Editor’s Letter Hello. If you still remember us (yes, you do) we’re back! It’s been a year too long since the last release of Platinum Love, but alas the good news as of Issue 2 (this one!) is that we’re going to be around more often now, we realised that you would have missed us way too much so Platinum Love decided to return as a bi-monthly rather than an annual, we’ll be out every second 15th of the month, both online & in print (support us, yay!). We have some adjusting to do, to get back on track however we’re very happy to present our second issue from Volume 2, the Let them Eat Cake issue! We deal with everything luxurious (or not) and despite of the recent revolutions happening all over the world we instill some elitism & bring back a sense of divide between what is tasteful, and what is merely pure trash. However, the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So enjoy this issue & look out for more articles updates online regularly by our dear new online editor, Elise.

Ritty Tacsum and her humanoids
Ritty Tacsum and her Humanoids is the very personal debut by young creative photographer Ritty. The exhibition is not only a reflection of the worlds she creates and fabricates, but a mirror of her dream-sequences. The result is often dark, often intimate - one in which she lays her soul bare, unafraid of world’s eyes. On from September 27th, St James Cavalier.
For film lovers stuck in Paris
Diane Pernet yesterday revealed the astonishing array of actors, designers, filmmakers, fashion photographers and celebrities who will take part in the fourth edition of her groundbreaking festival, ‘A SHADED VIEW ON FASHION FILM’ (ASVOFF). Exploring the themes of fashion, style and beauty through the medium of the moving image, ASVOFF 4 will be held at the Centre Pompidou from October 7 – 9, marking the close of Paris Fashion Week. The main attraction at the three-day festival will be the screening of a kaleidoscope of short films (each 30 seconds to 5 minutes long), culminating in the announcement of the winners of ASVOFF’s coveted prizes (the MK2 Grand Prize, Best Film, Best Art Direction, Best Acting, Best Styling, Best Sound Design, the Shu Uemura Beauty Prize and the Emerging Talent Award presented by Portal+Zekka). Punctuated by music (pianist Rosey Chan), performances (dancer-choreographer Zack Winokur), live installations and various other festivities, ASVOFF 4 will also screen a host of cult & vintage films, documentaries, feature-length movies and a series of dance-inspired films. Spanning both the establishment and the underground, fashion brands & designers featured in this year’s films include Yves Saint Laurent, Balmain, Undercover, Miu Miu, Comme des Garcons, Maison Martin Margiela, House of Holland, Stephen Jones, Prada, Dries Van Noten, Charlie le Mindu, Calvin Klein & Gareth Pugh. Behind the camera are photographers Bruce Weber, Ellen von Unwerth, Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Lisa Eisner, Mark Borthwick, Bryan Adams, Walter Pfeiffer, the late Richard Avedon and many others who have turned their hand to video or film in order to capture people with inspirational style who will appear either onscreen or in person at ASVOFF like Rossy de Palma, Daphne Guinness, Drew Barrymore, Christina Kruse, Faye Dunaway and Ultra Violet (the muse of both Salvador Dalí & Andy Warhol). Other directors simply have something personal, profound, abstract, hell-raising, humorous or invigorating to express. The iconic Daphne Guinness will make a special appearance to introduce films by Joseph Lally, before sitting for a Q&A session on her many exciting current and forthcoming projects. Rossy de Palma, the legendary actress and muse of Pedro Almodóvar, will also make a special appearance and introduce a film by Kelley Sane. Rossy debuted as ASVOFF’s first ever ‘Ambassador’ at a special screening of ASVOFF at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Having appeared in over 40 films and having long been an inspiration to the fashion elite (Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Christian Louboutin and most recently Louis Vuitton among others), Rossy personifies the spirit of ASVOFF as a unique talent rousing the worlds of fashion and cinema in equal measure. Again this year, l’Ina partners with ASVOFF proposing a program focused on special guests, images and exciting sounds from the fashion world conserved in the l’Ina archives. Submissions to ASVOFF have grown exponentially since its inception in 2008. This year, a staggering 103 films by 88 directors have been selected for the festival, 68 of which are in competition for prizes. Filmmakers hail from 17 countries far and wide including France, Chile, USA, Latvia, Italy, Japan, UK, Switzerland & Israel.

