SOLAR DECATHLON “DESCRIPTION AND METHODOLOGY
Solar Decathlon Europe is an international competition among universities which promotes research in the development of efficient houses. The objective of the participating teams is to design and build houses that consume as few natural resources as possible and produce minimum waste products during their life cycle.Particular emphasis is put on reducing energy consumption and on obtaining all the necessary energy from the sun.
P L A T E A U T EA M | SD E 2014
| C OMPE T IC IÓN S OLA R D E C AT H LON During the final phase of the competition, teams shall assemble their houses in Madrid, in a place open to the public called Villa Solar, where all of them can be visited. They will be competing in ten contests (that is why it is called ‘decathlon’) that will decide which one is the winner of that edition. In the competition that took place in September 2012, were 18 proposals from 12 different countries, 8 of which will come from Europe (Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, and Romania) and four more from China, Japan, Brazil and Egypt. All of these teams are supported by one or more universities and have the economic and technical support from institutions and companies. The main figures during the whole process, from the design to the last phase of the competition in Madrid are the students, known as ‘Decathletes’, who are guided by a professor, the ‘Faculty Advisor’. The event has a twofold purpose: educative and scientific. The Decathletes learn how to work in multidisciplinary teams and how to face the challenges of the future of building by developing innovative solutions. On the one hand, the public can see and
becomes aware of the real possibilities of reducing the environmental impact and at the same time keeping the comfort and quality of the design in their homes. On the other hand, professionals have access to techniques and processes that they can study and use. In addition, volunteers, who are essential for the development of the SDE, have the opportunity to share experiences with the teams and move ahead in their careers thanks to their work during the competition. Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 will take place in Paris, in Versalles. During the competition, the participating houses will compete on the ten contests of the competition: 1. Architecture 2. Engineering and Construction 3. Energy Efficiency 4. Electrical Energy Balance 5. Comfort Conditions 6. House Functioning 7. Communication and Social Awareness 8. Urban Design, Transportation and Affordability 9. Innovation 10. Sustainability

UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ >>
The University of Alcalá was founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499 as a completely new educational project. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the University of Alcalá became the major center of academic excellence. Masters like Nebrija, Juan de la Cruz, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, etc. studied and tought here. The prestige of both and university studies and professors, soon became the model on which the new universities were established in America.
international projection and a stimulus in the activity of the region. The renowned quality of its university studies, the development of important research projects, its international relations, the historical and artistic interest of its iconic buildings, its new and modern facilities and its complete adaptation to the demands of today´s labor market, are the reasons why the University of Alcalá is at the very forefront of public universities.
In the eighteenth century, university studies in Spain were undergoing momentous changes in teaching methods and in the mid-nineteenth century the University moved to Madrid. Since the reopening of the University in 1977 to date, the collective effort and tenacity of its managers have made it possible to recover their intellectual, cultural and architectural heritage. Due to: the uniqueness of the university model, the historical contribution to the arts and sciences, and the beautiful architecture of its buildings; UNESCO declared the University of Alcalá, a World Heritage Site on December 2, 1998. At present, the University of Alcalá is a modern, medium sized institution, which is recognized in Europe and America as a role model. The University of Alcalá has incorporated the newest degrees in all fields of science, in addition to the classic humanistic and social sciences studies. All of them, along with the Science and Technology Park, are a major factor of

UNIVERSITY OF CASTILLA-LA MANCHA >> The University of Castilla-La Mancha began its first steps in 1985, but was formally established by law on June 30th, 1982, as the result of political autonomy and collective desire expressed by the society of Castilla-La Mancha, and shared by the regional government. The project began as a factor of social and territorial cohesion, with a clear goal: to act as a cornerstone for the economic, social, cultural and technological development of the autonomous community, responding to their current and future needs. From its modest beginnings three decades ago, the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) has become a reference for higher education in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. It has campuses in Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Toledo, and university headquarters in Talavera de la Reina and AlmadĂŠn, and it is a modern and competitive institution with over 30,000 students, 2,300 teachers and researchers and 1,200 service and administration staff.

