MOTEL WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY FOR YOU? Is this question relevant and useful in order to understand my photographs? I don’t think so. What if photography for me was a way to make money and to be famous? Would that change the inherent value of my work? What if I really didn’t give a damn about the people I meet through the « Stranger« project and it was just a Cartesian analysis of the world around me? I have often been considered as a great humanist through my work… and what if it was all bullshit? Would my work lose its value? These are questions I ask myself when I am requested to reflect on what photography is for me. I ask myself this everyday and it is quite daunting and I don’t feel like writing a book about it, so you’ll have to make do with this shit I’ve written in five minutes that’s full of mistakes. WHAT IS THIS SERIES ABOUT? This is a simple project I did for fun. It’s never been published, it is no big thing. I explored a theme done many times before. I appropriated the jewels of Quebecois kitsch and played with local geometry and colours. Enjoy. WHAT ARE YOUR PROJECTS? INTERVIEW TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS SERIES… First comes the colour grey, surrounded by all the others, a lost and ever changing land. Then come the silhouettes and you have to find their skin, the texture of their skin – that of the tress for instance, like the checkerboard of time, or the cranial bone of a skull-earth globe. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? A particular technique or a series of technique, a mixture. And then something happens. Or not. I try things out a lot, make and remake. The purpose declares itself later on. If I am true, then I move people – in an intimate, personal and shattering way. WHAT ARE YOUR PROJECTS? Faces and bodies. Monotype faces, bodies cut out from paper. Landscapes too, to investigate transparency. To try and capture the aura of a naked body requires a lot of time and practice. Therefore the main goal is to put some time aside to work on this.

INTERVIEW TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICE I started photography while travelling and right from the beginning I was interested in reporting and documentary photography. My first images are about people who live on mountains of rubbish, near Manila, Philippines. Later on I went a few times in Gaza, documenting day-to-day life in general and the impact the political situation had on children in particular. Last year I did a few shots in Iran, which are only first impressions really. I hope I can go back and develop this subject further. TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT… Poland is not the only country where gay people are confronted to homophobia, but what shocks me is the way the homophobic language is part of the political and public life. If the debate is ever opened, it is soon overcome with stereotypes, rejection and judging. Lesbians are either invisible to society or victim of a double dose of discrimination: as women without children or family and as women with a « diseased » sexual orientation. This is typical of traditional societies. In this documentary I not only wanted to show the life of these women, but also what they do and what they like. I wanted to show not only that they do exist, but also how they exist. I regret a bit that only active women living in bigger cities accepted to participate. Unfortunately, many women who live in smaller communities daren’t come out. Not only is the peer pressure too strong to fight off, but there is no legal protection against sexual discrimination. Talking about this publicly means facing dire consequences, amongst which the possibility to lose one’s job.

I am thinking of a second phase for this project, hoping to gather enough material for a book. INTERVIEW TELL US ABOUT YOUR UNIVERSE… It’s dreamlike, surrealist, Rimbaud-esque, poetic and rebellious. It’s the universe of imagination, childhood and magic. It’s a place where a girl dreams of finding an old book full of mysteries but can’t find it, so she tries to write it herself. WHAT ARE YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? “The other world”, dreams and more recently life. I was fascinated by Alice in Wonderland in 2007 and 2008 and it spills into my drawings in an unconscious way. Last year I discovered Rimbaud and it opened my eyes. It’s like a picture diary of the unconscious. WHAT ARE YOUR PROJECTS? I am going to have an exhibition in Paris after my recent show in Dresden and Berlin, Germany, and then I’ll be in Rennes. News will be available on Facebook and Myspace about them. I am also trying to find an editor for my work. I’d like to carry on with animation projects, maybe through collaboration, and make short films. I am also working on a homemade solo album. SWIRLS WHERE DOES « SWIRLS » COME FROM? The Swirls series is about trying to mix traditional mark making techniques and photography. Many artists, be they painters, illustrators, sculptors or even installation artists work from photographs. I wanted to explore ways to do the opposite: to start from painting towards a photographic end product. I also wanted to play around with the notions of accuracy, focus and randomness, which are not concepts usually linked to photography. WHAT IS WYSIWIGOTN PHOTOGRAPHY? Ah ah… in fact it doesn’t really exist, I invented the word. It comes from WYSIWYG, the computing process in which what you see on a screen is what is going to be printed. WYSIWIGOTN means: “What You See Is What I Got On The Negative”. It means that the whole thing is film based and doesn’t contain any digital manipulation. True, I could have produced all these images digitally, with artificial textures and colour alterations. But it would have been too easy, actually. I needed to find a way to do it live, so that reality is altered at the very moment when the photo is taken. I wanted to commit myself fully to the process of allowing randomness to control my work. When I take a Swirl picture, I have but a vague idea of what it is going to look like in the end. Each picture is unique and can’t be replicated because it is on the negative. I think it is important. I think it is part of the magic. WHAT ARE YOUR PROJECTS? I have a couple of shows in London lined up and hopefully a new book coming out in April. I am looking for a gallery who’d accept to represent me to… Finally, last year I organized a series of shows in Grenoble, based on the square format. INTERVIEW WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION? I get my inspiration from all sort of things such as fashion magazines, movies, old photobooks, old comics but also from other artists that I like. HOW DO YOU CREATE? I have lots of ways to create... I don’t like to do just one thing in one way, so sometimes I create a painting using a sketch I made at forehand and sometimes I just start drawing, painting or sticking things to the canvas. I use different techniques too, but most of the times I usE acrylic paint. For my illustrations I combine more techniques and use Photoshop to create the end result. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS? I am working on a new series of paintings that have a lot of collages in it too, so I can do a new Silas exhibition. AND IF WE WRESTLED ? HOW DID THIS SERIES COME ABOUT? As a photographer of current events, I did reports related to cultural affairs and issues. This series began in parallel to the release of the film, The Wrestler. Wrestling has always been a fashionable sport, but since two years ago, Lucha Libre has blossomed in the rings of training halls. Both men and women practice this sport, which is popular particularly in Mexico. However, it is more than just a sport--it is a religion. Some of them wear masks, only to leave their eyes and mouths uncovered. They have long hair with very kitschy costumes. I met a charismatic non-professional wrestler, Fernando does college sports during the day but transforms into The Matador during the evenings and week-ends. The Matador is famous for his technique and his confident performance. I wanted more than anything to write a report on this social phenomenon tied to this sport—and thus discovered a community and family of wrestling. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION… Day-to-day life in Paris and its suburbs: the people who live there, their problems, their joys. Photography for me is an excuse to go somewhere. So my inspiration is... curiosity. A special thought for the photographers of the The Public Eye agency, in hoping to find in them some new support. YOUR PROJECTS ? I wish to continue working for the agency IP3 and report the news in France, but also to detach myself and report topics more personal to me. Also, another project is to explore new countries—why not on holiday! It will soon be Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia where I will decorate my “Hors Series” And then the projects, its a bit of a dream also. INTERVIEW YOUR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION… I am quite inspired by the Surrealists, artists coming from the Pop Art movement, as well as street art ON YOUR METHOD OF WORK: My illustrations are done principally with photo montages. I use different photos from mostly the 1960s and the 1970s, then I assemble them to create a more modern ‘world.’ COMMISSIONS OF YOUR WORK: People mainly use my work for album covers of musicians oversees, as well as flyers for concerts. http://albane.ultra-book.com

