Helping exporters gain access to working capital

EFIC and HSBC sign up to help exporters gain access to working capital 22 September 2011 HSBC Bank Australia and Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC) today announced the signing of a Master Working Capital Guarantee Facility to help Australian exporters gain additional working capital to finance export contracts. For companies expanding into international markets, optimising cash flow is crucial to fuelling their business growth. “The new arrangement with EFIC will enable HSBC to further assist our customers with their export finance requirements.” Alex Fernandez, EFIC’s Head of Alliance and Product, SME and Mid-Market explains that the arrangement with HSBC is another way EFIC can support Australian businesses growing their export trade, “As the Australian Government’s export credit agency, we can provide financial support to exporters in a variety of ways to suit the specific business requirements. “This arrangement with HSBC can help Australian businesses to finance their export contracts and keep growing their businesses internationally.” HSBC combines its international scale and connectivity along with dedicated customer relationship teams throughout Australia to create banking solutions for companies involved in importing and exporting by leveraging their trade cycles with products like trade finance, bonding/guarantee requirements, debtor finance and supply chain financing to fund their export growth. EFIC’s export working capital guarantee is a flexible guarantee which can support a single export contract or many export contracts with different buyers. Generally, the guarantee is for a minimum of $500,000. What sets Plastool apart in a competitive and ever changing environment? Checkout how some of our valued clients like to put it: “We recently required, urgently, milled 3D models, and the time frames were critical. So much so, that had they not been met, our client would have been in real trouble. We engaged Plastool, assured by our past dealings and your reputation that we could relax. We were right. You delivered yet again.”

Peter Gillespie, Modelling & Prototyping Manager, EDAG Australia Pty Ltd “Plastool are a family business run by Gary and Andrew Down, who take pride in their work. I’ve been dealing with Plastool for 10+ years and have found them highly ethical and honest. The Plastool team make my job easy by offering a professional service that delivers high quality tools, on time and at an affordable price.”

Aziz Haddad, Technical Manager Packaging, Viscount Plastics Pty Ltd “It has now been a couple of months since we received the fi nal delivery of product to complete our new standard Device range and all I can say is wow! The Whole Range looks and is performing well beyond our expectations. It really is amazing when I think back to when I first approached Plastool with our hand crafted products and my non-engineer approach to developing easier production methods just how far we have come. Your assistance with not only the technical development and highest quality final mould production but also sourcing a moulder with the flexibility to trial and then produce our unique product has been extremely valuable in what for us is new and unfamiliar territory.”

David Coull, Managing Director, The Orthotic Laboratory “Willow has had an enduring commercial relationship with Plastool for over 25 years. During this time Plastool has made many precision injection moulding tools to run in our machines from 100 tonnes up to 1300 tonnes. They have also made various post moulding jigs and manufacturing aides. Their quality and workmanship is of the highest order. Plastool is a preferred toolmaker to Willow.”

Costly Markeng Mistakes – Plug the Holes Now By Scott Bywater Today I want to talk about one of the misunderstood marketing mistakes business owners make without even knowing it. Think of it like this: How hard is it to fill a bucket with holes in it? Very hard, right? Virtually impossible. You have to keep the tap on forever to keep that bucket full. And it’s the same with your business. Most businesses make lots of marketing mistakes which expose their bucket to heaps of holes… Marketing Mistake #1: They don’t know why their customers leave them. Marketing Mistake #2: They don’t know how to get back lost customers. Marketing Mistake #3: They get a 1% conversion on their web site when they could get a 2% conversion with a bit of tweaking. Marketing Mistake #4: They have terrible ways of answering the phone which burns customers. Marketing Mistake #5: They get a lead, make one follow up call and then let the customer go – rather than setting up a follow up sequence. So today, ask yourself… What holes does my business have – And then set about plugging those leaks, because these marketing mistakes – if you ignore them – will cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars.

Do you want to learn the easiest way to get more customers fast? Leading advertising copywriter, Scott Bywater, has just completed his brand new guide "7 Ways to Get More Customers" where he outline everything so it's as easy as 1, 2... 3. Want to maximise your profit....? .... optimise your design first. Extracting the maximum profit from your product CANNOT be achieved by sourcing the cheapest material, cheapest tooling, cheapest labour and cheapest design.

