The Plastics Industry has a unique opportunity. July 8, 2013, The Plastics Industry will be addressed by the Shadow Minister for Manufacturing -- Ms. Sophie Mirabella. Derek Lark, Executive Director, Industry Capability Network, will also address the dinner with information how ICN brings Australian buyers & suppliers together for a comprehensive range of projects. The opportunity to have the Shadow Minister for Manufacturing "captive" for 2-3 hours & be exposed to the plastics industry is a not to be missed opportunity. In addition to hearing first hand the coalitions plans, if they form Government after the September 14 election, we will have the opportunity to ask a range of questions relevant to our industry. A strong showing with a good attendance will increase the perception of the plastics industry. The plastics industry employs approximately the same number as the automotive industry. An interesting challenge is to name an industry that does not in some way require plastic. The plastics industry will continue to grow globally -- maybe the building blocks for plastic polymers will change as biopolymers are developed. The challenge for Australia is to be a part of the global growth of plastics products & components. We have considerable infrastructure, unfortunately currently under utilised. The dinner with the Shadow Minister should be the start of an increased exposure for the industry to Canberra. Discussions and planning is underway to create the Plastics Industry Development Group. The objective will be for the industry, via the PIDG, to identify opportunities for the industry. Opportunities that will have the potential to become an important part of the global plastics supply chain. Objective - make use of the current under utilised facilities within the industry. The projects can be presented to Canberra with the objective to obtain funding & support for the projects. MAS Cascade Compounding Recycling System The MAS Cascade Compounding Recycling System is taking Europe and the UK by storm. Since its release in 2011, the MAS Extrusion system including CDF filter has transformed the recompounding industry with over 40 lines now in production, 6 lines with capacities up to 1800kg/hr already ordered prior to May this year. The unique features of low polymer residence time, low shear, excellent purity and homogenisation, and all with up to 30% low energy consumption than conventional extruders, is being embraced by major plastics reprocessors . With a range of lines with 6 extruder sizes, 45mm – 93mm, through puts from 200kg/hr upto 1800kg/hr are available for recompounding recycled plastics including flake with additives and fillers if required. Interestingly the MAS conical co-rotating twin screw extruder with its patented vented feeding process is now the preferred extruder for PET sheet lines from Wellex, Starlinger Viscotec and SML. From films to rigid packaging New variants of the compostable plastic ecovio

Thermoformable version for food trays Injection molding grade for complex and high quality packaging BASF has once again added variants to its range of the compostable and partially bio-based plastic ecovio®. The ecovio® T2308 is now available for the processing method of thermoforming. For injection molding the company offers the new ecovio® IS1335 grade. So far, the ecovio grades that have made their mark on the market are those for the extrusion sector, in other words, for producing films that can then be further processed into bags as well as mulch film. Since the packaging sector is displaying a growing interest in certified compostable plastics, BASF has now augmented its product line by new grades intended for two other significant processing technologies. Both of these products are now available in commercial quantities. They consist predominantly of renewable raw materials and lend themselves well for being dyed. For thermoforming trays and cups Thermoformed trays and cups can now be made with ecovio T2308. This plastic exhibits similar mechanical properties to those of amorphous PET, but it differs from this conventional thermoforming material by virtue of its compostability and its high content of renewable resources (polylactic acid). The content of ecoflex®, which is BASF’s compostable polyester, accounts for the fact that the material is not too stiff or too brittle. As a result, thermoformed trays and cups are not damaged during transportation and storage. The ecoflex component also ensures a balanced stiffness-to-strength ratio and sufficient low-temperature impact strength. The processing window for ecovio T, between 80°C and 120°C [176°F and 248°F], is very broad in comparison to other plastics. Processing can be carried out on conventional flatfilm installations and at the processing speeds that are typical for thermoforming. Like all ecovio grades, it also complies with the stipulations for products that come into contact with food. The material is translucent and can be adequately sealed with cover films. For injection molding complex and high-quality packaging The second novelty in the ecovio product line, namely, the injection-molding grade ecovio IS1335, also offers good stiffness. It can be processed using single-cavity or multi-cavity molds that are equipped with or without hot runners. This material exhibits moderate flowing characteristics and is dimensionally stable under heat up to 55°C [131°F]. This variant lends itself for thin-walled, complex and high-quality packaging, which should preferably be manufactured by injection molding and should be compostable. With an eye towards differentiating the product on the market, the product can also be decorated employing in-mold labeling. !

