TRELLA LAUNCHES IN THE UAE
MOTOR VEHICLE TRADING COMPANY INAUGURATES NEW SALES AND SERVICE FACILITY IN JORDAN Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation announced that the exclusive general distributor of FUSO products in Jordan, Motor Vehicle Trading Company, recently inaugurated its new sales and service facility in Naur-Madaba, Jordan. This marks the opening of the most extensively furbished dealership to-date in the up-and-coming FUSO market.
Trella announced the expansion of its operations into the United Arab Emirates. The expansion complements Trella’s existing operations in Saudi Arabia and increases Trella’s presence to four countries: its home market - Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and now the UAE. Trella’s growth follows the recent, successful completion of a $42m funding round, comprising $30m new equity and $12m debt facilities. The MENAP Road Freight market is a significant one – worth $50bn, and Trella’s fund raise proceeds are being invested in tech capacity and product development to fuel growth, accelerate the company’s journey to reducing the costs of moving goods, and continue being the regional market leader. Trella’s growth strategy remains focused on its GCC expansion plan. This latest market entry paves the way for a new multi-city expansion, which will increasingly connect multiple trucking routes, representing a next frontier in efficiency of trucking in the region and is consistent with Trella’s mission to reinvent trucking. Trella disrupts and reshapes the freight industry by connecting shippers directly to carriers, with significant positives for both. The platform solves industry challenges including shippers suffering unreliability, inefficiency via fragmented truck ownership, high price points and low transparency.
The new sales location is strategically positioned in close proximity to arterial highways and provides easy access to both the international airport and the capital of Amman in order to support the needs of local logistics providers. In total, the branch covers a built-up area of approximately 6,000sqm on an expansive plot of 24,000sqm. The facility includes a showroom that can display up to six vehicles, as well as a service center boasting 40 working bays to cover maintenance and repairs. A number of training rooms have also been established to host regular workshops for employees, to ensure customers are serviced according to Mitsubishi Fuso’s international standards. In addition to this facility, Motor Vehicle Trading has launched mobile serve vans to further improve service coverage. Motor Vehicle Trading is part of Abu Khader Automotive, one of the leading automotive groups in the Kingdom of Jordan, having been in business for more than 70 years. Its operations now cover the sales and leasing of numerous passenger car brands, as well as areas such as real estate development and warehousing logistics. Mitsubishi Fuso and Abu Khader Automotive together have been supporting the growing economy since 1987. Customers can select from a range covering light- to heavy-duty trucks, as well as the light-duty Rosa bus, all shipped from as built-up (BU) vehicles from MFTBC’s Kawasaki Plant or the Oragadam Plant in Chennai, India, by MFTBC’s partner organization Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV). Currently the light-duty Canter is the top-selling FUSO product within Jordan, as well as the greater MENA region..
Shippers can book directly and access a transparent pricing structure. Shipments can be tracked in real-time, and receive analytics on transportation performance. Improved load utilization also helps reduce cost. For truck drivers, Trella improves efficiency as freight is moved intelligently, which boosts carriers’ earnings and creates job opportunities. Trella has 350+ shipper partners including blue-chip brands such as Coca-Cola, Maersk, Mondi, Henkel, Orascom and Cemex. It also has 15,000+ carrier partners..

RAIMONDI FLATTOP TOWER CRANES PUT TO WORK FOR QATARI MEGA PROJECT and eights under the hook (HUH) raging from 74m to 125m, while the two MRT144s positioned in different jobsite areas have 61m jib configurations and 43m HUH.
Raimondi Middle East deployed 10 topless tower cranes for the construction of one of Qatar’s most awaited residential developments: The Seef. “Currently, we have nine Raimondi cranes operating onsite, as one MRT159 was dismantled in June,” said Wael Hasan, Commercial Director, Raimondi Middle East. “Five cranes, one MRT294, one MRT223, one MRT189, and two MRT144s, originally sold to UCC fleet, have now been resold to the contractor of this project: Urban Trading and Contracting WLL. The additional four new MRT159s were sold and installed directly by Raimondi Middle East in January 2020,” Hasan explained. The MRT159s onsite have jibs ranging between 38m and 60m
“Another significant point we took into account was the fasttracked nature of the project as the contractor was looking to install the cranes in a short timeframe to accelerate operations. The MRT159, MRT189, and MRT223 were chosen for the models’ characteristics of arriving onsite with all parts preassembled, and embedded elements to facilitate the erection stage,” said Hasan, detailing that the Raimondi Operations department deployed four manpower groups to accelerate the process. The Raimondi MRT294, with a jib length of 70m and a HUH of 133m, was chosen for its maximum lifting capacity of 16t, and its strong performance in a variety of climate conditions. The MRT294 is also the tallest crane currently at work on The Seef jobsite. “Raimondi Cranes is supporting the jobsite with ongoing service and monthly maintenance to ensure smooth operations and successful project completion.” The nine cranes will be dismantled in the upcoming months as the project’s completion is expected to be by the end of the year. Situated at the heart of Lusail City waterfront and in the proximity of several landmarks, the project is destinated to become one the most popular outdoor destinations..

