in a recruitment business, and then just a complete recruitment buzz. I ended up working for a couple of large national recruitment agencies, which I truly loved. What I didn’t love though, was the red tape of working for a national company. That’s when I struck out on my own. I think my entrepreneurial spirit comes from my parents. They’ve always had their own business, so I was exposed to both the good times and the bad. That exposure was really important because I saw how brave they were, and it inspired me to emulate them. Now, if someone says, ‘you can’t do that’, I know immediately that I can prove them wrong. I think that’s the fuel because I’ve had so much of it over the years. I was 23, starting out as a female in a male dominated industry. But I believed in myself, and I still do.

women in construction

feature

PLANT PLANET

But even now, I still come up against it. On many occasions when my husband accompanies me to awards, the bloke we were beside speaks to my husband first and says, ‘So what you up for?’ Even small things like his tie matching with my outfit, everyone assumes I’m matching him. No, he’s matching me; this is my award. It really was an honour to win Young Entrepreneur of the Year. But I’ll be honest, the impostor syndrome was just insane. There were so many big names in a room of 1500 people! I sent a video to the girls showing them just how insane it was! Me? A little recruiter? As well as Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction Two Years running. See, the sector is male dominated, and unfortunately, we’re not attracting many women into it. So, I think their mission is to try and highlight the women in the industry in order to pull in more women. And I’m so proud to be a part of that. But again, everyone says to me, “you’ve had a few awards now, you must be used to it!” I promise you, I’m absolutely not. Of course I want to win. Who doesn’t? But I never expect it and I’m always honoured. Some settings, I feel the industry changing to become less sexist, and then some things happen, like the awards, and I worry it’s not getting anywhere. The good thing is that there are a lot more people calling out the inherent sexism, especially on social media. And it’s not just women. I’m very active on social media and I have a lot of really supportive male allies. Unfortunately, there are still lots of old school guys thinking that us women are all trying to steal their jobs when, of course, we’re not. We’re trying to make it more inclusive. That, and the industry as a whole is struggling for labour, so why not tap into a whole other market of females? Sadly, so many people are just so resistant to change in any respect. Being surrounded by the right people that champion each other makes all the difference, both on socials and in the workplace. There’s a lot of people in our industry that only support one another at face value, and it’s not enough. Also, if you are out doing amazing things, post about it! Perhaps it comes across as cringe, but it demonstrates a get up and go attitude. It also helps to highlight what opportunities there are out there, because when you say construction, people instantly think it’s just trade. It’s not all brick laying outside in the freezing cold. There are training opportunities, career advancement, back office jobs, the need for architects. People don’t think of what else that goes behind the scenes, or the variety of people needed for them.

There are general issues that surround the construction industry anyway. Just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean you’re not going be experiencing those ones as well. Starting my own business was certainly daunting, as it would be for anyone; being a woman just added another challenge on top. Even now, I still get challenged about being fit for the job. I cold called a construction site the other week and the guy was immediately standoffish, dictating what he wanted as though I had no clue what he was talking about. So, calmly and politely, I explain my understanding of the infrastructure before I deep dived into it bit more. Instantly he changed. I started using the ‘right’ terminology and it was as though it clicked in his mind ‘oh so she does know what she’s talking about!’ Before that, I was nothing more than a stereotype to him. I don’t think he’d have been the same if I was a man. I get it to an extent. Most people think recruiters are all money hungry and that women wouldn’t know the ins and outs of construction. But I really do care and I really love helping the people that work with us. And that’s what I always prove in the end. I’m a bit of a believer in karma. You do a good deed and it comes back around. Now looking back like that was a massive achievement for me. For me, the most heart warming part of my job is the people’s lives you help. Perhaps it sounds corny. I don’t care. I’ve had ex offenders that no one’s given an opportunity who thrive in their career. I’ve had a young lady who was told she’d never make it in construction, and now she’s killing it! The reward inside in this job is the people you touch; the difference you make. I am proud of how far I’ve come, both as a business women and within the construction industry. I am ready to keep pushing forward though, there is so much more too… So watch this space!

Lana Edwards

Heavy Plant Operator and Social Media Influencer (tracklass1)

Top 100 Women in Construction and Number 1 Woman in Construction in Wales My family’s business has always been predominately in Agriculture along with a bit of plant hire until my father retired. From the age of 8, I was driving tractors using wooden blocks on the pedals so I could reach them and then off I would go. It’s always been a way of life. Been part of a family business I learnt all aspects of the business including repairing machinery, normally out in the fields. If we needed to take an engine out to fix it, then that’s what we did. I became very proficient in the use of the welder; those abilities got us out of many a hole. The ability to repair machinery has always been there for me. I think a lot of that has to do with being raised on the idea ‘why not if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything.’ I think a huge example of that was when some 20 years ago, my Dad came to me with a set of plans for my parents’ retirement house and literally said ‘if you build it, we’ll move into it.’ So that was exactly what I did, I built a 3 bedroom house. Well “WHY NOT” ...and yes they moved into it.

women in construction

The only tradie I needed to bring in was an electrician, everything else I did myself. Learnt so much on this project doing it in what spare time I had. On the back of that house build I was asked to renovate a cow shed into another house which I completed, again the only trades I had in was a sparky and gas fitter. What I’m trying to say is, it doesn’t matter who you are, or what gender. If you turn your mind to something, no matter what it is, you can do anything! I’ve had many people comment on my posts saying that I’m an inspiration for women in construction. Honestly I’m not. I don’t see myself that way. I’m just doing the job I love, I’m just me doing my job to the best of my ability. I have absolutely nothing to prove to anyone. I was asked about my thoughts on Women in Construction and some of the more risqué posts that can be seen on social media. Now that’s a difficult one. Women have fought long and hard for independence and freedoms. I think myself being n an early 1960’s girl, that maybe the message of “let our abilities do the talking” is getting diluted. I take my hat off to all the women who work in construction; posting our work achievements on the social’s certainly opens the way for some keyboard warriors to post what verges on lewd and very unwanted comments. Social media is very much a double edged sword I suppose. I would never do Facebook as I may as well put a literal target on my back. I definitely think ‘Women in Construction’ needs to be talked about. Gender shouldn’t come into it but unfortunately it does. Women often have to prove themselves and their skills where as men and their skills are more readily accepted by our male counterparts. We should be able to let our work speak for itself and hopefully one day it will be the normal for Women to be operating heavy plant.