ABOUT US
Plateau Team is presented as a multidisciplinary academic team of students of Architecture (UAH) and Building Engineering (UAH and UCLM), in collaboration with professors from these centers. It counts as well on the participation of other faculties and schools of these universities that will share their knowledge to cover all the areas in order to create an innovative Solar Habitat.
P L A T E A U T EA M | SD E 2014
In “Plateau Team” we have a very clear objective: to gain professional experience by facing the challenge of searching a new building system that can be able to absorb the population growth in a controlled and sustainable way. We can not continue with the current model of land consumption: we must become aware of the capacity of available resources and avoid overburdening the system. This raising awareness creates a symbiotic organism benefiting all parts involved.
Alternatives to uncontrolled growth of cities.
New places of opportunity in the city built. Sustainable densification. Symbiosis between the new and existing.
To achieve a sustainable development it is necessary to provide solutions to absorb these dynamics of development that, is why we are committed to sustainable densification of the existing urban structures.
TEAM’S ORGANIZATION Plateau Team is organized into three working groups: design, communication and finance. They are composed of students from both universities that work together to form a multidisciplinary group in all three fields. There are regular meetings scheduled for each group, and there is a weekly coordinators meeting, involving both universities, in which they share their progress and questions.

Among all the activities that took place during the weekend, we can point out: the presentation of all the ideas and works that were submitted to the competition, from which the first sketches of the prototype would come out; a talk by two students of UPM that have taken active part in previous editions of the Solar Decatlon; and finally the election of the coordinators as the completion rules establish.
Looking ahead to the delivery of Deliverable #2 on July 1, the universities that comprise the team organized aII Plateau Team coexistence among team members, teachers and students. This time, the event was held in Alcala de Henares, in a student residence on the outskirts of the city, from 7 to 9 June 2013. Of the activities that took place during the three days we highlight the comprehensive analysis report SDE organization made the Deliverable #1, analyzing failures and seeking solutions. Saturday was a busy day of work, with presentations by the various groups within design, responsible for different parts of the prototype, as well as media groups and funding, which outlined the progress made in recent weeks. In addition to the points raised in the next deliver Deliverable # 2 and the doubts raised about them. Sunday was the day of decision-making, to address the points that make the final design of the prototype and planning work during the month of June with several deliveries and internal corrections, as well as how to tackle the job in the months of summer.
The teambuilding weekend ended with a meeting between the work groups and their respective coordinators; and with the beginning of the short term strategies for the official deliveries that states the organization.

TEAMBUILDING WEEKEND #3
CONFERENCES >> “I Rehabilitation Meeting, Architecture and Energy”
“Rehabilitation: from the building to the neighborhood”
On February 20, 2013 a conference on rehabilitation was held at the COAM headquarters. Facing the actual situation of the Spanish building sector, rehabilitation is established as one of the main strategic priorities to which put efforts into, due to its great economic and energy cost-effectiveness potential. The aim of the conference is to analyze what rehabilitation should be, focusing on the energy aspects, and also analyze on which parts of the building can be modified. The contents of the conference where structured into four blocks: Regulation and Financing, Rehabilitation and Architecture, Energy Rehabilitation and Assessment tools. The COAM gave us a chance to talk about rehabilitation or rather urban regeneration. It was an important event as it gathered the main institutions and associations that drive this sector: Ministry of Development, IVIMA, IDEA, EMVS Madrid City Council, Eduardo Torroja Institute, ANDIMAT, CPPHAN ...
Continuing the series of conferences that began with the I Rehabilitation, Building and Energy Meeting, the I Technical Conference was held on March 21, 2013 on issues of neighborhood rehabilitation.
P L A T E A U T EA M | SD E 2014
Expert planners from the Municipal Housing and Land Company (EMVS) together with architects specialized in heritage conservation, intervention in consolidated town centers, and neighborhoods; they all explained their visions and experiences with it. The URSOS Program was presented in this conference, a software aid for sustainable urban development.
“Rehabilitation and Energy Performance Certificate Days in Coam”
“II Workshop almost zero energy buildings” (EECN)
On april 18th, we attended the REHABILITATION AND ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE INFORMATION DAY IN COAM. Pilar Pereda: coordinator of the COAM foundation courses. Changes on regulations in force were analyzed, the importance of the Energy Performance Certificate was presented, and the entry into force of the Housing and Land Integral Plan, which was approved on 5 April. The plan not only includes the Energy Performance Certificate but also other aspects such as rehabilitation and urban renewal and regeneration. The plan is particularly relevant as it is vitally important in Spain, where rehabilitation is thirteen points below the European average.Pilar Pereda introduced the bases for the functio ning of the Energy Performance Certificate of existing buildings, and also explained the recognized programs CE3 and CE3X. After the conference, a round table was held with the participation of representatives of the sector, raising subjects such as the free market of certification and the competences that the certifying agent must have.
On 13 September, Plateau Team attended II Workshop almost zero energy buildings. It intended as a forum for reflection to address the implications for the construction industry, architecture and related services adoption of the European Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings (Directive 2010/31/UE). Congress seeks to address key issues and allow the wizard to know the legal spectrum, technical and management that entails a high efficiency building and how to overcome the challenge of achieving energy buildings consume just over a horizon of less than ten years.