BUILDING THE ROAD TO THE FUTURE
Dynapac’s MEA office was established in Dubai four years ago in partnership with the Fayat Group. Dynapac provides its clients with road construction and infrastructure machinery and is experiencing a better 2021 as compared to the past two years.
S
wedish organisation Dynapac has had a global presence for 87 years. With its expert machines now being available to contractors here in the wider Gulf area, Dynapac’s Dubai office caters to business in the Middle East region, Pakistan and Africa. Dynapac’s most promising regional markets are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt where the company’s machines are most in use. These three nations have the greatest number of ongoing projects as well as numerous, upcoming infrastructure plans in the pipeline. Throughout its presence in the Middle East, Dynapac has participated in the building of a commendable list of regional projects. “I can remember some major projects we worked on such as the new Abu Dhabi International Airport a few years ago, the Ghantoot highway and the road leading up to the Saudi Arabia border,” recalls Issam Gharaibeh, Regional Business Line Manager, Middle East at Dynapac. “More recently, in Saudi Arabia, we have worked on a few projects in Neom, on the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, on a project for Aramco and Al Khafji Highway. In Egypt, we have also done several projects, one of them is the Toshka project,” adds Gharaibeh.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - PROFILE
Product portfolio Dynapac’s road construction machinery is the most renowned amongst road contractors. Most of them have been using the machines for decades. “Our most popular products in the region are the SD2500C/ CS paver, the pneumatic roller CP275, small ride on roller CC1250 & CC950, asphalt roller CC3800 & CC4200 and soil compaction roller CA30D & CA25D,” says Gharaibeh. Through their network of dealers in each country, Dynapac has established a robust after-sales service plan for their customers. With an established and smoothly-functioning, remote telematics system in place for the last few years, clients can initiate automatic reports on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. These reports give information on fuel consumption and service status to fleet managers. It also offers the chance to set up timely machine support and upkeep. With the amount of infrastructure work happening in the region, Dynapac has a packed schedule. Having said that, the company is progressively working towards the needs of the future. Gharaibeh says: “Our main challenge today is to keep up or even ahead of the fast global development towards digital. Through automation, we want to communicate to our customers that we can enhance their status in the market and guarantee the success of their projects. Our machines provide high performance and flexibility with a low cost of operation and maintenance.”
Dynapac Pneumatic Roller CP275 In layman language, this is the tool that gives the finishing touch to the asphalt. A perfect result depends on the performance of the roller and on the skills of the operator. This machine comes with a compaction width of 2,370mm and a maximum operation mass of up to 30,000kgs. It is ideally suited for a wide range of highquality applications. In addition, the hydraulic propulsion system increases reliability and reduces maintenance costs. Dynapac’s Pneumatic Roller is built on a hydraulic transmission system, which simplifies steering and on-off operations. It is a single pump, single motor transmission system with steady speed adjustment and poses no impact on road material. Compaction is precision work, especially compaction near the edges. Both sides of the CP275 tyres are wider than the frame, thus yielding excellent compaction performance, sparing customers the need for a small CC roller.
Dynapac Paver SD 2500C/CS This machine helps pave the asphalt when building new roads or performing maintenance on old roads. To achieve the best paving quality there has to be a high-performance screed, smooth material flow and an efficient, powerful drive. The paving quality is measured in compaction, evenness, and profile - the Dynapac SD paver range does all of the above. The intelligent control system in the PaveManager 2.0 combined with the new 7” display provides an excellent monitoring of the complete paving process and ensures an optimal material flow. It also provides real time paving parameter overview, paving parameter memory function and automatic crown and slope settings. Combined with additional sensors, PaveManager 2.0 can also display real-time layer thickness and working width data. The Dynapac SD tracked pavers come with the safe impact system™ – a hydraulic anti-shock push roller that avoids the typical marks on the surface due to truck docking. The system also extends the docking length and provides flexibility when working with different truck models.

e’ve all heard that Ritchie Brothers have bought over Euro Auctions for an amazing settlement amount. Undoubtedly, the resultant company is quite the force to be reckoned within the used equipment auctioning world. “Whilst the current news is that Ritchie Brothers have acquired Euro Auctions, the transaction is not expected to be finalised until sometime in Q1 of 2022. When the acquisition is complete the intention is for Euro Auctions to continue to trade, under the Euro Auctions brand, with no change in operations,” says Johnnie Keys, General Manager, Euro Auctions.
after. Keys feels it is still too early to predict the exact number of lots for the December sale. Having said that, the Euro Auctions team of sales managers and territory managers are accomplished at sourcing second hand equipment, and the December sale should be no exception.
In terms of market reach, Euro Auctions is well established in the markets (USA, UK, Australia, Middle East) it operates in but now will be able to provide additional service offerings such as inventory management services, data solutions, financing, warranty, and insurance. Euro Auctions’ markets to over 100 countries globally. “We are sure that both businesses will benefit from the merger in terms of market share and overall revenue streams. As both businesses have their set of loyal customers,” continues Keys.
Currently buyers are looking for used, low hour equipment of any make and model, as new stock is scarce, and OEMs are struggling with supply. This time the Dubai auction will feature:
Euro Auctions have an upcoming auction in Dubai on December 13th. Keys says: “There is always great interest at all Dubai sales. In 2020, we sold over 1,000 machines at our December auction but we are seeing a lower volume of equipment available in the market in 2021 due to supply chain issues being experienced by OEM manufacturers.” This in turn is driving up the market value of used equipment and making the new/unused equipment on sale highly sought
The pre-Covid numbers of registered onsite floor/in person bidders were always more than 200. “We are now approaching those numbers again as we all return to some sort of normality. Hopefully we will have a record attendance at our December auction,” he continues.