BBC The Apprentice Finalist 2017, Owner of Design and Build UK, Women in Construction Awards and Hub, Vantage Utility Connections Holdings, Property Ninjas I ended up in construction completely by accident. I was taking a year out from university where I was studying Religion and Special Needs, so absolutely nothing to do with construction. My dad started to get worried I was partying too much - despite that just being student life – and pushed me to go and get a job. There were two options: Gregg’s or a construction magazine working in sales. I was 19: you wouldn’t catch me in a blue hair net handing out pasties. So, construction magazine it was. I’d grown up in and around the industry. All my brothers are joiners, Dad’s an engineer, and Mum’s a Sales Agent. So, I was familiar with it, but that was my first experience of working in it. And honestly, I loved it! I was really good at it and was making really good money, so I decided to quit teaching and do it full time. I hit a glass ceiling when I was about 24-25. I should definitely have had a promotion, but apparently an older man was required for the job. There was no

women in construction

way for me to suddenly become male or old, so that was that. Naturally, I was absolutely furious. Not only that, but I was pregnant at the time, so I had to stay put for the time being. They brought in this older man to be sales manager, and to rub salt in the wound, they asked me to train him. I don’t’ even think they realised the bias they hired with; they pictured a sales manager and saw a man. He was a nice guy, but it still wasn’t fair that happened to me. When my son was around 8 months, I’d had enough, and struck out on my own to start my own magazine, Design and Build. And it went so well for the first few years that I started to invest in other businesses, including Vantage Utility Connections. But everything was always centred around construction. After The Apprentice, I was flooded with tens of thousands of predominantly women sending me things just like messages of good will and thanks for representing women in construction. That’s when it all started to shine a light on the fact that I am actually a woman in construction. Previously, I was just ‘in construction’. I didn’t really understand what the difference was. But these women started telling me about their experience in the industry, why they left the industry, and asking me advice. Some of it was hitting glass ceilings just like me, but two of the women told me that they had been sexually assaulted at work. That’s when I knew I absolutely had to do something. So, Women in Construction Hub started in 2017, so we could highlight their stories and give women a platform to discuss their issues. After the pandemic, we got back to in person interactions and launched the Women in Construction Awards. Genuinely, we have to change the way that the industry is looking at this. I tell them women stories. We’ve created legacy programs. We’ve created training courses.

That’s when it all started to shine a light on the fact that I am actually a woman in construction. Previously, I was just ‘in construction’. I didn’t really understand what the difference was. We’ve got women in construction jobs. It’s a place for women to network and discuss the business, or talk about menopause, maternity leave, all the different conversations that you typically have on a construction side. My passion truly came from other people’s stories and wanting to help. We try to do as much free of charge as we possibly can, so it’s successful for everybody and allows everybody the opportunity to network that men inherently just seem to have in construction. My hope is to be able to create the environment where women feel equal. I don’t ever expect to get 50% women on the tools in construction, because there just isn’t a desirable occupation for lots of women out there, which is understandable. But right now, there is less than 2% currently, and that’s because so many women commonly can’t stay. So many young girls don’t even know that it’s an option for them when leaving college. And so, my plan is to get us to 30% of women in construction and at least 10% of women on the tools by 2030.

People have been dangling the carrot for years; many women have been in this industry for over 50 years and have been having this conversation for that entire time. Only now are we seeing minor progress. I don’t want to wait another 50 years to make these great strides. Both the government and the private sector need to start taking proper responsibility and look at the supply chain and contract framework, and make sure that everyone is being championed along the way. And that isn’t just for women; it’s all underrepresented minorities. But I also mean for the men working within the organisations. What are they doing to look at mental health? In 2022, 507 men in construction took their own lives and I think it was that same year that 9 people died from health and safety issues. The industry is not regulated enough, and the people in it are suffering. It’s an industry that suffers some of the worst divorce rates, suicide rates, and mental health rates in the country… it is time that things changed. I genuinely believe that bringing more women into these environments is going to have a positive effect on it all. By nature, women see things differently; I think they inherently check in on people more. It’s important that we look at all of the benefits of having women in the construction world. This isn’t about burning your bra and making everything completely equal. Women and men are inherently different and are better at different things. I doubt it will ever be 50/50 on the tools, but there are so many different roles within construction, and we need diversity at every level. We need all these different demographics, because everyone thinks differently; they see problems that all of you in one category would not see. The reason that our homes started changing from having kitchens in the back of the house, separated from everything, is because female designers started to be brought into architecture. They pointed out that women want to be able to see the kids while they prepare food. And that’s how we got open plan living spaces, because women had an entirely different perspective and need. So many things, even to this day, are still only designed for men, and I’m not simply talking about construction PPE. Look at car seats and seat belts. 20 years ago, when they were first properly designed, it was all based on the average male height, size and build. So now, when a woman is in a car accident, she is 70 % more likely to die than a man. And that’s just women, it doesn’t even account for children who are in boosters. Car manufacturers know this. It’s proven it’s factually correct, and they are not changing it because it’s too much money. Even in these ‘typical female cars’, they won’t do it. Still, to this day, if we do not have women on these boards making these decisions, they won’t happen. This is not just about, ‘oh, we want more money and to be equal’. This is health and safety. This is people’s lives. It is actually imperative that we start addressing diversity in this industry. We’re building people’s livelihood, people’s offices, people’s hospitals. Women have to be part of this journey as well. You have to have women’s thoughts. We’re 51 % of the population, listen to us!

Jo stamp Regional Lifting Manager – North Sunbelt Rentals My journey in the construction industry began 35 years ago with a role in lifting hear hire. It was a time of learning and growth, and I embraced every opportunity. I was very fortunate to be supported in my career and being promoted into a management role at 25 years old, a significant milestone in my career. This early recognition fuelled my determination to support others and make an impact within the construction industry. Navigating the industry as a woman can be both a challenging and rewarding experience. Throughout my long career in this field, I have witnessed significant changes, with more women making their mark. Despite the challenges, I have been fortunate to have a supportive network of colleagues and mentors who have championed my growth and development to reach the position as Regional Lifting Manager - North. As a result, I am committed to paying it forward and supporting others in the industry.

