Engcon Becomes Partner in Electric Venture in World Rallycross Championship

ENGCON

the leading global manufacturer of tiltrotators, hitches and smart accessories for excavators, will be one part of the partnership behind the Construction Equipment Dealer Team, CE Dealer Team, competing in the electrified World Rallycross Championship series in 2022. It will be the first time the World Championship will be determined with fully electrified cars, which is a major step towards sustainability in the world of motorsport. “It suits us very well in the shift to electrification. We are currently launching our third generation of tiltrotators, which, among other things, have been developed for the growing market of electric excavators”, says Engcon’s CEO Krister Blomgren. We are also pleased that we are doing this together with several of the leading players in our industry and that Volvo Construction Equipment has become an official supplier to FIA World Rallycross, which makes our investment even stronger”, says Blomgren.

Stronger support network for Hiab customers RESPONSE

times for Hiab customers are to be further reduced with the introduction of 11 fully-bespoke service vans for repairs and maintenance assistance. The new vans are equipped with smart tracking technology to locate the nearest Hiab trained engineer, meaning support to keep cranes and handling equipment running safely and effectively will arrive in rapid time. The investment in new vehicles follows a similar investment just one year ago, pushing the fleet size up to just under 40 vans in total. Furthermore, an order has been placed for another eight vans.

Ashley Dallow, Depots Manager for Hiab, said: “After a challenging period, we are still seeing increased demand for our products which is testament to the strength of UK industry to bounce back. The last thing any business now needs is for More information on the upcoming series and the CE Dealer further downtime so we are making this investment in our support Team can be found here: www. fleet to help companies remain cedealerteam.com.

operational. These vans will be at the frontline of our service network. “After all the ups and downs of recent years, businesses need to keep moving so its equally as important to select the right after-sales service as it is to buy the right product. We have a range of ProCare service agreements that can be tailored to Hiab equipment and business needs which includes repairs and maintenance services.” In recent weeks, Hiab unveiled a second ASC in South London and has further plans to open official service centres in the coming months as it steps up efforts to make trained engineers even more accessible for customers. Stuart Goodeve is depot manager at Hiab North, Northallerton, and he added: “The best way to protect your investment in Hiab equipment is to have it maintained by a Hiab-trained engineer. Our teams can repair equipment at the point of breakdown and the smart technology on board means we can get customers back to work as soon as possible.”

Collins has put one of its EC300E Hybrids to work in a team of 10 Volvo crawler excavators and 23 articulated haulers – with more to come – on the SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton Gateway project next to the M1 Junction 15. Over three years, Collins will move 4,500,0003 of earth around the 480 acre site at a rate of 100,0003 per week in peak times to create plots for distribution buildings and a lorry park, a strategic rail freight interchange, acoustic bunds, and landscaped areas. The project also involves widening the dual carriageway and the construction of a by-pass around the village of Roade to minimise traffic congestion, along with the planting of 60,000 trees. “We have a lot of work to do, and everything has been precisely calculated at the tender stage, so productivity and fuel efficiency are crucial to us. Any small gains that we make cumulatively add up to a lot helping us to keep on schedule and within budget and to minimise our impact on local residents and the environment,” Warner explained.

The company was acquired by AER Rents Group in 2014 but continues to operate as an independent hire company giving its customers the service, flexibility and care associated with a smaller business alongside the availability of an increased fleet holding supported by the AER Rents investment. The refreshed branding is centred on a new, more contemporary logo and updated colour palette which feature in our new website and will be seen over the forthcoming months appearing on our vehicle liveries and hired equipment as well as merchandise and signage across London. Steve King, Managing Director of Mr Plant Hire said “One of the big areas of improvement we identified when I joined the business was the image we portrayed to our customers, competitors, and prospective employees. Mr Plant Hire is a long-standing traditional business with a bold forwardthinking attitude and while the vision of the business and desire to serve our customers has moved well with the times the image and

branding hadn’t quite kept up. For this reason it was felt that the time and effort required to refresh our look was a good initial investment so that we could develop the right platform from which to take the business forward.” We are stepping forwards from our previous look, developed over several years, which had grown dated with the colour scheme feeling harsh and unsophisticated, the font not reflecting the type of business we wanted to be and the various logos confused and difficult to apply to our delivery vehicles and hire equipment. The updated brand follows the principle that less is more - simplicity and clarity lead to good design, reflecting the consistency and reliability of our service. We are extremely happy with the new look for our business and feel it demonstrates the solid, dependable, reliable business we have been for over 40 years… and aim to be for at least the next 40. A One Stop Shop for SME Builders: Trade Plant Hire The Trade Plant Hire App is designed to make equipment hire simple. With a service based on the needs, budget and location of tradespeople, the app offers a large pool of suppliers and equipment to choose from. Listing available stock with Trade Plant Hire is completely free. With no joining fee and no monthly subscriptions, hire

companies can simply sign up to the platform and upload their stock. The easily configurable inventory management solution allows stockists to keep track of hires, offer dynamic pricing, and check whether payments have been made, all under one platform. On top of this, Trade Plant Hire do not take a cut from the hire price. Instead, a commission fee is added to the hire through the app and reinvested into app development and promotion.

Hubstaff’s scheduling features allow workers to see when and where they will be working by checking the app Time Efficient Timecards: Hubstaff Hubstaff is a start-up aimed at helping teams work smarter. With many construction companies working across multiple work sites, the task of keeping track of where workers are, what specific jobs they’re working on, and how these aspects impact your business can be time consuming. With an app that each member of a team can download, site managers can keep track of each worker’s time and location using GPS technology. With the option to Geofence job sites, workers can automatically be clocked in and out when they enter and leave a created site. Alongside this, Hubstaff’s scheduling features allow workers to see when and where they will be working by checking their Hubstaff timecard within the app. As for the admin, the app can create automatic timesheets that are sent to manager’s email daily, as well as breaking down how much time is spent on specific apps to aid accurate budgeting for labour costs. →

Improving site safety

Improving Site Safety: Can Telematics Be the answer? Akvile Peckyte takes a look at the telematics services helping the industry to drive up safety standards.