THE MORTUARY ABOUT THIS SUBJECT… I have always been fascinated by the hospital (anesthetist mother, surgeon wife, I myself worked in a hospital during my youth...), so the idea just naturally came to me. I wanted, at the foundation, to put into images a chronicle of different departments, and I started my series of reports in neonatology (example is on the site). SOME DIFFICULTIES? The photoshoot remained relatively easy and simple during the two months. It’s necessary to say that the reception given to me by the staff in the mortuary was simply exceptional. What is paradoxical is that the difficulties arose after the shooting. I suspected that death as a subject would be what was in question, but to imagine such an outcry against it! In fact, “difficulty” is not the appropriate word... fear, anxiety, stigma, disgust or even ignorance are words that would be more precise! Of course, nobody except “photographie.com” has tried to show, or even look at the images. It’s difficult in this condition to continue with my work, as even to do this I cannot put together a report of the hospital scene. YOUR PROJECTS… I am currently working on a project on “mornings.” And no matter what, I want to not despair and be able to show images from my hospital project: • The department of third-degree burns at L’Hopital Trousseau. • The department of psychiatry at L’Hopital St. Anne. • The center for infants and juveniles in the 14th arrondissement of Paris • The sick children at L’Hopital Necker • The trauma center at L’Hopital de Garches I’m also entertaining the possibility of doing a series on pornography. www.brunotichadou.fr

INTERVIEW HOW DID YOUR SERIES COME ABOUT? In fact, it’s an old project that I’ve had in my mind. I always wanted to do this series of images on the body of an insect which would have been combined with bits of machinery. I like adding armor and machinery together as I find the result very aesthetically pleasing. Besides, vehicles are combinations of the two, is it not? Then the project just took the form of an imaginary beast, a mixture of old typography to add to the timelessness and to the different textures and colors. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRTION… It is truly diverse; for each series there is going to be influences from the old naturalists of the engravings by Albrect Durer. A combination of different graphic styles and modern illustrations are also sources of inspiration. YOUR PROJECTS… To produce new series of images, or as it is natural to me--to mix photography and the graphic arts. I’ll develop a little more my series called ZOO CITY (savage animals in the streets of New York). I am also preparing a new series on the Toreros, then eventually on Magritte. 365 WHAT IS THIS PROJECT ABOUT? At first I wanted to explore my environment by scrutinizing the elements that form my identity: my history, the history of my family and close relatives, the objects I particularly like. This series is a reflection of this universe, which I occasionally link to news items that move me. Sometimes images of the violence that happens around me seeps into this protected world of mine. The methodology I applied to this project is more about self discipline than anything else. I knew that taking one picture a day for a year would force me to hone my photographic vision, like a pianist doing scales. The main goal of this exercise was to make progress through repetition. IT IS NEARLY A SELF-PORTRAIT, NO? Well, yes, it’s a self portrait in the shape of a 365 pieces puzzle! But then again, an image that is sincere is inevitably a reflection of its creator, isn’t it? WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? This exercise brought me, maybe naturally, to still life photography. At the moment I am studying XVII’s century vanitas. The transient quality of life, the vanity of owning anything, even wisdom, are themes I am really interested in. This and the creation of a “short mythology” of my family. INTERVIEW DESCRIBE YOUR UNIVERSE TO US… It is never easy to talk about one’s work. I’d say that I use slightly naive styles and characters. What I do is very colourful, not always very serious and a bit off too, but behind the scene I try to touch on themes that are deeper, more personal or darker... I do like this quirkiness in my paintings and it makes people laugh. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My sources of inspiration are pretty varied. It’s whatever I see in the street, at exhibitions, in books (I particularly like Dave Kinsey and Alexone for instance) or it can even be a drawing on a piece of paper. All of that can kick-start loads of stuff… My work is also very much influenced by my mood. I listen to a lot of music when I work and I guess that must have an impact. WHAT ARE YOUR PROJECTS? First of all, I need to concentrate on my next exhibition that’s starting at the end of February in Le Havre. I am also part of a few group shows and I design flyers and posters too.