Josie Field

Head of Plant Attachments – South Sunbelt Rentals

Since a young age, both of my parents have worked in the construction industry, and my mum continues to work in it to this day, so I was exposed to the industry from a young age. My first job in the industry was at the Olympic Stadium construction project, which was meant to be a temporary position while I was in college however, here I am, 15 years later, still working in the construction industry. Throughout my career, I have held a diverse range of positions in the industry, from a hire manager and progressing to my current role as head of plant attachments in Sunbelt Rentals, the UK’s largest rental provider. This has allowed me to gain extensive experience and knowledge of the industry as a whole. There certainly are unique challenges when it comes to being a woman in the industry, however I’m privileged to work alongside some incredibly strong women and we are continually making strides to break gender stereotypes, contribute diverse perspectives to the industry and to see more women progress into influential roles. Although it may not always be easy, we’re determined to make a lasting impact and create a more inclusive construction industry.

Sunbelt Rentals is the UK’s largest equipment rental company with over 200 service centres nationwide.

With more than 4,000 employees and a customer base of over 35,000 across various industries including construction, events, facilities management, government and film and TV sectors. Our team is committed to making the impossible possible and the unthinkable doable. Turning what if into what is.

Michelle Letherby Director of Heavy Jobs heavy jobs I’m not in a hard hat but more the behind-the-scenes support ensuring things run smoothly. In the construction industry, my journey revolves around collaboration, providing integral support services. As a woman in this dynamic field, assumptions occasionally surface that familiarity with construction intricacies is beyond my purview. Yet, these assumptions quickly disappear as genuine conversations unfold, revealing my depth of understanding and expertise. Challenges often stem from initial perceptions. There’s an occasional surprise, a realisation, that I possess a profound understanding of the industry and comprehend the nuances of the roles we support. Once these conversations happen, a bridge of trust forms, leading to meaningful engagements where our support services prove invaluable. To address these challenges, fostering mentorship programs and providing platforms for women to showcase their expertise are crucial steps. Increasing visibility of successful women in construction, sharing their stories, and highlighting achievements contribute to a more inclusive narrative. Coupled with educational initiatives encouraging girls to explore careers in construction-related fields. Thankfully, positive transformations are happening in the construction industry. Organisations recognise the value of diverse perspectives, understanding that gender should never be a barrier to meaningful contribution. As a result, more opportunities are opening up, creating a more inclusive environment where talent and skills are celebrated above all. Let’s keep sharing stories, challenging stereotypes, and ensuring every girl out there knows she can own it in construction. Here’s to breaking ground and breaking norms!

Allison Sedgwick Operational Marketing Manager mecalac I am working for my third B2B manufacturer, a decision I took almost 25 years ago. The thought never entered my mind whether this would be a journey into a male dominated sector or if I was always going to be the only female in the room, I had been given the job and therefore that told me my employer just saw me as the best person for the job. As such I never considered there would be any barriers to entry either. But you do have to have an air of confidence and conviction to prove that it is women’s work, and that yes you do know what a diesel particulate filter is. I am happy being the only women in the room (or muddy field) most of the time as I am most content when in controlling and organising mode and my male colleagues like me to organise them. As a woman I believe we are also very aware of recognising people’s well-being and happy to talk about problems, whereas more often than not men do not recognise when another man is feeling down at work. Women are recognising that the world of construction is an interesting and innovative place and only when I get to replace the PPE for heels and a dress am I reminded there is anything different about me compared to my male colleagues… they always get to wear flat shoes!

Rebecca Phillips Editor of Plant Planet Magazine It’s safe to say that women’s journey into the world of construction has been an interesting one and is still very much in its early stages. I had my own, small foray in the world of construction prior to writing this magazine, and there were as many highs as there were lows. For a few years, I was a little forklift driver in a tiny weeny tile shop warehouse. Among my copious duties (which my second manager there insisted was making tea and flirting with customers; no, I’m not joking) I was in charge of tiling all the displays, manual handling and dealing with all the tradies. To say I got an eclectic mix of reactions was an understatement. I was told regularly by so many customers that “a woman shouldn’t be doing all that lifting” or to “leave it to the men, darling.” I had many tell me that I should “use my womanly wiles to get better sales” and to “stop being so annoyed” when I got a casual pat on the behind. “It’s a compliment!” Given that this was only 4-5 years ago, it’s atrocious behaviour, and definitely a reason for me to quit and leave it all behind. With workforce retention as worrisome as it is, incidences such as this do demonstrate particularly for women, why they don’t want to stick around. That being said, I have also made friends for life with the people I met there. There were so many male allies who were nothing but supportive as well as willing to teach me what it took to excel. Having said that, don’t ask my bestie Tom how good I am on the forklift… the dent in his van would hint that I made the right choice in laying down my hard hat and turning to writing instead. Yet, there was always that strange pull to the construction world. Despite writing being my passion, I absolutely jumped at the opportunity to stay involved in the construction industry in some form or another. Except this time, it’s on my terms. Now, I can use my skills and voice to highlight the key issues in the plant industry. There is definitely still more work that needs to be done for people in plant, not just women. But perhaps if we all band together and continue to work towards a collective goal of inclusivity, we might just get there quicker than expected.

Women in Construction – helping to overcome the barriers to entry It’s no secret that the construction industry has traditionally been male dominated, unfortunately leading to stereotypes and stigmas surrounding women in this field. These biases can create barriers for women seeking to pursue careers in construction.

Inclusivity and diversity are at the heart of the company’s commitment to recruitment and training

Flannery is passionate about combating these stigmas and has developed the skills bootcamps and operator skills hub training programs to encourage everyone to take an interest in construction, with the aim of pursuing a career in the industry. Inclusivity and diversity are at the heart of the company’s commitment to recruitment and training, including for machine operator roles. We consistently share content to this effect across all our communications channels as a means to generate awareness of the opportunities available to everyone. Flannery’s Managing Director, Patrick Flannery, points out, “The construction industry is changing rapidly and the more people we can train to benefit from the advances in digital machine control and site safety the better. Women have traditionally been in the minority where machine operators are concerned but our apprenticeship and training programs are open to everyone. We’re keen to show women how accessible a career in construction is to them. “We are determined to ensure that we provide a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for our people and clients. We work hard to offer an environment free from discrimination, harassment, and violence. We recognise that the industry is facing significant skills shortages, and it is paramount that we continue to widen the talent pool and attract and retain individuals from different backgrounds, ethnicities (BAME), genders, sexualities, cultures etc. To achieve diversity and equality, we have fostered a culture of inclusion, understanding and appreciation of differences.”