IN

recent years, the use of telematics on construction sites has sharply increased, but how can it act in maximising the safety and performance of a fleet? In this article, we consider how a safer site is a connected one, and what role telematics can play in this.

Improving operator habits According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), on average, each year, about 7 workers die as a result of accidents involving vehicles or mobile plant on construction sites, and a further 93 are seriously injured. To minimise the risk of serious accidents on site, improved visibility of all staff and vehicles on site and the reduction

of unnecessary movement can be achieved through the utilisation of telematics. A centralised telematics management system provides detailed insight into vehicle and driver performance, which can improve driver safety by preventing collisions. Furthermore, a computerised maintenance management system (CMMS) can reduce breakdowns by alerting operators on when it is time to perform maintenance, which leads to decreased vehicle downtime and improves productivity.

Introducing technology to help, not to hinder It is important to consult both workers and managers when introducing new telematics technology, as having everyone on site on board with the change will result in higher usage rates and consequently, improve safety. Theft and misuse of equipment Telematics can hinder unauthorised access to equipment, as many solutions now adopt individual use codes, which allow only trained personnel to access a vehicle or a control system. Automating data collection for compliance and management Insuring a construction site is costly, but the adoption of telematics can simplify administrative dealings. Fleet managers can track exactly where an operator was at a given time, as well as their behaviour. This granular data can be actioned into coaching to improve driver behaviour, and it can also prove that risk has been actively minimised to insurers. By documenting

everything that occurs on the construction site, fleet managers can devise action plans to improve specific behaviour and identify potential shortcomings. Insurance companies will look positively towards this, and it can lead to lower premiums. Furthermore, being able to access separate streams of data under a singular umbrella of site telematics allows management to stay on top of multiple ongoing projects, meaning that all workers, materials, and plant are managed efficiently. Prediction of behaviour and prevention of human and machine error are all key to safety, and telematics make them easier to put into action than ever before.

Interview

Clee hill plant

Service Counts at Clee Hill Plant Clee Hill Plant Ltd has a 50-year heritage behind it. While traditional values for customer service remain at the heart of the business, all eyes are firmly on the future. Rachel Lambert talks to its owner and managing director, David Hargreaves, to find out more.

DAVID

Hargreaves is not one to put himself in the limelight. A modest man by nature, the former chartered accountant is almost apologetic for being the subject of this interview, saying that he normally keeps a low profile in the industry. But, David Hargreaves has some interesting eco-friendly innovations in the pipeline, a selection of which are being showcased on the Clee Hill Plant stand at Hillhead 2022. It is one of the reasons we have pressed him to come out of his ‘comfort zone’ and ‘share all’ in this interview with Plant Planet.

40 • June 2022 • Plant Planet

David says, “I suppose the honest answer is that I didn’t want to be a bean counter anymore! I wanted to be in a profession that influenced change for the future, rather than accounting for actions in the past, so I moved into industry instead.”

David Hargreaves, managing director, Clee Hill Plant Before we explore that in more detail, we rewind the clock back to 1984; the year that David qualified as a chartered accountant. I’m curious to know what made him leave that profession and enter the world of construction plant hire.

His accounting and economics background has stood him in good stead. David made his industry debut as Group Financial Accountant with a Chesterfield based company called Anglo United PLC, which was involved in open cast coal mining through a subsidiary business called Coal Contractors. Following Anglo’s asset swap in 1986 with Northern Strip Mining (NSM PLC) which was also involved in open cast coal mining, there emerged an enlarged

meant we needed support from banks and venture capitalists. I have to say, the likes of Dunedin, Lombard and NatWest were very supportive in helping us with the MBO.”

The coal industry at the time was declining and David recalls how it became increasingly difficult to obtain planning permissions, sell the coal produced, and stay profitable. In 1989, NSM had acquired Clee Coal Contractors and Clee Hill in Hill Plant from the Plant family. the UK were both staying afloat, but Clee Hill, whilst incorporated as a ultimately it was NSM’s American limited company in 1965, can trace operation together with an ill-advised its roots back much further; to 1876, purchase of a South Wales deep in fact, when it started as a haulage mine in 1995 which placed the PLC contractor using steam traction in financial difficulty in 1996. Always engines and progressed in 1922 into plant hire and contracting and became fascinated by plant and machinery, known as The Clee Hill Transport and and with a firm belief they could take Clee Hill Plant to “the next league”, Rolling Company. One of the open David and Derek discussed the cast coal mining sites happened to be possibilities of a management buyout. behind the site where Clee Hill was The MBO of Clee Hill Plant was based in Ludlow. At the time of the acquisition, Clee Hill Plant had a turnover of £2.5 million operating out of one depot in Ludlow. Fast forward to 2022, and the company now turns over in excess of £20 million, employing 190 people in nine depots across the UK, with the head office in Chesterfield.

Coal Contractors Ltd. David, moved from the holding company to Coal Contractors to become Financial Controller in that same year, and in 1991 was promoted to Financial Director & Commercial Director to Coal Contractors and several other companies in the Group; a combined role that continued until 1996.

