Latest news on material drying: ATTN automatic dew-point and temperature control system motan-colortronic have developed ATTN – an automatic temperature and dewpoint control system which maintains the dew-point of the granulate being dried constantly to a defined value in line with the process parameters of the part being moulded. ATTN is now a standard feature throughout the entire LUXOR A range of dryers. ATTN for LUXOR A dryers – 80 to 2400 litres capacity With immediate effect, the ATTN automatic temperature and dew-point control system option is now available throughout the entire LUXOR A dryer range. ATTN, maintains a constant dew-point of the process air. It is essential for materials that require predefined moisture content and will be damaged if over dried as a result of too low dew-points. The dewpoint of the process air is constantly regulated and documented to ensure regulation precision within +/- one degree. ATTN has been designed to maintain a constant dew-point of the process air for drying plastic granules. It is generally installed in the dry air generator and can only be set to one specific dew-point between -30°C and +5°C. This pre-set dew-point value is then stored and maintained. This principle requires that the amount of moisture in the process return air is higher than the set dew-point. Under normal atmospheric conditions, this is the case. With ATTN, all drying bins of a dry air generator are always operating with process air at the respective dew-point set value. This is particularly true for single-bin stations. However, multi-bin stations can also be equipped with this option. ATTN and ETA plus® - a useful combination ATTN keeps the dew-point constant, ETA plus® controls the air volume and the drying temperature. The combination of ATTN and ETA plus ® is possible and makes sense, since the control of air volume and the automatic adjustment of the temperature optimally supports proper drying at a constant dew-point: ATTN keeps the dew-point constant while ETA plus®

Global market for stabilizers to increase to US$5.3 bln in 2021 Plastics last forever – but only when protected against effects of heat and light. Therefore, stabilizers are indispensable for many products made from plastics and rubber: They ensure safe processing and prevent premature aging and weathering. Especially polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has to be treated with stabilizers. The market research institute Ceresana has just published a new study regarding the market for these essential additives.

Pipette Molder, Scientific Specialties, “Makes millions” Using SEPRO Automation On their website, Scientific Specialties Inc. (SSI), Lodi, CA, is described as making “injection molded plastic consumable and durable products for use in life science research laboratories.” More specifically, SSI is one of the leading suppliers in the world of tubes, pipette tips, racks and other products used in DNA extraction. This is a process that you see all the time in the crime labs on TV, except that it’s often automated and very high speed. That’s why SSI makes lots of pipette tips… millions and millions every week.

SSI has three automation cells making pipette tips, all built around Arburg injection-molding machines. Developed by Sepro America, the automation is design to increase molding efficiency and prevent possible DNA contamination.

Long fibre thermoplastics polymers are often at the top of the list of metal replacement options due to the inherent performance capabilities and cost effectiveness. A key element that makes Polystruct LFT compounds suitable to replace metal is their exceptional strength to weight ratio. By way of example the chart below can give you some indication of the weight savings on offer. The specific gravity of a material defines the weight per cubic centimetre (or Millilitre) in grams at ambient temperature. Using this information it is easy to see that for a given part with a volume of 10 cm3 (or 10 ml), when made from Aluminium will weigh 26grams while selection of Nylon 6 with 40% long glass fibre will weigh just 13.1g – that’s a 50% reduction. Specific Gravity Comparison Polystruct LFT compounds are ideally suited to replace metals in many industries including: Automotive

Mining

Consumer durables

Aeronautical

Sports and recreation Polystruct LFT utilises pultrusion technology which results in completely impregnated fibres, offering improved surface appearance and increased resistance to scratching and marring, perfect for aesthetic parts. The range of choice for polymer and reinforcing fibre provide an almost endless scope to satisfy the performance requirements of your product. Furthermore, Polystruct LFT offers the ability to enhance functionality for UV protection, long term heat stability, colour and impact modification. LFT compounds have already proven their worth in demanding automotive applications, currently accounting for approximately 80% of global volumes. This is no accident as superior performance at elevated temperatures (80°C), the ability to reduce weight & assembly costs, integration of multiple functions into a single part, combined with broader design scope all spell success in achieving the ever more demanding requirements of today’s competitive market. For example a typical metal front end module can weigh 6 to 8kg and have 25 separate components while a LFT front end module weighs around 3kg with as few as 3 components. This has resulted in the latest cars having numerous LFT parts replacing traditional metal ones.

New Vice President of World Packaging Organisation (WPO) from AIP Past President of the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), Pierre Pienaar MSc FAIP, has been elected to the prestigious position of Vice-President (responsible for Education) on the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) Board. This appointment was made on the occasion of the biannual WPO meeting held in May at the Messe Dusseldorf in Germany. Pierre had association with WPO in the 1990s in his role as President of the Institute of Packaging South Africa. After becoming involved with the AIP in 2002, he began the push for Australia to become a member of WPO. Pierre felt Australia had much to offer the international packaging world and he knew from previous experience how much there was to gain for members who were part of a global, industrial family and network. With Pierre’s drive and networking, and with the AIP’s blessing and enthusiasm, the Institute became a full member at WPO’s 85th board meeting in Istanbul in 2010.