Flannery heavily invests in skills and development across the workforce. From new operator training through to senior management training, they continually look to upskill their people to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to carry out their jobs safely and efficiently. This commitment is led from the top down. The Flannery approach to training is driven by a company-wide ambition to be the best and lead the plant hire industry with its innovative approach and adoption of new technology. Their strong focus on upskilling and development drives the business’s claim to having the best operators who are equipped to deal with the demands of the modern construction site.

Flannery and Balfour Beatty dedicated Women in Construction Events Flannery has organised information events alongside Balfour Beatty at the dedicated Operator Skills Hub in Birmingham that are specifically designed to connect with women in construction. In 2022 they celebrated International Women’s Day by hosting a Women in Construction careers event. The aim of the day was to provide participants with a realistic experience of a day in the life of a construction worker and knowledge about the benefits of a career in the industry. At the event attendees were taken through the basic site safety standards and how to use PPE to stay protected. There was a brief introduction to the apprenticeship program, displaying how Flannery can really help build confidence and skills with crucial training and support at every step of the way. The candidates were educated on the monetary benefits of the apprenticeship program, explaining how participants can ‘earn while they learn’ because they will be site-ready very early on

in the course. The event proved a major success and provided a group of between 30 and 60 women of all ages the chance to experience hands on what it’s like to drive a piece of heavy plant, and how to operate it using the latest digital technology. The success of the event further led Flannery and Balfour Beatty to continue promoting inclusivity and diversity in construction, with a particular focus on women in construction.

To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day and to raise awareness of Flannery and Balfour Beatty’s commitment to closing the skills gap in construction, Flannery Plant Hire is hosting another free Women in Construction event on the 9th of March 2024 at the Operator Skills Hub in Birmingham – totally targeted at women interested in becoming a machine operator.

Women at Flannery Plant Hire real life stories Danielle Taylor

From finance to “Plant Operative of the Year” apprentice “I spoke to a friend who had been through the scheme and seen Flannery were encouraging more women into the industry. It was after looking into the company and from what my friend had said I decided it was a company I’d like to work for. “I took a dramatic shift from working in a bank to working in construction. I wanted to escape the office 9-5, and work in the outdoors. I’m hands-on and place a huge focus on health and safety. I hope one day I will progress into a senior plant role. I’m currently operating a D6 Dozer. This is by far my favourite machine. I expected some resistance, as there were definitely some preconceived perceptions that working on site was a man’s role. That couldn’t be further from the truth”. Danielle followed her heart, and it changed her life completely. Once a former auditor in a bank to the winner of a CPA Stars of the Future Plant Operative of the Year Award. “I hadn’t driven machines before coming to college, in the end (excavators) were the most fun to drive and I’m looking forward to improving in the future”. Danielle is still excelling in her career with Flannery and is now a CPCS card holder for the following plant: Ride on roller, Telescopic handler, Articulated dump truck, Tracked 360 and Crawler tractor dozer.

I started as an apprentice on a roller, working on the A14 project in Cambridge and was quickly noticed for my eye for detail and strong focus on health and safety. Flannery invested in my future and supported me through my NEBOSH H&S in Construction. I am now a fully qualified Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor at Skanska. “To any ladies out there who are tempted to start a career in construction plant, I would say: DO IT!” Adrienne turned her life around, once an employee at a supermarket unsure where her career path would lead, she decided to take the step and followed her passion in Construction. Adrienne Completed three years as a Plant Operator with Flannery and continued to pursue her passions to ultimately become a fully qualified Health and Wellbeing Advisor in the industry.

From dreams of being a chef to falling for a career in construction

this has been the perfect choice of career for me

Samantha Whitehead From warehouse to HS2

“I am a hands-on person and started my career in a warehouse as a stock controller, but I was always determined to grow my career in the construction industry. I’ve worked on a variety of sites, including the M4. I’m now on HS2 and embracing the opportunity to be part of such a high-profile project. I get constant support from my managers. “When I first started out, I was nervous, but the managers on-site and the rest of the team have been so supportive and helped me grow my confidence.

“For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a chef! But after landing my first role as an office junior in a construction firm, I instantly fell in love with the industry. When I joined the Flannery team, they immediately recognised my passion and put me on the first ever Hire Controller Trailblazer. I am a great communicator, thrive on pressure and enjoy liaising with clients, so this has been the perfect choice of career for me. “The Hire Controller Trailblazer is a great choice for those working behind the scenes in construction plant, but who still want to be a major cog in the wheel! “I found that the apprenticeship really helped me on my general knowledge of the plant hire industry, learning the different aspects of the business and how each department works together to provide our customers with a topclass service. Flannery is the number one plant hire firm in the UK, and I wanted to train with the best.”

My end goal is to stay in construction and develop my operator skills further. The money and variety of works keeps me motivated! “Before joining Flannery, I was a logistics supervisor on a construction site. I thoroughly enjoyed my role but felt I wanted to have my own trade and skills that I could develop and carve out a career for life. I chose Flannery because they have an amazing apprenticeship scheme. They are a very successful company, and it is evident that they are keen to develop their people and build their relationships with their customer base. I am confident that I have chosen the best company to progress me through my journey and so far, I couldn’t be happier.”