Euro Auctions’ Dubai sale last year (December 2020) had 599 registered bidder accounts, of which 33% were first time bidders. That’s an 100% increase over the previous auction sale. Since then, the number of new customers has increased at every auction sale.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - PROFILE
Statistics from last year’s sale show that buyers registering for the sale were from 74 countries and actual buyers that successfully purchased machines were from 24 countries. Top countries by hammer total, in order, were UAE, United Kingdom, Oman, Lebanon, Ivory Coast, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Taiwan. Buyers by world region were: Middle East 73%, Europe 11%, Africa 6%, South America 6%, GB & Northern Ireland 4% Asia 1.5%, North America 0.25%.
Online or in person? Euro Auctions has its own robust internet sales platform, where buyers can bid online at all auctions. To bid online the user must create an online account and register for the auctions of interest. Registering gives the user a bidding number. Then the user can watch and bid live from anywhere. In addition, the ‘Daily Marketplace’ is a new section on the site where equipment is online 24/7 and prospective buyers can ‘Buy Now’ at competitive prices or negotiate with ‘Make an Offer’ options. In all cases, bidders can watch and follow their bids live in real time as the auction progresses. With online bidding still popular following COVID-19, 37% of all sales (from their last sale held on September 2021) were transacted via the internet. Of this 37%, 3% of the sales came through their ‘timed auction’ category which culminates on the last day of the sale. ‘Pre-bidding’ is part of the overall Euro Auctions sales process, however buyers still very much like to visit the site, examine machinery and equipment for sale and then bid in ‘real time’ on the day. That said, Euro Auctions is
finding that at all sales globally, bidders and buyers from the home country (and locality) are bidding more fiercely than bidders from outside the country or region where the sale is hosted. This is true of this recent Dubai sale, with local buyers being the most successful. “Our yard is always open for in person inspection of equipment and our team is on site to assist any customer with equipment inspections. We see the majority of inspection activity on site the week before the auction,” adds Keys. To assist buyers, the quality of videos and photos uploaded online for all equipment is of vital importance. Buyers can also request a detailed inspection report. “Buyers typically prefer to base their judgement on the videos and photos of the equipment or through in person inspection rather than more subjective inspection reports,” informs Keys.
Formalities after the auction After the auction, all equipment documents are immediately available, and the equipment can be collected on the same day after the payment has been made. For any items clearly marked in the sale as “GCC DUTIES NOT PAID” customs duty will only be payable if the unit is being imported into the UAE mainland or other GCC countries on entry. Euro Auctions in Dubai is based in a Free Zone. “We provide all documentation required for export of equipment and can assist customers with customs clearance and freight forwarding. Just tell us where you want your machine delivered to and we can organise everything on the customer’s behalf,” says Keys. There’s no margin for Euro Auctions on this service as the important thing is looking after the customer. At their last sale in Dubai (held in September), 561 lots went under the hammer, with an average value of $11,973 per item sold, and a hammer total of $6.717 million. On the day of the sale, buyers from 64 countries registered to bid, with bidders from 21 countries buying equipment. Eighteen of those transacted their purchases online.

The company is awaiting its December sale to get to know more customers and provide even better service and sales support. Customer feedback has always held immense importance at Euro Auctions, one of the main reasons for the company’s reputation in the market today, be it from the perspective of its customers or its peers..

PROVEN RELIABILITY
With its huge fleet of reliable machines, Masaha Company for Rental of All Kinds of Equipment has shown its mettle on Kuwait mega-housing project Al Mutlaa, says Equipment Rental Manager Alaa Ghazaleh.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY
A
l Mutlaa Residential City in Jahra Governorate is the largest housing project in Kuwait’s history, ultimately planned to provide homes for around 400,000 citizens. Work on infrastructure – roads, utilities, schools, mosques, shops and health centres – has been underway for a number of years on the massive 100km2 site, with major works already completed, though completion of the residential stock is expected to take years more. For contractors, the mammoth works have required large amounts of equipment and workers. An additional factor has been tough ground conditions, notes Alaa Ghazaleh, Equipment Rental Manager at Masaha Company for Rental of All Kinds of Equipment, putting additional strain on machines and the service departments. The importance of the project for Kuwait, and the many different contractors on-site, means there is massive pressure on all players to meet their deadlines and avoid delays. For Masaha, the project has been an opportunity to demonstrate the value it can bring to contractors, with large
fleets of machines used by contractors on-site. Masaha’s rental fleet has been at work on Al Mutlaa for a number of years, says Ghazaleh. The Kuwaiti heavy equipment and commercial vehicles distributor, a member of the Foud Alghanim & Sons Group of Companies, represents a number of brands. Its total rental fleet numbers above 2,100 units, demonstrating rapid growth in recent years and even recent months. The young fleet helps boost performance and reliability, while ensuring the machines have the latest in technology and safety features. The primary workhorse used by contractors has been the Sany SY335C, a 35.5-tonne hydraulic excavator which Masaha commonly supplies with breakers for excavation works. The broader range includes Weichai gensets, Foton trucks and buses, Heli forklifts and Sky Boom aerial working platforms, as well as the broader range of Sany equipment such as trucks, wheel loaders, rough terrain cranes and truck cranes.

