OUT OF SEASON ON YOUR CURRENT SERIES… “Out of season, or the savage life” is a medium format series which the principle is to track down in our contemporary society various traces of “savagery”--of its free and poetic nature and through its different definitions: through the animal in its wounded freedom, vegetation trapped in the state of civilization, nature as powerful, disobedient and humiliated, the unspoiled, uncontrollable child , old-age and its terrible lucidity and intransigence, the flesh as the imprint of the primitive. And savagery, in the so-called civilized world with its desperate efforts to domesticate it. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION… The general confrontation between man and nature, man and his own human nature. And for the same reasons, a great fascination with childhood and old-age and for all the traces, fingerprints and wounds. YOUR PROJECTS : • I will be distributing my first book, Everything is Calm (which as published at the end of 2009), over the internet (www. toutestcalme.fr) and also through a chain of bookstores in France. In the near future, the book will also be distributed abroad in London, Barcelona, New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Beirut, etc. In Paris, the book is available in a dozen outlets, including the Galerie Nationale de Jeu de Paume, the Palais de Tokyo and the Yvon Lambert Gallery among others. • An exhibition of this same series at L’Imagerie, a renowned photography center at Lannion (22) in Bretagne, a beautiful exhibition venue from April 29 to May 20. • Also, a participation in Révélation4, an exhibition of contemporary photography on the 26th and 27th of June • In parallel with these projects, there are several series in progress, sales in my publication and albums in music, travelling... too many ideas, too many desires. http://www.frankloriou-photography.com http://www.toutestcalme.fr http://www.facebook.com/pages/Frank-Loriou-Photography/92693898822?ref=ts

INTERVIEW WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION ? Everything, I’m omnivorous, whatever strikes me, a phrase, a particular position, a shot of a movie, everything I see and hear is filtered and enters in my imagination CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE PLACE OF TYPOGRAPHY IN YOUR WORK ? Typography is inevitable for the fruition of my work but I usually have no power over it. When it happens I become their nightmare. YOUR PROJECTS‌ My work is mostly done in partnership with newspapers and magazines, I recently participated in the making of a show (gig) and have now a current exhibition in Turin. BIOGRAPHIE Marco Cazzato was born in 1975. He attended the Liceo Artistico begins to deepen its stylistic research, following some courses in comics and illustration and 1997/98 public with the Center Andrea Pazienza and Ganesh, then in 1998 public on the Biennale of Young Artists of Europe and the Mediterranean and in the meantime he attended the three-year training course at the Free University Novalia. In 2001 he started a collaboration with home cinema entertainment Lanterna Magica, during which participates in the creation of feature films and TV series for Italy, Germany and Spain. Since 2003 he dedicated himself completely to artwork is in communication and in the publishing and working with various institutions, associations and publishing houses, including: La Stampa, LINUS, Baldini Castoldi Dalai editore, Slow Food Editore, Einaudi, Il Sole 24 ore, Carta, Fernandel, Resurgence UK, Blogs e Nuvole, Real Castle Racconigi, Fondazione Teatro Ragazzi e Giovani, Radio Flash, circle arci Zei, Nerosubianco Editor. INTERVIEW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE‌ My photographic universe is musical and mainly jazzistic. Its through this music that I got into photography and my heart is into documenting jazz lives, for a long time, I hope, with passion and integrity. Whatever my photographic peregrinations, I know that jazz will always be at the heart of it. I photograph things that interest me, that touch me and I have a lot of interests. We often say that patience is the main quality of a photographer but I believe that curiosity is of equal importance. ABOUT THIS SERIES ? Its a series of duos, because interaction in jazz, and music in general is very important. I love capturing instances where the musicians are in unison or are listening. These moments are magic for me, human and very intense.