When Derek, the senior of the two partners by 15 years, decided to retire from Clee Hill Plant in 2006, it left David with a dilemma. “I don’t mind admitting I was at a crossroads. We had three, maybe four depots at the time, and were much smaller than today, so it did raise the question as to whether I should bow out too. It felt quite daunting to take it on myself, without Derek in the frame. But thankfully, I decided I →

I haven’t done it single-handed; we have a great team in place, many of whom have been with the business for a long time and together, we have achieved a record turnover.” It has certainly been an upwards and onwards journey. Today, Clee Hill Plant is recognised as a leading construction plant hire company, and the largest hire company in the UK of non-operated compaction and surface dressing equipment supplying customers in construction, civil engineering and road maintenance.

“If a customer has a whole lot of asphalt to put down, they need to know that the plant they are hiring is reliable, or if they do encounter an issue, that they have the reassurance of a quick response. It could be a major motorway project, with penalties for late completion. to react without delay. It is a different type of pressure.” David concedes that there is always room for improvement, describing himself as the kind of person who never rests and always striving for better. He has great respect for his loyal team, many of whom have evolved their careers within the business. David gives an example of Steve Gilbert, who is now Operations Director, but worked his way up the company ladder having started as a hire controller. He also has much gratitude for Mel Hunt, Business Excellence and Strategy Director, describing him as a very good strategist with a lot of business experience, whom he considers a mentor and is very supportive. Completing the senior team is Paul Coxon, Sales Director who joined the Company from a national plant hirer in 2019, just prior to covid but is already making his mark. “I have always been a great believer in apprentices (we’ve currently got about 20) with the same number again

clee hill Management buy out in may 1997

who have completed apprenticeships. They have been fundamental to our company growth” This leads him on to talk about some of his frustrations in the industry. “Recognition of our industry deserves a much higher profile than it gets. I have always campaigned for apprenticeships, and more support and incentives to recruit, train and develop people in the industry. There is a general lack of support, stemming from the government and education system. Not everyone wants to go to university and be academic, but equally they are not encouraged to look at apprenticeships and construction plant either. Some people are much more suited to more practical professions, and they deserve encouragement, with a much greater choice of training courses that are specific to our industry. We’re moving on in the industry and have made great strides with much more to come but try for example finding training courses for our engineers with an electrical or electronic emphasis, there is nothing, the closest is automotive. The CITB has not moved with the times. “I have challenged the CITB and the CPA in the past to do more. It frustrates me when people say, ‘why did you give up your chartered accountant profession to go into construction?’ as if it was a foolish move. I may be an accountant by training, but that doesn’t make me any better than for example my brother who is a skilled builder. Skilled people should be encouraged, recognised, and rewarded in whatever profession they are in.” Of course, there are other challenges too; supply chain issues and cost pressures feature highly. David believes that we, as a nation, should have done more in terms of security

of supply, saying that “we have been too reliant on other countries as our dependence on Ukraine and Russia is currently highlighting.” This was also raised by him in the 1990’s with Government and civil servants in relation to coal and the Energy market but sadly this fell on deaf ears and it was left to market forces at the time. The move from red diesel, everincreasing customer expectations, and Health & Safety demands, especially so with Highways, are cited by David. He describes “plant as being the whipping boy when it comes to cost and that more pre-planning and forward thinking in the industry is required.”

Intelligent battery management ensures level charging and monitors each battery unit, and minimises any power wastage through lighting, idling, or heating, to maximise running time.

“We’ve converted the Hamm to run on batteries and made some other modifications to improve the design, such as accessibility to the roof, giving the ability to work from within the cab, removing the dangers from working at height from outside. Front view visibility from the cab was always a problem, but we have sloped the nose, which improves this considerably Also we have improved the steps to the rear which makes “We need to learn from past mistakes getting into the machine easier. so we can prepare for the future. Local supply chains surely have to come into the equation to shore up security of supplies, while Also being launched at Hillhead also reducing our carbon footprint. from Clee Hill Plant’s stand is a Brexit and the current conflict in redesigned TEX Bristowe chipper, Ukraine should be a wake-up call equipment traditionally used for restarting manufacturing and alongside the deadweight roller. engineering in the UK so we can be more self-sufficient.” David explains that they have been

“Skilled people should be encouraged, recognised, and rewarded in whatever profession they are in.”

Environmental issues and sustainability feature highly on Clee Hill Plant’s agenda. So much so, they have some exciting innovations to unveil from their ‘green-themed’ stand at Hillhead displaying a variety of machines that have been converted to zero-emission battery power. David and his colleagues have been working with a team of experts in this field, and it’s something he is very proud to have been involved in. Merlo Group:

A focus on Family, fast service, & the future Hannah Bounford catches up with Shaun Groom, General Manager at Merlo UK Ltd, to discuss all things Merlo; from their investment in employees, to the £750,000 Investment in the UK Parts and Training Development

2022

has already proved to be a busy year for Merlo Group. This is not news for the Ringwoodbased UK branch — although the Covid-19 pandemic saw many businesses within the construction sector put projects on hold, resulting in a drop in demand for machinery, agriculture was very much still running. As a result, Merlo UK have remained operational over the past two years, continuing to supply clients with machinery and

This issue, Hannah Bounford learns more about the focus of the family-run business: the customer aftersales journey, the investment the Merlo family puts into its workforce, and what’s in store for this year and beyond. For many businesses, the last two years saw a decline in demand

for machinery, with many entering ‘survival mode’. On the contrary, Merlo UK has been moving full steam ahead with investments in sustainability, machinery, and aftersales care. Shaun Groom, General Manager at Merlo UK Ltd, says “the investment in infrastructure, particularly in the last 12 months or so has really come to bear. The demand for equipment and the demand for support has gone on to grow from there.” Shaun joined Merlo UK during the pandemic. Since then, he and his team have been overseeing the improvements to the UK Parts and Training departments. In 2021, a £750,000 Investment in Merlo’s UK Facilities took place, seeing a brandnew training centre built on the grounds of the company’s head office in Ringwood. Shaun comments:

“We started literally from the ground up, it’s a completely new build. It’s a big commitment and investment for the family in the UK facility, which really underlines their commitment to the UK for the long-term. Our principal aim is to train our technicians and our dealer networks. We’ve got over fifty dealers across the UK, and we’re scheduled to have around more than three hundred technicians through the facility in these first 12 months. We run up to around a dozen technical courses for our technicians.”

