AUSPLAS. PLASTICS. MACHINERY, MATERIALS, METHODS. In 2011 Ausplas, Australia’s national trade show for the plastics processing industry will break with tradition. Ausplas has been held in October every three years since 1987, but this year moves into a May time frame to line up with the Austech and National Manufacturing Week events. The three trade exhibitions will occupy the entire 30,000 square meters of space at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre presenting what will be Australia’s largest ever dedicated manufacturing industry trade exhibition. This also allows for extensive visitor promotion being now undertaken by the three show managers – an outcome that has been welcomed by the many AUSPLAS exhibitors, traditional and new who represent a strong cross section of processing and ancillary equipment, materials, technology and semi finished products. New this year is the involvement of many suppliers in the plastics fabrication sector. Ausplas will be held in Bays 19 and 20 alongside Austech. There will be no dividing walls with the visitor ID badge for either exhibition allowing admission to all three shows. Visiting hours will also be common for all three events. Visitors can organise their FREE trade ID in advance on line NOW by visiting www.ausplas.com Equipment in Operation A feature of Ausplas has always been the display of plastics processing equipment, in operation under factory conditions. For 2011 the range of processing and ancillary equipment, robotics and automation will be double the number and variety shown in 2008. The number of injection moulding machines alone will be the largest showing since 2002. This year the emphasis is on energy efficiency with energy now being a primary cost and innovations such as ‘in mould labelling’ which will be shown by several exhibitors representing European and Asian suppliers. There will also be many large exhibits of other forms of plastics processing such as extrusion and blow moulding and thermo forming.

Ancillary Equipment and Materials The range and variety of ancillary equipment has also expanded for 2011 and covers the whole range: Blenders, chillers, materials handling systems, silos, granulators, screws, barrels, mixers, controls and monitoring, testing and measuring, labelling and printing .Automation and robotics. There will also be a wide showing of new materials ranging from pigments and master batches through to specialty additives and colorants and the new exotics in space age materials and composites. Recycling The all-important sector of plastics recycling will again feature heavily bringing the latest advances in sorting, separation, washing, re-granulation and re-use of consumer and industrial waste. Fabrication 2011 brings a large increase in the number of exhibits featuring the supply of equipment and know how for the use of plastics in the fabrication sector. These include plastics sheet, rod -shapes and profiles for precision engineering ,semi finished plastics products, 3D ink jet prototyping, ultrasonic welding and hot air tools and butt welding for sheet and pipe and related new technologies for build and repair.

Want a sneak preview of what’s on show? Read on! TASMAN MACHINERY Will exhibit “the world’s best selling all electric injection moulding machine” from Sumitomo Japan. The SE 350 HSZ is a high speed all electric machine with the most energy efficient drive system available today. It will be shown operating with a 3 axis servo driven takeout robot supplied by Yushin, Japan’s largest manufacturer of takeout robots. Tasman will also show Dimension 3D printers which print prototypes from ABS plastic, allowing customers to dramatically reduce ‘time to market’ for new products.

Asian styrene dip despite stronger upstream costs

Spot styrene prices in Asia have lost some ground over the past weeks even as crude oil and naphtha prices raced ahead to reach their highest levels since 2008, as per Chemorbis. Players commented that styrene demand has not been responsive to tightening supplies in the region as existing stock levels have proven high enough to dissuade styrene buyers from purchasing beyond current needs amid ample buffer stocks. Weaker styrene feedstock costs have also had a limiting effect on PS demand inside China. Last week, spot styrene prices ended US$30-45/ton below the previous week’s done deal level on an FOB Korea basis...more

A self-sealing elastic polymer

German researchers have copied the caoutchouc tree`s modus operandi to create a selfsealing elastic polymer. When the caoutchouc tree is damaged, liquid latex containing capsules of the protein hevein escapes from inside it. Those capsules rupture, releasing the hevein, which links the latex particles together and ultimately closes up the wound. The bursting/sealing-microcapsules process has been put to use in human technology such as self healing concrete, electronics, paint and aircraft epoxy resin. Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology loaded microcapsules with the adhesive polyisobutylene, then put those capsules into synthetic caoutchouc sap elastomers....more

An Overnight Sensation? I think not. By Brian Tuohy btuohy@tpg.com.au

In today’s market driven economy there are pretty much three groups: The Pioneers, The Followers, and The Bystanders. The pioneers bring to our attention new technologies, alter mindsets and excite us into action of sorts. Hopefully to purchase or uptake the latest and greatest. The Followers follow on the coattails of The Pioneers with “me too” products or services. The Bystanders just watch and wait for an outcome before making their move. The Pioneers burst onto the scene in any array of products or services. Loyalty programs, television shows, technology, branding, etc. They grab the attention and create a demand, but soon the flavour of the moment has its copy cats. But this doesn’t happen overnight. Years of product development, market assessment and business plans, redesigns, failures and fine tuning occurs before that success happens. So what differentiates a success from a failure? Is it good marketing? Timing to a particular market? A sound product? Something affordable? Or simply something desirable? The reputation of the company launching the product or service? A brand name even? The probability that it is all those things and possibly none of those things. Products, like the iPad are hailed as an overnight sensation, but this technology had been launched and failed previously, even by Apple, who launched the Newton more than a decade ago. So sometimes great ideas have to wait until technology catches up to make it happen.