Traditional manufacturing favours a ‘throw-it-over-the-wall’ approach to designing a product. Typically a company will employ the cheapest designer to create the styling, then have an engineer ‘make it work’, then have it tooled and manufactured by the lowest tender – using the cheapest material that ‘gets it over the line’, of course.

http://www.designprofit.com

Beating down the supplier at each step for the cheapest price must result in the best profit – right? Although the example above sounds ludicrous when presented in this manner, this is more often than not the case when new products are brought to market. It can be simply because this is the accepted practice within the company at the time, or it may be through a lack of knowledge of where to find partners that can offer a broader service.

... design casts the longest shadow.... Whether or not you agree with the specific figures quoted above, it is clear that once a design is locked in place your ability to influence profit is substantially reduced. It is still possible to fine tune your outgoings, but there is no doubt that design casts the longest shadow.

... simulation & testing must be tools-of-trade .... An alternative method, being successfully used by astute Australian manufacturers to maximise their profits, involves taking a deep breath before starting and understanding the importance of getting the design as good as it can be before proceeding any further. To optimise a design in this manner it is vitally important to have in-house simulation software, correlated to real world physical testing for ultimate accuracy. They must also be able to be applied iteratively, until the product performs exactly as required with minimal cost implications. Sandy Munro, of Munro & Associates, is a long-time advocate of getting the design correct at the start of the process.

‘Costs and risks associated with a product must be evaluated and if possible, eliminated, before product engineering proceeds. The real threat to profit in an unanalysed design is not what you know you don’t know, but what you don’t know you don’t know.’

Offering world’s-best-practice analysis services to local industry for over 25 years, APS Innovations Pty Ltd in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs is at the forefront of optimised product design. Concurrent, in-house process simulation and correlation via their on-site testing laboratory as their tools-of-trade, give their clients the ability to compete on a world-wide stage – and most importantly, maximise their profit.

Despite the fact that typically 5% of total cost is associated with product design, as Munro & Associates note on their website, ‘design locks in 70% of your total accounted cost’.

25 years & going strong.... APS Innovations is known by virtually everybody involved in the local plastics industry as being a stalwart of design & development expertise over the last 25 years. Like so many other stories of companies in their third decade of business APS started from humble beginnings; formed by John Petschel back in May 1986 to fill a services gap in the local plastics industry, it grew from John’s involvement developing local mould flow simulation software. Facilities were moved in 1991 to the current Ferntree Gully premises in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, allowing further expansion. Testing laboratory facilities were added, allowing direct correlation of physical data with the analysis software for ultimate simulation accuracy. In-house Industrial Designers were introduced to complement existing Mechanical, Manufacturing & Polymer Engineers, as were prototyping workshop facilities. The name change from APS Plastics to APS Innovations occurred in 2007, coinciding with two additional directors being appointed (Mark Turner & Toby Hartley), and as an indicator of the broader offerings APS had developed beyond the bespoke services beginnings. The business now offers complete end-to-end product development, including tooling and manufacturing lines, often commissioning and manning the lines in early production until full hand-over to their clients. th

Recent 25 celebrations were held at local restaurant Nelson 382 on Burwood Highway, and were well attended by industry associates, ex-employees, partners, suppliers and clients past and present. For John and the other team members, it was a great feeling to have so many well-wishers join APS on the night to wish them success for the future. It was also a great reminder that the success of APS over the last 25 years has been built on such strong relationships, and shall continue to grow based on these and many new ones.

Conductive Polymers New Revolution

The concept of conductive polymers isn’t new. Still regarded as relatively novel products, their applications tend to be overlooked. Not any more. The BPF is hosting a unique 1 day seminar on 2nd November 2011, entitled ‘An introduction to Conductive Polymers’ which will bring together a number of experts, both from academia and from industry, to increase awareness in industry of the benefits of conductive polymers and to better understand their processing parameters and the applications in which they are used. Conductive Polymers can be developed by compounding thermoplastics with electrically conductive materials such as carbon or steel fibres or carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and other additives to increase their dispersion into the polymeric matrix. The result gives conductive properties to some plastics, normally isolators. The advantages of choosing a conductive plastic over traditional products such as metal are manifold, including ease of fabrication, weight savings achievable and cost of manufacture. Indeed, the compounding process allows for specific ‘grades’ of conductivity to be achieved (from very low to very high) – ranges which may not be achievable with metals. This freedom of formulation allows compounders to create material tailored to exacting customer requirements covering all the major plastic properties, such as: mechanical, thermal and especially electrical. Research carried out by AIMPLAS – a Spanish Centre for Innovation and Technology – shows that conductive fillers can be successfully compounded into any thermoplastic.