Above & Below: Before and after the building of merlo’s uk parts & training facilities

He adds, “We are also looking to bring customers in, particularly for operator training on some of our more complex models. It will give us the opportunity to present new models and the technology in the right kind of environment. As we move into the realms of telematics and remove vehicle monitoring, the connected world is a new space for all of us.” →

Cover Story → Training within the facility commenced on 10th January 2022, with UK Training Manager Nigel Perrin at the helm of operations. The facility lends itself to both in person and virtual training, with options available for remote learning and hybrid training. The current training calendar offers a wide range of courses, ranging from Machine Installation to Electrics and Diagnostics.

Merlo Group Alongside the training facility, Merlo UK has invested in and expanded their parts department with the view to provide the best possible customer service to their dealer network. The investment saw the facility become a Customs Bonded Warehouse. This allows Merlo UK to use CFSP (Customs Freight Simplified Procedures) to bring spare into the UK without experiencing any delays in customs at the ports and airports. Shaun explains:

“We’re shipping close to 90% of our daily parts orders out of

our UK warehouse. Someone today can order a part as late as 5:30pm and have it before 8:00am the next morning. We’re focused on trying to give the very best in after sales support.” The launch of Merlo’s Generation Zero range of equipment has generated a greater need for this kind of training within the UK dealer network. As Merlo UK extends its range of new electric machinery, the need for training to ensure customers are delivered the utmost in aftersales and care will continue to grow. Shaun explains: “At Merlo, our exciting new venture is Generation Zero. Going

fully electric requires a great deal of training and initial support because it’s a new way of powering vehicles. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that it’s the biggest change since introduction of the internal combustion engine. There’s a very clear move from Merlo Group to introduce a range of machines in the next few years that will be completely emission-free.” This move towards emission-free vehicles from Merlo is no doubt in response to the ever-growing climate crisis. Many companies are looking to incorporate machinery that is zero emissions at the point of use, especially given the UK Government’s goals to become net-

zero carbon. However, for family-run Merlo Group, this drive is motivated from a much more personal position. As Shaun puts it: “I think we’ve all got to have an eye on the future. We owe it to the next generation. We can’t just stick it in a hole and bury this stuff. We can’t be in a situation where we’re greenwashing for the sake of here and now.”

driver comfort, reduce the impact on the surrounding environment, and increase the safety of Merlo’s Generation Zero range: ZERO emissions, ZERO noise, and ZERO use of fossil fuels. Since then, customer feedback on the machine has been positive, Shaun explains:

“I think we’ve all got to have an eye on the future. We owe it to the next generation.”

Launched in December 2021, the eWorker is the first machine in Merlo’s Generation Zero range, based on three key pillars to enhance

If you put it on a typical eight-hour charge overnight, it’s going to give you an eight-hour cycle time the next day, before you need to recharge, which is practically unrivalled in the industry at the moment. The demand and the interest are phenomenal - I don’t use that word lightly.” “There are very motivated people investing in environmentally friendly technology. And from our point of view is great, it’s very encouraging. But this won’t be a one-off for Merlo, that’s why we call it Generation Zero. The eWorker is just the first step in that journey.” Investing in the future is not a new concept for Merlo Group. 87-yearold Amilcare Merlo, known widely as Mr Merlo, prides himself on the company’s investment in its staff. Despite his age, he can often still be found speaking with engineers inside of the Merlo Factory in Cuneo, Italy. Shaun reflects on the benefits of a family-run business: “Our customers appreciate that it’s a business that can be quite agile and can respond. As for our staff, they feel valued. When we had a visit from the family earlier in the year, they knew everyone on first name terms. That goes a long way. When we’ve come through a period like Covid, the →

“At Merlo, we’re only limited by our own thinking. We’re always keen to explore new opportunities, and new areas of the market” We are probably one of the most automated factories in our sector in Europe, with a big investment in robotics, particularly for welding. But if we implement a robot to carry out a process, we don’t make anyone redundant. Those employees are redistributed in the business — that’s a family view. When your family owned, the family can make a decision one day and act on it the next. So that’s one of the big benefits

As for what’s in store for the second half of 2022 and beyond, Shaun explains:

“We’ve reorganised our dealer network and are committed to having a dedicated construction network. We’ve certainly seen an immediate growth in our construction business, and we look set to see that continue through the latter part of this year. We are very encouraged by what we’re seeing in terms of some of the big infrastructure projects going on. There is demand for equipment. There’s certainly demand for

technology, with telematics and connected equipment. We live in a world today where with those kinds of devices, we can drive efficiency from our products. For us right now, the very exciting part is Generation Zero. We’ll be looking forward to launching more elements of that later this year. With Bauma coming up later this year, we’ll be launching to the international market. At Merlo, we’re only limited by our own thinking. We’re always keen to explore new opportunities, and new areas of the market. Already, the launch of the eWorker has brought us into new spheres of the market like holiday parks and campsites, where a zero emissions, zero noise machine really has got a place.” To see more from Merlo UK, visit: https://merlo.co.uk/