Plateau Team believes that continuing education is essential to obtain a project adapted to modern times, making use of new developments in terms of regulations, materials, building systems, etc. Therefore we attended various conferences such as:
“LCA at Torroja Institute” On 27th September we had a course about LCA really interesting at Torroja Institute. The course began with an introduction about sustainability and the impact of all products from the procurement of raw materials, processing, use and end of life. We learned how to perform a Life Cycle Analysis and regulation currently exists on the subject.
“AURhEA Workshop” On 19 September we participated in AURhEA Workshop, a unique showcase to raise awareness of professionals and the general public on different aspects influencing the comprehensive rehabilitation, both from a policy perspective, aid and programs, as applicable solutions to each case.
The AURhEA program is integrated into the Revitalization Plan of Rehabilitation, which it has been launched by the National Association of Rehabilitation and Reformation (ANERR, in Spanish). Its main objective is to meet the expectations of information and professionalism that both the sector and the citizens and the different Public Administrations demand to bring the culture of rehabilitation in a clear, efficient and eminently practical way.
“Thermography course” In collaboration with Sergio Melgosa, of the E-Building company, a company of energy efficiency dedicated to energy analysis and Thermographic, we had the possibility to do a training course at the Eduardo Torroja Institute of science and construction of CSIC. we applied basic Thermography notions and we had done tests with cameras and we made a test of permeability to Blowerdoor air, measuring air renewals of the room where the Conference was held.

On December 11 we had the possibility of participating in the III Workshop buildings energy almost nil, “building - neighborhood - city of energy consumption nearly zero: Identification of similarities and differences depending on the scale of action”, at the Sala Retiro of Madrid on IFEMA fairgrounds. The Workshop was organized into two parts, the first included two lectures about European project in development; they served to introduce the themes on which we subsequently discussed throughout workshops. One of the main considerations of this Workshop EECN III, was that the possibility of action in a larger scale, such as district or city, can allow a feasibility of solutions that in a smaller scale would not be possible; urban planning should be the first step towards low energy consumption buildings, the role of the user - citizen is always key in the process of making them a reality.
We had the chance of paticipating in two open tables that we shared with Javier Bermejo (KOMMERLING), Carlos Expósito (architect), Fernando Martín Consuegra (INST. EDUARDO TORROJA construction CC.), Edgar Kiviet (BREEAM is), Alejandro Garcia (AIDICO), Enrique Pindado (COITT), Inmaculada Martínez (EUATM), Manuel Soriano (COIIM), Emilio Medina (technical architect) Maria Rodriguez de la Rubia (KOMMERLING), Alejandro Bosqued (ASA) and Ana Maria Garcia (CONAIF).
17 Nov - Visit Homes SD2007 November 17 we had the opportunity to visit the “Solar House” that participated in the US Solar Decathlon of 2007, it is currently set in the campus de Montegancedo of the UPM. We visited the two models they have installed there, both used for scientific means.

A fundamental part of the dissemination of the project is to participate in as many events and conferences as possible, in order to make ourselves known for companies, to gain their support and funding in both educational and social levels, and to raise public awareness of current environmental problems and possible solutions.
23 Oct - IES Fernando Zóbel The past October 23 we got a chance to present our project to the alumni of a training Cycle on Construction and Public Works at I.E.S Fernando Zobel (Cuenca). We set out to make a lecture about our project embedded in a thematic context that focused on energy efficiency, exposing the goals and principles pursued by the competition, the team’s structure and work dynamic, the most relevant aspects of the SymbCity House project, detailing the prototype’s constructive aspects that have an impact on efficiency, as well as the conditioning of the same systems and the project’s funding strategies along with the activities and interventions in the field of communication and dissemination of the project. The students were especially interested in the structural behavior of the prototype, the forecast for the provision of services, and urban factor, understood from the point of view of owner, with the consequent redistribution of common spaces in the building.
29 Oct - VIII Foro Empleo UCLM The UCLM 3E Work forum is a meeting point between companies, working in different sectors, and students. It is a yearly event organized by the Vice President for Transfer and Relations with companies, through the Center of Information and Promotion of Work, and the UCLM’s General Foundation. In it, there are training sessions and activities centered on the acquisition of personal competencies and skills needed to enter
the professional world. One of these activities was dedicated to entrepreneurs, in which they had 5 minutes to present their ideas and innovative projects. Subsequently, these ideas were evaluated by a jury of expert investors in innovation and entrepreneurship. The project SymbCity House left a very good impression, waking the publics and experts interests alike.
13 Nov - Science Week. IES Professor Dominguez Ortiz, Azuqueca de Henares Last November 13th Plateau Team was pleased to receive 11ª grade students from “Profesor Dominguez Ortiz” High School from Azuqueca de Henares, at the School of Architecture in Alcala de Henares to talk about our project SymbCity House. The Solar Decathlon was a new concept for them, and they showed a big interest in the organization of our team. They are the next academic generation and they need to know how a multidisciplinary group like ours works. The event was big success, and it opened a long and interesting Q&A after the lecture.