Chloe Jones

Superstar Apprentice Chloe Jones is one of the standout apprentices at Flannery. Chloe has excelled through their apprenticeship since joining at 21 years old. Since the day Chloe joined the program, she was incredibly passionate about her career and has continued to develop her skills to the best of her ability to this day. Now 24, Chloe’s talent has been recognised across the industry. She has exceeded the typical expectations for such a young apprentice and has been nominated and won multiple industry awards. It seems the sky is the limit for Chloe as she appears as driven as ever, always keen to learn and further develop her skills. In her own words: “My Dad has worked with machinery his entire life and would always talk about the different jobs that he would work on and the different machinery he would operate. Initially I wanted to be a veterinary nurse and after college I was constantly in and out of jobs. Hearing my dad talk about his work encouraged me to get involved within this line of work. I finally asked him about the apprenticeship and said I wanted to join. My Dad has been with Flannery for over 10 years and had been trying to get me to join for years. When I finally said yes, he has been a huge support for me, along with the rest of my family. “I haven’t looked back since joining Flannery. There are so many skills that I’ve learnt so far, such as how to communicate across different areas of the business and how to work well in a team. There is often a fear of isolation associated with construction work, however, I have never experienced this fear as I’ve always felt part of the team at Flannery. Even though you’re often isolated in the machine, there’s still a team working around you, so we need to collaborate to ensure that everybody goes home safely to their families and that we’re doing the job to the best possible standard. “I really love working on a 360 excavator because it challenges me and gives me variety within my working day. The people that are at CITB, on the apprenticeship and within Flannery are my favourite part of the experience. I’ve never known such a supportive network and having people behind me who are helping me to succeed is great to have. I think it’s important to be able to work in a team and to have good communication with the people you are working with. “I enjoy working with all the machines but one of my favourites is the telehandler. It’s a machine that is always busy on sites which allows me to go across the site and see the various projects that are on-going. If I am in a difficult situation or have a challenge that I haven’t faced before I will always see if I can work it out. However, if I ever need help, I know that I can always ask someone from Flannery (or my dad) for advice! “I find the apprenticeship incredibly rewarding. The range of different skills and challenges that I have faced has made me become a better operator. The main goal I have set myself is just to continue to learn and to put my all into each job I work on. I cannot emphasise how strongly I recommend anyone that is contemplating a career in construction to get involved as soon possible. I am excited for what the future holds for me, and I cannot wait to continue this journey.”

Operator Skills Hub

Local employment opportunities Flannery are proud to have developed an integrated approach to working within the communities where we operate. As our company has grown, Flannery has recognised the need to drive local employment opportunities to fulfil the increasing number of vacancies in the sector. Flannery’s answer to this problem has been to deploy the Operator Skills Hub (OSH) as a national network of modern training facilities serving our communities. The OSH is a unique industry proposition offering candidates a viable entry point into the sector. The OSH has proved hugely valuable to the existing network of operators who may have struggled to secure upskilling opportunities independently. To date, more than 890 operators have passed through the OSH doors securing qualifications that will further their carriers, enhance their employability prospects and ultimately increase their net pay. As the OSH network has grown to include facilities in Iver, Buckingham, Birmingham, and Penrith with more hubs planned for opening in the next 12 months; the course offering has continued to broaden and evolve. Today the OSH partners with the Department for Education to deliver the government funded Skills Bootcamp in plant operations. This collaboration, which is unique to Flannery, has so far delivered over 550 operators whether new entrants or those upskilling with a further 1000 places secured. Each one of these learners represents either a new entrant into the construction sector or an upskilling opportunity from a trade or plant ticket onto a new category of machinery. The exciting aspect to the skills bootcamp includes a guaranteed offer of employment following successful completion of the course.

As a company we actively work to mitigate associated risks such as fatigue and isolation. The solution was to invest in the Flannery Hotel scheme. With two locations now in use, operators working on HS2 sites around the Warwickshire area can benefit from access to highquality accommodation and food at a significantly subsidised rate. With 110 rooms available, this concept not only helps with any fatigue associated with long-distance travel, but also gives a sense of community where non-local operators can gather at the end of each working day to socialise. At a time when there is a huge skills gap in the construction industry that needs filling with capable, motivated people, it is essential that we all work to alter the traditional image of working in this field. It’s a great opportunity to open up routes that welcome everyone into a career in the sector and practical solutions like apprenticeships and skills training bootcamps can go a long way to doing just that. The women who have featured in this article are shining examples of what can be achieved, and their futures are literally opening up before them. The goal is surely that one day their trailblazing leads to everyone realising they can realistically consider construction as a career, without discrimination.

it is essential that we all work to alter the traditional image of working in this field.

ight from the first phone call it was plain just what a wealth of knowledge he had to share, and I’m not ashamed to say that it intimidated me endlessly. Not only that, but given how popular he is on socials, I also worried that I’d put my foot in my mouth and offend an entire fan base to boot! How lucky then, that Kurt is quite possibly the most down to earth person I have ever had the fortune to meet. What I thought would be a formal interview became a near to 3 hour chat with a veritable treasure trove of information happily gifted to me. The moment social media is brought into the equation, red tape is immediately brought out. And it makes perfect sense. Posting anything online opens you up to not just enthusiastic fans, but also enthusiastic idiots with nothing better to do.

Kurt, on the other hand, speaks as he finds. It’s a rarity for sure, and one I was entirely grateful for. He had so many stories to tell, so much wisdom to pass on, and one very eager audience member who was all ears (and not just because they stick out a little too far; thanks a lot Dad!) So readers, come on this journey with us and deep dive into the nitty gritty of Lord Muck’s views on the plant and construction industry.

PLANT PLANET

So then, first question I’m sure everyone always asks, how did you get started in plant? Like lots of us, I’m from a farming background. I was raised on farms. But we always had diggers and earth moving equipment as well, so I’ve been around it since I was quite young. Over the years, I was drawn to the earth moving side. Used to do earth moving, demolition, construction, that sort of thing.

It was, is (and is still) swamped with more specialist sort of contracting. So, we would do wetlands and wildlife schemes. I actually had such a passion for that, because I was creating something good. Then that all came to a bit of an abrupt halt in 2010, when Cameron was elected for the austerity thing; grants and schemes just disappeared. He came in and stopped them overnight. So after that, I got involved in some highways contracts in Lincolnshire. And at that point, I’d been doing YouTube for six or seven years.

That’s when I had to make a decision. I was already having to juggle my actual work with content creation, and the YouTube work kept piling up. And more companies were asking me to do more videos. So I thought, this is the time to do it, make or break. It’s either social media or going back to earth moving. And that was it. I never looked back.

Blimey! So, did you really enjoy the social media side of things?

I’m going to level with you… I actually really don’t like social media. Or maybe it’s more that I don’t like what it’s become.

Several people in the industry have said that you get two types of social media sorts. You get those that are very hungry for the social media but don’t have a lot of experience in the job. Then you get those who’ve got a lot of experience in the job, but don’t like social media. Would you say you fall into the latter category?

I fall into my own category to be honest. When I went into social media full time, I had so much experience of doing it already, as well as all of the industry knowledge. I guess I’m fairly unique in that respect that I’ve got the experience in both fields. There are some fantastic guys out there, who are up and coming on social media that are gaining more experience in the work as they go, but I find it’s a rarity to have both sides.

What pushed you to go full time in social media?