In cooperation with independent institutes, BASF has conducted experiments on the compostability of injection-molded test specimens. Results show that, depending on the application, injection-molded products made of ecovio IS1335 having wall thicknesses of as much as 1.1 mm degrade in accordance with the EN 13432 standard for compostable packaging. The compostable plastic ecovio BASF has been offering ecovio速, the completely compostable plastic according to DIN standard EN 13432 for biodegradable packaging, since 2006. For many years now, BASF has been working closely together with plastic processors, brand owners, supermarkets as well as environmental associations and numerous waste-disposal companies such as composting operations, in order to test and optimize the properties of ecovio. Thanks to the outcome of these joint endeavors and research work, BASF can now offer ecovio, a plastic that is not only completely compostable according to the applicable international standards, but that also has a high content of renewable raw materials and that nevertheless is sufficiently sturdy to allow the production of tear-resistant bags, mulch films, coated paper, trays and cups.

Anatomy Of A Composite-Heavy Jetliner

Airbus’s fanfare a few weeks ago when the first completed A350 XWB widebody jetliner came out of the paint shop was mostly a PR event. At the time, the two things the company announced were that the plane had received its final paint job, and ground tests were about to begin, with flight tests expected some time this summer. This gave us an excuse to check up on the progress of this record-breaking aircraft’s production. The A350 XWB’s airframe consists of a bigger proportion of carbon-fiber-reinforced composite structures than any other commercial jet to date: over 53 percent by weight. Carbon fiber composite leader Hexcel is supplying all of the carbon-fiber composites, both prepreg and fibers, used in the plane’s primary structures. According to a video made by the company, these include fuselage panels and barrel, wing upper and lower covers, wing spars, center wing box, keel beam, main landing gear door and bay, and the vertical and horizontal tail plane. But composites are not the only materials story for the aircraft. Titanium and advanced aluminum alloys combine with carbon composites to achieve more than 70 percent of the A350 XWB airframe’s weight in nontraditional materials. This plus a new aerodynamic design are aimed at reducing fuel consumption and operating costs by 25 percent compared to other aircraft in the same category of midsized, widebody, twin-aisle passenger jetliners. This plane has a couple of possible advantages over the problems encountered by its composites-heavy predecessors, the Airbus A380 and Boeing’s problem-child 787. In the first case, the advantage is experience: Airbus’s chief executive Tom Enders admitted at a press briefing last year that the A380′s cracked wings were due in part to not understanding carbon fiber materials and their interface with metals, and not realizing this lack of understanding, as well as a lack of the right design controls... What’s the difference? Degradable bags are commonly mistaken for biodegradable bags. But unlike biodegradable bags, they do not break down into water, carbon dioxide and biomass. A degradable bag is still a petroleum-based plastic bag that break down into smaller pieces. It must be exposed to sunlight or heat for extended periods of time to decompose. If these bags are buried in landfill, they do not disintegrate.

Large Diameter Oriented PVC Pipes Now Available in Australia - Report by Think Pipes. Think PVC !

The new release of oriented PVC pressure pipe (PVC-O) pipe up to 800 mm diameter make them the best solution for medium and high pressure networks for potable water supply, sewer rising mains, recycled water systems, irrigation systems and pumping systems. Unplasticised (PVC-U) and Modified (PVC-M) pressure pipes have been available in Australia in diameters up 630mm for a number of years, however their relatively thick walls and maximum pressure rating of 18 Bar reduced their competitiveness against traditional non-plastic pressure pipes. The advances in manufacturing technology by Spanish company Molecor have enabled thinner walled PVC-O to be manufactured up to 800mm diameter, with pressure ratings up to 25 Bar, delivering a pipe that is very competitive in both manufactured and installed cost against alternative materials. Even larger diameters are now under investigation. PVC-O pipe up to 630mm diameter is supplied in Australia by Promains. GUANGZHOU, CHINA – The pace of growth may have slowed a bit, but the massive Chinaplas show just keeps rolling on. The four-day show's 114,000 attendees (excluding more than 40,000 exhibitor staff and media) represented an increase of nearly 4 percent over the 109,858 attendees from 140 countries that attended the April 2012 show in Shanghai. The show's aisles swelled with more than 40,000 visitors on May 21, the event's second day, and thinned to about 10,800 on the final day, whose closing hour was extended to 5 pm from the previous mid-afternoon time. The visitor total fell a bit short of pre-show estimates of about 120,000. But still, Stanley Chu, chairman of the show's Hong Kong-based owner and organizer, Adsale Exhibitions Services Ltd., said he was extremely pleased with the outcome, noting numerous comments from exhibitors about the high quality of the attendees. The international component of Chinaplas also continues to grow, with visitors from outside China increasing to 27 percent of the 2013 total, up from 25 percent at the previous Shanghai show. As previously reported, in terms of exhibit space, the 220,000 square meters of gross space at this year's Guangzhou event was 22 percent larger than 180,000 square meters the last time it was held in that south China city, in 2011. It also represented a 4.7 percent increase over the previous year's 210,000 square meters (2.26 million square feet) in Shanghai. Adsale said it counts attendees once for each day they attend.