“We are a one-stop shop. We can rent or hire up to 70% of all the equipment that a contractor needs on a work-site,” says Ghazaleh, noting that in most cases its machines are supplied with operators – cranes, excavators and so forth. Manlifts, scissorlifts and other Sky Boom aerial work platforms are supplied without an operator, but Masaha provides operator training for clients.
“We have a large storage of spare parts on-site, and we are ready to prepare any breakdowns within a few hours, or else provide a replacement machine for our customers,” says Ghazaleh. “We are the dealer for Sany as well as a rental company, so we have a large amount of expertise in-house and the necessary spare parts supply to quickly repair machines and reduce idle time.”
Sany mobile cranes are seeing increased market recognition, he says, and for generators the firm is seeing good demand in the 110-150kVA range. Importantly, Masaha machines have been inspected, approved and certified for use, allowing them to be used by oil companies and on major sites where machines need certificates of approval.
The company has a 5,000sqm workshop at its main branch, as well as six mobile workshops working 24/7. In addition to the large service staff, Masaha also has a significant supply of stand-by machines, meaning it can guarantee machine availability to rental companies in case of any incidents. It also uses telematics and regular machine monitoring on-site to carry out preventative maintenance and keep machines in top working condition, limiting the chance of break-down even in harsh conditions.
Ensuring the many machines have maximum up-time amid the hard ground conditions and double-shift work schedules is a key challenge for the rental company. Being able to keep machines running is a consequence of the Sany machines being durable and reliable, as well as the mobile workshops on-site that carry out regular maintenance and deal with any issues.
The Sany excavators can be supplied with a range of attachments, including the Sany bucket or a range of jackhammers. The optimal size is the large 3-tonne jackhammer, which the excavator can readily handle. “This configuration was enjoyed by contractors working at Al Mutlaa, as it was highly productive and with overall low fuel consumption,” said Ghazaleh. Whereas competitor machines typically use around 350 litres of fuel in an 8-hour shift, the Sany excavator uses 280-290 litres. “When you do the calculation for a large fleet – say a customer with 200 excavators – and they are saving 50 litres per shift, with 26 days per month, that’s a significant amount of fuel savings each month.”
Alaa Ghazaleh, Equipment Rental Manager at Masaha Company for Rental of All Kinds of Equipment.
26
For Ghazaleh, the Al Mutlaa project has been an opportunity to demonstrate to customers how reliable the Masaha rental offering is, ensuring that customers have the machines they need to get the job done. “Here in Kuwait, once you show to customers that they can trust you, they will stick with you.”.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - WHEELED EXCAVATORS
CONSIDER WHEELED EXCAVATORS Wheeled excavators are not widely utilized in the Middle East, but they have some important benefits on jobsites, such as faster transit times and limiting surface wear, compared with tracked excavators.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - WHEELED EXCAVATORS
W
hile wheeled excavators are widely used in markets in Europe, they’re little utilized in the Middle East, where the preference is for tracked excavators.
Adrian Hall, Product Director - Heavy Products at JCB, notes that wheeled excavators are an ideal tool for truck loading in tight quarters, minimising lane closures, undercutting concrete or asphalt, patching, shoulder work, kerb and gutter repair, landscaping, spreading top soil, fine grading, laying pipe, placing manholes or ditch cleaning. “The rubber tyres also allows the excavator to travel paved roads, work in shopping malls, squares, parking lots, city and urban centres and other paved areas without damaging the pavement and kerbs,” says Hall. Where do wheeled excavators have the chief advantage over crawler machines? “Typically, if the application calls for a lot
of travel to, from, and around the job sites, a wheeled-type excavator could be the better choice,” explains Hall. “A wheeled excavator’s mobility allows fast independent travel between jobsites as well as on the jobsite giving you more job planning flexibility.” Contrarily, “If the job involves less travel within a jobsite or frequent re-positioning, where raising and lowering outriggers would take extra time or has a severe underfoot condition requiring increased floatation, a track-type excavator would provide better operating efficiency,” he notes. JCB offers a number of wheeled excavators, including for material handling applications, namely the JS145W, JS160W, JS175W, JS200W models for construction applications, and the JS20MH Material Handler. The range-topping JS200W weighs in at 23.2 tonnes, with a 1.19m3 bucket capacity, and is powered by a 128kW JCB engine.

The engines in our wheeled machines were tested for 110,000 hours in 70 different machines across the toughest applications and environment. These engines have been optimally tuned and integrated to work with the JCB wheeled excavator range.” Additional features include industry leading servicing and service intervals, with ground level servicing, and easy access to filters and daily checks. The machines have single point remote greasing for upper structure and auto check of engine oil and coolant level on machine start up.
A positive flow hydraulic electronic control system brings better operation accuracy, and operators can achieve real-time and accurate control of the throttle by switching between different modes such as traveling and digging. When it comes to maneuverability, the SY155W has fourwheel drive and large ground clearance for excellent off-road capability. For use on large job sites, or travelling between sites, the capability of traveling in high speed greatly shortens transit times, boosting overall productivity..

ALLIED CRANE HIRE TAKES DELIVERY OF LIEBHERR LTM 1230-5.1 MOBILE CRANE Liebherr has delivered the first LTM 1230-5.1 mobile crane to the African continent. It went to the crane and heavy transport company Allied Crane Hire, based in Cape Town, South Africa. The long telescopic boom of the 230-tonne crane and technical innovations such as VarioBallast, VarioBase and the Liebherr Single Engine Concept were important decision-making criteria. Allied Crane Hire has established itself as a specialist in crane hire in sub-Saharan Africa. The 24-year-old company operates more than 80 mobile and crawler cranes, which are mainly used in petrochemicals, mining, wind and solar farms and the construction industry. The company bought its first Liebherr crane 20 years ago. The LTM 1230-5.1 is now the latest model in the fleet. André Engelbrecht, Managing Director at Allied Crane Hire, explained: “Crane experts will agree that Liebherr has the best technology in mobile and crawler cranes and is a pioneer in the industry. An important criterion for us in choosing the LTM 1230 5.1 was its 75-metre telescopic boom. This allows us to do many crane jobs without having to set up a lattice jib.” The Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 is an ideal crane for work
in steep positions and at great heights, for example in wind turbine maintenance or petrochemical operations. With lattice extensions, the LTM 1230-5.1 reaches a maximum lifting height of 111m. The engineers at Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH put the multiaward-winning VarioBase support technology at the heart of the structural steel construction when creating the concept for the LTM 1230 5.1. This makes it the first crane to have an asymmetrical support base..

POPULAR MODEL
FAW TRUCKS’ 8.140FL CONTINUES TO SUCCEED IN THE SOUTHERN AFRICA MARKET FAW’s sales success in the heavy commercial vehicle segment of the South African market is thanks – in large part – to the smallest offering in its line-up, the popular 8.140FL. Hailed as a practical and versatile model, it appeals to customers in the farming and agriculture sector, small contractors and businesses and fleet operators alike. The 8.140FL with manual transmission has proven time and again that, despite its modest dimensions, it packs a mean punch. FAW went to great lengths to ensure that it combines cost-efficiency with the best possible payload and the best turnaround time, without sacrificing any of the quality for which the brand is known. In fact, when it was first introduced, FAW Trucks was lauded for providing local customers with a vehicle that offered the same ruggedness and durability of its larger offerings, but in smaller and dimensions. “Customer feedback has revealed that one of the main reasons for the 8.140FL’s popularity over the past six years is the fact that, before it was introduced locally, it underwent rigorous testing to ensure that it can withstand the unique – and often harsh – working conditions associated with African markets,” explains Yongjun Li, CEO of FAW Trucks SA. The 8.140FL is sourced from the FAW China Corporation and assembled at FAW Trucks SA’s production facility at Coega, Gqeberha. Emphasizing its status as a versatile workhorse, practicality is a key feature of the 8.140FL. It has a body and payload
allowance of six tonnes and provides seating for a driver and two passengers. Part of its appeal is its Euro 3 compliant, high-pressure, common rail four-cylinder in-line Cummins ISF 3,8-litre engine. This powerplant is turbocharged and water intercooled, making it ideally suited to the heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) segment of the market. With a maximum power output of 105kW at 2,600 r/min, it has a healthy 450Nm of peak torque on tap between 1,200 and 2,200 r/min, It is sold with a two-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and benefits from the full extent of sales and/or service from representative outlets across South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. FAW Trucks has a dedicated national parts distribution centre in Spartan, supported by its branches in Durban, Harrismith and Cape Town..