They have quite literally grown up with it. Their father, Liam Lynch, founded the company in 1980, and remains actively involved with the business in his role of Managing Director. The brothers say their father is “as enthusiastic and committed as ever.” So, I ask them about their reflections on the ‘family business’ over the years they have been involved.

change, and whether there has ever been a ‘lightbulb’ moment for Merrill and Rob that has influenced their business ethos and subsequent road to success. “When we launched our first management statement five years ago, I can remember turning to Rob and saying, ‘is this working?’, ‘are our people understanding this?’ ‘Is it really part of our culture’?” Merrill says they had done everything to promote it internally, from posters to mouse mats, but something wasn’t clicking. They discussed it with the HR leader to see what could be done. “We asked whose job it should be to make sure our people understood our message, and it quickly became clear to me and Rob that there was a finger pointing back to us. Both of us felt it, both of us knew it – we knew we had to live and breathe our

LAMMA 2022: Higlights from this year’s agricultural event David Chuck shares insights from the 40th year of LAMMA, the UK’s leading agricultural machinery show

THOUSANDS

of farmers, businesses and industry leaders flocked to the NEC for the 40th year of LAMMA, the UK’s leading agricultural machinery, equipment, and technology show. After a two-year gap due to COVID, visitors and exhibitors alike were optimistic about the return of the show. This year it occupied nine halls. Nick Ewbank, Managing Director of veteran LAMMA exhibitor Lynx Engineering, said, “We have been coming to LAMMA since it first started and are very happy it’s back. I have been really impressed with

turnout and happy to have had some international visitors to our stand as well.” “There has been a good flow of people throughout the two days with a great deal of good, genuine interest in our products,” added John Christofides, Regional Sales Director at Bobcat EMEA. “Our team have been very happy with the quality of conversations we have had so far with visitors.” Visitors also took advantage of numerous show features and scheduled speakers. Event

favourites, the Farm Safety Zone and the International Export Advice Centre once again presented the latest advice and developments to help farmers protect their staff and grow their businesses. In addition to this, there were also several new additions to the line-up like the Farming 4.0 Trail, LAMMA365 Dealer and Speaker Zones and Fendt & Valtra Speaker Zone – all of which brought even →

This big change applies to vehicles which are used off-road – these will no longer be automatically entitled to use red diesel. Instead, use of the rebated fuel will be based entirely on what the vehicle is used for. Fortunately, agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and fisheries are among the industries which have retained the entitlement to use red diesel. However, the fuel issue gets a little cloudy for those operating mixed-use businesses. In conclusion, the event saw some very interesting and informative sessions. Vertikal Days 2022

Reaching new heights at vertikal days 2022 David Chuck takes Plant Planet on a tour of the high reach event of the year

THE

first Vertikal Days event was held at Haydock Park back in 2007, with around thirty exhibitors who took the plunge to support this very new event. The event grew, and today it is the UK & Ireland’s largest lifting equipment and powered access show. This year, the show has moved back to a more traditional time of the year, following the disruption to the past two shows due to the pandemic. Although just eight months since the last show have passed, exhibitors both old and new have turned out.

This was the second time the show had been held at its new venue – the East of England Showground.

Platforms, who will market and deliver the machines to workplaces throughout the UK and Ireland.

This year more than two hundred manufacturers and service suppliers were represented, making it one of the most diverse collections of powered access and lifting equipment in the world.

Lee Crosse, Executive Strategic Officer of Metal and Modular, said that the concept for the new MEWP came from talking to powered access users who were looking for a machine that could solve some specific problems, a wider working height range, cost savings and improved safety features.

International Platforms were exhibiting a ground-breaking machine – The Navigator 6.0 push-around, which was unveiled to the public in February by UK designer and manufacturer Metal and Modular Fabrication Services. With demand expected to be high, they have teamed up with access platform specialist International

This year more than 200 manufacturers and service suppliers were represented 80 • June 2022 • Plant Planet

Said Lee: “If, for example, you have a job that involves working at 3m and 6m, you will normally have to change machines to do it. We worked out a way for our machine to safely reach a working height of 6m without using batteries or hydraulics. The operative simply steps in, turns a handle which raises the platform, including the operator, materials, and tools, to their chosen working height up to 6m.”

Over 20 years of collaboration with businesses across the hire industry has led to inspHire developing software for all sizes of business – they were also among exhibitors in the busy Vertikal Days Market Place area. Magni was showing its new higher capacity eight tonne RTH 8.25 SH 360-degree telehandler, which can handle 5.3 tonnes at its maximum forward reach of 25 metres. This is the first time it has been shown in the UK. Specialising in Telehandlers, its product range is now constantly growing and pushing the limits of versatility.

Above: bravi platforms Below: Trackunit’s stand

Yet another exhibitor in the area was Bravi Platforms, who are a key player in the low-level access sector. Their platforms are created with both the end-user and rental companies in mind; their eye for detail and Italian craftsmanship can be seen from design to production in the machines, which are made in the North-East of Italy. They now produce more than 3000 machines a year. A machine which garnered a lot of interest was the Promax RR9/200 Rail Spider MEWP, designed for the railway maintenance sector. In order to get onto the rail tracks, the rail spider lift has rubber tracks that rotate 90 degrees. This allows it to drive up on to the rail lines, before lowering its rail wheel undercarriage into place and lifting the crawler tracks free. The travel speed on normal ground is only 2km/h but it has a maximum speed of 10km/h on its rail wheels. Other features include radio remote controls, telematics and geo-location systems, a smaller one-man basket and nonmarking tracks.