Sometimes a reliable and consistent product loses out because people tire of it, or they survive because of tradition or preserving the status quo. Despite the appearance of overnight success, honing that occurred before the introduction to

Recently I attended a presentation on a product developed in Australia that has a huge potential for the international market. The discussion included all the redesigns and considerations about all the alternative options available and their cost implications, the life expectancy of the product, etc., the evaluations of materials and additives and the lead time and expenses for the evaluations. And despite the significant investments to date, it still hasn’t been commercialised. But if we are to believe what was presented, when it is ready for market, the biggest issue will be the inability to have the product meet market demand within a reasonable timeframe. So will this demand make this product a success? I believe that it will be successful. Does it make it an overnight success? I don't think so.

Raj will help PlastiComp further evolve its advanced materials and processes, particularly Pushtrusion Direct Long Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic (D-LFT) technology and Complet, Long-Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic (LFT) pellet technology. “I am very pleased to be part of PlastiComp because of its intellectual portfolio in advanced engineering plastics that yields superior material properties well suited to industrial production,” said Mathur. “PlastiComp also has a global outreach that is vital for strong business growth and positions the company as a leader in the industry.” Mathur has over 18 years experience in strategic programme and product management, with ten of those years focused on international markets and development. He has served as consultant and manager for key industry leaders, including: Imation Corporation, Conoco and HITCO Carbon Composites. Mathur received his Bachelor degree in Metallurgical Engineering and his Master and PhD degrees in Materials Science and Engineering. He also holds an Executive MBA degree from Rotterdam School of Management and has four patents in the Aerospace, Automotive, Chemical, Building & Construction, and Semiconductor industries. He was awarded the Morton S. Traum Award for Best Research at the Doctoral Level.

The Short Scoop on Long Fiber Thermoplastics (LFT) The use of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites plays an integral role in the challenging but highly rewarding task of replacing various costly metal fabrication techniques such as Die Casting. Long Fibre Thermoplastic (LFT) composites coupled with best moulding practices and parts engineering can close the performance gap between the more traditional Short Fibre Thermoplastic (SFT) composites and their metal counterparts. Complex part geometries make continuous fibre reinforcement or placement difficult or near impossible in all but simple, rectilinear, part geometries. Therefore, the reinforcing fibres used are chopped and randomly distributed in the polymer matrix to fill the part shape. However, these SFT’s offer only a fraction of the strength of continuous reinforcement. LFT composites are a means to approach the original promise of continuous fiber-reinforcement. Since fibre-reinforcement is inherently anisotropic, fibre-orientation must be tailored to match load direction. Furthermore, the process of LFT injection moulding differs from standard SFT techniques and, if considered correctly, allows LFT composites to reach their potential. Several examples of real parts and designs in various industrial sectors are shared to highlight these considerations. Since manufacturability is often the first and last concern, the successful injection-moulding of LFT composite parts is described, including modern tools for part and mold design.

Online Training Resources for the Plastics Industry Some very interesting and important things are happening in the field of interactive, computer – delivered training resources for our industry. A Routsis Associates of Massachusetts USA are major innovators, and players in the field. The business was started by a then very young engineer with big ideas, Andy Routsis, 20 years ago. Andy began his professional life on the production floor, proceeding to ownership of a tooling shop, selling and rebuilding moulding machines. Currently, he is very active in the industry as a hands-on engineer, trainer, and adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, Department of Engineering. Andy was the first to develop CD ROM - based training resources for our industry back in the mid 90’s, with what were at the time unique, ‘state of the art’ virtual reality graphics, and video. A number of Australian companies and training institutions found the value of ARA programs, and the quality of the 3D graphics improved enormously with the growth in computing ‘grunt’. More recently, with the advent of widespread broadband services internationally, the business has exploded, with the focus now very much on eLearning*, rather than CD ROM delivery. In fact ARA say that the resources are currently in use in more than 2,000 organisations in 35 countries, including in more than 90 leading educational institutions. Simple access arrangements can range from 12 months, 24/7 for a single user (’student’) for a single program, through to sophisticated ‘dedicated portal’ arrangements for large organisations with many potential trainees, including over multi sites. Perhaps it’s best to let Andy Routsis himself show his wares, and this link will take you directly to an Overview, with generous exposure of resource graphics and digital video: http://www.traininteractive.com/ara/overview/ From the ARA site, the eLearning link, https://store.traininteractive.com/ leads directly to detailed information. Clicking on a selection in the LHS panel, eg Injection Molding, will open a new window showing all the programs and bundles on the left, which can be individually opened, and more detail in the larger, RHS panel. By clicking here on the red, more info link, detailed descriptions and pricing are accessed. The above information has representative, Alan Mikkelsen Australia Pty Ltd, who points AUD / USD exchange rate programs are very affordable.