MINING TRUCKS
State-of-the-art articulated dump trucks and rigid frame haulers can provide maximum productivity for site operators when used effectively in conjuction with operator training and service contracts, to guarantee uptime.
42
B
ell Equipment prides itself on being the producer and distributor of the widest range of articulated dump trucks (ADTs), ranging from the B18E up to the B60E. With its headquarters in South Africa and major representation around the world, including a factory in Europe and logistics centres in Europe and North America, the brand is especially strong in southern Africa, says Nick Kyriacos, ADT Product Marketing Manager at Bell Equipment. Top selling models include the B30E 30-ton machine and the 40-ton and 45-ton ADTs, depending on the market. The B40E (39-tonne rated payload) and B45E (41-tonne rated payload) share a common engine platform and near-identical drive trains, making the service costs the same: the smaller variant appeals to rental companies, which typically offer the machine on a cost-per-hour basis. For owner-operators, which typically calculate productivity of an ADT by looking at cost per tonne, the B45E offers an increased payload with the same service costs and only slightly higher fuel consumption, making it a more compelling machine for this segment. Looking larger, the Bell B50E 50-ton ADT provides the benefit of the additional payload and good fuel economy, especially per tonne. “It’s a 6x6 machine and one of our differentiators
AFRICA NEWS - DUMP TRUCKS
[in the 50-ton class] is that we are able to use standard production 875 tyres,” says Kyriacos. Wear on tyres can be a major cost for a fleet operator, often the largest after fuel. Maintaining haul routes, ramps and other site infrastructure is essential to reduce wear, but can only achieve so much when the ground conditions are heavily abrasive. “We get some hard rock applications where tyres don’t last 2,500 hours. And then in an operation less than 300 kilometres away, they are getting 8,000-hour lives on the exact same tyre. So tyre wear is mainly application-driven, but it’s a massive cost.” While Bell is exclusively focused on ADTs when it comes to haul trucks, its largest model, the B60E, competes with midrange rigid haulers with its 55-ton payload. Notably, it has a 4x4 configuration. “Rigid trucks are great for productivity if you’re able to achieve maximum speed. But with safety concerns growing, we’re finding more and more sites around the world are limiting their speeds to what’s attainable with an ADT,” says Kyriacos. “And when the speed is capped – whether it’s 40km/h or 30km/h – you’re not getting the benefit of that additional capital cost of a rigid truck and you’re not getting the benefit of that additional fuel consumption.”

43
AFRICA NEWS - DUMP TRUCKS
Meanwhile, a 4x4 artic hauler has better manoeuverability than a 6x6 model or a rigid truck, especially applicable for a sites with tight corners. Another advantage is improved tyre life for a 4x4 ADT versus a similar weight class rigid truck, given that rigids typically employ rear axle drive, meaning accelerated wear on rear tyres, while the B60E uses all-wheel drive. “We’ve achieved beyond 10,000-hour lifespan on tyres on the B60E front axle and 14,000 hours on the tyres on the rear axle in an application in South Africa,” says Kyriacos. Another advantage is better performance in wet conditions than a rigid hauler, he notes. Looking to the market conditions, typically there is wide variation across mining activities, given the diverging market cycles across commodities. That naturally affects capital investment in new equipment, and even demand for aftermarket services. “We see consolidation periods when prices are down, we see decreased utilization at some stages, and then the absolute
opposite, where sites are cranking out the tons, times are good and capex is available, and machines are bought cash. So it’s a roller coaster.” That also affects demand for service contracts, depending on utilization levels and replacement cycles. “We pride ourselves on our after-market business – we really work hard to keep our customers happy,” explains Kyriacos. “A number of tailored products are offered with the sales of machines. We have Bell Care Package, which is a service offering tailored to a customers’ machine utilization. Customers select the number of years and the number of hours per year they want coverage for. We also offer three different levels of extended warranty coverage: with drivetrain; with drivetrain and hydraulics; and then a fully comprehensive extended warranty.” Rebuilds are also offered by Bell Equipment, allowing customers to receive a machine with a rebuilt drive train at certain intervals. “It’s a major part of the circular economy, we’re trying to maximise the life of our machines.” The durability of Bell’s ADTs is demonstrated in the field: In the Middle East, they have a fleet of 40-ton ADTs with a customer that are running 60,000-75,000 hours. The fleet of around 30 machines was originally sold in the mid-2000s. “Service and maintenance have got to be there. Durability has got to be there. We pride ourselves on building the residual value for our customers.”
Nick Kyriacos, ADT Product Marketing Manager at Bell Equipment.