I suppose I was in the right place, at the right time. I’ve got years of experience operating all types of machinery all over the world, especially as I worked in the oil industry for a time as well. I was traveling in North Africa, the Middle East, Europe, The States. There was so much I could talk about, and I just decided to build on that really. And yet, you don’t like social media?

It’s a bit of a contradiction, I know. Honestly, it’s because there are so many down sides. Early on, I realised that people let social media run them, and I decided I was never going to do that. But perhaps if I was careful, I could turn it around for good.

I’m in charge of my social media, and that way, I push out as much positive stuff as I can. Yes, I get swamped, but it’s one of those things that’s not going to go anywhere. It’s not going to disappear. So it’s about harnessing it and utilising it for the benefit of your audience?

Yes, exactly! It’s about using for the betterment of whatever drives you to do it. That said, it’s not an easy beast to tame. Every week that goes by, it’s growing and becoming more of a challenge, especially with AI and stuff like that. We’re at the point now where words can be put in our own mouths, or it could be purported to be from us when it’s not. Tell me about it. As a writer, AI terrifies me.

It makes sense. From my point of view, it’s a challenge for the future, but something to keep a watchful eye on. I’ll probably end up using some element of it. We all have to eventually, but hopefully in a limited capacity. I hope I don’t have to. It doesn’t have the human touch, does it?

Not at all. And that’s just it. Robots don’t have that warmth and experience that is needed in any kind of creative industry. And I think that goes back to what I’m trying to do with harnessing it. I don’t want us, and I’m talking about guys and girls in the industry, sat on social media on their breaks just taking in lousy content.

Do you think social media is isolating people in the industry?

Absolutely! Once upon a time, breaks were about getting together in the tearoom and chatting to one another. Getting to know the team. And of course it wasn’t work related. It was about the match last night or the club you went to the week before. But it was genuine human interaction. It’s so important on a worksite and we’ve lost it.

Think about it, new recruits coming on the scene aren’t communicating with those with experience like they were before. Sure, the old gruff geezer in the corner might look a bit daunting, but I bet he has so much to teach you that training alone can’t. But phones and social media put a stop to that sort of thing because everyone is just in their own world now. It doesn’t provoke conversation.

There used to be a support network amongst teammates that I’m not sure remains. Before, in those little conversations, you’d be able to see who was struggling, help them out, you know? Now? Most people are just keeping it to themselves before they go back to their cab and sit on their own for however many hours more of that day. It’s a loss of community and communication.

I’d never thought of it like that!

Face to face connection really changes things. I recently met up with someone that I’ve known online for seven years! We talk about all sorts, but it was always on the phone or texts or emails. I finally met him this September for the first time in seven years! Honestly, it was amazing.

That all started when he’d been very ill in hospital, and in a lot of pain around 2AM. He’d watch my videos again and again, and it helped him through, which is what he reached out to tell me. And we got to chatting. It was amazing knowing that my content gave him support in some way. It sounds like your platform provides the social interaction that the industry is otherwise lacking.

I’d like to think it is in some way. I think the old boys hark back to the days of chatting at the tea point. When I’m talking about a machine, it’s because I’m passionate about it. I don’t read off a sales brochure and I’m not there to sell machines. It’s conversational. I’m there to just let you know what I’m thinking, how I feel about it, how I see it, what I think is good and bad about it. One thing I’ll never do is lie to my audience. I don’t just take anything that’s given to me.

It’s got to fit my criteria. Firstly, is it a company or a manufacturer that I recognise and I respect? Secondly, do they have a product or product line that I or my viewers would find interesting? And thirdly, where most fall down, have they got a marketing team I can work with? Someone I can liaise with properly. If I feel passionate about their product, then we’re a go. If they’re just ticking a box and they’ve been told to get an influencer to shout out about their products, I’m not their man. Communication is definitely the most important thing to you, isn’t it? 100%! It’s so key to plant construction and sadly I think it’s really disappearing. Especially if we’re looking at how technology effects as a whole. You mean telematics apps and so on?

Yes. They’re infinitely useful, don’t get me wrong. But they have their limitations. They’re not going to be able to go into the finer details of a worksite like a person can. They can’t tell you not to park a digger somewhere because of recent rainfall or the fact that they have a low load coming in that afternoon.

industry corner

PLANT PLANET

It’s also a morale thing. You go home at night, you slump in that chair, you have your tea, a bath, then you’re asleep. Repeat the routine, day after day. So what is it that keeps you going back to work? Love of the job, sure. But when you know there’s a team of people there who care about you, support you, it makes you excited to get to work. It’s a work family. By the sounds of it, these apps that should help seem to be hindering instead?

Only because they’re not being used properly. Loss of personal communication on site means that the different ranks in the hierarchy aren’t likely to be communicating properly. The managers, the foremen, the operators… how are they supposed to communicate properly if it’s all done from a screen? The foreman on the worksite was the parent at work. Maybe you didn’t like them because they were strict with you, but they needed to be. And you sure as hell respected them because they didn’t come out of college as a foreman and get put in that position. They worked their way up and had been in your shoes before. They understood your point of view.

And when something came up, they were right there with you. They weren’t simply ticking boxes on a screen, they were in the thick of it. Apps should be a way of supporting the great work they’re doing. It shouldn’t be the only work they’re doing. Check-ins nowadays are just a question-and-answer exercise. “So, I’ve got a photo of you in that machine, can you sign here to say that we’ve checked you in today?” That’s it. It’s sad. We’re losing that sense of camaraderie. It sounds really isolating.

It’s a lonely bubble for an operator. It’s such a shame. I want to do more about it on the channel.

industry corner

PLANT PLANET

All the things we used to do and say, and just the people I could tell you stories about. Old guys, a lot of them dead now, who had so much to teach everyone. They can’t pass it on, but maybe I can. That’s such a wonderful way to continue their legacy!

I’m where I am today because of those sorts of people. In my mind, if someone is prepared to take the time to teach you something, just grab it with open arms. Take the opportunity. That is why I’ve travelled the world and been in different industries, and in turn done really well in them. I think people nowadays, particularly the youngsters, aren’t learning from the people that have come before them. The old timers definitely didn’t get it right first time around, so surely, they’re some of the best placed to teach you how to fix your mistakes? Or to go for better opportunities.

That’s such a shame, isn’t it?

It really is. Again, just take us back to that human element. We need trust. We need to interact with other people. We’re human beings. It’s really not rocket science, you know. Do you think that means we need to cut back on the tech we rely on?