Scalable Electrification of Plant Machinery Until recently, the construction industry was rather sceptical about the electrification of heavy construction machinery. After all, the power-hungry machines need a lot of energy to move large quantities of earth, or to lift and transport heavy materials. Taking the challenges machine operators and owners face when looking at reducing their CO2 emissions and transitioning to electrification, companies such as Webasto have worked tirelessly to develop technology and solutions to address the complexity of needs.

Battery systems One of the main prohibitive factors to transition large machinery over to battery power is the expense. And, while the large OEMs can absorb the costs, many construction machinery and commercial vehicle manufacturers shy away. This is where Webasto comes in! The company has spent years using its expertise and technical know-how to develop the technology needed to provide high quality modular battery solutions, so they can be used in a wide variety of vehicle and machinery applications. The packs comprise 16 modules each, which are in a robust housing and include a dedicated cooling interface. “We have developed the pack so that it minimises the prohibitive cost factor,” explains David Stafford Commercial Manager, Webasto Group UK. “This allows our customers to customise their applications with a standard product.”

Another key consideration when electrifying machinery is the ability to keep the machinery working consistently and in all temperatures. The modular battery packs developed by Webasto are interchangeable therefore can be swapped over with fully charged packs when required and on site. Charging of the boxes can be done off site, meaning there is no need to remove the entire machine from site. However, the main benefit of a Webasto CV Battery System is the Thermal Management System and Vehicle Interface Box (VIB). The primary VIB controls secondary BMS units in each battery module, therefore balancing the current flow from each one. As well as enabling communication between individual hardware components and corresponding software, the VIB also serves as the interface between the batteries and the vehicle, combining the functions of a power distributor,

BMS and fuse box in a single enclosure. In addition, the modules use aluminium cooling plates on the bottom of each of two layers of packs inside the modules. This avoids having to use liquid cooling within the pack so there is no risk of coolant leaking.

APPLICATION Webasto also supports customers through all phases of the project – from conception and development to implementation and beyond with various services: “Many of our customers are smaller and are just feeling their way into electrification. We advise our customers on all aspects and do not only deliver finished product,“ says David. This approach has many advantages for Webasto’s customers: The technology is scalable; the products are of the highest quality and the total cost of ownership and time-to-market are dramatically reduced. With Webasto you are guaranteed a battery system that will ensure your machinery works harder for longer.

Impact Testing Thwaites Cabbed Dumpers main contractors, sub-contractors and hirers.

Important Reccomendations: Watch the impact test video for yourself

As the leader in site dumper safety, Thwaites have manufactured and offered machines fitted with cabs for over 30 years. Today the 6-ton and 9-ton range are both available with cab options. Thwaites were keen however to go one step further. In a controlled environment an impact test was conducted enabling an assessment of the structural integrity of the cabs fitted, if impacted during the loading procedure by an excavator. For the test, a standard 9 tonne Thwaites Dumper was selected, the excavator used was a 14tonne machine (as it would most likely be on site) with a fully extended boom, slewing a loaded bucket at full speed. The ground conditions for the test were wet, with the environment on the Thwaites proving ground created to be consistent with those found on site. The standard fit cab on all Thwaites dumpers is compliant to ROPS (Rollover Protection System) & FOPS (Falling Object Protective Structures) ISO 3471 & ISO 3449. The test criteria, brief and execution

86 • June 2022 • Plant Planet

were conducted by Thwaites Engineering Manager Bob McElvogue who divided the test into two sections. Test 1: This test was to assess the structural integrity of the cab by striking the unit at the ‘A’ pillar. Test 2: This test was to assess the structural integrity of the fully finished cab by striking the unit at the front via a screen guard.

The findings of test 1: No failures were observed or reported on inspection, the energy of impact was absorbed through the cab structure.

The findings of test 2: No failures were observed or reported on inspection. The screen guard performed well in absorbing the initial impact with the force being distributed through the cab frame. As a result of the test Thwaites 6-ton and 9-ton dumpers are now recommended by the Major Contractors Group for use on their projects by

The Contractors Plant-Hire Association (CPA) via a stakeholder working group produced and issued in May of 2019 The safe use of dumper guidance.

The guidance included the following section: Using dumpers safely depends on a number of factors including planning, supervision, selection of a suitable machine, competence of personnel, effective exclusion zones and keeping within the operational limits of the dumper. If any of these are deficient, the risk of a serious accident increases significantly and it is therefore essential that all of those involved ensure that dumper operations are properly planned, managed, supervised and carried out safely by competent people. Thwaites recommends that in conjunction with the CPA guidance and HSE (Health & Safety Executive) guidance that operators do not remain in the cab during loading. Always carry out your own risk assessment before operating any item of plant equipment and ALWAYS wear a seat belt.

The Hydrema 707G Range The Hydrema range of Articulated Dump Trucks are known for low ground pressure and high power to weight ratio producing maximum performance in the most challenging of environments. The 707G range sits very well in the 7 ton class and offers all of the benefits of a larger rear tip ADT.

This 7 ton range employs the latest Cummins F3.8 - Tier 5 engine in both 55kW & 90kW models and a hydrostatic transmission set up, so that the operator can be assured of enough power when driving or tipping whilst efficiently maintaining very low levels of CO2 and fuel usage across each project.

The 707G is also equipped with Hydrema Telematics providing real time data for every machine, wherever you are. For further details on the Hydrema range, get in touch with a member of the Hydrema UK team.

With excellent 360 degree visibility, feet on the ground maintenance, low level entry to cab and low noise levels in cab, the 707G is built with operator safety in mind! To create a machine with the best stability they can, Hydrema have used the proven chassis design of their larger dump trucks. With its unique articulation pivot point, impressively low ground pressure, swivel tip body as standard and particularly short turning circle, the 707G will safely go where other machines cannot operate.