When it comes to technology solutions, on-board weighing is standard on the Bell range of ADTs. Used in conjunction with Fleetm@tic, the company’s telematic system (available as standard for two years on trucks), it gives site operators a good overview of productivity, allowing them to ensure that
AFRICA NEWS - DUMP TRUCKS
the trucks are utilized to their full capacity and that loading processes are optimized. “You can see the activity ratio, where you’ve got lots of unladen idle time or even laden idle time, where possibly there’s congestion at the discharge point – and so that gives you an opportunity as a site manager to be able to go and and make the necessary changes in that area, to minimise the standing time and maximise productivity to eliminate wasted fuel and engine hours.” The weighing sensor also feeds into several other onboard safety features, such as Hill Assist. This ensures that a truck depowers and comes to an elegant stop if the driver removes their foot from the accelerator while driving down a slope. For hill starts, it uses the payload and slope angle to calculate the required torque and removes the park brake once this level is reached, meaning a smooth take-off for the truck, without any roll-back.
New rigid haulers win approval Well-known as a producer of ADTs and other quarry and mining equipment, in 2018 Volvo Construction Equipment launched its range of rigid haulers, a first for the Swedish manufacturer. The range of four haulers – the R45D, R60D, R70D and R100 – is available in Africa. “So far, we have made some good sales of the R60D and R100E in Africa. For example, our dealer recently delivered five R100E rigid haulers to a customer in Zambia,” says John Bennett, Product Manager for Rigid Haulers, Volvo CE Region International. “All our other R60D and R100E haulers in the field have been performing well. The reliability has been very good and customers have been happy with the operating costs.” The flagship hauler is the R100E, with a 95-tonne payload. Its low fuel consumption is highlighted as a running cost advantage. This is partly due to the efficient engine and also to the Volvo Dynamic Shift Control, which automatically
Bell trucks also use inclinometers that measure the load based on the angle of the truck to ensure more accurate readings. Another system benefiting from these sensors is Tip Safe, which uses pitch and roll sensors to prevent tip operations taking place at an unsafe angle. Meanwhile, the future for the industry is fully autonomous vehicles, though implementation will likely come first on sites where labour makes up a large cost base – such as at large mines in Australia. Over time the technology will flow to more and more sites as the economic benefits become clear, believes Kyriacos. “We’re testing it on the large trucks and it makes sense that it will start there first, but it will flow through the industry and it’s going to be really exciting.”
Volvo CE reports good sales of the R60D and R100E to sites in Africa.

adapts transmission gearshift patterns according to varying conditions, for exceptionally low fuel consumption as well as a smooth, consistent ride, says Bennett. “The feedback we have is that the machines are reliable and that the running costs are lower than the competition. Operators also like the R100E because it is simple to operate and has a comfortable and ergonomic cab, which is important when working long shifts.” The hauler also has high productivity, with a body designed for optimum load retention and minimal carry-back, while the best-in-class rimpull and the ability to navigate tough ground conditions and gradients ensure fast cycle times, says Bennett. “Finally, the R100E has been designed to be extremely durable and be easy to maintain. All the components have been rigorously tested under extreme working conditions to achieve industry-leading longevity. The R100E has a low centre of gravity and the weight is distributed evenly across the machine, along with any impacts and structural stresses. Certain features, such as the neutral coast inhibitor, overspeed protection and transmission retainer, help prevent unnecessary wear and tear while lengthening service intervals, lowering maintenance costs and increasing uptime.” The E-Series rigid haulers have a host of new safety features, including structural stability and drivetrain features such as overspeed protection, neutral coast inhibitor and speed limit settings, as well as secondary brake system, uncontrolled movement inhibitor, service and service lockout switches – though many competitors have similar features, notes Bennett. Looking to the market and Volvo CE’s service support, Bennett notes that customers in Africa generally like to keep rigid haulers running for long life periods. “When demand for commodities is strong, opportunities for new sales arise as mines increase output targets in short timescales. The five R100E haulers recently sold to a mine in Zambia is an example of this. Some new machine customers
46
require minimum 20,000-hour support contracts from Volvo CE. Those with remote locations often require dealers to hold parts on-site with engineers to hand, and in some cases a dealer workshop is required on site to maximise output.” Looking to the role that OEMs can play in helping site managers optimise productivity, he points to Site Simulation, a useful consultancy tool that demonstrates fleet size and haul route organisation. “By modelling a customer’s site, Volvo CE can calculate the optimum number and capacity of machines and driving routes to minimise traffic and distances travelled on-site, as well as unnecessary fuel consumption and emissions through idling.” Another important tool for improving efficiency on-site is operator training. Highly skilled operators complete tasks with greater speed, accuracy and awareness of safety, while consuming less fuel and minimising wear on their machine. An internal Volvo CE study of 80 operators ranging from beginner to professional found that training has a significant impact on tonne per hour and ton per litre performance, says Bennett. “The results showed a difference of up to 30% in fuel consumption, even among the professionals.” To establish the right type of training for a customer, Volvo CE carries out an initial assessment and then recommends options ranging from basic to advanced. The training may take place on real machines or on simulators, which may be located at dealer premises or installed in shipping containers at the customer’s site, he explains. “In general, Volvo CE will bundle packages of services in order to support customers in achieving their goals, which could be to boost productivity, reduce operational cost or lower CO2 emissions on-site. Whatever their goal, Volvo CE listens to customers’ pain points and seeks to understand the factors impacting the performance of their operations before making recommendations for a convenient all-in-one solution to meet their targets,” he concludes..

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY
DEUTZ JOINS eFUEL ALLIANCE Engine manufacturer Deutz has joined the eFuel Alliance, and in doing so taken another important step forward in its sustainability strategy. The organization represents the interests of companies involved in producing synthetic fuels from renewable energies on an industrial scale. Its mission is to drive forward the production of e-fuels as an alternative to conventional fuels, help them to become broadly accepted, and thus contribute to the protection of the climate. Deutz will mainly represent the off-highway segment in the initiative. E-fuels are synthetic fuels that are made on a renewable basis from water and carbon dioxide (CO2). The type of fuel used by an engine determines its emissions characteristics. By switching to biofuels or gas, the amount of pollutants and CO2 that the engine emits can be dramatically reduced, even to the point of making it fully carbon neutral. Because of the heavy-duty nature of the applications and the long hours they are in use, commercial vehicles, tractors, and construction equipment need a fuel with a high energy density and rapid refueling. This is where e-fuels have a clear und advantage over purely electric drives. Not only are they easy
to transport, but refueling can be done quickly using existing, globally available infrastructure. In August, Deutz unveiled its first purely hydrogen-powered engine for off-highway applications, paving the way for zeroemission operation in this segment. The six-cylinder engine is set to go into series production in 2024..