Congratulations to the APPMA from the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) on reaching the 30th Year milestone. The value the APPMA has brought to the Australian Packaging Industry over these years is immense and nothing displays this better than the quality of AUSPACK PLUS. 30 years ago, Australia was different. At this Technical Forum, the speakers will present topics on the importance of packaging as a strategic social, economic and commercial tool through the circumstances of their communities. This will provide diverse and dynamic views on global packaging trends for the AIP members. The finale of the day will be the WorldStar Pakaging Awards dinner where winners from around the world who will be recognised for their creative packaging. I encourage all packaging technologists to attend and witness what it is required to be among the world’s best. The standard is high but the AIP encourages its members to stand up and submit their designs in future. You will be pleasantly surprised how good you are. The AIP strives to be relevant to its members and the demands of the Australian Packaging Industry. Winning concepts showcased upon the occasion of the Geneva International Motor Show

An international jury judges entries from all over the world The three best design concepts for car seats from the competition titled “sit down. move.” were presented by BASF on March 5 at the accompanying program to the Geneva International Motor Show. The global winner chosen by the jury was Song Wei Teo of the University of Coventry in Great Britain. The two further winners were Joonyoung Kim of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan, United States, and Pantila Debhakam of the design agency shakes bkk of Bangkok, Thailand. Renowned industrial and automotive designers Konstantin Grcic, Ken Kiyoyuki Okuyama and Dave Lyon, together with the three BASF members of the jury, evaluated more than 170 entries from 33 countries in order to select the best studies.

Three winning entries – plus three special mentions Three novel concepts relating to the clever utilization of BASF materials greatly impressed the panel of experts. “Song Wei Teo’s extraordinary design of a car seat made in just a single piece using lightweight materials won us over,” stated the jury in explaining its choice of the winning entry. Aside from receiving the trophy created by staff of the designfabrik®, the global winner was awarded a prize money of 6000 euros. The two further winners received 3000 euros each. When this international contest was announced in September of 2012, designers from all over the world were called upon to develop car seats with an eye towards such aspects as comfort, ergonomics, safety and weight. “We will manufacture prototypes of the three main winning concepts and present them to our customers as well as to other interested parties at various events,” explains Eva Höfli, BASF designer and contest coordinator. Designing car seats with plastic The competition “sit down. move.” is a joint project of BASF’s global seat competence team together with the designfabrik®, which assists designers in selecting materials, colors and surfaces as well as in constructing innovative products. The assortment of available materials includes not only thermoplastics such as Ultramid® (PA), thermoplastic polyurethanes such as Elastollan®, foams based on expanded polypropylene (Neopolen®) and aromatic polyurethane (Elastoflex® W) but also the transfer coating technology Steron®, binders for natural fibers (Acrodur®) and Catamold®, BASF’s powder injection technology. From mining boom to dining room Food will be Australia's next great export opportunity and economic reforms need to be implemented now to reap the bene:its of Asia's future demand for food, says Visy lndustries executive chairman, Anthony Pratt. The billionaire packaging and recycling magnate delivered his vision for Australia's agriculture sector at The Australian and The Wall Street Journal's inaugural Global Food Forum in Melbourne in mid-­‐ April. According to Pratt, there is the potential for Australia to quadruple its food exports to a value of $2 trillion and feed 200 million people in the process. A US government-­‐funded study released in April found that food production will need to rise by 60 percent by 2050 just to keep pace with expected global population increases and changing demands. A major part of this increased demand will be from Asia where the middle class is forecast to grow from 500 million to three billion consumers over the coming decades. Australia is ideally placed near Asia and, given demographic forecasts, will have almost 20 times more arable land per capita than China, lndia and lndonesia. So, as Pratt sees it, expanding food production and increasing exports will be Australia's "greatest responsibility and opportunity in the 21st century." He said that competition laws will need to be changed to allow consolidation among rural companies and also suggested suspension of payroll tax for food manufacturers and government incentives for innovation in agriculture. Pratt contrasted the government assistance offered to the automotive and aqricultural sectors; as well as the level of media and community concern devoted to each sector. He said "The food industry decline has had a bigger impact than the close-­‐down of car factories. The irony is that we have a competitive advantage in food manufacture.