Collins Earthworks Invests In Sustainable Future With Electric Volvo Technology wet, unsuitable material into strong binding layers.

To support its CO2 reduction goals, the Midlands-based earthmoving specialist runs several pieces of hybrid and fully electric machines from SMT GB, including the UK’s first Volvo L25 Electric wheeled loader. Collins Earthworks boasts one of the UK’s largest earthmoving and stabilisation equipment fleets and is keen to remain at the forefront of the industry in all aspects, including when it comes to carbon neutral construction. Collins regularly runs environmental audits, senior management have NEBOSH Environmental qualifications, and the company is now registered with the Carbon Footprint Standard and accredited with ISO 14001 for Environmental Management – an achievement Collins is particularly proud of. To get to this point, the earthmoving specialist has invested in solar panels to power its cabins and welfare facilities, as well as electric pool cars for employees, with charging points fed by clean electricity at the head office. Collins has also established a sister company, EnviroTrac, specialising in lime and cement stabilisation to mitigate on-site waste by transferring

As for its machinery fleet, Collins is introducing new hybrid and fully electric models from SMT GB to help curb its emissions even further. As well as the UK’s first two Volvo EC300E Hybrid excavators, SMT GB has also supplied Collins with the country’s first Volvo L25 Electric compact wheeled loader.

Quiet, comfortable, and emissionfree This 5 t compact wheeled loader with 0.9 m3 bucket capacity is powered by lithium-ion batteries that cover an eight-hour working shift of general site clear-up duties with one single charge. The Volvo L25 Electric has two electric motors, one for the drivetrain and one for hydraulics. Decoupling the subsystems makes the machine more efficient. Collins’ operators’ impressions of the Volvo L25 Electric are that it functions much like a conventional dieselpowered machine but with the benefits

of electrification. “It’s quiet and comfortable and highly responsive. You just start it up and off it goes!” said Nathan Warner, site supervisor at Collins Earthworks.

Maintenance made easy Another main benefit for the company is its ease of maintenance. “The machine is easy to maintain as it has no engine – there is no need to check the engine oil and coolant every day or refill fuel. We simply charge it overnight by plugging one end of the charger into the machine and the other into a normal household socket,” Warner said. Longer term, Collins plans to invest in further hybrid and fully electric machines from SMT GB. “Investing in sustainable innovations and solutions plays an integral part within our company ethos and profile at Collins, as we seek to pave the way for other contractors towards carbonneutral construction,” Warner said. “In a few years’ time, we want every machine to be hybrid or fully electric. It will have a massive impact, not only for the benefit of the environment but also those who live and work around our projects.”

Kleenoil Micron Filtration Systems clean used mineral oils and contaminated diesel fuel to as good as new. These are useful for quick fluid transfers, but don’t expect fine levels of filtration.

New oil and diesel is rarely clean: many users don’t recognise this or know what the rating of a clean oil should be. And why should they? Surely buying a new product, you would expect it to be clean, but then how can it be; considering the multiple routes and transfers and storage involved to get to your site? So, for those who want to clean oil before use, what is the best course of action?

reuse. (rather than disposal). •

To offer rotational oil cleaning of machines from off hires and project uses.

To add as a permanent installation on a machine where OEM filtration is inadequate.

To resolve a one-off contamination or cleanse after repair work.

To clean old, stored oil for reuse — with sampling.

Kleenoil cellulose depth filtration is one of the finest levels of oil and diesel fuel filtration that removes dirt and moisture in the same natural application. Using this method as a single pass transfer will ensure good levels of cleanliness; better still, leave it to circulate cleansing in storage, whether drum or IBC to achieve levels of better than new.

And why cellulose depth filtration?

Don’t underestimate a filter cart as a permanent application.

• A finer level of filtration to remove particulate down to 3 microns.

It is all very well cleaning oil; but if it’s just to get dirty again it’s still going to cause the wear and tear associated, so why not consider a permanent install, whether it be as a self-powered system or directly on the machine using a pressure feed? A machine with constantly cleansed oil is going to outperform its counterparts.

Why the need for a filter cart? •

To clean new or used oil in transfer from storage to machine, or vice versa.

To clean oils used in test runs for

Remove water — emulsified or free.

Affordable and easy to change out replacement cartridges.

Kind to the planet — as a natural, sustainable product.

Use the same unit for mineral oils or diesel fuel.

KLEENOIL manufacture and supply the finest, most affordable cellulose depth filtration to clean and maintain your lubricants to the finest cleanliness levels. www.kleenoil.co.uk sales@ kleenoil.co.uk

Secondary filtration, as a mobile or fixed system can save a lot of wasted time and resources, having an impact on lowering operating costs by reclaiming and extending the useful life of the oil and components and lowering yearly waste oil handling.

Not all carts are the same... An off-the-shelf cart may give a reasonably fast flow, but it will not offer a fine level of filtration — usually, a spinon filter will offer around a 20-40 micron rating at best and not remove moisture.

4 Ways Telematics Can Optimise Your Mixed Fleet It can be challenging to stay ahead of the rapid advancement of technology, especially when you work in a sector like construction or plant hire. However cutting-edge telematic solutions like the one provided by ABAX will help you cut business costs while maximising profits - read on to see how.