YOUR PROJECTS : A book in Spanish, my first, entitled “Estelas de Jazz” and it will be out very soon from a German editor. 123 portraits of musicians, known or not, will be accompanied with text of a great literary quality, written by the Spanish Author Belen Carmona. Its an homage to music through words, and my photography. Then a collaboration with a musician that will be out in the summer of 2011 in Geneva. My vision of Geneva, my city, with photos done and to do to be projected on a giant screen that will accompany music that I can’t divulge because its still in planning. Also an interesting contest in the industrial zones of Geneva. I’m really interested in this because the industrial zones are full of history, character and poetry. I hope to have the time to produce my images because the deadline is near… in the beginning of April. Also, I have been invited to the 2nd edition of the festival «Images en Scènes» in spring of 2011 that will take place in the La-Roche-Posay spa in France. I’ll need to prepare an exposition of 50 shots in large format. Finally, the life of a photographer can take many roads and surprising trails, it was suggested to me today (March 1st) to apply for photographic assignments with the United Nations. INTERVIEW HOW DO YOU PROCESS YOUR ART ? My Process is very straight forward, I grab a canvas some markers and start. Most of the time I think about people I know or situation I encountered while I paint and I represent them in a way I can only recognize. While painting I follow my hand and let it guide me, after a while I look at the work and I see how to move forward making shapes I love. I have some rules that I follow and sometimes break. I like to try to paint on different surfaces as each surface feels different, I am always looking for the smoothest one. I really enjoy the feeling of my hand sliding and creating lines. WHAT INSPIRES YOU ? My main inspiration is the people in my life. Every time I start a painting I think about someone I know and the way we are related. I paint my ideas and feelings about that person then after a while I just let my mind wander and let other outside elements influence me. I also paint my wishes and use that time to day dream. As far as visual inspiration I can’t really tell you because I really don’t know where my art comes from, I never went to art school or though about what type of art I wanted to do. My roommate in NYC is a painter, he had an empty canvas, I grabbed it and theses lines came out of nowhere. I am sure a million visual things inspire me but I am not conscious about it. YOUR PROJECTS ? I just moved to Los Angeles so right now I am just looking for galleries to show my work. I have a few commissioned paintings to finish up. I am researching ways to create thicker lines and paint bigger formats. I created iPhone covers and I am now looking into creating laptop skins. STUDIES THE BODY I did portraits. I also had a need to work on a body, mine, to observe it, to understand it, to accept it but also to see it as I rarely get to see it, from the back. That is how this series started. Working with a Polaroid wasn’t easy at the beginning, being confronted in a couple of minutes with a rough image, right away, with no putting it back. It allowed me to show the body the way it is, nothing fake, no retouching, no tricking but slowly getting used to the idea. The idea of shooting the back allows me to separate from the images, as if its not me, just a body. I don‘t give the keys to the «viewer » just the path, I invite them to appropriate the image and develop their own interpretation. FEMININITY This work allowed me to reflect on the female body, the image that we have, and the image that we give it, the image that we reflect. This made me question a lot of things, on the place of women in our society, on beauty, on what is femininity. There are many questions to which I don’t know the answer but its a path to it, among many. YOUR PROJECTS This work is a study. It calls me to continue it, but I don’t know exactly in which direction. I think that I’m not yet done with my own body yet but I would like to work with other bodies too and not just the female body but also the male because I think the two are linked, they are for me anyway. www.floretricotelle.com

FÉMINITUDES A WORK OF FEMININITY “The eternal feminine, a singular plural” wrote Etienne Gamelon, one of my masters and a friend... It is an inexhaustible subject, the body that fascinates and inspires me even after numerous years. ...And by choice, and for pleasure, it is always in my sketches and drawings. Probably because I have more the soul of a researcher than a finder. The intensity of a stroke, the softness of a curve, the mystery of shadows—all allows me, better than words , to seize this rare, intense, oh so fleeting moment with the model. I believe in the virtues of rapid breaks, and the spontaneity of lines, and allowing no retouching or editing, in order to sharpen the eye and go straight to the essential: the form of the sketch should spring alive in a matter of minutes, or it does not exist at all. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION : I have an admiration of the powerful drawings by Egon Schiele, the mysterious portraits of Giacometti, and the nudes by Jean-Loup Sieff...but also the wash drawings/water colors of Alain Bonnefoit who, in the manner of asian calligraphy, seized in a a single flash moment the entire sensuality of the model. YOUR ARTISTIC TECHNIQUE… I mainly use simple mediums: charcoal, graphit, chalk, pastels and wash drawings... all of which is utilized rapidly in order to create the intensity of the instant present. claude@grandclement.com