Photographs by Tyler Shields Words by Lisa Gwen Lisa Gwen: What cam(s) do you use? Do you prefer film/digital; colour/B&W? Tyler Shields: Mainly Canon some Leica and I enjoy film and digital colour and black and white LG: Do you have a creative process or is your work largely spontaneous? TS: Both. I have shoots I plan for months then people show up at 2 a.m. and we just start shooting. LG: Could you describe the feeling of being behind the lens? What do you see/look for encapsulated within those 4 corners? And do we see the world of infinite possibilities that you do, or are we only allowed to savour a portion? TS: Anything I can dream up. I can create anything I think I can do; it’s my way of showing people exactly how I see the world. LG: Your artistic career is often described as having begun with the Trainspotting shoot, but what was there before that? Before that I was directing music videos and I started taking photos completely at random. PLATINUM LOVE VOLUME 2 ISSUE 2
LG: Why have you chosen celebrities as subjects? Is shooting ‘VIPs’ any more fun than shooting the common Joe?
TS: I would say it’s both the combination of Lindsay and what we did together. She is incredible and people love her.
TS: I just like to shoot talented people. Knowing how to be in front of a camera is often harder than being behind it. The people I work with happen to be successful because they are talented.
LG: What would your dream shoot be like? Who with and where would you like to show it?
LG: How do you strike a balance between conveying an artistic shot and portraying fame? TS: I get something different out of people. they come to me because they want to not because they have to. LG: Have you got any spicy/funny anecdotes to share about some of the beautiful people you’ve shot? Who’s been the most fun on set, and what do they bring to the whole creative process? TS: I love them all; Emma Roberts showed up on her birthday and said she wanted to shoot with cake. 10 minutes later she was covered in it. LG: The Lindsay Lohan shoot (most especially) has received tremendous acclaim/exposure. Is it the blood and the fangs, or is it just Lindsay?
TS: There’s one I have been working on for years and I will get it to happen. It will include everyone all at one time. LG: I was told that you have a screening at SoHo house in West Hollywood on October 1. Could you tell us a bit about that and about any upcoming projects which you are particularly looking forward to? TS: The gallery in London (exhibition at Imitate Modern with Maximilian Wiedemann opening 14th October) will be exciting. My own gallery next year in the US and the Soho House thing is a private screening or the craziest unreleased stuff I have ever done I have been writing novels and I am working on getting the first one out either end of the year or next year. I am very excited about it. THE LET THEM EAT CAKE ISSUE 11
ingrid baars has grown popular for her contemporary mix of photography & digital art, we have a little chat. Lisa Gwen: Where do you think your art fits in the realms of contemporary art? Ingrid Baars: My art doesn’t really fit in any specific section. It can’t be pinned down I guess. I’m a photographer, I’m an artist, I make my personal art series but also do fashion-stories for magazines and commissioned work for ad-agencies. Besides, it’s not something I think about a lot, nor find it important to clear this out for myself. I just do my own thing. LG: You combine many elements to achieve your final product, most of them manipulated and juxtaposed. How do you go through your process of selection, what do you keep, what do you eliminate? IB: I keep what works. What works together. The elements have to fortify each other. Usually I start with loads of pictures as my starting-point. I shoot my pictures of a model and end up with around 2000 pictures, just from the model, to select from. This I do very fast. I keep what strikes my eye, what moves me. This can be a detail. For example: sometimes I only like the PLATINUM LOVE VOLUME 2 ISSUE 2
shade that the eyelashes make on the skin right beneath an eye. Than that’s what I keep. The rest of the picture can be completely un-interesting and I throw it away. I just use a small part of the skin under the eye in this case and melt it with an eye from a different woman. Sometimes one eye is built up out of 4 pieces of eyes to be melted down in one image. For the rest of the elements it’s a process of experimenting, Lot’s of eliminating and trashing. A lot of sweat and struggle before I find the right combination and shape. For me it’s all about the right shape and emotion. My standard is to be touched and moved by my own work. To feel exited about what’s happening on my screen. I have to feel sort of nervous. I can be extremely concentrated and focused for hours and hours doing this. Then there’s always a very clear moment when I’m done and the image is “finished”. Then I never touch it again. LG: Often your works have a blank background, and the distortion yet elegance of your compositions somehow remind me of Egon Schiele, but in other cases you place your figures firmly in a setting and context, can you tell us a bit
about that? IB: Right now I’m working on a series called “L’Afrique C’est Chique”. It’s a large series of images inspired by classical African art. I want these images to be sculptural. Objects exposed to the viewer in a pure and naked form. No backgrounds that could tell us a story, no narrative. My goal is to make sculptural, bold, powerful statues in a 2 dimensional form standing on their own. Strong and powerfull but naked and vulnerable at the same time. I need the absence of a setting to achieve this tension of being exposed in such a straightforward way. I don’t want them to get the help of a “setting”. But in the case of my ArtistLovers series for example I not only wanted to visualize the artist’s muses but also give an idea of the atmosphere they lived in. The atmosphere and locations, studio’s of artists from the beginning of the 20th century are equally inspiring to me as the muses posing in this environment. LG: Many of your pieces are linked to advertorial campaigns, how much does the product effect your vision and concept? THE LET THEM EAT CAKE ISSUE 12

How much distortion can a picture of a beautiful woman cope with without loosing it’s femininity?