GROUND-BREAKING INNOVATION
VOLVO CE UNVEILS CX01 SINGLE-DRUM ASPHALT COMPACTOR CONCEPT As a part of its continuous pursuit of ground-breaking machine innovation, Volvo Construction Equipment unveiled its CX01 single-drum asphalt compactor concept at The Utility Expo in Louisville, Kentucky. The CX01 concept utilizes one vibratory asphalt compactor drum that’s actually two independent halves (called a split-drum) kept upright by a self-balancing control system. Capable of being operated either by remote-control or entirely autonomously, the machine is also fitted with both a diesel engine and an energy storage system, making it a flexible electric hybrid solution. It can be operated in diesel-only, hybrid or fully electric modes. Proving Volvo CE’s capacity for innovation across a variety of segments, this concept machine is the latest in the Concept Lab family of prototype machines that push the boundaries of conventional construction equipment. The CX01 concept provides an opportunity to fundamentally rethink the paving process to address customer needs, both improving the conditions for the operator and increasing
productivity. By redesigning the compactors themselves, the operator is removed from the unit - reducing exposure to vibration, noise, dust and other associated environmental conditions - and freed up to autonomously control a fleet of CX units working together to compact asphalt surfaces. The CX01 can be matched with Volvo’s existing Co-Pilot system so that all work can be handled remotely via a touchscreen interface. In addition, it uses GPS position tracking to monitor job performance and help customers better hit their productivity targets..

REDUCED FUEL CONSUMPTION
SUPEREFFICIENT HYDROGEN ENGINES
MAGNI’S NEW RANGE OF AC AERIAL PLATFORMS
HYDROGEN POWERED JCB LOADALL UNVEILED JCB is investing £100m on a project to produce superefficient hydrogen engines. A team of 100 engineers is already working on the new development with the recruitment of up to 50 more engineers under way as JCB targets the end of 2022 for the first machines to be available for sale to customers. The wraps have already come off a prototype hydrogen powered JCB backhoe loader and a second JCB machine - a Loadall telescopic handler - was unveiled at a central London event attended by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. JCB is a world market leader for both backhoe loaders and telescopic handlers.
Magni introduced the new AC scissor range to its already extensive offer of aerial platforms. There are 9 new models with lifting heights from 8 to 16 metres and lifting capacities from 230 to 540 kg. The Magni AC engines reduce fuel consumption and require minimal maintenance, making them even more efficient. The simple, robust and durable structure is less subject to wear and tear. The fully sealed IP67 certified AC system ensures improved water and dust proofing. Compared to previous models, the maximum travel speed has been increased by an average of around 30% to 5.0 km/h. These platforms are equipped with efficient AGM batteries, allowing triple recharge cycles and therefore a longer service life. They are recommended for those who use multiple applications and electronic tools, or who need total control over starting and powering. The main advantages of these batteries include watertightness, tilt tolerance, vibration resistance and high safety. The Magni AC platforms have an improved control interface as they feature a real-time machine status monitor to reduce the time taken to resolve errors. This display also allows to customize some controls. Internal temperature and speed sensors monitor every aspect of the machine in real time, improving overall safety.
JCB’s emergence as a leader in zero-emission hydrogen technology comes as governments around the world unveil strategies to develop the infrastructure needed to support the use of hydrogen to drive down CO2 emissions. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “Great British manufacturers like JCB are developing innovative solutions to slash greenhouse emissions and advance the UK’s green industrial revolution. It was fantastic to see JCB’s super-efficient hydrogen engines, which could overhaul UK manufacturing, help us to rapidly reach our climate targets and ramp up the UK’s hydrogen economy – an exciting area that will be essential to tackling climate change, creating new jobs and attracting investment.” JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “We are investing in hydrogen as we don’t see electric being the all-round solution, particularly not for our industry because it can only be used to power smaller machines. It does mean we will carry on making engines, but they will be superefficient, affordable, high-tech hydrogen motors with zero CO2 emissions, which can be brought to market quickly using our existing supply base.”.
These platforms are equipped with fold-down guardrails to allow greater accessibility for entering, loading, and unloading the platform in situations where space is limited. Finally, non-marking tyres come standard on all models, do not leave marks on the floor and perform an excellent grip. In 2022, Magni will implement new upgrades to the previous ES0607DC and ES0708DC models..

FLEXIBILITY
NEW GENERATION OF LARGE COLD PLANERS FROM BOMAG be viewed seamlessly with the camera system. The control platform itself can be moved steplessly by up to 200mm, allowing the operator to easily keep an eye on the right cutting edge and the side plate. The slim construction enables a tight turning radius of only 1.7m, resulting in high flexibility and manoeuvrability. Combined with the latest generation of conveyor belts featuring a 130-degree swivel angle, the planer with the smallest milling radius in the 2-metre class makes loading the truck a simple task, even when milling in mini-roundabouts. BOMAG launched its new BM/65 series of cold planers in early September 2021. With a CECE operating weight of only 27 tonnes, the BM 2000/65 is the lightest planer currently available in the 2-metre class. Its low weight achieved by the special lightweight design and the shorter conveyor belt now make the planers even more flexible to use. When it comes to efficiency, ease of operation and work safety, the new generation of planers features numerous innovative details. The productivity of a cold planer depends heavily on the perfect interaction of all components. The operator is at the centre of the process and has to confidently monitor everything from the control station – from the cutting edge to the conveyor belt. In the new BM/65, an unobstructed view has become an essential part of the construction: The front contour’s slim design and the position of the operator’s platform make it easier to work precisely and safely. The flat rear profile optimised for visibility also increases safety when manoeuvring. The obscured area behind the machine can
The 640hp engine, which complies with Stage V and TIER 4f emission standards, is perfectly matched to the application with a milling gear tailored to the characteristics of the sixcylinder in-line engine. Together with the likewise optimised conveyor belt operation, this means that construction companies can count on consistently low operating costs with the new generation of BOMAG planers in their machine fleet. Equipped with the Ion Dust Shield, the BM/65 renders fine dust particles with a grain size of less than 10 µm harmless. This is made possible by the innovative Ion Dust Shield technology: It transforms fine dust particles by means of electrical charging into harmless coarse dust that can be easily removed. This has been proven to reduce particulate matter by 80%, thus ensuring significantly cleaner air and protecting crews, residents, and passers-by. As a result, the Ion Dust Shield also contributes to significantly lower fine dust pollution during milling in the 2-metre class. The improved sealing and low-wear design also made it possible to create a particularly low-dust working environment for the operator..