No, not at all. Embrace it, absolutely. But know it’s limitations.

Companies are trying to replace skilled workers with technology, and from a cost point of view I can see why they think that would be better. But it’s limited in the way a skilled worker isn’t. Why not, instead, use that technology to aid the operator that has such a vast knowledge base?

In the right hands, technology is not the lazy option. It helps those operators that are working 10-12 hour days to complete the job in a more succinct way. But if you’re the kind of person who is trained with technology and relies on it heavily, then you have nowhere to go if that resource gets taken away. The amount of energy and effort that it takes to do the job right is so high. There is a calculation on that how much strain it puts on you day after day, year after year. And it’s needed to get the depth of knowledge of a jobsite.

Now then, if that operator can use the technology to relieve some of that pressure, surely that frees up more time and energy to do and create more. What else can they do with that capacity? Their time is now freed up because they’re good at what they do, much quicker, and not as tired. Think of the potential that person has! Endless potential!

Exactly. Endless potential.

NEXT TIME: Rebecca heads all the way to Lincoln to meet with Witham Group to take a look at how their green initiatives are really driving their business. 80

CASE F-SERIES EVOLUTION FEATURES BOOST SITE SAFETY AND OPERATOR EXPERIENCE CASE Construction Equipment’s F-Series Evolution compact wheel loader range delivers new levels of ease of use, operator comfort and machine productivity, thanks to a host of electro-hydraulic control systems. These customisable ‘smart’ features make the machines easier to control, allowing the operator to pre-set hydraulic response for individual job sites and applications. More commonly seen in larger, highproduction shovels, features such as return-to-dig, return-to-travel and returnto-height simplify operation and increase productivity. Return-to-dig uses a detent on the control lever, that can be set by the operator, to automatically bring the bucket back to the required height to dig into a face or stockpile after loading into a truck or hopper. The operator simply moves the single servo lever to the side to engage the function and then can let go of the lever as the machine automatically re-positions the bucket. This leaves the driver free to concentrate on steering and directional gear changes, as the loader arms automatically drop to the required height. Similarly, return-to-travel will lower the arms to a pre-set height that is suitable for travelling. This can be with an empty bucket or with a laden shovel, for a load and carry operation. Return-to-height, as the name suggests, will lift the loader arms to a pre-set point, to load into a waiting truck or a hopper, again leaving the driver free to concentrate on steering and selecting the desired gear within the transmission. The F-Series Evolution machines feature cruise control, to ensure the machines drive at a pre-set speed when roading. The feature can also be used to limit speeds on site, where restrictions apply, or to set a constant creep speed, if working with a powered attachment such as a sweeper collector. Despite their compact dimensions, customers can choose between four distinct models in the F-Series Evolution line-up.

The 4.5-tonne 21F is powered by a 43kW (58hp) FPT diesel engine that conforms to EU Stage V emissions standards. Power and torque are raised to 48kW (64hp) and 261Nm for the 5.4-tonne 121F, while the 5.7-tonne 221F and 6.2-tonne 321F both use a 55kW (74hp) version of the powerplant. All models benefit from an Eco driving mode, that limits engine speed to 1,700rpm, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Selecting the Eco mode does not result in a reduction in performance. Through engine speed regulation and a variable displacement hydraulic pump, the F-Series machines retain such highly productive output levels, that CASE recommends Eco as the default operating mode for the majority of dayto-day tasks. The two smaller models are equipped with a new monolift cylinder Z-bar loader arm, that delivers a parallel lift feature for use with pallet forks, without compromising the breakout force of a traditional Z-bar linkage when used with a bucket. Both machines have standard 67 lpm auxiliary hydraulic flow, while the 221F and 321F feature an optional high-flow package. This includes the creep speed setting for the transmission, a front electrical socket for attachments that require external power and a depressurised return drain function, to make it easier to swap between hydraulicallypowered attachments. There are two operator cabs available for the machines, both incorporating ROPS and FOPS level 2 protection. The higher trim Deluxe cab has additional storage spaces around the seat, a fully height adjustable steering wheel and an adjustable wrist-wrest for maximum comfort. The F-Series Evolution loaders will be joined later this year by an all-new, electric machine, called the 12EV. Powered by a 23kWh battery pack, driving conventional transmission and hydraulic pumps, the 3.8-tonne machine delivers 3-6 hours of operation on a single charge, depending on operation. The 12EV is equipped with a drive mode selector with three pre-set options and one customisable setting. Through control of the hydraulic motor speed, this can match output to the application, to prolong the operating time of the battery. The 12EV will benefit from all of the updates in the Evolution package, including the smart control features that ensure maximum comfort, control and performance on site.

BENEFITS of renting Equipment from CASE Rental Dealers

Choosing between renting and buying heavy equipment can be a challenging decision. Before making a choice, it is crucial to carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each option. While owning your Excavator or Wheel Loader may seem sensible for long-term use, there are associated costs with owning it. Here are key points to consider before committing to a substantial buying decision: 1.

Bypass the Initial Cost: Buying construction equipment involves a significant upfront expense. While buying might make sense for those anticipating frequent use, renting is a more financially straightforward option.

2.

8.

9.

Reduce Transport Costs: Renting simplifies logistics, with your CASE Rental Dealer handling transportation to and from the job site. This reduces coordination efforts and costs, especially for cross-country projects. Project-Specific Rentals: For specialized projects, renting offers a flexible solution without committing to buying new equipment. This allows businesses to explore new opportunities without a significant financial investment.

feature

PLANT PLANET

10. Maintain Financial Flexibility: Renting preserves capital and provides financial flexibility for businesses. This enables easier access to capital for further growth opportunities. 11. Tax Deductions: Rental costs are deductible expenses, providing a tax benefit, while purchased equipment is taxed at a depreciated rate over its lifetime. 12. Balance Sheet Impact: Renting is often viewed as a business expense, not affecting the balance sheet as a liability, preserving more capital for borrowing power. 13. Enhanced Borrowing Power: Owning less equipment reduces liabilities, strengthening a company’s borrowing power by presenting a healthier financial profile. 14. Try Before You Buy: Rent-to-Own Programs allow trying equipment risk-free. A portion of rental costs can be applied toward the down payment if choosing to purchase.