LG: And how much do you think this effects your non-commercial work? I say this because most of your images combine a highly acute sense of fashion together with an obvious sensitivity for composition, light, etc..? IB: Every now and then I do some advertorial work but since last year I decided to spend most of my time developing my own series. In an advertorial campaign the product itself doesn’t effect my way of working, vision or concept but the people involved most certainly do. Of course they do, I don’t blame them; there’s a product that has to be sold. The hardest thing about commissioned work is to look through many eyes at the same time. My eyes, the art- director’s eyes and the client’s. A lot of captains on one ship. The more important or the more expensive the campaign the more people think they need to make their mark. It happens that you end up with a ‘potpourri’- kind of image on which everybody signed of but looks like shit really. The way how this effects my personal work is mainly the new appreciation of my freedom in expressing myself. LG: Your series of work are very particular: inside/out, screen siren, project Bacon, Artlover, fairytale series... there is a strong element of romanticism combined with a dynamic strength which is very striking... how do you manage to combine such opposing poles so seamlessly?
IB: I’m still working on this big project based on Classical African Art sculptures. I never cared much about Classical African Art but this was because I didn’t really “see it”. I didn’t get it. But about one year ago it suddenly kicked in and I never felt this inspired before. These sculptures are so very strong. Pure Modern art. It’s obvious where Picasso, Modigliani and Brancusi (to name but a few) got their inspiration from looking at native African Art. I find it very interesting to pull the slightly “dusty”aura that African art has today into a contemporary setting. It is a big experiment for me to find out if can combine wooden sculptures with African women of flesh and blood. I felt the need to get it of the attic and kick it in the butt. What happens when I paint it shocking pink and give it humanity? How much distortion can a picture of a beautiful woman cope with without loosing it’s femininity? It’s an edgy area and I love it. I just finished a series of 10 images for So Chic Magazine, which was published last March. This is a series [ pictured alongside this interview ] that is also based on African sculptures and I combined it with accessories and fashion items of this new fashion season. Any news about new series, publications or shows will be mentioned on my website. LISA GWEN
IB: I know for a long time that I need opposite poles to create interesting images. There’s no attraction in work that’s missing any contrast. For me this works like an automatism, a very logical process. When there’s something round there needs to be something square, big versus small, dark, light, bold, fragile, blurr, sharp….. This is a balance that feels very natural to me probably because it’s in my character.t LG: Finally... could you tell us a bit whether you have any upcoming projects/series/ shows that you are working on? I’ve seen your L’Afrique c’est chique series, which is pretty stunning, I’m not sure if you can divulge what the project is all about. PLATINUM LOVE VOLUME 2 ISSUE 2

Don’t Trust Your Eyes.
If there is a competition with three hundred contestants and ten prizes, the odds of winning something are 0.034. It is no wonder therefore, that when most of us take a chance against all these odds and enter a contest we simply assume that we won’t win. This was also true for Platinum Love’s latest interviewee, who entered a LadyGaga-look-alike competition in the hopes of taking home tickets to see one of his idols live. As statistics dictate, he lost the contest, but then again statistics only show the logical aspect of things, they forget luck, the right-place-righttime-factor, and the meant-to-bes.
Ignazio Fenech: So, first of all, thanks for agreeing to this! So, what can you tell us about Edward Vigiletti? Who is he really and what makes him tick? Edward Vigiletti: Sometimes I feel like a curious cat just poking around to see what’s going on. There really isn’t a specific agenda behind what I do other than I just want to enjoy myself. Really, I’m just excited that I’m now able to turn childhood fantasies into reality. [...] IF: Definitely. And, I noticed that whenever I get a tweet or a Facebook update from you I always get the feeling that you’re an incredibly positive person who can deal well with the scheiße life has to offer. Am I right?