INTERVIEW PAINTING… I would like to know how to paint with ease as in a dream that lies in the folds of imagination. Painting, or creation rather, over the years has been totally integrated into my life. (..?..) Creation for me is totally dependent from inspiration and desire, so its impossible to rely on know-how. I know little about this mysterious inspiration, nor why or how it works; only that when I don ‘t have it, I‘m in total errancy. I know that creation needs and that it likes to probe in the depths of the soul, to renew, to find new sources of desire and energy, I also know that its often a source of solitude but also great joy and moments of grace… This is what has kept me going for so long. ABOUT THIS SERIES… To speak of a series that is in the process of being made is delicate, we could say that these paintings are the fruit of a requestioning that started in April 2009 after 10 years devoted to painting, photos, and nature. At the end of this demanding work, often in black and white, and wholly dedicated to real things, the return to imaginary abstraction and new thoughts imposed itself on me again. IN TRANSIT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE… It is difficult for me to answer this question. I do not feel partial to one world vision or another. My work generally is based on a curiosity, a treatment, an aestheticization. Thus, I am not bound by a specific subject or a precise theme, which gives me a freedom to choose. My motivation is related a photographic ‘discovery.’ I hasten to exploit this method of research and photography. I observe, I work, I aestheticize then somehow I take what I see and propose an alternate reality. ABOUT THIS SERIES… This series of images concerning industrial areas were shot in the regions of Anvers and Rotterdam. What caught my attention in these places was this interplay between the scale, the colors and the material. These environments with somewhat ‘unnatural’ characteristics invites careful observation. A certain atmosphere emanates from these places, making me feel rather contemplative. The choice of the title stems out of the function these natural places have as areas for storing industrial materials. This title can also be understood as describing a transition from one state to another, either for the viewer or for me. YOUR PROJECTS… The next series will be radically different. INTERVIEW DESCRIBE TO US YOUR WORLD… I have a fairly pronounced preference for things that are rusting and a little bit crooked, a storm full of clouds, mysterious shadows, blinding lights... These are elements that are commonly found in my pictures. From there, one can imagine that my personal graphic universe will be a theatre of shadows, with metallic, corroding structures shooting up from the sand in a desert upon where a thunderstorm is rumbling in the distance. On the other hand, I don’t know if there would be a lot of spectators at this scene, or what they would even look like. YOUR ARTISTIC METHODE… It is pretty much similar to mixed-media, in the sense that I utilize a variety of sources, such as photography, drawings and scannings... I assemble the pieces, cut, glue, distort, paint—all of which are done digitally. I feel a bit like a digital surgeon, but with thick fingers leaving many traces. I do not like the frigidity of certain digital renderings, therefore I go out of my way to leave errors, erasures, things that give more soul to the images.
COMMISSIONED WORK ? There are numerous things underway at the moment. These range from the creation of an illustrated banner for the upcoming podcast of Utopod, to the production of images for a variety of CDs, such as the notable composer Krzysztof A. Janczak, the French artist Rodrigue, and a Native American group Injunuity. I will also begin creating the cover for the novel of the Black Currents collection, edited by Gulf Stream. YOUR PROJECTS… It is a bit multidirectional. But its better to always have several cards up one’s sleeve, just to be sure of winning over at least one party. However, there are certain projects that are in the backburner covered up with dust, more so than others, all waiting quietly to be taken out of its torpor. At this moment, I am organizing, with the bookstore Mancelle Récréalivres, an exposition around the release of my first children’s book called Sam. It has been created in company with the author Jérôme Noirez. The exposition/book signing is planned for the 20th of November. Otherwise, I am already working on the next illustrated children’s book, eventhough it is still in a rather embryonic stage. I am also creating some images for hybrid exposition project, also with Jérôme Noirez, with the theme of an imaginary visit to a real city. ASIE A JOURNEY‌ If I could remember just one trip, I suppose that it would be my very first one. I was 20 years old, with long hair and stubble on my chin, and I left all on my own for Israel. The deflowering went well, and it gave me the desire to travel once again. THE PEOPLE Most of the time, I try not to bother the people too much with my camera, thus I work rather far away from them and integrate them into the landscape; I do not create too many portraits. YOUR PROJECTS For my next destination, Jordan, I will go alone for two weeks in search of the Grail (according to Indiana Jones in Petra). INTERVIEW YOUR ARTISTIC JOURNEY… I love to imagine stories. I have invented thousands: sitting in my room with my legos, lying in the living room, leafing through an art book belonging to my aunt, while illustrating mybooks... I love to imagine stories. With the BAC in my pocket, two opportunities presented themselves to me: to pursue a future in the sciences and spend my days doing mathematics and physics, or to steer myself towards the arts and study graphic design. With my success in the entrance exminations, I decided to study at a school for visual communication. That is where I learned how to tell stories. There, I rediscovered drawing, color usage, painting, graphic design... I love to imagine stories. After experiences with an agency, I met Virginie Delannoy who had the same desires for independence and creative freedom, and thus we decided to co-create Fluonoir (http://www.fluonoir.com). ABOUT THIS SERIES… The illustrations in this series are the results of hard work carried out for various commissions in the last two years. They were created for a variety of different media: magazines, posters, textiles, websites... I created these illustrations respecting the technical constraints of each respective media.