february 2024

Machinery Adaptability

15. Protection from Market Fluctuations: Renting offers flexibility during economic downturns, providing a safeguard for companies compared to committing to owning equipment. 16. Reduce Excessive Wait Times: On-demand equipment availability with rentals eliminates costly wait times, ensuring timely project completion without unnecessary delays. 17. Stay Competitive: Renting allows access to the latest equipment, ensuring competitiveness even for smaller companies without the need for frequent fleet refreshment. 18. Avoid Long-Term Commitment: Ownership involves various long-term costs and responsibilities. Renting provides flexibility without the commitment of ownership. 19. Eliminate Unnecessary Stress: CASE Rental Dealers handle maintenance, servicing, compliance, hauling, and storage, reducing stress for the equipment user. 20. Flexible Options with Attachments: Renting offers flexibility with versatile machines and attachments, providing cost-effective solutions for specific project needs. In short, the decision between renting and buying heavy equipment depends on individual business goals, financial plans, and long-term visions. While owning a fleet is ideal, incorporating equipment rentals as needed can offer a practical and cost-effective approach to completing construction projects efficiently.

LIEBHERR AND FORTESCUE REPOWER R 9400 EXCAVATOR TO ELECTRIC CONFIGURATION

The repowered Liebherr R 9400 E excavator at Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine.

L

iebherr Mining and Fortescue have successfully converted an R 9400 excavator from a diesel to an electric powertrain. The repowered machine was commissioned at Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine site in Western Australia. This is the first time in Liebherr’s more than 40 years of working with electric excavators that the company has repowered one of its excavators from diesel to electric configuration during the standard service life of the machine. A hydrogen Offboard Power Unit (OPU) designed and developed by Fortescue will be used to power the newly converted R 9400 E and is currently undergoing site-based testing within Fortescue’s purpose-built zero emission testing area at Christmas Creek. The repowering of the R 9400 E reflects the collective efforts of both Liebherr and Fortescue to develop zero emission

solutions for mining. Experts from both Liebherr and Fortescue were involved in the project, which took place at LiebherrAustralia’s Perth branch in Western Australia. “Liebherr is delighted that Fortescue has chosen to collaborate with Liebherr in our joint efforts to accelerate the pathway to a mining future without fossil fuels. This repower project demonstrates that decarbonisation is also possible with Liebherr machines previously supplied with diesel engines,“ explains Oliver Weiss, Executive Vice President of R&D, Engineering, and Manufacturing for Liebherr Mining. “The modular design of Liebherr equipment makes it possible to repower existing diesel excavators to new zero emission configurations, such as electric powertrains,” Weiss continues. “This means that the diesel equipment customers buy today is also future-

proofed for many years to come. The fact that we can ease the transition from traditional to decarbonised mining fleets for our customers is one of the key strategies of the Liebherr Zero Emission Mining Program.” “This is an exciting milestone for both Fortescue and Liebherr as we work together to develop the zero emission solutions the world needs to step beyond fossil fuels,” says Fortescue Metals Chief Executive Officer, Dino Otranto. “Our partnership with Liebherr is an example of true collaboration and how heavy industry can work together to decarbonise and eliminate fossil fuels.”

BREAKING NEW GROUND – TRIAL OF NEW LOW CARBON FOAMIX PRODUCT COMPLETE

L

eading construction materials supplier Aggregate Industries has successfully completed the trial of its new, innovative FOAMIX® product- a revolutionary lower carbon solution for pavement construction, repair and maintenance. Manufactured by Aggregate Industries, this milestone marks a significant achievement in the pursuit of sustainable asphalt and eco-friendly infrastructure within the construction industry. Trialled on the M65 slip road in Lancashire, the new Foamix solution is a cold recycled bitumen bound material, meticulously manufactured with negative carbon aggregates and biogenic bitumen throughout the process. The outcome is a cost-effective, high-quality solution that recycles the existing carriageway, offering a net zero solution production process and a highly sustainable option for asphalt construction projects. Already well-established within the industry as a replacement for traditional asphalt and cementitious materials, Foamix has been widely recognised for delivering a very low carbon footprint due to its cold process and recycled content. Making it an ideal choice for achieving a circular economy within construction. Building upon this success, Aggregate Industries has undertaken further development of Foamix by incorporating carbon negative aggregates and a biogenic binder. The trial has successfully delivered a carbon neutral asphalt solution, with net zero embodied carbon emissions cradle to gate (Scope A1-A3),

without the use of carbon offsetting, supporting National Highways’ target to deliver net zero construction by 2040. After rigorous research and development processes, coupled with live manufacturing and installation trials in partnership with Lancashire County Council, the new carbon neutral Foamix is the most sustainable and lowest carbon asphalt construction material to date and represents a remarkably sustainable alternative compared to traditional methods. With this product it is even possible to achieve a negative carbon footprint on projects when reusing the planings onsite. Whilst Aggregate Industries’ current Foamix solution already delivers a low embodied carbon footprint, the newly developed Foamix option has achieved a reduction to Net Zero CO 2 e per tonne across Scope A1-A3 emission thanks to the new product mix and use of onsite mobile plant production and installation. Carbon neutral Foamix can be used in conjunction with our SuperLow Carbon asphalt to deliver a ultra low carbon pavement. The illustration below highlights the potential pavement saving our systems could bring to your scheme. Commenting on the successful trial, Thomas Edgcumbe, Surfacing Solutions Managing Director at Aggregate Industries said: “We are delighted with the recent successful trial of our new carbon neutral Foamix product and are immensely proud to have partnered with Lancashire County Council and supply chain on this project. This

sets a new standard for sustainable construction materials, with the use of onsite production and high percentage of RAP, allowing us to build a circular economy. The successful outcome and development demonstrate our steadfast commitment to leading the construction industry towards a more sustainable and eco-conscious future.” The successful trial of the new carbon neutral Foamix marks a groundbreaking moment, as it not only provides a cuttingedge solution for construction projects but also represents the first potentially carbon-neutral asphalt solution within the construction industry. This achievement aligns with the commitment to increase the use of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) by 60 per cent in asphalt products as part of Aggregate Industries’ overall drive to achieve net zero before 2050. This evolution in cold lay asphalt is set to revolutionise the way construction projects are carried out, enabling a more sustainable approach while maintaining high-quality standards and costeffectiveness. By adopting carbon neutral Foamix, construction companies and local authorities can actively contribute to a greener future while meeting their infrastructure needs.