When the next morning, Edward Vigiletti was told that the same photo he had submitted was PerezHilton.com’s latest post he couldn’t believe it, but little did he know that it was about to end up being used by Gaga herself as a profile picture on her Twitter account.
EV: My family raised me to always look at the positive [side of life]. I believe [that] in every situation, even what looks like to be the worse [sic], there is always a part of it that is pure. I look for that bliss; see it. Then, take whatever experience I was a part of and grow from it.
Since then, it’s been quite a ride for the nineteen-year-old, but today he took some time off to discuss with us Edward Vigiletti: the man, the model, the lover.
You and Gaga
Born This Way PLATINUM LOVE VOLUME 2 ISSUE 2
IF: I think one of the questions that is burning in many of our readers’ minds is if you’ve ever met Lady Gaga in person... So... Have you!?
EV: Haha, you’d think so right? No, I have not… I thought I was going to when I flew out to Australia to see her MonsterBall show, but I had been fooled by someone pretending to be her sadly. Although she did reach out by using one of my photos as her background on Twitter. When I do meet her though, I know it will be for something significant. IF: And what do you think has made Gaga so successful? What has she got that’s different? EV: I think the time we’re living in has made her the success she is. The Internet holds a lot of power. However, I think she is an incredibly dedicated and [an] enjoyable performer to watch. She puts a theatrical quality into her music that I enjoy. I don’t quite get all the comparisons people match up to her, but I guess that’s because that’s not what I’m looking for when I see her. I see a young woman who’s inspiring a lot of young kids to climb out of their shells at a young age. It’s great. IF: Not long ago, Greg Knot, a critic for the Chicago Tribune, said “...[Born This Way] is the sound of a major artist sprinting to please everyone all the time – and even a pop star as inclusive as Gaga can’t pull that off.” Do you feel like there’s any foundation to this? EV: Well, if she was trying to please everyone by recording Born This Way, I’d have to say didn’t do a very good job. I think she knows exactly what her demographic is and they enjoyed it just like she wanted [them to].
it a “job”? EV: My thriving desire to dress up and create has always followed me. Although, everything I do now, is all in an effort to make what I enjoy my permanent livelihood.
IF: Couldn’t agree more. And one last question with this: now that Gaga has introduced her new male alter ego, Jo Calderone, will you change your style as well?
IF: So, I’m assuming that you have never regretted sending that photo of you dressed up as Gaga to that competition, then? EV: Never.
EV: There’s a misconception that I’m an impersonator. I am not. Our resemblance is purely by coincidence.

The Fame IF: What’s the best thing that came with fame? EV: Haha, well I wouldn’t necessarily call what I’ve achieved to be “fame”. But my favorite thing that came from all of this would have to be the experiences. I’ve had the chance to meet, speak and work with some really wonderful people. It’s a very intriguing world. IF: I can imagine, but um, we often get this feeling that fame, or whatever you’d call it, is the answer to everything. It gives you money, self esteem, admirers, love - is it really all it’s made out to be? EV: Things are what you create them to be. IF: Short and sweet, I like that. But, honestly, do you ever worry that people might befriend you or want to date you simply because of what you do? EV: Um, I guess I used to think that way. But it’s a little narcissistic, don’t you think? Now I choose to surround myself... [with] people I trust and respect and that’s all I put my attention to. IF: And now, after all this time, do you feel like what you do has become part of who you are or do you still consider
PLATINUM LOVE VOLUME 2 ISSUE 2
IF: Okay, Edward, so that’s all from me, but is there anything else you’d like to add? Any words of wisdom you’d like to share with our readers? EV: Go after whatever it is you want. Don’t worry about the who, the what, the where, the when and the how. Just know that it will and... relish in the knowing of that Ignazio Fenech
IF: Okay, so on the 13th of July you posted this status on Facebook: “I keep having this dream where I start dating someone beautiful and everything seems to be perfect. Then in a matter of a second something spirals in the wrong direction and he leaves me for another man in front of me. Same dream for a week.. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!” Are you still having this dream? What do you think it means? EV: The dream stopped shortly after.. As for the meaning, I have no real answer. IF: Fair enough. And, um, from your experience, what do you think are the most important ingredients for a relationship to work out then? EV: Show the person you’re trying to get to... [see] your true colors from the start. Don’t hold anything back. IF: And tell us: are you seeing anyone in particular at the moment? *wink* EV: No, after my last relationship I realized that love is the last thing I feel I need or want at the moment. Although if my prince with gold between his legs comes around I wouldn’t hesitate to go with it. IF: Haha, ditto! Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)