Project Description SymbCity House has been developed to solve a real urban challenge: to launch the full energetic refurbishment of the outdated housing estate of Spanish cities, becoming an affordable and socially sensitive alternative for the building industry. This way, the energetic transformation of our cities can become a widespread phenomenon by individual building operations focused on the re-use of existing buildings. Inspired by the mutual benefit relationship between natural organisms known as symbiosis, a new self-sufficient house will cooperate with the old buildings to reach the sustainability goals demanded to our cities. We propose the colonisation of the roofs of the target buildings with an extra level of construction. It can develop a wide variety of uses, from public facilities to dwellings, in which we focus our investigation. The sale of this extra urban land helps financing a global refurbishment operation on the building, creating this way a mutual benefit between “host” (existing) and ”guest” (new) housing units. The guest housing unit will be a nearly-zero energy consumption builiding, while the host will accomplish, at least, a level B energy rating.

MANOTERAS DISTRICT
The abandon of the traditional cities, caused by the uncontrollable urban sprawl of the last decades, is the main challenge that European cities must face nowadays. In Spain, the suburbanization phenomenon is a huge energy, pollution and mobility issue, especially in the Madrid metropolitan area . The construction of an efficient and more sustainable human habitat must try to fight and solve this exodus. The core of our old cities represents a huge energy waste for our countries and the whole planet. But at the same time, it represents the opportunity to prove that the compact city is the most balanced model for human settlings, as it concentrates the energy consuption and it reinforces the social links of the community. SymbCity House is a single intervention that makes part of a wider urban project for the Manoteras district in Madrid. Manoteras is a residential area with a poor level of construction, built in the middle-50s. The project can be adapted to many housing typologies in this neighbourhood, as it is a standarized construction that will make refurbishment operations affordable to citizens with low income levels .

REFURBISHMENT IN MADRID
SYMBCITY HOUSE DWELLING CONTEXT
SymbCity House begins with an external wooden structure. The structure creates an extra space 1 metre wide for the host house, increasing its surface and creating an air chamber where heat from solar gains can be stored, reducing heating consumptions in winter. Following a standarized pattern, we generate the three main areas of the house. The first one contains the the bedroom and the house living core, where most daily activities suck as cooking, eating and rest take place. The second space is the multifunctional room, working as a patio or greenhouse according to the change of seasons. The third space is the technical block, containing facilities and wet rooms, which has been designed with an independent structural frame.
SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE COMPETITION HOUSE
Being a prototype that shows how this operation could take place in a real situation, the translation from the top of an old building roof to the SDE site keeps as many features as possible to make the proposal accurate to the real life situation it is trying to solve, including the external structure which supports the construction without interference with the old construction.
P L A T E A U T EA M | SD E 2014
The prototype is composed by a complete SymbCity House appartment for 2 people, v and a 1,30m high basement representing the “host building. It performs the external look and an indoor scenography of the dialy life of the original inhabitants of the building.
BIOCLIMATIC STRATEGIES | PR O J E C T D E S C R IPT ION. S Y MB C IT Y H OUS E
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The walls of the builiding are composed of thick layers of insulating material, archieving passivhaus standards, while Phase Change Materials on the internal side of the wall keep a balanced indoor temperature without extra energy waste. Solar gains are carefully controlled by eaves and other sun - shading devices. This way, we obtain a good balance between passive and active energy saving strategies, archieving a nearly zero energy consumption The multifunctional room is a very flexible space. It can be adapted depending of the change of seasons. It becomes a cool place in summer, with sunshading, cross ventilation and a vertical garden which keeps the air fresh. During the cold months, the envelope is completely closed, becoming a greenhouse which provides extra heating to the house.
CONSTRUCTION & ENGINEERING SYSTEMS SymbCity House is a fast and industrialized construction. The whole system has been built following the balloon-frame system, made entirely with wood based materials. We introduce an innovative system of industrialized wall sections. With this system the transport and execution are cheap and fast, reducing the energy waste during the construction period.
The heating and cooling conditioning system are based on a low temperature radiant ceiling, with very low heat and electricity consumptions. Besides, the constant monitoring of the house activates a series of simple mechanisms in order to take advantage of external conditions or protect the house against them .