AN Trucks’ new TG range is proving to be quite the trailblazer in the trucking industry globally and in the MEA region. MAN is known for reliability and efficiency and these characteristics remain prominent in the new range. The TG trucks are equipped with an engine that delivers even better fuel efficiency than before. The response from the European market, which has experienced the new range for a longer time than the Middle East, is overwhelming. The fuel efficiency percentage being reported is from 8 to 10% as compared to MAN’s previous models. Customer feedback (as well as regulatory requirements) was a major component in the design of these new trucks. “We met with customers from across the world to understand their specific requirements,” says Jöerg Mommertz, Senior Vice President, Head of Sales Area MEA and Latin America and Managing Director, MAN Trucks & Bus. The idea was to develop a truck that retains its relevance beyond the initial years after its launch and which can be upgraded periodically as per demands. “Our focus was to deliver robust solutions that can perform consistently over their typical operating life,” says Mommertz. There is also impeccable attention to detail that went into the new design that is reflected in the features that offer convenience and safety. For example, there is an anti-slip step that has been designed to prevent mishaps and injuries during regular operations. Then there is a control panel on the driver door that provides ease of access and convenience. “A well-rested driver can drive safely and deliver more efficiently than before. Additionally, thanks to ingenious solutions by engineers at MAN, the truck can carry more payload. This means that our customers now have the opportunity to increase their earnings with each trip,” continues Mommertz.
Driver experience The driver experience is front and centre in this new truck. “The driver was one of the four focus areas in the development of our new truck range. It is also a key communication pillar at MAN – Excellent Driver Fit. The demands and needs were clear,” continues Mommertz. The driver workspace needed to become more ergonomic so it could provide enhanced comfort, a wider field of vision, easy access to the control panel, a clear display panel, and an improved area for rest/sleeping. “Of course, there were inputs on some other important aspects such as an efficient air-conditioning system and even a charging port for electronic devices. We took care of all these requirements, and then some more,” he adds. Another product offering connected to driver comfort is MAN’s ProfiDrive programme. The MAN ProfiDrive offers additional targeted and practice-oriented training to help drivers with efficient and safer driving methods, making good drivers even better.

PRODUCT NEWS - PROFILE
One size does not fit all As part of MAN’s customer-centric approach, along with the new TG trucks, they have also deployed new order systems that provide a high level of granularity. Customers can choose options ranging from the key aggregates (engine, gearbox, axle, etc.) to the tyres and cabs, and the smallest convenience features in the vehicle. Besides the trucks, MAN also has customised solutions in after sales such as MAN Extended Warranty, MAN Service Contract and MAN ProfiDrive. These can be adapted to specific customer requirements and can help maintain the peak performance of the vehicles.
Safety Safety remains at the core of all product development programmes at MAN. “We focus on two aspects of safety – features in the product (active and passive systems), and patterns and behaviors of drivers at the wheel,” explains Mommertz. Customers can get safety features such as the MAN Lane Departure Warning System, which assists the driver with accurate lane keeping. If the truck touches the lane markings or leaves the lane without an activated turn indicator, an acoustic signal will sound. The emergency brake assist system warns the driver of an impending collision and in an emergency automatically initiates a braking procedure. Then these are the ubiquitous seat belts and airbags. “But for us, safety is not just a feature in our vehicles. MAN also offers solutions that can help enhance safety. The MAN EcoStyle telematics provides data that can be used to improve driving patterns and behaviors,” adds Mommertz.
Regional demand The demand for trucks in the Middle Eastern and African countries varies based on the applications they are needed for, the operating duty cycles and topographies. “Acceleration in infrastructure and haulage applications are some of the main reasons why customers opt for MAN trucks,” says Mommertz. “For instance, in Africa, heavy/deep mining applications and haulage drive the demand for many MAN

Safety is tremendously important at MAN.
vehicles. Every market that we are in presents a different set of opportunities, and we see a great appetite for the new range,” he adds. Since global and regional economies are still in different stages of recovery from the COVID-19, market sizes and projected sales cannot be assigned just yet.
The truck of the future Future tech for trucks can be categorised into two sections. One is electrification, which is rapidly gaining momentum. MAN is very active in this area and already offers electric vans, trucks and buses for commercial operations. “The demand is consistently increasing with more customers opting for our e-mobility solutions. The development in this area is ultimately to achieve zero-emission targets in many countries,” says Mommertz. The second is autonomous driving. “Here at MAN, we have taken initial steps with the successful pilot of its driverless truck at Hamburg port. The possibility of adoption of autonomous vehicles for operations in contained areas such as ports, is quite high. However, it is still early to predict the deployment of this technology on a larger scale in regular traffic areas,” he opines.
International Truck of the Year Award 2021 MAN’s top of the line truck from the TG range - the TGX - won the International Truck of the Year 2021 earlier this year. Top points that made the TGX the winner was comfort, safety, fuel efficiency, connectivity, an advanced service portfolio, its human-machine interface and improved cab aerodynamics..