1) Technology will do the work for you Running a profitable construction company entails having the right equipment, materials and people together on the jobsite simultaneously, and the logistics to make that happen is time consuming. A connected telematics solution gives you the insight needed for optimal planning by consolidating data from all fleet assets into one single interface, meaning you know the status of every single tool, equipment, vehicle and machine in real time. Leverage your data so you can get: • Easy to run profitable projects • Cost savings – less fuel and no extra hardware • Maintenance control - less downtime for vehicles and machines • Asset tracking made easy to reduce loss and theft • Working hours verification and accurate timesheets or invoices • Overview of assets within a project • Machine data for a replacement strategy

2) Collecting data into one unified view Wouldn’t it be nice to eliminate the stress of switching between platforms and using multiple logins? By using a solution that delivers a unified view with one login, it is easier

92 • June 2022 • Plant Planet

and faster to get an overview of all company assets in one map. Now you can get easy access to daily updates on driver performance, asset location, maintenance, fuel use and idling on all company vehicles and machinery. Brand neutral platforms like the ABAX Smart Connect can be used as an addon to the in-depth OEM data. Most operators and fleet managers will benefit by using both a brand neutral platform, for example, ABAX Smart Connect, which is ideal for a quick daily overview and user friendly reports, while machine administrators can still log into their OEM platform to gain deeper insight like error codes and diagnostics for repairs.

3) Asset tracking side by side with your fleet There are other types of assets that aren’t technically part of a fleet, but are no less crucial to projects like excavator buckets, power tools, generators and pumps. If assets like that are left behind at a site or get misplaced, it will delay your project. Fortunately, fleet managers can track these assets in the same platform as the main fleet. Depending on the size of the asset, there are multiple solutions available such as long term battery

devices and Bluetooth tags that can fit your need.

4) Data will help you keep the engines running Scheduled reports will allow you to shift from reactive fixes to proactive maintenance. Safety in the quarrying industry is at the forefront for all. As one of the most dangerous industries to work in, since 2000, quarrying has seen over 3,500 workers suffer injuries reportable to the HSE, with 31 of those being fatal. In this article, we look into how technology can help keep workers safe in hazardous conditions

Drones Drones have been increasingly used in quarrying sites, and their potential to provide remote surveying work is vast. According to a 2022 report, by 2026, the commercial market for drones is expected to generate over 41.3 billion USD. Beyond simple imagery, drones are able to offer detailed topographical data, allowing large amounts of space to be surveyed accurately.

Simulation training and in particular, virtual reality could offer up an opportunity to gain new operational skills and knowledge away from the dangers of a real quarrying site. Through simulation, learners are able to make mistakes and receive precise feedback at every step, and by using virtual reality headsets, they can familiarise themselves with the controls in a much more realistic setting than previously possible.

Automation Self-driving trucks, robot drills, and more - the past decade has seen leaps in advancement when it comes to automation in quarrying. When it comes to large-scale real-life applications, the Anglo-Australian mining giant RioTinto uses more than 130 autonomous trucks as part of their Autonomous Haulage System. With pre-filled GPS routes, the trucks do not have a driver and instead are operated via a supervisory system and a central controller. According to RioTinto, by using autonomous trucks, they have been able to operate each truck for an average of 700 hours more than conventional haul trucks. Not only boasting operational efficiency, by automating processes and utilising autonomous technology, operators are kept out of harm’s way on site. 110

RioTinto also pioneered AutoHaul - the first heavy-haul, long-distance autonomous train operation in the world, operating in remote locations in Western Australia, saving operators 1.5 million kilometres of road travel every year. Alongside this, RioTinto uses 26 autonomous drills to safely operate from a distance, removing the need for the operators to undertake manual work on-site – at the operations centre, the teams can view all operations in real-time through screens. Although such a large scale of implementation is not yet a reality for most due to financial constraints, RioTinto’s successful application of automation and remote operation illustrate how technology can aid in creating a safer site.

ACCORDING TO RIOTINTO, BY USING AUTONOMOUS TRUCKS, THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO OPERATE EACH TRUCK FOR AN AVERAGE OF 700 HOURS MORE THAN CONVENTIONAL HAUL TRUCKS. FUTURE WASTE

And when it comes to lifting heavy components in crane operation, the demolition experts can also count on the 6300 HD’s enormous 300 t load capacity. →

secret of Ferraro Group’s success Asked about his company’s Italian recipe for success, Managing Director Giuseppe Ferraro smiles and says: “We have simply focused on the right industry. After around 35 to 40 years, the dismantling of industrial plants or commercially used buildings is usually more economical than the costly refurbishment, and consequently we never run out of work. With our machinery, we are also able to operate throughout Europe, and we always keep an eye on the costs: Accordingly, we regularly invest in modern machinery to work even more efficiently and economically!”

HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN UNLOCK THE VALUE OF WASTE ON SITE

One method growing in popularity is to convert waste into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) – a high-yield source of energy for replacing fossil fuels in energy production or industrial processes such as cement production. SRF is an alternative fuel produced by refining waste through treatment processes which may include shredding, sorting and biodrying. The process will remove additional recyclates such as metals and

Waste management is a crucial yet often underutilised way to boost a business’s green credentials. Now, with the Government’s plan to halve the amount of residual waste sent to landfill or incineration by 2042 – it’s time to embrace the waste technologies that stand to hasten the process of change. One way to invest in the circular economy and reduce waste disposal costs and carbon emissions is by unlocking the value of the waste an

that consists of non-recyclable paper and carboard, plastics, organics. Although a small proportion of these materials can be recovered for recycling most are compromised once they enter the residual waste stream. Therefore, recovering energy from these materials is currently the best environmental option for this waste. Biotechnology solutions like ours have real value here, as they can be used to create SRF by removing the organic fraction of mixed residual waste (MRW). When MRW goes through our on-site aerobic digestion process, the organic component is removed, and mass and volume are reduced by approximately 50% and 70% respectively. The material that’s left, which we call floc, is a consistent, homogenous and
